Coordinated anti-Israel riots in Amsterdam were fueled by social-media, probes find
[IsraelTimes] Two local inquiries point to social media, lack of public information as contributing factors to violent, coordinated attacks on Israeli tourists after soccer game last November

Social media posts coupled with a lack of official information fueled the violent mostly peaceful, coordinated attacks on Israeli soccer fans across Amsterdam last year, two local inquiries into the events said in reports Monday.

Dozens were arrested and five people were treated in hospitals after a series of violent mostly peaceful overnight incidents following a November 7, 2024, soccer game between the Dutch team Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Organized through WhatsApp groups, local Arab and Moslem gangs attacked Israeli soccer fans and searched and demanded identification from passersby to see if they were either Israeli or Jewish, while speaking on WhatsApp of a "Jew hunt."

Israeli officials said 10 people were maimed in the violence, while hundreds more Israelis huddled in their hotels for hours, fearing they could be attacked.

The attacks followed two days of skirmishes that also saw Maccabi fans chant anti-Arab songs, vandalize a taxi and burn a Paleostinian flag.
Other teams’ yobs do that kind of thing without triggering a citywide hunt. The key symptom of Jew-hate is holding Jews, and incidents involving Jews, to a different standard.
"The events have left their mark on the city and led to fear, anger and sadness," Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema wrote in a letter to the city council on Monday, presenting one of the reports.
Kindly go fuckyourself, yerhoner.
The Rotterdam-based Institute for Safety and Crisis Management, tasked by the Amsterdam government to investigate the response to the violence, said the lack of official communication from the city allowed rumors on social media to flourish.

It noted that there was little to no official communication during the early hours of November 8, in part because the situation was so unclear.

In a separate report, the inspectorate for the Justice Ministry concluded that the police were prepared for large-scale demonstrations, not the "flash attacks" perpetrated across the city and sparked by social media.
Police turned their backs on attacks taking place in front of them, joined in, or literally delivered the Israelis/Jews they “rescued” to Moslems nearby. But the rule for Dutch police was of long standing: where Jews are involved, Dutch police officers are not required to enforce laws protecting them. For those who hate, it’s only a tiny step from not protecting to actively harming.
"Calls and images spread rapidly, reinforce existing tensions and can lead to group formation and confrontations on the street within a short period of time," the 57-page report found.

Both reports cautioned that even with improved communication, the authorities still could not have fully controlled the rapidly spreading violence.
Perhaps. Certainly the outcome would have been different had the authorities not turned away or avidly participated.
The Justice Ministry’s report noted that "incidents, such as the removal of a Paleostinian flag by Maccabi supporters, were shared, interpreted and magnified within minutes."
The Moslem were looking for excuses to act, and the authorities for excuses not to take the situation seriously.
More than a dozen people have been charged in connection with the violence against Israelis and several have already been convicted and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 11 days to six months.
See? Not serious.
Over the weekend, the public prosecution service announced it had dropped investigations into several Maccabi supporters because the city’s tram company, GVB, had deleted footage which could have been used as evidence.
Were they taking it seriously, GVB would have been reamed for deliberately destroying evidence of serious crimes against Jewish citizens and visiting Israelis to protect vicious criminals on staff.
The company replaced recording equipment at two metro stations in Amsterdam after the attacks and footage from the night was lost.

Britain
Half of London’s Social Housing Goes to ‘Migrants’
[PJMedia] In the UK, which seems to be vying for the dishonor of becoming the first great European nation to be totally taken over and destroyed by Moslems, almost half of the public housing in the capital city of London has reportedly been given to illegal migrants colonists.

GB News covered the 2021 census data showing that 48% of social housing in London has been given to foreign-born heads of household. The national average is lower, at 19% of social housing occupied by foreigners, ultimately costing British taxpayers £3.6 billion.

London is now estimated to be approaching a majority Moslem population, and it is certainly a hotspot of the demographic and cultural transformation that sadly promises to turn one of the great European countries into a sharia hellhole within the near future.

GB News added:

The Office for National Statistics figures show 376,700 lead tenants in London social housing were born outside Britannia, reports The Telegraph.

These households receive an average discount of approximately £11,600 annually compared to private rental costs in the capital.

With nearly half of all social housing allocated to foreign-born lead residents, the total cost to taxpayers exceeds £3.5billion per year.

It is important to note that this data is from 2021, and many illegal aliens (especially Moslems) have entered the country since, so it is entirely likely that by now, more than 50% of social housing in London is occupied by foreigners.

GB News did say, however, that a fair number of the foreigners in the social housing hold British passports, indicating that they have become British citizens since arriving in the UK. Labour was accused of giving tens of thousands of illegal aliens mass amnesty last year; however, not every migrant with citizenship is a desirable acquisition who has gone through a rigorous process.

Here’s another difference — The Telegraph’s analysis indicated that, in 2021, four years ago, socially rented properties were approximately £11,992 cheaper annually.

The above-mentioned estimate of £3.6 billion cost to taxpayers came from The Telegraph's analysis of London’s "general needs" social housing stock for both private and local authority providers, as compared to the median private sector rents for properties that had a similar number of bedrooms. So actually, GB News clarified, the subsidy is more accurately £7.7 billion.

Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick said, "This research shows how the huge costs of mass, low-skilled migration are often hidden from the public. When you lift up the bonnet, it's clear that the level and composition of immigration have been hugely economically harmful for decades."

The figures reveal that 35 per cent of working-age foreign-born heads of households in London's social housing are either unemployed or economically inactive.

This is despite residing in one of Britannia's most prosperous regions, where productivity per hour worked is approximately 26 per cent higher than the UK average.

The UK Office for Budget Responsibility in 2024 discovered that low-paid migrant workers imposed a financial burden of over £150,000 each on taxpayers by the time they reached retirement age.

This is what national suicide looks like.

’s Khan Younis on Monday, the military announced.

Cpt. Tal Movshovitz, 28, a deputy company commander in the 7086th Combat Engineering Battalion, from Re’ut, was killed by an bomb planted in a building.

Hours later, Staff Sgt. Naveh Leshem, 20, of the Golani Brigade’s 12th Battalion, from Nokdim, was killed, and 10 other soldiers were maimed.

According to an initial IDF probe, Leshem and the other maimed soldiers were in an armored personnel carrier during operations in Khan Younis when a terror operative placed an bomb on the outside of the vehicle.

The blast killed Leshem and seriously maimed four other troops, including an officer. It also left three soldiers in moderate condition and another three lightly hurt.

Leshem and Movshovitz were the second and third IDF fatalities in the last three days. Their deaths brought Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas

The deadly incidents came as the IDF drew some forces out of the Strip, redeploying them along the borders with Egypt and Jordan, after Gaza was downgraded to a secondary arena amid a new campaign against Iran’s nuclear program.

It also came as Hamas-controlled authorities in Gaza said 34 people had been killed by IDF fire the previous day while trying to reach a distribution site for humanitarian aid.

HAMAS AGENCY SAYS 20 KILLED, 200 WOUNDED, WAITING FOR AID
Gaza’s Hamas-linked health officials said Israeli troops killed 34 people waiting to collect food on Monday, in the latest deadly incident near an aid center run by the Israeli- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) said it had received 200 people at its field hospital in the al-Mawasi area near Rafah, without elaborating on the circumstances. In a statement on X, the group said it was "the highest number received by the Red Thingy Field Hospital in one mass casualty incident."

The Israeli military said it was looking into the reports, which have been a near-daily occurrence since GHF launched its sites on May 26.

Paleostinians say they face the choice of starving or risking death as they make their way past Israeli forces to reach the distribution points, which are run by a private contractor, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says several hundred people have been killed and hundreds more maimed in such shootings since the centers opened.

The Red Thingy field hospital nearby received some 200 injured on Monday, the highest single mass casualty event it has seen, the International Committee of the Red Thingy said in a statement. Only a day earlier, it said, around 170 were brought to the facility, most of them maimed by gunshots while trying to reach the GHF center. The Health Ministry toll made it the deadliest day around the food sites since June 2, when 31 people were killed.

Israeli troops started firing as thousands of Paleostinians massed around 4 a.m. at the Flag Roundabout before the scheduled opening time of the Rafah food center, according to Heba Jouda and Mohammed Abed, two Paleostinians who were in the crowd.

People fell to the ground, trying to take cover, they said. "Fire was coming from everywhere," said Jouda, who has repeatedly made the journey to get food for her family over the past week. "It’s getting worse day by day," she said.

The Flag Roundabout, hundreds of meters (yards) from the GHF center, has been the scene of repeated shootings. It is on the route designated by the Israeli military for people to take to reach the center.

Paleostinians over the past weeks have said Israeli troops open fire to prevent people from moving past a certain point on the road before the scheduled opening of the center or because people leave the road.

A GHF spokesperson told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Sunday that "none of the incidents to date have occurred at our sites or during operating hours." It said the incidents have involved aid-seekers who were moving "during prohibited times ... or trying to take a shortcut." It said it was trying to improve safety measures, including by recently moving the opening times from nighttime to daylight hours.

GHF has repeatedly opened sites for distribution in the middle of the night, even though the IDF has said access routes to the sites are closed during those times, placing hungry Gazooks in the dilemma of having to decide between picking up food or staying in safer areas without any aid.

The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of aid distribution that the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
says is neither impartial nor neutral. Its operations have been plagued by deadly shooting incidents in areas leading to its sites.

The IDF is not present at the sites that are protected by civilian contractors, but does secure the approach routes. The IDF has admitted that in some cases, troops fired warning shots or fired at suspects who approached them while ignoring calls to stay away from military positions.

The lack of international media access to the Strip has made verifying either side’s claims almost impossible.
Pishtosh. Everyone knows Hamas lies as they breathe — their faith requires taqqiya of them. In contrast, both Judaism and Christianity require truthfulness almost all of the time, and so it has proved for Israel since before it became an independent state in 1948. There is no equivalence here.
IRAN STRIKES COULD HELP BRING HOSTAGE DEAL, OFFICIAL CLAIMS
Israel believes that its strikes against Iran will help in talks with Hamas to reach a ceasefire deal, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Monday.

"The backing for Hamas will not be as strong," said the official. "Hamas will feel compelled to move forward with an agreement."

Weeks ago, Israel proposed a deal in which Hamas would release 10 living hostages on the first day of a 60-day ceasefire, and two more a month later, according to the official.

Families of hostages in Gaza have expressed their worry in recent days that the fighting with Iran has overshadowed the plight of their captive loved ones.

Israel launched its campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

Terror groups in Gaza continue to hold 53 hostages, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead by the IDF, and 20 who are believed to be alive. There are grave concerns for the well-being of three others, Israeli officials have said.

Nearly 1 million illegal immigrants have ‘self-deported’ under Trump, which has led to higher wages
[NYPost] While ICE arrests and deportations have grabbed headlines, President Trump is also running a separate but complementary "mass deportation" program — one that encourages aliens here unlawfully to go home voluntarily.

And if reports are correct, that plan is more successful than anyone could have imagined.

Based on government data, my organization, the Center for Immigration Studies, has conservatively estimated there are about 15.4 million illegal aliens in the United States, a 50% increase over the four tumultuous years of the Biden administration.

That’s no surprise, given how Biden and his Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas ignored congressional detention mandates and ushered millions of illegal migrants colonists into the United States.

Trump rode a wave of concerns about the costs those migrants colonists are imposing on schools, hospitals, housing, and essential government services in cities and towns across the United States to a second term.

Now that he’s back in the Oval Office, it’s up to him, "border czar" Tom Homan, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to drive the unauthorized population down and restore credibility to our immigration system.

They’ve implemented a two-track plan to tackle this onerous task.

One of those tracks relies on arrests and deportations of aliens unlawfully here, which at the outset has focused mainly on criminals (the "worst first" strategy).

The other track is more subtle but also cheaper for taxpayers and arguably much more effective —encouraging illegal migrants colonists here to self-deport.

It began with an Inauguration Day Trump directive requiring DHS to ensure all aliens present in the United States — legal and otherwise — have registered with the federal government, and to prosecute those who don’t comply.

By late February, Noem had implemented that registration program.

DHS next launched a multimillion-dollar ad campaign warning migrants colonists not to enter illegally or, alternatively, to leave voluntarily now and possibly "have an opportunity to return and enjoy our freedom and live the American Dream."

Noem also rebranded the notorious CBP One app — which the Biden administration used to funnel hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants colonists into our country — as "CBP Home," which aliens can use to "notify the U.S. Government of their intent to depart."

That rebranding coincided with an offer of financial incentives for aliens who leave voluntarily, a stipend of $1,000. That’s in lieu of costly physical deportation, which can cost taxpayers $17,100 per person on average.

How effective has self-deportation been?

One way to track the program is by checking employment numbers. One financial whiz cited by the Wall Street Journal calculated a decline in the immigrant population of 773,000 in the first four months of Trump II.

The Washington Post claims "a million foreign-born workers have exited the workforce since March." The Post frames this as "a sign of the weakening labor supply." Yet the paper also notes, "Average hourly wages accelerated, rising by 0.4 percent over the month, to $36.24 in May, as earnings continue to beat inflation in a boost to workers’ spending power."

In other words, with fewer illegal immigrants colonists, businesses have had to raise wages to attract workers.

But aliens will only leave if they believe Trump and Homan are serious about arrests, and employers know the feds are targeting shady businesses.

This voluntary exodus shouldn’t be surprising. When President Dwight Eisenhower launched his deportation roundup in 1954, nearly 10 aliens left voluntarily for each one arrested. A post-9/11 registration program also drove self-deportations.

DHS can’t arrest and deport 15.4 million illegal aliens, but if it simply enforces the law, many aliens will get the message and leave on their own — as hundreds of thousands apparently already have.

From a link in the article:
Thousands of Arabs and Muslims Could Be Deported, Officials Say
June 7, 2003
[NYT] More than 13,000 of the Arab and Muslim men who came forward earlier this year to register with immigration authorities -- roughly 16 percent of the total -- may now face deportation, government officials say.

Only a handful have been linked to terrorism. But of the 82,000 men older than 16 who registered, more than 13,000 have been found to be living in this country illegally, officials say.

Many had hoped to win leniency by demonstrating their willingness to cooperate with the campaign against terror. The men were not promised special treatment, however, and officials believe that most will be expelled in what is likely to be the largest wave of deportations after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The government has initiated deportation proceedings, and in immigrant communities across the country, an exodus has already begun.

Quietly, the fabric of neighborhoods is thinning. Families are packing up; some are splitting up. Rather than come forward and risk deportation, an unknowable number of immigrants have burrowed deeper underground. Others have simply left -- for Canada or for their homeland.

The deportations are a striking example of how the Bush administration increasingly uses the nation's immigration system as a weapon in the battle against terror.
Presumably the rest of the article is paywalled.

Inside Iran's Fordow nuclear site – a fortress in the mountains Israel likely needs the US and ‘bunker buster' bombs to topple
[World News via NYP] There’s just one Iranian nuclear facility left on Israel’s hit list — and it may be up to the US to take it out. Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant is a fortress built deep within the mountains — up to 300 feet underground.

That’s out of reach of Israel’s known munitions. Only America’s 15-ton bunker-buster bomb, GBU-57A/B Massive Ordinance Penetrator, is thought to be capable of touching it.

While Israel has surprised Western intelligence in the past with the scope of their arms and strategies, nothing the Jewish state has shown off so far suggests it has the means to penetrate Fordow’s defenses, said Nicholas Carl, a research manager at the American Enterprise Institute’s Critical Threats Project.

The Ghost in the Machine - How TikTok's PR team challenged the law by changing the conversation.
The Chinese Communist Party has a long, proud history of spycraft and theft.

1. They hack U.S. defense contractors to steal technology that is then crudely reconstructed into 5th-generation fighter jets that couldn’t outrun a decommissioned Concorde and warships whose only capabilities are 1.) combustion and 2.) floating (optional).

2. They honeypot many of America’s least fuckable local politicians.

3. They lie their way into protected facilities and strip their targets of technology transfer limb from limb.

If that wasn’t enough, they also force all foreign-owned companies conducting business in China to hire Chinese Communist Party representatives into their organizations. The explicit purpose of these party-sponsored scarecrows is to monitor that company’s compliance with CCP orthodoxy... And, of course, for spying and stealing.

So, when U.S. officials began questioning whether a Chinese-owned social media app might pose a threat to national security, you could say there was precedent for their concern:

  • December 2019: TikTok was banned on all government-owned mobile devices of U.S. Army and Navy service members.

  • December 2022: Congress banned TikTok on all House-managed mobile devices.

  • March 2023: Amidst data security concerns, the Biden Administration ordered all government agency staff to delete TikTok from federal devices and systems.

  • June 2023: State employees in 34/50 states are prohibited from using TikTok on government devices.

  • As of June 2025: TikTok is banned on all government devices for state and federal employees.

Then early last year, seemingly out of nowhere, things got very confrontational, very quickly.

In early March of 2024, the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 50-0 to advance a bill that would force ByteDance to divest from TikTok US, or face a nationwide ban.

This caught everyone off guard: The American public, the American Congress, the President (probably), and most of all TikTok.

In response, TikTok’s PR team immediately went into DEFCON 1, crafting a new comms strategy before the bill could hit the House floor for an official vote. Their message was simple:

Congress is attempting to ban TikTok.

Canadian Indigenous leader says he was 'filled with rage' before 'intense' conversation with Trump
[AP] KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) — A Canadian Indigenous leader who greeted world heads of state arriving for the Group of Seven summit says he was "filled with rage" and considered leaving before Donald Trump arrived — saying the U.S. president has "caused much pain and suffering in the world."

Instead, Steven Crowchild prayed, consulted with his peoples' leaders and ultimately opted to stay on the tarmac for a long conversation with Trump that he hopes will call more attention to promoting peace, protecting clean water and other issues key to Canada's First Nation peoples.

"It was really intense, to say the least," Crowchild told The Associated Press on Monday, recalling his lengthy encounter with Trump on Sunday night in Calgary for the G7 in nearby Kananaskis. "When I woke up on Father's Day, I didn’t anticipate I would be seeing world leaders, and one certain individual that has caused much pain and suffering in the world."

Trump Departs G7 Early Amid His Warnings to Iran-National Security Council meeting
[PJMedia] On Monday evening, President Donald Trump issued an ominous warning to Iran.

“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign,” he said in a post on Truth Social. “What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”

Moments ago, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that he’s leaving the G7 Summit in Canada:

President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.

He is reportedly leaving the summit early to go back to Washington, D.C.

Trump followed up his original post with another saying, “AMERICA FIRST means many GREAT things, including the fact that, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

President Trump clearly isn’t playing games. According to Fox News, he’s ordered the National Security Council to be ready in the White House Situation Room—an unmistakable sign that something big is going on. Military, intelligence, and diplomatic channels are all on high alert. Missiles are being prepped on both sides.

Meanwhile, the Iranian regime just turned up the heat. In a chilling escalation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has publicly warned that a strike on Israel is imminent, and they’re not mincing words. “All cities, facilities, and centers will be considered legitimate military targets,” the IRGC declared, urging evacuations across the so-called “occupied territories.”

Aerospace forces are reportedly preparing to launch within hours, as Tehran moves from vague threats to explicit ultimatums. This isn’t posturing—it’s a direct challenge, framed to strike both military and psychological blows.

Afghan National Brought to US As a ''Refugee'' by Biden Admin Pleads Guilty to Plotting Election Day Terror Attack in Oklahoma on Behalf of ISIS
[THEGATEWAYPUNDIT] A citizen of Afghanistan has pleaded guilty to federal charges that he was planning an election day terror attack in Oklahoma City.

    Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi,
…also in our archives as Nasir Ahmad Toohidi. Along with brother-in-law, Abdullah Haji Zada, Tawhedi being married to Zada's sister Maria Haji Zada. But she filed for divorce in January after their second child was born — I guess she doesn’t want to be shackled to a jailed jihadi. Oddly enough, Mr. Tawhedi’s younger brother was picked up a week later in France for exactly the same thing, because once arrested the authorities can access your devices, including your secret Telegram messages plotting parallel mayhem for Allah. Md,Tawhedi could receive 20 years for each charge….
27, pleaded guilty on Friday to conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, and receiving, attempting to receive, and conspiring to receive firearms and ammunition in furtherance of a federal crime of terrorism.

Tawhedi was brought to the United States as a ''refugee'' in 2021 during the Biden administration's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

According to a blurb from the Department of Justice, court documents state that ''Tawhedi admitted that between June 2024 and October 2024 he conspired with at least one other individual to purchase two AK-47 rifles, 500 rounds of ammunition, and 10 magazines, with the intent to carry out a mass-casualty attack on or around Election Day, Nov. 5, 2024, on behalf of ISIS. According to a criminal complaint affidavit filed in the case, Tawhedi communicated with an ISIS controller about his plan to purchase firearms for use in the terror plot, including asking the individual whether 500 rounds of ammunition would be sufficient.''

''Tawhedi and his co-conspirator, Abdullah Haji Zada,
… 18-year-old Afghan with permanent U.S. residency. Upon completion of Mr. Zada’s sentence, he will be deported and will lose his permanent residency and asylum eligibility….
were arrested on Oct. 7, 2024, after purchasing the firearms and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee,'' the blurb continued. ''Zada, 18, pleaded guilty in April 2025 to the firearms offense in connection with his role in the terror plot and is awaiting sentencing. Zada, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, entered his guilty plea as an adult and will be sentenced as an adult.''

Tawhedi faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the material support charge and up to 15 years in prison for the firearms charge. Zada faces up to 15 years in federal prison.

Following any prison sentences, both conspirators ''will be permanently removed from the United States and barred from reentry under stipulated judicial orders of removal to Afghanistan.''

Maybe, "We The People", need to demand a Constitutional Based Judicial Review Panel for all Federal Judges?

A panel that that rates and/or recommends the removal of DOJ staff, Federal and State level AG's, purchased DA's, & Judges that are clearly using the courts to push any political agenda and not the written law or US Constitution?

UN slashes global aid plans as it faces 'brutal funding cuts'
[France24] The UN on Monday said it would be slashing its annual appeal to donors by more than a third as the US and other Western countries cut their foreign aid budgets to redirect funds towards defence spending. With the year half over, the UN has so far received only 13 percent of the $44 billion in aid originally sought for 2025.

The United Nations said Monday it was drastically scaling back its global humanitarian aid plans because of the "deepest funding cuts ever" – leaving tens of millions of people facing dire straits.

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it was seeking $29 billion in funding for 2025 compared to the $44 billion originally requested in December, in a "hyper-prioritised" appeal.

Since US President Donald Trump returned to office in January, the United States – the world's top donor – has heavily slashed foreign aid, causing havoc in the humanitarian sector across the globe.

Drastic US funding cuts have had dramatic consequences for emergency aid, vaccination campaigns and the distribution of drugs to fight AIDS.

Trump's foreign aid cuts are a 'slow-running disaster', former USAID administrator says

To display this content from YouTube, you must enable advertisement tracking and audience measurement.

Other Western governments, which have previously accounted for the lion's share of humanitarian budgets, are also retrenching as they instead prioritise defence spending.

"Brutal funding cuts leave us with brutal choices," OCHA chief Tom Fletcher said in a statement.

"All we ask is one percent of what you chose to spend last year on war. But this isn't just an appeal for money – it's a call for global responsibility, for human solidarity, for a commitment to end the suffering."

    'CRUEL', 'HEARTBREAKING'
In late April, while visiting a hospital in Kandahar in Afghanistan, Fletcher warned: "Cutting funding for those in greatest need is not something to boast about ... The impact of aid cuts is that millions die."

With 2025 nearly halfway through, the UN has received only $5.6 billion out of the $44 billion originally sought for this year – a mere 13 percent.

In total, the original plan covered more than 70 countries and aimed to assist nearly 190 million vulnerable people.

Even so, that plan acknowledged there were 115 million people the UN would not be able to reach.

"We have been forced into a triage of human survival," Fletcher said Monday.

The mathematics "is cruel, and the consequences are heartbreaking".

"Too many people will not get the support they need, but we will save as many lives as we can with the resources we are given," he said.

Aid will now be directed so that it can "reach the people and places facing the most urgent needs", with those in "extreme or catastrophic conditions" as the starting point, said Fletcher.

"This will ensure that limited resources are directed where they can do the most good – as quickly as possible," the statement said.

    'RED ALERT'
Fletcher's call came as the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) issued a joint early warning report identifying worsening hunger in 13 hotspots.

Five of those places are facing an immediate risk of starvation – situations worsened by dwindling funds, the agencies said.

Sudan, the Palestinian territories, South Sudan, Haiti and Mali have communities "already facing famine, at risk of famine or confronted with catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity", said the report.

"The devastating crises are being exacerbated by growing access constraints and critical funding shortfalls," it said.

Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Nigeria are now considered of very high concern and requiring urgent attention to save lives and livelihoods, it added, with Burkina Faso, Chad, Somalia and Syria the other hotspots.

"This report is a red alert," said WFP chief Cindy McCain.

"Without funding and access, we cannot save lives. Urgent, sustained investment in food assistance and recovery support is crucial as the window to avert yet more devastating hunger is closing fast."

In late March, WFP said it was facing an "unprecedented crisis" due to a 40 percent cut in its funding for 2025, risking life-saving aid for 58 million people.

    Science & Technology
Searching for radioactive waste in the depths of the Atlantic
[France24] For nearly five decades, more than 200,000 barrels of radioactive waste were dumped in the icy depths of the northeast Atlantic. Today, no one knows precisely where these barrels are located, or what kind of state they are in. On June 15, a French-led team of scientists will set sail from Brittany in a bid to map the barrels and assess their impacts on surrounding marine ecosystems.

It had long been considered a safe way to dispose of radioactive waste. For nearly five decades, tens of thousands of tonnes of waste – sealed in watertight barrels of asphalt and cement – were dumped in international waters.

Although the practice is now banned, between 1946 and 1993, 14 European countries – including France and the UK – carried out dumping operations at more than 80 locations in the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific.

In the northeast Atlantic, home to the most concentrated stretch of this radioactive marine waste, some 200,000 barrels lie at a depth of 4,000 metres. On June 15, a team of scientists from the CNRS (France’s National Centre for Scientific Research), Ifremer (the French national institute for ocean science and technology) and the French oceanographic fleet, will set sail from the Brittany port of Brest in a bid to locate the barrels.

The team of nuclear physicists, geologists, oceanographers, biologists and marine chemists will be joined by UlyX, a 4.5 metre autonomous underwater robot that will be their eyes and ears during the 26-day expedition.

"The robot can dive to a depth of 6,000 metres,” explained geophysicist Javier Escartin, who will co-lead the mission. “It will be able to use sonar-type systems to map large areas and detect where barrels are located. It will also be able to get close to the seabed and take photographs, enabling us to assess the barrels’ condition, establish where they are scattered, and to plan further studies at a later date."

    A STABLE ENVIRONMENT
The submerged barrels, which have a lifespan of between 20 and 26 years, are now long past their expiry date.

In 2000, the environmental NGO Greenpeace filmed barrels of waste at the site closest to the French coast, the Casquets trench in the English Channel, used to dump waste by Belgium and the UK. Their footage showed the rusting barrels were badly degraded and corroded.

However, the barrels dumped at sea do not contain the most hazardous waste. Most of the waste is classified as very low-, low- and medium-level radioactive waste, according to the available data.

In addition, the radioactivity emitted by radioactive waste gradually diminishes over time. The time it takes for a radioactive substance to decrease by half is called the half-life. However, this half-life period varies greatly – depending on the type of atom or radionuclide. For instance, it is approximately two years for caesium 134, approximately 13 years for plutonium 241, approximately 30 years for caesium 137 and some 4.5 billion years for uranium 238.

The radioactive waste comes in two forms: either solid or liquid. Solid waste is surrounded by a concrete or bitumen matrix before being sealed in a watertight barrel. Only the former USSR and the United States have dumped other types of waste, such as nuclear reactor tanks, some of which still contain fuel, reported the French National Agency for Nuclear Waste Management (Andra).

The total radiological activity of the submerged waste was around 85,000 terabecquerels when it was released into the ocean, Andra added.

In the postwar period, as nuclear technology spread to many sectors of activity, developed countries viewed dumping waste in deep waters as a safe option. The deep ocean is one of the most stable environments on Earth and scientists mistakenly believed it to be deserted and devoid of life.

On their return to dry land, the scientists will spend several months studying the samples taken near the radioactive barrels. A second mission to refine the results will then be scheduled. All the data from both missions will be made available to the public in the interests of transparency.

“This is not a mission to assess whether the releases were well or badly done,” warned Escartin. "It's an opportunity to look at what was done in the past, without passing judgment, to carry out scientific studies. Afterwards, of course, we'll have to conduct a complete inventory, because we need one."

However, during the mission, the scientists will only be able to assess the condition of a small fraction of the 200,000 barrels in the northeast Atlantic. And on each dive, the UlyX autonomous robot will only be able to focus on an area of around 20 square kilometres – a drop in the ocean given that the two research areas where the submerged barrels lie covers more than 6,000 km2.

New GOP bill would cut off housing funds to sanctuary cities defying Trump DHS
[FoxNews] 'Cities that encourage illegal immigration shouldn’t be rewarded with federal housing subsidies,' says Sen Bill Hagerty

A new bill from congressional Republicans would halt housing grants to sanctuary cities like Los Angeles that do not comply with federal law and immigration authorities.

"Cities that encourage illegal immigration shouldn’t be rewarded with federal housing subsidies," said Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn. "The Trump administration has made it clear that illegal immigration will not be tolerated anywhere in the United States, and cities that defy American sovereignty will face the consequences."

Hagerty’s bill, which he previously introduced last year with then-Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, would specifically target federal housing grants provided by the community development block grant program.

The decades-old grant program, which is run by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides a flow of grant funding each year to states, cities and counties to "develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment," according to the agency.

The measure comes amid a broader push by President Donald Trump to crack down on sanctuary cities that includes threats of revoking federal funding to those that do not comply with his administration's immigration agenda.

Hagerty's bill, which is also being sponsored by Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., in the House, comes as ongoing unrest and violence continue to rage in Los Angeles, as people take to the streets to protest ICE raids in the area and around the country.

"It’s simple: if you’re going to ignore federal immigration law, don’t expect to get a dime of federal tax dollars," Norman said.

"Sanctuary cities are putting politics over public safety, and that’s unacceptable," he continued. This bill makes clear that cities choosing to harbor illegal immigrants at the expense of public safety will no longer receive taxpayer money."

Their bill outlines that any sanctuary jurisdiction that has a law, local ordinance or policy that impedes or prevents the sharing of information that identifies the immigration status of individuals, or laws that block compliance with requests from the DHS would see the federal grant funding revoked.

The housing grants were already in the White House’s crosshairs. Indeed, Trump’s skinny budget that he unveiled to Congress last month included a provision that would nix federal community development block grants entirely.

The program accounts for over $3 billion in grant funding at the federal level. The administration argued in its budget proposal that the community development block grant program "is better funded and administered at the state and local level."

In all, the president has proposed roughly $5 billion in cuts to community development programs.

Of course, we should expect the LSD's to play it as if Trump is kicking out Black-Americans and making them homeless.

When in fact these LSD's run cities and states are funding Illegal housing, using US taxpayer $$$$ intended for Section 8's and etc.

Data compiled during the Biden Puppet regime (01-11-2024).
Director of Research - Center for Immigration Studies.
Illegal immigrants make extensive use of welfare. Based on government data, we estimate that 59 percent of households headed by illegal immigrants use one or more major welfare programs, compared to 39 percent of households headed by the U.S.-born.

    Questions:
Aren't these programs restricted to US Citizens and those here Legally and officially granted asylum?

Given the abuse and redirection of US Taxpayer funds to house NON-US Citizens illegally here. Maybe some State and Local politicians need to be investigated and charged with fraud, waste and abuse?

Scientists detect mysterious radio waves coming from beneath Antarctica's ice
[NYPost] A group of researchers in Antarctica have found strange radio waves coming from below the ice.

According to the results published in the Physical Review Letters, the mysterious radio waves were discovered by the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA).

During this experiment, the researchers analyzed signals traveling to Earth using a variety of instruments.

Using balloons to send the instruments up high into the atmosphere, the goal was to gain new understandings of cosmic events throughout the universe.

According to the release, the reason Antarctica was the site of these experiments was due to little to no interference from other radio waves.

However, the researchers found radio waves transmitting from under the ice instead.

Stephanie Wissel, associate professor of physics, astronomy and astrophysics from Penn State, and one of the researchers discussed in a release by the college, revealed they discovered the radio waves while searching for a particle known as neutrinos.

“The radio waves that we detected were at really steep angles, like 30 degrees below the surface of the ice,” Wissel said in the release.

Wissel went on to explain that the radio waves should have been undetectable.

The waves would have had to go through thousands of kilometers of rock and would have been absorbed into the rocks.

She also said in the release that the team of researchers had no answer about how these neutrinos were detected.

According to Wissel, neutrinos are important to the understanding of the universe due to emitted by high-energy sources and are typically hard to detect.

Iranian - Israeli War News roundup for June 16th,2025
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. All from regnum.ru.

IRGC: Eight Iranian Soldiers Killed in Israeli Attack on Khomein
At least eight soldiers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces) were killed in an Israeli attack on the Iranian city of Khomein, the IRGC said in a statement.

"As a result of the Zionist regime's attacks and actions that provoke instability, six IRGC soldiers and two Basij fighters who defended Khomein were martyred on the morning of June 16 while carrying out their mission to protect the Islamic Revolution and defend dear Iran," the ISNA agency quotes the statement as saying.

Earlier on June 16, YJC reported that 10 soldiers from the IRGC air defense forces were killed in northwestern Iran while repelling an Israeli air attack. On the same day, Tehran announced that it would continue the operation against Israel until the complete destruction of this state in its current form.

IRGC says Iran intends to strike Israel until early morning
Iran plans to launch continuous strikes on Israel until the early morning of June 17. This was reported by the Tasnim agency.

"A little earlier, we launched the ninth wave of the combined operation "True Promise - 3" using missiles and drones. This operation will last continuously until early morning," journalists clarified, citing the official representative of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, part of the Iranian Armed Forces) Ali Mohammad Naini.

Earlier, the IRGC leadership noted Iran's readiness for a full-scale and protracted war with Israel.

Iran Destroys Israel's Long-Range Air Defense System - Media
Iran destroyed a long-range air defense system during strikes on Israel. This was reported on June 16 by the Fars agency, citing a source.

“An Iranian drone destroyed an Israeli long-range air defense system,” the journalists clarified.

It is noted that the operation was planned in advance. It involved Iranian stealth drones. The attack was carried out in central Israel, the source explained.

In total, since the beginning of Operation True Promise 3, Iranian forces have carried out about 550 drone strikes on Israel, the authors noted.
Lots of drone strikes, sadly with minimal effect.

IAEA: All 15,000 centrifuges at Iran’s main enrichment plant likely ‘severely damaged or destroyed’
[IsraelTimes] Damage at Natanz believed to be result of airstrike on the facility’s power supply, leading to an outage, which in turn harmed fragile machines that spin at extremely high speed.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi told the board no damage was seen at the separate Fordo enrichment plant dug deep into a mountain, later telling the BBC: “There is very limited, if any, damage registered [there].”

While the IAEA has not been able to carry out inspections since the attacks, it makes extensive use of satellite imagery.

Grossi elaborated on the damage to four buildings at the Isfahan nuclear complex, including a uranium-conversion facility that turns “yellowcake” uranium into uranium hexafluoride, the feedstock for centrifuges, so it can be enriched to higher fissile purity.

“Four buildings were damaged in Friday’s attack: the central chemical laboratory, a uranium conversion plant, the Tehran reactor fuel manufacturing plant, and the UF4 [uranium tetrafluoride] to EU [enriched uranium] metal processing facility, which was under construction,” he said.

, and Judea and Samaria [West Bank] are now operational in Iran," Defrin said.

Since the start of the conflict, the IDF said, it had destroyed over 120 Iranian ballistic missile launchers, which it said is a third of what Iran had.

"These are large launchers, some mounted on trucks and deployed across Iran. Each launcher was ready to fire dozens of missiles at Israel’s home front and strategic assets. These strikes caused the regime to launch only half of the missiles it had planned in last night’s barrage," Defrin said.

"The Israeli Air Force is pushing eastward," he said. "We will reach more targets, conduct further strikes, and continue to act in pursuit of the operation’s objective, to neutralize the existential threat from Iran, from its nuclear project to the regime’s missile array."

On Monday afternoon, the IDF issued an unprecedented evacuation warning for a large section of Tehran, ahead of Israeli strikes.

Defrin said that "in addition to the launchers, we also struck missile storage and production sites" in the overnight strikes. IAF fighter jets also attacked over 20 command centers belonging to the Quds Force and the Iranian military in Tehran, relying on precise intelligence, the military said.

The Quds Force is a powerful branch within the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps that sends fighters abroad and directs and funds foreign terror groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

The IDF said the centers it struck were used by the Quds Force "to plan terror attacks against Israel via the Iranian regime’s proxies in the Middle East."

He said the "headquarters were deliberately placed in civilian buildings and high-rises."

"The regime’s leaders believed that doing so would hide them and keep them immune. They were mistaken. The Intelligence Directorate located them, and the Israeli Air Force struck them with precision and accuracy," he said.

Additionally, the military said the IAF conducted waves of strikes in Isfahan, central Iran, overnight, hitting over 100 targets.

In the morning, the military said the IAF identified several trucks, carrying surface-to-air missile launchers and other weapons, moving from western Iran toward Tehran "in an attempt to escape IDF strikes."

The strikes continued on Monday afternoon, with a military official telling The Times of Israel that the IAF had begun a new wave of Arclight airstrike

    s in central Iran.

The Tasnim news agency also claimed Israel bombed a fire department building in Musiyan in the western province of Ilam, publishing a video of smoke rising from the site.

The semi-official news outlet, which is closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, said a separate strike took place in the central region city of Kermanshah. It claimed a hospital was damaged in the attack, carrying a video showing shattered glass, collapsed ceilings, and extensive damage in patient rooms.

    The Mehr News Agency

reported that Israel hit sites in Parchin. The Iranian outlet posted a video showing air defense systems activating in the area in response to strikes.

    SPY CHIEF KILLED
The IDF confirmed Monday that four Iranian intelligence officials, including the chief of the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, were killed in an IAF strike in Tehran the day before.

The IDF said the strike carried out by fighter jets hit a building in the Iranian capital where several Iranian intelligence officials were gathered.

The strike killed IRGC intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Kazemi, his deputy Hassan Mohaqiq, and the intelligence chief of the IRGC Quds Force and his deputy, the military said.

On Sunday, Iran confirmed the deaths of Kazemi, Mohaqiq, and another intelligence official.

"These bigwigs played a central role in formulating the situation assessment in Iran and in planning terror activities against Israel, the West, and countries in the region," the IDF said.

    350 MISSILES IN THREE DAYS
While Israel has been attacking Iran, the Islamic Theocratic Republic has launched some 350 ballistic missiles at Israel since Friday, the vast majority of which were intercepted, according to fresh IDF statistics.

Some 40 missiles were fired in the latest barrage at around 4 a.m. Monday, which struck central Israel and the Haifa area. There were three major impact sites in the overnight attack, which killed eight people and maimed 95. Four were killed in Petah Tikva, three were killed in Haifa, and one was killed in Bnei Brak. In all, 24 people have been killed in Iran’s ballistic missile attacks since Friday.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed its latest attack employed a new method that caused Israel’s multi-layered defense systems to target each other, but Israel has long acknowledged that its air defense array is not hermetic, with 5-10% of the missiles "leaking" through and impacting Israel, officials said.

The total includes missiles that the IDF says it did not try to shoot down "according to protocol," allowing them to strike open areas without causing damage to any critical infrastructure, as well as missiles it failed to intercept that hit urban areas and caused casualties and damage.

Most of Iran’s ballistic missile fire has been aimed at Tel Aviv and Haifa — which are densely populated — and to a lesser degree, the Beersheba area. Thus, the few missiles that are not intercepted are likely to cause harm.

UK’s Ambrey says maritime incident near Strait of Hormuz not security related

    By REUTERS
British maritime security firm Ambrey now says the cause of an incident 22 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates, near the Strait of Hormuz, is not security-related.

The event unfolded as tensions escalated between Israel and Iran, with both nations exchanging attacks for a fifth consecutive day following Israel’s widescale strikes on Friday aimed at preventing Tehran from building an atomic weapon.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key transitway for about a fifth of the world’s oil, lies between Oman and Iran and links the Gulf north of it with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.

There is no immediate response to Reuters’ request for comment from the Emirati foreign ministry or the Khor Fakkan container terminal in the early hours of Tuesday.

    Israel-Palestine-Jordan
'Little Lightning': Why Israel's 'Blitzkrieg' Didn't Go According to Plan
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
    by Leonid Tsukanov

[REGNUM] Israel's Operation Lion Force against Iran could well go down in history as the Middle East's lightning war. Especially since Israel based it on the concept of a preventive strike, which it had already used more than once. And it allocated a lot of forces - almost as many aircraft participated in the first raid as in the Six-Day War of 1967.

However, Tel Aviv apparently did not achieve a "small victory". Tehran not only withstood the blows, but also launched a counter-offensive, which is becoming increasingly difficult for the Israelis to repel with each passing hour.
That’s certainly one perspective of events.
    CRITICAL MISCALCULATIONS
In preparing for the operation to “pacify” Iran, Israel clearly underestimated its opponent.

First of all, it was the general ambition and belief in the power of the first strike that let them down. Tel Aviv attacked the “holy of holies” for modern Iran – its nuclear infrastructure.

Part of the uranium enrichment plant at Natanz was destroyed, and the heavy water production complex at Arak and the Fordow facility, where the Israelis believe they were stockpiling weapons-grade uranium, were attacked several times.

However, none of the facilities were ultimately completely destroyed.
Completely destroyed is not necessary. Rendered inoperable and very difficult to repair — that will do the trick for the short term, while rendering the human side of the program non-functional, as it were, will take care of the possibility of rehabilitating the thing for long enough that anything thereafter won’t matter.
Even in Natanz, which suffered the most, only the workshop with the latest centrifuges burned, while the rest of the infrastructure more or less survived. The damage to the underground complexes was even less.
Possibly Mr. Tsukanov has fallen behind recent reports…
The insufficient scale of destruction of the Iranian nuclear perimeter, from the point of view of Israeli "hawks", is partly compensated by the blow to its personnel potential. In less than a week, Israel eliminated about a dozen and a half nuclear scientists, including the heads of research programs, as well as their superior curators in uniform.

But he quickly paid for this later, too, by missing a missile strike on the Weizmann Institute, one of the country's leading research centers.

The second miscalculation was the excessive reliance on subversive intelligence work. Of course, the military intelligence and Mossad commandos deployed to Iranian territory greatly helped the army on the first day of the operation, disrupting the air defense systems and ensuring free entry of Israeli aircraft into Iranian airspace.

However, it was not possible to consolidate the success - closer to the second half of the day, the Iranian air defense was restored, and Israel began to lose its first aircraft in the raids.

In addition, a hunt for saboteurs began on the ground. The Basij mobilization forces (essentially a local militia and reserve troops "in one bottle"), whose human resources amount to several million fighters, quickly organized dense patrols of areas of Israeli aviation activity and helped to detain enemy agents. Further actions to launch kamikaze UAVs from Iranian territory were thwarted.

    SPECIAL SPIRIT
Finally, the Israelis underestimated the moral and psychological state of the Iranians. The General Staff of the Israeli army and the government residence "Balfour" believed that it would be enough to shake the ruling regime, and the Iranians, dissatisfied with life, would overthrow it themselves. Especially since the country had previously been repeatedly shaken by large-scale protests due to economic and social problems.

However, Iranians, on the contrary, demonstrated unity around the flag.

Something similar happened during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), when echelons of Iranian volunteers (the so-called “Karbala caravans”) went to the front with almost no preparation to hold back the rapid advance of Saddam Hussein’s army.

Of course, some fringe forces – such as the Kurdish-Iranian rebel group the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) – tried to take advantage of the turmoil of the early days of the conflict and call for an uprising against the ayatollahs’ regime, but they were unsuccessful.

Moreover, the operatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) nipped the activity of the “rebellion headquarters” in the bud, arresting most of the PAK leaders and activists who had made their way to Iran. The option of organizing an “opposition march on the capital” according to the Syrian scenario disappeared for the Israelis by itself.

    COUNTERMEASURES
Even taking into account the considerable damage inflicted on Iran in the first day of the clash, Tehran recovered relatively quickly and found the strength to retaliate. By the end of the day on June 13, the first kamikaze UAVs and ballistic missiles were heading towards Israel.

And although the density of fire, at first glance, was comparatively small - in any case, less than during the first retaliatory operations - the strikes were more destructive.

Tehran not only moved away from the tactics of “symbolic launches,” but actually mirrored the Israelis’ tactics by specifically attacking Israeli nuclear facilities. Among other things, the nuclear center in Dimona and the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, as well as key sea and air ports, came under attack.

The latter category of targets has proven particularly vulnerable given Israel's heavy dependence on foreign trade and tourism.

It is also worth paying attention to the growing number of successful hits by Iran and its proxies on selected targets. In the last two days, it has been growing progressively. The Israeli air defense system, apparently, is experiencing severe overloads and cannot independently repel attacks with different types of ammunition.

Moreover, Israel's allies and partners are in no hurry to intervene in the air war - except in cases where UAVs and missiles enter their airspace: the risk of provoking Iran to expand the geography of strikes is too great.

Tel Aviv still has some hope in relation to the US and Great Britain.

London and Washington have promised to help protect Israeli airspace, and the Pentagon has even begun a hasty transfer of aircraft and naval forces to the combat zone – apparently, for now, only to show the flag and provide cover for Israel from the sea.

However, it is possible that the United States will sooner or later have to intervene in the conflict more actively in one form or another. Especially since, despite the failure of the "little victorious one," the Israeli authorities clearly do not plan to back down.

'Tanks will drive through as if on a avenue.' How Russia's northern neighbors are arming themselves
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
    by Victor Lavrinenko

[REGNUM] The militarization of the countries lying on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea near Russia's borders continues, but this process is not without its creaks.

In Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, decisions are being made to further increase military spending and purchase more and more weapons.

But recently, in these countries, the voices of critics have begun to be heard, dissatisfied either with the allocation of ever- increasing funds for militarization to the detriment of other needs, or with the fact that funds are spent in a senseless manner without taking into account the experience of modern wars.

    FINLAND: OPPOSITION UNHAPPY WITH SPENDING
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo recently announced that there is supposedly a consensus in the country between all parties regarding the “need to strengthen defence.” Orpo admits, however, that this “is fraught with difficulties.”

The head of government explained: "The population is aging, so our expenses are constantly increasing by billions. We simply need to find a solution, and economic growth is the only sustainable way." Orpo reminds that "the schedule for increasing the defense budget is calculated until 2032, so future governments will also have to look for financing solutions."

The prime minister warned that Finland's military spending will now grow by billions of euros each year. By 2029, the government plans to increase this type of spending to 3% of GDP, which would mean an annual increase in the military budget of 1.5–2 billion euros.

The additional funds that will be poured into the army and other security agencies will be directed primarily toward increasing the number of ground forces, strengthening the eastern border and enhancing air defense.

However, the opposition Greens, the Social Democratic Party and the Centre Party have criticised the plans. Green faction leader Oras Tynkkynen is surprised that "the government can so easily tie the hands of successive governments in terms of spending".

The oppositionist is indignant: "I don't remember Finland ever making such large-scale decisions so hastily and on such flimsy grounds. The consequences of these five percent on an annual level amount to billions of euros." Tynkkynen is convinced that the increase in military spending will have a negative impact on the well-being of the people.

In this regard, Markku Jokisipilä, director of the Centre for Parliamentary Studies, notes that Tynkkynen was the first Finnish politician to express criticism regarding the swelling military budget – no one had allowed themselves to do this for over three years.

Political scientist Emilia Palonen from the University of Helsinki also believes that the discussion started by Tynkkynen indicates a clear change in sentiment.

    LITHUANIA: CALL FOR GRADUATES
Last spring, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense reported that from last year to the end of the first quarter of this year, 190 thousand residents (the total population of the republic is 2.6 million people) had completed courses “on civil resistance and sustainability.”

These courses (they were given the unambiguous name "Preparation Courses for Day X") were announced in 2023 and started last year. During them, residents are taught first aid, as well as various skills - for example, how to weave anti-drone nets or how to behave during shelling.

Both career military personnel and members of the “Riflemen’s Union” – the name given to the Lithuanian territorial militia, which is recruited on a voluntary basis – are recruited as instructors.

In addition, in November 2024, the Ministry of Defense opened courses for schoolchildren on how to operate unmanned aerial vehicles. It is expected that by 2027–28, clubs will be established in all Lithuanian counties where children will be given relevant knowledge.

In April and May 2025, free courses were organized for employees of forty large Lithuanian companies: they are taught “unarmed resistance”, survival skills in extreme situations and first aid, cybersecurity and “recognizing disinformation”.

A year ago, the Seimas approved the introduction of universal military service. According to the new law, school graduates will be called up for military service. Young men aged 18 to 22 are subject to mandatory conscription for nine months. At the same time, future conscripts will not be able to enroll in universities until they have completed their service.

The amendments will come into force in 2026, and this year future conscripts have already begun to undergo mass medical examinations. During 2025, 3,800 young people will be called up for service, selected according to the previous principle - by lottery. From 2027, more than 6,000 people are expected to be called up for compulsory military service annually.

Lithuania had previously agreed to buy 44 Leopard tanks from Germany. The initial agreement stipulated that the first company of tanks would arrive in the country in 2029, with a full tank battalion to be formed in 2034.

However, Vilnius wants to speed up tank deliveries, as it hopes to fully deploy its own tank units by 2030. On June 10, it became known that the Ministry of Defense is negotiating the organization of assembly of purchased tanks directly in Lithuania.

At the same time, Lithuanian military experts are concerned that the measures taken are not enough and that the enemy army will not have much trouble capturing Vilnius. Thus, retired lieutenant Vladas Sakalauskas calls for building more fortifications.

"No other country has its capital so close to the border. In addition to the fact that we have no depth of defense, we also have no defense system on the border, because here the army can drive like on an avenue. A reinforced column of tanks can arrive very easily and quickly," warns Sakalauskas.

Also, the opinion has been repeatedly voiced in Lithuania that tanks are useless in modern warfare, as they are easily destroyed by drones. It has been suggested that the intention of the Lithuanian authorities to purchase a large number of Leopards is connected with the desire to simply "master" and "saw off" the money.

    ESTONIA: "POOR-QUALITY" MILITIAS
In May, Estonia hosted the largest local army exercise of the year, Hedgehog 2025, a three-week exercise involving over 16,000 servicemen. In addition, soldiers from units from the UK, France, the US, Canada, Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland and Portugal also joined the exercise.

Exercise Hedgehog was part of the larger NATO exercise Steadfast Deterrence 25, which was led from NATO Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFCBS), Netherlands.

In addition, "Hedgehog" served as a preparatory phase for the participation of Estonian military personnel in the Griffin Lightning 25 tactical exercise, aimed at practicing the regional plans of NATO's North-East Corps.

Following the results of the Hedgehog exercise, the Commander of the Defence Forces, Major General Andrus Merilo, stated that “the reserves are strong and combat-ready.”

Last spring, Estonia received six HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems from the United States. The arrival of these weapons caused a burst of enthusiasm in Tallinn. The Estonian military also reminds that they also have Blue Spear 5G SSM anti-ship missiles with a firing range of up to 290 kilometers.

Tallinn believes that with the help of these missiles, if necessary, they will be able to close off the Gulf of Finland to the Russian fleet.

Another spring news item is that Estonia has decided to invest 100 million euros in an explosives factory. Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that the enterprise is proposed to be opened in an industrial park in the south of the country. The explosives will be produced using Estonia's existing oil shale deposits.

However, while the coalition parties are trying to give the population the impression that Estonia is in good shape when it comes to combat readiness, the opposition disagrees. Martin Hallik, a member of the right-wing Pro Patria party, is concerned that the authorities are not raising the issue of the true state of the territorial defence units, which lack both drones and the people capable of operating them.

In the event of mobilization, 43,000 men and women could stand up for arms in Estonia. At first glance, this figure is impressive, but a significant portion of this number are reservists aged 30 to 60, who were included in the territorial defense (Kaitseliit) three years ago.

They had not been there before, had not participated in regular training, and the skills they acquired in the army were either forgotten or simply outdated. “The problem is aggravated by the fact that even recently acquired skills are not enough in light of the experience of the Ukrainian war,” Hallik emphasizes.

    LATVIA: NOT ENOUGH SOLDIERS
On June 10, the Latvian Ministry of Defense published a list of ten goals of the country's military policy. The head of the department, Andris Spruds, fears the "Russian threat." Therefore, the main priority is declared to be "security," which is supposed to be ensured by creating more training grounds and purchasing weapons.

It is planned to strengthen the borders, build a comprehensive air defense system, attract contingents from many NATO countries, purchase armored personnel carriers, artillery, shells and drones.

Also in June, it became known that Special Operations Forces (SOF) are being created in Latvia, which, as stated, will be capable of performing any tasks according to NATO standards. The SOF functions will include "unconventional combat operations", "guerrilla warfare" and "asymmetric combat methods".

Another piece of news from June: Sweden will supply Latvia with 18 Archer artillery units — 155-mm self-propelled howitzers manufactured by the British company BAE Systems. Sweden previously supplied similar systems to Ukraine. A training program for soldiers and artillerymen of the Latvian army by Swedish specialists is planned for 2026.

According to Spruds, Latvia needs an army with a minimum of 60,000 personnel (at the moment, the country can put 31,000 people under arms, taking into account reservists and members of the territorial militia "Zemessardze").

President Edgars Rinkēvičs gives a more realistic figure – he wants to raise this number to at least 38,000. According to the assessment of the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Liene Gatere, this can be achieved, but not in the near future.

Gatere's logic is not entirely clear, since no preconditions for the end of the demographic crisis that is destroying Latvia are visible.
