Somali, AU forces clash with Al shabab near Afdamow
(Sh. M. Network)--Witnesses say AMISOM forces, together with Somali soldiers, clashed with Al shabab snuffies in Miido, a town 16 kilometres south of Afmadow, which was recently secured by the coalition forces.

Reports said heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or desultory fighting...
between Somali forces backed by Kenyan army has again broke out on Wednesday the Miido village near Afmadow town in Lower Jubba region of southern Somalia.

"The battle was intensified this morning after Al shabab attacked Somali and AMISOM bases in Miido and both sides have used heavy weaponry, including artillery and morters," Miido resident said.

It was immediately unclear the exact casualties of the renewed fighting in Miido close to Afmadow town. The situation is tense and the combat is going on in several villages located on the outskirts if Afmadow.

Afmadow is the second largest town in the south and only 115km (71 miles) from Kismayo, Al-Shabaab's

Somali troops clash with Al-Shabaab in Garbaharey
(Sh. M. Network) -- Al shabab beturbanned goons have made a surprise attack on the country's south-western town of Garbaharey used by Somali government-backed troops as a base, reports said.

Witnesses confirmed that the Al-Shabaab

fighters used heavy weaponry in the attack which took place on Tuesday night on the outskirts of Garbaharey, which sets near the to the country's borders with its neighbors Æthiopia and Kenya.

The conflicts reportedly broke out late on Tuesday continuing overnight into early Wednesday when Al-Shabaab fighters attacked Garbaharey district, targeting Somali government forces using mortar shells and artillery fire.

Hundreds of Shaboobs surrender
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Hundreds of Al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
fighters and some of their top commanders have surrendered to African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
peacekeeping forces following four days of attacks on their bases near Kismayu.

By Wednesday, more than 200 gunnies had surrendered in Afmadow town, according to security officials.

The surrender of the gunnies is seen as a major boost to African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) forces as the defectors are likely to reveal Al-Shabaab's war plans.

It also emerged on Wednesday that the Kenyan contingent of Amisom forces and their Somali allies were advancing towards Biibi from Miido which they liberated on Friday night.

Kenya Defence Forces front man Cyrus Oguna confirmed that the troops were preparing to capture Biibi before advancing to Kismayu.

"They are making progress and moving forward. Our troops will be in Biibi very soon," Col Oguna said.

He could, however, not immediately confirm the surrender of Al-Shabaab bad turbans, saying he was still seeking more information from the battlefront.

Biibi town is located about 90km from Kismayu and KDF intends to use it as one of its forward operation bases. From Biibi, the troops will head to Janai-Abdalla before closing in on Kismayu.

Amisom spokesperson Ali Aden Hamoud told Nation that Ugandan and Burundian troops had made progress in the war against Al-Shabaab.

Military sources said the Ugandan and Burundian forces were at Harbole, a town near Kismayu from where they were waiting for orders to take over the port city.

Other towns that have been targeted in the Jubba region include Jilib and Bulla-Hajji from where another Kenyan forces will attack Kismayu.

Hundreds of residents are fleeing Kismayu to avoid being caught up in the clash between the gunnies and Amisom forces. The residents are heading to the town of Bawawe and Marka, east of Kismayu.

Marka was recently liberated by Amisom troops fighting alongside the Somali National Army. In the recent past, Al-Shabaab has blocked some of the town's 90,000 residents and another 70,000 living in surrounding areas from fleeing.

Kenyan forces are optimistic that they will be able to liberate the city from the gunnies who have controlled it since August 2008 when they defeated former Jubba Valley Alliance Colonel Aden Shire (Barre Hirrale), who ruled the town for years.

On Monday, seven Al-Shabaab fighters, including a senior commander, were killed in an Amisom raid in Kismayu. The missile strikes were conducted by Kenya Navy vessels in the Indian Ocean.

Drone Strike in Yemen Kills 5 'Qaida' Militants
[An Nahar] A strike by an unmanned drone killed five suspected members of al-Qaeda in eastern Yemen on Wednesday, a security official said.

"Five al-Qaeda members were killed in the raid" that targeted a house in the village of Al-Ain in Hadramawt province, the official said, requesting anonymity.

He said two middle-ranking members of the local branch of al-Qaeda were among the dead.

The United States is the only country that has drones in the region and in recent months has been carrying out strikes on al-Qaeda targets in the south and east of the country and in the Arabian peninsula.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Six Russian Police Killed in Caucasus Attack
[An Nahar] Six coppers were killed in Russia's troubled North Caucasus on Wednesday in a combined bombing and shooting attack as they drove in convoy, the regional interior ministry said.

"A convoy of a regiment protecting the administrative border came under fire. As a result of the shooting, six coppers died and one was maimed," the interior ministry of the Ingushetia region said on its website.

The police had returned fire on the attackers, it added, without saying whether any were killed or injured.

The officers were riding in their convoy of jeeps and trucks soon after noon when "an bomb triggered" near the village of Dattykh in eastern Ingushetia, the region's investigative committee said.

"Then unidentified attackers shot at the convoy from a wooded area using automatic weapons."

Ingushetian leader Yunus-Bek Yevkurov told the Interfax news agency that "We have information on the people who could have carried out this crime. They will be found and neutralized."

Banned outfit helps in vaccinating Tirah children
[Dawn] The government vaccinated children in inaccessible areas of Tirah for the first time during the last four years with the help of Ansarul Islam, a banned outfit in Khyber Agency, officials said.

They said that cooperation by Ansarul Islam led to vaccination of children in 95 per cent area of Tirah. "It is a major breakthrough as many efforts to vaccinate children in the Taliban-controlled areas had failed," officials told Dawn, crediting the vaccinators and Ansarul Islam for protecting 32,641 children against polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...

They said that 11,626 children also got vaccine against measles while another 3,889 newborns and below the age of one month were vaccinated to safeguard them from five ailments. The vaccinators covered those children on Monday and Tuesday, they said.

"Ansarul Islam and religious leaders attached to the group understand that the poliovirus can cause life long disability so they are ready to support the initiative," said officials. Only four families refused to vaccinate their children, however, efforts were afoot to convince them, they said.

The officials said that they covered 95 per cent children in Tirah valley of Bara tehsil. "Ansarul Islam played a vital role in countering community refusals," they added.

The incident took place outside Jandol cop shoppe in the mountainous Lower Dir district, one of the tribal areas bordering Pakistain where Taliban and al-Qaeda gun-hung tough guys have strongholds.

Rebels seek unity as Syria troops batter Aleppo
[Bangla Daily Star] Rebels fighting to oust Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
yesterday announced plans to reform and stem the proliferation of militias, as they came under artillery and aerial attack on multiple fronts.

Assad himself came under renewed diplomatic fire from Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said Syria had become a "terrorist state," and from Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who told him to go.

Forces loyal to the embattled president again trained their heavy weapons on second city Aleppo

, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 30 people, including seven children, were killed yesterday.

In its latest toll, the watchdog said at least 90 people were killed nationwide yesterday -- 64 civilians, 12 soldiers and 14 rebels.

The Observatory said fighter jets bombed zones controlled by the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the northern city while ground troops simultaneously unleashed a barrage of shells.

Aleppo has been the target of a five-week-old government offensive aiming to dislodge the rebels who took over swathes of the commercial capital in July.

Relentless bombardments and food shortages have been reported in zones still held by the rebels, a rag-tag army of military defectors and civilians who have taken up weapons.

A rebel general yesterday said that the FSA would soon adopt changes aimed at overcoming divisions and addressing the growing number of militias fighting on its behalf.

Following talks due to end in around 10 days, the FSA would go by the name of the Syrian National Army, General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the military council grouping rebel chiefs, told AFP.

Several blasts were heard in the Damascus

district of Jubar as it came under heavy bombardment, and kabooms were also heard in Yalda just south of the city, the watchdog said.

In the central city of Homs, the rebel bastion of Khaldiyeh came under fierce mortar fire, and three children were killed when regime forces bombarded the Ariha area in Homs province.

peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said on Tuesday that the corpse count in the country was "staggering" and the destruction "catastrophic."

The Algerian former foreign minister, who took up his post on Saturday, also warned the situation across Syria was "deteriorating steadily."
