NATO kills 20 terrorists in eastern Afghanistan
[Pak Daily Times] NATO troops killed more than 20 faceless myrmidons in fighting in eastern Afghanistan Saturday after a patrol came under fire, the coalition said, while in the north,

Germany's chancellor made a surprise visit to her nation's troops. In southern Afghanistan, a jacket wallah targeting a district chief in the city of Kandahar killed two passers-by, including a child, and maimed at least nine more people, authorities said.

Saturday's gunbattle between NATO forces and faceless myrmidons took place in the Tagab district of Kapisa province, where coalition forces called in air support after their patrol came under fire, NATO said. It added that Taliban capos were among the more than 20 faceless myrmidons killed.

The fighting came a day after more than five faceless myrmidons were killed in a three-hour firefight in the same district following sniper fire on Afghan and international forces manning a checkpoint, NATO said. The coalition did not say what nationality the international troops were, but French forces are stationed in the area.

About 3,850 French troops are deployed in Afghanistan, mainly in Kapisa and the Surobi district north and east of Kabul. A French soldier was killed on Friday after a reconnaissance mission came under fire in the neighboring district of Alasay in Kapisa, bringing the total number of French soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 51.

Separately NATO said a coalition soldier was killed in an terrorist attack in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, but it did not release the nationality of the casualty or the location of the attack.

Another soldier died of an injury in the north of the country on Friday, NATO said. The German military said one of its soldiers, a 21-year-old, died of a gunshot wound that appeared to be the result of an accident at a military post in Baghlan Province, but the matter was being investigated.

More than 670 international troops have died in Afghanistan so far this year. Germany currently has nearly 4,700 troops serving in Afghanistan and plans to start gradually withdrawing in late 2011.

To the south, a jacket wallah went kaboom!" on Saturday near an armoured car carrying a district chief in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, killing two civilians, including a child, and wounding at least another nine, Afghan authorities said.

NATO said the bombing had maimed 11 children.

The bomber targeted Ahmadullah Nazak's car in a residential and shopping area of the city as the official was traveling to a meeting, said Zalmai Ayubi, front man for the Kandahar provincial governor. Nazak was unharmed.

"I am safe and sound, and all of those who were in the car are also safe and sound," Nazak said shortly after the kaboom. He did not say how many people had been in the car with him. Irfan Hameed, a doctor at the local hospital, said the bodies of a man and a boy killed in the blast were taken to the hospital, which was also treating five men and four children maimed in the attack.

Violence has been on the rise across much of Afghanistan, with the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand seeing much of the fighting.

Afghan kidnappers kill Bangladeshi engineer
[Bangla Daily Star] Kidnappers killed a Bangladeshi engineer working in Afghanistan and kidnapped two road workers after storming their camp at gunpoint, officials said yesterday.

The incident happened in the north, where Taliban Islamic fascisti are increasingly active as Nato has opened up new supply lines, and in an area adjacent to where German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited yesterday.

"Seven Afghan and Bangladeshi road construction workers were kidnapped last night," said Shirjan Duranai, front man for the police in Balkh province.

"One Bangladeshi was killed, four workers beat feet, while two are still hostages."

The nationality of those still being held hostage is not clear, he said, adding that police had launched an investigation.

The workers were employed by South Korean company, the country's embassy in Kabul confirmed to AFP. An official there added that their information was that seven people, all Bangladeshis, were still unaccounted for.

No South Korean workers were harmed in the incident and the company has decided to bring its workers back home following the attack, a South Korean foreign ministry spokeswoman told AFP.

The incident took place on a remote road being constructed between the northern provinces of Samangan and Balkh.

One local official said the gunnies burst into a road construction camp, killing the Bangladeshi immediately and then kidnapping the others.

"Last night at 8:00 pm (1530 GMT), unknown gunnies entered a road construction camp, killing one Bangladeshi on the spot and snatching away seven other workers including an Afghan guard," said Enayatullah Zafar, the head of Balkh's public works directorate.

Arabia
Saudi arrests 38 after 'sectarian' clashes
[Emirates 24/7] Saudi police jugged 38 people in the holy city of Madinah after fighting erupted near Islam's oldest mosque Al-Quba on the Shiite religious holiday of Ashura, Saudi media reported on Saturday.

Several people suffered minor injuries in Thursday's festivities between "groups of youths," the press reports said.

Three security officials were also maimed, the Al-Madina newspaper said.

The Shiite website Rasid.com said the fighting pitted members of Soddy Arabia's Shiite minority against majority Sunnis.

Thursday was the climax of Ashura, a 10-day commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, one of the key figures of the Shiite faith.

Bomb hits US Embassy vehicle in Yemen
[Pak Daily Times] A group of American embassy staffers came under attack when a bomb was thrown near their vehicle outside a restaurant in Yemen's capital, US and Yemeni officials said Thursday.
Thrown near. These people are full of holy viciousness, but don't seem to be actually competent. Perhaps it's the qat...
No one was hurt in the attack Wednesday evening in Hadda, a commercial district in the capital, said US State Department front man P.J. Crowley. 'Those in the vehicle were not injured. We have an ongoing investigation. The attack occurred in Hadda,' he said, adding that 'the bomb went off outside the vehicle.'

Two Yemeni security officials said that several suspects were jugged, including a Jordanian in his 20s. Another US official said the blast disabled the vehicle, adding that the embassy believes it was 'likely' an attempt to target US interests.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press. The US Embassy in Sanaa said in a statement on its website that 'foreign residents ... were targeted for attack' Wednesday, but it gave no further detail. It urged Americans in the country 'to remain vigilant' and avoid areas where attacks have occurred.

It was not immediately known whether the attack was linked to al Qaeda faceless myrmidons in the country. The Yemeni officials said an investigation of the attack was under way, but refused to comment further.

Al Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen has carried out a number of attacks against foreign embassy staffers - most recently in October when faceless myrmidons fired a rocket at a British Embassy vehicle carrying four officials and the deputy chief of mission. One staffer and three bystanders were maimed. Al Qaeda gunnies have also carried out direct attacks on the US Embassy in Sanaa in the past.

The United States has dramatically stepped up counterterrorism aid to Yemen's government to fight al Qaeda, which has grabbed credit for an attempt last Christmas Eve to blow up a passenger jet over US soil and an attempt earlier this year to mail bombs to Chicago-area synagogues.

Britain
Parcel explodes outside Iran embassy
[Iran Press TV] A suspect package mailed to the Iranian embassy's consular section in London went off outside the building on Friday with bomb disposal experts present at the scene.

Eyewitnesses told the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran News Agency (IRNA) that the consular section staff who spotted the suspicious package immediately moved it out of the building as they informed the police.

The police cordoned off the nearby streets while bomb disposal experts were trying to defuse the device, but witnesses said the parcel blew up outside the building after several hours.

Those present at the scene also said the device was apparently a percussion bomb, which went off in an uncontrolled kaboom. They said the blast did not leave any injury or damage.

This is while police said they carried out a controlled kaboom on the suspect package, though it may not have contained any explosives.

The package was delivered on Friday to Iran's consular section, which is located in the west London Kensington district a few streets away from the Iranian embassy.

Inmates escape in Mexico jailbreak
[Al Jazeera] At least 140 inmates have beat feet from a state prison in the northern Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo, near the border with the US state of Texas.

Police said the prisoners easily but slowly filed out of the jail's main entrance with the complicity of prison guards on Saturday.

"From preliminary investigations, we know that the inmates left by the service vehicle area and were allegedly helped by the penitentiary centre staff," Antonio Garza, a local security chief, said.

"The staff of this prison is at the General Attorney's office disposal and and they have betrayed the state government."

Placing the blame
Mexico's interior ministry has blamed the escape on local authorities, saying they did not properly guard the facility.

The head of the state's jail system has been suspended following the incident.

It is the country's biggest jailbreak since the government began its war on drugs four years ago.

It is not clear who orchestrated the escape, but police sources say a Gulf of Mexico cartel may have offered to free gang allies on condition that they switch sides.

In July, authorities found out that prison officials in a northwestern state had allowed convicts to escape for the night to carry out Dire Revenge™ attacks.

Europe
Suspect package closes airport in Norway
[Emirates 24/7] The discovery of a suspect package forced authorities to close Haugesund airport on the west coast of Norway early Saturday, police said.

The package was found on Friday evening around 11:00 pm (2200 GMT) and after an initial enquiry police decided to close the airport in the early hours of Saturday, Haugesund police chief of staff Edgar Mannes told AFP.

"Normally, we would just view this as a lost/forgotten item. It was the circumstances surrounding the find that caused us to go further and view the item as suspicious," he said, without explaining what the circumstances were or giving any other details.

He did not say why the authorities had delayed in closing the airport.

Bank of America cuts off WikiLeaks
[Al Jazeera] Bank of America has joined several other financial institutions in refusing to handle payments for the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

In a statement on Saturday, the bank said it will no longer process any transactions that it believes are intended for the site, which has released thousands of secret US diplomatic cables.

"This decision is based upon our reasonable belief that WikiLeaks may be engaged in activities that are, among other things, inconsistent with our internal policies for processing payments," the bank said.
A seriously confusing payment. If someone would translate, I'd be grateful.
The action comes as WikiLeaks says it plans to release information about banks. The site's founder has previously said it has a trove of documents on Bank of America.

Other financial institutions, including Visa and PayPal have also stopped handling payments for WikiLeaks, moves which hurt the site's ability to accept donations and support publishing efforts.

The statement is vague, but I think the meaning is clear: "We are not going to aid and abet, either directly or indirectly, active espionage and sedition against the United States."

Iraq
Iraq: 6 dead, 12 wounded during Ashuraa pilgrimage
KARBALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Twelve Ashuraa pilgrims were wounded when the wall of a school in eastern Karbala city they were gathering close to collapsed on Friday while six other aged pilgrims died, according to a local health official.

"Pilgrims were gathered near the fence of a school in the area of Bab Tuwayrij, eastern Karbala, when the wall collapsed, wounding them," Laith al-Sherifi, the director of the Karbala Health Department's Operations Section, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"Medics treated eight wounded people while four others were taken to al-Husseini Hospital to received treatment from various fractures," he added.

"Six aged pilgrims died during the Ashuraa in the thickly-crowded shrines and surrounding areas," he said, noting their bodies were removed to al-Husseini Hospital to hand over to their relatives.

Officials in Karbala have spoken about 3.5 million Ashuraa pilgrims in Karbala, including about 100,000 who came from outside Iraq.

Millions of Shiite Muslims from all over Iraq and neighboring countries had headed for the shrine of Imam al-Hussein Ibn Ali in the holy Shiite city of Karbala for the Ashuraa, or the 10th of Muharram on the Muslim Hegira calendar.

Ashuraa commemorates the slaughter of Imam al-Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, and his family and companions in the battle of Taf in Karbala in the Hegira year 61 (680 in the Gregorian calendar).

The holy Shiite city of Karbala lies 108 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Israeli planes strike Gaza, five dead
[Dawn] Israeli warplanes struck the Gazoo Strip on Saturday night and Paleostinian security sources said five people died in an kaboom.

Warplanes hit central Gazoo to take out a squad of forces of Evil about to fire rockets at Israel, the military said.

Security officials of the territory's Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, rulers said five people were killed in an kaboom in Deir el-Balah, in the central sector of the strip, but did not immediately link the deaths to the air strike.

Southeast Asia
Slaying of Thai soldiers caught on security cam
Thai security forces have launched a manhunt for a group of six suspects caught on closed-circuit camera brutally killing two soldiers escorting a Buddhist monk during his morning rounds in Yala province yesterday.

Camera footage begins with a green pick-up truck parked 20 meters from the shooting scene. Two terrorists suspected insurgents are seen sitting in the front, and another four are on the back of the truck. They drive past the monk and the soldiers, and the four assailants sitting on the truck then shoot the two soldiers. Next, a terrorist suspect jumps down from the truck to take a weapon from one of the bodies. The footage clearly shows the license plate of the Mitsubishi truck used by the assassins.

The dead soldiers were members of the 11th Yala Special Task Force, responsible for providing protection to monks in the province.

The incident happened about 7:30 AM when the two soldiers were accompanying a monk along a road by the Pattani River. The attackers came along in a pickup truck and sprayed them with bullets, Pol Lt Anumat said. The monk narrowly escaped the bullets fired from M16 and AK assault rifles, and escaped with only minor injuries.

In Pattani, a man believed to be a key figure of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) separatist movement was killed and a Border Patrol Police officer was injured in a shootout that erupted at a house in Yaring district on Friday. The dead man is Ruyi Bueraheng, 27, a key RKK figure operating in nearby Mayo district.

Pol Maj Gen Suchart said his team had learned that Ruyi, who has been wanted by police since 2006, was hiding in the house. When launched the raid, there was a gun battle that lasted for 10 minutes before Ruyi was found dead. Pol Sgt Maj Damrong Phalee, one of the police team, was shot in the stomach and rushed to hospital.

Also:

Thai police found the bodies of two unidentified men who had apparently been slashed to death. One was found with a T-shirt that indicated he might have been a soldier from a local army camp. The other had a uniform from a religious school.
