Parkland massacre investigation reveals failure of cops and school administrators
[NYPOST] The teenage gunman responsible for the Florida high school massacre that left 17 dead had nearly free reign during the early stages of the carnage because cops and administrators failed to take key steps that could have saved lives, it was reported Friday.

An investigation by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel included horrifying pictures of 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz roaming the first-floor hallways of Parkland’s Majory Stoneman Douglas High School as he shot his former classmates, seemingly at will, in the February bloodbath.

The paper said school administrators and law enforcement officials could have headed off the shooting in its earliest minutes and saved lives ‐ but failed to do so.

"Security monitor Andrew Medina, an unarmed baseball coach, is riding in a golf cart and unlocking gates 20 minutes before dismissal. He sees Cruz walk through one of those unguarded gates with a rifle bag," the paper reported.

"He recognizes Cruz as ’Crazy Boy,’ the former student that he and his colleagues had predicted most likely to shoot up the school. He radios another campus monitor/coach, but he does not pursue Cruz and does not call a Code Red to lock down the school."

Medina never should have been on the job in the first place, according to the report.

"School Sherlocks had recommended he be fired for sexually harassing students, but district administrators overruled them," the paper wrote.

Its investigative team found that Medina was the first of three school employees who failed to call for a lockdown "after learning a gunman is on campus."

Instead, Medina alerted at least one other staffer ‐ David Taylor, who spotted the gunman lumbering down the hall with his rifle bag in hand.

Security camera footage showed that Taylor turned the other way, later telling Sherlocks he attempted to use the stairs at the other end of the hallway to cut Cruz off on the second floor.

On the videotapes obtained by the paper, Cruz is seen walking into a stairwell where just seconds later an unsuspecting freshman, Chris McKenna, entered to see the 19-year-old killer loading his gun.

"You’d better get out of here," Cruz said. "Things are gonna start getting messy."

McKenna ran and told football coach Aaron Feis that there was someone in the school with a gun. The newspaper found there was no evidence that Feis used his radio to call for a "code red" lockdown ‐ the second missed chance.

With his weapon out, Cruz left the stairwell and fired his first shots ‐ killing three freshmen in a first-floor hallway.

Taylor heard the shots and raced up to the second floor, where he ducked into a janitor’s closet, the report said.

He had a radio, but didn’t call for a lockdown ‐ a third missed chance to limit the carnage, the Sun-Sentinel found.

Another 14 students and staff would die in the hour-long rampage ‐ many after a fire alarm sent them scrambling into hallways and right into the gunman’s path.

California TV anchor dies from suspected overdose in motel room
[Washington Examiner] A Los Angeles TV reporter and anchor's death is being treated as a possible drug overdose.

Chris Burrous, 43, a popular KTLA Morning News journalist and weekend host, was found unresponsive on Thursday at a Days Inn in Glendale, Calif. Authorities headed to the motel after a man Burrous was with reported that he had passed out and was possibly not breathing due to an overdose, Glendale Police Sgt. Dan Suttles said at a press conference.

KTLA reported that firefighters first on the scene arrived to find Burrous' male companion, whom Suttles described as "a friend," trying to save him. The man "quite honestly did a good job of trying to render aid," according to Suttles. Paramedics then took Burrous, who had been with the channel since 2011, to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There was no indication that Burrous' death was a suicide, Suttles said.

"Detectives will be awaiting the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office report for a determination of the cause of death and to assist in bringing the investigation to a conclusion," Suttles wrote in a press release.

FloraCraft owner 82 year old Lee Schoenherr hands out Christmas bonuses
[People] Nearly 200 employees of a family-owned company received an early Christmas surprise when they found out what their Christmas bonuses would be this year!

On December 14, Lee Schoenherr ‐ owner of FloraCraft, a Michigan-based company that produces foam goods used for crafting and floral projects ‐ told his 200 full-time employees that they would all be sharing a $4 million dollar year-end bonus.

"I believe strongly in giving back to the community by supporting initiatives that make Ludington a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family," Schoenherr, 82, said in a statement on the FloraCraft website. "A few years ago, I began thinking that I would like to do something more targeted for our employees, who really are the heart and soul of FloraCraft."

As ABC 13 notes, past bonuses at the company have included ham and gift cards, so this one is sure to take the cake!

Father and Twin Sons Cut Enough Firewood to Fill 80 Trucks ‐ and Deliver It to Families in Need!
[People] When 47-year-old Shane McDaniel, of Lake Stevens, Washington, began cutting firewood back in March, he never imagined his efforts would mark the beginning of a months-long good deed.

"The Pacific Northwest is a pretty rugged area, it’s cold and wet. Once I started, I saw the need and my eyes were opened up," McDaniel tells PEOPLE. "So many people were stopping and asking to buy it and we just started giving it away."

McDaniel initially began chopping the wood as a way to feel connected to his late father, with whom he often cut wood as a kid. He carried on the tradition with his twin sons, Henry and Harrison, both 21.

As the wood began piling up around their home over the months, McDaniel decided to put it to good use. The trio decided to give the wood away to families in need of heat.

Alcohol and coffee can help you live past 90, study says
[DetroitFreePress] Researchers found that those who drink moderate amounts of beer or wine, along with two cups of coffee, increase their chances to live a long life

Readers, we are honored and privileged to bring you the single greatest piece of news you've heard in your entire life.

A study out of the University of California-Irvine has revealed that consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol and coffee is linked to living a longer life.

Re-read that last sentence. There are no typos. There are no jokes.

The key word is "moderate," of course. The study, called "The 90+ Study," started in 2003 and examined "the oldest-old" age group ‐ about 1,700 nonagenarians ‐ to determine what is key to living to your 90th birthday and beyond.

The study has found, among other things, that people "who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained," and that "people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people did."

"I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity," Dr. Claudia Kawas, a key researcher for the study, recently said at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Austin, according to the Independent.

The research found that subjects who drank two glasses of beer or wine every day decreased their chances at a premature death by 18%, and those who drank two cups of coffee a day decreased their chances by 10%.

But don't go planning your happy hours just yet ‐ you should still exercise! This same research found regular exercise ‐ as well as keeping busy with a regular hobby ‐ is also key to living a longer life.

So there you have it. Next time someone gives you grief about another trip to the coffee stand or unwinding after work with that nice glass of beer, tell them you just want to live a long, beautiful life.

China's African debt-trap: Beijing prepares to seize Kenya's port of Mombasa
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) ‐ China may be preparing to seize some major assets in the African nation of Kenya, as a result of debt-trap diplomacy.

African media reports that Kenya may soon be forced to relinquish control of its largest and most lucrative port in Mombasa to Chinese control.

Other assets related to the inland shipment of goods from the port, including the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi, and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), may also be compromised in the event of a Chinese port takeover.

Kenya has reportedly taken extremely large loans from the Communist government for the development of some major highways, and especially for the SGR, which forms a crucial transport link to and from Nairobi for the import and export of goods through Mombasa.

In November, Moody’s noted that Kenya is at high risk of losing strategic assets because of debts owed to Beijing.

Europe
Der Spiegel star reporter Claas Relotius fabricated stories for years
[NYPOST] The German weekly Der Spiegel, one of the top-selling publications in Europe, is reeling from a scandal that revealed that a star news hound has reportedly faked stories for years.

Many of the faked stories written by Claas Relotius were centered in the United States or in the Middle East.

So far, Der Spiegel editors said Wednesday, they had found that Relotius "made up stories and invented protagonists" in at least 14 of the 60 stories examined so far. But they said the investigation is only beginning. The editors said they were "astounded and sad" by the discovery, which they called "a low point in Der Spiegel’s 70-year history."

#10  Since I don't often read Der Spiegel, I didn't even know his name. The Spiegel (leftist) has an annoying habit of embellishing stories, which always had me suspicious. They have been doing this for decades.

The stories of Relotius fit the "narrative", that's why he got so many trophys. Now everyone is shocked like Capitaine Renaud.

But he's hardly the only offender. I'll stick to FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung,) and NZZ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), both conservative/classical liberal.

If you skip politics, the weekly Die Zeit has some good stories, too. The SZ (Süddeutsche) is moderately left, but still readable.

Die Welt (conservative) is surprisingly good, too, given the fact that it comes from the same publisher who publishes BILD (biggest tabloid).

Yellow Vest protestors try to storm island fort 'where French President Emmanuel Macron spending Xmas holidays'
[DailyMail] Around 50 members of the anti-government movement arrived at the medieval fort of Bregancon, on the Riviera coast near Toulon on Thursday, and remained close by on Friday.

They shouted 'Macron Resign' as they tried to get into the heavily armoured building, where they claim Mr Macron, 41, is enjoying a vacation with his wife, Brigitte Macron. 65.

The Yellow Vests - who are named after their trademark high visibility jackets - managed to pose for pictures close to Bregancon, but were then kept away by armed police and gendarmes.

Bregancon became a symbol of anti-government protest in the summer, after Mr Macron installed a swimming pool there for his family members who did not want to use the sea to bathe.

But the Yellow Vests said their protests would continue indefinitely as they campaign for even more concessions.
The pool cost more than £30,000, with Mr Macron saying the cost was justified because he and Brigitte did not like to be pictured in their beachwear by the paparazzi.

Today presidential sources would not say whether the Macrons were in residence at Bregancon, which is one of at least 10 presidential properties available to them all year round.

But they confirmed that they had cancelled a ski trip to La Mongie, in the Pyrenees, which Mr Macron used to visit as a child.

Thousands of Yellow Vests have been incarcerated
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
across La Belle France over the past two months as they campaign for Mr Macron to resign.

They started off as group protesting against fuel price rises caused by ecological taxes.

Last Saturday there were almost 150 arrests for public order offences during Vest protests in Gay Paree alone, while at the end of November some 700 were held in jug on a single day.

Mounted police, water cannons, and 14 armoured vehicles capable of spreading high-intensity tear gas have been used against them constantly in the French capital, where they vandalised public monuments including the Arc de Triomphe.

The Vests have been joined by bandidos bully boyz from the far Right and the ultra-Left, as well as anarchists intent on causing as much damage as possible.

Crisis-ridden Mr Macron has not only climbed down on imposing green surcharges on petrol and diesel, but increased the national minimum wage by seven per sent, and scrapped tax on bonuses.

But the Yellow Vests said their protests would continue indefinitely as they campaign for even more concessions.

The independent Mr Macron, leader of the Republic On The Move party, won the French presidential election in a landslide in 2017, but he is now dubbed the 'President of the Rich' with polls showing his popularity rating down to just 18 per cent.

French 'Yellow Vest' Protests Planned for Saturday, New Year's Eve

[AnNahar] The "yellow vest" anti-government protests that have rocked France will be held on Saturday and New Year's Eve, and continue into 2019, several sources in the movement said Thursday.

"The yellow vests are still mobilized," said Laetitia Dewalle, one spokeswoman of the protest movement which does not have a traditional leadership structure.

Several of the movement's representatives said a seventh straight Saturday of protests will take place across the country this weekend.

Yellow-vest representative Benjamin Cauchy said protesters would be out on New Year's Eve as well, "to show that the mobilization will not end in the new year."

Cauchy also warned that if the concessions made so far by President Emmanuel Macron did not add up, "we will end up with a large-scale mobilisation in late January."

Earlier on Thursday, Paris city officials said that New Year's Eve celebrations on the Champs-Elysees will go ahead despite the protest plans on the famed avenue. Tens of thousands of tourists and locals traditionally ring in the new year on the wide shopping boulevard, which ends with the Arc de Triomphe monument.

Nine-year-old girl found murdered after being raped, tortured in Nowshera
[DAWN] The tortured body of a minor girl who had gone missing a day earlier was found in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's Nowshera district on Friday.

A post-mortem examination performed on the nine-year-old child's body suggested she was raped before being murdered, District Police Officer Nowshera Mansoor Aman said.

According to police, the girl was reported missing at 10pm on Thursday after she did not return home from a madressah where she was receiving Koranic lessons.

Her body, bearing signs of torture, was found on Friday morning from a graveyard near her house. It was then shifted to a hospital, where a postmortem examination suggested rape and murder.

A first information report has been lodged and a joint investigation team has been constituted to ascertain the facts of the child's death and to trace the culprits, DPO Aman told DawnNewsTV.

EPA Set To Run Out Of Money As Government Shutdown Drags On
[Huffpoo] The Environmental Protection Agency had run on spare funding after the shutdown began. Now there are plans to furlough workers and prioritize high-risk projects.

The Environmental Protection Agency is set to run out of money one week after President Donald Trump refused to sign a spending bill because it lacked $5 billion in funding for his proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall, prompting a partial government shutdown.

Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler told federal employees in a Thursday email that the agency would begin shutdown procedures, including steps for furloughed employees, if negotiations over the spending bill remained at a standstill by the end of Friday.

Trump Imposes Pay Freeze on Civilian Feds for 2019
[Government Executive] After months of speculation, President Trump followed through on a March proposal and instituted a pay freeze for federal civilian employees.

In an executive order issued Friday, Trump confirmed that pay rates would remain stagnant next year for non-military federal workers. The news comes despite statements from the president in September that he would “study” whether to provide feds with a pay raise after all.

By contrast, members of the military services will receive a 2.6 percent raise in 2019.
