The US is supplying weapons to Black Sun characters in Ukraine.
A character with the emblem of the "Black Sun" shot 10 people in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
The character is detained. Most of the victims are blacks.
In the video, 18-year-old Peyton Gendron (nickname "jimboboiii") gets out of the car and immediately opens fire on passers-by, after which he heads to the store, where he kills several more people with a headshot - all of his victims are predominantly African American. At the end of the video, the shooter points his weapon at the man under the counter, but then spares him by saying "sorry".
Gendron was detained by the police - he turned out to be an ideological Nazi. A weapon with Nazi inscriptions was confiscated from him - in particular, it had runes on it, as well as the names of the terrorists Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people in Oslo in 2011, and John Ernest. By the way, on the clothes of the criminal in the photographs from social networks, the emblem of the “black sun” flaunts, which is used, among other things, by the Nazis from Azov.

What kind of camp did right-wing extremists reportedly visit in Russia?
Participating in paramilitary training is legal in Russia. Such training takes place under the protective umbrella of DOSAAF (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy), an organization whose founding dates back to the days of the Soviet Union. The actual training, in which Germans reportedly participated, is provided by a club appearing under two different names: "Rezerv" or "Partizan." It takes place at a military facility on the outskirts of St. Petersburg. Until 2018, "Partizan" and its members were listed on the website of St. Petersburg's municipal office as a vigilante group in the Vyborg district. "That was prior to my taking office," a district representative told DW when asked about the matter.
Talking to local journalists in 2017, one of the organizers of the paramilitary camp confirmed that the center also provided paramilitary training for foreigners, "including Germans." Today, the center advertises both offline and online courses, including classes on handling weapons and on "military topography" — in June 2020 alone, it offers six different classes, bookable via the Russian social network Vkontakte.
Right-wing populists in Russia
Russia in the past has served as a meeting point for right-wing populists and radicals from around Europe. In 2015, St. Petersburg hosted the "International Russian Conservative Forum." Participants included the former chairman of the German extreme-right National Democratic Party (NPD), Udo Voigt, as well as representatives from Italy's extreme-right Forza Nuova party, Greece's neo-fascist Golden Dawn party and Italy's far-right League (Lega) party.

The international white supremacist movement, sometimes called neo-nazis, sometimes other names, is full of cross fertilizations. It doesn’t matter which particular branch any given individual is connected to, just as it doesn’t really matter whether a Muslim spree killer was inspired by videos posted by ISIS, Al Qaeda, Hizb’ut Tahrir, or a member of the Muslim Brotherhood — the various groups trade the things like baseball cards, and their self-radicalized fans in both cases drink from all the firehoses.

Domestically we have a sociological problem of Critical Race Theory afficianados teaching white children that they are automatically and unchangeably racists, and feminists teaching boys that they are automatically and unchangeably sexist. It’s not surprising that some of them decide to make those identities into a positive instead of a negative, and that some of them decide to act on it, which is independent of my opinion of their ignorant stupidity. This is compounded in certain cities and states by prosecutors refusing to prosecute crimes by protected classes, creating an anything goes atmosphere until there is a predictable response, predictably with the broken and the mentally ill in the vanguard, just as so many among the Black Block cannon fodder have severe anxiety and depression issues, in many cases expressed by body dysmorphia.
Entirely separately, President Putin has been pursuing the reestablishment of the Soviet Union via economic pressure and military means for the past two decades. I think it’s stupid to create an unstable empire rife with resentment and revolt in this way when they could more easily have increased the attraction via trade and special relationships instead. The vast majority of gas stations are not owned by oil companies anyway. Right now we are having massive problems keeping the rigs we have running due to lack of spare parts and tool failures due to not enough back up tools in the pipeline. We literally CANNOT drill any faster than we are. One of our rigs had to wait -4- days for a cement crew. You cannot also train these people like jobs for McDonalds. Inexperience gets people killed and things blown up. There's no magic button to make the oilfield shutdown, go back to 800 rigs drilling and then back down to 200 again. I don't think there's 400 rigs in the US right now drilling and in 2011 we had 400 rigs in North Dakota alone.

Weapons that have been allegedly collected in Ukraine during the country’s ongoing war with Russia have been put up for sale on Telegram channels, including various kinds of automatic rifles and small arms.
Weapons said to be for sale include not just Ukrainian-origin arms such as old Soviet-era AK-47 rifles, but also American-made rifles like the M16 and the M4, along with other NATO member-origin firearms like the ARX 160 A1 manufactured by the Italian weapons company Beretta, newspaper Il Giornale reports.
It remains unclear whether the weapons are being sold by Ukrainians or by Russians who have collected them over the course of the war.

The British government announced Friday that it will back off from its affiliation with the UK National Union of Students (NUS) over allegations of antisemitism within the organization. UK Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawai said Friday the government’s funding of the organization will also be suspended until the allegations are "suitably addressed."
"Jewish students need to have confidence that this is a body that represents them, and we need to be sure that the student bodies that we engage with are speaking fairly for all students, which is why we are disengaging with the NUS until the issues have been addressed," Zahawi said.
Michelle Donelan, the minister for higher and further education in England, detailed her action against the organization.
"Enough is enough. I’ve prepared a package of sanctions against NUS following concerning incidents over many years," Donelan wrote Friday on Twitter. "Disappointed it has come to this but proud to stand up for Jewish students. NUS will not have a seat at the table until we see real change."
Dallali told the Guardian last month in an interview that she welcomed an ongoing investigation of antisemitism within the organization, which included a complaint about her own social media posts.
Matt Western, Labour’s shadow universities minister, said that it was crucial for Jewish students to feel safe and included in student organizations. "It is important that the NUS is listening, and I hope that the independent inquiry they have rightly set up resolves these issues to the satisfaction of all concerned," he said.
A spokesperson for NUS told UK media that it was unfortunate the government did not work with the union directly over the disengagement, but that it has opened an independent investigation to work with the Union of Jewish Students.

Jewish students also raised concerns after the rapper Lowkey was invited to an NUS event, after he said in an online interview that the media had "weaponized the Jewish heritage of [Ukrainian president] Zelensky" in order to ignore alleged far-right activity in Ukraine.
When the Union of Jewish Students met with NUS over the planned event in March, the NUS stated that if the appearance was problematic, they were able to stay in a "safe space" designated for those who are sensitive to loud noise to avoid Lowkey’s concert, according to the Guardian. Lowkey ultimately canceled his appearance at the event.
The organization has had a long history of accusations of antisemitic remarks and exclusion of Jews from union activities.
In April more than 20 former presidents of the National Union of Students sent a letter to the organization’s trustees urging them to address the concerns of antisemitism, according to the Guardian.
NUS has previously faced criticism for omitting Judaism from a survey of members’ religions twice within a year. The form offered 11 options including Christian, Moslem, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Agnostic and more, but neglected to mention Britannia’s fifth-largest religion. Former NUS president Shakira Martin apologized and promised to rectify the matter.
Martin was also reported to have signed the letter to the organization’s board in favor of addressing antisemitism.
Former president Malia Bouattia was accused in 2016 of antisemitic comments after she said Birmingham was "something of a Zionist outpost in British higher education." Britannia’s Newcastle University and Lincoln University voted to disaffiliate from the organization as a result.
Bouattia, an activist in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, had allegedly advocated for Paleostinian violence against Israelis, and refused to condemn the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. The British government ran a secret propaganda campaign aimed at destabilizing the country’s enemies during the Cold War by inciting violence, supporting racial tensions and encouraging hatred toward Israel, according to newly declassified documents.
The documents, which were reported on by The Guardian, highlighted a "black propaganda" campaign from the mid-1950s to late 70s that mostly targeted African countries, the Middle East and parts of Asia with fake reports that were ultimately intended to spread anti-communist sentiment.
The term refers to the creation of false news reports meant to appear as if written by those the pieces were meant to discredit — in this case, foes of the Western alliance during the Cold War.
According to the documents, the extensive campaign attempted to turn Moslems against Moscow and occasionally used anti-Israel propaganda in order to appear authentic.
It was led by the UK’s Information Research Department (IRD), which was established after World War II as a response to Soviet propaganda targeting Britannia and was coordinated with the CIA’s war propaganda operations.
Rory Cormac, an expert in the history of subversion and intelligence, told the Guardian the declassified papers were "the most important of the past two decades."
"It’s very clear now that the UK engaged in more black propaganda than historians assume and these efforts were more systemic, ambitious and offensive. Despite official denials, [this] went far beyond merely exposing Soviet disinformation," Cormac argued.
Cormac had stumbled upon the declassified documents when researching material for a book. His study of the documents constitutes the most extensive insight yet into the IRD’s disinformation operations to date, according to the report.
"The UK did not simply invent material, as the Soviets systematically did, but they definitely intended to deceive audiences in order to get the message across," he said.
Cormac said a central tactic employed by the IRD was the forging of statements that appeared to be written by Soviet agencies, including Novosti, the Soviet state-run news agency ...and if you can't trust the state-run news agency who can you believe?... The IRD forged 11 such statements between 1965-1972, the report said, including one that followed Israel’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War, highlighting Moscow’s anger at Egypt’s defeat despite the weapons and resources provided by the Soviets.
In another attempt to sow division between Moscow and its Arab allies in the Middle East, the British organization also created literature purporting to come from Moslem organizations that blamed Soviet Russia for the defeat.
"Why is the Arab nation at this time afflicted by so much sorrow and disaster? Why were the brave forces defeated in the jihad by the evil heathen Zionists?... The answers are [easily] to be found ... we are departing fast from the right path, we are following the course chosen for us by the communist-atheists for whom religion is a form of social disease," read a statement issued by the IRD and signed by a fictional radical Islamist organization called the League of Believers.
Other faked material accused Moscow of a lack of support for Paleostinian armed nationalist groups, as opposed to China’s more outspoken backing, in an attempt to divide the two communist powers.
The IRD was shut down in 1977, but according to the report, the British government carried out similar disinformation operations for nearly another decade.
"The [new documents] are particularly significant as a precursor to more modern efforts of putting intelligence into the public domain," Cormac said.

Abu Akleh left for Jenin on Wednesday morning to cover festivities between Israeli troops and Paleostinian button men. She was shot in the head while wearing a press vest, with Israeli and Paleostinian authorities providing different accounts of who killed her.
Paleostinian witnesses and officials said Israeli soldiers killed Abu Akleh. Israeli officials at first said it was likely Paleostinian button men had mistakenly shot her, but later said errant Israeli sniper fire could also have caused her death.
Israel is insisting it cannot determine who shot her without examining the bullet removed from her neck, Channel 12 reported Friday, adding that Israel has asked the US for assistance in persuading the Paleostinian Authority to cooperate.
On Saturday, the Paleostinian Authority said that while international bodies could "participate" in the investigation, Israel would not be permitted to join the probe into Abu Akleh’s death.

[NYPost] Workers and shoppers described the chaos and carnage at the Tops supermarket in Buffalo when an 18-year-old opened fire at the store in what officials called a racially-motivated mass shooting on Saturday that left 10 people dead and three others injured.
The shooting sent those in the store fleeing for their lives outside of the nearest exit, or hiding in coolers. Several friends and family members of those who were at the store are awaiting any news of their loved ones hours later.
Officials have not yet released the names of the victims, but said 11 of those shot were black and two were white. One victim is a retired Buffalo police officer.
Shonnell Harris, an operation manager at the Tops, told The Buffalo News she heard 70 shots ring out in the market, which was “packed” with weekend shoppers.

A man suspected of killing 10 people in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday appeared to target Black Americans, in what authorities called "racially motived violent mostly peaceful extremism."
In an alleged manifesto posted online before the attack, Payton Gendron, 18, also directed intense hatred at Jews, expressed support for Nazism and subscribed to the antisemitic and racist Great Replacement conspiracy theory, which says Jews are plotting to replace white Americans with non-whites.
The 180-page manifesto circulating online included the alleged shooter’s name, described the attack plans and matched statements from law enforcement. Researchers from the Anti-Defamation League cited the document and said it wasn’t clear where it was first posted.
The manifesto attributed to Gendron was rooted in the white supremacist Great Replacement conspiracy theory, which says Jews are responsible for non-white immigration, and that non-whites will overwhelm and wipe out the white race.
Robert Bowers, who killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018, also cited the conspiracy theory before his attack. The white supremacist who killed one worshiper at a synagogue in Poway, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, said Jews were responsible for the genocide of "white Europeans."
The author of Saturday’s manifesto wrote that the shooting was meant to kill and intimidate non-whites and spread his ideas. He said he was mainly inspired by the shooter who killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019. He also named the Poway attacker, Bowers and other white supremacist mass shooters.
Gendron’s alleged manifesto closely resembled a document posted by the New Zealand shooter, and in some cases appeared to duplicate it, the ADL said.
He said he was acting alone, not affiliated with any particular group, and had been radicalized online starting in 2020. The author explicitly endorsed neo-Nazi ...adherents of a philosophy that was seen even at the time as pure evil, which makes them either consciously and purely evil, or attention-seeking ratbags. He said he had targeted Black people, but that Jews were "the biggest problem."
He said Black Americans were killing white people and taking public funding, and Jews were responsible, and that although he was targeting Black Americans, Jews "can be dealt with in time."
In the manifesto, Gendron allegedly called for a war between Jews and non-Jews.
"The real war I’m advocating for is the gentiles vs the Jews. We outnumber them 100x, and they are not strong by themselves," he wrote.
He also wrote that he was inspired to stream his attack online by another shooting that was broadcast on the platform Twitch for about 35 minutes, in a reference to the 2019 Halle Synagogue shooting in Germany, according to the ADL.
The ADL told The Times of Israel it was important for the public to know the alleged shooter’s motivations and be aware of the influence and danger of the Great Replacement theory.
Wearing a hospital gown, Gendron was arraigned in court Saturday evening on first-degree murder charges and ordered detained without bail. Another court hearing is scheduled for next week. He was being questioned on Saturday evening by the FBI.

[Rudaw] With drought and a lack of rainfall ravaging the country, Lake Hamrin, which once used to supply 80 percent of water to the people of Diyala province, has almost completely dried up.
Around 150,000 acres of farmland in the Hamrin area in northeastern Diyala province are on the brink of desertification, a dangerous development that may force myriads of locals to abandon their regions and seek work elsewhere in urban areas, according to local authorities.
"There was a lot of water here in the past that would reach the residential areas, and the sheep would drink water close to the households. The water has vanished and the sheep are thirsty. Nothing is left behind," Ali Jasim, a young shepherd, told Rudaw's Halkawt Aziz over the weekend.
Lake Hamrin is situated 55 kilometers northeast of Diyala's capital of Baqubah on the Alwand River. The water basin was opened in 1981 to protect the province from seasonal floods, soon becoming a strategic water reservoir in Diyala and capable of holding 2.4 billion cubic meters of water.
"By God, we have lost all we had in possession. You can no longer find a single farmer in this region because the lake has dried up. We used to make a living out of this water," said farmer Mohanad Khalid
Iraq's lakes are drying at an alarming rate. The country's second-largest lake, known as Milh or Razzaza lake, completely dried up in February.
Iraq's water resources ministry has previously warned that the country's water reserves have halved since last year.

A US district court issued an injunction on Friday partially blocking an Alabama law that criminalizes the prescription of hormone therapies and puberty blockers used to align transgender people's bodies with their gender identity.
The Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act came into effect in the southern state on May 8, not only banning medication treatments for gender dysphoria but also gender-affirming surgeries. Those convicted of violating the ban face up to 10 years in prison.
Judge Liles Burke left in place the latter part of the ban but ruled that the state had not been able to prove that medications used for transitioning were "experimental."
The injunction will remain in effect pending a trial to decide whether the law is in violation of the constitution.
UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAW
In his ruling, Burke said that "the uncontradicted evidence is that at least twenty-two major medical associations in the United States endorse transitioning medications as well-established, evidence-based treatments for gender dysphoria in minors."
These medical associations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Endocrine Society, called on Burke to block the Alabama law.
He said that the provisions in the law are likely unconstitutional. The US Department of Justice, as well as several families with transgender children, have challenged the law, calling it a violation of equal protection and free speech rights, as well as an intrusion into a family's right to make medical decisions.
"Parents have a fundamental right to direct the medical care of their children subject to accepted medical standards," Burke said, adding that "discrimination based on gender non-conformity equates to sex discrimination."
BACKLASH AGAINST TRANSGENDER RIGHTS
The law, introduced by Republican politicians in the traditionally conservative state, is part of an ongoing battle over the recognition of transgender rights in the US.
Another part of the law that was not blocked by Burke's injunction was the requirement for schools to inform parents if a child says that they think they are transgender.
A similar law in Arkansas was blocked before it could come into effect, while another law in Texas that allowed authorities to investigate parents of transgender children for so-called "child abuse" was blocked in March.

I am at a loss to see any way out of this mess w/o a new constituion, ie a new us govt. We need to start 'offing' these radicals or re-patriating them but we cannot live under their laws. we need a penumbra-less constitution.

Saja Bano, a friend of Dulari, said that the dear departed was her close friend and they would spent days together. "Her death is a great lost for the entire village. It’s a personal loss for me as I have lost my good friend," she said.
Subash Bhat, the son of Dulari, said that they are thankful to the Moslems of the area who stood with them in this hour of grief. "We have been living together and we didn’t flee Kashmir despite the fact that our father was killed in 90s. Since then, we have been living together with Moslems of the area, who are with us in time of this great loss," he said.
Chuni Lal Bhat, a relative of Dulari, while thanking the Moslems of Y K Pora, said that Kashmir is the "best example of communal harmony, brotherhood and Pandits and Moslems share a great and strong bond that has been there since decades". "Today, Moslems of the area stood with us and participated in the last rites of Dulari. They remained present till Dulari was cremated," he said, adding that "Moslems and Pandits are incomplete without each other."
Pertinently, Kashmiri Pandits are are protesting against the killing of Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit who was working at Tehsil office Chadoora, Budgam where he was shot on Thursday and died at SMHS Hospital Srinagar. The killing has sparked massive protests across Kashmir with migrant KPs demanding security and safe postings. Civil Society groups too have condemned the killing of Rahul and urged the KPs to strengthen the communal fabric in Kashmir.
The LG Manoj Sinha led administration has stated that killers of Bhat will have to pay a heavy price while as the divisional administration is working on to provide safe and security accommodation to the KPs working under Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package in Kashmir besides streamlining their postings.

As the news of Bhat's killing spread, Kashmiri migrants colonists living in the Sheikhpora colony staged a protest. Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Kashmir Range Vijay Kumar went to the colony to pacify them. Kashmiri Pandit employees in Mattan and Vesu in south Kashmir also staged protests against the killing.
The protesting employees also blocked the national highway and raised slogans against the administration for failing to stop assassinations. The IGP said Lateef Ahmed, a "recycled" terrorist, and new recruit Aqib Sher Gojri were the prime suspects behind the killing. "Raids are being conducted and I am sure we will be able to get them soon," he told PTI. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and political parties in Kashmir condemned Bhat's killing.
The dear departed constable identified as Reyaz Ahmad Choker was rushed to the local hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
Meanwhile the Kashmiri Pandits launched overnight protests following the killing of Bhat and demanded their safety.
Members of the community left their transit camps and blocked roads while raising slogans against Centre and BJP saying that they have been failed. There are over 4,000 Kashmiri Pandits who are living in transit camps in various parts of Kashmir.

Nevertheless, political developments in Afghanistan over the last nine months have shattered the previous government’s development plans, and the budget for carrying out those plans has been frozen for the past nine months.
Afghanistan faces a budget deficit of 44 billion Afghanis ($501 million) this financial year, the country’s Taliban authorities said on Saturday without clarifying how the gap between expected revenues and planned spending will be met.
Announcing the first annual national budget since the Taliban took over the war-torn country in August last year, Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi said the government foresaw spending of 231.4 billion Afghanis and domestic revenue of 186.7 billion.

[Rudaw] Three Kurdish-German politicians in a northwestern region in Germany are seeking to be elected as members of the parliament, as the state prepares to vote on the 18th round of its legislature on Sunday.
The region of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), regarded the most populous in Germany, is home to the largest Kurdish diaspora community in Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... and has good relations with the Kurdistan Region.
Twenty-nine parties will compete for 181 seats in the parliament, and the upcoming election is considered crucial for NRW’s Kurdish population, with three candidates being of Kurdish origin.
Berivan Aymaz, Serdar Yuksel, and Nasruddin Akay are three Kurdish-German politicians among the candidates running for NRW’s parliament. Yuksel and Aymaz are seeking re-election, while Akay hopes for first time election into the legislature.
Aymaz, 49, is the deputy of NRW’s Green Party and the bloc’s spokesperson for migration and foreign affairs. Born in eastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... (Bakur) and residing in the city of Cologne ...the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth populated city in Germany.... , Aymaz has been an MP of the NRW parliament since 2017.

Yuksel, 48, has been an active member of NRW’s Social Democratic Party since 1989, and their number one figure in the city of Bochum since 2001. Yuksel’s origins come from Bakur, but he was born in the city of Essen in Germany, and has been a member of the NRW parliament since 2010.
"We are now at a stage where great changes are occurring. There is a war, and we are constantly faced with issues of injustice which has made us very sad. The most important thing is to preserve the socialist state so that we don’t lose democracy and peace," Yuksel said.
The people of NRW highlighted the importance of the upcoming election for their region, and for the preservation of democracy as a whole.
"I will participate in the election process because I want democracy to live. Democracy survives when people go and vote. It is very important to me. I’m going to vote because I don’t want right-wing Lions of Islam to get more votes," social worker Natali Vogt told Rudaw.
The polls predict that the Green Party will see an almost 100% increase in their seats in the elections, while the social democrats are expected to maintain their wins from the previous elections and the Christian democrats are expected to lose many seats.
[KYIVINDEPENDENT] The perfect sunny spring morning in Donetsk Oblast was marred by the constant explosions going off every few minutes a dozen kilometers away.
The blasts were varied, coming from artillery and rocket barrages from both sides. A half-dozen soldiers held this outpost a short distance away from the front lines, north of the city of Sloviansk. Military cars hurried by, toward or away from the ongoing battle.
The woods seem packed with Ukrainian tanks, armored personnel carriers, artillery and other heavy weapons, concealed by the young green foliage.
Dark track marks could be seen on the paved roads, suddenly swerving into dirt furrows plunging into the woods. Driving through the forest, one can sometimes see the camouflaged outlines of the occasional Ukrainian combat vehicle, with servicemen resting, eating or being vigilant.
In a rare moment of silence, one could hear the hum of thousands of flies and mosquitoes hovering among the trees that cast dappled shadows onto the road. This was swiftly interrupted by violent mostly peaceful detonations in the distance.
"Minus one village," said one of the soldiers, turning his head in that direction.
The date was May 9, the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany during World War II, the last time Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... saw an offensive on such a large scale. Some expected the attacks to intensify for the occasion. But fighting’s been such a regular presence here since the war began that the holiday didn’t seem to come with a noteworthy escalation.
"The enemy is firing along the entire line of contact and trying to strike deep into the defenses of our troops," Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, a Ministry of Defense front man, said at a May 9 briefing.
"Well, it’s a special day for them," said one of the soldiers at the outpost. But another took a dismissive tone: "It’s been a special day for them for three months."
The Russian offensive in Donbas has bogged down, making at-best modest progress. While the soldiers at the outpost acknowledged that they’ve tactically withdrawn from at least one village recently, they continue to hold the line.
Since the latest Battle of the Donbas began, Russian forces have tried to execute a massive push along the highway leading from the city of Izium in Kharkiv Oblast to Slovyansk in Donetsk Oblast. It was supposed to link up with another push from the south and cut the Ukrainian forces off from their supply lines and the rest of the country. Over several weeks of fighting, the Russians advanced by no more than 20-30 kilometers along their attack axes.
Significant Russian forces remain north of the Siverskyi Donets River, which they are having trouble crossing, according to Volodymyr, a retired Ukrainian Lieutenant Colonel from Izium, who now lives in the city of Kramatorsk.
The southern banks of this river are considerably steeper than the northern banks, creating a difficult boundary, Volodymyr pointed out. This is especially apparent in the village of Bohorodychne, where a demolished bridge across the river sags into the water. The Ukrainian-held bank towers over its opposite, bristling with trees.
According to British Intelligence’s May 13 tweets, the Ukrainian forces are halting the Russians’ attempts to cross the river and forced them to take heavy losses during a fording attempt west of Sieverodonetsk.
"Images indicate that during the crossing of the Siverskyi Donets river... Russia lost significant armored maneuver elements of at least one Battalion Tactical Group," the British Intelligence statement read.
OSINT analyst Blue Sauron wrote that the Russians lost 73 combat vehicles.
The road into Bohorodychne is flanked by several plain, wooden orthodox crosses that look like they’ve been planted recently. "Eternal memory" one of them reads, the local version of the ’RIP’ placed on gravestones. "Save and protect us," says another.
A retiree named Volodymyr Semenets, sitting on the bench near his home in Bohorodychne, said the Ukrainian forces told him that Russians are unlikely to occupy this village, even though it practically straddles the line between the two opposing armies. Semenets hears daily exchanges of fire. Most munitions fly over the village but not all, as multiple broken windows and damaged houses can attest.
"This area is usually wreathed in smoke," Semenets said. "How could (the Russians) see what they are shooting at? They just shoot and that’s it."
Despite the danger, he and his wife refuse to abandon their property and animals for the uncertainty of western Ukraine. Humanitarian aid reaches them once a week, he said. Some other towns and villages along Russia’s attack path have it worse, with many cut off from regular supplies or medical professionals, said doctors in the city of Kramatorsk.
According to Brigadier General Oleksiy Hromov’s May 11 briefing, the town of Lyman is now seeing some of the region’s fiercest battles.
As they awaited their eventual turn in the meat grinder, soldiers smoked and discussed recent news, such as the visit to the country by actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie. One young soldier, nicknamed the Merry Milkman for his love of condensed milk, said that rather than munching croissants in Lviv, Jolie should come to hang out at their checkpoint.
"Isn’t she a little old for you?" quipped one of his fellows. "Are you going to be chasing pensioners next?"
Another soldier asked if it’s true that Russian President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances... is severely ill. Everyone’s seen the Russian leader clutching furniture, limping, coughing and being covered with a blanket in his recent video appearances. But Putin’s proximity to death’s door is not something this journalist could confidently confirm — only hope he’s getting there quickly.

The cold war has returned. The red line Putin has drawn is no liberal minded woke response. He will follow thru on his concerns. China and many other countries are right there with him. I see no extensive support or coordination offered to return balance. It appears to me to be very unbalanced at this time. Money and the tools of war will not win against true power developing on the side of nationalism. Think about it. Western countries divided internally. Nationalism is fading fast. The glue that holds a country together.

[NYPOST] It’s not every day that an 8-foot alligator comes to visit you at your front door. Well, maybe in Florida it is.
It was not the doormat Ed Ferraro was expecting Wednesday afternoon when he walked out of his home in Odessa. He heard a rattling at the front door and assumed it was some sort of package delivery. But that was far from the truth.
"I got up, and I went out there to go check on what it was, and fortunately, I cracked my blinds. I just looked out there, and I saw this monster alligator on my front porch," Ferraro said. "It definitely freaked me out. It’s not something you see every day."
He initially thought the giant reptile was fake, and he was simply the victim of a prank.
"But I then I started looking at it. I’m like, ’Oh no, this is definitely a real, very real thing. I was just completely dumbfounded," he said.
Thankfully, a neighbor driving by stopped her car and was on the phone with neighborhood security guards, who ended up contacting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The area was soon cordoned off to prevent any unsuspecting joggers or dog walkers from having a face-to-face encounter.
Ferraro said they occasionally see gators in their neighborhood’s lakes and ponds, but they really don’t venture near people.
"Apparently this one had come from across the street. Why the alligator crossed the road? I do not know," he joked.
Ferraro assumed the gator needed a place for shade to cool off. Temperatures at time were about 85 degrees. And before the trapper could even get to his home, the gator got up and moseyed back into the lake. And that was it.
"I had a bird fly into my house one time and that was a whole other experience and never anything even close to this," Ferraro said. "They kind of tend to keep their distance from the people in this neighborhood. They actually restock the lakes with fish to make sure that the gators have more than enough food so they don’t have to go after small pets," Ferraro said.
State officials say an alligator is considered a nuisance if it’s at least 4 feet in length and believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property.

Though the decision came into effect from Thursday, most madrassas in the state had remained closed due to low attendance of children on the first day of classes after the end of Ramzan holidays.
Friday is a holiday in most of the madrassas, but in those that were open, 'Jana Gana Mana' was sung as part of the morning prayers, the reports said.
"The government wants the students of madrassas to remember that legacy forever. When they sing the national anthem in the morning, the nation will be strengthened," the state's Minister of State for Minority Welfare Danish Azad Ansari told PTI.
Also, it will remind the children and their families that they are the conquered, not the conquerers, hopefully for the betterment of their manners.
"Its purpose is to further promote the feeling of patriotism among the children studying in madrasas," he said, adding that madrassas played an important role in the country's Independence.
According to reports received from the Moslem-dominated Saharanpur district, minority welfare officer Bharat Lal Gond said all the students and teachers in the madrassas that were opened sang the national anthem "with enthusiasm".
In Badaun, 'Jana Gana Mana' was sung during the morning prayers, and teachers explained the national anthem's importance to the children.
Rashid Khan, director of Madrassa Hikmat Khan, said the national anthem has already been sung in madrassas on Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti.
"This country belongs to all and the national anthem is a symbol of the country's honour. There is no objection by any madrassa in singing it. They have always respected the national anthem," Khan said.
Gorakhpur district minority welfare officer Ashutosh Pandey said most of the 243 madrassas sang the national anthem along with the traditional prayers in the morning.
Diwan Sahab Zaman Khan, General Secretary of Teachers' Association Madaris Arabia, said Hamd (praises to Allah) and Salam (salutations to Muhammad) used to be recited before the start of classes in madrassas until now.
"In some places, the national anthem was also sung but it was not compulsory. Now it is." [NYPOST] Ukraine "appears to have won the Battle of Kharkiv," a US think tank said.
The Russian military has withdrawn from its positions around Ukraine’s second-largest city "in the face of Ukrainian counteroffensives and the limited availability of reinforcements," said the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Russian units were unable to hold ground against the Ukrainian fighters over the past several days, the ISW said, and were prevented from encircling the city in northeast Ukraine.
As they retreated, however, they continued to bombard the eastern Donetsk province in order to "deplete Ukrainian forces and destroy fortifications," the Ukrainian military said Saturday.
Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said the country was "entering a new — long-term — phase of the war."
The comments came two days after a major Ukranian victory at the Siverskiy Donets River, an area about 25 miles east of Kharkiv which Russia previously controlled. The battle ended with Russian tanks and other destroyed equipment littering the area around the river.

He now predicts Ukraine will not only drive Russia out, but reclaim both the eastern breakaway regions known as the Donbas and the Crimea, which Russia seized in 2014.

[KYIVINDEPENDENT] Moldova’s Russian-occupied Transnistria region is becoming a new focal point in Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Tensions have been rising over the fate of the breakaway republic after several explosions have been reported in Transnistria, which lorussical Russian-led authorities claimed were attacks by Ukraine.
One theory is that Russia may try to use its stronghold in Transnistria to either launch an attack against Ukraine from the west, opening a second front, or divert the Ukrainian army’s attention from the more important battle for Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
Russia may also be trying to destabilize Moldova and discredit its pro-Western President Maia Sandu. A related purpose would be to send a signal to Romania, a NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants... member and Moldova’s strongest backer in the West.
Transnistria, populated by Moldovans, Ukrainians and Russians, proclaimed independence in 1991 but it has not been recognized by any state. Russia, which backed Transnistria, invaded Moldova in 1992 and permanently deployed troops in the breakaway region. INCIDENTS

On April 26, the proxies said that radio antennas had been blown up in the town of Mayak in Transnistria. The towers were used to broadcast Russian radio.
The proxies also said that a military base in the village of Parkany had been attacked.
As a result, Transnistria raised its terrorism threat level to "red." Ukraine’s military intelligence claimed that Transnistria had also started military training as part of future mobilization.

I'm definitely not here to shill for the Russians; but this article isn't historically accurate. If I may make a few points?
1) The Russians didn't "invade" Transnistria. There was a Soviet military base (basically a giant ammo dump) there when Moldova was an SSR. The Russian successor government kept it, and also support the Transnistrians, who are basically Russians.
2) There was a nasty little civil war there between 1990-1992. You can read about it here. Transnistria is (or was) the heavily industrialized region of Moldova, and mostly Russian. Moldova was talking about joining Romania, as Moldovans are basically Romanians. The Russians/Transnistrians weren't down with that. Hence, a thirty year stalemate.
3)The Moldovans, Transnistrians, and Russians together run something called the Joint Control Commission to oversea the Transnitrian/Moldovan border and keep things calm. You can read about it here. It's not perfect. But nobody's sons have come home in body bags for thirty years.
The Kyiv Independent isn't being very independent when it comes to specifically this topic.

The remains of the dead are often kept in a special annex of the cemetery church.
Greece is a predominantly Orthodox Christian country, and Moslem cemeteries can only be found in Thrace, a region in the northeast of the country near the Greek-Ottoman Turkish border, 750 kilometres from Athens.
The area is home to a centuries-old Moslem minority, a legacy of the Ottoman Empire's presence in the area.
In Athens, the number of Moslems used to be negligible, but this has changed in the wake of the 2015 refugee crisis.
There are now about half-a-million Moslems in the Greek capital after successive migration waves and the arrival of thousands of families from the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian subcontinent fleeing war and poverty.

How old is this propaganda piece? I recall seeing recent pictures of the destruction of Russian landing craft and equipment on it, and bomb/ missile impacts on the Russian occupation forces on that island.
The battles are getting insane. The other day the Russians lost everything and every one on Snake Island 7 times and reoccupied and equipped each time. So 8 separate sets of troops and equipment in one day.
Snake Island also controls access to known unexploited oil and gas fields in the NW Black Sea.
No buildings remain on the island.

Fun! Nobody expects Americans to understand those funny words foreigners speak, so there’s innocent amusement to be found in speaking one of the uncommon ones like Ukrainian.
Part of the reason trailing daughter #2 studied Japanese was for the advantage it would give her in business meetings later, and so it has. We discovered this in reverse long ago, when it was brought to our attention that in Cincinnati there are enough German speakers that one will inevitably be nearby when one of the tds made a childish observation about the people around us at the grocery store in that language.
Those losses are nothing new for the Russian Army in modern times. They will send troops to a meat grinder until resistance ends.
That was all very well when Russia/the Soviet Union had a huge army with a large number of youths growing up to replace the fallen, and ditto for supplies. When supplies and soldiers are limited, replacing the fallen and the destroyed becomes the limiting factor.
Granted that the Ukraine has a similar manpower replacement issue, so should I understand this as a question of who last runs out of meat for the grinder?

One of my uncles immigrated from Germany. He would not teach his kids German because "we are Americans". Then one went to Germany for work, had kids, and that uncle has grandkids who speak German.

My father pulled the same thing about German, Rob — it was one of the two languages my parents had in common, the other being English. And though he saw to it that we all were taught Hebrew — first private tutors, then afternoon Hebrew school — he never used that to converse with us, though he did with the Israelis on the Hebrew school staff. Daddy was a typical math/science type: languages are for efficient communication, not for enjoying or improving. He was pleased that we and the trailing daughters became fluent German speakers over there, though he thought moving to Germany a bad idea. Unforgiving type, my father, but then he was among other things Israeli, not German.
