[AlAhram] A Chadian gang attacked a military camp of forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. France Stops 11 Migrants Crossing English Channel
[AnNahar] French maritime authorities intercepted 11 migrants colonists trying to cross the English Channel in an inflatable boat early Thursday, one of a rising number of attempts despite freezing winter temperatures.

Five of the migrants colonists were suffering from hypothermia.

French gendarmes picked up the group 15 nautical miles (28 kilometres) northwest of Calais in the early hours after several ships raised the alarm.

Authorities on both sides of the Channel are worried about a sharp increase in the number of migrants colonists attempting to reach Britannia by sea since November.

British authorities took in 43 people picked up in English waters on Christmas and the following day alone.

The risk of collisions in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, as well as strong currents, high winds and the winter cold, make the crossing extremely dangerous.

For years, thousands of migrants colonists from Africa, the Middle East and Asia have attempted to reach Britannia from La Belle France, mainly by trying to stow away on trucks crossing the Channel.

Officials have been scrambling to understand what is behind the rise in sea crossings.

Some have suggested Britannia's exit from the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
next March could have prompted fears among migrants colonists that border controls could become even tougher after Brexit.

But aid workers say they doubt the change is motivated by a close following of European politics.

Fabien Sudry, the top security official in the Pas-de-Calais region, told AFP this month that he believed the most likely reason is the arrival of larger-than-usual numbers of Iranians.

That has led to new people-smuggling networks operating off the northern French coast, he said.

[DAWN] Two persons allegedly involved in torching of girls schools in Diamer district surrendered to police on Wednesday.

The accused were given to law enforcement agencies at a jirga held in Deral.

The authorities said Shabbir and Asmatullah were allegedly involved in girls schools’ torching incidents in August this year. Police and other law enforcement agencies personnel had since been searching for them.

So far, the jirga has handed over about 50 accused involved in the incident to law enforcement agencies.

Two accused involved in the incident were killed during an encounter with police in August.

A source said the criminal mastermind of the incident was still on the lam.

Talking to mediapersons, Deral jirga members, Rahmat Khaliq, Abdul Shakoor and Malik Maskeen, said the jirga supported law enforcement agencies to maintain peace in the area. They said the government should take further steps for girls’ education in the area.

Arab Israeli who glided into Syria to join Islamic State jailed for 3.5 years
[IsraelTimes] Nidal Salah, 26, convicted in plea deal for illegally leaving the country, giving info to terror group; he returned to Israel in June and was tossed in the clink
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!

An Arab Israeli man who crossed into Syria on a hang glider in 2015 in order to join the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terror group was convicted and sentenced in an Israeli court on Thursday.

Nidal Salah, a 26-year-old resident of the central town of Jaljulia, was sentenced to 43 months in prison by the Central District Court as part of a plea deal.

Salah was convicted on charges of contacting a foreign agent, illegally leaving the country, membership in a terror organization, sending information to an enemy, and other offenses.

In the summer of 2015, Salah, then 23, along with another Arab Israeli man, Hossam Hajalah, decided to join the Islamic State group fighting in Syria.

After gliding into Syria, he was arrested and "brutally interrogated" by IS operatives, who forced him to convey information about Israel, according to the court.

He was later released and officially joined IS, for whom he worked in a factory, producing surveillance and attack drones. The court said he also took part in fighting for the jihadist group and was asked to recruit more Arab Israelis to its ranks.

Salah was later taken captive by the Syrian government during a battle but was able to flee, and was smuggled into The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
in May 2018. He returned to Israel in June on a flight from Turkey and was arrested upon arrival.

The court said it had agreed to a plea deal because of Salah’s confession, expression of remorse, and the "exceptional circumstances" of his captivity by IS.

In the months before he glided to Syria, Salah, who came from a family that was not particularly religious, had become enthralled with the doctrine and ideology of IS.

"His personality changed," his brother Samih told AFP in 2015. "He banned listening to music, and would only listen to (recordings of) the Koran."

Salah and Hajalah practiced using the engine-powered hang gliders for several months before they felt prepared to make the journey.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
when they first tried to fly to Syria from the Golan Heights in mid-October 2015, Hajalah’s hang-glider sustained a "technical malfunction," according to the indictment filed against Salah.

So instead, on October 24, Salah set out by himself to the Golan Heights again in order to fly into Syria alone.

Maoist militants injure eleven soldiers in Compostela clash
[Mindanao Examiner] Maoist militants clashed with Philippine security forces and injured nearly a dozen soldiers in Compostela Valley’s Monkayo town. The fighting broke out on Wednesday after soldiers ran into a group of New People’s Army insurgents in Mount Diwata and a gun battle ensued.

Troops were deployed after villagers secretly reported to the military that militants were recruiting civilians to fight the government. The rebels also planted improvised explosives on roads where security patrols usually pass.

The fighting occurred a day after 19 militants surrendered in Agusan del Sur’s Loreto town. Military spokesman Ezra Balagtey said corruption in the communist party and the rebel group triggered the mass surrender of rebels whose entire unit was operating in Agusan Sur and Compostela Valley provinces.

Insurgents have threatened to launch attacks in retaliation to President Duterte’s order to destroy the militants following the collapse of the peace talks. They are still holding over a dozen pro-government militiamen and soldiers in the region.

Civilian exodus from IS's last Syria bastion
[DAWN] Thousands of civilians, mostly relatives of fighters, are fleeing the Lion of Islam Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group's last stronghold in eastern Syria, a war monitor said on Thursday.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 11,500 people have fled the area since Kurdish-led forces broke IS defences and took the Lion of Islams' main hub of Hajin two weeks ago.

"The past fortnight saw the biggest exodus" since the launch in September of a broad offensive against the IS by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the monitoring group said.

Fighters Brave Lions of Islam were attempting to blend in with the civilians to save their lives and the SDF had managed to detain 700 so far.
The outfit is an alliance of the Kurdish militia which controls northeastern Syria and local Arab fighters that operates with backing from a US-led military coalition.

The Lion of Islam group had already lost all of its major urban centres earlier in 2018 but was clinging to the remote area in the Euphrates River Valley.

The SDF launched an operation involving more than 15,000 fighters to smash the Lion of Islams' last redoubt, known as the Hajin pocket, on Sept 10. They took the town of Hajin on Dec 14, after months of an offensive slowed by Ottoman Turkish threats against the Kurds further north as well as fierce counter-attacks by IS fighters with little to lose.

"Most of the displaced are IS relatives," said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Britannia-based Observatory.

He added however that fighters were attempting to blend in with the civilians to save their lives and that the SDF had managed to detain 700 so far.
