Third U.N. Employee Dies From Ebola, UN Ebola Funds Have $476.5 Million
[AnNahar] A U.N. staff member in Sierra Leone has died from Ebola, the third employee from the world organization to succumb to the deadly virus, the U.N. front man said Monday.

The man, who was a driver for the U.N. Women agency, passed away at the weekend in Sierra Leone and his spouse is currently receiving treatment, said front man Stephane Dujarric.

"All measures to protect staff at the duty station in Sierra Leone are being taken as best as possible under the current circumstances," said Dujarric.

A Sudanese national who worked as a U.N. health worker in Liberia died in Germany last week while a Liberian national died of probable Ebola last month.

The world's worst Ebola outbreak has killed at least 4,500 people in West Africa where the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
is leading an effort to beat back the virus with a massive influx of aid.

A U.N. trust fund set up to provide quick funding to confront the Ebola emergency got a boost when Australia deposited $8.7 million and more pledges have come in.

Chile, Estonia, Finland, India, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Norway and Romania have also offered contributions, bringing the total amount of pledges to $ 43.5 million. They will contribute to the fund.

U.N. Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
last week caused a stir when he complained of having only $100,000 in cash on hand for the fund and urged nations to dig deep in their pockets.

The fund is separate from a $1 billion dollar appeal that the United Nations has launched to beef up the Ebola response, of which 433 million dollars have been donated.

Boko Haram launches new attacks -- 24 hr after ceasefire
Barely 24 hours after the federal government and Boko Haram agreed to a cease fire, the insurgents have struck again. ThisDay reports that Boko Haram attacked Borno and Adamawa between Friday and Saturday.
That's mighty short even for a 'hudna'. Wonder if they have Hamas advisors?
Possibly the person the government was negotiating with did not actually speak for Boko Haram, in which case there is even less reason for them to feel bound by it.
An unnamed source told reporters "just as we have started celebrating a ceasefire, we got news that these terrorists have attacked Borno again, giving us an indication that there was no such agreement or, perhaps, they are more than a terror group."

The regions attacked are Maikadiri in Abadam Local Government Area, in northern Borno State, and Sina and Grata villages in Michika Local Government Area in Adamawa State. An undisclosed number of people were killed in the attacks. Many are feared dead.

Insurgents kill 18 Houthis as sectarian strife spreads
[ARABNEWS] Al-Qaeda-affiliated faceless myrmidons killed 18 Shiite Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to Americaâ¢, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels and seized an important city in central Yemen, tribal sources said on Monday, in a spread of sectarian conflict as central government authority has unraveled.

The northern-based Houthis established themselves as power brokers in Yemen last month by capturing the capital, Sanaa against scant resistance from the weak administration of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Tribal sources said that at least 10 Houthi fighters were killed when Al-Qaeda-linked Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
fighters shelled a house in the town of Radda in Al-Bayda province on Sunday night. Eight more Houthi fighters were killed in festivities on the outskirts of Radda, they said.

Ansar al-Sharia said in a report from the Al-Orsh area in Al-Bayda that "dozens of Houthis" have been killed or maimed in battles since Sunday evening. "The battles are continuing until this moment," the report added. There was no immediate word on casualties from Ansar.

Radda, with a population of 60,000, has long been a stronghold of Ansar, which includes many fighters from local tribes who are up in arms over the new presence of Houthi rebels in the mainly Sunni-populated region.
An Nahar adds:
A jacket wallah killed 15 people, including children, when he detonated a boom-mobile near a Shiite rebel checkpoint south of the Yemeni capital on Monday, witnesses said.

The blast went off within meters (yards) of the checkpoint in the town of Rada, scene of heavy fighting between the Al-Qaeda bad boys, backed by Sunni rustics, and rebels seeking to expand their territorial control.

A witness spoke of "charred bodies" left by the powerful kaboom, adding that seven people were maimed.

A tribal source gave the same corpse count.

The assailant appeared to target a delegation of the Houthis as they walked out of a house near the checkpoint, where they had been holding "telephone negotiations" with Al-Qaeda representatives, a source said.

The attack came after overnight festivities between the Shiites and Al-Qaeda backed by Sunni rustics killed at least 45 people in the town of Rada, about 150 kilometers (95 miles) south of the capital Sanaa.

Al Qaeda attacks kill at least 33 people in Yemen
[REUTERS] At least 33 people were killed in a suicide kaboom and gun attacks in central Yemen, tribal sources and medics said on Monday, as al Qaeda gunnies seized a Yemeni city in a new challenge to the central government.

Violence has spread in Yemen since Shi'ite Moslem Houthis took over the capital, Sanaa, last month, threatening the stability of a country that borders on Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. Federal prosecutors said Monday that one of those people, a German-Moroccan dual national identified only as Mounir R., has now been taken into custody over accusations he provided IS with clothing worth 1,100 euros ($1,400) and transferred 1,000 euros to an IS member in Syria. They say he planned to leave for Syria soon himself.

Press TV Reporter Serena Shim Killed in Turkey Car Crash after ‘Spying Accusations’
[Global Research] A Lebanese-American reporter working for Iranian channel, Press TV, Serena Shim has been killed in a car crash in Turkey, following her reports of accusations from Turkey’s intelligence agency that she had been “spying.”

“Our correspondent Serena Shim has been killed near the Turkey-Syria border. Serena was killed in a reported car accident when she was returning from a report scene…their car collided with a heavy vehicle,” a Press TV broadcast stated on Monday. Shim had also been the mother of two young children.

The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested, according to Turkish news agency Hurriyet, citing the Turkish Doğan News Agency. Press TV disputed this, alleging that both driver and vehicle have disappeared.

Lawfare: Palestinians File UN Complaint Accusing Settler Of Killing Schoolgirl
[IsraelTimes] The Paleostinians are accusing an Israeli settler of running over two schoolgirls, killing one of them, and speeding away.

Paleostinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said in a letter Monday to the UN Security Council that the two girls got off a school bus in the West Bank town of Sinjil on Sunday and were hit while walking to their mothers across the street. He said Inas Khalil, 5, died several hours later and Nilin Asfour, 8, is at death's door.

Residents of the Paleostinian town accused the driver, 29, of the Yitzhar settlement, of deliberately hitting the girls.

The driver told police he did not stop after striking the girls because he feared for his life due to the crowd that had gathered around the injured girls, according to Ynet. He stopped in the nearest Jewish community, Ofra, where he reported the accident and turned himself in.

Israel Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the incident was an accident, according to Ynet.

Mansour accused "extremist terrorist settlers" of several other hit-and-run acts in the past few months.

He said Israel is responsible for all crimes committed by the settlers, and called on the international community to compel Israel "to reign in the terror and violence being perpetrated by its settlers."

France Launches Fresh Strikes against IS in Iraq
[AnNahar] French fighter jets have carried out a third round of air strikes against Islamic State

jihadists in support of Iraqi ground forces, the defense ministry said Monday.

Two Rafale jets on Sunday destroyed two pick-up trucks belonging to the murderous Moslem group, which has seized vast swaths of Iraq and Syria.
How about bombing the armor instead of the technicals?
"During an armed reconnaissance mission in the Tikrit region 200 km (124 miles) north of Baghdad, mobile targets were transmitted to flight crews," the ministry said on its website.

"After they were identified and confirmed as hostile by the Rafale pilots, they were targeted with three laser-guided GBU 12 bombs."

La Belle France carried out its first strikes under Operation Chammal, on September 19, after joining a U.S.-led coalition battling the jihadists. A second round took place on September 25.

Fighter jets previously destroyed a logistics warehouse and four hangars containing military equipment used by IS Death Eaters.

La Belle France has nine fighter jets stationed at its Al Dhafra military base in the United Arab Emirates.

The United States first launched strikes in Iraq on August 8 and widened its campaign on September 23 to include Syria, where the IS group has its headquarters.

So far, the coalition has attracted dozens of countries, though only a handful of Arab allies -- Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...

and the United Arab Emirates -- are participating in the strikes on Syria.

Five European countries have committed aircraft to Iraq only -- Belgium, Britannia, Denmark, La Belle France and the Netherlands -- but Britannia and La Belle France are the only ones so far to have carried out strikes.

Islamic State Insurgents Advance Into Iraqi Town Of Qara Tappa

snuffies advanced on the Iraqi town of Qara Tappa on Monday disguised as Kurdish peshmerga fighters, Kurdish security sources said.

They seized two Kurdish villages after surprising the Kurdish fighters before launching the attack on Qara Tappa, 120 km (75 miles) north of Baghdad, seeking to expand their territory and heap pressure on Kurdish forces in disputed areas.

"The snuffies were wearing peshmerga uniforms and this tactic helped them to easily infiltrate our defences near Qara Tappa," a peshmerga officer said on condition of anonymity.

Reinforcements were sent from the Kurdish-controlled city of Khanaqin to repel the bandidos myrmidons and prevent the town of Qara Tappa from falling, the sources said.
An Nahar adds:

jihadist group on Monday attacked the Kurdish-controlled town of Qara Tapah, northeast of Baghdad, killing at least seven peshmerga troops and three civilians, officials said.

The bully boyz attacked from two sides, lobbing mortar rounds into the town, which lies 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Iranian border.

"We have asked for air support from the international coalition," a senior military officer in the area said, referring to U.S.-led forces carrying out air strikes against IS.

According to peshmerga leaders and a hospital official in the nearby town of Khanaqin, at least seven peshmerga and three non-combatants were killed by the shelling and in the fighting that raged in surrounding villages.

"Almost half of the town's population fled today. We're talking about around 9,000 people," said a resident who gave his name as Haidar.

The head of an organization promoting the rights of Iraq's Turkmen minority also spoke of an exodus of several thousand people.

Qara Tapah, where three boom-mobiles killed at least 45 people on October 12, has a mixed population of Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen.

"The people who remain are young men who are carrying weapons to defend their town alongside peshmerga fighters," Haidar said.

"We are afraid IS will encircle us and turn this town into a second Amerli," said Haidar, in reference to a majority Turkmen Shiite town farther north that was besieged by IS for two months.

In August, an alliance of federal forces, Kurdish troops and Shiite militias eventually broke the siege of Amerli, where residents held off the jihadists against all odds.

US Reports 12 Air Strikes Against Islamic State In Syria, Iraq

holy warriors near the Syrian border town of Kobani on Sunday and Monday, the US Central Command said in a statement.

US forces, in coordination with Iraqi ground troops, also conducted six air strikes against the turban group in Iraq near Fallujah and Bayji with help from La Belle France and the United Kingdom, Central Command said.

In Iraq, three of the US-led strikes hit Islamic State targets south of the oil refinery in Bayji, striking a small group of holy warriors as well as destroying or damaging vehicles and buildings, according to the statement released on Monday. The strikes near Fallujah also hit a large unit of Islamic State fighters, it added.

In Syria, the US strikes hit a "stray" resupply vehicle from the US airdrop of supplies earlier on Monday intended for Kurdish forces battling the turban group in Kobani, which the US military said "prevented these supplies from falling into enemy hands."

Thai school arson suspects detained
Thai authorities have already detained suspects who allegedly set fire to six schools in Pattani province earlier this month.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday the suspects had confessed to the crimes and expressed repentance. He said, "During the interrogation, it became clear that they committed the arson attacks out of misunderstanding related to the many deaths in the southernmost region. After the misunderstanding was cleared, they became repentant."

He said there were between six and eight suspects in the case.

On October 12 this year, six schools were set ablaze in Thung Yang Daeng district in Pattani province. Prawit said information suggested that the arsonists had planned to set 14 schools on fire, but thanks to safety measures, they were only able to attack six schools.

When asked about peace talks with insurgent groups, Prawit said, "No progress, yet."

Meanwhile, authorities are hunting Abdulloh Baraheng for his alleged role in fatal attacks. The last attack on Sept 11 involved a stolen pickup and caused four deaths and injuries to another ten people. According to investigations, Abdulloh has two accomplices. Of them, one has been arrested and the other surrendered on October 8.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
ISIS: American Air Dropped Weapons Now in Our Hands
In a new video, ISIS shows American-made weapons it says were intended for the Kurds but actually were air dropped into territory they control.

At least one bundle of U.S. weapons airdropped in Syria appears to have fallen into the hands of ISIS, a dangerous misfire in the American mission to speed aid to Kurdish forces making their stand in Kobani.

An ISIS-associated YouTube account posted a new video online Tuesday entitled, "Weapons and munitions dropped by American planes and landed in the areas controlled by the Islamic State in Kobani." The video was also posted on the Twitter account of "a3maq news," which acts as an unofficial media arm of ISIS. The outfit has previously posted videos of ISIS fighters firing American made Howitzer cannons and seizing marijuana fields in Syria.

ISIS had broadly advertised its acquisition of a broad range of U.S.-made weapons during its rampage across Iraq. ISIS videos have showed its fighters driving U.S. tanks, MRAPs, Humvees. There are unconfirmed reports ISIS has stolen three fighter planes from Iraqi bases it conquered.

The authenticity of this latest video could not be independently confirmed, but the ISIS fighters in the video are in possession of a rich bounty of American hand grenades, rounds for small rockets, and other supplies that they will surely turn around and use on the Kurdish forces they are fighting in and around the Turkish border city.

On Monday, White House Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said the U.S. government was confident that the emergency airdropped supplies for the Kurdish forces near Kobani were falling into the right hands.

"We feel very confident that, when we air drop support as we did into Kobani… we've been able to hit the target in terms of reaching the people we want to reach," Rhodes told CNN. "What I can assure people is that, when we are delivering aid now, we focus it on the people we want to receive that assistance. Those are civilians in need. Those are forces that we're aligned with in the fight against ISIL [the government's preferred acronym for ISIS], and we take precautions to make sure that it's not falling into the wrong hands."

Rhodes was responding to questions about a Monday report in The Daily Beast that U.S. humanitarian aid was flowing into ISIS controlled areas near Kobani by truck. That aid was mostly food and medical supplies, not the kind of lethal weapons in the new ISIS video.

#2  I was thinking the same thing EH2664; wuz going to ask if anyone could identify any background features or clues from the video.

American grenades or equipment does not necessarily mean USA.

#3  Looks like door number 1 was missing fuses.

Hard to believe that a drop would be missed by so much that there are no sounds of fighting in the background, and pretty casual walking about in an air strike zone. Don't know about the terrain, but looks a bit flat for the Kobane area. Thoughts?

#4  I heard that one air drop landed in IS controlled territory but it was bombed to prevent it from failing into enemy hands.

MK-82 GP bomb disguised as a 463L pallet of MRE's. Yea, go ahead and rip that cargo netting right on off, no problem. Bring lots of blokes to help, these MRE's are hefty.

#9  I hate it, but we'd better end our rather enjoyable line of suggestions John. We'll soon need classifications markings which could make Fred rather squeamish.

#13  Do Not Let Michelle O see the food our troops get. Kurds in Kobane show the world how to make an MRE supplied by the airdrop look good. Sorry guys. This looks like something only the YPJ (female Kurdish fighters) have the talent to make look that good.

Aleppo siege looms as Assad regime gains ground
[ARABNEWS] The Syrian regime Army has reportedly advanced in the rebel-held areas around Aleppo in a bid to fully besiege the northwestern city, opposition sources and activists reported Monday.

Sources said the army has managed to gain control over strategic posts in Aleppo suburbs with the help of Iranian, Lebanese and Afghan militias.

The town of Al-Jubaila, along with a glass factory and a cement plant near Aleppo's central prison, have fallen under the grip of Assad's militias, sources added.

Activists said the Syrian regime's recent gains indicate that the city of Aleppo, once the economic hub of Syria, could soon be subject to a dreadful siege.

Opposition fighters suggest the regime is gaining ground in the area by using toxic gases after failing to win over the armed opposition with conventional weapons.
