Charter Schools and Their Enemies

[Hoover Institution] The day before this show was recorded, Dr. Thomas Sowell began his 10th decade of life. Remarkably on one hand and yet completely expected on the other, he remains as engaged, analytical, and thoughtful as ever. In this interview (one of roughly a dozen or so we’ve conducted with Dr. Sowell over the years), we delve into his new book Charter Schools and Their Enemies, a sobering look at the academic success of charter schools in New York City, and the fierce battles waged by teachers unions and progressive politicians to curtail them. Dr. Sowell’s conclusion is equally thought provoking: If the opponents of charter schools succeed, the biggest losers will be poor minority children for whom a quality education is the best chance for a better life.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
How Police Secretly Took Over a Global Phone Network for Organized Crime
[VICE/Motherboard] Police monitored a hundred million encrypted messages sent through Encrochat, a network used by career criminals to discuss drug deals, murders, and extortion plots.
Click on the link for the full article. It's worth it.
Something wasn't right. Starting earlier this year, police kept arresting associates of Mark, a UK-based alleged drug dealer. Mark took the security of his operation seriously, with the gang using code names to discuss business on custom, encrypted phones made by a company called Encrochat. For legal reasons, Motherboard is referring to Mark using a pseudonym.

Because the messages were encrypted on the devices themselves, police couldn't tap the group's phones or intercept messages as authorities normally would. On Encrochat, criminals spoke openly and negotiated their deals in granular detail, with price lists, names of customers, and explicit references to the large quantities of drugs they sold, according to documents obtained by Motherboard from sources in and around the criminal world.

Maybe it was a coincidence, but in the same time frame, police across the UK and Europe busted a wide range of criminals. In mid-June, authorities picked up an alleged member of another drug gang. A few days later, law enforcement seized millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs in Amsterdam. It was as if the police were detaining people from completely unrelated gangs simultaneously.

"[The police] all over it aren't they," the dealer wrote in one of the messages obtained by Motherboard. "My heads still baffled how they got on all my guys."

Unbeknownst to Mark, or the tens of thousands of other alleged Encrochat users, their messages weren't really secure. French authorities had penetrated the Encrochat network, leveraged that access to install a technical tool in what appears to be a mass hacking operation, and had been quietly reading the users' communications for months. Investigators then shared those messages with agencies around Europe.

Portland: Riots Resume, Governor Chastises the Police
Andy Ngo's Twitter account is the ground truth, but here is what the Oregonian is trying to sell.
Gov. Kate Brown on Friday urged the Portland Police Bureau to de-escalate nightly tensions with a group of protesters that she said have "repeatedly taken to the streets with the intent to destroy property."

While she noted that "this group has repeatedly lit fires, thrown rocks, bottles, fireworks and other objects and have put the safety of others at risk," Brown said the police response has gone too far.

#2  These riots will probably continue on until election time unless something/somebody intervenes to break things loose. The problem is that those prone to violence, looting and arson piggy-back onto peaceful protests. This is a tactic that has been used for a long time by extremists.

Former Klingon Director Panetta now an expert on HV-19 and POTUS 'dereliction of duty'
[Independent] Donald Trump has gone "Awol" in his leadership of the US through the coronavirus pandemic, former CIA Director and Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has said in a scathing attack on the president.

"This president has essentially gone Awol from the job of leadership that he should be providing a country in trouble," Mr Panneta told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday, branding the situation a "major crisis".

"But the president, rather than bringing together some kind of national strategy to confront this crisis, simply resorts to tweeting about vandalism and other things to kind of divert attention from the crisis that’s there," Mr Panetta added.

The former CIA director, who served under President Barack Obama and as White House chief of staff under President Bill Clinton, went on to signpost recent warnings from Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, that the outbreak in the US is spiralling.

"What we’ve seen over the last several days is a spike in cases that are well beyond the worst spikes that we’ve seen. That is not good news. We’ve got to get that under control, or we risk an even greater outbreak in the United States," Dr Fauci told the BBC on Wednesday.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Former World Leaders Urge European Countries to Oppose Israeli Annexation Plan
[Haaretz] The Elders, founded by Nelson Mandela, send letters to the leaders of France, Germany, Britain and the European Union, insisting annexing parts of the West Bank would have political and economic ramifications.

A group of former world leaders urged European leaders on Friday to keep pressuring Israel against annexation of parts of the West Bank, warning against complacency after Israel made no move to take over the territory on July 1.

The Elders, founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007, said in letters to the leaders of France, Germany, Britain and the European Union that they should insist to Israel that annexation would have negative political and economic consequences for bilateral and regional relations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had aimed to start the process by Wednesday, saying he wanted to begin annexing West Bank territory in line with President Donald Trump’s Mideast plan.

But Israeli Cabinet minister Ofir Akunis said the annexation process had been delayed, telling Israel’s Army Radio station on Wednesday that officials were still working out the final details with their American counterparts. He said he expected the annexation to take place later in July.

The two-state solution, backed by the UN Security Council and the vast majority of the international community, envisions an independent Palestinian state in the entire West Bank — territory Israel captured from Jordan in 1967 — and Gaza, with agreed land swaps. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their state but the future of Jerusalem is considered a final status issue to be decided in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

British Media Outlets Wake Up, Begin Distancing Themselves From UK Black Lives Matter Organization
[LI] In the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, we saw protests and violent riots break out across America. Marchers carried signs that read "silence is violence" and "Black Lives Matter."

"Black Lives Matter," as we all know, is more than just a slogan. It’s a radical left-wing organization with an anti-capitalism, anti-police, anti-America, and anti-Israel agenda. Over the last several weeks, the group and their message have risen to what Fox News’s Tucker Carlson described last month as an "unprecedented" level of power "for an American political movement."

"Black Lives Matter now enjoys almost complete immunity from criticism," Carlson correctly pointed out at the time. He would know, considering that he has become a target of boycott efforts on behalf of BLM simply for daring to criticize the group’s agenda and how they really operate.

A big reason why Black Lives Matter is treated as though they are above criticism and scrutiny is because the mainstream media treats them that way. In fact, supposedly objective media reporters have actually gone on record defending the group, as we saw earlier this week when ABC News reporter Jon Karl and PBS reporter Yamiche Alcindor rushed to their defense during a press briefing after President Trump called a planned NYC "Black Lives Matter" road painting a "symbol of hate" in a tweet.

"Why is the president calling Black Lives Matter a symbol of hate?" an agitated Karl asked White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany Wednesday.

"On Monday, the president went after stripping racist themes on buildings. On Tuesday he went after a rule to combat segregation. And then today, he said that he describes the words Black Lives Matter as a symbol of hate. Why is he digging in on race in this way?" an indignant Alcindor asked during the same press conference.

Ghislaine Maxwell's pending suicide
[American Thinker] When Jeffrey Epstein, the renowned financial maven and friend to the rich and powerful, was arrested for underage sex-trafficking, I knew that his days on the planet were numbered. Epstein simply knew too much to live.

What undoubtedly happened was that a lot of money changed hands, deals were made, prison guards and possibly their superiors were bought, cameras were surreptitiously disabled, and Epstein's murder was declared a suicide by bedsheet, an official conclusion that exactly zero people bought.

And now that Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's pal, paramour, and fellow pervert, is behind bars for her part in the sex scandal, her eventual "suicide" is a certainty. We'll never know exactly what went on between Epstein and his famous friends.

Did Epstein and Woody Allen discuss Manhattan, Allen's ode to sex with a 16-year-old? Did Jeff and former president Clinton talk about bjs in the Oval Office? How about the esteemed lawyer Alan Dershowitz? Did he and Jeff discuss legal strategies? We'll never know.

Whatever Epstein and Kevin Spacey discussed, I'd rather not know.

No, the powerful will be protected. Ghislaine Maxwell must die. But how will she do it?

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Barr's team startled in 'first chance' to assess Mueller investigation: Book
[Washington Examiner] Attorney General William Barr's team was in for a shock when it met with special counsel Robert Mueller before his report was released, according to a forthcoming book.

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin wrote about Barr's "first chance" to assess the Russia investigation in early March 2019 in True Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Investigation of Donald Trump, an excerpt of which was published last week by the New Yorker.

He described a "fairly relaxed session" in which Mueller "gave a brief introduction" to Barr and his staff, who later reflected on how the former FBI director didn't live up to expectations.
Well yea! How many of them have "lived up to expectations lately?"
"Later, Barr’s team noted that Mueller looked tired and old. Because Mueller had been the focus of so much public attention for nearly two years and said so little in public, he had taken on an almost mythic status, even among people who once knew him well, like Barr. To see him after this exhausting enterprise was startling. He was an old seventy-four," Toobin wrote in the book that is set for release in August.
"Mueller looked tired and old"....I blame old man time, and D.C. traffic.
They weren't the only ones.

One prominent Democrat, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, said in a recent podcast that he was surprised by Mueller's shaky testimony before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees in July 2019 after his report was released. The California Democrat agreed when asked whether he was "shocked" during a Daily Beast podcast last month.
"Shocked?" In Schiff's case, if it wan't a sustained, eye-popping 115V, then he wasn't "shocked" nearly enough.
"I have known Bob Mueller for a long time. I have tremendous respect for him. I think he is just an amazing human being and public servant," Schiff said. "He was not the man that I knew just in terms of his strength of presence, and so, it was quite surprising."

Republican political consultant Rick Wilson, one of the hosts of the New Abnormal podcast, offered his take on why "a lot" of people felt the same way.
Rick Wilson - Never Trumper Democrat who is a perpetual political loser and cuck
"I do think a lot of folks had projected on Mueller a level of aggression that was not present in that testimony — in that hearing," he said.

Mueller wrapped up his two-year investigation last spring. His team was unable to find a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, but the report did lay out 10 instances of possible obstruction of justice that Democrats seized on as a road map to impeachment. The investigation did, however, lead to convictions and guilty pleas from Trump associates over charges unrelated to Russia collusion.

Armed pro-BLM militia group NFAC marches on Stone Mountain, supporters say they are 'in tears right now'
[MEAWW] The group, known as Not F**king Around Coalition (NFAC), demanding the removal of carvings of Confederate figures on the side of the mountain, where KKK was reborn in 1915

Hundreds of protesters dressed in black
Golly — hundreds. Well, I’m impressed....
armed with assault rifles marched towards Stone Mountain, Georgia, demanding the carving of Confederate figures on the side of the mountain be removed in light of recent events. Those figures include Robert E Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas J "Stonewall" Jackson. Although some found the sight to be alarming, Stone Mountain Park Police told media they had no issues with the gathering.

The park had just recently opened after being closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic as such there not many people gathered this weekend. However, on July 4 afternoon, more than 100 people showed up protesting the monument, which is one of the largest in the country. The protesters were heavily armed but workers with the Park's Public Safety Division said they had no issues with the group coming in to exercise their right to free speech. Shortly after 2 pm local time, the armed protesters were allowed to enter the park from the West Gate. They then headed to the lawn area of the park from where the monument can be viewed.

The group then went to Memorial Hall, spoke and then left with an escort by the park police. Both north and west entrances to the park were closed and no one else was allowed to enter during the demonstrations. Those in the park were allowed to hike and walk but no attractions were open.

The mountain is also a notorious meeting place for the Ku Klux Klan, which was "reborn" atop it. The KKK was brought back to life on that mountain with a burning cross in 1915 -- advocates of the Confederate carvings were card-carrying members of the hate group. After the mountain was complete, a "neo-Confederate theme park" emerged around the area, including a plantation house, and a 'Gone With the Wind' museum, according to the Atlanta History Center. Since then, KKK members have gathered annually at Stone Mountain to hold rallies, according to The New York Times.

#6  So I watched them, on video, marching in formation. I was struck by the numbers, a few hundred. I see it a little differently, like so may of here on the burg do. They, the so called protestors, were all in like uniforms, they were organized, they were disciplined, all had similar weapons, they were under control and for all practical purposes a military force armed for battle. They were not Anarchists, they were well armed, they were soldiers. We need to take note. I realized just how unprepared we are to defend America from this.
BLM/Antifa are winning every fight, we, America have lost every one so far. Sad, but a fact. They have burned our cities, a few arrests, most arrested released, no reprisals. They have destroyed our businesses, no reprisals. The only force in America to defend us have been vilified and now going through defunding. They have been successful in systematically destroying our churches. They ARE systematically destroying our history. They have made professional sports fans and owners a racist entity, NFL playing the Black national anthem et all. All the glue that hold the American blue collars citizens together is now broken, outlawed, or racist. Just hang an All Lives Matter banner or a Redskins banner outside your house in the city and see what happens. Speak out about white privilege at work and see what happens.
So they have won on every front, our politicians, like all in history are trying to appease, which never works. So who will defend us? Who will protect us from these hoards? The police are muzzled, the military are constitutionally bound to not defend us. And the enemy are organized and well funded.
The constitution allows for a well regulated militia. We have always looked at the national guard as that entity. We need a nationally organized entity to manage countering this force and currently there is not that force in place. We need it now, if its not already too late.

We're Experiencing an Attempted Revolution by Entitled, Privileged Snobs but How Will It Play Out?
[Red State] I usually don’t post on this kind of viral video because while it is amusing, in a sad and pathetic kind of way, the plural of anecdote is not data. Watch this whole video because it is a metaphor for what I think is going to happen in America:

This is breathtaking in its arrogance and lack of introspection. A whiny-ass white boy lecturing a black working man about what it means to be black in America. This sh**stain’s diatribe is the second most amazing thing in this video. The most amazing thing is that he didn’t get pounded to a pulp by an actual man who knows how to carry himself.

Unless you’ve missed it, we’re seeing the formation of what could become an active insurrection. A lot of it is straight out of the unconventional warfare classroom. The radical Marxist group Black Lives Matter provides the direction. There are establishment figures, like Nancy Pelosi, like Chuck Schumer, like Rachel Maddow, like Jake Tapper, who think by mouthing correct slogans they will buy influence and loyalty, but, if this project succeeds those folks and their face-diaper wearing colleagues will be among the first to the scaffold (assuming anyone in BLM has the mechanical skills to erect one).

The rent-a-mobs are composed of three easily identifiable segments: the provocateurs and street soldiers composed largely of antifa and black bloc stooges; the ’mostly peaceful’ protesters who think they are participating in a legitimate act of protest; and the opportunists who show up to carry off big screen televisions, throw bricks at cops, and commit vandalism for the sake of destroying stuff. The general strategy in this kind of movement is that the provocateurs try to create acts of violence directed against law enforcement and security forces. They are aided in this by the opportunists who often have a large number of actual criminals in the ranks. The idea is to provoke the security forces into an act that leaves lots of bodies in the street, ideally bodies belonging to the ’mostly peaceful’ protesters. This, in turn, recruits more people to the cause as the dead are deemed martyrs and recruiting tools.

It doesn’t always work.

Large CSA battle flag raised adjacent I-40 in North Carolina
[The Hill] A giant 20-by-30 foot Confederate flag was raised along a busy highway in North Carolina this weekend to mark the Fourth of July, and, despite some complaints, local officials say there's nothing that can be done about it.

Local network WSOCTV reports that the Sons of Confederate Veterans raised the flag on Friday on an 80-foot pole along Interstate 40. It marks one of several Confederate flags that has been raised in the area after Gov. Roy Cooper (D) announced in June that all Confederate monuments on state Capitol property would be removed.

"The Sons of Confederate Veterans, we’re trying to replace the statue with flags, and we try to put them on the interstate so more people can see it," Elgie McGalliard told the local station. "Take down our statues, and we’re going to put up a flag somewhere along the major interstates in North Carolina."

The group said they were raising the large flag to mark the Fourth of July weekend and their heritage.

Some have already complained about the flags, but officials say they are on private property and there are no ordinances against it.

Cornell Improperly Sends Student Fees to BLM Activists
[Free Beacon] The student government at Cornell University improperly donated thousands of dollars in student fees to a coalition of Black Lives Matter activists and left-leaning organizations.

The Student Activities Funding Committee (SAFC), a student-led panel that allocates fees to campus groups, sent $10,000 to the Cornell Students for Black Lives fundraising initiative. The initiative, which is not a registered student organization, describes itself as a student organization "coalition." According to the funding guidelines in the student government charter, for a group to be "eligible to request funds or to spend allocated funds [it] must register with and be approved by the Campus Activities Office by when the budgets are due in each semester."

The contributions have drawn objections from other student groups. Conservative student leaders penned a letter to the editor at the Cornell Daily Sun expressing their concern that the spending violated the SAFC charter and funding guidelines.

"Nothing in SAFC's charter, bylaws or guidelines for funding authorizes the transfer of funds to non-registered groups," the letter reads. "No meeting on the record was held and no vote was recorded."

The Cornell Students for Black Lives initiative has already generated a financial windfall, raising more than $118,000 from a GoFundMe page in collaboration with the Cornell Black Alumni Association. Neither the initiative nor the alumni association returned a request for comment.

nuclear deal over compliance issues with La Belle France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reported on Friday.

He did not specify what issues led Iran to trigger the mechanism, which could be the first step toward dissolution of the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

It was signed in 2015 between Iran and six world powers including: the United States, Russia, China, La Belle France, the United Kingdom and Germany.
The US withdrew from the deal in 2018, a move that has already significantly weakened the agreement under which Iran was supposed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Iran has already breached part of the deal, particularly with regard to limits set on uranium enrichment.

Borrell said on Friday, "I have received today a letter from the Foreign Minister of Iran referring Iran’s concerns regarding implementation issues by La Belle France, Germany and the United Kingdom under the JCPOA to the Joint Commission for resolution through the Dispute Resolution Mechanism, as set out in paragraph 36 of the agreement."

Any party to the deal can refer non-compliance issues to a Joint Commission that involves representatives of all parties to the deal, plus the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
. There is then a 30-day two-step process to resolve the matter, with the potential to extend the time frame. If no resolution can be achieved, the deal can be dissolved.

Alarmed by rise in Gaza suicides, Palestinians blame Hamas, PA
[Jpost] Paleostinians took to social media to express outrage over the increase in suicide rates, with many holding Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, and the PA responsible for the harsh economic conditions in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
.

Suicide rates are increasing in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, Paleostinian sources said on Saturday after the death of three Paleostinians in separate incidents.
"It's genetic for Paleos"
Several other cases of attempted suicide have been reported in the Gaza Strip in the past few weeks, the sources said.

Sleman Alajoury, a 23-year old university graduate, did away with himself by shooting himself in the head. In his last post on Facebook, Alajoury wrote: "This is not a futile attempt. This is an attempt at salvation. Complaining to none other than God is a humiliation."

A Paleostinian journalist in the Gaza Strip said that Alajoury had been previously arrested several times by Hamas security forces because of his political activities.

Sufyan Abu Zayda, a senior Fatah official in the Strip, said that Alajoury "could not stand the state of loss, oppression, poverty, unemployment, and the absence of hope for a decent life."

Mahmoud Meri, an unemployed university graduate, commented: "The rule of the [Hamas] military in Gaza Strip is driving young people to commit suicide. Hamas is responsible because it has closed all the doors to the young people."

Also Saturday, 21-year-old Ibrahim Yassin died of wounds he sustained when he set himself on fire at the Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip last week. In the past four years, the Strip has witnessed several cases of self-immolations.

According to the sources, the self-immolation was due to economic hardship, despair and unemployment.

On Friday, another man from Shati camp, 24-year-old Ayman al-Ghul, reportedly jumped to his death from the fifth story of a building. It was not immediately clear why al-Ghul did away with himself.

Hours later, a 30-year-old woman, whose identity was not revealed, attempted to take her own life by hanging in the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was reported to be at death's door.

The sources said that the woman was married to the son of Nour Abdel Latif, a leader of an bad boy Islamic Salafi group. The woman tried to kill herself after learning that her husband had married a second wife, they claimed.

Last month, another two suicide cases were reported in the Strip — both by jumping from tall buildings.

The Paleostinian Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) recently called on Hamas to prevent the recurrence of suicide cases in its detention centers. The appeal came after the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Interior announced on May 29 that Muaz Ahmad Abu Amra, 19, did away with himself by hanging himself inside his prison cell. Abu Amra is said to be the third Paleostinian detainee to commit suicide in a Hamas detention facility in the past three years.

Hamas claims to bust Israeli-run spy ring planning ‘sabotage’
[IsraelTimes] Gazoo

-based terror group alleges cell was planning to conduct ’anti-resistance’ activities in the Strip, says it confiscated money and equipment.

The Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, terror group arrested several members of an "Israeli-directed" spy ring planning "sabotage" in the Gaza Strip, the Hamas Interior Ministry announced on Friday morning.

"The security services discovered a cell directed by the Israeli occupation as it attempted to conduct sabotage against resistance elements," the ministry said in a statement.

Hamas did not say how many people it had detained and did not provide any evidence of its claims, nor any photos or names of the alleged cell members. It also gave no details on the targets of the cell.

Hamas security services said they had been tracking the cell’s activity for several days before catching them in the act. In addition to capturing the operatives, Hamas agents confiscated equipment and money Israel used to pay its operatives in the spy ring, the ministry claimed.

The spy ring was in direct communication with Israeli intelligence, Hamas said.

Along with the statement, the Hamas Interior Ministry released a propaganda video praising its "men in the arena — the knights of the Interior Ministry."

The Shin Bet security service declined to comment.

This is not the first time Hamas has claimed to arrest Gazook collaborators with Israel. In April, Hamas said that it had arrested a number of Paleostinians who spied for Israel during a wave of protests at the Gaza border fence 2019, according to Arabic-language daily al-Sharq al-Awsat.
Hah! Missed again! There were five if them — all with black hair, dark eyes, and named Mohammed, Muhomad, Mahmoud, Md. Ali, and Ahmed. Two are cousins, but Mossad (or is it Shin Bet? I can never remember which one is the FBI and which the CIA) forgot to write down which ones.
Hamas’s claims come at a time of increased tensions between Israel and the Gaza-based terror group, partially over Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank. The coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
crisis has seen escalating desperation in Gaza, with Hamas unable to pay its employees for the better part of two months.

On Thursday, bigwigs from Hamas and Fatah, the other main Paleostinian faction, held a joint presser where they promised to pursue "all forms of struggle" should Israel proceed with its intended annexation plan.
How uninspired. At least the PA’s Mahmoud Abbas is threatening a third Intifada.
Earlier this week, thousands of Gazooks protested Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank in Hamas-led demonstration in Gaza City. The demonstrators did not march on the border fence, as in the 2019 Great March of Return protests, and avoided contact with Israeli forces, instead proceeding westward towards the sea.

Although so far both parties have avoided a full-blown confrontation, the Israeli Air Force struck multiple Hamas military targets across the Gaza Strip last week after a rocket fired from Gaza landed in Israeli territory.

Fifth Column
They finally got Chris Columbus in Baltimore
[ZeroHedge] A group of protesters in Baltimore spent their 4th of July using ropes to pull down a statue of Christopher Columbus in the city's Little Italy neighborhood - tossing it into the Inner Harbor.

The statue, dedicated in 1984, is the latest monument to be destroyed in what President Trump dubbed the "left-wing cultural revolution" by "angry mobs."

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Columbus statue has been the site of a wreath-laying ceremony right before the annual Columbus Day parade, which, in 2019 was replaced with the Italian Heritage Festival.

Republican state delegates and Italian-American activists held a press conference at the statue last month to ask Gov. Larry Hogan and Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young to preserve and protect the memorials, following activists’ comments about pulling down the monuments themselves and the introduction of a City Council bill this week to rename one of them in honor of victims of police violence.

The downed statue is one of three monuments to Columbus in Baltimore.

Perhaps some thoughts by Matt Taibbi are worth repeating (via SubStack):

Much of America has watched in quizzical silence in recent weeks as crowds declared war on an increasingly incoherent succession of historical symbols. Maybe you nodded as Confederate general Albert Pike was toppled or even when Christopher Columbus was beheaded, but it got a little weird when George Washington was emblazoned with “Fuck Cops” and set on fire, or when they went after Ulysses S. Grant, abolitionist Colonel Hans Christian Heg, “Forward,” (a seven-foot-tall female figure meant to symbolize progress), the Portland, Oregon “Elk statue,” or my personal favorite, the former slave Miguel de Cervantes, whose cheerful creations Don Quixote and Sancho Panza were apparently mistaken for reals and had their eyes lashed red in San Francisco.

Was a What the Fuck? too much to ask? It was! In the space of a few weeks the level of discourse in the news media dropped so low, the fear of being shamed as a deviationist so high, that most of the weirder incidents went uncovered. Leading press organs engaged in real-time Soviet-style airbrushing. Here’s how the Washington Post described a movement that targeted Spanish missionary Junipero Serra, Abraham Lincoln (a “single-handed symbol of white supremacy,” according to UW-Madison students), an apple cider press sculpture, abolitionist Mathias Baldwin, and the first all-Black volunteer regiment in the Civil War, among others.

Iraq
Air defenses respond to rocket attack on US Embassy in Baghdad - report
[Jpost] The incident took place after a number of rocket attacks near the US Embassy in Baghdad and other US military sites in recent weeks.

The eastern entrance of the "Green Zone" in Baghdad where the embassy is located was reportedly closed after the attack. The rocket reportedly fell near a number of protesters near the suspension bridge in the Green Zone.

Earlier on Saturday, explosions and gunfire were heard in Baghdad during a live-fire training exercise by US special forces in charge of protecting the US embassy, according to al-Araby al-Jadeed. The exercise used live ammunition and air defense systems to simulate an attack on the embassy in order to train troops how to protect the embassy in such a situation.

The US received approval from the Iraqi government to carry out the exercise.

The rocket attack on Saturday took place after a number of rocket attacks near the US Embassy in Baghdad and other US military sites in recent weeks. In June, there were six rocket attacks on the US Embassy, the airport and US forces at a base.

Two weeks ago, the Iraqi military said that its forces had raided a base in southern Baghdad used by faceless myrmidons suspected of firing rockets at foreign embassies in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone and its international airport.

Iraqi authorities were questioning the 14 men detained during the raid, the military added. A number of those arrested were later released.
The raid was the most brazen action by Iraqi forces against a major Iran-backed militia in years and targeted the Kataib Hezbollah group, which US officials accuse of firing rockets at bases hosting US troops and other facilities in Iraq.

Given the last Iranian "response", it's prolly not a good time to be booking commercial air travel thru Iranian air space.

WHO halts hydroxychloroquine, HIV drugs in COVID trials after failure to reduce death
[AlAhram] The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday that it was discontinuing its trials of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and combination HIV drug lopinavir/ritonavir in hospitalised patients with COVID-19 after they failed to reduce mortality.

"These interim trial results show that hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir/ritonavir produce little or no reduction in the mortality of hospitalised COVID-19 patients when compared to standard of care.
...if it is hydroxychloroquine alone and only on hospitalized patients, it’s no wonder they aren’t getting a positive result...
Solidarity trial Sherlocks will interrupt the trials with immediate effect," the WHO said in a statement, referring to large multi-country trials that the agency is leading.

The U.N. agency said that the decision, taken on the recommendation of the trial's international steering committee, does not affect other studies where the drugs are used for non-hospitalised patients or as a prophylaxis.
So that’s ok, then. Not that the smart money is on the WHO being the leading edge of scientific research anymore.
Another arm of the WHO-led trial is looking at the potential effect of Gilead's antiviral drug remdesivir on COVID-19.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Human rights groups decry Turkish 'war crimes' in NE Syria
[Rudaw] More than a dozen organizations have signed a letter to European human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
officials detailing abuses committed by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
and Ottoman Turkish- backed groups in northeast Syria.

"Since the start of Ottoman Turkish military operations on the areas of Kurdish origin in northern Syria, the region has turned into a hotspot full of all forms of human rights violations," reads the letter addressed to Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and Robert Ragnar Spano, President of the European Court of Human Rights.

The 18 signatories have unanimously accused Ankara and its Syrian proxies of committing "war crimes, crimes against humanity, as well as crimes of ethnic cleansing and genocide."

Turkey and its Syrian proxies launched a military operation against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria in October 2019, seizing control of a stretch of northeast Syria, known to Kurds as Rojava, including Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain) Gire Spi (Tal Abyad). Hundreds of thousands of civilians were displaced in the offensive.

The military offensive, dubbed "Operation Peace Spring", followed the March 2018 invasion of Afrin, in Aleppo province, which came under control of Ottoman Turkish forces and their Syrian militia proxies following two months of intense fighting with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). Since then, human rights monitors have accused these groups of serious violations against locals.

"The opposition prevented the displaced civilians from returning to their homes, practiced theft, robbery, plunder, armed robbery, confiscated property and crops, burned them, burned forests, kidnapped civilians, and arbitrarily arrested them. Cemeteries and cultural symbols were destroyed," the letter added.

Violations have been "confirmed by reports of governmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations such as Amnesia Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the reports of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry for Syria."

According to numerous organizations, Ottoman Turkish-backed gangs in northwestern have committed repeated violations against the local population with impunity, including killing, kidnapping, and sexual violence.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a late November report that pro-Ottoman Turkish Death Eaters prevented Syrian Kurds from returning to their homes. Instead, they "looted and unlawfully appropriated or occupied their property."

"Executing individuals, pillaging property, and blocking displaced people from returning to their homes is damning evidence of why Turkey's proposed 'safe zones' will not be safe," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at HRW.

Prominent war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed to Rudaw English that it had signed the petition.

Other signatories include the Kurdish Committee for Human Rights, Association for the Defense of Human Rights in Austria, The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights in Syria (MAF) and Kurdish Civil Society Organization in Europe.

Turkey blocked the water supply from the Euphrates into Kurdish-held areas in northeast Syria last week, according to local officials.

Ilham Ahmed, president of the Executive Committee of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) said that Ankara "intentionally" withheld the water to induce "a real drought in Syria."

[Dr.] Fauci is No Nostradamus: How COVID-19 Ran Amok Under His Watch

[Vaxxter] Michel de Nostradamus was born in Saint-Remy, South of France, in 1503. Beyond the gifts he would one day explore in astrology, he pursued an education to become a physician. After his first year at the University of Avignon, an outbreak of the plague swept through France, forcing the University to close.

Undaunted, Nostradamus opened an apothecary before attending the University of Montpellier in pursuit of a doctorate. But a second plague struck disrupting his plan; the plague also killed his first wife and two children. During the outbreak, he joined city doctors to fight against and contain the plague. They succeeded.

Officer draws gun on two men who beat him in the Bronx— de Blasio calls for his resignation
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] An NYPD officer was attacked by two men in the Bronx last night. The incident was caught on video by onlookers, and posted to Twitter.

According to the New York Post, onlookers reported the assault, while some were heard encouraging the assault of the suspects. The footage shows two men throwing an unknown object at the officer who is on the ground struggling with another protestor.

Once the suspect hits the officer with the object, the other suspect manages to run away. The officer stands up but appears to be somewhat shook. It appears that he may have sustained a head injury in the altercation. The officer then draws his gun, although he does not point it at anyone and the crowd disperses.

The video is captured from a moving car where the man recording can be heard yelling, "F**k 12" which is an anti-cop slogan.

In response to the video, New York City Mayor Comrade Bill de Blasio
...cryptocommie mayor of New York and for some reason a Dem candidate for president in 2020. Corrupt and incompetent, his qualifications for office seem to consist of being married to a black woman, with whom he honeymooned in Cuba. He has a preppy-looking son named Dante, whose Divine Comedy involved getting his back hair up when a police car drove past him slowly. New Yorkers voted for him, so they deserve him...
said the officer in the video should be stripped of his gun and badge.

Speaking at a presser yesterday De Blasio said, "There’s a video going around of a police officer in the middle of a situation that admittedly looks chaotic, but protesters were in front of that police officer, that police officer drew his gun at some point yesterday."

De Blasio added, "That to me seeing that video was absolutely unacceptable ... I want you to note on that video, a superior officer immediately came over and moved that officer away from that crowd, that officer should have his gun and badge taken away today."

The altercation took place on Monday night as police in Manhattan struggled to contain the crowds of protestors and looters. Another officer was injured around the same time on Madison Avenue, although little is yet known as to what exactly occurred. The video does show the aftermath however of an officer laying face-down on the sidewalk as another officer rushes to help him, carrying a bottle of water.

The Bronx was on fire last night, and looters entered many stores as well. De Blasio, who demanded an officer's badge, was responsible for deploying more officers to the area to try to control the rampant property damage and theft.

A blog called Uptown Collective shared video of the fires, calling them an "ominous sign."

Man who hit two Black Lives Matter protesters on the freeway in Seattle is black

Dawit Kelete of Seattle drove the car around vehicles that were blocking Interstate 5 and sped into the crowd about 1:40 a.m., according to a police report released by the Washington State Patrol. Video taken at the scene by protesters showed people shouting “Car! Car!” before fleeing the roadway.

Summer Taylor, 24, of Seattle, was in critical condition while Diaz Love, 32, of Portland, Oregon, was upgraded to serious condition in the intensive care unit, Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Kelete was described by offices as reserved and sullen when he was arrested, according to court documents. He also asked if the pedestrians were OK, the documents say.

Kelete was booked into the King County Correctional Facility on Saturday morning on two counts of vehicular assault. Bail was denied.

Officials were trying to determine the motive as well as where he got onto the interstate, which had been closed by the state patrol for more than an hour before the women were hit. Mead said they suspect Kelete drove the wrong way on a ramp. Trooper Rick Johnson said the driver went through a barrier that closed the freeway before striking the women.

Troopers did not know whether it was a targeted attack, but impairment was not considered a factor, Mead said.

Kelete has a Seattle address. He is listed in public records as a student who attended Washington State University between 2011 and 2017 majoring in business and commerce. His enrollment status could not be confirmed because the university was closed Saturday.

The Washington State Patrol said Sunday evening that going forward it won’t allow protesters to enter I-5 and would arrest pedestrians on the freeway.

Protesters had shut down the interstate for 19 days in a row, Mead said at a press conference.

The State Patrol responded by closing sections of the interstate to keep drivers and protesters safe.

Clashes between the Syrian regime forces and ISIS have killed more than 40 fighters on the two sides in just 48 hours
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
Fighting and Russian air strikes in the central desert province of Homs since late Thursday have taken the lives of 18 pro-government fighters and 26 murderous Moslems, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"The fighting started in the night of Thursday to Friday with an [extremist] assault on regime positions" near the town of al-Sukhna, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

ISIS fighters have retained a roving presence in Syria’s vast Badia desert, despite losing their last shred of territory last year. They regularly carry out attacks there.

ISIS declared a cross-border "caliphate" in large parts of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, but several military campaigns against it chipped away at that proto-state and eventually led to its territorial demise.

Syria’s war has killed more than 380,000 people since it started in 2011 with the repression of anti-government protests, before evolving into a complex conflict involving world powers and murderous Moslems.

The turbans were said to have moved into the town in about 13 gun trucks and attempted an attack on the military base.

The sources said seven Boko Haram fighters were killed during the attack that lasted for two hours.

Also killed was a five-year-old boy, who was hit by a stray bullet.

SaharaReporters gathered that the Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, was in Damasak on Wednesday to distribute relief materials to displaced persons in the town.

TikTok distances from Beijing in response to India app ban
[Jpost] TikTok, which is not available in China, is owned by China's ByteDance, has sought to distance itself from its Chinese roots to appeal to a global audience.
"We can't even pronounce 'Backdoor'"
China-owned social media app TikTok distanced itself from Beijing after India banned 59 Chinese apps in the country, according to a correspondence seen by Rooters.

In a letter to the Indian government dated June 28th and seen by Rooters on Friday, TikTok Chief Executive Kevin Mayer said the Chinese government has never requested user data nor would the company turn it over if asked.

TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese apps, including Tencent Holdings LTD's WeChat and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's UC Browser, were banned in India this week following a border clash with China.

"I can confirm that the Chinese government has never made a request to us for the TikTok data of Indian users," Mayer wrote, adding that data for Indian users is stored in servers in Singapore. "If we do ever receive such a request in the future, we would not comply."

The letter was sent ahead of a likely meeting next week between the company and the government, one source familiar with the matter told Rooters.TikTok, which is not available in China, is owned by China's ByteDance, has sought to distance itself from its Chinese roots to appeal to a global audience.

The company has committed to spend $1 billion in the region.

Ohio Police Officer Killed In Line Of Duty, Suspect Dead
[OANN] A community in Toledo, Ohio is mourning the loss of an officer who was recently killed in the line of duty. Officer Anthony Dia was allegedly shot while responding to a call of an intoxicated man, who was roaming the parking lot of a Home Depot just after midnight on Saturday.

"Sacrifice comes in all forms," stated Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz. "We cannot forget the struggle that our coppers face on a daily basis."

Upon arriving at the scene, Dia reportedly approached the man. The suspect then turned around and shot him in the chest before fleeing the scene.

The officer was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. According to police, the unidentified suspect expeditiously departed at a goodly pace and was found in the woods behind the store with a self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound.

During a recent presser, Toledo’s mayor detailed the moment Officer Dia was removed from his hospital room. Around 20 officers, who were emotional over the loss of their brother in blue, saluted Dia as he was wheeled out.

Seven soldiers killed in ambush in central Mali
[Jpost] Seven government soldiers were killed in an ambush in central Mali in an area where at least 32 villagers were slain the previous day by suspected jihadists, local authorities said on Friday.

The ambush took place on Thursday on the outskirts of Gouari village in Mopti region, Defence Ministry front man Colonel Diarran Koneman said.

He declined to give any further details on casualties but a Malian military source told Rooters that seven soldiers were killed.

Suspected Islamist snuffies raided the villages of Gouari, Djindo and Fangadougou on Wednesday, killing 32 people.

The mayor of a town close to Gouari told Rooters the jihadists returned on Thursday afternoon and attacked troops that had arrived after their raid.

"There was violent mostly peaceful fighting. Army vehicles were set on fire," the mayor said, asking to remain anonymous.

Another local official said four military vehicles were destroyed and the corpses of seven soldiers were recovered. Some were still missing, he added.

California: West Hills teen suspected of setting Santa Monica restaurant fire during civil unrest
[DailyBreeze] Micah Tillmon, 19, was arrested without incident by special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and officers with the Santa Monica Police Department.

A West Hills man was arrested Wednesday on federal charges alleging he started a fire that caused substantial damage to the Sake House by Hikari in Santa Monica on May 31 during a night of civil unrest.

Micah Tillmon, 19, was arrested without incident by special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and officers with the Santa Monica Police Department, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

He was expected to make his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles.

A criminal complaint charges Tillmon with one count of arson, a felony offense that carries a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of 20 years.

According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, security video from the restaurant shows Tillmon removing "a red tube-shaped object from his jacket, which he placed behind the reception desk area of the restaurant before walking away. Within seconds of that action, smoke and fire appeared from the area."

Investigators with the Santa Monica Fire Department determined that the fire was caused by the red object that Tillmon allegedly placed in the restaurant, which is at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Fourth Street.

Tillmon was identified by Santa Monica police detectives, who reviewed numerous security videos and social media posts. Tillmon was also linked to the fire when Sherlocks uncovered a video showing his white Ford Explorer parking next to the Sake House four minutes before the fire started and then reversing across the street soon after the fire started, according to the affidavit.

That same video allegedly shows the Explorer parking about 500 feet away from the Sake House, and Tillmon exiting the vehicle and looting a nearby business, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Black fatalities rise in US cities after 'Defund the Police' movement surges
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] The Black Lives Matter movement to defund law enforcement across America has led to an alarming rise in violent mostly peaceful crime in major US cities and an increase in deaths in the black community.

According to a report by "The War on Cops" best-selling author Heather Mac Donald, police data and news reports in urban centers like reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
and New York reveal that violent mostly peaceful crime has surged following the George Floyd protests.

The Ferguson Effect—which Mac Donald coined in 2014 after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri—describes the rise in crimes following the subsequent wave of civil unrest by street rioters. 2,000 additional black homicide victims then occurred in 2015 and 2016, the report cited.

Mac Donald calls today’s violent mostly peaceful-crime spike "Ferguson Effect 2.0" or the "Minneapolis Effect."

At UN Human Rights Council, 53 countries back China's draconian Hong Kong crackdown
Paid Bitches. US is NOT a Member, for good reason. Boot the UN
[Fox News] Fifty-three countries at the U.N. Human Rights Council, led by Cuba, came out in support of China’s national security law this week -- a law that has formed the basis of the communist regime’s latest crackdown on the people of Hong Kong.

Dueling statements were read out in the Council Tuesday in support and against the national security law. According to Axios, Cuba read out a statement in favor of the law backed by 52 other countries, while the U.K. read out a statement against it, representing itself and 26 other countries.

Chinese state media Xinhua reported that the Cuban statement said the law was beneficial for Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, and guarantees that Hong Kong residents can exercise their freedom in a "safe environment."

The law criminalizes anti-government movements, and is targeted at pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong who have pushed back against Beijing’s incursions on freedoms in the territory -- which is supposed to be ruled on the principle of "one country, two systems."

The law punishes crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison.

It also establishes a national security committee in Hong Kong under Beijing’s control and allows for those accused of offenses to be sent to the mainland for trial. Those who are not permanent residents of Hong Kong may be charged under the national security law as well, according to Chinese state media.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that "Free Hong Kong was one of the world's most stable, prosperous and dynamic cities. Now it’s just another communist-run city where its people will be subject to the party elites wins."

But at the Human Rights Council, where a number of countries with poor human rights records sit, those in favor of the draconian measure outnumbered those who opposed it. The Council came under renewed scrutiny over its membership this year, when Venezuela was among those with records of human rights abuse who took a seat.

The spectacle will be seen by the U.S. as further proof that it was right to pull out of the Council in 2018. Then-U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in 2018 called it "a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias."

The city of Salem bans 4th of July celebrations, allows Black Lives Matter event
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] The city of Salem, Oregon has given the go-ahead for a large Black Lives Matter gathering to be held today but canceled a 4th of July fireworks celebration over health concerns relating to the spread of COVID-19.

"A portion of Court Street will be closed as a result," reads the statement. "The event, coordinated by Salem Community Organizers, is expected to draw up to 1,000 people. They plan to gather on the State Capitol steps and begin with speakers and performances at noon. The group does not plan to march on city streets and has reserved the State Capitol steps and Capitol Mall through Oregon Legislative staff and Oregon State Parks respectively."

John Enenche, front man for the Nigerian military, who confirmed this in a statement made available to Xinhua, said the troops also destroyed a Boko Haram terrorists’ meeting venue at Mainyakare on the fringes of the Sambisa forest.

The Sambisa forest is known as the largest training camp of the Boko Haram group in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.

Enenche said the operation, which was executed on Thursday, following a series of intelligence, was in continuation of the air interdiction missions being conducted to unhinge the leadership of the terror group.

‘Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times’ slogan now illegal in city
[Jpost] The popular protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" connotes separatism or subversion, the city's government said, pointing to crimes that are covered under the new national security law imposed by Beijing.

The rallying cry appears on placards at rallies, is printed on clothes and accessories and scribbled on post-it notes on walls across the Chinese-ruled city.

It was unclear whether independent courts would uphold the government's view on the slogan, which further stokes fears the new legislation against secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, crushes free speech in Hong Kong.

"The slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times" nowadays connotes "Hong Kong independence", or separating the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) from the People's Republic of China, altering the legal status of the HKSAR, or subverting the state power," the government said in a statement late on Thursday.

The government has repeatedly said the security law won't affect freedom of speech and other rights in the city.
