APS massacre mastermind killed in US drone strike
[DAWN] The criminal mastermind of the Army Public School massacre, responsible for the death of 144 students and staff members, has been killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan, two security bigshots claim.

They told Dawn that Umar Mansour, alias Khalifa Mansour, alias Umar Naray, had been killed, along with another murderous Moslem leader Qari Saifullah, in the US drone attack in the Bandar area of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province on Saturday.

One of the officials said they had credible reports of Mansour having been killed with Saifullah, who was in charge of jacket wallahs. "What we have is pretty credible."

There was, however, some confusion over the death of Qari Saifullah. While one official said there were 90 per cent chances that he too had been killed along with Naray, another official said they were still trying to figure out whether he was there on the spot when the drone struck.

The US State Department had on May 25 designated Umar Naray a global terrorist, thus clearing the path for his inclusion in the hit-list. The State Department’s announcement came four days after a drone strike killed Afghan Taliban leader Akhtar Mansour in Balochistan

on May 21. A security official at the time had denied there was any quid pro quo between the two countries.

There is neither any official confirmation from the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) nor any independent source corroborates Naray’s death. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
if true, his death would serve a severe blow to the TTP.

Naray, because of his violent and back-to-back major terrorist attacks, was being regarded by Pak security agencies as a major threat.

"The focus would now be on getting Abdul Wali, alias Omar Khalid Khurasani
...intel chief of the Jamaatul Ahrar TTP splinter group, or whatever it's calling itself these days...
, and Maulvi Fazlullah, also believed to be in Afghanistan," the officials said, adding that Pakistain had shared intelligence and coordinated with Afghanistan, and while Kabul

Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
did not deny their presence on its soil, they nonetheless cited operational issues to go after them.

and Mohmand and is believed to be the main character involved in extortion and assassination'>assassination
s in the lovely provincial capital and the tribal region.

Fazlullah, on the other hand, is mostly focused on his native Swat.

Umar Naray was criminal mastermind of the Dec 16, 2014, attack on the Army Public School which had left 122 students and 22 teachers and staff dead. It was one of the worst terrorist attacks which prompted the government to declare an all-out war against terrorist outfits in the country.

The two murderous Moslem commanders belonged to TTP’s Tariq Geedar group and used to operate in Peshawar and adjoining Frontier Region Peshawar and Darra Adamkhel.

Mansour had fled to Afghanistan following a military operation in Khyber tribal region and continued to operate from there. He was held responsible for the Sept 2015 attack on a Pakistain Air Force base in Peshawar’s Badaber area, which left 29 people dead. He was also behind the Jan 2016 attack on the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda in which 18 students and faculty members bit the dust.

ISIS Top Dawg, 13 others pining for the fjords in Nangarhar
A commander leading the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group was killed during an operation in eastern Nangarhar province.

According to the defense sources, the ISIS commander was identified as Meera Jan and was killed together with his 13 fighters.

The sources further added that the operation was conducted in Kot district of Nangarhar province where the loyalists of the terror group are actively operating.

At least 5 others were also wounded and various types of heavy and light weapons were destroyed during the operations.

The loyalists of the terror group based in Afghanistan have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as local officials earlier said at least 31 loyalists of the terror group were killed during the ongoing operations in Nangarhar province.

The Afghan forces are regularly targeting the loyalists of ISIS terrorist group to curb their insurgency activities as they attempt to expand operations in Afghanistan.

The US Forces in Afghanistan are also targeting the loyalists of the terror by conducting airstrikes.

The US forces stepped up airstrikes against the ISIS loyalists earlier this year after they were granted more authorities by President Barack Obama.

The increased raids against ISIS loyalists followed amid concerns that they are attempting to expand foothold in the country besides attempting to consolidate operations with the terror group in Iraq and Syria.

Explosion in a classroom in Khost leaves 5 students, 1 teacher wounded
At least six people were wounded after an explosive device went off inside a classroom in a school located in the southeastern Khost province of Afghanistan.

According to the local education officials, at least five students and a teacher were wounded in the blast.

The officials further added that the explosives were planted in a classroom filled with 6th grade students in Matiullah Shahid high school in Khost city.

No group including the Taliban militants has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Taliban militants and insurgents belonging to other militant groups frequently use improvised explosive devices to target the security forces.

The militants normally use the improvised explosive devices on roadside while numerous incidents involving explosions inside mosques have been reported.

But detonating explosives in a classroom have been rare in the country and it is yet not clear who the target of the attack was.

Khost is among the relatively peaceful provinces in southeastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed militant groups have been attempting to expand their insurgency across the country during the recent months.

US drone strike kills four suspected militants in Afghanistan
PESHAWAR: At least four suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike in Nazyan district of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, near Pakistan's Khyber Agency, sources said on Sunday.

Security sources said the the drone strike targeted a militant compound in the Nazyan district, killing four suspected militants.

Till 2014, Nazyan district had been serving as a safe haven for the Mullah Fazllullah led Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to security officials, militants based in the Nazyan district had planned the devastating attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, which left over 140 children and teachers dead and scores injured.

Pakistani security forces also carried out ground offensives in Khyber Agency, particularly the Tirah Valley of Bara which borders Nazyan.

The forces cleared much of the Bara plain in Operation Khyber One launched in October 2014, while in a follow-on operation named Khyber-2, which ended in June 2015, cleared the fierce Tirah terrain consisting of deep valleys and high mountains.

'Terrorists' kill deputy mayor in Mali: Security source
[AlAhram] A local official in central Mali was killed on Monday in an attack that left his body "riddled" with bullets, security sources and an eyewitness told AFP.

Deputy mayor of the Wouro-Mody commune Kola H. Dia became the latest victim of Islamist myrmidon and criminal groups which take advantage of Mali's dire security situation by frequently targeting symbols of state power including government officials and soldiers.

A Malian security source told AFP under condition of anonymity that "turbans slaughtered the deputy mayor of the commune" on Monday morning.

He said it was a "assassination."

A resident of Wouro-Mody who saw Dia's body said the gunnies left him "riddled" with bullets before making off with his mobile phone.

Dia was killed in the same area of the Mopti region where five Togolese UN peacekeepers were fatally ambushed on May 29. There was no claim of responsibility but the UN at the time called it a "terrorist" attack.

Northern Mali has seen repeated violence since it fell under the control of Tuareg-led rebels who allied with Islamist myrmidon groups linked to Al-Qaeda in 2012.

Attacks are now becoming more frequent further south, in the country's centre, close to its borders with Burkina Faso

Although Islamists were largely ousted by an ongoing French-led military operation launched in January 2013, sporadic attacks from desert hideouts are common.

Egypt foils third illegal immigration attempt in less than 24 hours
It looks like this is the new route for the migrants colonists.
[AlAhram] Egypt has foiled a third attempt of illegal immigration in less than 24 hours, the military front man announced Monday.

Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said in an official statement that the Egyptian navy inspected a fishing boat sailing off the coast of Alexandria, where it discovered 179 people of different nationalities ‐ including Egypt, Sudan, Comoros, Eretria, Guinea, and Ghana - on board.

According to Samir, the boat was destined for southern Europe. He did not specify which country the board was expected to land.

Those aboard of the boat where transferred to Abu Qir port where they were provided medical care and then handed over to other investigating authorities to undergo legal procedures.

On Sunday, the naval forces intercepted a boat near Alexandria and found it was carrying 143 people of different nationalities - including Egyptians, Sudanese, Syrians, Paleostinians and Æthiopians - heading to Europe.

The forces also managed to stop another boat carrying five people from Egypt in addition to four crew members near Alexandria.

In recent years, thousands of refugees and migrants colonists have attempted to cross the Mediterranean in search of better jobs and opportunities. Hundreds have been locked away

Two Egypt policemen killed in Sinai bombing
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A roadside kabooming in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula killed two coppers on Monday, the interior ministry said.

The ISIS group's self-styled Amaq news agency said a bomb planted by Death Eaters targeted a police mine clearing vehicle, but it was not clear whether it was referring to the same incident.

The interior ministry said a police lieutenant and a sergeant were killed when a roadside kaboom tore through a convoy, also wounding two officers and a conscript.

Militants in the peninsula bordering Israel and the Paleostinian Gazoo Strip have killed hundreds of soldiers and coppers in attacks since the army toppled Islamist president Mohammed Mursi in 2013.
Al Ahram sez there were two bombs:
Four Egyptian policemen were killed and six others were injured in two blasts in North Sinai, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

According to security sources and eyewitnesses, unidentified assailants planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on a north Al-Arish road. The IED then detonated while a police vehicle was passing, killing a first lieutenant and a first sergeant and injuring three other police members.

In another blast, a brigadier general and a conscript were killed, and three other conscripts were injured after an IED exploded in Al-Montabh in central Sinai when an IED targeted a patrolling police vehicle.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Nigerian Islamists Hack Female Pastor to Death – Place Her Head on Bible
[Gateway Pundit] The husband of a female preacher hacked to the death in Abuja has shed more light into the gruesome murder of the 42 year-old mother of seven, Mrs. Eunice Elisha, the wife of a Redeemed Pastor who was murdered in cold blood in the early hour of Saturday July 9th by suspected Muslim fanatics while evangelizing around Gbazango and Pipeline area of Kubwa, a satellite town in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Eunice, who was a deaconess at the Divine Touch Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Old NEPA Road, Phase 4, Kubwa, was reportedly beheaded and stabbed in the stomach and leg by her killers, but a statement by the police has already debunked that claim.

It was learnt that her killers left her in the pool of her blood and carefully put her "severed head on her Bible, with megaphone and cell phone beside her dead body" but the Commissioner of Police in a statement said her body was intact.

Her death body was discovered by the residents who alerted the police and evacuated her to the police station where her husband went to identify her.

South African twins accused of plot to bomb US embassy, Jewish sites
More on this story from yesterday:
[IsraelTimes] Two sets of South African siblings appeared in court Monday on accusations that include plotting to blow up the US Embassy and various Jewish institutions in South Africa.

The four were allegedly planning to fly to Syria, where they were due to undergo training by a terror organization, police front man Hangwane Mulaudzi said.

"The allegation is that after the training, they would come back to South Africa," Mulaudzi said, adding that security officials hoped there would be more arrests.

Twin brothers Brandon-Lee Thulsie and Tony-Lee Thulsie were charged with conspiring to blow up the US Embassy in Pretoria and various Jewish targets. Mulaudzi said the twins were placed in durance vile
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in Johannesburg on Saturday.

A provisional charge sheet says the brothers may have links to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bully boy group.

Siblings Fatima Patel and Ibrahim Mohammed Patel appeared in a separate court Monday after a stun grenade and live ammunition were confiscated during a raid on their home outside Johannesburg on Saturday night, said Phindi Louw, a spokeswoman for the National Prosecuting Authority.

All four of the accused are expected to have the chance to apply for bail next week.

This was not the first time South Africa had arrested someone suspected of trying to leave to join the Islamic State group. Last year, a 15-year-old girl was arrested on a flight in Cape Town while on her way to join the group, the state security ministry said. It was the country’s first known detention linked to the murderous Moslem group.
An Nahar adds the following about the Brothers Thulsie:
"They had been on our radar since 2015. They tried to leave the country twice, through OR Tambo airport and through Mozambique (to join IS)," Mulaudzi said.

According to court papers, in addition to plotting to attack the embassy and Jewish targets, the suspects were also accused of inciting others to "aid and abet them", according to the provisional charge sheet.

Moslems account for only 1.5 percent of South Africa's 53 million people and the country has so far escaped the jihadist attacks staged in several countries on the continent.

"We have got fairly verifiable evidence of South Africans going to the geographical Islamic State (in Syria)," Nick Piper of Signal Risk, a Cape Town-based security consultancy, told a press briefing recently. "There is radicalization happening within South Africa. There is a strong possibility that if an incident does happen, it will be a South African."

130 Kurds die in Turkey
[ARA News] CIZRE – The Turkish government is blocking access for independent investigations into alleged mass abuses against civilians across the Kurdish region southeast Turkey, Human Rights Watch said today. The alleged abuses include unlawful killings of civilians, mass forced civilian displacement, and widespread unlawful destruction of private property. Moreover, the report confirms that Turkish security forces fired on civilians in the streets carrying white flags.

“The government should promptly grant the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights permission to enter the area and investigate according to its standards,” HRW said.

Since the July 2015 breakdown of a peace process to end the decades-long conflict between the Turkish state and the armed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), violence and armed clashes in the southeastern region have escalated. During security operations since August, the authorities have imposed curfews on 22 towns and city neighbourhoods, preventing non-governmental organizations, journalists and lawyers from scrutinizing those operations or any resulting abuses by security forces or armed groups.

According to HRW, authorities have blocked rights groups – including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Physicians for Human Rights – from trying to document abuses even after curfews and operations ended.

“The Turkish government’s effective blockade of areas of the southeast fuels concerns of a major cover-up,” said Emma Sinclair-Webb, senior Turkey researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The Turkish government should give the UN and nongovernmental groups immediate access to the area to document what’s going on there.”

Most of the deaths, destruction, and mass displacement occurred in nine towns, including Cizre. More than 355,000 people have been temporarily displaced within towns or to other nearby towns and villages, or to other regions of Turkey. At least 338 civilians have been killed in places where clashes broke out between security forces and the PKK-linked Civil Protection Units (YPS), HRW said.

Moreover, a list of dead compiled by Cizre-based lawyers showed that 66 civilians, including 11 children were killed by gunfire or mortars, in operations between December 14 and February 22, 2015. “The available information also indicates that security forces surrounded three buildings and deliberately and unjustifiably killed about 130 people – among whom were unarmed civilians and injured combatants – trapped in the basements,” HRW said.

The majority of deaths of Cizre residents occurred in neighborhoods where the YPS had erected barricades and dug trenches, and clashes took place between security forces and armed groups. However, some civilians were killed in neighborhoods where there were no clashes or barricades.

On December 25, in an area of Sur where no barricades had been erected and no armed groups were operating, members of the security forces fired on and killed a 3-month-old baby, Miray İnce, and her 82-year-old great-grandfather, Ramazan İnce, relatives of the victims told Human Rights Watch. “As baby Miray, my brother Hasan’s granddaughter, was carried down the steps in the courtyard by her aunt they were shot at from the hill opposite where the military had placed snipers and armored vehicles. Miray was hit by a bullet,” Abdurrahman İnce (61) told HRW. “At first we thought she was dead but then she cried and we called 155 [the police] to get her to hospital. The emergency services told us that we should go as two men and a woman carrying a white flag as far as the ambulance. That’s exactly what we did,” he added.

However, when the Kurdish family carried a white flag, his father Ramazan and the baby Miray were shot again from the open hill where security forces were positioned. “Finally, a member of parliament, Faysal Sarıyıldız, got an ambulance to them but both my father and baby Miray died,” Ince said. “Even when the police told you things were safe, the security forces kept on shooting.”

“Credible accounts of Turkish security forces deliberately killing civilians, including children, when they were carrying white flags or trapped in basements should be ringing loud alarm bells,” said Sinclair-Webb. “The prosecutor in Cizre should conduct a full, effective, independent investigation capable of delivering justice for the victims.”

India-held Kashmir seethes as 25 killed amid protests after killing of militant commander
[DAWN] Authorities in India-held Kashmire (IHK) were struggling Monday to contain protests by residents angry after 25 people were killed in weekend demonstrations as youths defied a curfew to rally in the streets against the killing of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

Wani, the Hizbul Mujahideen chief of operations, was killed in fighting on Friday after Indian troops, acting on a tip, cordoned a forested village in the southern Kashmire's Kokernag area, said Police Director-General K. Rajendra. Two other members of Wani's group were also killed in the shootout.

Indian authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in most parts of IHK after Wani was killed, but massive protests continued despite attempts to suppress violence.

Paramilitary troops and police in riot gear patrolled villages and towns in the region. Most shops were shuttered, businesses were closed and cellphone services were suspended.

But by noon Monday, crowds were ignoring the clampdown to gather in parts of the main city of Srinagar and other towns.

Protesters try to storm airbase in held Kashmir
[DAWN] Several hundred Kashmiri protesters tried to storm a military airbase in India-held Kashmire on Monday as the corpse count in festivities between Indian security forces and demonstrators reached 30, while Pakistain and India traded allegations over the violent situation.

Thousands of people again defied the curfew imposed across the valley to take to the streets and tried to storm the Indian Air Force base, about 25km south of Srinagar, as the worst civilian unrest since 2010 spread. The protesters also set cop shoppes and vehicles on fire, according to AFP.

Police said Indian security personnel fired live ammunition and tear gas to try to enforce the curfew. The dear departed were mainly protesters killed by gunshot wounds, they added.

There were also reports of injured protesters being targeted, as one local doctors association said tear gas canisters had been fired inside a hospital emergency room.

Another group, the Jammu and Kashmire Coalition for Civil Society, alleged that police had attacked ambulances taking the maimed to hospital.

While the authorities cut off internet and mobile phone networks in a bid to quell the protests, those leading the demonstrations said the protests be extended by two more days and called a rally in Srinagar on Friday, according to AFP.

Policemen gun down man in Sindhi Muslim
KARACHI: A man was shot dead Sunday night by plainclothed 'policemen' in a police mobile who opened fire on a car carrying two men fighting with each other.

Abrar went to a market in Saddar to sell his mobile phone to a man identified as Dil Nawaz, who tried to race away in his car without paying for the handset, Superintendent Police (SP) Dr Saad Ahmed told Dawn.

Abrar chased Dil Nawaz's vehicle on foot and managed to get in the car, the SP said, adding that Dil Nawaz's car carried a fake number plate.

"The two continued to fight in the car, eventually arriving at Sindhi Muslim where a police mobile was stationed. The policemen in the mobile, apparently sensing unusual activity, opened fire on the car, killing Abrar and injuring Nawaz," the SP said.

However, the police mobile's presence in the area was unusual, the SP said, as it was not supposed to be stationed there. Police are tracking down the policemen who shot at Nawaz's vehicle, SP Ahmed said.

Inspector General (IG) Sindh A.D. Khawaja took notice of reports of the alleged plainclothed policemen in the police mobile who fired at the vehicle, and ordered the Deputy Inspector General East to ensure all investigations regarding the incident are transparent and impartial.

The IG Sindh directed the concerned authorities to produce a comprehensive report on the incident.

Earlier in January this year, a young man named Shaharyar was shot dead by police while riding a motorcycle in Gizri after he allegedly did not stop at the police check post in the area.

Israel outlaws ‘Iran-backed’ Palestinian group
[IsraelTimes] Defense Ministry says ’The Youth Group’ is aided by Hezbollah, plans to attack Israel and bring down PA

Israel announced Monday it had outlawed a Paleostinian group it said acted as a front for Iran-directed terror activities targeting Israelis and the regime of Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman signed the order outlawing Al-Hirak Al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
i ("The Youth Movement") at the recommendation of the Shin Bet internal security agency, a ministry statement read.

The decision followed "significant information indicating that the group is directed by Hezbollah and Iran to carry out attacks against Israelis, and ignite a wave of violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem at Israel and the Paleostinian Authority," it read.

While the group claimed to be a collective of youths seeking to change the situation in the West Bank through civil activity, it was in fact "a terror group headed by two opponents of the Paleostinian Authority," the statement read.

The Defense Ministry named them as Munir Asli, living in Leb, and Hilmi Balbisi, living in Jordan. It said they are "directed and funded by Hezbollah and Iran," which have both transferred "hundreds of thousands of shekels" over the past two years to fund the group’s activities.

Members of Al-Hirak Al-Shabaabi were engaged in Molotov cocktailing and bombing attacks on Israeli targets in the West Bank and Jerusalem, as well as stirring unrest on the volatile Temple Mount compound in the city, the ministry said.

The group’s goals included "toppling the regime of [Abbas] and collapsing the Paleostinian Authority."

"Exposing the organization, the extent of its activity and true goals shows once again the efforts of Iran and Hezbollah to advance terror activity against Israel," the ministry statement read.

Israel nabs 2 Palestinian intel officers for making, selling guns
[IsraelTimes] In crackdown on illegal weapons in the West Bank, security forces seize firearms, ammo

Israeli forces locked away
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
four Paleostinian men outside of Nablus on Sunday night, including two members of the Paleostinian security service, who are believed to be involved in the production and sale of illegal weapons in the West Bank and Israel, the Shin Bet security agency said.

Numerous guns, ammunition and four drill presses, believed to have been used to create improvised weapons, were also seized in the raid, which took place in the village of Urif, just south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, the Shin Bet said.

During the raid, Israeli forces picked up Assem Najah Sharif Safadi and Ali Najah Sharif Safadi, residents of Urif who serve as intelligence officers in the Paleostinian Authority’s security service, the Shin Bet said.

Saadi Najah Sharif Safadi, 46, and Najah Assad Najah Safadi, 24, were also arrested in the crackdown, the security service said.

The four men appeared to be related to one another, but this could not be immediately confirmed with law enforcement.

"The assessment is that the above-mentioned took advantage of their connections to also sell [guns] to arms dealers in Israel," the Shin Bet said.

The overnight raid was a joint operation conducted by the Shin Bet, the IDF’s Samaria Regional Brigade, the Nahal Infantry Brigade, the undercover Duvdevan Unit and the Israel Police’s Samaria Division.

In addition to the locally produced "Carlo" submachine guns, which are loosely based off the designs of the Swedish Carl Gustav submachine gun, Israeli forces found pistols and components of M-16 assault rifles.

"This move is part of an ongoing effort against the production and sale of weaponry in the West Bank," the Shin Bet said.

In the past two weeks, the Paleostinian Authority has also begun cracking down on illegal guns in Nablus and Jenin, following a number of internal conflicts that left several dead in the West Bank, the Paleostinian Ma’an news site reported Monday.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
the Shin Bet denied any connection or collaboration between the Israel and Paleostinian forces in the effort.

The Carlo-style submachine gun has been the scourge of Israeli law enforcement throughout the recent violence in the West Bank and Israel. The easily produced but deadly weapon has been used in multiple Paleostinian attacks on Israeli civilians and security forces in the past year.

Last month, two cousins from the village of Yatta opened fire in a Tel Aviv restaurant with such weapons, killing four and wounding over a dozen others, before they could be arrested.

The often fully automatic Carlo can be created from nothing more than a water pipe and some basic tools, including the types of drill presses seized in Sunday night’s raid.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF soldiers arrested seven other Paleostinians overnight, six of them for rock throwing and taking part in violent protests and one for undisclosed reasons, the army said.

The IDF is currently conducting a manhunt in the southern West Bank for a gunman who shot up Israeli car on a highway between settlements Saturday night, lightly injuring one man.

Yet another theory on the downed Mi-35 helo.
BLUF: [WAPO] The Conflict Intelligence Team, a Russian open-source investigating team that uses data from social networks to report on the Russian military, said that the helicopter "had non-retracted landing gear and short wings, which are distinct features of a Mi-35M helicopter." But the post also made a controversial claim: that the helicopter may have been downed by friendly-fire rockets from a wingman.

"During combat, the leader could have gotten into the line of fire of the ... helicopter that followed it a bit above," the report said, noting that the gunship launched unguided rockets shortly before it was shot down. "This explains why [the Islamic State] did not publish a video of their missile launch."

This is new to combat in Syria and has only been in country for a couple of months. I'm a believer what we are seeing is something like 20mm rounds, or their equivalent being used by Isis.

Iran indicts dual UK, US, Canadian nationals on unknown charges
[IsraelTime] Foreigner also charged as fears grow Tehran wants all four as bargaining chips in a future prisoner swap

Iran announced Monday that three dual nationals and a foreigner held in the country have been indicted on unknown charges, part of a series of detentions in the wake of last year’s nuclear deal with world powers.

The four, who have ties to Britannia, Canada and the US, all are believed to have been detained by hardliners in Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards. The reasons for their arrests remain unclear, though the husband of one of them says his family was told by the Guard she’d be released if the British government agreed to their demands.

According to Iran’s semi-official ISNA and Tasnim news agencies, Tehran’s prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi named the four as: Homa Hoodfar, an Iranian-Canadian retired professor at Montreal’s Concordia University; Siamak Namazi , an Iranian-American businessman who has advocated for closer ties between the two countries and whose father is also held in Tehran; Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British woman working for the Thomson Rooters Foundation, the charitable arm of the news agency; and Nizar Zakka, a US permanent resident from Leb who has done work for the American government.

The four were placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in connection to separate cases over the past year. Family members and representatives of the four say they did nothing wrong.

Dowlatabadi’s statement did not elaborate on the charges. He said another seven people faced charges related to the unrest that surrounded the country’s disputed 2009 presidential election.

Iran does not recognize dual nationalities. In previous cases involving dual nationals, like the detention of Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, officials initially announced indictments had been handed down without providing specifics. Later, news organizations with close ties to security services offered details of the charges.

Those detained typically face trial in Iran’s Revolutionary Court, a closed-door tribunal which handles cases involving alleged attempts to overthrow the government. Rezaian was convicted but later released in January as part of a prisoner swap between Iran and the US.

While Iranian officials have not publicly demanded another swap, analysts have suggested the detainees might be used by hardliners as bargaining chips. Richard Ratcliffe, the husband of Zaghari-Ratcliffe, said as much in a statement to journalists Monday marking the 100th day of his wife’s detention.

Ratcliffe said the Guards told his wife’s family she would be released as long as the British government reached "an agreement" with them. He said they did not elaborate, other than to say it did not involve the recent nuclear deal, which lifted economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for it limiting its atomic program.

His infant daughter Gabriella also remains in Iran, as authorities seized her passport.

"That the Iranian authorities are willing to hold a mother and baby hostage for domestic politics and as a bargaining chip in their international negotiations shows that they have reached a very dark place," Ratcliffe said.

Iranian officials in Tehran could not be reached for comment. Iran’s mission to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Monday’s announcement did not include any mention of Namazi’s father, Baquer Namazi, a former Iranian and UN official in his 80s who is also detained. Also unaccounted for is former FBI agent Robert Levinson, who vanished in Iran in 2007 while on an unauthorized CIA mission.

The hardline crackdown since the nuclear accord has included the detention and sentencing of Iranian poets, filmmakers, artists and others. Most recently, famed Iranian sculptor Parviz Tanavoli found himself banned from traveling abroad and had his passport seized.

On Monday, Tanavoli told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that police had filed a complaint alleging that his work was "disturbing public opinion" and "spreading lies." The sculptor called the complaint "baseless" and said his lawyer would fight against his travel ban, which prevented him from giving lectures in London.

Coalition air strikes kill ISIS militants in Syria
[AlArabiya] Air strikes by US-led coalition warplanes and artillery fire from Turkey killed eight ISIS militants in northern Syria, state-run Anadolu Agency cited the Turkish military as saying on Sunday.

Ten ISIS targets were hit in the strikes, which also destroyed one building used by the militants as a base, the agency said.

It said Turkish army howitzers fired on the militants as they were preparing to open fire on Turkey on Saturday from the areas of Baragitah, Tel Ahmar and Shabaniye in northern Syria.

Turkey and the coalition have carried out regular strikes against ISIS in the area in recent months after rocket attacks by the militants on the Turkish border town of Kilis.

Kilis, just across the frontier from an ISIS-controlled region of Syria, has been hit by rockets more than 70 times this year. More than 20 people have been killed.

Syrian rebels counterattack against Syrian regulars in Aleppo
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Syrian rebel fighters on Tuesday launched a fierce offensive on positions for the pro-regime forces in Aleppo city, northern Syria, and recaptured a key district.

Rebels of the Aleppo Conquest [Fateh Halab] coalition attacked strongholds of the pro-regime forces north Aleppo and recaptured the Bani Zaid district.

Speaking to ARA News, Aleppo Conquest coalition’s spokesman Mussalam Salloum said the attack comes amid attempts by their fighters to reopen their only supply route into Aleppo city, known as Castello Road.

“We have recaptured Bani Zaid district from pro-Assad militias after bombing their strongholds and destroying two tanks,” Salloum said, adding that 18 regime forces were killed in the clashes.

“They [Syrian regime forces] eventually withdrew from the district, and we are currently preparing a new offensive to regain the recently lost areas of Aleppo, including the Castello Road,” the rebel official told ARA News.

This comes just one day after the regime forces hit the rebel headquarters in the city and killed at least 26 fighters.

The Castello Road leads into the opposition-held eastern half of Aleppo city, which is now effectively besieged by Syrian regime forces.

On Thursday, the regime troops seized a hilltop within range of the strategic Castello supply line. Then by Saturday, the Syrian regime forces imposed full control over the Castello Road, putting rebels under heavy siege.

“We won’t give up. The fight for Castello will continue, and our forces are preparing heavy attacks on the pro-Assad troops there,” rebel spokesman Saleh al-Zein told ARA News in Aleppo earlier on Monday.

According to al-Zein, different factions of the armed Syrian opposition decided to cooperate in order to reopen their only supply line into the key Aleppo city.

The Aleppo Conquest coalition is comprised of some 31 armed groups that co-ordinate attacks against Syrian government forces, ISIS and the Kurds in Aleppo governorate.

ISIS Top Dawg dies in battle in Manbij
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Subsequent to heavy clashes with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday made new gains in the northern countryside of Aleppo, killing and wounding dozens of ISIS militants, military sources reported.

The SDF troops clashed with ISIS fighters in the Sabaa Bahrat district of Manbij city, north of Aleppo. ISIS has reportedly retreated from the district after suffering heavy losses in manpower and equipment.

The ISIS security chief Safi Yahya Rajab was also killed in Monday’s clashes.

“Our forces advanced into the Hazawna neighbourhood of Manbij and attacked a major security centre for the terror group. Yahiya was among those killed in the Hazawna operation,” a spokesman for the SDF told ARA News in Manbij.

“After the clashes, we seized control of the Sabaa Bahrat and Hazawna districts, and we collected more than 25 dead bodies of ISIS militants, including that of Yahiya, who was known as the security chief of ISIS in Manbij,” the official said.
