Obama Calls for Ceasefire in Sudan
[An Nahar] President Barack B.O. Obama is calling on Sudan's warring factions to end the bloody violence threatening a peace agreement as the south gears up for independence due in three weeks.

"There is no military solution," Obama said in an audio message recorded late Tuesday for the U.S.-funded Voice of America (VOA) broadcasting network.

"The leaders of Sudan and South Sudan must live up to their responsibilities.

"The government of Sudan must prevent a further escalation of this crisis by ceasing its military actions immediately, including aerial bombardments, forced displacements and campaigns of intimidation," the U.S. leader said.

His appeal for a ceasefire, taped after returning to the U.S. mainland from a visit to Puerto Rico, came amid a surge of violence that saw more than 1,500 people killed in south Sudan since a largely peaceful independence referendum in January, according to U.N. and official figures.

Clashes in south Sudan have killed almost 100 people in separate cattle raids and rebel attacks in the past week, officials said Wednesday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or sporadic fighting...
has flared up across South Kordofan state on the south Sudan border since June 5 between the northern Sudanese Armed Forces and allied forces of Evil against fighters aligned to southern former rebel group the Sudan People's Liberation Army.

Obama called on both sides to end violence, allow aid workers to move relief supplies freely, and to fulfill their commitments under the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended a 21-year civil war and "resolve their differences peacefully."

"Today, I want to speak directly to Sudanese leaders: you must know that if you fulfill your obligations and choose peace, the United States will take the steps we have pledged toward normal relations," he continued.

"However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
those who flout their international obligations will face more pressure and isolation, and they will be held accountable for their actions."

The Khartoum government in the north is keen to score normalization, including being removed from a U.S. list of state sponsors of terror.

"The Sudanese people have come too far, and sacrificed too much, to see their dreams of a better future slip from their grasp," Obama said.

"Now is the time for Sudanese leaders to show the courage and vision that true leadership demands. Now is the time for Sudanese leaders, north and south, to choose peace."

The south is due to proclaim full independence on July 9, under a peace deal after decades of conflict with the north, but the fighting threatens to overshadow the historic event, particularly if the southern army is drawn in.

#1  These things get longer and longer everyday. More seizures but still a growing supply? Seizures making a dent in supply (unlikely)? Just more publicity about a still-insignificant amount of enforcement? Or (most likely) more research by badanov?

#2  The Buzzkill Bulletin is a new Rantburg feature meant to highlight the mundane work Mexican Army, Marines and Policia Federal are doing in the war on drugs.

Bad guys get all the news when they kill large number of people, so relaying information imparted by Mexican federal officials about their efforts is intended to counterbalance that out.

Nation of Islam’s Farrakhan defends Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi, blasts NATO ‘coalition of demons’
Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan on Wednesday lambasted the U.N., the U.S., and the "coalition of demons” that he said makes up NATO, accusing them of trying to assassinate Moammar Gadhafi and promote regime change in Libya.

Farrakhan said the United Nations and its 15-member Security Council, who he referred to as "the terror council,” have no legitimate right to exist for passing the resolution that has allowed NATO to take military action in Libya.

The Chicago-based Muslim clergyman, addressing a news conference a block from the U.N., defended his "brother leader Gadhafi” and praised his leadership of the North African country for more than four decades.

Farrakhan also encouraged Gadhafi to resist pressure for him to step aside.

"What has Moammar Gadhafi done to deserve what this united coalition of demons is putting on him?” Farrakhan said to murmurs of approval from his supporters. "They say he has lost the moral right (to rule) because he has killed his own people. But you have never proved that charge. Check the record.”

It would appear that killing Muslims is OK provided:
a) they are the wrong sort of Muslim
b) Muslims are the ones doing the whacking

Hey, maybe we could get our drones to be declared halal and put an end to all that whining! Is there any reason an AI could not convert to Islam? Setting an interrupt timer for daily prayers would be easy-peasy.

India-Pakistan
Terror leader lives freely near Pakistani capital
On the outskirts of the Pakistani capital lives a militant considered so powerful that Osama bin Laden consulted with him before issuing a fatwa to attack American interests.

Fazle-ur-Rahman Khalil heads Harakat-ul-Mujahedeen, a terrorist group closely aligned with al-Qa'ida and a signatory to bin Laden's anti-US fatwa in 1998. Khalil has also dispatched fighters to India, Afghanistan, Somalia, Chechnya and Bosnia, was a confidante of bin Laden and hung out with 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Pakistani authorities are clearly aware of Khalil's whereabouts. But they leave him alone, just as they tolerate other Kashmiri militant groups nurtured by the military and its intelligence agency to use against India.

Khalil is also useful to the authorities because of his unusually wide contacts among Pakistan's many militant groups, said a senior government official who is familiar with the security agencies and who spoke on condition he not be identified fearing repercussions.

Khalil's presence in an Islamabad suburb, confirmed to The Associated Press by Western officials in the region, underscores accusations that Pakistan is still playing a double game -- fighting some militant groups while tolerating or supporting others -- even after the solo US raid that killed bin Laden on May 2.

The US Congress, enraged that bin Laden found refuge for at least five years down the street from Pakistan's equivalent of West Point Military Academy, has threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in aid being spent here.

Pakistan army denies major's arrest for CIA links
[Dawn] The Mighty Pak Army denied Wednesday that one of its majors was among a group of Paks who Western officials say were set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock for feeding the CIA information before the American raid that killed the late Osama bin Laden.
... who is now neither a strong horse nor a weak horse, but a dead horse...

The New York Times,
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
which first reported the arrests of five Pak informants Tuesday, said an army major was jugged who copied license plates of cars visiting the al-Qaeda chief's compound in Pakistain in the weeks before the raid.

A Western official in Pakistain confirmed that five Paks who fed information to the CIA before the May 2 operation were set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock by Pakistain's top intelligence service.

But Mighty Pak Army front man Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas
... who is the very model of a modern major general...
denied an army major was set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock, saying the report was "false and totally baseless." Neither the army nor Pakistain's spy agency would confirm or deny the overall report about the detentions.

The group of jugged Paks included the owner of a safe house rented to the CIA to observe bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, an army town not far from the Pak capital of Islamabad, a US official said. The owner was jugged along with a "handful" of other Paks, said the official.

The Western officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters.

The fate of the purported CIA informants who were set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock was unclear, but American officials told the Times that CIA Director Leon Panetta raised the issue when he visited Islamabad last week to meet with Pak military and intelligence officers.

US-Pak relations have been strained over the raid by Navy SEALs on Pak territory, which embarrassed Pakistain's military, and other issues.

Seminary student assaulted, killed
[Dawn] The body of an Afghan student of a seminary was found in village Gehr Khan here on Tuesday. Police said that the teenager was also sexually assaulted before being killed.

Razi Mohammad Khan, an Afghan national living in a rented house at village Chohar, told police that his son Abdul Khaliq, 13, left house for seminary on Monday but did not return.

He said that he was informed in the evening that the body of his son was lying in the mortuary of Women and Children Hospital. He, however, did not nominate anyone in the FIR and said that he had no enmity.

Police said that condition of the body suggested that victim was buggered before being strangled to death.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
a man was kidnapped from a village of Ghazi tehsil on Monday evening. Family sources said that Sadaqat Ali of village Triman was standing outside his house when some unidentified persons disembarked from a motorcar, bearing number plate of Islamabad police, and forcibly took him away with them.
"Into the motorcar wit' yez, Sadaqat!"
Akhtar Nawaz, a parental uncle of the victim, said that kidnappers had informed them that Sadaqat Ali was in their captivity. The kidnappers demanded Rs20 million for his release, he added.
"Hello? Hello? Is dis Sadaqat Ali's fambly?... Lissen! Dis is da cops! We got Sadaqat! Yez wanna see him alive again, leave 20 million rupees in small bills under da beobab tree down by da crossroads!..."
The kidnappers also threatened to kill him if their demand was not met.
"Udderwise it's curtains for Sadaqat!"

Families of Frenchmen killed in Pakistan attack sue judge
[Dawn] Relatives of Frenchies killed in a 2002 bombing in Pakistain are suing a judge who probed the case, their lawyer said Wednesday, alleging it was falsely framed as a suicide kaboom.
"Yeah! It wuz somethin' else!"
They lodged a complaint alleging that the judge, Jean-Louis Bruguiere, had ignored an autopsy on the suspected bomber which they say cast doubt on claims that he drove a vehicle packed with explosives, said the lawyer, Olivier Morice.

"All these years, real disinformation has been orchestrated in order to make people believe that this attack was carried out as a suicide kaboom," he said.

The ongoing probe, now under the supervision of a different judge, centres on allegations that the attack was Dire Revenge™ for the cancellation of kickbacks promised to officials involved in the sale of French submarines to Pakistain.

The bombing in Bloody Karachi in 2002 killed 11 French engineers working for the French state company that built the submarines and at least three Paks.

The complex case has implicated President Nicolas Sarkozy,
...23rd and current President of the French Republic and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra. Sarkozy is married to singer-songwriter Carla Bruni, who has a really nice birthday suit...
who was budget minister at the time. He has denied any involvement.

The victims' families have accused officials of trying to bury the affair.

Their latest suit accuses Bruguiere, who led the French judicial investigation into the bombing from 2002 to 2007, of false testimony and obstructing justice.

They have already brought a manslaughter suit against former president Jacques Chirac, former prime minister Dominique de Villepin
... who may not be a woman ...
and executives involved in the arms deals, and have called for Sarkozy to be questioned.

Judges have also been investigating whether money paid in commissions ended up being channelled to fund political activities in La Belle France. Witnesses have told Sherlocks Sarkozy approved the commissions as budget minister at the time.

Sarkozy has dismissed the claims as a "fairytale."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
March 14 Vows to Salvage Lebanon from 'Syria-Hizbullah Cabinet' Dangers
[An Nahar] The March 14
Those are the good guys, insofar as Leb has good guys...
forces vowed on Wednesday to confront alleged attempts by the new Lebanese cabinet to take Leb back to the era of Syrian hegemony and integrate the country's institutions into Hizbullah's statelet.

The general-secretariat of the coalition said after its weekly meeting that it would prevent Premier Najib Miqati's government to "return Leb to the dark stage that the Cedar Revolution liberated" after ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's liquidation in February 2005.

The statement accused the Syrian regime of forming the new cabinet the same way it toppled former Premier Saad Hariri's
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's liquidation. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
government via Hizbullah which according to March 14 would control the state and take the Lebanese as hostages.

"The Syrian-Hizbullah cabinet is endangering Leb given that it would implement policies that contradict legitimate international resolutions, either through its rejection to scrap illegitimate arms as called by (Security Council) resolution 1701 or through its coup against the international tribunal," said the statement read by the general-secretariat coordinator Fares Soaid.

In its position as the country's opposition, the alliance vowed to defend the state and its military, security, educational, economic and social institutions against the Hizbullah mini-state.

It also promised its supporters to prevent the country from being part of the Iranian project in the Arab world in the hopes that Leb would join back the Arab Spring that kicked off in Beirut six years ago.

Hizbullah: Equation of People, Army, Resistance is Foundation for Defense Strategy
[An Nahar] The Loyalty to the Resistance
That'd be the Hezbullies, natch...
bloc praised on Wednesday Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri's
Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, a member of AMAL, a not very subtle Hizbullah sock puppet...
"bold national stand" that helped establish a new government.

It said in a statement after a meeting headed by MP Mohammed Raad: "With the formation of a new government, the country has entered a new phase rife with challenges that require different policies that would be able to revitalize all state institutions and fields."

"A serious national approach is the only way to end obstacles," it stressed.

"Leb will remain a nation of diversity, unity, and freedom," it added.

"It will continue on confronting Israeli aggression and the equation of the people, army, and resistance will serve as the foundation for a national defense strategy," the bloc stated.

Shortly before the announcement of the new government lineup, Berri agreed to sacrifice the representation of a Shiite minister in favor of a Sunni one.

Al-Qaeda appoints new Osama bin Laden: Ayman al-Zawahiri chosen to lead terrorist organisation
Al-Qaeda has chosen Ayman al-Zawahiri as its new leader following Osama bin Laden's death in a US commando raid last month, according to a statement apparently issued by the movement’s general command.

The Egyptian surgeon was al-Qaeda’s number two for more than a decade and was widely expected to take on the top role when bin Laden was shot dead by US Navy Seals in Pakistan.

“The general command of al-Qaeda announces, after consultations, the appointment of Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri as head of the group,” said the statement which was posted on an Islamist website.

A group statement later said: "We seek with the aid of God to call for the religion of truth and incite our nation to fight ... by carrying out jihad against the apostate invaders ... with their head being crusader America and its servant Israel, and whoever supports them."

Al-Zawahiri, 59, issued a eulogy for bin Laden last week saying al-Qaeda’s leader had terrified the US when he was alive and would continue to do so in death.

He appeared in a white Arab robe and turban, a Kalashnikov at his side, in the 28-minute video posted on jihadist online foru
