Afghanistan: Taliban offensive forces thousands from homes
[Ynet] Afghan officials say fierce fighting between government forces and Taliban faceless myrmidons in northern Afghanistan has forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

Meher Khuda Sabar, an official in the Refugee and Repatriation Ministry, said Sunday around 2,000 families have been displaced since the Taliban launched a surprise attack near the city of Kunduz nine days ago.

Sabar, who heads the ministry's internal displacement department, says fighting in villages around Kunduz has forced people into the city.

7 injured in bomb attack on Elwak restaurant in Somalia
Elwak -- At least 7 people were reported to have been injured in bomb attack on coffee shop popular with government officials and ordinary people in Elwak town of south of Somalia’s Gedo region, Shabelle said, citing witnesses.
Usually when I dislike a restaurant I just give it a bad review...
Elwak district commissioner, Ibrahim Kajiko, 4 of his security guards and 2 other civilians were separately injured in explosive materials hidden inside the tea shop exploded, a witness told Shabelle Media in Mogadishu.

The DC Ibrahim is said to be in critical condition after he seriously injured in the attack, according officials who asked to be unnamed because they were unauthorized to speak on the media.

No one claimed responsibility for the bomb attack on the coffee shop but Somalia’s Al Shabab militants took the credit for several attacks against Somalia, along with AU forces in Mogadishu.

Egypt charges 40 over allegedly being Islamic State members
[Rudaw] A Nile Delta prosecutor said Sunday he referred 40 people to trial on charges of belonging to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group and planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Egypt.

The announcement marks the first time people in Egypt's Nile Delta have been accused of belonging to the group, which holds a third of Iraq and Syria in its self-declared caliphate.

Bilal Abu Khadra, a prosecutor in Egypt's Sharqiya province, said that those charged communicated with Islamic State murderous Moslems in Syria. He also said the cell's leader confessed to receiving money from the snuffies to recruit and help murderous Moslems travel to Syria.

Khadra said 20 of the defendants are detained, while the others will be tried in absentia.

The Islamic State group gained a foothold in Egypt last November when a Sinai-based bad boy group declared itself an affiliate of the turbans.

Amid the burgeoning Islamic insurgency in Egypt, thousands have been tossed in the clink
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in the course of a sweeping crackdown on Islamists since the military's 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

In the latest attack on security forces, murderous Moslems remotely detonated a bomb Sunday in the Sinai Peninsula south of the city of el-Arish, killing an army conscript and wounding two soldiers, security officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to news hounds.

Several Killed as Soldiers Raid Nigerian Communities
[AnNahar] Nigerian troops have raided communities suspected of harbouring bully boyz in central Plateau state, killing several people, a military front man said Sunday.

"Following frequent attacks on communities around the Plateau-Taraba border by some militiamen, we carried out an operation to flush out members of these murderous gangs," Captain Ikedichi Iweha of the special task force told Agence La Belle France Presse.

He said the soldiers engaged the gunnies in a fierce battle, leaving several people dead.

"I don't have any information on the exact corpse count. But several people were killed during the gun duel," he said.

Iweha denied non-combatants were killed after local media said at least 30 people died when soldiers stormed into Kadarko, Kurmi and Wadata areas on Friday and Saturday in 40 trucks, burning houses and shooting indiscriminately.

"We did not kill any civilian as our mandate was to flush out the bandidos," he said.

Media reports said the soldiers stormed the communities to avenge the death of four soldiers by some bully boyz near the border with neighbouring Taraba state.

Plateau state falls in Nigeria's so-called "Middle Belt", where the mainly Christian south meets the majority Moslem north.

The region has seen a wave of sectarian and communal violence in recent years, claiming hundreds of lives.

Ansarullah Seizes Saudi Missiles, Tanks Bound for Terrorists in Yemen
Ansarullah
...the other name for the Shiite Houthis...
leaders announced the seizure of a large number of Saudi tanks and missiles sent to the Al-Qaeda and pro-Hadi forces in Yemen, Fars news agency reported.tank

"Saudi Arabia has been sending weapons to the terrorists since months before starting the military aggression against Yemen," Ali Mohsen al-Buraimi told FNA on Sunday.

"With the help of the army and revolutionary committees, Ansarullah seized several trucks carrying weapons through the Saudi-Yemeni land border," he added.

Buraimi said that the arms cargo included tens of missiles, tanks and even helicopters which were to be used by the terrorists and the militia supporting the fugitive president Mansour Hadi.

"Saudi Arabia is the source of terrorism and a supporter of terrorists in Yemen, but the Yemeni nation will stand against this aggression," he added.

Also on Friday, Ansarullah revolutionaries announced the seizure of a Saudi surveillance drone in the province of Saada.

The Ansarullah revolutionaries captured the drone, which had parachute landed due to a technical fault, while patrolling the area on Friday.

Soddy Warplanes Pound Strategic Cities across Yemen
[Almanar News] Saudi warplanes carried out on Sunday three sorties on the port city of al-Hudaydah and targeting strategic cities in Yemen.

shellingThe Saudi fighter jets pounded an air defense base there six times, according to media reports.

The Saudi warplanes also pounded the building housing the governor's office in the port city of Crater in the Aden Governorate, and bombed several positions at Aden's international airport.

There has been no immediate report on the number of casualties or the size of material damage in the Yemeni cities.

The Saudi fighter jets also bombarded the northern Yemeni city of Saada, injuring three people there.

Yemen has been since March 26 under brutal aggression by Saudi-US coalition. On April 21, Saudi Arabia declared the end of the aggression, dubbed “Decisive Strom”. However, the Saudi-led warplanes are still conducting airstrikes on several areas across Yemen.

More than 3,500 people were martyred by the Saudi aggression, most of them are civilians. Thousands more were injured.

Egypt extends deployment of army units in Gulf and Red Sea area for 3 months
[AlAhram] The government agrees to continue the deployment of the Egyptian armed forces in support of Saudi-led operations in Yemen and to secure the Gulf region

Egypt's government agreed Sunday to a defence ministry request to extend the deployment of Egyptian armed forces units in the Gulf area and Red Sea for another three months, or until the end of the Saudi-led operation in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
, whichever is earlier.

In a short statement, the cabinet said that it accepted the request "for the sake of Egyptian and Arab national security".

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree on 26 March 2015 to send Egyptian naval and air forces units to the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait for 40 days as part of the Saudi-led military operation against Iranian-backed Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
fighters.

Egypt is participating officially with naval forces, securing the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, as well as with fighting jets that participated in Arclight airstrikes last month against Houthi targets.

1 dead after shooting at event with Muhammad cartoonist
[Atlas Shrugs] COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Shots were fired Saturday at a cafe in Copenhagen as it hosted a freedom of speech event organized by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has faced numerous threats for caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad. Danish police say one man was killed. In a statement, Danish police say they are looking for the perpetrators who drove away in a dark Volkswagen Polo after the shooting shortly before 4 p.m. 10 a.m. EST at the Krudttoenden cafe. The police said the victim was a 40-year-old man.

#11  From the Garland, Tx news conference...

After Harn stated that the two shooters “had assault rifles, came around the back of the car, and started shooting at the police car. The police officer in that car began returning fire and struck both men taking them down,” and that he was told the shooters were wearing some kind of “body protection,” one of the reporters asked “could you brag a bit more about your officer here? I think the scenario is, two guys with assault rifles, who may be wearing protective gear up against one officer with a service pistol. Fair to say he did a hell of job last night.”

Harn responded, “he did what he was trained to do. And under the fire that he was put under, he did a very good job. And probably saved lives.”

#13  I wonder if the Garland police officers on duty last night at the event venue were seriously expecting trouble - their reaction was so fast, and so (pardon the expression) on target. The reaction to foreseen trouble in other cities (yes, looking at YOU, Baltimore) has usually been so hapless. Have we in red state USA already snapped into a wartime mindset? I think it likely that we already have.

Just as an aside, my daughter and I had a meet today, with a retired FBI agent who is exploring having us do a substantial edit of a book - a thriller that he has written about half of. (He is paying us to exercise our good judgment on his project) but we turned to discussing current events, and he said that he seriously advised a side arm and a concealed carry permit ... and if we weren't able to take the expense and trouble, to carry pepper gas canisters. His face was an absolute study when we both reached into our purses and brought out the little canisters attached to our car keys...

#1  Link is Los Angeles news. Local media, including reporters on the scene during the event indicate the shooters got out of their vehicles with backpacks on and possible AK47s firing first at a security guard in the parking lot of the event.

Possible explosives on the scene.

Garland Police Swat were on the scene ahead of time and cut down the assailants immediately.

Timing of the attack appeared to coincide with the end of the event in which many of the attendees would be in the parking lot where the attack took place. However, the event lasted longer than expected and was in the process of adjourning when Swat came in and blocked attendees from leaving the building.

They took Pamela Geller away immediately who then responded on her site Freedom of Speech is under attack.

#2  I like Vodkapundit's take on this:

We’ve probably all entertained notions of how much damage a group like ISIS could do to this country’s psyche with just a few teams of gunmen at shopping malls or the schoolyards.

But they made a mistake, didn’t they, trying to shoot Americans who were on alert. An event like that in a place like Texas — that ain’t Charlie Hebdo, as ISIS just found out yesterday.

Violent religious thugs turn up and try to kill people. Vaporised by police.

Everyone goes back to normal.

BRAVO Texas Police.

BRAVO

At first I wondered if there'd be screams of "islamophobia" but i'm betting there won't be. Those are reserved for when the Islamonutz win and there is a sense of injustice to be stolen or neutered.

There is no sense of injustice today just glee mixed with schadenfraude. The joy I get from the bold expression of freedom by drawing cartoons is only increased by the joy I get from seeing the would-be murderers dispatched without accomplishing their mission.

#5  Obama will try to shut down future cartoon events. Many local governments will disallow such events. But in fact we need more Mohammed cartoons and more satire of this death cult. It needs to keep coming until the barbarians are desensitized to it. Only after desensitization they can begin to think for themselves and then we can engage them in free, fair and robust exchange of ideas about the best way to get to heaven. That which cannot be questioned needs to be questioned more than anything else. Free speech needs to exercised, not suppressed, even if swat teams have to provide security otherwise we have no freedom. If there is no freedom there can be no peace. Excellent work, Garland Police.

Air raids on ISIS in Shingal after militants begin bombing homes
[Rudaw] SHINGAL, djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Province -- US-led warplanes pounded Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in Shingal Sunday evening, reportedly inflicting heavy casualties, after the Death Eaters began blowing up abandoned homes in the Yezidi-dominated town.

"Coalition warplanes conducted five Arclight airstrikes on ISIS positions in the Shingal neighborhoods of Qadisiya, Qasri Smail Bag, and the town of Nasri in Shingal," said Brig. Issa Zeway, commander of Peshmerga forces in the area.

"The Arclight airstrikes followed our information to coalition warplanes about ISIS maneuvers in these areas," he added. He said the raids had inflicted "heavy casualties" on the bully boys.

On Saturday, three separate ISIS convoys were destroyed by coalition Arclight airstrikes in the Shingal area, reportedly killing 24 hard boys, a Peshmerga official told Rudaw.

Sunday's raids came after the jihadis began using explosives to destroy homes in Yezidi-dominated Shingal.

"Daesh has bombed 16 civilian homes inside Shingal," Zeway said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

"It seems Daesh holy warriors in Shingal are now disappointed in ground battle with Peshmerga, so they began exploding Kurdish Yezidis' homes," the commander added.

Zeway said earlier that there were no inhabitants inside the homes. Shingal residents fled the region last year when the Death Eaters made a surprise attack on Kurdish Yezidis in the area.

In recent months, Shingal has been struggling to recover from a devastating ISIS attack last year that unleashed a spree of killings, rapes and kidnappings against the area's predominantly Kurdish Yezidi population.

The region is still marred by sporadic assaults from ISIS against Peshmerga and other Kurdish forces protecting the area. The US-led coalition is carrying out frequent Arclight airstrikes in the Shingal area, targeting ISIS bases and troops.

Philippines' most wanted terrorist reportedly slain by MILF in Mindanao
[Reuters] The Philippines' most wanted terrorist, who escaped after a raid last January that killed 44 elite police commandos, was killed on Sunday in gun battle with Moro militants.

Presidential communications secretary Herminio "Sonny" Coloma said in a statement, "(Abdul) Basit Usman was killed in a firefight in Guindulungan, Maguindanao at around noon today. Usman was the second target of the operations conducted by the PNP-SAF to capture Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan last January 25."

The two terrorists were blamed for a series of bombings in the southern Philippines. Both had links with the defunct Jemaah Islamiyah and carried a combined $6 million bounty from the U.S. State Department.

Coloma gave no other details of the firefight, but security officials said Usman and five others were killed near a creek in Muti village.

#3  When Spain ceded the Philippines to the US it never really controlled the south. Likewise Mexico never really controlled the areas occupied by the Apache and Navajo. It fell to the US to end the former's piracy and slaving and the latter's raiding and marauding. The north was made Christian by the Spanish while the south was left Muslim. Through military action, the US forced a marriage of both. Sort of like the Euros rearranging the ME, with similar results.

Syrian rebels approach Assad’s hometown
Damascus, Syria – Activists reported Saturday that the regular Syrian army is now seeking to advance in the countryside of Latakia, especially toward the village of Salma to eliminate opposition fighters in the areas.

Speaking to ARA News in Latakia, media activists said that on Saturday pro-Assad forces launched what they called “battle for liberating the Latakia countryside”, in an attempt to repel opposition fighters from areas of control in the countryside of Latakia.

“The Syrian army’s aim during these operations is to strengthen its grip on the mountains around the province.”

On the other hand, the armed opposition denied any progress by the Syrian army toward the mountains of Latakia.

“Our fighters (rebels of the Free Syrian Army) are now on the outskirts of Latakia, which is considered the main stronghold of Bashar al-Assad and his Alawite sect, after advancing in the countryside of the province and pushing back the regime forces to the hills near the city,” a military source reported.

According to military sources, battles in Latakia started on Thursday by the regime’s army, backed by local militias, in order to expel the opposition forces from the province and regain control of the areas held by opposition fighters in the nearby province of Idlib, northwestern Syria.

Pro-Assad forces renew chlorine attacks on Idlib, casualties reported
Damascus, Syria – The Syrian regime’s helicopters launched several raids on the cities and towns of the Idlib countryside, using barrel bombs containing toxic gases, which caused the death of at least one civilian and wounded dozens others, primarily children.

Local activists in the Idlib countryside told ARA News that Syrian regime’s helicopters dropped several barrel bombs containing toxic chlorine gas on the town of Neirab, leading to the death of Mutee Jalal, 2, in addition to injuring dozens of others.

Speaking to ARA News, activist Mahmoud al-Hamwi said that other raids by the Syrian helicopters using barrel bombs ــloaded with chlorine gasــ targeted the town of Saraqib in Idlib’s suburbs.

The source stressed that more than 70 people were injured, suffering suffocation due to the use of chlorine gas by the Syrian air force during the raids.

“Children had the lion’s share of injuries during the attack,” medical sources in field hospitals of Idlib were quoted as saying.

The Syrian regime has been waging an intense campaign of aerial bombardments on the city of Idlib and its countryside for weeks after the armed opposition took control of most areas of the province, leaving the regime control over the main highway between Aleppo in the north, Latakia in the west, and the city of al-Mastooma.

International and Syrian human rights organizations confirmed in April that the Syrian regime was responsible for bombing the city of Sermin in Idlib’s countryside with poisonous chlorine gas. The attacks led to the death of an entire family of six, including three children under the age of ten.

Syrian rebels expel ISIS from town near Israeli border
Damascus, Syria – On Sunday, fierce clashes broke out between fighters from the Syrian armed opposition and militants of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) in the town of Qahtaniya in the Quneitra countryside –adjacent to the border between Israel.

Rebels of the Army of Islam announced that its fighters stormed the town of Qahtaniya and were able to control it, after expelling members of the pro-IS Islamist faction of the Jihad Army.

Israeli local media reported that the Israeli army has banned journalists and citizens from approaching the border near the Golan Heights facing the town of Qahtaniyah in western Quneitra, southern Syria.

The Israeli army forces –stationed on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights– bombed a number of military sites inside Syrian territory, in response to several shells and bursts in the buffer-zone between the two countries in Golan, which is controlled by U.N. forces.

Fighting broke out last week between the armed opposition groups and the IS-linked brigade of the Yarmouk Martyrs after the latter killed six opposition fighters near the city of Baath in Quneitra province.

The rebel brigade of the Yarmouk Martyrs (formerly part of the Army of Islam force) in the southern region of Syria announced allegiance to the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) last week, according to an official announcement by the brigade.

Islamic State reports new gains northeastern Syria
Tel Temir, Syria – Fierce battles continue between the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the eastern countryside of Tel Temir (50 km west of Hasakah), northeastern Syria, after the group launched a major offensive on the villages along the Khabur River, reaching the highway between Aleppo and Hasakah.

The area has seen heavy fighting during the last two days, especially in the villages of Tel Jadaya and Tel Fwaida, north of the al-Khabur River, resulting in the death of dozens on both sides. Nevertheless, IS was able to make new gains in the area.

Speaking to ARA News, Damhat Zagro, a fighter in the YPG ranks, said that an IS suicide attack struck the YPG headquarters in the village of Tel Rumman.

“Following two successive attacks on the village (Tel Rumman) from different directions, the group was easily able to control the northern route towards the city of Hasakah,” he explained.

In a related development, an Assyrian fighter from the Haras al-Khabur forces, Mikhail Dinkha, told ARA News that the terrorist group received new reinforcements from Aleppo, including more militants and heavy armored vehicles.

“A number of IS terrorists are currently stationed in the vicinity of the village of Ghibish in the western countryside of Tel Temir, and dozens of other militants from the group are stationed in the southern areas of Hassakeh Dam,” the source added. “Several others took positions in the al-Hol junction with Shaddadi in the east.”

In the meantime, the region saw intensive sorties by U.S.-led coalition warplanes, targeting IS locations in the village of Ghibish.

In another development, a medical source from the YPG-linked military hospital (The Hospital of Martyr Khabat) told ARA News that more than 15 fighters of the self-defense forces (sponsored by Auto-Administration) were injured in an IS-led ambush near Tel Temir, most of them received treatment in the city of Amuda.

This came as field activists speculated that the attacks are an attempt to compensate for its big losses of last month, which resulted in the destruction of many heavy vehicles and the death of dozens of militants in the villages located south of the al-Khabur area.

Foiled: Plot to kill Saudi envoy
[ArabNews] Saudi Ambassador to Leb Ali Awad Asiri confirmed on Sunday that there was an liquidation attempt against him by a major terrorist group.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
he said, the Lebanese authorities had not given him details of the attempt, which also targeted the Saudi Embassy staff in Beirut.

"My safety and the safety of Saudi mission are the responsibility of the Lebanese security forces," Asiri told Al-Arabiya news channel.

The ambassador's confirmation came after Al-Shara magazine reported that the Lebanese police had foiled an attempt against Asiri and that two individuals -- a Syrian and a Paleostinian -- were tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
for their involvement in the plot.

Some Saudi bloggers suspected Tehran's role behind the liquidation attempt while some others said Hezbollah would have played a role.
Would anyone be surprised if either were involved?

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
targets in Iraq and Syria in a 24-hour period ending Saturday, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a corrected statement that was released on Sunday.

Three of the strikes were in Syria and hit land features, denying the Islamic State "tactical advantage," the military said.

In Iraq, 16 Arclight airstrikes near djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Ramadi, Bayji, Sinjar, Tal Afar and Fallujah hit units, buildings and fighting positions, the statement said. The strikes took place on Friday and Saturday.

Government
Ex-Klingon Official Mike Morell: GOP Distorted Agency Analysis of Benghazi
[AyePee] A former CIA deputy director says Republicans repeatedly distorted the agency's analysis of the Benghazi attack in 2012 that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. He also says U.S. intelligence agencies failed to recognize that al-Qaida would rapidly regain strength after the killing of Osama bin Laden.
'The Prophet' died on Monday, 8 June 632, in Medina, at the age of 62 or 63. The faith lived on. Did someone in the intelligence community miss a bit of history ?
The faith not only lived on, but the conquest accelerated logarithmically.
In his new book, Michael Morell dismissed the notion that CIA officers and the military "were ordered to stand down" and not come to the aid of their comrades in Benghazi, The New York Times reported. Morell also says there is no evidence the Central Intelligence Agency had conspired with the White House to spin the Benghazi story to protect then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Ah yes, his new book. Hope it enjoys the same amazing success as her book. BTW, Clinton Foundation provide the advance ?
But he also wrote that the White House embellished some of the talking points provided by the CIA about the Benghazi attack, which killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in September 2012.
Will Morell be using our famouns 'Master of the Obvious' graphic at this point in his book ?
Morell also wrote that U.S. intelligence agencies failed to recognize that the al-Qaida terrorist network would rapidly retain strength in the Mideast after bin Laden was killed in 2011. The CIA told policymakers that the Arab Spring movement would "damage al-Qaida by undermining the group's narrative," Morell wrote.
Er, huh....most unfortunate we didn't have clearer thinking at top levels of our intelligence community.
Morell's book, "The Great War of Our Time," provides details of his thinking about the Benghazi attack and its aftermath that are the subject of congressional hearings that some in the GOP will likely use to criticize Clinton as the likely Democratic nominee runs for president.
Ring me up if he devotes a few pages in his book to the Hildebeest's home based e-mail server and communications system.
Morell was a career analyst who rose through the ranks before ending up in the position of deputy director. He served under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
'Career analyst' promoted on time was he? Something like Harf no doubt, but with different plumbing we must assume....or no? And the icky operators and Case Officers, how did they fare on the promotion and advancement ladder ?

#2  With his penchant for prevarication he should pursue political office.

#3  Morell displayed classic body language of deception while testifying in front of Congress re: Benghazi, when directly qestioned about contact with the White House about talking points of terrorism vs demonstration gone wrong. His prior and later answers were simple and straightforward, yes or no, unflinching, but when discussing (actually denying) contact the evening of the attack, he was unable to maintain eye contact, prevaricated, etc. It was telling I thought, - classic interrogation 101 - when watching the testimony live, but surprisingly, no one in the media mentioned it. Or maybe not so surprising.
