Tomorrow's Super Bowl Halftime Show Will Suck. Very Badly.
[Deadspin / Dan Shaughnessy Watch] You know what's really gonna make you lose interest immediately? Tomorrow night's Super Bowl halftime show! I tried my best not to ape Shank and go all 'get off my lawn' on the guy, but I despise Justin Timberlake. This fucking no-talent boy band hack is famous for one thing, and that's his part in the 2004 'Nipplegate' Super Bowl halftime show with Janet Jackson, sporting one small breast (big whoop), and the NFL is chump enough to let him embarrass them a second time. He embodies just about everything that's wrong with today's music industry - bland, corporate, bereft of skill. The Social Network was among one of the worst movies ever made, right down there with Ishtar. And you know what's gonna make it all complete clusterfuck / world-class dumpster fire of biblical proportions? He's going on stage and doing one of his 'songs'... with a hologram of Prince, who's been dead for over a year. When you suck as bad as Timberlake, you need to pull out all the stops to ruin a sporting event as best you can. The really ironic part of this? When he was alive, it was reported that Prince cannot stand Timberlake, most likely because the latter is a no-talent hack.

This is going to be by far and away the absolute worst, shit on the bottom of your shoes halftime show in history. It's gonna suck big, hairy donkey balls in the worst way possible. If I wasn't doing my normal halftime duties (dishwashing at a friend's house), I'd be throwing knives & dishes at the TV set. I can't wait to watch this asshole's career evaporate on that stage tomorrow.

Why I Am Leaving the F.B.I.
NY Slimes - The Opposition
One of the greatest honors of my life was walking across the stage at the F.B.I. Academy and receiving my special agent badge from the director at the time, Robert Mueller. After 21 weeks of intensive training, my class swore an oath and became federal agents entrusted with the solemn duty of protecting Americans and upholding the Constitution.

After more than a decade of service, which included investigating terrorism, working to rescue kidnapping victims overseas and being special assistant to the director, I am reluctantly turning in my badge and leaving an organization I love. Why? So I can join the growing chorus of people who believe that the relentless attacks on the bureau undermine not just America's premier law enforcement agency but also the nation's security. My resignation is painful, but the alternative of remaining quiet while the bureau is tarnished for political gain is impossible.
10 Years? You've barely begun the political corruption ladder. At 10 years you don't even understand the politics dictating priorities and outcomes
A small number of my current and retired colleagues have said that we should simply keep our heads down until the storm passes. I say this with the greatest respect: They are wrong. If those who know the agency best remain silent, it will be defined by those with partisan agendas.
Like FBI Management
F.B.I. agents are dogged people who do not care about the direction of political winds. But to succeed in their work, they need public backing. Scorched-earth attacks from politicians with partisan goals now threaten that support, raising corrosive doubts about the integrity of the F.B.I. that could last for generations.

I imagine all of this is degrading and depressing for the ranks who have principles and dreams. Their anger and disappointment should be leveled at their political Management

#6  This reads like the sanctimonious ass-covering of someone bailing out before he is swept up in the coming storm. But Brutus is an honorable man, right?

But every statement of fact included in an affidavit for foreign intelligence collection must withstand the scrutiny of at least 10 people in the Department of Justice hierarchy before it is reviewed by an independent court.

A bit of a tautology there, my friend. And not at all a convincing argument.

to succeed in their work, they need public backing.

True. Pity your co-workers didn't worry about that before they decided it was their duty to affect the election. Of course, if Hillary had won as planned, everything would have been swept under the rug and no one would be the wiser.

In my mind, the worst part of the Obama years wasn't the steady stream of Obama-nonsense, but the fact that American institutions once regarded as impartial, institutions like the IRS, the FBI and the DoJ, were subverted for political ends and have lost the trust of half the population. Hell of a way to run a country.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Years Of U.S. Government Lies Could Soon Result In A Kurdish Massacre
[Huffpoo] WASHINGTON ― The Trump administration is doubling down on a lie the U.S. government has promoted since it first began cooperating with the Syrian Kurds against the Islamic State group in 2014: that the Kurds it is working with in Syria differ from those that are anathema to NATO ally Turkey.

American officials designed that fiction to enable the anti-ISIS strategy adopted under President Barack Obama and continued under President Donald Trump. Now it’s taking its most serious toll yet: Turkey is bombarding Afrin, a Kurdish enclave in northwest Syria, with airstrikes and artillery fire and the U.S. is refusing responsibility. Extending the Obama-era logic, team Trump maintains that Afrin is totally distinct from the Kurdish regions in Syria’s northeast that are home to American bases and thousands of U.S. troops.

Dozens of civilians have died in the campaign’s initial assault on smaller villages around the main city. Over a million more are at risk, as are Turkish civilians facing rockets in response. And Trump’s choice has boosted bitterness toward the U.S. among Washington’s most effective partners in Syria. In the weeks ahead, it could torpedo U.S.-brokered cooperation between Kurds and the country’s majority Arab community, tempting more Arabs to join radical groups like the powerful local al Qaeda affiliate or what’s left of ISIS; escalate an already dire humanitarian crisis; and cede more space in Syria to actors Trump is ostensibly committed to challenging ― Russia, Iran and the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. There’s little clear benefit to the U.S. in return.

Squaring U.S. policy in Syria with the country’s increasingly assertive neighbor Turkey is a goal that’s eluded Washington for years. Since the Obama era, the U.S. campaign against ISIS has relied on a Kurdish militia in northern Syria called the People’s Protection Units, or YPG. Turkey views that group as inseparable from an internationally blacklisted Kurdish separatist movement called the PKK that it has fought for years. The Obama administration’s solution was to speak of a difference between the two forces as often as it could.

That position fails to account for the two groups’ mutual history, leftist ideology and recruiting pools, but it’s one the Kurds can live with. Their respective officials say they sympathize for fellow Kurds across the countries they live in (Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran) but have distinct command-and-control structures. And to further assuage Turkey and Syria’s Arabs, the YPG subsumed its fighters under a larger anti-ISIS battalion without an explicit Kurdish flavor ― a two-year-old construct called the Syrian Democratic Forces, which includes thousands of Arabs and Assyrians.

#1  The YPG has been referred to as Communists. There are two definitions of Communism and the YPG fits the rare definition. They are not of the tyrannical authoritarian definition, but that as a community under the rule of other governments they use a non property ownership, every thing is shared if necessary style of society in order to survive.

#2  There were no lies. The Kurds thought there was an implicit understanding. No such understanding existed. We kept them alive with copious equipment, training and on-call air strikes. They fought ISIS, which they would have had to do anyway to avoid ending up dead or in exile.

Who got the better end of the bargain? Who knows? But the reality is that it was a war of choice for us and a war of survival for them. We helped them survive. We owe the Kurds nothing. The way they're posturing these days, they certainly seem to think they owe us nothing. And that's OK. As long as we're clear that this is an alliance only for as long as we have mutual interests.

Always up for a good stomping of individuals in the State Interest™, Robert?
Posted by: Frank G || 02/03/2018 19:59 Comments || Top||

#4  Not our stomping. I'm no fan of the Donald's personally, although I find no moral issues* with his stand vis-a-vis the Kurds. It would be nice if Trump threw the Kurds a bone, but he's not required to, except perhaps for sentimental reasons. The very fact that they needed bailing out points to their economic, military and political incompetence. Note that Israel needed zero military help to turf the Arabs. They bought everything they needed on a cash-and-carry basis. Whereas the Kurds are a shambolic mess who need our help just to feed themselves.

Trump wants to keep the Turks on the inside pissing out rather than the other way around. Now, if he quietly warned the Turks to stay out of Syria, they would undoubtedly comply. Because we can crush the Turkish economy without touching their military. And I expect we could destroy enough of the Turkish military's hardware that its famously-insubordinate generals would garrote Erdogan in the traditional Ottoman way, but on live TV, just to get a reprieve. After all, they prostrated themselves before Putin after the loss of a single antique warplane.

* Is Trump's affability vis-a-vis Erdogan related to his licensing agreement for Trump Towers Istanbul? Nobody knows. But I expect him to avoid any direct military entanglements requiring significant manpower and financial commitment for the same reason that Obama did - it's a major expenditure of political capital that results in reduced poll ratings, and doesn't help with many of the purely-domestic policy initiatives that need to be kick-started. Trump doesn't need his numbers to go any lower.

What Gen. Flynn knew and why he was targeted - 13 Aug 2015 GR article.
[Global Research 13 August 2015] If one was only to read mainstream news in the West, you would probably be inculcated with the myth that Islamic State (ISIS) appeared almost out of thin air and many governments in the Western world have been completely shocked by the rise of this terror group. Perhaps you would correctly blame the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq as a major reason why such extreme groups gained power in the region, in addition to blaming certain governments for supposedly marginalizing Sunni’s.

But what most mainstream readers will be miserably ignorant of is the fact that one of the main opposition groups fighting the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria has been itself, a group that has been trained, funded, aided and armed by NATO countries in collusion with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel (to name a few). This reality has been completely omitted in numerous corporate media publications, once again demonstrating the inept and deceptive nature of mainstream news.

Some Western news outlets are still peddling the fallacy that the Obama administration misjudged the threat of , and was taken by surprise by the groups rise. Obama himself claimed in 2014 when responding to a question asking whether the US underestimated ISIS: "That their advance, their movement, over the last several months has been more rapid than the intelligence estimates and I think the expectations of policy makers both inside and outside of Iraq."

This narrative runs in stark contrast to a recently declassified US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) document from 2012 which was released by Judicial Watch after the watchdog group filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit. The DIA document warned:

ISI [the Islamic State of Iraq] could also declare an Islamic State through its union with other terrorist organisations in Iraq and Syria." (p.5)

In a recent interview with Mehdi HasMan of Al Jazeera, the former head of the DIA, Michael T. Flynn, reiterates that the Obama administration was warned about the potential of extreme groups gaining influence in the region but instead of halting the support for the Syrian opposition, the administration took the "wilful decision" to support the rebels anyway:

Flynn interview follows.

Committee Chair Issues Instructions, FBI To Be Charged With Contempt Of Congress
[Conservative Daily Post] Following the release of the bombshell FISA abuse memo, House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes is gearing up to revive his declaration to hold the FBI in contempt of Congress.

On Friday, the GOP memo was released detailing how former President Barack Obama’s administration abused their power to trigger the phony Russia investigation into President Donald Trump.

The memo details how a slew of top Obama bureaucrats used the discredited dossier, which was compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele for the left-wing firm Fusion GPS, to secure a warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to launch a surveillance campaign against Trump and his former campaign members.

The dossier was not only given nearly $10 million from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee, it was the main document used to secure the spy warrant that launched the Russia probe.

Prior to releasing the memo, Congress sought for almost a year to gain access these documents from the FBI and Justice Department, but they stonewalled and delayed because they knew it would expose major areas of concern with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

In Dec. 2017, Nunes had sent numerous subpoenas to the FBI requesting all information pertaining to why then top intelligence analyst Peter Strzok had been fired from Mueller’s investigation last summer.

Strzok, who remains employed at the FBI, fired by Mueller after an internal probe revealed he had been sending thousands of anti-Trump text messages to Lisa Page, a top lawyer at the FBI with whom he was having an affair.

Text messages between Strzok and Page, which were finally turned over to Congress last month, revealed the two rogue FBI agents discussed disturbing things ranging from an "insurance policy" to use against Trump, a "secret society" that met the day after Trump won the 2016 presidential election, to "removing classified information" from government cell phones.

16 Bombshells in the Nunes Memo the Media Do Not Want You to Know About
BLUF:
[Breitbart]

Here are 16 things the media do not want you to know about the Nunes memo:

1. The so-called Russian Dossier, the creation of Fusion GPS and former British spy Christopher Steele, is a political document ‐ namely, opposition research, created for the Democrat National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

2. Using what it knew was opposition research paid for by the Clinton campaign, in October of 2016, the FBI and DOJ obtained a FISA warrant from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to install a wiretap to spy on Hillary Clinton’s opponent ‐ the Trump campaign, specifically Carter Page. This spying would last for a year.

3. It should be noted that the FISA court was set up to stop foreign terrorists. The fact that the FBI and DOJ would use this court to not only wiretap an American but to wiretap a presidential campaign belies belief. Why Obama’s FBI and DOJ used this court as opposed to a normal court is obvious. As you will see below, a normal court probably would have denied the wiretap.

4. Worse still, in the summer of 2016, Obama’s DOJ had already opened a counter-intelligence investigation into the Trump campaign. The fact that nothing from that months-old partisan investigation was used to obtain the Page wiretap is revealing.

5. According to the Nunes memo, an "essential" part of the FISA wiretap application was the Steele dossier, which again is a partisan political document created for the Clinton campaign.

6. So essential was this partisan dossier, Andrew McCabe, the disgraced former-Deputy Director of the FBI, admitted in December that "no surveillance warrant would have been sought" without the dossier.

7. Not only did the FBI knowingly use a document from a partisan campaign to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on the competing campaign, the FBI knew the dossier was mostly "salacious and unverified." We know this because disgraced former-FBI Director James Comey told us so in June of 2017.

8. According to the Nunes memo, "Steele told [former FBI official Bruce] Ohr, he ’was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about him not being president.'"

9. Ohr, who was part of the FBI’s anti-Trump Russian investigation, was not only friendly with Steele, Ohr’s own wife worked with Steele at Fusion GPS doing opposition research (the dossier) against Trump for the Clinton campaign.

10. Despite a) knowing the dossier was opposition research paid for by the Clinton campaign b) knowing the dossier was "salacious and unverified" c) knowing Steele was desperate to destroy Trump d) the breathtaking conflict of interest in having an investigator’s own wife working on the dossier, the FBI still went to the FISA court to obtain permission to spy on Hillary Clinton’s opponent.

11. In order to obtain a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign, all of the conflicts of interest above were withheld from the FISA court ‐ an indefensible (and possibly illegal) lie of omission.

12. Even worse, in order to legitimize a warrant request based on a piece of partisan opposition research they knew was "salacious and unverified," the FBI and DOJ used a media report to bolster the findings in the phony dossier. The FBI and DOJ told the court that the media report was independent verification of the dossier. But this was not true, and, according to the Nunes memo, the FBI and DOJ knew this was not true. The truth is that the phony dossier was the source of this media report.

13. Also hidden from the FISA court was the fact that the FBI obtained Steele as a source but had to fire him in October of 2016 when, in a bid to use his phony dossier to derail the Trump campaign, he leaked his information to the far-left Mother Jones.

14. Although the FBI and DOJ were willing participants in pushing a "salacious and unverified" narrative against a presidential candidate (primarily through media leaks), this was all hidden from congressional investigators. To begin with, for months, while under oath, Comey said he did not know where the dossier came from ‐ meaning from the Clinton campaign. The Wall Street Journal explains:
We also know the FBI wasn’t straight with Congress, as it hid most of these facts from investigators in a briefing on the dossier in January 2017. The FBI did not tell Congress about Mr. Steele’s connection to the Clinton campaign, and the House had to issue subpoenas for Fusion bank records to discover the truth. Nor did the FBI tell investigators that it continued receiving information from Mr. Steele and Fusion even after it had terminated him. The memo says the bureau’s intermediary was Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, whose wife, incredibly, worked for Fusion.

15. All of this dishonesty occurred under Comey, the man our media now hold up as a living saint, a man so desperate to destroy Trump, he not only oversaw those committing the above abuses, he leaked classified information to the news media in order to see a Special Prosecutor appointed against Trump, which his pal, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, immediately did.
And finally...

16. Much of the "salacious and unverified" material in the dossier came from the Russians. In other words, those disgusting dossier lies about Trump’s personal behavior came from Russian operatives. So there is no question that it was the Clinton campaign, Democrats, Steele, the FBI, and DOJ who colluded with the Russians to rig a presidential election.

No, no question. And the Russians they were dealing with (and giving UDS $$$ to) were quite likely Russian intelligence operatives.

We see a lot of projection coming from the Democrats. Maybe that's because it's easy for them to make up stories about other people doing the things they've done themselves...they know all about how these things are done. That bit about Trump hiring prostitutes to pee on a bed where Baraq slept may have come from the Russians but who would ever even think of such a thing? Well, it sounds to me a helluva lot like something Bill Clinton would do.

The Grand Turk
Syrian Kurds outraged over mutilation of female fighter
[BBC]Turkish-backed rebels accused of filming mistreatment of Women’s Protection Units member

Syrian Kurds have accused Turkish-backed rebels of mutilating then filming the body of one of their female fighters after a video emerged of her corpse.

Turkey and allied Syrian rebels have pressed an offensive since 20 January against the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in northern Syria, whose Kurdish fighters Ankara views as terrorists.

A Kurdish official identified the woman as Barin Kobani, who took part in a US-backed campaign to drive the Islamic State jihadist group from the northern town of Kobani.
The Kurds blamed the “terrorist allies of the enemy Turkish state” for mutilating the body of Kobani, who was a member of the all-female Kurdish Women’s Protection Units.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group based in Britain, said it received the video from a Syrian rebel fighting with Turkish forces in the Afrin offensive.

The rebel told the group the footage was filmed on Tuesday after rebels found the young woman’s corpse in the village of Qurna near the Turkish border in the north of the enclave. In the footage, a dozen men, some armed, gather around the badly mutilated body of a woman lying on the ground.

The Kurdish community reacted with outrage, and social media users shared a portrait of Kobani smiling next to another shot of her brutalised body.

“Barin did not surrender. She fought to the death,” said Amad Kandal, an official with the Women’s Protection Units, vowing to avenge her comrade’s brutal murder. “This kind of behaviour will only serve to reinforce our determination to resist until victory.”

Male and female YPG fighters have taken part in the battle by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to expel Isis from large parts of Syria.

An SDF spokesman, Mustefa Bali, said the video was reason to continue fighting back against Turkey and its allies. “Imagine the savagery of these invaders with the bodies of our daughters. How would they behave if they took control of our neighbourhoods?” he wrote on Facebook. “All this hatred and barbarity leaves us with a single option: to continue the resistance.”

An Afrin resident Hussein Cheikho, 65, said he was “deeply pained” when he saw pictures of Kobani’s mutilated body but said her death would not be in vain. “The death of a young man or a young woman will not weaken us. Out strength will be bolstered every day,” he said.

The Syrian National Council, the main opposition body in exile, condemned the “criminal acts” and called for “an immediate investigation to punish those responsible.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
A Russian Sukhoi 25 fighter jet has been shot down in a rebel-held area near Idlib
The pilot was said to have ejected before the crash and been captured, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.
Video posted on social media appeared to show the plane being hit, while other video showed burning wreckage on the ground, with a red star on a wing.
Russia has acted alongside its Syrian allies targeting rebels in the area.
The fate of the pilot has not yet been confirmed, nor which group shot his plane down or captured him.
Hardline rebel groups including the jihadist, al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are active in the north-western province.

What prompted this was the question of how General Flynn might have gotten trapped into a lying to the FBI charge. It is really quite easy according to the article. In interactions with the government, one should be very concerned and cautious by what interactions they might have with government agents.

Judge tosses suit against Trump over CFPB chief
Elizabeth Warren hardest hit
Score one for President Trump.

A Manhattan federal judge on Friday threw out of court a lawsuit that claimed Trump had no legal authority to appoint an interim head of a Wall Street watchdog.

The Lower East Side People's Credit Union had asked the court to block the White House's move to install Mick Mulvaney as the interim boss of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which monitors credit cards, loans, and other consumer financial products, because it violated the agency's rules.

But Judge Paul G. Gardephe, in a 20-page decision, said the credit union didn't have standing to challenge the appointment.
"Plaintiff's standing cannot be premised on the CFPB's stated intent to engage in rulemaking," Gardephe wrote.

The CFPB has been at the center of a political firestorm since November, when its former director resigned abruptly and appointed his chief of staff, Leandra English, to an interim director position.
too cute
That set up a challenge to the White House, which had appointed Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget who has been extremely critical of the agency.

The win is the second for Trump in his battle for control of the agency. A separate case challenging Mulvaney's appointment, filed in Washington, DC, was also dismissed. That case is on appeal.

Gunman opens fire on foreigners in Italian town
[ABC] A lone gunman opened fire on foreigners in drive-by shootings in a central Italian city, wounding an undisclosed number of people Saturday morning before being arrested, police said.

The suspect's motive wasn't immediately clear, but the city of Macerata is still reeling from the gruesome killing of a young Italian woman this week, allegedly at the hands of a Nigerian immigrant.

Police said all those wounded were foreigners and they later confirmed the arrest of the unidentified suspect about two hours after the shooting erupted in the city of Macerata.

Video posted by the newspaper il Resto di Carlino showed what appeared to be a body on the ground on a shopping street.

The shooting spree came days after the murder of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro and amid a heated electoral campaign in Italy where anti-foreigner sentiment has become a key theme. The head of the anti-migrant Northern League, Matteo Salvini, has capitalized on the killing in campaign appearances, and is pledging to deport 150,000 migrants in his first year in office if his party wins control of parliament and he is named premier.

The teen's dismembered remains were found Wednesday in two suitcases, two days after she walked away from a drug rehab community.

Police haven't said how many people have been wounded in Saturday's shootings. The news agency ANSA said two of the injured were black, and that witnesses reported that the car was seen in the area where the woman's body was found and also near where the suspect lived.

Police had warned people to stay inside while the shootings were ongoing. Authorities ordered public transport halted and that students be kept inside schools, which are open on Saturdays.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
US Combat Advisers in Vietnam Knew the Score and Got Ignored
[Daily Beast] While attending the Armed Forces Staff College in late 1964, just as the U.S. Army was gearing up to deploy its own combat forces to Vietnam, Col. Volney F. Warner attended a speech by the Marine commandant, Gen. Wallace Greene. Before he began his talk, Gen. Greene asked his audience of a hundred 100 majors and colonels a pointed question: "How many of you think that U.S. forces should be sent to fight in Vietnam and draw the line against communism there?"

Virtually everyone in the audience raised their hands enthusiastically. Then Greene, a decidedly hawkish member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, asked a second question: "How many think we should stay out of Vietnam?" Six officers raised their hands ... hesitantly. Warner was among them.

"There are a few cowards in every bunch," quipped the commandant.

But those six officers weren’t cowards. They were soldiers and Marines who had recently returned stateside from tours of duty as advisers to South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) combat units. They knew from firsthand experience what the senior leadership of the American armed forces did not: That the ARVN officer corps, like the government it served, was riven by nepotism, corruption, and indifferent to the plight of the peasantry it was supposed to protect. Moreover, the ARVN was fighting a decidedly unconventional, "people’s war" against small units of guerrillas with tactics and doctrine developed by the U.S. Army for conventional conflicts between regular armies. Not surprisingly, it was losing.

And finally, the advisers had come to understand, much to their dismay, that the top generals and admirals in Saigon and Washington clung tenaciously to this conventional way of war, despite paying lip service to the counterinsurgency training and doctrine that the war in Vietnam seemed to require. This, coupled with the fecklessness of the ARVN, did not bode well for American prospects in Southeast Asia.

In Vietnam, U.S. ground forces would be facing off against a superbly organized and highly motivated insurgency that enjoyed widespread support among South Vietnam’s 14 million peasants. The communist-led National Liberation Front in the South was largely an indigenous movement, but it was supplied with weapons and well-trained military and political warfare specialists from the People’s Army of Vietnam‐the formal name for the North Vietnamese regular army.

The more Warner and the best of his fellow advisers learned about the political and social forces that fueled the civil war in South, the more skeptical they became about the efficacy of using conventionally trained American combat forces to defeat the insurgency in the South. Part of the problem was cultural. The commanding generals in the early ’60s in Vietnam‐men such as John O’Daniel, Samuel T. Williams, Paul Harkins, and finally, William Westmoreland, had come of age as junior officers in World War II. To a man, they were deeply imbued with "victory disease" that blinded them to the extraordinary political and organizational strengths of their Vietnamese adversaries. Under no circumstances could they imagine how a largely guerrilla army with no air force or tanks could possibly defeat the ARVN, let alone the most technologically advanced army on the face of the planet.

#5  Heard through the grapevine a story about the Tet offensive, probably relevant here. A USA officer told me his intelligence unit got a pile of documents from a dead NVA officer. They were translated & seemed to have a detailed outline of a massive coordinated NVA operation coming up for the next Tet holiday in a week or so. He personally was concerned enough that he called senior commanders & got an appointment to bring this to Gen. Westmoreland's face to face, personal attention. Shortly after this, he presented his documents along with a short summary. Westermoreland glanced at the top, waved the back of his hand towards it, and dismissed the officer with, "They can't do this!"
He went back to near front lines with the sure knowledge of the exact hour the attack would start, and he learned they could do it.

#6  I'm not saying there weren't fuckups then.

If we discussed every fuckup we did in Ww2 in the same context at the time I guarantee you the outcome would have been a lot worse.

The US and the UK combined lost about 800,000 people in WW2. I guarantee you a lot of those deaths were due to stupidity and corruption.

The Soviets didn't lose ~ 12 million military dead and ~ 17 million civilian dead because Stalin was an Angelic Genius.

We can point this out without reaching the context that Naziism Was Right because we eventually won WW2. But we eventually gave up South Vietnam and every discussion, every history book has to justify that sale.

New Tea Party Attack Ad Targets … Rod Rosenstein?
[Hot Air] Something fun to cleanse the palate at the end of a long Memo Day and even longer Memo Week. This comes from Tea Party Patriots Action, an offshoot of a group founded two months after Obama was inaugurated in 2009 and dedicated at the time, as all tea party groups were, to smaller government, lower taxes, and individual liberty. Nine years later they’re running interference on a criminal investigation for the guy who’s in charge of the government ‐ and who’s never showed much interest in two of their three core goals ‐ by attacking the Justice Department for him. That trajectory, from then to now, is practically a right-wing version of "Animal Farm." In its departure from its core values, it reminds me of those NRA ads ranting about Antifa, the media, protesters, and assorted obnoxious left-wingers, with gun rights merely a minor theme. You can understand why the NRA would do that since, with Republicans in charge of government, there’s no threat from the feds at the moment to the group’s mission. Gun rights are safe for now so they’ve got to find something to keep NRA members active and donating. The Tea Party Patriots’ mission, though, has barely lost any salience since 2009. Trump has cut some regulations, sure, but federal spending, ballooning debt, and metastasizing entitlements are as much a concern as ever.

Skipping down.

Their next ad should target Peter Strzok, whose latest batch of texts with Lisa Page has been reviewed by the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal with no evidence of any conspiracy discovered. Strzok clearly doesn’t like Trump ("OMG I am so depressed," he texted Lisa Page after Trump’s victory) but he dislikes the Russians much more. Actual quote about our friends in Moscow: "F*cking conniving cheating savages. At statecraft, athletics, you name it." I’m going to get that crocheted on a pillow. When he’s right, he’s right.

Simplified view of the Obamagate memo scandal to share with friends
What's happening?
You know that Russia investigation that's been going on in Washington? Well, this is some of the stuff that they found when they went to go do that investigation. It's so shocking that Congress itself has spent months making an exception to the secrecy in order to let you in on what they found.

What did they find?
There is a large segment of the bureaucracy that hates our President and has weaponized the FBI and Department of Justice against him. They've worked there for longer than the President, and most of these people know each other. And they know how to press the right buttons and turn the right knobs to work the machine against their boss.

What do you mean, what did they find?
There's this guy Chris Steele, he's British, and he looooves Hillary Clinton. And he hates Trump. He's a friend of the FBI, he's a source for them and they pay him.

The Clinton campaign and the official Democrat party also pay him. They pay him to put together a mean story about Trump. That was the Pee Dossier.

Chris Steele passes that story to his friends in the FBI. His friends in the FBI know that it's fake. But it doesn't matter, they want to spy on Trump. So they make a Spy Application to the Secret Spy Court, "Can we spy on the Trump campaign?" The court says, "why would you spy on them?" The FBI needs an excuse to spy, so they use the Pee Dossier that Chris Steele passed them.

Just in case the court doesn't buy it, they include a Yahoo! News article where Chris Steele was the source who said the Pee Dossier was totally real.

FBI knew it was fake. They didn't tell the court. They knew Chris Steele hates Trump. They didn't tell the court. They knew Chris Steele was paid by Clinton campaign to make that story. They didn't tell the court.

The court grants the request, and lets the FBI spy on the Trump campaign.

Who are the FBI friends? Who's in on this?
Comey, McCabe, Yates, Rosenstein, Strzok, Ohr and more.

This isn't run of the mill stuff. That Spy Application has to be signed by the big fish. Your boss' boss' boss reads and signs this application, saying that it's true on their honor. What's the word for lying to the government?

They're all in this together. They all meet and talk and have the same opinions. That's why the memo also tells us that FBI Director McCabe and FBI Agent Strzok and FBI lawyer Page (Strzok's mistress) all met to talk about an "insurance policy" against Trump winning the election.

What happens to this Steele guy?
He's been referred for criminal prosecution. You can't do what he did. And he knew that. It was just a matter of not being caught long enough to take Trump out of office. Then FBI friends could get him out of trouble.

In fact, the FBI stopped being friends with him when they found out he broke the rules on talking to reporters and was a bad source.

But even after they fired him for being a bad source, they kept signing the Spy Application based on his stuff. A Spy Application has to be redone every 90 days. FBI friends signed it total FOUR times. FBI friends admitted under oath to Congress that they knew it was fake.

What did they find when they spied on Trump?
Nothing. Which is not what they wanted to find, so they kept using the original Spy Application to make more and more investigations, which is why we have a million investigations now. They all came from this.

Democrats Posture Against the Nunes Memo, Fail Miserably
[Victory Girls] A successful hashtag campaign has emerged: #ReleaseTheMemo! It actually worked! Congressman Devin Nunes, (R-CA) chair of the House Intelligence Committee, released a short Memo detailing information used to obtain a FISA warrant to surveil Carter Page, former advisor to the Trump campaign.

The Memo doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know, but it puts the abuses of the FISA process in black and white. The FBI and DOJ had knowledge of the sources the warrant application was based on, but did not fully disclose that information to the court. That’s called an omission of material fact. It is unethical, and depending on the warrant application requirements, possibly illegal.

But the Democrats have settled on a criticism of their own. They say Nunes himself has omitted important contextual information from the Memo, information that would explain why the FBI relied on the Steele dossier as a basis for the warrant when even Comey himself called it "salacious and unverified." They say that they are trying to release their own memo that will surely clear all this up. I’ll be very happy to take a look.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
And the incredibly fair and unbiased James Comey had this to say about the Nunes memo:
[Neo-Neo Con] "That’s it?" If the allegations seem like a nothingburger to you, Mr. Comey, then it’s only more reason to hope you never get near a government post again.

"Dishonest and misleading"‐Which parts, and what is your evidence for claiming they are dishonest?

"wrecked the House intel committee"‐in what way? Is it not still in operation? The vote was along predictable party lines, as so many things are these days.

"damaged relationship with the FISA court"‐how, and whose relationship? If anything might have "damaged" that relationship, it would have been the alleged actions themselves, if in fact the FISA court was not informed of the extremely pertinent information about the origins of the dossier.

"inexcusably exposed classified investigation of an American citizen"‐If the investigation was begun through the use of partisan opp research, not only do Americans have a right to know, but that fact also provides the "excuse" for this "inexcusable" exposure. What’s more, virtually all of the information contained in the dossier and released was already in the public domain, having been revealed by internal leaks to the MSM. I don’t recall Comey being so incensed at that.

In fact, I seem to recall that a leaker of other classified information was Comey himself:

Dead Goose Falls From Sky, Sends Waterfowl Hunter To Shock Trauma (video)
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ‐ An experienced hunter is recovering after a goose that was shot and killed fell from the sky and hit the man in Easton, Maryland.

The waterfowl hunter found himself in the crosshairs of his harvest on Thursday ‐ knocked out cold by a dead goose falling from the sky.

"These birds weigh anywhere from 10 to probably 14 pounds. They can have a wingspan of up to six feet," says Candy Thomson, Maryland Natural Resources Police. "So, if they’re 35 yards up in the air, and they’re falling 60 feet and they hit you in the head, it’s going to definitely cause severe damage."

Maryland Natural Resources Police say the unpredictable scene played out near the Miles River.

A group of hunters had leased private land and took their shots at a flock of geese before sunset. Robert Meilhammer, 51, was severely injured on his head and face.

Putin, power and poison: Russia's elite FSB spy club
[BBC] FSB. The letters are not just familiar to fans of spy thrillers. They have come to symbolise Vladimir Putin's grip on power in Russia.

Russia's secretive security agency has gained notoriety around the world with its intelligence and counter-terror operations. But with roots in the Soviet Union's KGB secret police, allegations of state-sanctioned killings and close ties to the president, it faces questions about its true nature and ambitions.

What does the FSB do? Counter-terrorism and counter-espionage.

The Federal Security Service's (FSB) was set up in 1995, and is tasked with tackling perceived threats to the Russian state. Mr Putin ran the agency before he came to power. It co-operates with foreign police forces in fighting jihadists and some organised crime gangs.

Skipping down a bit:

Cyber spying and interference - The FSB is integral to Russia's new doctrine of information warfare, which includes shaping public opinion abroad via social media.

"Shaping public opinion abroad." What an amazing coincidence.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Victor Davis Hansen - The Ticking Memo
[National Review] The House Intelligence Committee memo is pretty simple. It should not have been classified and thus far withheld from the public.

In fact, far more information now needs to be released. Despite the outcry, as Chairman Devin Nunes clarified, the memo can easily be in the near future supported or refuted by adducing official documents.

In other words, the memo makes a series of transparent statements and leaves it up to the criminal-justice system and the public to ascertain subsequent criminal liability. It is likely that the basic accuracy of the document will not be questioned, but rather opponents, some of them mentioned in the memo, will either ask why the resulting embarrassing information needed to be aired or insist that there are only minor possible crimes in the events it narrates, or both. Remember, officials from the FBI supposedly read the memo before its release to ensure that there were not factual errors or misrepresentations.

In sum, on four occasions during and after the 2016 campaign, the FBI and DOJ approached a federal FISA court ‐ established to allow monitoring of foreign nationals engaged in efforts to harm the U.S. or American citizens deliberately or inadvertently in their service ‐ to surveil Carter Page, a sometime Trump adviser. These requests also mentioned George Papadopoulos, apparently as a preexisting target of an earlier investigation by FBI official Peter Strzok, but according to the memo mysteriously there was not adduced any direct connection between the two individuals’ activities.

The basis of the requests was an anti-Trump dossier that the FBI and DOJ had purchased from a private concern. At the time of their various requests, FBI director James Comey and his deputy, Andrew McCabe, apparently knew that the document was the work of an opposition-research team, hired and paid, through a series of intermediaries, by the Clinton campaign.

The same knowledge supposedly was known to DOJ officials Sally Yates, Dana Boente, and Rod Rosenstein, who variously joined the FISA requests. The FBI and DOJ requests to the court were also apparently bolstered by citing news accounts in the popular media about possible Russian collusion, which in circular fashion had been the result of efforts by the authors and purveyors of the dossier to leak its contents to the media.

#1  Response from a colleague:

Sara Carter, an investigative reporter with Circa and Sara A Carter.com, was first to break the news of FISA abuses last year. She has stated that her sources have told her that the Horowitz DOJ IG Report has very damaging findings on how the FBI ( McCabe) especially, mishandled the Clinton Email Investigation and that Director Wray's primary reason for firing McCabe was Director Wray being briefed on the initial findings of that IG Report. Sara Carter is a frequent guest, almost nightly, on both Hannity and Lou Dobbs. The real hammer on the head of the DOJ and FBI will be when the Inspector Genera'ls Report is released later this month or early March. As I stated earlier, AG Sessions referred these latest allegations to the DOG IG for investigation. Remember, the IG is only a fact finding investigative body. It can only refer the findings to the US Attorney's Office for prosecutorial review as was done in the Hillary Email matter. The Dems won't be able to " spin" that one if the findings are serious as have been reported by Sara Carter and others.

Mattis: The Syrian Regime ‘Would Be Ill-Advised' to Use Chemical Weapons Again
[Free Beacon] Defense Secretary James Mattis on Friday warned the Syrian regime to think carefully before using chemical weapons again.

Mattis' threat appeared to be in reference to the U.S. military strikes on a Syrian airfield last April, which were in retaliation for a chemical attack carried out by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad days earlier, Politico reported.

"You've all seen how we reacted to that," Mattis said, adding that the Syrian regime "would be ill-advised" to launch more chemical attacks, as some recent reports from inside the country suggest.

Mattis acknowledged those reports and said the Pentagon was looking for evidence to confirm them. "Groups on the ground, NGOs, fighters have said" that the regime has used sarin gas in recent attacks, he said, but "we do not have evidence."

The regime appears to have weaponized chlorine again, Mattis said, but "we are even more concerned about the possibility of sarin use."

Paraphrasing Cato 'The Elder' - The Democratic Party Must Be Destroyed
[American Thinker] Prior to the Third Punic War against Carthage in the 2nd Century BC, Cato the Elder was said to have ended all his speeches in the Roman senate by saying, "Carthage must be destroyed." Notice, Cato did not say 'defeated' but 'destroyed.' What do you suppose motivated this distinguish statesman to take such an extreme position? It was that in the Second Punic War (218 to 201 BC), Rome came close to losing to the Carthaginians. In that war, Rome suffered a number of severe battlefield defeats at the hands of Hannibal's army, most notable being the Battle of Cannae, the worse Roman defeat in history. To Cato, Carthage, although defeated in the Second Punic War, was still a threat to the Republic of Rome.

Let's move ahead in time. Today we see the depravity and anti-Americanism that is prevalent in today's Democratic Party is literally putting our constitutional republic at risk. Do you think that's an exaggeration? Let's take a look.

On social issues, the Democrats are the leading force of moral decay in America. They are the champion of such perverse things as unrestricted abortion, homosexual marriage, transgenderism, racial strife, and a God-hating form of radical secularism. They corrupt every institution in the U.S. with these 'novel' concepts from our schools to the military and everything in between. The one thing these initiatives all have in common is that they rot out the foundation of the Republic and undermine the family.

When it comes to economic matters, Democratic policies suffocate growth through regulations, high taxes, and crony capitalism. In the party's view, personal self-sufficiency, independence, and holding a traditional family together are sins, while dependency on government is a virtue. Judging by their behavior, the only growth the Democrats applaud and work towards is growth in government, growth in the welfare rolls, and growth in the influx of Third-World immigrants into the country.

Immigration deserves a special comment. As is often correctly said, demographics is destiny. Look at the quantity and quality of the type of immigration that the Democrats push for. To the Democrats whose creed is 'diversity is strength,' America will be worthy only when its composition mirrors that of the United Nations. If such a suicidal attitude prevails, then the United States as we know it is gone. Do the Democrats care? If they do, it is only that the transformation isn't happening fast enough

Interpol Report: 50 Suspected ISIS Fighters Infiltrated Italy, May Aim To Strike Across Europe?
[PJ] A recent report circulated by Interpol names 50 Tunisians who, it is suspected, have become fighters for the Islamic State (ISIS). These men have infiltrated Italy from Tunisia, and Interpol warned authorities that they may target cities across Europe. Italian police have denied the report's validity.

The United Nations has estimated that roughly 5,500 Tunisians have travelled to ISIS territory in Syria and Iraq to join the Islamist terror state. As ISIS has largely collapsed in the Middle East, terrorists may spread into other areas to wreak havoc.

Interpol's general secretariat drafted the list of 50 suspected ISIS fighters in Italy, and sent it to the Italian interior ministry on November 29. They later distributed the list to anti-terrorism agencies across the continent, The Guardian reported.

Four of the suspects on the list were already known to European intelligence agencies. One "may have already crossed the Italian-French border, to reach Gard, a department in southern France, in the Occitanie region," the agency told The Guardian. "According to the information obtained in the field of international cooperation, the Tunisian citizens are linked to Isis/Daesh and would have reached Europe aboard unidentified boats."

How Dallas SWAT Cornered, Killed A Man Who Just Killed 5 Cops
[Dallas News] Larry Gordon could hear the fear in his own voice, and he wondered if the gunman could hear it, too. In standoff negotiations, tone is everything. He needed this guy to know he was heard, feel he was understood.

But this had lasted too many hours, and the tension, like the burnt smell of gunfire in the air, was overwhelming. Gordon’s knees ached from crouching. Pain shot through his shoulders and the back of his neck ‐ either from stress, or the weight of his ceramic-plated vest, or both.

He usually felt calm, even a little bored, in negotiations. Most involved desperate men with small guns and no real plan. This guy, separated from Gordon by a few dozen feet and a couple of sheetrock walls, had a semiautomatic rifle and a clearly defined endgame. The cops weren’t intervening in some private drama he’d set in motion. The way the gunman saw it, he was doing the intervening. He’d come for them.

In the best of scenarios, Gordon’s aim was to talk people down, coax them out peacefully. Tonight that seemed impossible. Outside, several officers were already down. Gordon didn’t know how many. He’d gotten word that one had died, and then another. Then another...

Yemeni rocket artillery hits Soddy targets in Marib
The Yemeni rocketry force launched on Thursday a ballistic missile (Qaher M2) onto the Saudi-led military camp of abu Al-Rish in Marib province, according to Yemeni sources which added that the rocket hit its target.

On Wednesday night, Yemeni rocketry force also had launched a ballistic missile (Qaher M2) onto a gathering of the Saudi-led aggression’s commanders in Al-Jawf province.

Yemen has been since March 2015 under a brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition, in a bid to restore power to fugitive former president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis have been injured and martyred in Saudi-led strikes, with the vast majority of them are civilians.

However, the allied forces of the Yemeni Army and popular committees established by Ansarullah revolutionaries have been heroically confronting the aggression with all means, inflicting huge losses upon Saudi-led forces.

The Saudi-led coalition – which also includes UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Sudan and Kuwait – has been also imposing a blockade on the impoverished country’s ports and airports as a part of the aggression.

What Could Go Wrong? NY To Give Tablet Computers To 51,000 Prison Inmates
[Hot Air] Good news for every inmate in New York State prisons: Each of you will soon be receiving your own tablet computer.

The free tablets for all 51,000 state prisoners are being sold to the public as an opportunity to educate prisoners for a law-abiding life when their sentence is completed. Although inmates will not have uncontrolled Internet access, prison system officials say the individual devices will help prisoners keep in touch with their families and become better prepared to reenter lawful society.

Saudi Army suffers heavy casualties in failed offensive near Yemeni border
[ALMASDARNEWS] For the second time this week, the Saudi Army launched a big offensive in the southern part of the Najran region, targeting the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
positions near the Yemeni border.

The Saudi Army stormed the al-Boaa Desert of the Najran region on Friday, striking the Houthi defenses along the Yemen-Saudi border in an attempt to reclaim this large area.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
the attack would not go as planned, despite the fact that the Saudi Armed Forces had the superior weaponry and manpower.

According to the official media wing of the Houthi forces, their fighters foiled the big offensive in the al-Boaa Desert, killing and wounding a large number of Saudi soldiers in the process.

The Houthi media wing added that their forces launched a swift counter-attack after the offensive in order to claim more ground from the Saudi Coalition.

This latest attack by the Saudi Army marks the fourth time in two weeks that they have attempted to capture the al-Boaa Desert.

Tribal retribution killings in Sebha raise tensions
Tunis, 1 February 2018:

Sebha remains tense after fighting between the Awlad Sulieman and Tebu intensified last night following tit-for-tat killings.

The town is now largely quiet, though occasional shots can still be heard locals told the Libya Herald. Last night saw heavy artillery strikes and extensive gun battles between the two sides, though exact casualty figures are unclear at this stage.

Fighting near the historic Fort, seriously damaged in early 2014, is particularly fierce and has often been a focal point for conflict in the past.

Violence broke out on Sunday when a figure inside a blacked out car belonging to a member of the Awlad Sulieman opened fire on three Tebu at a café. Ahmed Adel was killed and his two friends injured.

The attack took place in Nassirya district in the north of Sebha, an ethnically mixed neighbourhood in comparison to other parts of the town.

Retribution was swift with Tebu brigades killing an army officer and policeman, both understood to be Awlad Suieman.

Events over the recent days underline how the Rome peace deal agreed between the two sides and the Tuareg remains very fragile. Observers have not been optimistic the accord would hold and their cynicism appears well founded.

Presidency Council Deputy Abdulsalam Kajman has often had to step in and mediate when tensions rises between the various groups.

Meanwhile, four members of ISIS were killed and a civilian injured yesterday in Brak Al-Shatti. The ISIS fighters were looking for food on the outskirts of the town but came under attack from locals supportive of the Libyan National Army.

Two other soldiers were maimed after the attack by the "separatist terrorist organization" ‐ Turkey’s official term for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, the army said in a statement.

The PKK is blacklisted as a terror organization by Ankara and its Western allies.

Meanwhile,

in an earlier attack, one soldier was killed and five were maimed after an attack near a military base in the Cukurca district of Hakkari province.

Earlier Ottoman Turkish media reported two Ottoman Turkish soldiers were killed in an attack in Hakkari’s Semdinli district ‐ which appeared to be a separate incident ‐ blamed on the PKK launching a missile from northern Iraq. But the army did not refer to this attack in its statements.

Turkish authorities classify Ankara tax office blast as terrorist attack
[ALMASDARNEWS] An kaboom in an empty building of a local tax office in the Ottoman Turkish capital of Ankara on Thursday was a terrorist attack carried out by suspects linked to the Kurdish leftist Democratic Union party, Ankara governor’s office said Friday.

"As a result of the on-site investigation of the kaboom on February 1... evidence was found that an bomb was used. The video footage from outdoor surveillance cameras was studied and it turned out that a suspicious man entered the building and left a bag, which presumably contained an bomb, at the entrance," the governor’s office said in a statement.

According to the statement, police on Friday launched the pursuit of the perpetrator of the attack identified during the investigation, as well as two of his accomplices.

"During the pursuit, one of the suspects, who carried false ID papers, was killed. He was identified as Ersen Ertogan born in 1991 in the province of Mardin, who was trained in a camp in a YPG-held area in Syria and entered The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

"In total, eight people, who maintained contacts with the perpetrator of the attack, were placed in durance vile

in the provinces of Adana, Sirnak and Mardin," according to the document.

On February 1, a powerful kaboom was heard in Ankara. Local media reported citing authorities, it was a gas kaboom in a local tax office. As a result, at least three people were maimed in the blast.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The U.S. is currently in talks with the Ottoman Turkish regime regarding the state of affairs inside the Syrian town of Manbij, U.S. Secretary of Defense James stated on Friday.

"I am not going to discuss [it] right now," Mattis told news hounds during his presser.

Arab foreign ministers seek ‘multilateral’ process to revive Mideast peace talks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Arab foreign ministers on Thursday called for the creation of a UN-backed "multilateral mechanism" to help revive the grinding of the peace processor between Israel and the Paleostinians.

The appeal was issued at the end of a two-day meeting to discuss US President Donald Trump

Trump’s decision also to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv triggered deadly festivities in Paleostinian territories and was rejected in a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution.

The Paleostinians have frozen contacts with the Trump administration over the decision and said the United States can no longer mediate in the Middle East conflict following Trump’s decision.

Afghan allegations based on misconceptions caused by foreign elements: NSC
[GEO.TV] The National Security Committee (NSC) on Friday, in a statement issued, said the allegations by the Afghan government, following a recent spate of terrorist attacks in Kabul, are based on "misconceptions created by certain foreign elements".

The committee expressed the resolve to forge ahead, despite difficulties, with positive engagement with Afghanistan, including the already planned visit of the Pak delegation to Kabul on February 3, 2018, for discussions on Pakistain-proposed "Afghanistan-Pakistain Action Plan for Solidarity".

Expressing satisfaction on the progress made with regard to border controls with Afghanistan, the NSC noted that the Afghan government should support the fencing of the Pakistain-Afghanistan border
...also known as Pashtunistan, home of ignorance, poverty, and automatic weapons...
as being in the interest of both countries.

The meeting also reviewed the actions taken by the federal and provincial governments to fulfil the country’s international responsibilities under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) framework.

It expressed satisfaction over the objectives achieved so far and directed the concerned ministries to complete the few outstanding actions at the earliest.

The NSC also directed that the achievements made by Pakistain in fulfilling its international obligations should be fully shared with the FATF, and expressed its hope that the task force will not be politicised by a few countries.

Pakistan will not allow its land to be used against neighbours: FO Cannot load M3U8: Crossdomain access denied
[GEO.TV] The Foreign Office on Friday strongly rejected accusations of Pakistain supporting the Afghan Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and Haqqani network, and said the country will not allow its land to be used against any of its neighbours.

In the weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said Pakistain strongly rejects accusations of supporting the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani network and opposes terrorism in any shape and form.

Pakistain has been rendering continuous sacrifices for the cause of global peace. It will not allow its land to be used against any of its neighbouring countries, and it expects the same from its neighbours, said the spokesperson.

The FO spokesperson reiterated that focus should be on eliminating safe havens of the TTP, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar in Afghanistan.

Pakistain has constructed 975 posts along its border with Afghanistan, while Afghanistan has built nearly 200 posts only, said Faisal.

470 attacks were carried out in Pakistain from Afghanistan, he said.

The spokesperson noted that the 27 suspects handed over to Afghan authorities recently were in connection to the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani network.

We want a solution to the Afghan issue in accordance with the wishes of the Afghan public, the spokesperson said, adding that Pakistain wants immediate and dignified return of Afghan refugees to their country.

Pakistain’s foreign policy is in accordance with the wishes of its people and national interests, he said.

Afghanistan
Commanders authorized to deal with terror sanctuaries in Afghanistan, Pakistan: US
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The new strategy for South Asia authorizes the US military commanders to act against the terror sanctuaries both in Afghanistan and Pakistain, the White House has said.

According to a statement by White House "President Trump’s conditions-based South Asia Strategy provides commanders with the authority and resources needed to deny bandidos Death Eaters the safe haven they seek in Afghanistan and Pakistain."

The statement further adds that "The President has suspended security assistance to Pakistain, sending a long overdue message to aid recipients that we expect them to fully join us in combatting terrorism."

This comes as President Trump announced the new US strategy for South Asia late in August last year as he insisted on relentless fight to eliminate the menace of terrorism.

President Trump also harshly criticized Pakistain for harboring the terrorist groups in its soil and said ""For its part, Pakistain often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror."

Since the announcement of the new strategy for South Asia, the US military has reportedly carried out a series of Arclight airstrikes in the tribal regions of Pakistain close to the Durand Line with Afghanistan.

Earlier, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Mike Pampeo had warned that the US would take necessary steps if Pakistain fails to take actions against the safe havens of the terror groups.

"We are doing our best to inform the Paks that this is no longer going to be acceptable. So this conditioned aid, we have given them a chance. If they fix this problem, we are happy to continue to engage with them and be their partner. But if they don’t, we’re going to protect America," Pampeo told CBS in an interview earlier last month.

Roots of recent deadly attacks have been found, says President Ghani
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani

He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
says the roots of the recent deadly attacks in Kabul and other key cities and provinces have been ascertained.

In his speech at the ARG Palace mosque, President Ghani said at least eleven suspects having links with the attacks have been tossed in the clink
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
and the main roots have been found.

He said the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
group has also grabbed credit for the attacks as he slammed the group for ignoring both Allah and his prophet.

President Ghani further added that the center of the Taliban is Pakistain, apparently pointing towards the leadership council of the group.

He also added that the time has come for the Pak government to take a decision, insisting that they should accept what they accept for themselves as Islam does not differentiate between white and black.

In regards to the peace efforts, President Ghani said the nation wants peace and he is ready to lay down his for the sake of peace, insisting that the enemies should know that the Afghan nation will achieve success in both peace and war.

This comes as the Afghan intelligence chief and minister of interior said Thursday that undeniable information and evidences have been shared with the Pak officials regarding the recent attacks.

Russian Air Force destroys entire jihadist convoy in Idlib
[ALMASDARNEWS] Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a powerful Arclight airstrike over the eastern countryside of the Idlib Governorate, targeting a massive convoy of jihadist rebels heading to the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) front-lines.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Russian Air Force was given exact coordinates of the jihadist convoy from the intelligence wing of the Tiger Forces.

Once the coordinates were given from the Tiger Forces’ spy, the Russian Air Force destroyed the entire jihadist convoy near the strategic town of Saraqib, which is located along an important highway.

The source in Damascus reported that at least two tanks, three pick-up trucks, and one cycle of violence was destroyed by the Russian airstrikes.

In addition to the destruction, a large number of jihadist rebels that were heading to the east Idlib front were eliminated by the Russian attack.

The Memo Has Been Released
Direct access is here; it's straining under heavy load right now.

[Washington Examiner] The House Intelligence Committee has released its controversial memo outlining alleged abuses of secret surveillance by the FBI and Justice Department in the Trump-Russia investigation. Here are some key points:

* The Steele dossier formed an essential part of the initial and all three renewal FISA applications against Carter Page.

* Andrew McCabe confirmed that no FISA warrant would have been sought from the FISA Court without the Steele dossier information.

* The four FISA surveillance applications were signed by, in various combinations, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Sally Yates, Dana Boente, and Rod Rosenstein.

* The FBI authorized payments to Steele for work on the dossier. The FBI terminated its agreement with Steele in late October when it learned, by reading an article in Mother Jones, that Steele was talking to the media.

* The political origins of the Steele dossier were known to senior DOJ and FBI officials, but excluded from the FISA applications.

* DOJ official Bruce Ohr met with Steele beginning in the summer of 2016 and relayed to DOJ information about Steele's bias. Steele told Ohr that he, Steele, was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected president and was passionate about him not becoming president.

#1  My lovely wife of 46 years says there is a Democratic Memo, as opposed to this 'Republican Memo'. Does the Dem version require approval of the FBI and POTUS prior to release? If not, why not?
Posted by: Bobby || 02/03/2018 3:32 Comments || Top||

#2  Answered my own question:

For the Democrat's memo to actually be released, it would have to undergo the same process that the Republican memo has gone through.

First, the House Intelligence Committee would vote to have the memo released to the public - and if they vote for it, President Donald Trump would have five days to object to its public release.

However....

When the committee voted Monday to release the memo spearheaded by House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, the committee also rejected a motion from Schiff to release his own memo at the same time.

"Well, we are going to try to force another vote on this," Schiff told CBS on Friday about his memo. "The Republicans voted down the release of the Democratic response, which was quite breathtaking, because they said they were offering their own memo in the interest of full transparency."

House Speaker Paul Ryan's spokeswoman AshLee Strong said the speaker is open to the Democrat's memo to be released.
"The speaker is in favor of greater transparency," Strong said in a statement. "If it is scrubbed to ensure it does not reveal sources and methods of our intelligence gathering, the speaker supports the release of the Democrats' memo."

The six sanctioned individuals included five Lebanese and one Iraqi, most of them linked to al-Inmaa Engineering and Contracting, the Treasury Department said in a statement. The seven entities were firms based in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Leb and Ghana, the statement said.

The sanctions include trade bans and assets freezes.

Arabia
Religious discourse and the diagnosis of Sahwa
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] On 7 October 1993, a royal decree was issued for the establishment of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, with its full nomenclature being The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance.

From its preamble, we come to know that Sheikh Mufti General Abdul Aziz bin Baz had adjudged "the need to establish the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments and guidance and advocacy to God Almighty, and our support for it". At that time, the state of Islamic understanding in the region was characterized by agitation and impulsiveness.

Its rhetoric opposed the Gulf War, the deployment of American forces, and there was a rise in ’jihadist literature’ after the Afghan-Soviet war. All these developments made governments more interested than ever in monitoring the religious discourse, and controlling any potential political fallout.

Monitoring the radical discourse
Before the establishment of the Ministry, anyone could deliver a lecture in any mosque or distribute political flyers in any shop or mosque. The government had to find a formula for institutionalizing the religious discourse against any politicization of any religious interpretation of the time.

The implementation of the royal decree in mid-1994 helped extinguish the fires. The symbols of the so-called ’Sahwa’ or ’awakening’ were seized before things could get out of hand.

A few days ago, Dr. Tewfik al-Sudairi, deputy minister of Islamic affairs, published a book entitled Diagnosing the Sahwa - Analysis and Recollections, in which he recalls the different trends of the times.

The author admits that the current situation allows him to write such a book and bring out memories out of the drawer and in to the printing press.

Al-Sudairi is known for his moderate views ‐ both in the administrative and intellectual realms. He has been critical of the Moslem Brüderbund and the Sahwa movement since his early years, although his criticism was not abrasive because of the circumstances of the past. The ministry, since its establishment, could not stay away from all the confusion of various Islamic currents.

On the one hand, the Moslem Brüderbund developed its own strategies for garnering leadership, while the Sahwa sought to spread its influence through propaganda and through its control over mosques.

These two trends opposed al-Madinah Salafism, what is currently known as al-Jamiyya. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the ministry now has more than 90,000 mosques, but still these currents wish to dominate them.

A guiding light
In the book Dr. Tewfik al-Sudairi says: "My generation witnessed the refraction of the national left, and the beginning of the glow of Islamic thought, or what can be called the thought of the lucrative interpretation and the employment of religion specifically with a political interest. I was aware of this new wave and I followed the intellectual movement of my predecessors which took full form before the 1967 war. But I have not fully witnessed it because of my age."

"I also grew up in a conservative and religious environment that is deeply loyal to the identity of the Saudi state, and therefore I cannot write about that period as I write about the Islamic political dynamic movement since I witnessed it in school, mosques, the university, the cultural activities and the different walks of life."

Dr. Tewfik al-Sudairi discusses in the book the formation of the Moslem Brüderbund, the Juhayman incident and the effects of the Sahwa. Saudi newspapers have published several reviews of the book, according importance to this book, given the position and the eminence of the writer.

The book can be turned into a guide at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, in order to immunize the workers from the radical ideas of various Islamist movements. This is not difficult, as this lies at the core of the ministry's work. I recall that one of the main objectives and policies of the Ministry, specifically its second objective, refers to the subject of "qualified preachers".

The book could prove useful in refining the qualification of those responsible for religious discourse. al-Sudairi is not far from drawing policies and adapting to the great Saudi shift against the outlook of the past 30 years that destroyed, exhausted and ruined both society and government.

Let the experience be a lesson to us; vital institutions lead societies to change, especially since there is a political desire to bridge the gap and overcome the old discourse. It is a difficult and necessary task so as not to witness turmoil once or twice every year, leaving behind many who neither repent nor remember.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Inside The HPSCI Memo – A Key Distinction Being Conflated

The FISA 'warrant' request, against Carter Page, was made October 21st, 2016, under Title I of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Meaning the surveillance application was specifically stating, to the court, the U.S. individual was likely an actual agent of a foreign government, ie. "a spy."

The DOJ (National Security Division) and the FBI (Counterintelligence Division) were not asking to review ancillary data collected on U.S. Person Carter Page as an outcome of surveillance on a foreign person, or foreign agent; that would be Title 7 (FISA-702).

In action outlined within the HPSCI memo, the DOJ and FBI were specifically telling the FISA court they had evidence that U.S. Person Carter Page was working as an agent of a foreign government. He was their target, and therefore requesting direct FISA Title 1 surveillance of that target on October 21st, 2016.

To give validity to the underlying position of the DOJ and FBI, the justice department used: the Clinton-Steele Dossier; media reports from -and of- the Clinton-Steele dossier; and opposition research provided by Clinton financed Fusion-GPS through Nellie Ohr, so they could monitor U.S. Person Carter Page.

In total, this sketchy assembly of political campaign research was used by the FBI as evidence to back-up their claim U.S. person Carter Page was working as a foreign agent; essentially saying: he was a spy. This application assembly was then certified on four different occasions by specific officials within the DOJ and FBI.

Without knowing the court had been provided political research, the FISA Court granted the FBI full surveillance authority for U.S. Person Carter Page. The distinction is rather stark.

The FBI was not targeting Page incidentally as an outcome of foreign intelligence collection; the FBI was targeting Carter Page directly. AND as such, they carried full surveillance authority upon all of these activities, interactions, communications, and contacts therein.

Because of this direct approach, any group, organization or entity who came in contact with U.S. Person Carter Page was then open for ancillary review and FBI investigation. Those who engaged in contact with Carter Page became subject to surveillance and searches in the same manner as if Page was an actual foreign agent.

I think that you need to add Obama Deep State to your Organization pull-down.

#1  Appears (if I have this correct) Mr. Page was the FBI's FISA ticket for collection. Once collection began, incidental collection was freely exploited as well. 'Incidental collection' (of the greater Trump team) then being the actual target.

Still does not explain Steele's reported motivation and enthusiasm to destroy the Donald Trump candidacy.

As some have speculated, the Nunes memo is the tip of the iceberg.

I founded Z Street in 2009 to educate Americans about the Middle East and Israel’s defense against terror. We applied for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the tax code in December 2009‐a process that usually takes three to six months.

Instead, the application languished. In late July 2010, an IRS agent truthfully responded to our lawyer’s query about why processing was taking so long: Z Street’s application was getting special scrutiny, the agent said, because it was related to Israel. Some applications for tax-exempt status were being sent to a special office in Washington for review of whether the applicants’ policy positions conflicted with those of the Obama administration.

So in August 2010 we sued the IRS for violating Z Street’s constitutional rights, including the First Amendment right to be free from viewpoint discrimination‐government treatment that differs depending on one’s political position.

Now we know the truth, and it’s exactly as bad as we thought. IRS documents‐those they didn’t "lose" or otherwise fail to produce‐reveal the following:

• Our application was flagged because Z Street’s mission related to Israel, a country with terrorism. Therefore, an IRS manager in our case said in sworn testimony, the IRS needed to investigate whether Z Street was funding terror.

• Some applications for tax-exempt status were indeed being sent to IRS headquarters in Washington for more intense scrutiny. They were selected because of the applicants’ viewpoint.

• In August 2010, three other Jewish organizations applying for tax-exempt status were asked by the IRS to "explain their religious beliefs about the Land of Israel."
While claiming to be investigating Z Street’s funding of terror, the IRS never asked how or where Z Street spent its money. The IRS ultimately granted Z Street’s application, in October 2016, without asking anything about terror, or money, or anything else it hadn’t known in 2010.

Of course groups that wanted to send donations to Gaza were approved without any hesitation:

#1  They should have applied by calling themselves 'Hipster Pansies for Palestine', then change the name back once they got IRS approval. Naturally, no one got punished, demoted or fired over this.

#4  Maybe not - they lost their 501(c)(3) status seven years ago. They may have gotten it back by filing under a different name, though.

US move turns spotlight on Al Sabreen movement, the arms of Iran in Palestine
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Paleostinian Al Sabreen movement, active in Gazoo and the West Bank, was in the news again when the State Department on Wednesday announced that it was listing the organization on its terror black list.

The Al Sabreen movement was founded by dissident Shiite leaders of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
(PIJ) in April 2014, has taken ideological inspiration from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, as well as the Lebanese "Hezbollah" militia, calling publicly for the Iranian expansion project in the region and promoting Iran as the main defender of Islam and the only country that is concerned for the Paleostinian case.

Sabreen movement
Mashreq News site which is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has revealed in a special report seen by Al Arabiya.Net, that Al Sabreen movement received funds from Iran. According to the report, Iranian charity organizations used a great opportunity for the Shiite ideas to spread among the Paleostinians in Gazoo. After a while, a large number of them declared their conversion to Shiism, which paved the way to establish the first Paleostinian political Shiite group in Gazoo under the name of the Al Sabreen movement.

Mohammed Harb, one of the activists involved in the movement in Rafah, talked about the reasons behind the split in a previous interview on The Monitor site, where he revealed that the Al Sabreen movement was established in 2010 as a reformative movement and as part of the Islamic Jihad movement calling for the revival of Fathi Shiqaqi tought, the first founder of the Islamic Jihad, that called for an Islamic revolution following the Khomeini and the Iranian revolution.

Expansion
Al Sabreen movement activity expanded in Gazoo when it was under the control of Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede,, but they have their disagreements since July 6, 2015. Press sources reported that a decision by Hamas leadership to prohibit and end the Al Sabreen movement, because it was proven that the movement was involved in acts that went against the beliefs of the people of Gazoo , but apparently this could not be done because of Iranian pressure on Hamas.

In many videos and interviews published on YouTube, Hisham Salem, the Secretary General of Al Sabreen Movement, glorifies the Iranian regime and its supreme leader Ali Khamenei, as well as the Iranian position on Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
supporting the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen.

#1  I am just curious if any linguists here know if the Arabic "Al Sabreen" has a common root with Hebrew's "Sabra?"

I can see the Iranians trying to appropriate a word for natives of Israel.

But my language skills with Hebrew are bad and Arabic, non-existent.

Maxine Waters: There should be a disclaimer when Trump appears on TV
[THEHILL] Rep. Maxine Waters
U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district, serving since 1991, a total of 26.175211639509975 years. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the most senior of the 12 black women currently serving in the United States Congress, is a member and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Before becoming a member of Congress she served in the California Assembly, to which she was first elected back when Disco was in flower, in 1976, which would make it 41.17315825141963 years. She has been a politician for virtually all her adult life. If she was brighter she'd be a Communist...
'>Comrade Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) says President Trump’s addresses to the nation are so dangerous that they should come with a parental advisory.

"This president with his vulgarity and his disrespect for women and people of color is a terrible role model for our children," Waters said Wednesday, in her response to Trump’s State of the Union address.

"Whenever he appears on TV, there should be a disclaimer that says ’This may not be acceptable for children.’"
Only if all your video's and writing carry the disclaimer: "This woman is a batshit crazy commie."

Waters, a frequent critic of the president, said Trump’s calls for unity in his speech were ironic given his past "racist" statements.

"Yesterday Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
had the audacity to call upon people to set aside differences when, in reality, he has divided Americans in ways no other modern president has done," Waters said in a pre-recorded video aired on BET.

As an example of the president's divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
ness, Waters pointed to Trump's statement last summer that there were people to "blame on both sides" at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., during which a counterprotester was killed. She also pointed to his reported "shithole countries" remark about Haiti, El Salvador and African nations.

Two contrasting styles when it comes to the Right to Kepp and Bear Arms:

The T&A style.

And the plain, straight up ass.

I fail to see the utility of including scantily clad wimmin and just another pretty face. The pretty face is just that, plus a blank screen to boot. The scantily clad wimmin are another matter. Watching them when an ejected casing get caught in their bikini; Now that's entertainment!

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Pistol ammunition prices were mostly steady. Rifle ammunition prices were mixed.

Prices for used pistols were mixed. Prices for used rifles were mostly lower.

New Lows:

Arabia
Who is behind militants in Aden?
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] As signs of the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels’ defeat in the Yemeni capital Sanaa emerged, battle erupted in the temporary capital Sanaa.

Igniting battles in the South is no coincidence as it reflects the worries of those who are gambling on the war to persist in the North. They believe that the legitimate forces will not win since this would guarantee their establishment of a state in South Yemen.

The prospects of rebels, i.e. the Houthis’, defeat have increased in the North ever since their former ally former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
ended his alliance with them. The Houthis’ situation worsened after they killed Saleh as most of the latter’s supporters turned against them.

Hostile regional parties like Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
sought to fuel the situation by worsening the southern separatist militias’ propaganda that incites against the government. This political activity is nothing new but it now harmonizes with the Houthis’ interests and seeks to create a front that compensates the Houthis for losing Saleh’s camp by besieging the government in Aden.

Government forces which thought they will restore Sanaa realized they can lose Aden. It’s a bad political and military development that proves old fears that southern parties which tend to favor separation are infiltrated by the same powers ‐ specifically Iran and Qatar ‐ that want to prolong the duration of war in Yemen.

This contradicts with what Qatar has been marketing as it claimed there are disputes among the members of the coalition in support of the legitimate government. Doha has been playing the same old tune as it thinks if it convinces people, it will be able to neutralize the anti-terror quartet that’s boycotted it.

Favoring separation
This analysis does not mean there is no desire to separate into North and South and that there are no movements in favor of this separation; however, it shows the relation between the events in which more than 20 people were killed - or who were rather killed during unjustified confrontations.

Those calling for separation call for using military power based on complaints from the current situation due to the brutal war. What’s certain is that the armed attack on the premiership headquarters has gone beyond the limits of a political dispute.

The gang behind the attack, and which raises slogans that appeal to the sentiment of Yemenis in the South, is now like the Houthis in terms of committing the same crime of taking up arms against the state.

What about their desire to separate Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
into two independent states? This is up to the Yemeni people. If they agree on separation in the future, then so be it, and if they don’t, the party in favor of separation can go ahead and take its demand to specialized international organizations under the excuse that "Yemen consisted of two independent states and its time to separate again after unity failed."

The UN may agree to this demand via the international court or another institution, and the dispute would thus end in a civilized, legal and safe way. It may also reject it and the controversy would come to an end. The Kurds in Iraq tried their luck and they had a long history that supported this right.

Laws that govern
However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
countries are not managed according to the desires of politicians and parties calling for separation but according to laws that govern peoples’ relations.

There is a wide segment of people in the South who believe that unification impoverished them and led to oppression and injustice. What’s certain is that late President Saleh’s governance destroyed all of Yemen and is in fact greatly responsible for the failure of the state.

The current war was launched to eliminate pockets of rebellion and end attempts to illegitimately seize power. It seeks to restore the state’s entity according to the UN’s project for a democratic Yemen as supported by the Gulf initiative - to establish an interim government then draft a constitution under international supervision, hold parliamentary elections then presidential elections and form a government.

Only the Yemenis choose their leaders under international supervision. Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the UAE, Iran or Qatar do not decide on their behalf. The Iranians, however, are using the Houthis to keep what they gained during the coup and to prevent the implementation of the aforementioned international plan.

Those calling for separation in the South can wait and then legally and properly request separation instead of destroying the country with their own hands and of being dragged behind countries that scheme chaotic plans to target the coalition’s countries at the expense of the Yemeni people’s lives, security and stability.

US bans export of weapons, defense services to South Sudan
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The United States on Friday banned the export of weapons and defense services to South Sudan, stepping up pressure against President Salva Kiir to end the country’s four-year conflict.

"The Department of State today announces that it is implementing restrictions on the export of defense articles and defense services into South Sudan," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

While the United States government does not conduct arms sales to South Sudan, the move prevents any American company or citizen from sending military equipment or services to the country’s warring factions.

The unilateral embargo is another signal by Washington that it is losing patience with Kiir after ceasefires have been repeatedly violated.

Jaysh Al-Islam foils large Syrian Army offensive in East Ghouta
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a big attack inside the East Ghouta region of Damascus this week, targeting the Hawsh Dawahra area that is controlled by Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
.

According to a military report earlier this week, the Syrian Arab Army was able to briefly infiltrate Jaish al-Islam’s front-lines, but were forced to after a swift counterattack by the latter.

The report added that Jaish al-Islam had heavily fortified the area with many trenches, which were used to surprise the Syrian Army troops attempting to advance on the Hawsh Dawhra area in the East Ghouta.

Gargash: Arab coalition’s action on Aden crisis has prevented strife
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said on Friday that the Arab coalition’s prudent action on Aden’s crisis avoided strife which is due to absence of wisdom among different parties.

"The priority is defeating the Houthis and their project. Serious Yemeni dialogue is required to deal with issues which have negatively accumulated," he added on Twitter.

The Air Force Is Re-Winging A-10s After All
[Popular Mechanics] It's official: The U.S. Air Force will buy new wings for aging A-10 Warthogs that risked a one way trip to the boneyard. The Air Force has made clear its intention to keep the A-10 flying after concerns surfaced that the service was taking advantage of the issue to get rid of the iconic close air support plane.

Earlier this month, a Pentagon official in charge of the A-10 program announced an effort to re-wing 110 of the jets "was not going to happen." Of the 280 A-10s still in U.S. Air Force service, 173 have received new wings to keep them flying into the 2030s. The original re-winging contract with Boeing was for 242 sets of wings, but the contract ended when it was no longer cost-effective for the company, and the Boeing production line is closing later this year.

That left at least 110 A-10s high and dry without new wings, a state that threatened to ground them for good unless a solution was found, reducing the number of A-10 squadrons from nine to six. The Air Force, focused on getting the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter up and running, didn't include a new wing contract it its 2018 budget. Congress, however added funding a new wing assembly line and four new wings to get it warmed up.

Now, the Air Force has committed to buying more wings. According to DoDBuzz General Mike Holmes, the head of the Air Force's Air Combat Command, announced last week at a Washington D.C. think tank that the service will buy more wings beyond the initial four. Exactly how many wings will "depend on a Department of Defense decision and (the Air Force's) work with Congress".

No, Puzzle Palace Mafia and the Beltway Think Tank Cabal. There is an intellectual argument to the multi-role one plane does everything. Take the F/A-18 as an example: A-6's and/or A-7's to drop the bombs, EA-6's for defense suppression, F-4's for fighter cover and so on. With a multi-role you can magically fold all those airframes into one plane and shrink the size of the air force by 20% ...
Until you need those specialists to do the hard jobs because the enemy has a vote and they don't feel like making things easy. And the bean counters have decided to throw away all of that specialist "know how" because multi-role means multi-capable.

Shocking memo reveals how Comey disgraced an honorable FBI (video)
[FOX] The information contained in the memo released by House Republicans on Friday that accused FBI and Justice Department officials of improperly obtaining permission to surveil a former Trump campaign adviser shows a tragic failure of leadership on the part of former FBI Director James Comey.

But importantly, the memo does not in any way reflect on the outstanding work of the more than 35,000 dedicated men and women of the FBI.

It pains me ‐ as a former FBI executive who loves and respects the organization ‐ to say that Comey’s short tenure at the FBI has proven to be the worst thing to happen to the agency since Director L. Patrick Gray was fired during the Watergate scandal.

If the facts stated in the memo are true ‐ despite the highly political nature of congressional committees ‐ then there was either incompetent or deliberate manipulation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court to get approval of the surveillance.

Even new agent trainees at the FBI Academy know better than to use paid opposition research and newspaper articles to support use of one of the most sensitive and intrusive surveillance techniques in the investigative toolbox. If they do use such information, the FISA judge should have been apprised of the origins of the research.

FBI agents are also taught to never mislead any court of law. It’s unlikely the surveillance warrant would have been issued if the FISA judge was aware that political opponents (the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee) had financed the information used to obtain approval of the surveillance.

FISA applications go through extensive reviews at multiple levels of executive management at the FBI and Justice Department. They are signed by the most senior FBI and Justice Department executives before they are presented to the FISA court for approval.

Government
Get all the facts out on the FBI, Justice Department
[The Hill] Mark Penn (Mark Penn served as pollster and adviser to Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, including during President Clinton’s impeachment, and today is chairman of the Harris Poll.)

Both the New York Times and the Washington Post yesterday ran editorials calling for prior restraint on a memo written by the duly elected chairman of the House Intelligence Committee after he and his staff reviewed classified documents related to the so-called Russia investigation. These editorials are a stain on American journalism, much like the Japanese internment camps were a stain on the record of the Supreme Court. They should ‐ and, I think, will over time ‐ regret them.

I have no idea what is in this memo, but it’s a memo. It’s speech. It’s from the very staff and people our Constitution assigns to oversee the Justice Department and the FBI. And the elected officials who wrote it think I should see it. The people who don’t want me to see it are the elected officials and leaders of the Democratic Party, the institutions and individuals whose actions are being reviewed, and several of the same newspapers that went to court to publish the "Pentagon Papers."

Whether the Nunes memo is a smoking gun or a pop gun, it deserves to see the light of day ‐ and the editorial writers should think about how they came to support prior restraint over sunshine and open debate. Perhaps more importantly, the news pages need to stop covering a story that has brought down six senior officials as just partisan sniping and recognize that the actions of the FBI and the Justice Department in relation to both these investigations need to come out of the darkness and be fully revealed to the American public.

[WSJ] This column is trying to imagine how an editor at The Wall Street Journal would treat a draft article alleging a political campaign adviser was secretly working for a foreign government if the story featured uncorroborated opposition research paid for by a rival campaign. If the writer of the draft article assured the editor that readers would not be told where the information originated, it’s a safe bet this would not increase the chances of publication.

This column is also trying to imagine the conversation that would ensue if a reporter or writer then tried to persuade the editor by appealing to the authority of Yahoo News.

Of course the Journal isn’t the only media outlet that enforces standards. Many organizations strive to ensure basic accuracy and fairness. Rockets kill 2 in Turkey
[Al Manar] Two people were killed and 16 were wounded in a Turkish border town Friday by rockets fired from Syria, local authorities said, as Turkey continues its offensive against a Syrian Kurdish militia.

Three rockets hit neighborhoods of Reyhanli in southern Turkey and 68-year-old Rifat Sinirli died in hospital, the state-run news agency Anadolu reported.

Reyhanli mayor Huseyin Sanverdi said on Twitter that a man was killed by a rocket fired from Syria’s Afrin region, a Kurdish enclave where the Turkish army has launched its offensive against the YPG militia deemed “terrorists” by Ankara.

Later in the afternoon, he announced a second man was killed in another attack by “treacherous terrorists.”

The Hatay governor’s office said 16 people were injured.

According to pro-opposition pages, Abu Za’id al-Askri of Harakat Ahrar al-Sham was assassinated earlier tonight while he was traveling with his cousin near the town of Ma’arat Masreen.

The Ahrar al-Sham commander’s cousin was also killed tonight.

Opposition activists have accused Syrian Arab Army (SAA) spies of carrying out the liquidation; however, no group has grabbed credit yet.

UN urges new talks with Koreas
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has underlined the necessity for key players to hold "serious" talks on North Korea's nuclear crisis following a thaw in relations between the two Koreas.

"Our objective remains the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Guterres told reporters at the UN headquarters on Friday.

"For that, it is absolutely essential that serious discussion take place among the key actors in this process and the UN will do everything possible to encourage them in that regard," he added.

Guterres pointed to the unanimity of the UN Security Council members to slap sanctions against Pyongyang, saying the unified position "has created the conditions" for addressing the North Korean nuclear threat "through diplomatic engagement."

In December 2017, the Security Council imposed a new round of US-engineered economic sanctions against Pyongyang in an attempt to cut off revenue to its military program.

The UN chief is scheduled to visit South Korea next week to hold talks with leaders in Seoul and also attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

After two days of questioning by Sherlocks, the 55-year-old Oxford professor was brought before three magistrates who have been assigned to the case, suggesting that he is facing an extensive investigation, judicial sources said.

U.S. Oil and Gas Lease Sales up 86 Percent, $360 Million to Federal and State Treasuries
[Breitbart] The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hailing the increase in oil and gas lease sales in 2017, making it the most lucrative year in almost a decade.

State offices for the agency generated $360 million in lease sales, an increase of 86 percent over the previous year.

"Oil and gas lease sales on public land directly support domestic energy production and the president’s energy dominance and job growth priorities for America," David Bernhardt, deputy secretary of Interior, said in the press release announcing the data. "[Last year] was a big year for oil and gas leasing on federal lands, and these sales provide critical revenue and job growth in rural America."

Bernhardt also said the sales reflect President Donald Trump’s deregulation agenda "to identify and modify unnecessary regulations that impede responsible energy development."

#1  "Yes... about Norway is true. I have friends there, so real norwegians have annual bonuses and stuff from oil sales, etc. and decent sums. A few thousand a year is just a prize, not to mention a cool dhss at all. Russia is like a activity and a black hole, it's all going somewhere and missing...". How about here?.

Theforgotten man? The National Debt? Shriner's Hospital for Children? Roads and Bridges? The VA? The A-10 Warthog? Healthcare for the indigent? The border wall?

I'm a a simple man. Rather than a tiring investigatory process, I'll simply employ the process of....'illumination.'

#3  I hope we raised prices. I remember that fiasco with I think it was gold mining on federal lands.

Our fee was ridiculously low.

#4  I pretty much lost my business due to the "perfect storm" combination of the shutdown in 2009/2010 and the price dip from the so-called Iran deal where Iran got a hundred billion dollars of their money back and oil prices were mysteriously low for two years (but we're not supposed to think about that. Or about that some of that money went to paying for the Russian offensive in Syria). The oilfield seems to be coming back in other places, but not in Louisiana. And even if prices are up, investment is probably going to be lacking, because noone wants to be the Saudis' or Iran's or Obama's next Example.

#5  Screw the lease fees. We should literal be getting a percentage of the royalties.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
The Nunes memo has been released
[AXIOS] The House Intelligence Committee has released, without redactions, the classified Nunes memo on alleged FISA abuses. The release was vehemently opposed by the intelligence community, with the FBI issuing a rare public statement to express its "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy."
