A security bigshot privy to the Anti-terrorism operations told Sunday Standard that the bounties have had a great impact in tracking some terrorists.

Mohammed Mohamud alias Mohammed Kuno, a Kenyan al-Shabaab leader is said to have led the heinous Garissa University College massacre in which 147 people were killed in April 2015. He holds the highest bounty at Sh20 million.

The suspect, also known as Dulyadin Gamadhere, hails from the Ogaden tribe in Garissa County.

He has been linked to several terror attacks in the country, including the September 2013 Westgate Shopping Mall raid in which 67 people were killed.

Arabia
5 al-Qaeda operatives die in drone attack in Marib
ADEN: A drone strike on Sunday killed five suspected Al-Qaeda militants in the Yemeni province of Marib, east of the capital Sanaa, security officials said.

One official said a US drone had probably carried out the strike, which targeted a car in the province’s Saoud district.

The US considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to be the radical group’s most dangerous branch.

AQAP has flourished in the chaos of the country’s civil war.

A long-running drone war against AQAP has intensified since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

An air raid he ordered that month killed a US Navy SEAL and several Yemeni civilians in Baida province, just south of Marib.

Jaish-e-Mohammed Operations Head Abu Khalid killed by Kashmiri Police SOG
Srinagar: In a major victory for the Indian security forces, terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operational head Abu Khalid was, on Monday, killed in an encounter which broke out early in the morning, between militants and security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Security formed a cordon and launched a search operation in Ladoora area following the inputs that militants were present in the area, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into a gunbattle when the militants opened fire on the search party. Police said the Jaish commander was killed in the encounter.

Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police SP Vaid said it was a major breakthrough for the security forces as Khalid was involved in many attacks on security camps in North Kashmir. He also spearheaded Jaish operation targeting policemen in particular.

"He was killed in a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operation Group, local police, the CRPF and the Army," he said.

Khalid, who is a Pakistani national, had been operational in the area for last two to three years and was also instrumental in arranging recruits for the terror outfit, police said.

He had recently carried out an attack on a Special Police Officer and his seven-year-old son at Handwara, they said and added that Khalid was an A++ category top-ranking terrorist and carried a bounty of nearly Rs 7 lakh on his head.

Police are also probing his role in the recent attack carried out by the Jaish-e-Mohammed on BSF battalion headquarters near high-security Srinagar airport and also the attack on the District Police Lines at Pulwama.

It is expected that he was a part of the conspiracy behind these dastardly attacks, police said.

Iraq
More Mosul Moslem Mayhem
16 ISIS Bad Guys die in close quarters fighting in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Sixteen Islamic State militants were killed as they got out of tunnels in Mosul during a security operation, Jordanian’s Petra news agency reported on Sunday.

“Security troops launched an operation to blow up IS tunnels in regions of al-Midan, al-Shahwan, al-Dakka and Qulai’at, in center of the Old City of Mosul,” a security source said.

Troops, according to the source, found that militants were hiding at the tunnels so they can move between the districts. Sixteen of them were killed.

On July 10, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over IS militants who had held the second largest Iraqi city since 2014. More than 25000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October.

Since the city was declared free, security troops continue to comb western Mosul areas for hidden IS cells.

Despite declaring the victory over IS there in the city, observers say IS is believed to constitute a security threat even after the group’s defeat at its main havens across Iraqi provinces.

Having recaptured Hawija in Kirkuk, Mosul and Tal Afar in Nineveh and Annah town in Anbar, Iraqi troops still have only western Anbar’s towns of Rawa and Qaim remain under the militant’s control.

On Saturday, the Joint Operations Command said 385 IS members, including five snipers, were killed during the second phase of Hawija offensive. 150 villages in Hawija were freed, in addition to al-Abbassi region and the northern side of the town. Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, commander of Hawija Operations, said Federal Police, the rapid Response forces and PMFs accomplished their targets of the second phase.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi declared on Thursday liberation of Hawija. The second phase of the offensive was launched in late September.

Israel forces target Hamas positions in Gaza Strip
[PRESSTV] Israeli forces have launched artillery attacks on alleged Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, positions in the Gazoo Strip.

No casualties have been reported from the Sunday night attacks.

Israel claims that the attacks were launched is response to rocket fire from the Gazoo Strip that landed without causing any injuries.

The Israeli military frequently targets the Gazoo Strip, with civilians being the main victims of such attacks.

Israel has launched several wars on the Paleostinian coastal sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014. The military aggression, which ended on August 26, 2014, killed nearly 2,200 Paleostinians. Over 11,100 others were also maimed in the war.

Iran confirms nuclear negotiator imprisoned for spying
[IsraelTimes] Iran’s judiciary confirms the five-year prison sentence given to a Canadian-Iranian member of its nuclear negotiating team on spying charges.

"Mr Abdolrasoul Dorri Esfahani... was among some who were accused of spying and providing information for foreigners and had links with two espionage services," judiciary front man Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie tells news hounds. "The court sentenced him to five years in prison and the verdict is final," Ejeie says.

Dorri Esfahani has a background in the banking sector and was a member of the supervisory board overseeing implementation of the nuclear deal signed between Iran and world powers in 2015.

Since mid-2016, conservative websites and members of parliament have repeatedly accused Dorri Esfahani of spying for Britannia.

Turkish troops fighting al-Nusra Takfiris near Idlib
Turkish troops on Sunday exchanged fire with Syria-based Takfiri militants as Ankara massed military vehicles on the frontier ahead of an expected operation in Idlib province.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday announced the launch of an operation by pro-Ankara Syrian militant forces, backed by the Turkish army, to re-impose security in Idlib.

Most of the northwestern region is controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group led by Al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate Nusra Front.

Turkey has massed special forces and military hardware including tanks on the border but the operation has yet to begin in earnest, monitors and sources on the ground said.

But Turkish forces fired seven mortars over the border with the aim of easing the passage of the pro-Ankara Syrian forces, the Dogan news agency reported.

Turkish forces have also been seen removing parts of the security wall Ankara has built on the border so that military vehicles can pass through into Syria.

Pro-government Turkish media said that the operation was now into its “second day” and it was not immediately clear what the Turkish military’s next move would be.

On Sunday morning, HTS militants opened fire on Turkish forces removing part of a wall along the border between Turkey and Idlib, witnesses and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

The Observatory reported “heavy exchanges of fire”, but said the incident did not appear to mark the start of the operation Erdogan described on Saturday.

Turkish armored vehicles and troops were waiting on the border, from where smoke could be seen from the mortar fire, an AFP photographer said.

More from Asharq al-Awsat

Ankara, Beirut – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched a “major military operation” in Syria’s northwestern province Idlib.

The offensive is led by rebel factions belonging to the Free Syrian Army but with the support of Turkish forces and Russian air support to fight off Tahrir al-Sham factions, among which is al-Nusra Front.

“There’s a serious operation in Syria’s Idlib today and it will continue,” Erdogan said in a speech to his AK Party on Saturday, adding that Turkey would not allow a “terror corridor” on its border with Syria.

“For now the Free Syrian Army is carrying out the operation there,” he said. “Russia is supporting the operation from the air, and our armed forces from inside Turkey’s borders.”

Late on Saturday, Turkey deployed tanks and military vehicles on the its Syrian border, building up military presence, a Reuters witness said.

Erdogan told reporters after the meeting that Russia supports the operation from the air while supported by Turkish soldiers from within the Turkish border.

“As for the Russians, they will not have a role in the areas of our control at all. The role of the Russians is limited to areas under regime control,” he said.

Ankara, Moscow and Tehran announced a deal last month to establish and patrol a “de-escalation” zone in the Idlib region, where Erdogan has said Turkey will deploy troops.

Turkey’s foreign minister said late on Saturday that Turkey aimed to prevent clashes in Idlib.

“Russian and Iranian observers will be in some regions here, and we will have our observers inside Idlib. Of course they will be in safe places so there will be no risks,” Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters.

More so, Erdogan said that his country is currently taking a new step to achieve security in Idlib as part of its efforts to expand the scope of the “Euphrates Shield”.

He pointed out to the presence of serious action currently taking place in Idlib to achieve security.

In the same context, the Turkish army deployed a large number of special forces and armored military vehicles, which were sent over the past week to the town of Reyhanlı, a town and district of Hatay Province, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, near the country’s border with Syria.

Syrian rebels capture ISIS HQ in Deir Ezzor
Deir Ezzor (Syria News) The self-proclaimed Islamic State group has recently lost one of its important headquarters, located in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, for the Syrian Democratic Forces militia, Qasioun News reported.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) managed to recapture the Sawa area, in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, after violent clashes with the Islamic State militants, who were sieged inside the area.

Few days ago, Islamic State group also lost control over Kasra town, which is located on the banks of the Euphrates River, in western Deir Ezzor, after battles with the Syrian Democratic Forces, and thus the number of villages held by the group were lessened to only three villages (Mohammed, Safira, Shakra, Salhiya, Hatala).
