Bill Introduced That Could Solve the Baby Formula Shortage

#1  Domestic baby formula production is one of the most regulated and subsidized products in America, distorting the market so grotesquely that it has centralized around just a few companies, essentially an oligopoly. This crony capitalist market concentration left the supply vulnerable when Abbott, one of the manufacturers, had to issue a recall due to a potential contamination issue. (Which the Food and Drug Administration was warned about months in advance and did nothing about).

Didn't realize it was so constrained. Almost like it is a prescription drug.

Rider Abandons Giro d'Italia After Hitting Self In Eye With Champagne Cork
Poor bastard - his first big win in a Grand Tour and he hits himself in the eye with the cork from the celebration champagne bottle. First time I've ever heard something like that.

Biniam Girmay's celebrations on the podium after winning stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia have turned out to be race ending, with the Eritrean confirming on Wednesday morning that he won't be lining up for stage 11.

On Tuesday, Girmay was opening the traditional large bottle of sparkling wine during the podium ceremony when the cork flew out and hit his left eye. According to a statement from the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux team, he has suffered a hemorrhage in the anterior chamber of the left eye.

Girmay was assessed on the scene in Jesi and taken to hospital for checks before returning to his team’s hotel to celebrate his victory, although a decision on his continued participation in the Giro was scheduled for the following morning.

Congress takes all the fun out of UFOs ‐ I smell coverup!
[NYP] UFO sightings were a fringe thing in the ’60s, a fun mainstream pursuit in the ’70s (a friend of mine staged one with a frisbee and a camera that produced a suitably grainy black-and-white image that could have been used on "In Search Of" and probably was) and took a regrettable detour into an obsession with alien body-cavity exploration techniques in the ’80s.

At the moment when the public decided aliens from the Fleepgort Star System probably didn’t travel 11 million miles to rummage around in the bodily orifices of National Enquirer readers, the UFO industry went the way of the "Star Trek" convention, and became a laughingstock. Those among us who still cared in the ’90s continued to get information from a documentary series called "The X-Files," but otherwise things were pretty quiet on the spaceman beat.

On Tuesday, Congress held a hearing on UFOs, now known as Unexplained Aerial Phenomena so people won’t giggle as much, for the first time in 50 years: finally, a stimulus package for the imagination! (And one that didn’t cost anything much.) In opening statements, Congressmen assured us that this is a really serious subject, y’all, and there was to be no joking around, nor was anyone to call

Africa Subsaharan
Radical Boko Haram Preacher And Terrorist Recruiter, Ari-Difinoma, Reportedly Surrenders To Nigerian Army
[SaharaReporters] The leader of the Jama’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihad (JAS), popularly known as the Boko Haram
...not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
terrorist group, Alhaji Ari-Difinoma, has reportedly surrendered to the Nigerian Army.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad, reported that the radical preacher surrendered to the troops of 21 Special Armoured Brigade Bama, Operation Hadin Kai, on Monday, May 16, 2022, after he was forced out of his hideout following sustained bombardment by troops of Operation Hadin Kai.

Daily Post also reports intensified infighting between Boko Haram and its rival faction, the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of the West African Province (ISWAP).

Zagazola noted that ISWAP holy warriors had launched a surprise attack against Boko Haram at Ukuba, a camp that had been repeatedly destroyed by the Nigerian troops but reoccupied by the terrorists, forcing Boko Haram fighters to flee.
Sources told Zagazola that Ari-Difinoma and others ran to hide in a small village located in Mantari village, within the axis of Bama Local Government Area, but were forced out of their hideout by hunger and unending artillery bombardments by the Nigerian troops.

"It was at that point that Mr Ari-Difinoma decided to abandon the rest of his colleagues and ran out to surrender himself," he said.

Alhaji Ari-Difinoma, who is an indigene of Monguno in Borno State, ran one of the radicalisation schools in Ukuba camp in Sambisa Forest under the Darul-Qur’an. He has reportedly recruited many children and youths through his teaching of turban ideologies in the past 10 years.

Terrorists Abduct 30 Passengers Along Abuja-Kaduna Highway, Shoot Others
[SaharaReporters] At least, 30 passengers have been kidnapped by forces of Evil along the Abuja-Kaduna highway, SaharaReporters learnt.

An unspecified number of persons were said to have been shot during the attack.

The attack came barely two months after bandidos derailed a Kaduna-bound train, killing scores and kidnapping several persons including pregnant women, some of whom are still in captivity.

The attack reportedly happened around 4:30 pm on Tuesday, leaving many injured, including women and kiddies.

"The victims were writhing in pain by the roadside while cars were parked on the highway," a source said.

Passengers of a Zamfara State Transport Authority 18-seater bus, one Peugeot 406, two Toyota Corolla, a Golf car, and several other vehicles were attacked by the terrorists.

The forces of Evil had left the scene before the arrival of security operatives, a source informed.

Three men sentenced to jail and fined for wading with bears in Alaska
[USA Today] Three men who left the safety of a viewing platform to wade into the river to photograph brown bears at the famous Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park in Alaska were sentenced to jail and each fined $3,000.

"These individuals behaved carelessly and put themselves at great risk," Mark Sturm, superintendent of Katmai National Park and Preserve, stated in a press release. "Brown bears are fierce, territorial predators, especially when concentrated in order to feed on migrating salmon. Things could have easily ended very badly."

Brooks Falls is located on the Brooks River and is a popular summer destination to view salmon leaping over the 6-foot falls as bears congregate and feed on them, sometimes catching the salmon in mid-air.

Prosecutors seek jail term for Capitol rioter who wore ‘Camp Auschwitz’ sweatshirt
[IsraelTimes] Robert Keith Packer told FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
agents he wore antisemitic sweatshirt "because he was cold,’ expressed no remorse for taking part in storming of US Capitol

Federal prosecutors on Monday recommended a prison sentence of more than two months for a Virginia man who stormed the US Capitol wearing a "Camp Auschwitz" sweatshirt.

Photographs of Robert Keith Packer wearing the sweatshirt with the antisemitic message went viral after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. When FBI agents asked him why he wore the sweatshirt, he "fatuously" replied "because I was cold," prosecutors said in their sentencing memo.

"Without expressing any remorse for being part of the rioting that day, Packer continually said it was ’hard to tell’ which side people were on," prosecutors wrote.

More than 100 coppers were maimed when a mob of Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
supporters attacked the Capitol while Congress was holding a joint session to certify President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S., who gives the term geriatric a bad name. He blames Afghans for losing Afghanistan....
’s 2020 electoral victory.

US District Judge Carl Nichols is scheduled to sentence Packer on May 23. He faces a maximum sentence of six months imprisonment after pleading guilty in January to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

Prosecutors asked Nichols to sentence Packer to 75 days of incarceration followed by three years of probation and 60 hours of community service.

The words "Camp Auschwitz" were above an image of a human skull on Packer’s sweatshirt. It also bore the phrase "Work Brings Freedom," a rough translation of the German words above the entrance gate to Auschwitz, the concentration camp in Poland where Nazis killed more than 1 million men, women and kiddies.

Packer, 57, of Newport News, Virginia, is a self-employed pipe fitter and a nonlicensed plumber. Prosecutors say he has a lengthy criminal record, with approximately 21 convictions, mostly for drunken driving and other motor vehicle violations.

Packer told the FBI that he was about 10 to 12 feet away from a rioter, Ashli Babbitt, when a police officer fatally shot her.

"He told the agents he heard the shot and saw her fall back from the window she was trying to climb through," prosecutors wrote.

FBI agents arrested Packer a week after the riot. He has remained free pending his sentencing hearing.

Packer was evasive and minimized his actions when FBI agents interviewed him, according to prosecutors.

"He was more interested in relaying how he received hate mail and how he was ’hounded’ by the media for interviews," they wrote.

IDF says it downed Hezbollah drone that entered Israeli airspace amid major drill
[IsraelTimes] Military says air control units tracked the aircraft ’throughout the incident’; model appears to be commercially available Chinese-made quadcopter

Israeli troops downed a drone belonging to the Hezbollah terror group on Tuesday after it entered Israeli airspace from Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady days of human sacrifice to Baal Moloch...
, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The incident occurred as the military was holding a wide-scale monthlong drill called Chariots of Fire. During the past week, the exercise focused on training for fighting on Israel’s northern front, including against Hezbollah. On Tuesday, the military will be holding one such exercise in the northern city of Haifa.

A statement from the Israel Defense Forces said air control units tracked the unmanned aircraft "throughout the incident" before taking it down.

A picture of the drone released by the military showed a small quadcopter that appeared to be a commercially available model manufactured by Chinese company DJI.

It did not specify how it was brought down as it entered Israeli airspace.

"The IDF will continue to operate in order to prevent any attempt to violate Israeli illusory sovereignty," the statement said.

There was no immediate statement from Hezbollah or affiliated media outlets on the drone downing.

Palestinian tries to stab soldier in northern West Bank, is shot by troops, IDF says
[IsraelTimes] Assailant ’neutralized’ near HQ of regional military brigade; no soldiers hurt, no word on attacker’s condition; video shows man approaching 2 soldiers, apparently with knife drawn

A Paleostinian tried to stab an Israeli soldier in the northern West Bank on Tuesday morning before being shot by troops on the scene, the military said.

The Israel Defense Forces said it received reports of a stabbing attempt near the headquarters of the Samaria Regional Brigade.

"A terrorist armed with a knife began running toward soldiers guarding the area, the fighters responded with gunfire," the military said in a statement, adding that the assailant had been "neutralized."

There was no immediate word on his condition.

No troops were hurt.

Surveillance footage appeared to show a man running toward two soldiers. Reports said he was holding a knife in his hand.

The man came within a few yards of the troops before they apparently shot him.

Images from the scene showed several soldiers standing around a person lying on the ground.

"The order is clear — strike the turbans wherever they are, with all types of weaponry," Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said later in the day after meeting with IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi and other senior commanders at a military base in the West Bank.

"Whoever raises a hand against an Israeli citizen or soldier will have his blood on his head," the premier added.

Pentagon clears officer over 2019 Syria strike that killed civilians
[IsraelTimes] Defense Department rejects NYT report that military covered up deaths of civilians in attack on Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
stronghold, says troops thought only fighters were in the area

An investigation into a 2019 strike by US forces in Syria that killed numerous civilians found no violations of policy or wanton negligence, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The internal US Army investigation focused on an operation by a special US force operating in Syria which launched an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
on an Islamic State bastion in Baghouz on March 18, 2019.

The investigation was sparked last year after the New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reported that in the original strike the US military had covered up dozens of non-combatant deaths. The Times report said that 70 people, many of them women and kiddies, had been killed in the strike.

The Times report said a US legal officer "flagged the strike as a possible war crime" and that "at nearly every step, the military made moves that concealed the catastrophic strike."

But the final report of the investigation rejected that conclusion Tuesday. It said that the US ground force commander for the anti-Islamic State coalition received a request for airstrike support from Syrian Democratic Forces fighting the bully boys.

The commander "received confirmation that no civilians were in the strike area" and authorized the strike. However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
they later found out there were civilians at the location.

"No Rules of Engagement or Law of War violations occurred," the investigation said.

In addition, the commander "did not deliberately or with wanton disregard cause civilian casualties," it said.

The report said that "administrative deficiencies" delayed US military reporting on the strike, giving the impression that it was being covered up.

The Times cited an initial assessment of the incident saying that about 70 civilians could have been killed. Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby said that 52 combatants were killed, 51 of them adult males and one child, while four civilians died, one woman and three children.

Another 15 civilians, 11 women and four children, were maimed, he said.

Asked if anyone was being punished for the civilian deaths, Kirby said the investigation did not find the need to hold any individuals accountable. The probe "did not find that anybody acted outside the law of war, that there was no malicious intent," Kirby said.

"While we don’t always get everything right, we do try to improve. We do try to be as transparent as we can about what we learn," he said.

More normalcy. thanks to the work of President Trump and despite the despite of President Biden.
[IsraelTimes] Renewal of ties comes after agreements in 2019 between former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the late Chadian president Idriss Deby Itno.

Ben Bourgel, the non-resident ambassador to a host of African nations including Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...

... The Gambia is actually surrounded by The Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...
and Guinea, presented his credentials to Chad President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.

"This marks an important benchmark in the deepening of the relations between Chad and Israel since their resumption in 2019," tweeted the Israeli Embassy in Senegal. "Ambassador Bourgel and his team will work to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in areas of common interest such as climate change, agriculture, water management and health."

Israel and Chad announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations in January 2019, after Chad severed ties with Israel in 1972 due to pressure from Libyan strongman Muammar Qadaffy
...Proof that a madman with money will be politely received for at least 42 years until his people get tired of him and kill him...
. Former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with former Chad president Idriss Deby Itno to agree on increasing bilateral cooperation as well.

The following year, there were mixed reports on whether Chad would establish a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem. Israel said that a bigwig from Chad had indicated his country was willing to open an official diplomatic mission in Jerusalem. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
the Al Jazeera Arabic news network quoted the Chad Foreign Ministry as denying the move.

Deby, who ruled the central African nation for more than three decades, was killed last year on the battlefield in a fight against rebels. His son replaced him as Chad’s president.

Secretary Mayorkas: Title 42 Going Away Does Not Mean the Border Is Open
[Townhall] Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas assured the American people on Tuesday during a visit to the Rio Grande Valley that his agency is preparing for the expected influx of illegal immigrants if Title 42 officially goes away next Monday.

While still slated to end on May 23, a judge will make a determination whether Title 42 stays or goes as part of a lawsuit that was filed to keep it in place.

"We are preparing for the end of Title 42 based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decision. That does not mean that the border is open beginning on May 23. We continue to enforce the laws of this country. We continue to remove individuals who do not qualify for relief under the laws of this country," Mayorkas explained.

Mayorkas said once Title 42 is removed, they will be able to put punishments on individuals who illegally cross the southern border and do not qualify for asylum, instead of rapid expulsion that does not carry any penalties.

When a reporter asked what message he hoped to send to migrants with the day's event, Mayorkas said the message is to not trust the smugglers.

Canceled: Senate Dems Nix ‘Disinformation' Hearing After Embarrassing Jankowicz Videos Surface
[Free Beacon] Senate Democrats abruptly canceled a hearing at which President Joe Biden's new disinformation czar Nina Jankowicz was expected to testify, a decision made after embarrassing videos posted by the self-proclaimed "Mary Poppins of disinformation" sparked a political firestorm.

Senate Democrats planned to hold a May 10 hearing on "disinformation, misinformation, and malinformation," just a couple of weeks after Biden tapped Jankowicz to head his administration's newly created Disinformation Governance Board. Democratic leaders were reluctant to have Jankowicz face Republican questioning, however, prompting them to nix the hearing, three Senate offices told the Washington Free Beacon.

"They yanked it when the entire ’disinformation board' blew up," one senior aide told the Free Beacon. "They realized there's no way they could reschedule without Nina Jankowicz being called to testify."

The Senate's Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee had the hearing scheduled since April, but the optics of the hearing in light of Jankowicz's negative press led to its abrupt cancellation. Such hearings are normally sleepy events on Capitol Hill, but the controversy surrounding Jankowicz would have made the hearing a spectacle. The hearing would have been an opportunity for Republicans to question not only Jankowicz but also the creation of the board in the first place. The administration has refused to answer questions about its decision to give the disinformation post to Jankowicz, who has drawn criticism for falsely labeling Hunter Biden's laptop a "Russian influence op" and for her flamboyant TikTok videos.

Canceling Senate hearings on such short notice is out of the ordinary and typically does not happen unless a witness or expert falls ill or has a last-minute scheduling conflict. The disinformation hearing, according to multiple Senate offices, had been scheduled since early April and was planned for May 10.

‘We Gotta Be Competitive Here': Elon Musk Issues Dire Warning About The Rise Of China, Pushes Back Against Corporate Wokeness
[WIRE] Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk issued a warning on Monday about the rising economic power of China — and how the United States can remain competitive.

During an interview with the "All In" podcast, the world’s richest man said that Americans must "stop the infighting" amid the growing hegemony of China.

"What we’re going to see with China, for the first time that anyone can remember who is alive, is an economy that is twice the size of the U.S., possibly three times the size of the U.S., and it’s going to be very weird living in that world," Musk explained, as reported by Fox Business. "So, we better stop the infighting in the U.S. and stop punching ourselves in the face. There’s way too much of America punching itself in the damn face, it’s just dumb, and think about, hey, ’We gotta be competitive here.’"

With $23 trillion in economic output last year, the United States presently boasts the world’s largest economy. However, China — which boasts a $17.7 trillion economy and has averaged 10% annual GDP growth since 1978 — continues to expand its consumer sector and draw attention from businesses in the Western world.

"There’s a new kid on the block that’s going to be two to three times our size," Musk warned. "We better step up our game and stop infighting."

Amid the rise of China, Musk urged American businesses to stand down from political controversies. "The point of a company is to produce useful products and services for your fellow human beings," Musk said. "It is not some political gathering place."

Tucker Carlson Responds to Claims That He Inspired Buffalo Shooter
[PJ] In the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, the political left (and several RINOs) rushed to blame conservatives, Fox News, and even Tucker Carlson specifically for radicalizing the shooter.

This, of course, goes against the shooter’s alleged manifesto, in which he describes himself as a former communist who now falls in the "mild-moderate authoritarian left category."

But that hasn’t stopped the radical left and its allies from playing the "Blame Fox News" and "Blame Tucker Carlson" cards.

And Carlson responded Monday evening on his show.

"You’ve probably heard this document described as a racist manifesto, but that’s not quite right," Carlson noted. "It’s definitely racist, bitterly so. Gendron reduces people to their skin color. That’s the essence of racism, and it’s immoral. But what he wrote does not add up to a manifesto. It is not a blueprint for a new extremist political movement, much less the potential inspiration for a racist revolution. Anyone who claims that it is is lying or hasn’t read it. Instead, Gendron’s letter is a rambling pastiche of slogans and internet memes, some of which flatly contradict one another."

"The document is not recognizably left-wing or right-wing. It’s not really political at all. The document is crazy," Carlson correctly observed. "It’s the product of a diseased and organized mind. At one point Gendron suggests that Fox News is part of some global conspiracy against him. He writes like the mental patient he is. Disjointed. Irrational. Paranoid."

Iran announces production of new military drone in Tajikistan
[IsraelTimes] Dubbed Ababil-2, Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
says aircraft can carry out attacks from a range of 200 kilometers; move seen as effort to balance power in the region

Iran said Tuesday it inaugurated a production line for manufacturing a new military drone in Tajikistan, a first for both nations.

A report by the official IRNA news agency said the ceremony took place during a visit to the Central Asian nation by Gen. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces.

The move is seen as an effort by Iran to address the balance of power in the region: Afghanistan under its Sunni Moslem Taliban

rulers poses a threat to its two neighbors, predominantly Shiite Iran and secular Tajikistan.

The report said the drone is dubbed the Ababil-2 after a bird in the Koran. It is capable of carrying out attacks as well as surveillance missions from a range of 200 kilometers (124 miles), the report said.

It did not reveal other details such as the capacity of the production line.

The announcement marks the first time that Iran has launched a military production line abroad.

Iran’s drone fleet is believed to have taken a serious blow in mid-February following an attack on an airbase near Kermanshah, in Western Iran, that destroyed hundreds of drones. Tehran officials have blamed Israel for the attack.

Israel has repeatedly warned that Iranian drones are a significant threat to the region — especially as Tehran arms proxies stationed along Israel’s borders.

In March, Israeli military officials said that Iran’s "UAV terror" is a new and global issue, accusing Tehran of directly attacking both military and civilian targets in the Middle East.

The IDF believes Iran is attempting to arm all of its proxies in the region — in Syria, Lebanon Hezbollahstan

US sues casino mogul 'Republican' Steve Wynn to compel him to register as an agent of China
[Guardian] The US Department of Justice on Tuesday sued Steve Wynn, the billionaire former casino mogul and senior Republican fund raiser, to compel him to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act as an agent of China.

The department said Wynn, 80, had contacted then-US president Donald Trump and members of his Republican administration in 2017 to convey China’s request to cancel the visa of or otherwise remove a Chinese businessperson who had sought political asylum in the United States.

In a statement the Department of Justice said it was seeking to compel Wynn to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (Fara) as the agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and a senior official of the PRC’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

"The filing of this suit — the first affirmative civil lawsuit under Fara in more than three decades — demonstrates the department’s commitment to ensuring transparency in our democratic system," said assistant attorney general Matthew Olsen of the justice department’s national security division. "Where a foreign government uses an American as its agent to influence policy decisions in the United States, Fara gives the American people a right to know."

Hunter Biden-Linked Firm Admits To Foreign Lobbying
[Free Beacon] A Democratic consulting firm linked to Hunter Biden registered with the Department of Justice as a foreign agent of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.

The founders of Blue Star Strategies said in filings under the Foreign Agents Registration Act that they arranged two meetings in 2016 between State Department officials and an attorney of Burisma owner Nikolai Zlochevsky. The founders of the firm, Sally Painter and Karen Tramontano, sought to assess the government's position towards Zlochevsky, who was under an international bribery investigation. They began working for Burisma in late 2015 after an introduction from Hunter Biden. Biden's work for the scandal-plagued Burisma drew scrutiny at the time because his father served as the United States' government's chief liaison to Ukraine.

The filing could mark a significant development in a federal investigation into Biden and his cronies' foreign business dealings. Federal prosecutors are reportedly probing Hunter Biden's work in Ukraine and China. Prosecutors have also reportedly investigated whether Painter and Tramontano, who served in the Clinton administration, violated foreign agent laws by failing to disclose their work for Burisma.

Biden, who joined Burisma's board in April 2014, has claimed his job was to advise the company on international energy deals. But emails from his abandoned laptop show he played a key role in Burisma's public relations efforts in the West. Biden served as the middleman between Burisma and Blue Star for a consulting deal to burnish Burisma's reputation in the eyes of U.S. government officials.

Blue Star's retroactive foreign agent disclosure could be related to the looming federal investigation, or even be part of a settlement deal with prosecutors. The firm said it is registering its work for Burisma "pursuant to guidance from Department of Justice personnel."

According to the foreign agent filing, Blue Star Strategies set up meetings for Zlochevsky's lawyer and State Department officials Amos Hochstein and Catherine Novelli to discuss the United States government's position towards Zlochevsky.

Painter and Tramontano later helped Burisma's public relations efforts by arranging a partnership with Atlantic Council, one of Washington's top foreign policy think tanks. Burisma paid Atlantic Council $300,000 beginning in 2017 to host policy events for the energy company. The think tank entered the partnership despite warnings from State Department officials regarding Burisma's negative reputation.

23:08 Arestovich on the evacuation from Azovstal: "There is a solution, which is that while the operation is underway, we do not comment. Everything is too fragile there, and one careless word can bring everything down. We will not substitute the guys and girls. 23:05 Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin visited the occupied Kherson region and said that it "has great prospects, the region will take its rightful place in the Russian family."

23:02 The Russian army went on the defensive along the entire section from Kherson to Kharkov. The only place where they still do not do this is the Izyum and Lugansk directions, Arestovich said. According to him, the occupants are trying to reach areas that are more convenient to defend - mainly hills, settlements and natural boundaries such as rivers, ravines. They began to dig very actively, added the adviser to the head of the OP.

22:57 Elizabeth II in a yellow and blue outfit opened a new line of London Station

21:56 The Russians are trying to make a breakthrough in the Popasnaya area and in the Severodonetsk direction, said the head of the Lugansk OVA, Sergei Gaidai. According to him, Severodonetsk, Gorskaya hromada and the Lisichansk-Bakhmut highway are under constant shelling. However, the evacuation along this route continues.

Gaidai also said that new attempts by the Russians are expected to cross the Seversky Donets near Belogorovka and cut the Lisichansk-Bakhmut highway at this point, which is the only route connecting the Lisichansk-Severodonetsk agglomeration with the Donetsk region.

21:51 The founder of the Azov Regiment, the leader of the National Corps party, Andriy Beletsky, said that he was in contact with the Ukrainian defenders of Azovstal, and asked not to comment on their evacuation: “The main thing now is not to harm with your conjectures, ideas, any insiders of the rescue operation itself Therefore, I have a big request to everyone who wants to share their thoughts about what is happening at Azovstal, or to those who have some kind of "secrets", "insiders" and want to share these "insiders" with the whole world, - keep them to yourself, as well as your opinions. In two or three days, I think that the garrison itself will prove it, make it clear how everything went."

21:37 Russia can beat the world record for the loss of an army that invaded the territory of another country, Borrell said at a briefing after a meeting of the EU Council.

21:33 Despite the ongoing war, the EU is already developing a plan for the restoration of Ukraine, writes Sueddeutsche Zeitung. According to the draft document, the allocation of funds will be strictly monitored for corruption and the efforts of the Ukrainian government to carry out reforms. Such reforms should bring the country closer to the EU. According to the document, the reconstruction of Ukraine may take more than ten years. At the same time, the principle of "doing better than it was" should be applied, which will include concern for the climate.

21:26 Because of the destroyed water supply system, Mariupol is threatened with the spread of infectious diseases, including cholera, said Dorit Nitzan, Regional Director for Emergency Situations of the WHO. According to her, WHO is preparing cholera kits and vaccines, and is also collaborating with other non-governmental organizations to help residents in the occupied territory.

According to her, the water supply in Mariupol has been "partially restored", but many pipelines have been destroyed: "It's just a swamp on the streets, and sewage water is mixed with drinking water. This is a huge danger of the spread of many infections, including cholera. We remember that before 2011 there were cases of cholera in Mariupol, and we are getting ready."

21:18 The Cabinet of Ministers has expanded the list of citizens who can qualify for monthly payments of 2,200-2,500 hryvnias from international humanitarian organizations, Shmyhal said. Previously, such payments were provided only to internally displaced persons from among the most vulnerable social categories, and now Ukrainians from the de-occupied territories, settlements located in the zone of active hostilities, as well as citizens in the temporarily occupied territory will be able to receive them.

21:09 Budapest is ready to be a mediator in peace talks between Kiev and Moscow, Hungarian President Katalina Novak said: "This is not our war, but it is also being waged against Hungarians who love peace, strive for security, mutual respect and well-being. We demand an investigation of the military crimes and punishment of the guilty. Novak also stressed that Hungary supports Ukraine's accession to the European community.

21:06 Germany will expand military cooperation with Finland and Sweden, Scholz said: "We will intensify our military cooperation, especially in the Baltic Sea region and through joint exercises." He also stressed that Berlin would seek "very fast" ratification of the entry of European partners into NATO.

21:00 Russian Transneft has restricted access to the monthly schedule of oil shipments from seaports in an attempt to save the Russian oil market, writes Reuters.

20:58 The Russian army uses the Belgorod airport, which previously served only civilian flights, Schemes (Radio Liberty) report, citing satellite images and data from military analysts. So, Planet Labs recorded eight helicopters and several cars on the territory of the civil airport on May 14. The military expert identified the helicopters as Mi-8s.

This explains the fact that, according to the Russians, all flights at the Belgorod airport and a number of other airports in central and southern Russia are "limited." One of the assumptions about the purpose of such a "schedule" is the reception of transport aircraft and helicopters for the transportation of military cargo and personnel, urgent medical evacuation of the wounded.

20:47 The Cabinet of Ministers will temporarily suspend the regulation of prices for gasoline and diesel fuel in order for operators to saturate the market. According to First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, such an agreement was reached today with market operators. The government expects prices to be up to UAH 58 for diesel fuel and UAH 52 for gasoline.

Sanctions will be applied against market participants abusing the market situation, "the situation will be monitored daily," Sviridenko warned.

20:41 Macron, in a conversation with Zelensky, said that arms supplies to Ukraine would increase in the coming weeks, the press service of the French president said. He also noted that the issue of grain export from Ukraine was discussed.

The heads of state also spoke about post-war security guarantees for Kyiv. Macron also confirmed that the Ukrainian application for EU membership will be considered in June, and reiterated his idea of creating some kind of "European political community" for countries that are not members of the European Union. Earlier, Kyiv categorically rejected the possibility of replacing EU membership with other entities. For Ukraine, the proposal on "alternative options for European integration" is unacceptable, Yermak said.

20:39 Seven buses with Ukrainian defenders of Azovstal arrived at a former penal colony in the DPR-controlled city of Yelenovka near Donetsk, Reuters reports.

20:32 The war is moving into a protracted phase, Reznikov said in an address to the EU Foreign Affairs Council and the UN Secretary General. According to him, in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, the invaders are carrying out engineering and fortification work in order to go on the defensive. At the same time, the minister stressed that the war is destroying the Ukrainian economy, and its prolongation entails the risk of a global food crisis, as well as another migration crisis.

Reznikov noted that Belarusian troops are actively maneuvering near the border with Ukraine, so Ukraine reserves forces in case Moscow nevertheless forces Minsk to invade.

The head of the Defense Ministry is convinced that Russia can be defeated on the battlefield - this will free the world from tyranny, and Europe from a constant threat.

In connection with the upcoming NATO summit in Madrid, Reznikov wants the alliance to answer the question - what future does he see for Ukraine: "The NATO Strategic Concept for the next ten years will be adopted. What place will Europe see for Ukraine in the interests of protecting its eastern borders? All of us present here are thinking about updating the security architecture of Europe, at least."

20:13 The NATO leadership says that they will accept Sweden and Finland as soon as possible, but the President of Turkey was on the way. To expand the alliance, the votes of all members are needed. What the international press writes about this is in the article Why Erdogan is against Finland and Sweden in NATO .

20:07 Investigators will interrogate the Ukrainian military from Azovstal, the RF IC said.

Among the defenders of Mariupol - a separate detachment of special forces Azov, the 12th brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, the 36th separate brigade of the Marine Corps, border guards, policemen, volunteers, the terrorist defense of Mariupol.

Holding positions on Azovstal, they did not allow the enemy to transfer a group of 17 battalion tactical groups (about 20,000 personnel) to other areas, the Defense Ministry said. Thus, they prevented the implementation of the plan for the rapid capture of Zaporozhye, reaching the administrative border of the Donetsk and Zaporozhye regions and creating conditions for encircling the JFO group.

Pinning down the main enemy forces around Mariupol made it possible to prepare and create defensive lines on which Ukrainian troops are still today and give a worthy rebuff to the aggressor. Ukraine received critically needed time to form reserves, regroup forces, and receive assistance from partners.

00:25 264 Ukrainian soldiers were evacuated from Azovstal, all of them in the territory not controlled by Ukraine , said Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar: “53 seriously wounded were evacuated from Azovstal to a medical facility in Novoazovsk to provide them with medical care. Another 211 people were delivered through the humanitarian corridor to Elenovka. For their further return home, an exchange procedure will be carried out."

According to Malyar, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard and the Border Guard Service are jointly carrying out activities to rescue the fighters who still remain on the territory of the blocked plant.

00:19 Zelensky confirmed the evacuation from Azovstal: "Thanks to the actions of the Ukrainian military - the Armed Forces of Ukraine, intelligence, the negotiating group, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN, we hope that we will be able to save the lives of our guys. Among them are seriously wounded, they are being helped. <. ..> The operation to rescue the defenders of Mariupol has begun to bring the guys home, the work continues, and this work requires delicacy and time."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hizbullah loses parliamentary majority, Oct. 17 secures 16 seats
[AnNahar] Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
's Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and its allies lost their parliamentary majority, official results showed Tuesday, while independents achieved a surprise breakthrough.

Full results announced by the interior ministry two days after the election revealed that no bloc will control the 128-seat assembly, a deadlock observers fear could usher in a tense period of political jostling.

The polls, the first since Lebanon was ravaged by its worst ever economic crisis and a cataclysmic explosion at Beirut port in 2020, were seen as a prerequisite for a crucial IMF bailout.

The Hizbollah-led coalition won 61 seats in the 128-member legislature, a drop of 10 members since the last vote was held four years ago. They fell short of the 65 needed to retain a majority following Sunday's polls. The loss was largely due to setbacks suffered by the group’s political partners, and was not expected to weaken the group’s domination of Lebanese politics. All 13 Hizbullah candidates who ran got elected.

Their strongest opponents in parliament will be led by the Christian Lebanese Forces
A Christian political party founded by Bashir Gemayel, who was then bumped off when he was elected president of Leb...
party of former warlord Samir Geagea
...Geagea was imprisoned by the Syrians and their puppets for 11 years in a dungeon in the third basement level of the Lebanese Ministry of Defense. He was released after the Cedar Revolution in 2005...
, that raked in several new seats on the back of a virulent anti-Hizbullah campaign.

New reformist faces who entered the legislative race on the values of a 2019 anti-establishment uprising made a stronger showing that many had predicted.

17 candidates who backed the 2019 protest movement won seats. At least twelve of them will sit in parliament for the first time.

Together with independents and other non-aligned MPs who have sometimes supported the now-defunct protest movement's demands, they could find themselves in a kingmaking position.

They could obtain the support of MP Osama Saad, who supported the protests, and new MP Abdul Rahman al-Bizri.

That was a major achievement considering they went into the vote fragmented and facing intimidation and threats by entrenched mainstream parties. Their showing sends a strong message to ruling class politicians who have held on to their seats despite an economic meltdown that has impoverished the country and triggered the biggest wave of emigration since the 1975-90 civil war.

One of the most notable victories notched up by independents was the election in the third South district of Elias Jradeh and Firas Hamdan for seats that Hizbullah and its allies had not lost in three decades.

Another major satisfaction for those described in Lebanon as the "thawra" (revolution, in Arabic) candidates, was the defeat of several reviled MPs loyal to the Syrian government of Bashir al-Assad.

Hizbullah weapons: Will polls make radical changes
[AnNahar] The main issue that would polarize the new parliament elected on Sunday is Hizbullah's right to keep an arsenal that is described as equivalent to or better than the state's.

Some see it as a historical right and the best defense for the small Mediterranean country while others consider Hizbullah's weapons to be the root of all of Lebanon's ills.

“They forgot the political system, economic system, corruption, the war in Syria and its effects on Lebanon and they forgot the American sanctions,” Hibullah's MP Hussein Haj Hassan said.

Sami Nader, an analyst with the Levant Institute for Strategic Affairs, said that Hizbullah had suffered symbolic losses but was skeptical the polls could yield radical changes.

"Hizbullah and the Iranian axis took a blow but will this pave way for change in Lebanon? I have doubts," he told AFP.

The formation of a government, the election of parliament's speaker and the presidential election could all be very contentious and lead to protracted political crises.

Speaker Nabih Berri has held his job since 1992.

President Michel Aoun, the world's third oldest head of state, had long planned for his son-in-law Jebran Bassil to take over but the Lebanese Forces' surge in the polls could disrupt that scenario.

Disarming Hizbullah has dominated political campaigns among almost all of the group’s opponents, while Hizbullah supporters consider the group defended Lebanon against Israel and against attacks by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida-linked militants over the years.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Cargo 1488
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

Note: 200 is the Russian code for dead, while 300 is for wounded. They are cargo codes. It appears that 1488 is the cargo code for POWs. 1488 has to do with Nazis, not a Russian cargo code. Apologies. Thanks to Thock Spoluck5962 for the correction.

[ColonelCassad] There is a load of 200. There is a load of 300. And there is a load of 1488, which goes from Azovstal to the colony in Yelenovka (the wounded are taken to Novoazovsk)

Today, the capitulation of the enemy at Azovstal continued. According to the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Polyansky, the surrender took place without preconditions.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has already announced that it will conduct interrogations of captured Natsiks.

Earlier, at the suggestion of Wasserman, the Duma announced the need to issue a decree banning the exchange of Nazi war criminals.

Fully agree with these statements. VSUshnikov on ours can and should be changed. Nazis and war criminals - judged on the territory of the DPR.

Three from Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets, with the first starting at 0001 hrs, May 17th:
Still started to give up
May 17, 0:01 am

The first ten buses with prisoners of war left Azovstal drove towards the DPR

According to preliminary information, about 300 militants left the territory of the plant today. About 50 of them were wounded.

The wounded are now being taken to the Central Regional Hospital of Novoazovsk, where they will be provided with the necessary medical care. The rest, not wounded, were taken away by buses in the direction of Yelenovka. Ukrainian prisoners of war are kept in the colony there.

The next batch of prisoners will begin to surrender at 0400 hrs.

It is possible that some of the prisoners who are related to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, policemen or border guards found themselves by the will of fate at Azovstal will then be exchanged. But not the Nazis from the "Azov" regiment. For the technologists of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the surrender was a surprise.

Zelensky is preparing another chatter-statement on the fact of mass surrender.

Judging by the pause in all ‼️ Zelensky’s LOMs, they are still developing an information strategy and waiting for a go-ahead on what to say.

PS
Kiev officially recognized the surrender of 264 in Mariupol. Zelensky, in his address, allocated only 40 seconds for the surrender of his militants.

Now Ukraine is holding about 500 prisoners of war soldiers and officers of the Russian Federation, DPR and LPR.

At the disposal of the Russian Federation, the DPR and the LPR are about 5,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war. After the surrender of the militants stuck at Azovstal, this figure will grow to seven thousand.

Second posted at 1300 hrs. The link is no videos embedded in Telegram, so the videos ae untranslatable.
Garbage removal from Azovstal
May 17, 1:01 p.m.

Published a video with the "evacuation" (surrender) of 265 militants hiding in the basements of "Azovstal"

According to Russian estimates, the initial enemy grouping in Mariupol was up to 20,000 Ukrainian servicemen, according to Ukrainian estimates, up to 14,500 soldiers and officers. On May 16, 2227 people remained. There are less than 2,000 left hiding in the cellars now. Draw your own conclusions.

The third post:
The last chords of "Azov"
May 17, 21:05

The process has already gone serious, not like yesterday, when a quarter of a thousand people surrendered from the Ukrainian side

New batches of militants from Azovstal continued to surrender all day today

The State Duma will consider on Wednesday a draft resolution banning the exchange of Nazi criminals. Of the two and a half thousand representatives of the ukrovermacht who remained at Azovstal, approximately one in three were from the Nazi Azov regiment.

Fifth Column
Tax filings reveal how BLM co-founder spent charity funds
[NYPOST] Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors used charity funds to pay her brother and child’s father eye-watering sums of cash for various services, according to tax documents filed with the IRS
...the Internal Revenue Service; that office of the United States government that collects taxes and persecutes the regime's political enemies...
The co-founder’s brother, Paul Cullors, saw a cool sum of $840,000 hit his bank account for allegedly providing security services to the nonprofit organization, tax documents seen by The Post show.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
the organization paid a company owned by Damon Turner, with whom Cullors shares a child, almost $970,000 to help "produce live events" as well as other "creative services."

On top of the controversy, BLM wrapped up its fiscal year — which runs from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 — with an eye-watering $42 million in net assets.

The foundation had an operating budget of about $4 million, according to a board member.

More than $37 million was spent by the foundation on grants, real estate, and charter on private flights, according to the tax filings.

But since the LSD's are currently in power and because it is a WOKE PARANOID Mid-Term Election year. We likely won't see any serious legal effort for a while.

The LSD controlled DOJ Political Slow Walk might just set a new snail pace record.

Either way, the LSD/DC Swamp can now rope in the BLM leadership and demand their political support and services during the election....OR ELSE.

India-Pakistan
How Pak is fooling the world by using its derivatives, The Resistence Front, Lashkar-e-Khalsa
[OneIndia] An officer tells OneIndia that if one has noticed that groups such as the Lashkar-e-Tayiba or the Jaish-e-Mohammad have not claimed responsibility for any of the recent attacks in J&K.

Off late groups such as the Lashkar-e-Khalsa, the Freedom Fighter or the The Resistence Front have cropped up in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
(J&K). These lesser known groups have been claiming credit for the recent attacks.

However the Intelligence agencies have learnt that these are deliberate tactics adopted by Rawalpindi to divert attention. An officer tells OneIndia that if one has noticed that groups such as the Lashkar-e-Tayiba or the Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
have not grabbed credit for any of the recent attacks in J&K.

Taking into consideration the new tactic by Pakistain, Union Home Minister, Amit Shah directed the Jammu and Kashmir police as well as the security agencies to refrain from using names of new terror groups in the Union Territory. The are only derivatives of Pakistain based globally proscribed groups created by the ISI to spread the narrative of home grown terror in the Valley.

The directive came after intelligence inputs suggested that the Pakistain groups such as the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad-Mohammad have not been taking credit for the attacks as they are under pressure from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)

'Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
's mobile phones stolen after recording video threat''Imran Khan's mobile phones stolen after recording video threat'

Since Pakistain continues to remain in the Grey List, the ISI has told its main terror groups to lie low.

This is one of the main reasons why the main groups which continue to operate in the Valley have not grabbed credit for the attacks.

Earlier this week a lesser known group called as the Lashkar-e-Islam
...a group of Islamic bandidos infesting Khyber Agency. It was headed by a former bus driver and eventually folded into the TTP...
has threatened the Kashmir pandits to leave the Union Territory.

Not a rare occurrence: India slams Pakistain over killing of 2 SikhsNot a rare occurrence: India slams Pakistain over killing of 2 Sikhs

In a letter addressed to the president of the migrant colony the group has asked all migrant and RSS agents to leave or face death. The letter also said that there is no space for Kashmiri Pandits who want another Israel in Kashmir to kill Kashmiri Moslems.

'Double, triple your security, be ready for murder. You will die,' the letter also reads.

The letter came days after the killing of a Kashmiri Pandit government employee, Rahul Bhat. He was rubbed out by gunnies in Budgam district. The attack took place at the Tehsildar's office in central Kashmir on Thursday afternoon.

An Intelligence Bureau official tells OneIndia that this appears to be an off-shoot of the The Resistence Front, which is a proxy for the Lashkar-e-Tayiba.

The Lashkar-e-Tayiba had created the The Resistence Front (The Resistence Front) which was the localised version of the group. Now with the heat high on the TRF, the name of the outfit has been changed, the official also said.

Afghanistan
The Taliban Dissolves the Human Rights Commission and Five Other Key Departments, Declaring them “Unnecessary”
[KhaamaPress] In the midst of a financial crisis, Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
authorities in Afghanistan disbanded five major departments of the former US-backed administration, including the Human Rights Commission.

This fiscal year, Afghanistan will have a budget deficit of 44 billion Afghanis, according to Taliban officials, who announced their first annual national budget since taking control of the country last August.

The dissolved departments, in addition to the Human Rights Commission, are the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR), National Security Council, Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of the Constitution (ICOIC), and the General Secretariats of the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) and Mishrano Jirga (Upper House).

The Taliban government’s Deputy Spokesperson, Innamullah Samangani, told Rooters, "Because these departments were not deemed necessary and were not included in the budget, they have been dissolved,".

The national budget, according to Samangani, is "based on objective facts" and is solely for departments that have been active and productive.

"If needed," he said, the bodies could be reactivated in the future.

Despite the Taliban’s assurances to the world that they would be more moderate, they have yet to allow older girls to return to school and have imposed rules mandating women and girls to wear Hijab and be accompanied in public by male relatives.

#1  Well, I guess the small government wing of the Taliban is holding sway. I suspect that the “we need some food and money” faction will soon be prominent. Maybe growing food instead of poppies would be a good initiative unless their population has developed a problem with chronic obesity that I don’t know about.

Khodakovsky: another thousand militants from Azovstal are expected to be taken prisoner
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] According to the plan for May 17, 2022, about 1,000 Ukrainian neo-Nazis and military personnel who hid in the basements of the Azovstal plant in the city of Mariupol of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) should surrender. This was stated by the commander of the Vostok battalion of the People's Militia of the DPR, Alexander Khodakovsky , on the air of the 60 Minutes program on the Rossiya 1 TV channel.

However, so far the plan has not been fulfilled - the number of militants who have laid down their arms is lower than planned.

“Today's target is 1,000 people a day. Until we deal with it. From the northern side, we observed 250 people passing by our positions. There is such a system that guides lead groups out, come back and bring out a new one. Almost everyone is walking, there are few wounded , ”said Khodakovsky.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Water Tower With Johnny Cash Silhouette Springs Leak In Most Unfortunate Place
[NotTheBee] In Kingsland, Arkansas, the hometown of the incomparable Johnny Cash, the water tower which bears his silhouette has sprung a rather unfortunate leak.

Actually, because it's Arkansas, the "leak" was started by someone who took a gun and shot the Man in Black in a rather compromising spot.

I'm sorry, I cannot stop laughing at this video.

Does that make me immature? Sure.

They say it's no laughing matter for the city, however.

Kingsland Mayor Luke Neal said the town is "losing about 30,000 gallons of water per day."

Now it's costing the town about $200 each day-- totaling about $1,200 so far.

"You kind of run on a tighter budget in small towns like this, because really all you've got to work with... things like this can set you back a little bit," Neal said.

Ministry of Vice and Virtue Urges Troops to Obey Orders
[ToloNews] Speaking at a gathering, the deputy Minister of Vice and Virtue called on the forces of the Islamic Emirate to respect the orders of the Islamic Emirate and to not interfere in judicial activities nor harass the people.

"Everyone should be punished in line with their crimes and justice is determined by the court," said Abdul Rahman Munir, deputy Minster of Vice and Virtue.

He instructed the forces of the Islamic Emirate to avoid going to parks and other entertainment areas.

"Going to the entertainment areas disturbs the people. Please avoid such things and avoid going there in the future," Munir said.

Local officials said that they are following the orders of the supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate, Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada.

"They should treat the people with good manners. There have been problems in some areas but they will be solved," Parwan’s Governor Obaidullah Aminzada said.

This comes as several reports of harassment by Islamic Emirate forces have been published.

China-Japan-Koreas
America's largest defense contractors have extensive ties to the Chinese government and military
[THEBLAZE] Several of the largest defense contractors in the U.S. have extensive ties to the government of China and the Communist Chinese Party.

Raytheon, Bell Flight, and Boeing — three of the nation’s most prolific defense contractors — continue to maintain close relationships with firms that conduct business with the Chinese government. Fox News reported that Lockheed Martin has business interests in China.

Issac Stone Fish, the CEO and founder of Strategy Risks, a China risk consultancy company, warned that these defense contractors’ relationships with the Chinese government present severe risks for the U.S.

Fish said, "Doing a relatively significant amount of business in China changes the risk profile now more than ever for any U.S. company, whether for compliance, cyber, reputation, security or other risks."

"Those risks are particularly critical for companies that safeguard U.S. national defense and security," he continued. "U.S. defense contractors need to better understand their risk exposure to China and the Chinese Communist Party, so they can reduce their China risks to better serve the needs of the U.S. military and national security."

Two of Raytheon’s subsidiary companies, Pratt & Whitney (P&W) and Collins Aerospace Systems, have ties to the Chinese military, the People’s Liberation Army.

P&W is a prominent player in the Chinese market and maintains offices in Shanghai and Beijing. P&W also reportedly powers two-fifths of China’s civilian helicopters with its engine technology. The company also manufactures engines for the Chinese state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, which is intimately tied to the People’s Liberation Army.

P&W also has joint ventures with Chinese companies including China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) and Xi’an Aircraft.

AVIC is a conglomerate owned by the Chinese government and is tied to the People’s Liberation Army. It was previously placed on the Treasury Department’s Non-SDN Chinese Military-Industrial Complex Companies List and the Commerce Department’s Entity List.

Collins Aerospace Systems, Raytheon’s other subsidiary in China, has more than 15 locations and nine joint ventures in the Chinese mainland.

The company’s website said, "For close to 40 years, Collins Aerospace has been demonstrating our commitment to China. Our growing presence in China has been made possible by our company’s significant investments in the country as well as strong corporate and personal relationships that have been formed over the last three decades."

Bell Trexton, another contractor that produces military-grade aircraft, has a whole page on its website dedicated to its "China Service Center."

Bell’s website says, "Zhenjiang Bell Textron Aviation Services Center offers comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul services to our customers in the Greater China region, including Macao, Hong Kong, and Mongolia. Our in-country product and customer support engineers will ensure your aircraft is ready and operational at all times."

Impartial Jury?
[RedState] The trial of Michael Sussmann, a Hillary Clinton apparatchik who spread false conspiracy theories about Donald Trump to the FBI, begins on Tuesday. That follows the selection of the jury, which is presenting new challenges for John Durham’s first major prosecution in his investigation of the Russian collusion hoax.

Sussmann’s prior attempts to get the case dismissed failed miserably after Durham expertly responded to the contradictory arguments presented. Going forward, though, the final decision will be in the hands of a jury that includes a Hillary Clinton donor and a woman who claims she can’t be impartial regarding Donald Trump.
Then why is she on the Jury?
Many of the members of the broader jury pool, as well as some selected for the jury itself, expressed strong disdain for former President Donald Trump and/or support for Clinton. Most said they hadn’t heard of the Sussmann case until the judge told them about it last week.

"I remembered that the 2016 election was kind of a mess and that there were a lot of shenanigans," one of the selected jurors told the court. She said she "strongly" disliked Trump and that she didn’t think she could be impartial if the case was about someone on his team but noted that "if it’s not directly about Trump," then she could be impartial.

The obvious problem here is that the case is about Donald Trump. No, it’s not a Trump associate on trial, but the entire basis of the case is that Sussmann went to the FBI and lied to them about the Alfa Bank conspiracy theory, which asserted that the former president had a secret server communicating with the Russians.

On what planet can a juror who outright says they have a strong animus against Trump be impartial in judging someone who’s on trial for actively trying to destroy Trump with falsities? It’s absolutely insane that this woman made it into the final jury pool.

She’s not the only one, though. Other jurors also revealed that they donated to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and/or donated to Joe Biden in 2020. Given that most people never donate to any political campaign for president, it seems unreasonable that doing so wouldn’t be disqualifying. There are plenty of other possible jurors to choose from who aren’t overtly political to the point where they gave money to Clinton.

Further, the jury pool itself is comprised of 11 women and only five men. Why does that matter? Because women, specifically liberal women like you’d find in Washington, DC, represent one of the strongest demographics for the Democrat Party.
I see an aquittal.

#6  This just in: On the first day of the trial of Hillary’s lawyer, Michael Sussmann, the Durham team’s opening statement and its first witnesses attempted to walk a fine line to show that the Democratic National Committee lawyer used his unique position to get the FBI to investigate Trump for secretly communicating with a Russian bank to get to Putin.
Durham’s team argues that the FBI was duped into treating seriously the Trump-is-a-Russian-secret-agent-with-super-secret-ties-to-a-Moscow-bank story that the Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer brought to it. They will argue in court that if the FBI had known it was Hillary’s oppo-research, they would have dismissed it out of hand.
I hope ya'll don't have high blood pressure. This whole thing is a joke.

#11  Notably,Elias mentioned Jake Sullivan as someone at the Clinton Campaign who knew about the Trump/Russia research (though there is uncertainty as to whether Sullivan knew about Fusion’s activities). Elias would give the campaign these updates.

A brief aside: Jake Sullivan’s wife is Margaret Goodlander - who serves as counsel to Attorney General Merrick Garland. We understand that she has not recused herself from anything having to do with the Special Counsel’s investigation. We further understand that Goodlander is keeping close tabs on Durham’s investigation. We’ll report on that down the road…

Anyway, Elias also testified that the Clinton Campaign paid them (Perkins Coie) a “flat fee” for their legal services. Why is this important? Because it explains why Sussmann would block bill the Clinton Campaign (see tweet below). (“Block billing” is having a multi-hour entry with a generalized description. Example: “6.5 hours on confidential project.) For flat fee work, attorneys are generally allowed block billing because the client isn’t paying the hourly rate.

Retired Russian colonel speaks out on Russian TV
More on this story from yesterday, though the Daily Mail spelt his name as Mikhail Khodaryonok.
BLUF:
[BBC] Russia's mainstream media outlets offer a view of the Ukraine war that is unlike anything seen from outside of the country. For a start, they don't even call it a war. But our Russia editor reflects on a rare exchange broadcast on state TV.
It was an extraordinary piece of television.

The programme was 60 Minutes, the flagship twice-daily talk show on Russian state TV: studio discussion that promotes the Kremlin line on absolutely everything, including on President Putin's so-called "special military operation" in Ukraine.

But on Monday night, studio guest Mikhail Khodarenok, a military analyst and retired colonel, painted a very different picture.

He warned that "the situation [for Russia] will clearly get worse" as Ukraine receives additional military assistance from the West and that "the Ukrainian army can arm a million people".

Referring to Ukrainian soldiers, he noted: "The desire to defend their motherland very much exists. Ultimate victory on the battlefield is determined by the high morale of troops who are spilling blood for the ideas they are ready to fight for.

"The biggest problem with [Russia's] military and political situation," he continued, "is that we are in total political isolation and the whole world is against us, even if we don't want to admit it. We need to resolve this situation.

"The situation cannot be considered normal when against us, there is a coalition of 42 countries and when our resources, military-political and military-technical, are limited."

The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announces that it has unsealed a Brooklyn federal court indictment against Moises Luis Zagala Gonzalez on charges of attempted computer intrusions and conspiracy to commit computer intrusions.

"The multi-tasking doctor treated patients, created and named his cyber tool after death, profited from a global ransomware ecosystem in which he sold the tools for conducting ransomware attacks, trained the attackers about how to extort victims and then boasted about successful attacks, including by malicious actors associated with the government of Iran," US Attorney Breon Peace says in a statement.

Zagala used a number of online aliases, including "Nosophoros," "Aesculapius" and "Nebuchadnezzar" — the Babylonian king who conquered Jerusalem in 597 BCE.

The Justice Department says Zagala publicly discussed his awareness that his clients used his Thanos ransomware, even linking to a news story about the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps contractor "MuddyWater’s" cyberattack on Israeli companies ClearSky and Profero.

The two firms said at the time that they identified and thwarted the attacks before any harm could be inflicted, but were raising an alarm to the methods used, indicating that they could have been employed in earlier hacking attacks that might have gone unnoticed.

Zagala’s current whereabouts are unknown, but the FBI

WFP Says it Helped 17.5 Million Afghans in 2022
[ToloNews] The World Food Programme said on Twitter it provided food assistance, nutrition and other support for 17.5 million Afghans.

"On International Day of Families. WFP is reaching mothers and children across Afghanistan in some of the most remote and mountainous areas of the country," WFP Afghanistan said on Twitter.

"We have been able to provide food or cash to over 17 million people, so they can purchase food for themselves," said Waheedullah Amani, a front man for the WFP.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), said in a recent report that "some 70% of Afghan households reported being unable to cover basic food and non-food needs, reflecting the impact of decline in household incomes."

Economists say the reduction in the international community’s aid to Afghanistan will cause further deterioration of the economic condition.

"Due to the stall in main factors of the economic sector, there is a need for extension of the international aid, otherwise the economic condition of the people will become worse," said Fahim Abassi, an economist.

National polio drive announced after detection of three cases
[Dawn] As three cases of polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set. Currently the disease is only found in Pakistain and Afghanistain...
have been reported after a gap of 15 months, the national polio programme has decided to launch a campaign across the country to boost the immunity level of 43.3 million children up to the age of five years.

Moreover, considering a massive movement across the Afghan border, it has been decided to synchronise the campaign with Afghanistan.

Earlier, the campaign had to be held at sub-national level or in selected union councils but after detection of the recent cases it has been decided to conduct it across the country.

An official of the Ministry of NHS said the campaign will be conducted from May 23 to 27. As many as 43.3 million children under five years will also be given vitamin-A. He said that around 340,000 frontline workers will participate in the campaign.

On January 27, Pakistain marked a major milestone with no wild polio case reported for one year. But experts said there was still an imminent risk of poliovirus to any unvaccinated child across the border as children were moving with families and Pakistain and Afghanistan were the only two countries left with the virus.

However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
during last few weeks, three cases of polio have been reported from North Wazoo.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran state TV says 2 French nationals arrested over protests
[Rudaw] Iran’s state TV on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of two French citizens, saying they met with protesting teachers and took part in an anti-government rally.

The report identified the two as Cecile Kohler, 37, and Chuck Gay Paree, 69, and said they were not on a tourist visit to Iran. La Belle France had earlier identified the two as a teachers’ union official and her partner on vacation in Iran.

The Intelligence Ministry in Tehran last week only said that it had detained two Europeans.

The TV broadcast footage of the arrival of the two, saying they landed from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
at Tehran airport on April 28. It also broadcast footage of their meetings with Iranian teachers and other activists, as well as their presence at a protest gathering, and also aired a video purported to show the two being arrested while on their way to the Tehran airport to leave the country on May 7.

The report said the two French citizens were "organizing a protest" with the purpose of creating "unrest" in Iran.

Last Thursday, La Belle France condemned the "groundless arrest" of the two and called for their immediate release. La Belle France’s Foreign Ministry said its ambassador in Tehran has already attempted to obtain consular access to the couple and that the charge d’affaires at Iran’s Embassy in Gay Paree has been summoned for explanations.

Another French citizen, Benjamin Briere, was sentenced in January by Iran
...The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both...
to over eight years in prison for espionage, for photographing "prohibited areas" with a drone in 2020 during what he said was a tourist visit in the north of the country.

Briere’s lawyer had claimed his client was being used as a "bargaining chip" in diplomatic negotiations at the time between Iran and Western countries over Tehran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers.

Also in January, Iranian justice ordered the re-imprisonment of Franco-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah, arrested in 2019, who had for a time been allowed to serve a five-year prison sentence under house arrest. She had been accused of "propaganda against the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s political system" and "collusion to undermine national security."

There have been teachers’ strikes over the past weeks in cities across Iran. Teachers have walked out of their classes to press for better pay and working conditions.

The Taliban Orders the UN Female Staff in Afghanistan to Wear Hijab
[KhaamaPress] The Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice has ordered female staff members of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to wear the hijab.

On Monday, the 16th of May, the organization shared the Taliban’s directive to wear the hijab with its employees.

"Taliban claim new women’s dress rules are ’advice’ but are imposing them as mandatory—including on Afghan women working at UN." Heather Barr, Associate Director of the Women’s Rights division at Human Rights Watch, tweeted.

Despite Taliban rules, Barr called upon UNAMA on "how will [it] protect [its] colleagues’ safety & freedom?".

According to a UNAMA statement, a delegation of Taliban officials from the Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice told the UN that female employees should consider wearing the hijab, while reporting to duties.

The statement also notes that the personnel of the Ministry will stand outside the UN office to "monitor if hijab is used or not". In an event if the personnel finds a female staff member without hijab, they will talk to her "politely" to wear it as wearing hijab is mandatory outside.

In addition to that, outside the UN office, the Ministry has also placed a poster calling on women to wear the "hijab." Barr tweeted a photo of the poster, which shows a black layered Niqab and a bright blue Burqa (Chadari), as examples of hijab.

The Ministry, which had recently ordered that the hijab was mandatory, said the best type of hijab in the directive was Chadari or Burqa.

The Taliban had warned that if the women disobeyed the order, their parents would be punished and imprisoned.

Ex-con who shot rifle into NYC crowd has long rap sheet, was on parole
Not at all ex, as it turns out — merely between engagements.
[NYPOST] A career criminal is in jug after police said he shot up a crowded Brooklyn intersection last week, sending more than 20 people scrambling for safety, sources said.

Shocking surveillance photos show the gunman — identified by sources as Terrel Norman, 36 — clutching an automatic rifle on East 102 Street before jumping into a Nissan Sentra with a pal.

Cops pulled the car over several blocks away and arrested both men, the sources said.

None of the intended targets were hit.

Norman has a history of emotional disturbance and a lengthy rap sheet that includes more than two dozen busts, a stint in state prison on an armed robbery conviction, and a pending Brooklyn gun case, according to records.

In his most recent arrest police said Norman was pulled over in March on a traffic violation when cops determined he was allegedly driving without a license — and a loaded .45-caliber handgun inside the vehicle, the sources said.

He was initially released on bail but the bail was rescinded after prosecutors didn’t get an indictment in the case in five days — as required by state speedy trial statutes.

Police could not determine if the gun in the car belonged to him or one of his passengers, and are awaiting DNA results to determine if they have a case.

"This individual has no regard for consequence," one law enforcement source told The Post. "You have someone, multiple warrants, parole at various times or probation, and he has a wreckage every in his life.”
Mentally ill leads to poor impulse control? The usual story, and New York City is determined that such people will not get the help they need.

In the area of the village of Vishnevoe, Zaporozhye region, the Kiev regime made an attempt to attack units of the Russian Armed Forces with the forces of two Ukrainian mechanized battalions on tanks and infantry fighting vehicles," — the Ministry of Defense commented on the video.

As noted in the department, Russian units destroyed 26 Ukrainian tanks and 12 infantry fighting vehicles, the irretrievable losses of the enemy in manpower amounted to about a hundred militants.

The ministry clarified that the advancing of enemy armored vehicles and preparations for the attack were spotted by drones and technical intelligence equipment.

Armored vehicles were hit by unmanned aerial vehicles, artillery was operating, and the Russian military also fired oncoming fire from tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. Ukrainian troops took to flight.

Earlier, the Russian military took control of the entire Kherson region and the Azov part of the Zaporozhye region . Civil-military administrations were formed in the regions. Thus, it was possible to completely cut off Ukraine from the Sea of Azov , as well as connect these territories with the DPR.

Massacre video reopens wounds for missing Syrians' families
[AnNahar] For years, the Siyam family clung to hope they would one day be reunited with their son Wassim, who they believed was being held in a Syrian government prison after he went missing at a checkpoint nearly a decade ago.

That hope evaporated the moment they saw him in a newly leaked video: He was among dozens of blindfolded, bound men who, one by one, were shot and thrown into a trench by Syrian security agents.

"It shocked us to our core," Siham Siyam said of the gruesome video, which was taken in 2013 and emerged late last month.

2 most wanted TTP terrorists killed in North Waziristan: ISPR
[Dawn] Security forces killed two "important and most wanted" snuffies of the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain (TTP) in North Wazoo district's Boya area, the military's media affairs wing said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that security forces and snuffies exchanged fire last night in the area during which the two forces of Evil were killed.

They were identified as commander Rasheed alias Jabir and Abdul Salam alias Chamtoo.

Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the killed terrorists, the ISPR said. The two had been actively involved in terrorist activities in the area, it added.

TTP attacks on Pakistain soil have of late seen an uptick.

The previous PTI government and the TTP had agreed to a month-long ceasefire to hold talks last year. However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
the hard boy group had declined to extend the ceasefire after the one-month period ended, accusing the government of failing to honour the decisions reached earlier.

On March 30, the TTP announced the launch of Operation al-Badar against law-enforcement agencies, which led to a surge in its attacks in tribal districts, southern region and other parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Last month, two TTP forces of Evil were killed in a raid in Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
. They were identified as Khalil and Ehsan.

The police had said the slain snuffies were involved in attacks on security forces and several other sabotage activities, including an attack on a police mobile van, in which five coppers were martyred and seven others were maimed.

Meanwhile,
...back at the saw mill, Scarface Al had tied Little Nell to the log and was about to turn on the buzz saw...
two TTP sources told AFP last week that the group had extended a ceasefire with the government, agreed for the Eid period, till May 16 to hold peace talks.

A TTP letter outlining the truce told fighters "not to violate the decision taken by the central command".

Both sources said a team of Pak mediators has travelled to Afghanistan to meet the TTP leadership for talks facilitated by the Afghan Taliban.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
Islamabad has not yet commented on the matter.

Punjab counter-terror police arrests 2 suspects involved in Lahore's Anarkali blast
[Dawn] Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Police's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the deadly blast in Lahore's crowded Anarkali area earlier this year, it emerged on Tuesday.

On January 20, three people were killed and over 30 injured in the blast in Lahore's Anarkali bazaar, which law enforcement agencies had initially believed was a gas cylinder explosion. Subsequent investigations determined that it was a kaboom. The Baloch Nationalist Army, a newly emerged terror outfit, had grabbed credit for the blast.

The Punjab police on Tuesday said the "terrorist network" was busted through the services of the Safe City Authority, intelligence and other technical methods.

In a statement, it said the two suspects — identified as Sana Ullah and Abdul Razziq — were arrested when they reached Lahore from Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
via truck. It added that the pair was planning to conduct two kabooms in Lahore in a single day.

Two detonators for prepared improved bombs, a primacord, remote control and batteries were recovered from the individuals, the police said.

"The terrorist links go back to an anti-state agency. Anti-state elements in a neighbouring country got this blast carried out after planning," the police said.

Separately, a blurb later issued by the CTD said the two confessed to their involvement in the Anarkali blast and subsequently, a first information report was registered at the CTD cop shoppe in Lahore.

The CTD said that all the main suspects of the blast had been arrested and the department's investigation team would "leave no stone unturned" to ensure their conviction through a legal process.

In March, six faceless myrmidons linked to the blast were killed during an exchange of fire in the general area of Nagao Mountains in Balochistan's Sibi.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Nazis did not apologize, they were not afraid, but they could not look us in the eye. The enemy at Azovstal began to surrender
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Dmitry Steshin

[KP] Early in the morning, on May 16, the positions under the walls of Azovstal began to stir. A white flag poked out of a tunnel under the railway tracks, followed by people in a strange, dark sandy uniform with blue tape on their sleeves and ammunition. Together with the “factory inmates”, the boy Kolya got out - he looked to be 15-16 years old - for the last month he lived at Azovstal practically on the surface, in one of the factory supply rooms. As you might guess, the teenager testified to good will and readiness for dialogue. This dialogue has been long awaited. Both our negotiating group and the "Azovites" themselves, as the militias called them - "PSE" Azovstal."

For a long four hours I sat in positions in some kind of administrative factory building unwound in the trash. It was very quiet, and for the first time I heard the toads yelling in the Kalmius River, they are now in spring love. We were waiting. They were waiting for this whole epic to end and someone to go home, at least for a few days on leave, so that later, if necessary, continue to fight further.

By one o'clock in the afternoon, the radio spoke clearly and sternly: do not open fire, sappers will start working from 13.00, open the mined passage for those who surrender and dismantle the rubble. Everyone take their positions, triple their vigilance, and prevent provocations. The exit of the first group with the wounded at 15.00.

It was lunch time, the fighters regretfully set aside or quickly scraped the cans with rations of meat and vegetable canned food. The fighter with the call sign “Borzoy” took the “Bumblebee” flamethrower and, fitting it behind his back, muttered: “You can expect everything from these. The positions will be cleared, our firing points will be copied and how they will go for a breakthrough ... ". The place for the exit of the surrendered and the removal of the wounded was chosen wisely - a narrow passage under the tracks, along the embankment along the same narrow corridor between the buildings. Under the full supervision of "Borzoy" ...

Barbecue at Azovstal
The passage for surrender turned out to be miraculous - a bomb hit between the tracks, throwing out several tons of earth. This hole, the Ukrainian militants threw rusty, bent iron and mined almost three layers. Now, these same people in a strange form, quickly and dexterously dismantled the blockage with shovels, and having disassembled, moved between the embankment and our building. Our fighter, who crouched near the loophole, took aim at the enemies - they were about ten meters away. The "Azovites" walked, sometimes stopping and crouching over some dark green boxes sprinkled with dust.

These were home-made mines made of cartridge zinc stuffed with plastid. The calculation is that tankers will not pay attention to the usual military garbage - empty cartridge zinc. But, some mines were connected by wires - their "Azov" sappers cut them without hesitation. And all this happened in complete silence.

One of ours shouted out: “What, falconers, have you fought? Well, tell me how the stick is right?" But no one supported the wit, the fervent cry faded in silence. The strangers were all with weapons, however, machine guns were thrown behind their backs, pistols in buttoned holsters.

The "Azovites" reached the exit from the yard and stopped in some confusion. In front of them stretched the floodplain of the River, delightful in its greenery and width. And on the other side of Naberezhny Prospekt, there is a Sarmat restaurant. Those who left the factory were, without exaggeration, shocked by the view.

One of the strangers sighed: "Oh, now would be a barbecue!". And I, looking at this cafe long closed because of the war, thought the same thing ...

Mercy trait
THEY didn't look into the asphalt, but they didn't look into our eyes either. All young, up to twenty and a little more. Very cool gear, everyone. But the weapon is the same - our eternal Kalashnikov. They weren't dirty. They weren't haggard and scared. Rather tense. So far, they had all the necessary stripes - from yellow-black flags to "Azov" chevrons.

And we, with my comrade, the militia Vlad, did not know how to behave. He held the machine almost at the ready. To be honest, I was ready to hang on Vlad's shoulders. He lost everything in this war - his house in Poltava, relatives, fellow soldiers, health. Exchanged for the trenches the best years of male maturity.

I have not been separated from Vlad for the third month already and I know how sometimes fierce, terrible anger boils in him. But Vlad was calm. Probably, something happened to us that always happens to Russian people at the sight of a surrendering enemy. No matter what bestiality and cruelty he does, no matter what bloody battles the day before, there is such an invisible line beyond which mercy turns on. No, of course, prisoners can later be judged, but laying mounds of severed heads right on the battlefield is not in our tradition. Vlad spoke first, very calmly:

Why are you so clean? Does that mean there is water?

The guy with the bushy beard, with Stechkin in his chest holster, seemed to be waiting for this question:

- There is water. Technical. There - "Azov" pointed with a hand in a tactical glove to the going black pipes - there are tons of it! And even tea can be brewed normally. But food has been a problem for a week now. We found apples here, a box, it was such a simple holiday.

I couldn't resist:

- How many of you are there?

The guy with Stechkin answered both evasively and with soldier's ingenuity:

You'll be amazed how many of us are out there.

I got the camera:

- This is probably your last chance to tell your relatives that you are alive. I can record videos, I'll throw them in the evening.

But, they did not want to act, none.

The guy with Stechkin turned out to be my namesake. Almost. Named Dmitro. We talked about the bombings. According to Dmitro, the jamming was terrifying, creepy, and only:

- To break the bunker, you need to put three FAB-500s in one place. The first collapses the building, the second makes a funnel, the third breaks through to the bomb shelter.

What were you doing during the bombings?

- In "Counter-strike" they were cut along the grid ...

Vlad once again examined the audience and issued a diagnosis:

- If we were all dressed ... well, in tracksuits, and put on a bench in the park, no one would understand who is here for what and for whom ...

There was a pause, and to fill it in, I remarked:

- It would still be interesting to understand why we are so bloody ...

18-year-old "Azov" Nazar from Lviv broke away from another mine and for the first time in many months I heard the Ukrainian language live:

- Ztokhnuvshi people with people ... (pushed people with people, in Ukrainian)

Dmitro noticed that “everyone got along just fine” and said that he was from Mariupol. But Vlad did not agree here:

- I am from Poltava, I left to fight in the fourteenth year, because I understood that I could not get along there. Here we all speak Russian. And they spread rot on the Russian, they adopted a bunch of laws!

Dmitro squeezed out:

- Well, yes.

But he quickly gathered himself, saying that all these were our internal Ukrainian affairs, but why did Russia get into this? I did not expect such malice from Vlad:

- And what, you wanted you to simply kill all of us, and no one would stand up? Now Europe and the USA are for you, and Russia is for us. Are you okay? And we're fine. That is, it is not normal to ruin youth in the war.

Dmitro remarked:

- I, too, have been fighting since I was 14. Also youth ... of that. Has ended already.

Vlad perked up: "Where did you fight?" I left them to talk, and they talked for an hour.

Our officer showed up.

- Let's move on to defuse.

There were still many mines - half of Naberezhny Prospekt.

Losers or losers?
An hour later, the first batch of "zahistniks" left the factory. Before passing under the tracks, they tore off their sweaty armor, threw off their helmets and weapons, and went into captivity. They didn't feel defeated, more like losers. Lost one battle. And yet, they believed in our mercy and knew for sure that they would not shoot their legs and gouge out their eyes. As "Azov" did with our prisoners.

The first party left, and ... almost immediately returned - already with a stretcher. They carried the wounded away from the factory. The Azov people told us, they say, “we would sit at the plant until the New Year.”

Perhaps, but the wounded, judging by their condition, would not have survived until the next Sunday. And as one of our negotiators explained to me informally, "we started the surrender process with an act of mercy." It was hard to argue with that.

In general, I did not want to argue about anything, sitting on the loose earth, under the menacingly creaking exploded rails. An officer from Azov showed up. According to him, the core of the regiment is still in position, waiting for the first day of surrender to pass. They have the Internet, and they greedily catch every message on the Net. But one thing is already clear to everyone - "the evil Kyiv owner of the living" Azov "is not needed." This is finally understood by everyone.

In general, by all indications, the war in Mariupol is over. At all!

Finally, Vlad surprised me:

- After the war, I would drink with this Dmitro.

- Did you forgive them?

- No. But I liked it, we would have something to talk about.

- What did you like?

- He is still the only one who did not pretend to be a cook and did not play around. This is a worthy enemy.

But we defeated them.

- Yes. But it was very hard.

It is worth noting that earlier information appeared that the wounded of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were being taken out of the basements of Azovstal for treatment in the DPR. Our observer Nikolai Varsegov comments on this news:

"To tell the truth, I initially had ... a misunderstanding of this decision on our part. By accepting enemy wounded, including the Nazis of Azov, we, of course, make life much easier for those who hid under the plant. Now they do not have to share the meager remains of water and food with those who came out of No need to waste physical and moral strength to help them, and therefore the surrender of these basement warriors will drag on for some time, tying down our military over Azovstal.

I have no doubt that many Russians, who worry about our soldiers and wish for a speedy victory, think the same way.

But there is another, probably more valuable side of the coin - humanism. Most, I believe, the rescued Ukrainian wounded, as well as their loved ones, will change their minds to everything that is happening. They will turn on the mind, as happens with hundreds of other military Ukrainians who are in our captivity.

Every now and then we see on TV screens absolutely adequate people who have surrendered to the Russian army, who sincerely declare that they do not want to fight for the crooks and bandits who have seized power in Ukraine. “The summons came, I was taken to the front. Where was it to go? Otherwise, prison ... ".

One must think that among the wounded at "Azrovstal" these are the majority. And humanly, and not for the picture, they are sorry.

Ukrainian propaganda is trying its best to show the Russian army as barbaric. He calls it a horde that encroached on their exaggerated democracy. But the whole world saw how Ukrainian "democrats" in military uniform mock our prisoners of war with sadistic joy. Nothing like this happens on our side. On the contrary, we feed them normally, treat them, do not humiliate their human dignity. My personal opinion is that to mock prisoners of war is a sign of subhumanity. I am satisfied that in my civilized country, even in a mild form, there is no such disgrace with prisoners as is happening in Ukraine.

And this humane action for the treatment of Ukrainian wounded is important for us in order to feel like decent people. And it doesn't give a damn that Ukrainian and Western propagandists are talking about us there. We Russians are much higher morally than they are, as events show."

And yet, they believed in our mercy and knew for sure that they would not shoot their legs and gouge out their eyes. How did the "Azov" do with our prisoners.

Perhaps the audience here doesn't speak foreign languages but this sentence obviously should be translated as something like, "As 'Azov' have done to our soldiers taken captive"

#4  Yes, a pity the translation is such crap. Dmitry Steshin is a gifted writer. His dispatches recall the great Russian modernist writer Isaac Babel's Red Cavalry series of short stories about the Russo-Polish War of 1920: beautiful, ironic, tragicomic and lyrical at the same time.

Absolutely! This Dmitry Steshin piece appears to be influenced by A Prisoner Of The Caucasus. Russians tell me it used to be taught to every Russian schoolchild; don't know whether it still is but Steshin appears to be at least in his forties.

Anyway from his style I'd guess he's probably read it many times. Steshin's obvious and amazing sympathy for the Azovtsi is definiteky Tolstoyan: see Tolstoy's wonderful portrait of his great Chechen hero Hadji Murat

#11  Steshin expressed pity, not sympathy.

They both proceed from imaginative understanding of another hunan's plight, but "pity" is condescending. That's not accurate. Steshin never condescends. He views these flawed people as equals, fellow humans, the same way that Babel viewed the Poles or Tolstoy the Chechens. Even when he repeats a sneer lobbed at them by a Russian captor, Steshin makes it clear that the joke is on the would-be sarcastic jokester, not on the Azovtsi. That's Tolstoyan -- see Prince Andre's takedown of his fellow soldier who sneers at the Austrians after their humiliation at Schöngrabern

Agreed. The Russians and Ukrainians I know have this same attitude toward the war. They both think it's a tragic waste, basically an out of control family quarrel, pointless and brutal and caused ultimately by stupid outsiders stirring up trouble.
