[PJMedia] After a contentious hearing in which Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle failed to answer some of the most basic questions surrounding the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump on July 13, the House Oversight Committee called on Cheatle to resign.
Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) signed a letter, which the committee sent to Cheatle and released on social media. It’s an impressive show of bipartisanship.
The letter reads:
Director Cheatle: On July 13, 2024, the United States Secret Service under your leadership failed to protect former President Donald Trump from an assassination attempt that took the life of Corey Comperatore and seriously injured at least two other people.
Today, you failed to provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures. In the middle of a presidential election, the Committee and the American people demand serious institutional accountability and transparency that you are not providing. We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people.

This bipartisan call for Cheatle to resign her post is especially remarkable after what we saw from some Democrats during the hearing. This morning, I wrote about how Raskin used his time at the beginning of the hearing to call for gun control.
He wasn’t the only one. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Jasmine Crockett (D-Tenn.) spewed even more egregious gun-grabbing nonsense.
Rep. Ayanna Presley (D-Mass.) didn’t ask Cheatle any questions; instead, she accused Republicans of being “racist” and “sexist” because they dared question diversity efforts within the Secret Service.
At this point, there’s nothing else Cheatle can do but resign. Whether she will remains to be seen, but it’s impressive to see bipartisan calls for her to resign after such ridiculous behavior from Democrats on the committee.

Didn't watch the hearing yet. All the accepting responsibility stuff is nice, but I am more interested in what went wrong and what the Secret Service would do next time to make sure the person they are guarding does not get shot in head. When you f**k up this badly, you should learn something from it.

The teenager is seen walking up to the 71-year-old man while he was talking on the phone on a street corner in the southeastern Brazilian city of São Paulo last Friday.
The victim appeared as he was about to cross to the opposite sidewalk when the teen suddenly grabbed his cell phone and took off running.

Authorities in the Philippines have uncovered secret hospitals that offer plastic surgery for fugitives and scammers seeking to evade arrest, according to reports.
"You can create an entirely new person out of those," said Winston John Casio, a spokesman for the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission.
Police raided one such hospital in the southern suburbs of Manila, leading to the discovery of a second hospital. Authorities will shut down both hospitals "in the coming weeks," the BBC reported.
An anonymous tip told the authorities that an unlicensed hospital was operating in Pasay, located just five miles south of the capital Manila. An intelligence officer confirmed to the commission that the hospital existed, though it was initially framed as a "stand-alone" operation.
Authorities arrested two Vietnamese doctors, one Chinese doctor, one Chinese pharmacist and a Vietnamese nurse, finding that none of them possessed a license to practice medicine in the country.
The hospitals expand the country’s increasingly distressing "Philippines offshore gaming operator" (POGO), which officials have alleged has ties to China. POGO presents itself as an online casino, but has actually served as a front for a "scam center" with hundreds of workers, including Chinese nationals.
The POGO centers have proven a high-profile concern for the Philippines, which worries worry about widespread criminal activity. The mayor of Bamban in May found herself in the middle of a scandal when the Bureau of Immigration opened an investigation into whether she had constructed her identity and personal history to run for office.
Officials alleged that Mayor Alice Guo could in fact be a Chinese national who helped facilitate the establishment of the POGO scam center in Bamban, which facilitated "love scams" where scam workers adopted fake identities to establish romantic relationships online and extort money from a victim.

"That's what happened to me."
She said that it was unbelievable that she was the one who suffered retaliation when the HHS's Office of Refugee Resettlement Unaccompanied Children program should have been changed to protect the minors at the border.
"They knew they had a problem," she said. "They could have easily changed the system to make it safe for children. And instead, they decided to silence me when I brought these concerns. These are grave concerns."
On Tuesday, Rodas and fellow whistleblower Deborah White participated in a roundtable discussion about the exploitation of missing migrant children. It was hosted by Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis.
Rodas said during her testimony that unaccompanied migrant children are funneled through a network of U.S. government agencies, contractors and nongovernmental organizations. She said that people working for these agencies and organizations have little or no training on how to protect children from trafficking or abuse.
She said that the Office of Refugee Resettlement Unaccompanied Children program is falsely advertised as a family reunification program.
"Less than 40% of the children are going to their parents," Rodas said.
She said that in 2021 it was revealed that MS-13 gang members were sponsoring some of these unaccompanied migrant children that have come to the U.S. southern border.
The Department of Justice identifies the gang MS-13 as "well-organized" and "heavily involved in lucrative illegal enterprises" and "being notorious for its use of violence to achieve its objectives."
Johnson during the roundtable discussion asked Rodas if U.S. government agencies are willingly allowing children to be placed in the hands of MS-13 due to the overwhelming state of the open border policies under the Biden administration. "Yes, senator," Rodas responded. "I wish I could tell you differently."
Whistleblower White said on the John Solomon Reports podcast that the federal effort to find children safe shelter once in America was rushed like an assembly line, raising the risk that children got placed in unsafe shelters or with sponsors who weren’t properly vetted.
“The mantra was speed over safety,” White said.
Multiple Republican lawmakers have criticized the Biden administration's open border policies, arguing that those policies are the reason all this abuse and trafficking is occurring.
Last year it was reported that the Biden administration lost track of about 85,000 children who entered the U.S. without an adult.
"If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I do not believe I could accept that the government is responsible for using billions of taxpayer dollars annually to put children into the homes of gang members," Rodas told Just the News. "It's unthinkable. It's shameful."

[cgmf, from WaPo, hat tip Dallas Morning News] Southern California Edison, one of the country’s largest power companies, has just announced a deal to buy electricity from a seven-year-old start-up called Fervo Energy. Like other energy companies, Fervo will use hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," to tap an energy source trapped deep underground.
But instead of oil and gas, Fervo is hunting heat, a more abundant resource that neither pollutes the air nor contributes to global warming. The heat will fuel a new type of power plant: an enhanced geothermal plant.
Coal power plants, for example, burn coal to boil water and pump steam through the turbine. They make reliable electricity, but they also emit pollution and greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
In contrast, conventional geothermal power plants capture steam from natural underground hot springs in places such as Iceland or the Geysers in Northern California. These require a rare combination of geologic conditions — heat, underground water and porous rock.
Enhanced geothermal plants use technology pioneered by oil and gas drillers to reproduce the conditions of a conventional geothermal well. This makes it possible to extract heat in many more places. Doesn't fracking cause earth tremors? Even in California?
When completed in 2028, the new enhanced geothermal plant will add 400 megawatts of carbon-free electricity to the power grid (Southern California Edison has agreed to buy 320 megawatts; the rest will go to smaller power providers.)That is less than one-fifth of the generating capacity of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, which by itself provides nearly a tenth of California’s electricity.
Fracking for heat releases no greenhouse gases. But to meaningfully contribute to emissions cuts, enhanced geothermal will need to expand quickly. Developers say they are hamstrung by a needlessly long permitting process, which takes years to complete. Lawmakers in both houses of Congress have introduced bipartisan bills that would make it as easy to drill for heat as for oil and gas.
Enhanced geothermal’s biggest constraint is how much heat can be found underground. The hottest rock is out West, according to a recent government assessment, but cooler rock formations could fuel power plants in Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and at least a dozen other states. To extract enough heat in places with cooler rock, geothermal developers must drill 15,000 feet or deeper, which is more expensive. Faster drilling helped the oil and gas industry dig deeper to squeeze more profits out of shale rock, and analysts expect geothermal drilling speed to similarly improve.
Even in the West, where the rock is known to be hot, a government-funded demonstration project helped pave the way for Fervo’s wells. That project, known as FORGE, began in 2015 and did not generate power until 2022.
"I do not believe that any of the advances that have happened right now, with commercial liftoff of this technology, would have happened without federal dollars," said Lauren Boyd, the director of the Energy Department’s Geothermal Technologies Office, who managed the FORGE project.

[ZH] Early Monday, Ukraine succeeded in its first successful drone attack on a major Russian refinery since mid-May. Dozens of drones were launched from Ukraine with the objective of crippling Russia's energy infrastructure.
Bloomberg reports Rosneft PJSC's major Tuapse refinery in southern Russia was damaged in a drone attack overnight, which sparked a fire, Russian officials said.
"Infrastructure of the oil refinery in Tuapse was damaged as a result of falling drone debris," Russian authorities wrote in a Telegram statement, adding the fire has since been contained.
Some of the clearest video so far of this conflict shows one of the Ukrainian drones striking the Tuapse refinery.
In a separate Telegram statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said 75 Ukrainian drones were intercepted. At least eight of those drones were shot down near the refinery.
Ukraine has spent much of this year focusing on launching attacks on Russia's energy complex (an attempt to paralyze Moscow's war financing). The Tuapse refinery is Russia's largest on the Black Sea, with an annual refining capacity of 12 million metric tons (or averaging 240,000 barrels per day). It supplies naphtha, fuel oil, vacuum gas oil, and high-sulfur diesel to mainly China, Turkey, Malaysia, and Singapore.
"This is the first successful Ukrainian attack on a major Russian refinery since mid-May, and it comes just as Russia's oil-processing industry is on track to raise its runs to a six-month high to meet growing domestic fuel demand," Bloomberg noted. The last major attack on Tuapse was in mid-May. We penned a note covering the incident titled "Desperate Ukraine Launches Massive Kamikaze Drone Attack Against Russian Black Sea Coast, Sparking Fire At Major Refinery."
Despite Ukraine's targeting of Russian energy infrastructure to slow crude product exports, energy analysts are still forecasting growth for Russia's oil-processing volumes through the end of August.

[JPost] A terror attack occurred near the Gaza border Kibbutz of Netiv Ha’asara on Monday, the IDF and police said.
"A suspect arrived at the entrance of Netiv HaAsara, exited his vehicle, and threatened with a knife members of the community’s rapid response team operating in the area," the IDF later stated of the incident.
The knife-wielding terrorist was thwarted after the rapid response team opened fire on the suspect.
Israel's emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA), paramedics reported that the terrorist had been apprehended and that a 61-year-old woman was suffering from shock.
NO ONE WAS WOUNDED PHYSICALLY, SAYS MDA
MDA added that "no one was physically wounded."
MDA paramedics Noa Abitbul and Yossi Smadga recounted what they saw upon arrival. "We were told that a terrorist had arrived at the location, attempted to stab, and was thwarted by the security forces.
"We screened the area to make sure there were no physical injuries. A 61-year-old female suffering from anxiety symptoms is being treated on the scene by MDA teams and, as for now, does not need evacuation to a hospital."
According to Israeli media reports, the terrorist was a Canadian citizen who arrived at the entrance to the kibbutz, claiming "the IDF is killing civilians in Gaza."
The IDF later confirmed that the suspect is a foreign national. According to the military, the individual arrived in the area from within Israel as opposed to having crossed over from Gaza.
The attacker — a Moslem Canadian — tried to stab IDF soldiers stationed at the entrance to the town.
Sources say the terrorist landed in Israel yesterday, rented a car for two weeks, and paid for it in advance. This morning, he left Ashdod, passed through Yad Mordechai, and then arrived at Netiv HaAsara.
He was identified by a public broadcaster as Qawarshi Zakaria Adam, a Canadian citizen.
The IDF claimed the man threatened the armed civilian unit stationed at the entrance of Netiv HaAsara, a town near the Gaza border, with a knife on Monday morning.
Footage of the killing showed three soldier-looking civilians shoot the man moving towards them, with Adam then collapsing to the ground. Photos from the scene show Adam dead in a pool of his own blood as police and soldiers stand near the body investigating the killing.

The official further explained to Israel Hayom that "the Houthis use tens of millions of Yemenis as human shields when they send a rocket and kill an Israeli civilian. They will cause the ports to go bankrupt. Israel is not like Britain and the USA, which attack (only) military targets" - implying that Israel deliberately strikes civilian targets.
In game theory that’s called a Tit For Tat strategy… but Israel escalated the punishment side to help the Houthis grasp the lesson.
"The conflict is between Israel and the Palestinians. We do not have a direct conflict with Israel."

The former official also admitted that the pro-Iranian terrorist group doesn't even have an air defense system capable of protecting their country.
"They are sending these rockets when they are unable to shoot down even one Israeli plane," he continued, expressing fear that Israel might impose a naval and air blockade on Yemen - and that the civilian population would pay the price.
The Israeli strikes on the Houthis on Hodeidah, which occurred the day before the Israel Hayom report was published, came in response to the Houthi drone strike in Tel Aviv.
The operation took two hours and 50 minutes for the IDF F-15s, F-35s, and other fighter jets, which carried out around ten airstrikes.

The IDF confirmed on Monday that two hostages, Alexander Dancyg and Yagev Buchshtab, are dead and that they were probably mistakenly killed by IDF forces during battles in Khan Yunis some months ago.
The deaths of human shields are the responsibility of those hiding behind them.
Dancyg, 76, was kidnapped on October 7 from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Buchshtab, 35, was seized from Kibbutz Nirim. Dancyg, born in Poland, was a historian and a Holocaust educator.
Buchshtab and his wife, Rimon Kirsht Buchshtab, 36, who worked in alternative medicine, were taken hostage from Nirim on October 7. She was released from captivity on November 28 as part of a hostage-prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas.
The IDF operated in Khan Yunis from December 1 until April 7.
On March 10, Hamas issued an update that the two hostages had been killed. However, Hamas has engaged in a variety of psychological warfare tactics. While there are cases where the IDF has mistakenly killed hostages, there are dozens of cases where Hamas killed hostages they were detaining and then later tried to blame the IDF.
The military had therefore not accepted Hamas’s March announcement – until now.
However, the IDF recently acquired new unspecified intelligence, which, combined with Hamas’s announcement and other information, confirmed that the two hostages are in fact dead.
Despite the announcement coming on the same day that the IDF is calling for an evacuation of Palestinians from Khan Yunis, seemingly in preparation for a re-invasion of the area, the military said there was no connection between the two events.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc, released his official 13-page preliminary findings of his office's investigation into the assassination attempt of former President Trump.
Trump survived the assassination attempt on July 13 at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where alleged gunman Thomas Mathew Crooks, 20, opened fire, killing one spectator and injuring several others, including Trump, who suffered injuries to his ear.
Shortly following the incident, Johnson's office began contacting federal, state and local government entities, as well as private companies, to solicit information about the security failures at the rally, the senator's office said. The preliminary findings are based on the initial information Johnson's office obtained after the shooting.
The senator's office said he is sharing this information with the public to be transparent.
The preliminary findings determined that the Secret Service did not attend a security briefing given to local SWAT and sniper teams on the morning of July 13, that local law enforcement said communications were siloed and they were not in frequent radio contact directly with the Secret Service, that local law enforcement notified command about Crooks before the shooting and received confirmation that the Secret Service was aware of the notification and that the Secret Service was seen on the roof of the American Glass Research (AGR) building with local law enforcement following the shooting.
The investigation also found that photos of the shooter were sent to the ATF for facial recognition and that local law enforcement said the Secret Service was initially not planning on sending snipers to the rally.
Johnson's office also provided a timeline of the events on July 13:
9 a.m. — Butler County Emergency Services held a briefing for the local SWAT and Sniper units from Butler County, Beaver County, and Washington County providing security for Trump's rally. The briefing outlined the security perimeter for the event and areas of responsibility for each local unit as well as staging locations, including sniper locations, for each local unit and the Secret Service.
Attendees of the briefing said no Secret Service or other federal law enforcement were present for the briefing and that the Secret Service initially did not plan to provide sniper units before changing plans for unclear reasons. It is unknown why the Secret Service did not attend the briefing.
9:27 a.m. — Crooks enters a Home Depot in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Video footage of the store reportedly shows him entering alone.
9:41 a.m. — Crooks purchases a 5.5 FT Aluminum Dual Platform ladder.
9:42 a.m. — Crooks exits the Home Depot. Video footage of the parking lot reportedly shows him leaving in a vehicle, although the footage could not identify the make and model of the vehicle.
10:30 a.m. — Two local law enforcement snipers are in position on the second floor inside the AGR building.

[American Thinker] For now, I’m taking at face value that Biden has withdrawn from the presidential campaign via a tweeted-out letter, with the promise of a live statement to follow. However, a surprising number of people believe that, considering how consequential Biden’s statement is, a tweeted-out letter suggests a coup rather than a voluntary resignation. More than anything, this reveals how the Biden administration has destroyed all trust in the government.

[Red State] As if the mess on our nation's borders wasn't bad enough already, we learn now that the Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against a federal contractor, Southwest Key Programs, alleging pervasive sexual abuse on the part of the contractor's employees against illegal immigrants - including children.
Migrant children held in the United States after crossing the border illegally were subject to “pervasive” sexual abuse at the hands of federal contractors, the Department of Justice said Wednesday.
The department filed a lawsuit against Southwest Key Programs, which operates homes for underage illegal immigrants awaiting placement with “sponsors” in the United States. Federal law bars minors who cross the border illegally from being returned to their home country. Southwest Key holds more than 6,000 children in 29 shelters staffed by “youth care workers.”
The lawsuit says Southwest Key records show staff members repeatedly covered for each other as they preyed on children.
The details that have been released are nothing short of shocking.

He presented audio clips which he claims show that in addition to the shots fired by Crooks and that fired by the sniper who killed Crooks, there were other shots with a distinct audio signature, indicating a third shooter.
Ackman retweeted the clip, saying it 'makes a highly credible case that there were at least two shooters/assassins who attempted to kill' Donald Trump.
The billionaire hedged his wild theory with the comment: 'I have no expertise in this field. None. I welcome further analysis and rebuttal.'

My opinion after watching it is that I probably should watch it again, if I found the time.
Martenson points out that it's only a preliminary analysis, especially when it comes to the second group of five or six shots, which he suspects involved two separate weapons - he says those would need expert analysis.
Much of his work involves examining the precise delays between the supersonic shocks and the shot reports.
One thing that I would like to know is how many shots the USSS fired. I think Mortenson is saying "one", at the end.
If that's in fact the case, then it does appear there's a possibility there were two shooters involved.

The Yug Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line, hit manpower and hardware of AFU 24th, 30th, 54th Mechanised, 56th Mechanised Infantry, 79th, 80th Air Assault brigades, and the 225nd Separate Assault Battalion close to Seversk, Grigorovka, Chasov Yar, Iliynka, Katerinovka (Donetsk People's Republic).
One attack launched by assault units of the AFU 10th Mountain Assault Brigade was repelled.
The AFU losses amounted to up to 510 Ukrainian troops, one armoured personnel carrier, and two motor vehicles.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 330 Ukrainian troops, one armoured fighting vehicle, three motor vehicles, one U.S.-made 155mm M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery system, one 122mm 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system, three 122mm D-30 howitzers, one UK-made 105mm L-119 howitzer, and three field ammunition depots.
The Vostok Group of Forces improved the tactical situation and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of AFU 72nd Mechanised, 58th Mechanised Infantry, 120th Territorial Defence, 17th and 21st National Guard brigades near Oktyabr, Vodyanoye, Novosyolka, Prechistovka, Razdolnoye, and Stepnoye (Donetsk People's Republic).
One counterattack launched by units of the AFU 102nd Territorial Defence Brigade was repelled.
Over 115 Ukrainian troops, three motor vehicles, one UK-made 155mm FH-70 howitzer, one U.S.-made M198 howitzer, and one 122mm D-30 howitzer were neutralised.
The Dnepr Group of Forces hit manpower and hardware of AFU 141st Infantry, 35th Naval Infantry, 15th National Guard brigades close to Stepnoye and Novodanilovka (Zaporozhye region).

the reports I read said "foreign accounts", with the implication from context that they were media accounts - this is the first I heard about them being bank accounts and considering the source, the 3 day year rule is in effect.

Overseas bank accounts? From previous reports, the 3 accounts sounded like encrypted Telegram chat accounts. Not at all the same thing as banking.
Encrypted overseas bank accounts has a nice scary sound, but on-line banking uses encryption, especially when the traffic goes through gawd knows whose servers.
tl;dr: I am curious whether "bank accounts" is
1) a newly discovered detail
2) just media chaff to confuse the situation.
