Meta warns US campaigns to be wary after blocking Iran-linked hackers on WhatsApp
[IsraelTimes] Accounts linked to Iranian ‘threat actor’ sent messages to individuals in Israel, Palestine, Iran, US and UK, pretending to be technical support, tech giant says
This sounds more to me like phishing than about APT42 or CharmingKitten, but I am ignorant enough to be unsure. What say you, O computer security mavens?
Meta said Friday it had warned US presidential campaigns to be wary after it discovered an Iran-linked hacking attempt using the WhatsApp messaging service.

The announcement is the latest from a tech giant of hacking threats ahead of the November election between Vice President Kamala Harris
It is time for us to do what we have been doing. And that time is every day
and former president Donald Trump
...The Hero of Butler, Pennsylvania...
, after Google and Microsoft earlier uncovered similar attempts attributed to Iran.

WhatsApp accounts linked to an Iranian "threat actor" sent messages pretending to be technical support for AOL, Google, Yahoo or Microsoft, according to Meta.

"This malicious activity originated in Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
and attempted to target individuals in Israel, Paleostine, Iran, the United States and the UK," Meta said in a post.

"This effort appeared to have focused on political and diplomatic officials, and other public figures, including some associated with administrations of President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. The man who made Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter look competent, if only by comparison....
and former President Donald Trump."
Not most of us, then.
Accounts involved in what appeared to be "social engineering" — duping people into providing access to networks or vital data — were blocked, according to Meta.

An investigation linked the attempts to the same hacking group responsible for similar attacks aimed at political, military, diplomatic and other officials reported by Microsoft and Google, Meta said.

"Given the heightened threat environment ahead of the US election, we also shared information about this malicious activity with law enforcement and with the presidential campaigns to encourage them to stay cautious against potential adversarial targeting," Meta said.

On Monday, three US intelligence and security agencies said Iran was behind a recent hack targeting Trump’s presidential campaign and accused Tehran of seeking to influence the 2024 election.

The statement confirmed a Trump campaign claim from earlier this month, which came after internal communications and a dossier on running mate J.D. Vance were shared with a US media outlet.

Harris’s campaign said on August 13 that it too had been targeted by foreign hackers, but did not give an indication of which country was believed to be behind the attempt.

OpenAI last week said it took down a cluster of ChatGPT accounts being used to create content for a "covert Iranian influence operation."

The operation used ChatGPT to create articles and short commentary, which was then shared on social media platforms or websites, according to OpenAI.

Main topics were the conflict in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. , Israel’s presence at the Olympic Games, and the US presidential election.

"They interspersed their political content with comments about fashion and beauty, possibly to appear more authentic or in an attempt to build a following," OpenAI said.

Groups linked to the Iranian government have "laid the groundwork for influence campaigns on trending election-related topics and begun to activate these campaigns in an apparent effort to stir up controversy or sway voters -— especially in swing states," said Clint Watts, general manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center.

Earlier this year, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines warned that Iran was becoming "increasingly aggressive" in its influence efforts, seeking to stoke discord and undermine democratic institutions as it has done in prior election cycles.

Iranian team that hacked Trump campaign has history of attacking high-value targets
[IsraelTimes] Top security officer at US cyber firm says APT42, which is believed to be linked to the IRGC, is Iran’s ‘most powerful security and intelligence entity’ alongside the Quds Force

The Iranian hacking team that compromised the campaign of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump
...They hit him with slander, they impeached him twice. Nancy Pelosi tore up his State of the Union address on national TV. They stole an election and put his adherents in jail. They vilified him. They couldn't crucify him, so they shot him. Still, they can't keep him down...
is known for placing surveillance software on the mobile phones of its victims, enabling them to record calls, steal texts and silently turn on cameras and microphones, according to researchers and experts who follow the group.

Known as APT42 or CharmingKitten by the cybersecurity research community, the accused Iranian hackers are widely believed to be associated with an intelligence division inside Iran’s military, known as the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC-IO. Their appearance in the US election is noteworthy, sources told Rooters, because of their invasive espionage approach against high-value targets in Washington and Israel.

"What makes (APT42) incredibly dangerous is this idea that they are an organization that has a history of physically targeting people of interest," said John Hultquist, chief analyst with US cybersecurity firm Mandiant, who referenced past research that found the group surveilling the cell phones of Iranian activists and protesters. Some of them were imprisoned or physically threatened in the country shortly after being hacked.

A spokesperson for Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
in New York said in an email that "the Iranian government neither possesses nor harbors any intent or motive to interfere in the United States presidential election."

Spokespeople for Trump have said that Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
is targeting the former president and current Republican candidate because they disfavor his policies toward Tehran.

HIGHLY TARGETED
The APT42 crew that targeted Trump has never been formally named in US law enforcement indictments or criminal charges, leaving questions about their structure and identity. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
experts believe they represent a significant threat.

"The IRGC-IO is entrusted with collecting intelligence to defend and advance the interests of the Islamic Theocratic Republic," said Levi Gundert, chief security officer for US cyber intelligence firm Recorded Future and a former Secret Service special agent. "Along with the Quds Force, they are the most powerful security and intelligence entities inside Iran."

In March, Recorded Future analysts discovered hacking attempts by APT42 against a US-based media group named Iran International, which British authorities previously said were the target of physical violence and terror threats by Iranian-linked agents.

Hultquist said the hackers commonly use mobile malware that allows them to "record phone calls, room audio recordings, pilfer SMS (text) inboxes, take images off of a machine," and gather geolocation data.

In recent months, Trump campaign officials sent a message to employees warning them to be diligent about information security, according to one person familiar with the message. The message warned that cell phones were no more secure than other devices and represented an important point of vulnerability, said the person, who requested anonymity as he was not permitted to speak to the media.

The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. The FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence both declined to comment.

The Secret Service did not answer questions about whether the Iranian hacking activity could be intended to support physical attacks planned for the future. In a statement sent to Rooters, a Secret Service spokesperson said they work closely with intelligence community partners to ensure the "highest level of safety and security" but could not discuss matters "related to protective intelligence."

APT42 also commonly impersonates journalists and Washington think tanks in complex, email-based social engineering operations that aim to lure their targeting into opening booby-trapped messages, which let them take over systems.

The group’s "credential phishing campaigns are highly targeted and well-researched; the group typically targets a small number of individuals," said Josh Miller, a threat analyst with email security company Proofpoint. They often target anti-Iran activists, news hounds with access to sources inside Iran, Middle Eastern academics and foreign-policy advisers. This has included the hacking of Western government officials and American defense contractors.

For example, in 2018, the hackers targeted nuclear workers and US Treasury Department officials around the time the United States formally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, said Allison Wikoff, a senior cyber intelligence analyst with professional services company PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The public emergence of APT42 in the ongoing presidential race began earlier this month following a report by Microsoft MSFT.O on August 9, which said the group was attempting to hack staffers on an unnamed presidential campaign.

APT42 is still actively targeting campaign officials and former Trump administration figures critical of Iran, according to a blog post by Google’s cybersecurity research team.

Protesters demand elections as hostage families seethe: ‘You could have saved them’
Deliberately blindered idiots.
[IsraelTimes] Weekly Hostages Square rally highlights 6 captives whose bodies were recovered from Gaza, as Netanyahu is accused of thwarting talks in Egypt; 3 protesters said detained in Jerusalem

Thousands of Israelis erupted into the streets across the country Saturday to demand new elections as hostages’ families held their weekly rally at Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, where they excoriated the government for failing to save six captives whose bodies were retrieved from Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. earlier this week.

A group representing people detained in anti-government demonstrations said three protesters were arrested in Jerusalem.

Titled "You Could Have Saved Them," this week’s Hostages Square rally featured Ayala Metzger, daughter-in-law of Yoram Metzger, one of the six whose bodies were recovered overnight Monday-Tuesday, and Eyal Mor, whose uncle Avraham Munder’s body was another one of those retrieved.

Also featured were Aviva Siegel, whom Hamas
..one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,...
released in November and whose husband Keith remains in captivity; Michael Levy, brother of hostage Or Levy; and Gil Dickmann, cousin of hostage Carmel Gat.

The speakers called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to sign a hostage and ceasefire deal.

Netanyahu’s insistence on Israel remaining in the Philadelphi Corridor, which separates Gaza from Egypt, in order to prevent arms smuggling into Gaza, has reportedly hindered the talks, after the demand was absent from a previous Israeli proposal.

"This isn’t the Philadelphi Corridor, it’s the Philadelphi spin," said Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker and a leading anti-government figure among the hostage families. The premier is "systematically thwarting the deal" with his eleventh-hour demands, she claimed.

Zangauker was speaking outside the military headquarters in Tel Aviv, where hostage families openly critical of the government hold a weekly presser ahead of the nearby Kaplan Street demonstration.

Other anti-government rallies were held in Haifa, Ness Ziona and outside Netanyahu’s private home in Caesarea, among others. A left-wing, binational rally was also held earlier in the day in the central Arab town of Taibe.

Earlier Saturday, the Peace Partnership — a coalition of leftist groups that coalesced after October 7 — and Hadash, a Jewish-Arab communist Knesset party, held a protest against the war in Gaza, preceded by a conference featuring "testimonies on the war and the unspoken horrors, with people and groups that were there."

Protesters held signs calling for the establishment of a Paleostinian state.

#6  The 2022 elections resulted in a govt with Bibi and his regular allies joining with some fringe groups to get a majority in the Knesset.

Polls since Oct 2023 have frequently shown that the electorate has moved away from Bibi's coalition. Not just because of the failure to be alert for the Oct 7 atrocities but also for some divisive moves before that, e.g., the judicial restructuring initiative. Most observers think that Naftali Bennett will be the next PM.

Fifth Column
Uniting as the Student Intifada, anti-Israel groups plan to further disrupt US campuses
[IsraelTimes] Condoning violence and vocal in their anti-West and anti-capitalist views, the protesters are preparing to sow more chaos this year as experts warn of intolerance for other views

The Student Intifada, a growing coalition of pro-Paleostinian, anti-Zionist student groups, is making clear its intention to disrupt the fall semester on school campuses across the United States. Across dozens of campuses currently opening their fall semesters, there are already calls for masked vigils in support of "Paleostine." Troublingly, many of the groups have gone from calling for demonstrations and encampments to condoning the use of violence and "the total eradication of Western civilization."

The Student Intifada’s roots can be traced to the National Students for Justice in Paleostine (SJP), founded in 1993 at the University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Berkeley. However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
it’s picked up followers since the war in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
and then again with the media attention on Columbia University following last year’s highly-covered student encampment.

With Columbia being an epicenter of the anti-Zionist student protests, it comes as no surprise that the Instagram account for Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) has posted that it draws inspiration "not only from Paleostinian resistance but from every struggle for liberation across the globe, including the student protests of Bangladesh."

Meanwhile,
...back at the railroad tracks, Little Nell tried to kick her bound feet and scream post the snotty handkerchief Scarface Al had stuff into her mouth...
the Instagram bio of Columbia University’s chapter of SJP now includes the line, "Long live the Student Intifada and Hind’s Hall" together with the inverted red triangle emoji used by the Hamas
..always the voice of sweet reason...
terror organization to identify its targets.

But the loose Student Intifada movement is more than a collection of student groups with a physical presence on campuses. It occupies space on the internet, from social media platforms such as X and Instagram, to platforms like Substack where writers send digital newsletters to subscribers.

For example, "The Written Resistance®," a quarterly online newsletter published by the National SJP, and blog posts such as "Research & Destroy," is hosted on the Verso Books website. On The Real News Network, whose donors include Edward Snowden, Roger Waters, and the Scripps Howard Fund, people can access the movement’s video content, such as a recent roundtable discussion featuring various pro-Paleostinian students.

Avoiding mention of the October 7 Hamas atrocities that set off the ongoing Israel-Hamas war when thousands of bully boyz invaded southern Israel, brutally murdering 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 to the Gaza Strip, the Student Intifada portrays itself as a peaceful and "comprehensive movement which comprises diverse organizations and groups in society" that seeks to fight "the US colonialist and imperialist institutions," according to a policy paper titled "The Student Intifada in the United States" by University of Michigan PhD candidate Amir Marshi.

In his paper, Marshi, who declined to comment for this story, denies the movement is antisemitic.

"We’re not going to synagogues and yelling slurs and being mean to people. We are here having a peaceful protest on campus asking for one thing and one thing only, and that’s to stop a genocide," Marshi wrote.

Yet, the movement demands that universities sever ties with organizations such as Hillel International whose main mission is supporting Jewish life on campus, divest from charitable foundations that fund Jewish academic research and life on campus, and ban "Zionist" speakers.

’EXPECT TO SEE ZERO COMPROMISE’
With the National SJP as its guide, the movement isn’t limited to local SJP chapters. But it’s not so much the coalition’s reach that troubles some, but rather its refusal to engage with different perspectives.

"The movement is a belief cascade where those in the group compete with each other for acceptance. As they do that, their opinions become more and more extreme," said William J. Bernstein, author of "Delusions of Crowds: Why People Go Mad in Groups."

"No matter how high their SAT scores were, they don’t have the critical thinking skills they need. They are incapable of putting themselves in other people’s shoes. They are utterly intolerant of other views," Bernstein said.

University leaders should expect the students to become more strident in their demands this fall, said Laura Post, an analyst with the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism.

"They are going to increase their efforts to drive Zionist institutions off campus. They are going to make the average Jewish and Zionist student increasingly uncomfortable. We can expect to see zero compromise from these groups," Post said.

For example, at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, encampment organizers affiliated with the school’s SJP chapter called on the university to "divest from all donors and funds that support and profit from the occupation in Paleostine, such as programs like Koret."

A Jewish philanthropic organization, the Koret Foundation provides grants to various causes, including student research projects at Sonoma State.

At Princeton University, organizers connected to the Princeton Israeli Apartheid Divest group and the New Jersey chapter of American Moslems for Paleostine (AMP) continue to demand the university cut ties with the Tikvah Fund, which is a Jewish philanthropic foundation that "supports teaching, research, and publication on Jewish thought."

’DESIRE FOR RADICAL REVOLUTION’
It’s the movement’s repudiation of democracy and apparent support of violence that most concerns Dr. Steven McGuire, the Paul & Karen Levy Fellow in Campus Freedom at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.

"Their animating thing is a desire for radical revolution. The groups are a mixture of radical Paleostinian nationalists who do not think Israel has the right to exist. On the other hand, you have card-carrying Marxists who are revolutionary in nature and who see Paleostine as a key issue for advancing a global revolution," McGuire said.

Indeed, last December, Columbia Social Workers 4 Paleostine organized an unauthorized "teach-in and discussion" which not only justified the October 7 terror onslaught but also praised Communist leaders like Mao Zedong, founder of the Chinese Communist Party. Under Zedong’s policies, between 40 and 80 million people died due to starvation, forced labor, and mass executions.

In a July 31 Instagram post, the University of Chapel Hill SJP appeared to back the right to use violence.

"We emphasize our support for the right to resistance, not only in Paleostine, but also here in the imperial core. We condone all forms of principled action, including armed rebellion, necessary to stop Israel’s genocide and apartheid, and to dismantle imperialism and capitalism more broadly. The oppressors will never grant full liberty to the oppressed; the oppressed must seize liberty with their own hands," the post said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the railroad tracks, Little Nell tried to kick her bound feet and scream post the snotty handkerchief Scarface Al had stuff into her mouth...
in an August 15 post on X, the Columbia University Apartheid Divest and the CU Club Bangla declared their support for Moslem student protesters in Bangladesh.

"And just as the Paleostinian resistance escalated the Intifada on October 7th, it is now the people of Bangladesh who are escalating the global battle for liberation...at least two hundred of our comrades in Bangladesh have been martyred by the Awami League... If we want to achieve liberation in America, we must be prepared to make these same sacrifices," read the post.

McGuire said that statements like these shouldn’t be shrugged off.

"Students constantly bombarded on social media are being led by a vanguard that is radicalized and believes in this [illiberal] ideology that requires followers to chant things that are genocidal," McGuire said.

’APPEASEMENT DOESN’T WORK’
Last year, campus leaders frequently ignored or dismissed the violation of institutional policies, disruptions to academic life, and the harassment and intimidation of Jewish students.

With that in mind, campus leaders must act more decisively if they hope to avoid the pandemonium that marked much of last year, said Richard Priem, deputy national director and COO of the nonprofit Community Security Service (CSS).

"I’m not the ADL, but there are relevant lessons to be learned from a security standpoint, mainly that appeasement doesn’t work. What started with an encampment ended with the violent mostly peaceful takeover of a university building. The lesson that needs to be learned is that there can be zero tolerance for this behavior," Priem said.

There were an estimated 3,200 people, not all of them students, arrested at colleges and universities last spring, according to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named. Most of the charges against students have since been dropped.

Other universities, including the University of reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
and Harvard, withheld degrees from some pro-Paleostinian students facing disciplinary measures for their part in encampments and protests. Many of them have since received their diplomas.

As students begin moving into their dorm rooms and get ready to attend convocations, campus leaders seeking to slow the Student Intifada must do more to address what is happening inside classrooms, McGuire said.

"Universities have to ask themselves if they are giving oxygen to these ideologies through their course catalogs. Part of the problem is that too much of the curriculum focuses on all the problems society has and not on any of its accomplishments," McGuire said.

Bernstein agreed.

"Universities have to improve critical thinking skills. [Student Intifada] groups are not doing themselves any favors staying in their self-aggrandizing bubbles," he said.

They did penetrate the outer perimeter of the DNC security zone for a few minutes. They also managed to occupy some street space near the Israeli consulate. However there was little substantial looting or vandalism or violence against people.

Sadly, the Assyrian Christian community was one of the victims of genocide by the Ottoman Muslems in the early 20th century. Some escaped to Iraq and suffered a massacre there in the 1930s.

Another Lawfare Attack on Trump
Apparently getting endorsements from people you might give jobs to is a Federal crime, not business as usual.
[MSN] Former President Donald Trump has been accused of a new federal crime by social media users who claim that he promised former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a position in his administration if he's reelected for his endorsement.

On Friday, Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump, the GOP presidential nominee. Later that night, he joined Trump at a campaign rally in Glendale, Arizona.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Jr.'s campaign officials told the Post in an August 14 report that he sought a meeting with Harris the week before to discuss a possible role in her administration if he supported her. The report said that the vice president did not show any interest in meeting with Kennedy Jr., according to people familiar with the matter.

And of course former prosecutor Kamala Harris declined to meet with RFK Jr.," wrote Tristan Snell, a lawyer and legal commentator who prosecuted the 2013 civil case filed by the New York attorney general's office against Trump University, a real estate training program created by Trump in the early 2000s.

Europe
CEO of Telegram Messaging App Arrested in France For a 'Lack of Moderators' on the Russian Messaging Site
[PJMedia] The Russian messaging App Telegram could be the last relic from a time when the internet was the wild, wild west. Anyone can use the encrypted messaging app, including terrorists, drug dealers, and low lifes of all sorts.

But Telegram has also served as one of the only sources of uncensored news in Russia where many of their 900 million users reside. It's also available in Ukraine and oppressive societies around the world.

The CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, has been a marked man in Western Europe for allowing all of this freedom to go on without a sufficient number of moderators. The French struck first, arresting Durov when he landed in France on his private jet.

French authorities are being very tight-lipped about their special prisoner. Aside from vague references to the lack of moderators and non-cooperation with authorities, specific charges have not been filed against Durov. He may be indicted as early as Sunday.

Elon Musk referred to Durov's arrest, sarcastically calling it an "ad for the First Amendment."

A poster on X gave a thumbnail bio of Durov.

Pavel reminds me of you. He is not bought.

This guy is kind of a genius. 100% equity, billion users, no marketing, 30 engineers, no HR department, based out of UAE because he wanted to be neutral. Big free speech guy. Owns nothing. Loves his freedom more than money. Raised…
— Xander Sky (@R6Alex) August 25, 2024

In an interview with Tucker Carlson earlier this year, Durov spoke of the interest shown in Telegram by U.S. law enforcement.

🚨 PAVEL DUROV: THE U.S. WANTED TO CONTROL TELEGRAM BETTER

“We get too much attention from the FBI and other security agencies whenever we come to the U.S.

The last time I was in the U.S., I brought an engineer who works for Telegram.

There was an attempt by cybersecurity… pic.twitter.com/DUpz4j5TpX
— Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal) August 24, 2024

“I would rather be free than to take orders from anyone,” Durov told U.S. journalist Tucker Carlson in April about his exit from Russia and search for a home for his company. Durov ended up in the United Arab Emirates.

NBC News:

Durov, whose fortune was estimated by Forbes at $15.5 billion, said some governments had sought to pressure him but the app should remain a “neutral platform” and not a “player in geopolitics”.

Telegram’s increasing popularity, however, has prompted scrutiny from several countries in Europe, including France, on security and data breach concerns.

Russia’s representative to international organisations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, and several other Russian politicians were quick on Sunday to accuse France of acting as a dictatorship — the same criticism that Moscow faced when putting demands on Durov in 2014 and trying to ban Telegram in 2018.

What I know of Durov, he's not the kind of person to take this lying down. If they want to hold a trial on freedom of speech, he will embrace it and expose the authorities as the jack-booted thugs they are.

Europe
Despite border security woes, Middle East war, decades-long plan for European army now all but dead
[JustTheNews] Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Defense called the notion “unrealistic and unaffordable.”

The likelihood of a European army – years in the potential making so that European nations could unite in defense of mutual enemies – appears all but dead now.

The idea dates back to the 1950s, and appeared to reemerged in earnest about eight years ago.

French President Emmanuel Macron and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel each expressed their support for such an army, particularly Macron in 2018 when the U.S. withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and amid then-President Donald Trump's protests that NATO member nations weren't paying their share to protect against mutual foes.

Earlier this year, the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani again touched on the idea – only to received almost immediate pushback from his country’s European allies.

“If we want to be peacekeepers in the world, we need a European military,” he said, amid the global migration and related border-security issues the U.S. also faces.

“In a world with powerful players like the United States, China, India, Russia, and with crises from the Middle East to the Pacific … we can only be protected by the European Union,” which “must be prepared,” he also said.

Tajani is also Italy’s deputy prime minister, and his country was a founding member of the European Union, NATO and of the Group of Seven (G-7) countries, with Italy holding the group's rotating presidency this year.

So his words had weight, and they sent a chill across Europe.

Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Defense called the notion “unrealistic and unaffordable.”

The Defense Ministry in Copenhagen said: “Denmark does not support establishing an EU army.”

There were similar comments from France, Poland, Slovenia and elsewhere in the EU.

Most criticisms focused on the bureaucratic hurdles for forming such a force, and the current structure that has most European militaries working within the context of NATO.

The prevailing thought now is that Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential nominee, if reelected, would not outright quit NATO but would take a big step back in what Trump adviser Dan Caldwell calls a “radical reorientation” of the group.

So why is a European army – which would draw money and troops from the European nations and operate under a central command – not on the table for most Europeans?

“There are superficial similarities between the United States in the 18th Century and the European Union today,” Gregory Alegi, a historian and political scientist who specializes in U.S. history for LUISS University in Rome, told Just the News. “Both started as confederations of autonomous states that began a process of deepening ties between them.”

But Alegi noted that the U.S. had a national army and a powerful chief executive (the president) before it had a common currency and a single economy. The European Union has done those things in reverse order.

“The European Union of today is more like the United States under the flawed Articles of Confederation than to the U.S. Constitution that replaced it,” Alegi said.

“Under the Articles of Confederation there was no president, the country was led by the president of the Continental Congress and that person had no power when Congress was not in session. It’s a lot like the European Union of today.”

Alegi said that in 1957, when the seeds of the European Union were planted with the six-nation European Economic Community there were talks of establishing a common army, but the idea never gained much traction.

“The notion collapsed because there was a fear it would be dominated by one country, it would have been France at the time,” he continued. “Remember this is in the wake of World War II. Domination by one country was a frightening idea.”

The historian said that while the European Union was not wired to include a European Army, he predicted it would happen eventually. But not in the near term.

“Europe is often described as an economic giant and a military and political dwarf,” Alegi said. “If Europe wants to play a role in the world it’s not enough to have lofty ideas about human rights and how the world should work. It must have the ability to support those ideas, which means taking a stance and backing them up. Europe has been slow on that, but they will have to do it. There is no alternative.”
Sure. Except that not one of the Western European countries is willing to spend the money. And those Eastern European countries who are growing their militaries are — very reasonably — not willing to be made the unpaid mercenaries for Western European fads and fancies.

Trump can now deploy ex-Democrat 'power rangers' RFK Jr., Musk and Gabbard to prod bigger exodus
[JustTheNews] RFK signals there are more Democrats willing to defect to join a "unity party" under Trump where dissent and disagreement will be tolerated.

When Robert F Kennedy Jr. formally divorced the party his family once ruled as kingmakers, he opened the door for more Democrats to follow suit in embracing Donald Trump in 2024 and creating a "unity party" where Americans can disagree and debate without destroying each other.

“I attended my first Democratic Convention at the age of six in 1960,” Kennedy fondly recalled Friday of the era when his uncle John and father Robert Sr. ruled the Democratic establishment. “Back then, the Democrats were the champions of the constitution, and of civil rights. The Democrats stood against authoritarianism, against censorship, against colonialism, imperialism and unjust wars."

“We were the party of labor, of the working class,” he added. “The Democrats were the party of government transparency and the champion of the environment. Our party was the bulwark against big money interests and corporate power. True to its name, it was the party of democracy,” he said during a nationally televised press conference Friday where he announced he was suspending his independent presidential campaign and backing Trump.

Kennedy argued he didn’t leave the Democrat Party, but rather that “it had departed so dramatically from the core values that I grew up with” that it left him and other traditional Democrats like him.

“It has become the party of war, censorship, corruption, Big Pharma, Big Tech, Big Ag and big money,” he declared.

With that political indictment, Kennedy opened an unprecedented political door for defection. And standing at the threshold are two other celebrity defectors: billionaire tech innovator Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard.

Even Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, echoed similar sentiment, saying on X that "We may disagree with RFK Jr. about many things, but he’s right about how the Democratic Party uses lawfare and dirty tricks to suppress democratic competition and voter choice. The Dems preach about ‘saving democracy,’ but in reality they’re working overtime to stamp it out."

The lonely death of a jailed Russian pianist who opposed war
[BBC] While the US and Russia were busy finalising the biggest exchange of prisoners since the Cold War, a gifted but little-known Russian pianist was dying in silence in jail.

Pavel Kushnir had protested repeatedly against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and began a hunger strike soon after his arrest in May, later refusing water too.

He died, slowly and without publicity, on 28 July - four days before a group of better-known dissidents were swapped for Kremlin spies, sleeper agents and killers imprisoned in the West.

After his lonely death, at a pre-trial detention centre in Birobidzhan in Russia’s Far East, the 39-year-old was mourned by only 11 people at his cremation.

Svetlana Kaverzina, an independent politician in Siberia, said no-one had tried to talk him out of sacrificing himself because they hadn’t been aware what was happening.

"We couldn’t chip in and send him a lawyer - we didn’t know," she wrote on the Telegram messaging app. "He was alone."

Greek Coast Guard Open Fire on People Smuggling Boat, Killing One
[Breitbart] The crew of a Greek coast guard vessel opened fire on a speedboat smuggling migrants – including several children – from neighboring Turkey killing one passenger, Greek authorities said Friday.

A coast guard statement said shots were fired, first into the air and then at the speedboat’s engine “to avert the direct threat to the patrol boat and its crew” after the helmsman rammed the Greek patrol boat in a bid to escape arrest.

When the boat came to a halt, the statement said, the passenger was found fatally wounded, “probably by a bullet.”

The remaining 13 people on the plastic speedboat – 5 children, 7 men and a woman – were unharmed and were taken to the southeast Aegean Sea island of Symi. The dead passenger was identified as a 39-year-old man. His nationality was not immediately known.

The statement said the incident occurred northwest of Symi after the helmsman of the smuggling boat ignored multiple calls to stop. It said he “repeatedly carried out extremely dangerous maneuvers, ramming the patrol boat.”

The coast guard said the migrant smuggling vessel had been heading from the nearby Turkish coast to Symi.

Two of the men on the speedboat were arrested on suspicion of belonging to a migrant smuggling gang.

Thousands of migrants try to reach Greece’s eastern Aegean islands in small boats every year. In most cases they pay smuggling rings to carry them across, and in several incidents the Greek coast guard has reported attempted rammings by smugglers seeking to escape arrest.

Greece has been roundly criticized by human rights organizations over the treatment of migrants trying to reach its shores. In June, it denied a BBC report that accused its coast guard of brutal practices resulting in dozens of deaths.

According to data from the United Nations refugee agency, nearly 30,000 migrants have arrived illegally in Greece so far this year from Turkey, and, increasingly, from Libya in North Africa.

The number of arrivals is slightly lower than in Italy and Spain, the main destinations for migrants trying to reach Europe illegally. Most people heading for Greece are Afghan, Syrian or Egyptian nationals.

South Carolina to Execute First Inmate in More than 13 Years
[Breitbart] The state of South Carolina is set to execute its first convict in more than 13 years after pharmaceutical companies resumed supplying it with lethal injection drugs.

Companies refused to sell the drugs to the state for several years due to concerns that sales would have to be disclosed to the public, but state legislators changed the law in May to keep the names of the drug providers anonymous, according to the Associated Press (AP).

In July, South Carolina’s Supreme Court decided to permit the resumption of executions, which also includes the electric chair and firing squad as options, CNN reported.

The state’s first execution since 2011 will be of 46-year-old Freddie Eugene Owens, who is scheduled to be put to death on September 20 for the 1997 murder of Irene Graves, a single mother of three who was working the overnight shift at a Greenville County gas station when Owens robbed it, the South Carolina Daily Gazette reported.

Owens and his friends were on a robbery spree on Halloween night when he shot Graves in the head “after she said she did not know the combination to the safe at the Speedway gas station,” the outlet stated.

The day after Owens was convicted of murder in 1999, he also killed his cellmate at the Greenville County Jail.

At his sentencing hearing the next day, he confessed to the second killing and said, “I really did it because I was wrongly convicted of murder.”

Owens has been fighting the death sentence but has exhausted his appeals — being re-sentenced to death three separate times.

His attorney is still waiting to receive a sworn statement about the “purity, potency, and quality” of the lethal drug from prison officials, the AP stated.

“The lack of transparency about the source of the execution drugs, how they were obtained, and whether [they] can bring about as painless a death as possible is still of grave concern to the lawyers that represent persons on death row,” lawyer John Blume told the outlet.

Walz Inflated Background, Claimed Harvard Was Behind China Classes
[Breitbart] Democrat vice-presidential candidate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) was caught inflating his background and making it seem like Harvard University was behind a teaching program in China in which he participated, according to a recent report.

A report from the Washington Free Beacon found that Walz had lied about being “named the Outstanding Young Nebraskan by the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce,” and seemingly implying that Harvard University was behind a teaching program, and had picked Walz for “an opportunity” to teach in China through a university program. The program, WorldTeach, was founded in 1986 by several graduates from Harvard University, according to the organization’s LinkedIn page.

Both lies appear in his biography in an archived version of his campaign website in 2006 as he was running for Congress.

This comes after Walz previously falsely claimed that his children were conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), claimed that he had carried weapons of war “in war,” and that he had retired as a “command sergeant major” when he had actually retired as a Master Sergeant.

“With his teaching degree complete, Harvard University offered Walz an opportunity to gain a new perspective on global education by teaching in the People’s Republic of China,” Walz’s biography on the archived website says. “Working in China during 1989-1990, Walz was a member of one of the first government sanctioned groups of American educators to teach in Chinese high schools.”

The outlet noted that Walz’s congressional biography had allegedly “said the same thing,” and that a 2018 biography allegedly implied that Walz had been teaching in China through the WorldTeach program, “a program at Harvard University.”

The program in question is the WorldTeach program, a nonprofit founded by Harvard undergraduates, including the Nobel Prize-winning economist Michael Kremer, in 1986. For a time, the program was funded by Harvard’s Phillips Brooks House Association, which the Harvard Crimson has characterized as “a student-run community service group” that disburses resources to an array of nonprofit organizations and facilitates volunteerism for Harvard students. WorldTeach, which is currently dormant, does not appear to have ever been an official program of Harvard.

A 2001 article in the Harvard Gazette notes that WorldTeach, which began as a “student-run organization,” was “sponsored by the Center for International Development (CID)” and was “an independent nonprofit organization.”

WorldTeach got its start as a student-run organization in the Phillips Brooks House 15 years ago. Although it is sponsored by the Center for International Development (CID), WorldTeach is now an independent nonprofit organization. The center finances eight spots for Harvard students in WorldTeach’s 2-year-old summer undergraduate internship.

Science & Technology
Smart particle could hold climate change key
[BBC] A climate tech company has won an £8m investment to mass produce tiny particles that can be "programmed" to soak up and store greenhouse gases.

Promethean Particles, in Nottingham, is working with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) - tiny nanoparticles that have extremely large internal surface areas.

One teaspoon of the super adsorbent particles contains the equivalent area of two tennis courts.

The company is hoping to use the new financing, which has been led by Mercia Ventures and Aramco Ventures, to build a bigger manufacturing facility and expand its team.

It is also aiming to drive down the price of MOFs from tens of thousands of pounds to just £25 per kilo.

The key to reducing the price and scaling up production would be to make the nanoparticles from cheap, widely available metals such as zinc and magnesium.

James Stephenson, chief executive officer (CEO) of Promethean, said: "MOFs are an incredible class of materials that have shown all kinds of potential in lots of applications."

Their internal surfaces can be lab-engineered to become "sticky" for different gases.

Out in the real world, the nanoparticles can act as both mini-sponges and mini-sieves, able to both separate and store large volumes of different gases.

These properties could be used to reduce the climate impact of producing cement, metals and energy, which continue to emit huge quantities of greenhouse gases.

MOF particles from Promethean are already being used in a prototype carbon capture unit at Drax power station in Yorkshire.

ANALYSIS
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has long been proposed as essential to national plans for a carbon-neutral future.

The idea is that carbon dioxide from energy-hungry industries is intercepted before it enters the atmosphere and is then transported for permanent storage deep underground.

The UK has announced several carbon capture projects as part of its pledge to capture and store 20 to 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by 2030.

Yet so far, CCS has proved expensive and energy-intensive. No large-scale project is yet up and running.

Critics see it as a dangerous distraction from the need to rapidly reduce emissions.

The potential for MOFs to first filter out greenhouse gases at source, and then store them for easier transportation, is what has got the experts excited.

But up to now, the cost of these nanoparticles has made that eye-wateringly expensive.

If MOFs could be produced for a fraction of the current price, it could be a game-changer for CCS and good news for a fast-warming planet.

But this is not new – my father played that game very successfully in his oncology research starting in the 1960s. Before that, he was the one in charge of handing out the money, and so could apply more objective scientific standards.

[Miami Independent] PINELLAS COUNTY BREAKING: Thousands Of Undeliverable 'Vote By Mail' Ballots Were Cast On Aug 20 Primary Election

According to data obtained from the Florida Secretary of State's office, and run through the National Change of Address and USPS systems, thousands of ballots that were undeliverable have been found to have been cast during the Aug 20 primary election in Pinellas County.

The data was run through investigate journalist Peter Bernegger's 'Titan' system to match ballots listed as undeliverable, and still cast.

In one specific example, 6,375 ballots were cast where the voter had moved permanently out of state, and no longer able to vote in Florida elections. The ballots should have been returned as undeliverable.

In another example, 3,515 ballots were cast for voters who had moved and left no forwarding address.

In other words, there is no way these voters would have been able to cast a ballot that was never received.

These are just two examples of many more thousands of ballots that were listed as undeliverable.

Somehow, these ballots were harvested and cast.

This does not take into account ballots that could have been harvested from people unaware they 'requested' a ballot on June 23rd, when 219k 'mail-in ballots' were requested on a Sunday, when the PInellas elections office was closed.

Hundreds of affidavits have been collected from voters declaring they never requested a 'mail-in ballot' but still received one.

Requesting a ballot in someone else's name is illegal and a felony in Florida.

More from a Daily Mail article dated 9 August:
A teen terror suspect who plotted a bloodbath at a Taylor Swift concert in Austria was radicalised by a notorious hate-preacher in Berlin, it is believed.

Beran A., the 19-year-old ISIS fanatic who was building a bomb in his parents' back garden and planned to mow down concertgoers this week, was influenced online by Berlin's rabid hate preacher Abul Baraa, according to German intelligence sources cited by BILD.

Baraa - real name Ahmad Armih - is a well-known figure among Germany security services who has 46,000 Instagram followers and over 81,000 on TikTok.

Speaking to Bild newspaper, the Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany's equivalent of MI5, said: 'The closure of his Berlin mosque and the coronavirus pandemic led to greater engagement on social media.'

'His rhetoric and speaking style are particularly catching on with young people.'

It comes as images emerged of the garden and inconspicuous outhouse where Beran A. is said to have been constructing his suicide bomb while his parents were on holiday in their native North Macedonia.

A few years ago, Beran A.'s parents - who immigrated to Austria from North Macedonia - moved into a newly built house in the Neunkirchen district of Ternitz with him and his younger sister.

Ternitz residents told local media that Beran, who was born in Austria and attended a local school, used to be a 'harmless boy next door' often seen lounging around in jeans and trainers.

But neighbours claim he underwent a dramatic aesthetic and behavioural transformation coinciding with his pledge of allegiance to ISIS last month, adding he began growing out a bushy beard.

This feature was clearly visible in a shocking photo of the would-be terrorist posing with huge zombie knives and an ISIS flag unveiled yesterday by German media.

The 19-year-old was arrested in Ternitz Wednesday morning while a second teen, aged 17, was detained in the Austrian capital, according to director-general for public safety Franz Ruf.

It later emerged that Beran A. and his accomplice had planned to attack Swift's concert venue by driving into the crowd outside and attacking them with knives and machetes before detonating a suicide bomb to kill as many fans as possible.

Until two weeks ago, Beran A. had worked in the same stainless steel plant in Ternitz as his father.

He was doing an apprenticeship as a retail salesman in the factory, where he had access to the plant's laboratory, including various chemicals.

During a raid on the family home in Ternitz, bomb disposal experts this week secured chemicals required to produce the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP), which Beran A. is said to have already experimented with.

TATP is often used by ISIS in terror attacks and requires acetone as well as hydrogen peroxide, which officials confirmed was found in the house.

Ruf confirmed at a press conference yesterday that the suspect's 'preparatory action' in the home in Ternitz focused on the manufacturing of explosives.

The head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, said Beran A. was 'clearly radicalised in the direction of the Islamic State and thinks it is right to kill infidels'.

Beran A.'s parents and sister reportedly are currently on holiday in North Macedonia, but police is expected to question the parents over their son upon their return.

Following his arrest, the teen fully confessed to his plans to 'kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue', Austrian security officials said.

His planned terror attack was supposed to end with him detonating his homemade bomb and killing himself in the process, according to the Austrian Heute newspaper.

Firebrand preacher Baraa, who is said to have played a part in radicalising the terror suspects, once preached at the infamous 'As-Sahaba Mosque' in Berlin.

Police raided this mosque in 2018 on suspicion of terrorist financing and later shut it down.

The location had been a hub for radical Islamists, including Reda Seyam, a high-ranking German member of ISIS, and Denis Cuspert, one of Germany's most notorious ISIS fighters.

Following the closure of the mosque, Baraa moved his preaching online, where he continued to spread extremist ideology.

In his videos, he chillingly refers to the 'kuffar' (infidels) waging war against Islam, urging his followers to resist this perceived oppression.

'How long will this humiliation go on... how far will this go, with this war, with this terrorism of the kuffar against the Muslims?' Baraa asks in one of his inflammatory sermons.

His influence has grown over the years, with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution noting that he has become a 'star' in the Islamist scene, despite multiple investigations against him.

Insane moment supercars do donuts around gang of people trapped inside a ring of FIRE while youths hang out the window in street takeover that saw one person shot dead
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A chaotic street takeover across California's Bay Area saw vehicles doing donuts around spectators trapped inside a ring of fire while other youths hung out the windows.

It even turned fatal at one point, when two shootings left one person dead and another in critical condition.

Terrifying footage from the unruly event obtained by ABC 7 shows people lighting a ring of fire at the intersection of BW Williams Drive and Lewis Brown Drive in Vallejo just after midnight on Saturday, and multiple people jumping in as cars drove donuts around them.

At times, the vehicles appeared to get uncomfortably close to the ring of fire, as teenagers stuck their heads out of the windows.

The street takeover lasted about an hour before Vallejo police dispersed the crowd - during which time there were at least two shootings, according to KRON.

Officers said the two shootings that saw at least 20 shots fired erupted on the outskirts of the sideshow - which saw about 400 to 500 vehicles performing stunts - early Saturday morning.

The Solano County Sheriff's Office eventually responded to the scene, and located an unidentified male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Police say first responders rendered emergency aid, but the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another victim is currently in critical condition.

The Vallejo Police Department is now investigating the shooting, as a motive remains unclear.

Yet the violence apparently did not deter the revelers - who are said to have moved the street takeover later to Crockett, where another ring of fire was lit at the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and Merchant Street at around 1am, according to CBS News.

Witnesses told ABC 7 dozens of people blocked intersections during the street takeover and even the off-ramp to Interstate 80.

But police broke up the crowd after just 25 minutes, and four people were arrested, according to ABC 7.

Still, the chaos continued - with a street takeover involving about 50 cars reported in Richmond at around 1.40am.

Police were able to disperse the crowd without any arrests or citations, NBC Bay Area reports.

But less than hour later, Richmond police were called to respond to another sideshow - this time involving 100 vehicles.

Officers then attempted to disperse the group, but a vehicle drove at the officers in an attempt to flee - prompting a short pursuit.

Ultimately, the unidentified driver yielded to officers and was taken into custody without incident, Richmond police say.

He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony evading, and has been booked into Richmond Police Department Jail.

The suspect's vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

Meanwhile, in Oakland, police said they broke up a sideshow after just 20 minutes.

Now, Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell says more needs to be done as sideshows have become common occurrences in the Bay Area.

'You know, you have 300, 400, 500 cars. I don't care how large your police department is, it's not going to be enough,' he told NBC Bay Area,

'You're going to have to have outside help, and I think there are things that need to be done legislatively as well,' he said, adding: 'I would love to see the penalty increase substantially.'

Eight most shocking revelations from the Nord Stream sabotage plot
BLUF:
[Washington Examiner] According to one officer involved in the operation and three people familiar with it, speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky originally approved of the operation. Valery Zaluzhny, then the commander in chief of the armed forces, was in charge of it.
"Shocking" to some possibly.
However, in June 2022, the Dutch intelligence agency MIVD learned of the plot and tipped off the CIA. After approaching Zelensky, he decided to call the operation off. According to those familiar with the situation, Zaluzhny ignored the order and pressed onward.

After the operation, Zelensky reportedly angrily approached Zaluzhny. The military chief shrugged it off, suggesting that he had called it off too late.

"He was told it’s like a torpedo — once you fire it at the enemy, you can’t pull it back again, it just keeps going until it goes ’boom,’" a person familiar with the conversation said.

#2  In another scenario tendered at one point, Gazprom (majority owner of Nordtream 2) was under contract with several European countries to provide natural gas in specified quantities and at specified prices. After Germany suspended certification of the Nordsteam 2 pipeline in February 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, Gazprom could not fulfill its contractual obligations for NG delivery through it but also could not invoke 'Force Majeure' (which would relieve parties to a contract of performance of their contractual obligations in the event of an occurrence outside the control of the parties such as natural disasters, war, terrorism, government actions, riots and strikes) under international trade laws. These being as follows:

#1 - the Ukraine 'Special Military Operation' was not classified as a war by Russia (Gazprom's headquarters and NG delivery source country), so that condition didn't exist within the trade laws.

#2 - It was Germany's 'government action' that stopped the NG flow, not Russia's (again, Gazprom's NG origination point).

#3 - There was no 'Civil Unrest' or 'Terrorism' in Russia at the time.

Gazprom needed to create a Force Majeure condition, without making it seem as if the Russian government was involved in any way, in order to vacate their existing contracts.

Data refutes Pritzker's DNC claims about Illinois economy
(The Center Square) — Gov. J.B. Pritzker used the spotlight at the Democratic National Convention to highlight the successes of Illinois and the Democratic Party, but the president of a nonprofit think tank says the numbers don’t add up.

Pritzker said there is no better place to see that change is possible under Democratic leadership than in Illinois. Democrats currently hold the super-majority in the Illinois legislature.

"If you look at the statistics, we are at the bottom of the barrel for most things that matter to most people," said Ted Dabrowski, president of Wirepoints. "When it comes to jobs, incomes and economic growth, safety, all those things."

Pritzker claimed that Democrats are champions of jobs, but as Dabrowski points out, there are 85,000 fewer Illinoisans employed today than when Pritzker took office five years ago, and the state’s unemployment rate is the second-worst in the country.

"We don’t have business-friendly laws, our pension debt is the biggest in the country and it sucks up a lot of money so it makes our economy worse," said Dabrowski. "We have a lot of corruption, of course, too many units of government, all those things get in the way of companies doing what they do best and that is hiring and growing."

Data from the Economic Policy Institute shows that Illinois’ Black unemployment rate is at a staggering 8.8%, which is the third worst behind only Kentucky and Ohio.

"Governor Pritzker, Mayor Johnson, all of them are so obsessed about equity, and they keep using the terms equity and progressive values, but if you look at what their policies do to minorities, it’s really sad," said Dabrowski.

Dabrowski notes that Illinois has had the 3rd-biggest loss of population since the last decennial count was completed in 2020, with a drop of more than 240,000 people. On the other hand, Texas and Florida gained more than 1 million in population over the three years.

French authorities hunt for arsonist who targeted synagogue, injured police officer UPDATE: They got him! 3 arrested
Follow up to this story from yesterday.
[FoxNews] About 200 police officers hunted on Saturday for a man who tried to set fire to a synagogue in the southern French city of La Grande-Motte, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, adding that authorities would be ruthless with antisemitism.

A police officer was slightly injured when a gas bottle exploded as police secured the site of the attack on Saturday morning, Attal said.

"The person (attacker) set fire to several entry doors to the synagogue and several cars," Attal said after visiting the synagogue, adding that an "absolute tragedy" had been narrowly averted after firefighters and police arrived quickly at the scene.

Local media reported earlier that the suspect had set fire to two cars, one of which contained at least one gas bottle, in the synagogue's parking area at about 8:30 a.m. (0630 GMT).

President Emmanuel Macron called the incident a terrorist attack. The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office was placed in charge of the investigation.

La Grande-Motte is a port and resort city on the French Mediterranean coast.
Update from the Times of Israel at 11:50 a.m.ET:
Police arrested a man suspected of setting fires and causing a kaboom at a synagogue in southern La Belle France on Saturday in what officials suspect was a terror attack, the country’s interior minister said.

"The suspected perpetrator of the criminal fires at the synagogue has been detained," minister Gerald Darmanin said on X, adding that officers who made the arrest came under fire.

Police had said they were hunting for a man who, draped in a Paleostinian flag, was believed to have set fires at a synagogue and triggered a kaboom that injured an officer in the seaside resort of La Grande Motte.

An official source who asked not to be named told AFP the arrest took place in the nearby town of Nimes. An official in the state prosecution service added that two people associated with the suspect were also detained.
More from Breitbart:
BFM TV said the suspect was a 33-year-old Algerian. Local police declined to give further details, Rooters reports.

"Before the police could intervene, (the suspect) opened fire on the (police), which returned fire. The man was maimed in the face," the office said in a statement describing the moments leading up to the apprehension and arrest.

Two other people were taken into custody after the incident.

Olde Tyme Religion
We Don't Know, So Must Make Our Lives Count
[MyJewishLearning] Like other spiritual traditions, Judaism offers a range of views on the afterlife, including some parallels to the concepts of heaven and hell familiar to us from popular Western (i.e., Christian) teachings. While in traditional Jewish thought the subjects of heaven and hell were treated extensively, most modern Jewish thinkers have shied away from this topic, preferring to follow the biblical model, which focuses on life on earth.

The subject of death is treated inconsistently in the Bible, though most often it suggests that physical death is the end of life. This is the case with such central figures as Abraham, Moses, and Miriam.

There are, however, several biblical references to a place called Sheol (cf. Numbers 30, 33). It is described as a region "dark and deep," "the Pit," and "the Land of Forgetfulness," where human beings descend after death. The suggestion is that in the netherworld of Sheol, the deceased, although cut off from God and humankind, live on in some shadowy state of existence.

While this vision of Sheol is rather bleak (setting precedents for later Jewish and Christian ideas of an underground hell) there is generally no concept of judgment or reward and punishment attached to it. In fact, the more pessimistic books of the Bible, such as Ecclesiastes and Job, insist that all of the dead go down to Sheol, whether good or evil, rich or poor, slave or free man.

I don’t worry about such things, figuring I’ll find out when the times comes. Then, if God and I disagree, we can discuss the subject — it’s ancient Jewish tradition that goes back at least to Abraham.

Israel launches huge bombing campaign inside Lebanon while Hezbollah terrorists fire more than TWO Three HUNDRED rockets in revenge attack that's plunged Tel Aviv into a warzone
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Israeli jets have launched airstrikes in Lebanon after their military said Hezbollah was preparing to fire rockets and missiles towards Israel.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said: 'In a self-defense act to remove these threats, the (Israeli military) is striking terror targets in Lebanon, from which Hezbollah was planning to launch their attacks on Israeli civilians. Hagari warned Hezbollah would 'soon fire rockets, and possibly missiles and drones' into Israel.

Shortly after their announcement, Hezbollah announced they had launched an attack on Israel with a large number of drones in retaliation for the killing of one of its commanders, Fuad Shukr. Shukr was wiped out by an Israeli airstrike after being lured toward the top of a building in Beirut.

Hezbollah said the attack was targeting 'a qualitative Israeli military target that will be announced later' as well as 'targeting a number of enemy sites and barracks and Iron Dome platforms.' It said the strikes were an initial response to the killing of Fouad Shukur, a top commander with the group, in a strike in Beirut's southern suburbs last month.

An intelligence official told The New York Times that Israel's preemptive attack was aimed at missile launchers that had been programmed to fire at 5 a.m. local time towards Tel Aviv. The official told the outlet that all the launchers that had been targeted were destroyed, and that Israel was anticipating a harsh response from Hezbollah.

Sirens began sounding in northern Israel soon after the warning from the Israeli military, and additional sirens later joined in across the north.

Lebanese media reported strikes in the country's south without immediately providing more details. Social media footage showed what appeared to be strikes in southern Lebanon.

Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport outside Tel Aviv began diverting incoming flights and delaying others due to takeoff Sunday after the Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.

In his statement, Hagari added: 'We can see that Hezbollah is preparing to launch an extensive attack on Israel, while endangering the Lebanese civilians.

'We warn the civilians located in the areas where Hezbollah is operating to move out of harm's way immediately for their own safety'. Hagari didn't provide additional details on the intelligence he cited.

While the IDF X page added: 'Hezbollah has just launched over 150 projectiles from Lebanon toward Israeli territory. We target terrorist infrastructure, they target civilians.'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, were managing the latest operation from military headquarters in Tel Aviv. Gallant declared a 'special situation on the home front,' and Netanyahu's Security Cabinet was set to meet later Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the National Security Council, Sean Savett, said President Joe Biden was 'closely monitoring events in Israel and Lebanon'.

Savett said: 'At his direction, senior U.S. officials have been communicating continuously with their Israeli counterparts.
I can imagine just how much that is welcomed by the Israelis.
'We will keep supporting Israel's right to defend itself, and we will keep working for regional stability.'

Fears have been high in recent weeks that the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip would spill over into a regional conflict. This was only exacerbated after the killing of Hezbollah commander Shukr and the suspected Israeli assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Shukr, who was responsible for the 1983 massacre of 241 American and 58 French troops in a Beirut bombing, was killed on July 30, along with his wife, two other women, and two children. 80 people were also injured in the strike, which was attributed to the IDF.

The Wall Street Journal revealed that Shukr received a call from someone who told him to go from the second floor of the building he was in to his apartment on the seventh floor. A Hezbollah official told the newspaper that he was easier to target on the higher floor. The official added that the call likely came from someone who had breached the terror group's communications network, adding that Israeli intelligence had likely beaten its counter surveillance measures through better technology and hacking capabilities.

Shukr, long known as the 'Ghost' because of how rarely he was seen in public, is believed to have first gone into hiding after he helped plan the 1985 hijacking of a TWA flight from Athens to the US.

Haniyeh, who had escaped the horrors of the war in Gaza while residing in Qatar, travelled to Iran to attend the inauguration of new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian earlier this month.

Israel appeared to seize the chance to hit Haniyeh, attacking his residence in Tehran in the early hours of the morning and killing the Hamas leader along with a security guard.

The assassination, confirmed by both Hamas and Iranian authorities, marks the most high-profile killing since October 7.
Courtesy of Grom the Reflective, Ynet adds:
Starting at 5:30 a.m., approximately 150 rockets were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel within less than an hour, targeting areas from the Golan Heights to the western Galilee. Several impacts were reported, along with dozens of successful interceptions. The IDF is conducting operations in the north without direct U.S. involvement but in coordination with the U.S. military.Residents reported power outages in parts of Acre after sirens were heard in the coastal city.

Navy to sideline 17 vessels due to manpower shortage, operating crews will be redistributed: report
[FoxNews] Retiring the vessels would free up around 700 sailors and marines for redistribution

The Navy will reportedly sideline 17 vessels due to a manpower shortage that makes it difficult to properly crew and operate ships across the fleet.

There just aren't enough Merchant Marines to keep all the ships going at once, according to Rear Admiral (Ret.) Mark Montgomery, senior director of the Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation for the Foundation for Defense of Democracy, told Fox News Digital. Merchant Marines operate the many support vessels needed to keep the Navy running.

"The problem, of course, is the ships are at sea, away from home port 12 months of the year," Montgomery said. "So you need two crews … we're desperately short of the number of people."

"There’s a lack of experienced merchant mariners to crew the ships, and this is really a clear danger to national security," Montgomery added.

The Military Sealift Command drafted a plan to put 17 ships into "extended maintenance," which would include a redistribution of crews to other vessels across the Navy, the U.S. Naval Institute reported.

The ships include two replenishment ships, one fleet oiler, a dozen Spearhead-class Expeditionary Fast Transports and two forward-deployed Navy expeditionary sea bases – the USS Lewis Puller, based in Bahrain and the USS Herschel "Woody" Williams, based in Souda Bay, Greece.

The effort is known as the "great reset" and is awaiting approval from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti. The change will reduce Navy demands for officers by 700 mariners.

The U.S. military has suffered some recruiting problems over the past few years, most notably in the Army, which had to cut its force by 24,000 – roughly 5% of jobs – in 2024 to account for recruiting shortfalls. The Army stressed that it is not asking current soldiers to leave but is aiming to affect posts that have remained empty.

#1  They're slitting the fleet's throat - one of the few advantages we still have is our ability to keep the fleet supplied and fighting at the far end of nowhere. We give that up, especially in the Pacific, and we're back to the first six months of WWII.

#7  One reason why those 'we need more ships' analysis types are a problem is that we can't provide the personnel to keep the ships operating.

We are going to need ships which require very small crews as well as all kinds of quasi autonomous devices to guard the ship and project offense.

a day earlier.

Two died when they were hit by an bomb planted on the outside of a building they were searching in Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, the regime said.

It added that the third soldier was killed in festivities with Paleostinian fighters in the Netzarim Corridor.

According to the Israeli military, a total of 338 soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the regime began its ground offensive there in mid-October.

Paleostinian resistance groups say the toll is much higher as the regime hides the real number of its military casualties amid growing public discontent over the Israeli cabinet's handling of the war and its failure to release dozens of captives still held in Gaza.

Protests have been taking place on an almost daily basis in Israel in the past months, demanding the cabinet of PM Benjamin Netanyahu accept a ceasefire deal for Gaza in order to secure the release of the captives.

Netanyahu however has remained adamant, with critics saying that he is prolonging the war to achieve his own political purposes amid corruption charges. He is facing trial after he was charged with fraud, bribery and breach of trust in cases filed in 2019. Netanyahu can be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail if convicted in a bribery case.

Strip, the Israel Defense Forces announced on Saturday, bringing the toll of slain troops over the weekend to four.

Two of the soldiers whose deaths were announced on Saturday night were killed in a kaboom in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood, which claimed the life of another reservist whose death was announced on Friday. The third soldier was killed in a separate clash with Paleostinian button men in a nearby area.

The troops slain in the blast in Gaza City were named as Sgt. First Class (res.) Danil Pechenyuk, 27, from Bat Yam, and Sgt. First Class (res.) Nitai Metodi, 23, from Ashkelon. They both served in the Jerusalem Brigade’s 6310th Battalion.

The soldier killed during the separate clash was named as Sgt. Maj. (res.) Yaniv Itzhak Oren, 35, of the Jerusalem Brigade’s 8119th Battalion, from Ein Gedi.

In the incident on Friday morning, several soldiers were hit by an bomb planted on the outside of a building they were searching, in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood. In all, three soldiers were killed, four were seriously maimed, and another three were moderately hurt in the incident.

On Friday, the IDF announced the death of Sgt. First Class (res.) Evyatar Atuar, who was killed in the attack. The families of the other two soldiers were notified over the weekend.

Oren was killed several hours later during a clash with terror operatives in the Netzarim Corridor area, just south of Zeitoun.

According to the military, a cell of four Hamas button men attacked an IDF encampment in the Netzarim Corridor. The troops were able to fight back, killing three of them, while a fourth fled. A short while later, the fourth gunman was killed in an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
, the IDF said.

Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip now stands at 338.

The IDF said reservists with the 252nd Division — including the Jerusalem Brigade — had been carrying out a "pinpoint" operation in Gaza City, during which several button men were killed.

on Saturday, the IDF issued a new evacuation warning for Paleostinians in the east Deir al-Balah and Maghazi area of central Gaza.

Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language front man, published a map of the zones that need to be evacuated.

Paleostinians in the area were called to move to the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone, which is currently around 42 square kilometers (16 square miles), or 11 percent of the total size of the Gaza Strip.

The zone is located in the al-Mawasi area on the southern Strip’s coast, western neighborhoods of Khan Younis, and central Gaza’s Deir al-Balah.

An overnight strike on a house west of Khan Younis killed 11 people, including a woman and four children, a doctor at Nasser Hospital said. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza on Saturday reported 69 deaths in the previous 48 hours.

First responders also recovered 16 bodies from the Hamad Town residential complex in Khan Younis after a partial pullout of Israeli forces, 10 bodies from a residential block west of Khan Younis, and two farther south in Rafah.

The circumstances of their deaths were not immediately clear, but the areas were repeatedly bombed by the Israeli military over the past week. An News Agency that Dare Not be Named journalist counted the bodies.

Some residents returned to Hamad Town, crunching on rubble as they walked between destroyed apartment buildings. One multi-story building’s entire wall was gone, its rooms framing residents picking through debris.

The IDF’s 98th Division had been operating in the Hamad Town area, as well as on the outskirts of Deir al-Balah in recent weeks.

On Saturday, the IDF said a Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
tunnel located on the outskirts of Deir al-Balah was demolished by combat engineers.

The tunnel was some 500 meters long, according to the military.

It had been located by the 7th Armored Brigade’s 82nd Battalion and later demolished by the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit.

The IDF said the 7th Brigade has killed dozens of button men and demolished dozens of sites belonging to terror groups in the east Deir al-Balah area amid an ongoing operation.

Soldiers of the brigade’s 77th Battalion also located a primed rocket launcher in the area, the IDF added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently...
the military said troops of the 162nd Division killed dozens of button men over the past day in close-quarters combat and by directing airstrikes in the neighborhood of Tel Sultan, in southern Gaza’s Rafah.

Separately, the IDF said Saturday that fighter jets carried out an airstrike in Gaza overnight that killed a prominent Hamas operative involved in the production of weapons.

2 former Boilermakers Union presidents among 7 indicted in $20 million theft
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Two former Boilermakers Union presidents are among seven former and current union officials indicted Thursday for an alleged 15 year scheme to embezzle $20 million from the union.

The Justice Department said a federal grand jury in Kansas indicted former union presidents Newton Jones, 71, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Truman "Warren" Fairley, 59, of Chapel Hill along with five others.

"As alleged in the indictment, these defendants, including two former presidents of the Boilermakers Union, enriched themselves by spending millions of dollars in union funds for their own benefit, including for salary and benefits for no-show jobs, tuition, rent, luxury international travel, meals, vacation payouts, and unauthorized loans," DOJ Criminal Division head Nicole M. Argentieri said in a statement.

According to the indictment, the conspiracy to steal money from the union was led over the course of 15 years by former Boilermakers Union president Newton Jones and former secretary-treasurer William Creeden.

Charged were former union president Newton Jones, 71, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; former president Truman "Warren" Fairley, 59, of Chapel Hill; former secretary-treasurer William Creeden, 76, of Kearney, Mo.; former vice president Lawrence McManamon, 76, of Rocky River, Ohio; Kateryna Jones, 32, of Chapel Hill; and Cullen Jones 35, of Chapel Hill.

They allegedly stole the money from the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmith, Forgers and Helpers.

Kansas U.S. Attorney Kate E. Brubacher said in a statement, "Union members pay their dues believing union leaders will use the money in support of the organization's mission to advocate for and protect employment rights. The Department of Justice is deeply concerned whenever there are accusations of fraud and misappropriation of union funds."

The defendants face 20 years in prison if convicted on the RICO conspiracy count.

UN Mission Warns Against Military Showdown in Libyan Capital
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed deep concern regarding reports of troop mobilizations in the capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, including threats of using force to resolve the crisis surrounding the Central Bank of Libya. UNSMIL urgently calls for calm, tension reduction, and restraint, emphasizing that dialogue is the only viable solution to all disputes.

UNSMIL is actively engaging with all relevant parties to broker a peaceful agreement to address the Central Bank crisis.

The mission strongly criticizes the display of military force and armed confrontations in populated areas, deeming them unacceptable and a threat to the lives, security, and tranquility of civilians. UNSMIL considers these actions counterproductive, exacerbating the crisis and diminishing the prospects for a political resolution to the ongoing political deadlock.

Safety in Libya’s capital, Tripoli is continuously deteriorating, with threats of kidnapping and murder a daily occurrence for residents.

Over the years, kidnappings, arrests, and liquidations have increased substantially in western Libya. This is evident in the repeated statements of the Ministry of Interior, about the arrest of gangs and individuals involved in the kidnapping and extortion of expatriate workers.

In October 2022, the Head of the Zaher al-Jabal Police Station, Abdel-Salam Abdullah Abdel-Nabi, was assassinated by unknown assailants. Just days before, a policeman was assassinated in the same city. Despite this happening in full view of everyone, those at the helm of power do not move a finger to identify the perpetrators. The security authorities do not move to arrest them, or announce their names.

Salah Abdel-Salam, the former Executive Director of the Civil Society Commission of the Libyan Presidential Council, was kidnapped in central Tripoli.

The National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) said that there are reports of security forces being involved in the kidnapping of Abdel-Salam. There has been no contact with him since the incident, and the identity of the security agency that kidnapped him has not been established. So far, his fate remains unknown.

Libya ranked fourth in the Arab world, and twenty in the world, among the countries with the highest levels of organised crime, according to the report of the Global Initiative to Combat Crime (GLOBAL INITIATIVE).

#1  CAIRO (AP) — One of Libya's dueling authorities unilaterally fired the country's powerful central bank governor in an abrupt move that is likely to inflame tensions in the divided North African country.
The presidential council in the capital of Tripoli, which is allied with the government of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah that controls western Libya, removed Gov. Sadiq al-Kabir, according to a decree issued late Sunday.
In his place, the council appointed Mohamed Abdul Salam al-Shukri, an economist and former deputy governor, as the new governor for the Central Bank of Libya.
Al-Kabir had led the central bank since October 2011 — the year that Libya was plunged into chaos after a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi. During that time, he accumulated significant influence and power but also faced criticism from officials on both side of the country's political divide in allocating Libya's oil money. In recent months, that criticism has turned into calls for his removal.

Time Magazine Pays the Price for Lost Credibility
[NEWSBUSTERS] Last week in this space the focus was on Time magazine's glorification of now Democrat presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris
It is time for us to do what we have been doing. And that time is every day
The point was that the then-current cover of Time - an illustration of Harris that, as noted, presented her as ''a cross somewhere between Miss America and a religious icon'' - was in reality an illustration of just how the ''mainstream media'' was thoroughly in the tank for Democrats

and the Left in general, and, this election year, Harris in particular.

A week later, the New York Post is headlining another story about Time - a story that might be seen as reporting on the consequences for Time for tilting so visibly for Democrats.

The Post headline:

Time cuts 22 staffers at magazine, cites 'significant challenges' across media industry

The Post story reports:

Time is slashing 22 jobs as the volatile media environment continues to squeeze the iconic magazine.

Time chief executive officer Jessica Sibley said Tuesday that the company is slashing roles across several departments including editorial, technology, sales & marketing and Time Studios.

In a memo obtained by The Post, Sibley told staffers: ''It is incredibly hard to say goodbye to our talented colleagues; we are deeply grateful for their contributions to Time's culture, mission and legacy, and we will closely support them through this period of transition.''
"Security will help them pack their personal effects"
The CEO said the decision was made so that the company can build a ''sustainable'' future due to headwinds facing the industry and economic uncertainty.

—A rep for Time declined to comment on the company's headcount.

Time magazine was under fire earlier this month for its fawning cover story featuring Vice President Kamala Harris, despite her refusing an interview with the publication. Conservatives ripped the piece over the absence of Harris' voice and the vice president's opaque policy agenda.''

Project GENESIS: How Turkey Resurrected Its Secondhand Oliver Hazard Perry Class Frigates
Project GENESIS not only breathed new life into the aging Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates, but it also set the country up to build its own advanced warships.

by Tayfun Ozberk

[TWZ] The U.S. Oliver Hazard Perry (OHP) class frigates, dozens of which once served the U.S. Navy, are still actively used by a number countries. While they may all appear similar from the outside, upon a closer look, the OHP frigates of the Turkish Navy, known as the “Gabya” class, are significantly different. This transformation is due to the GENESIS project, a major initiative of the Turkish defense industry that has not only rejuvenated the combat capability of these second-hand warships, but has set Turkey on a path to independently developing its own more advanced warships.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE OHP FRIGATES IN THE TURKISH FLEET
The Turkish Navy started to use Gabya class frigates in the late 1990s when TCG Gaziantep (ex-USS Clifton Sprague) was commissioned in 1997. Between 1997 and 2003, eight Gabya class frigates were commissioned, and the ex-USS Duncan was purchased as the ninth ship and used as a spare parts source for the other eight vessels.

The Gabya class frigates, which were reactivated and put into service after the U.S. Navy decommissioned them, were used by the Turkish Navy for anti-air warfare (AAW) as their main mission function due to the medium-range SM-1 missiles they carried.

Since the late 1990s, these ships have been used in critical missions such as the non-combatant evacuation operation from Beirut in 2006 and Operation Unified Protector in Libya in 2011. They have also participated in numerous NATO and United Nations missions.

These ships, which have formed the backbone of the Turkish Navy by sailing thousands of hours every year since they entered service, have been subjected to a number of modernizations by the Turkish defense industry. These upgrades focused on countering modern threats more effectively, increasing compatibility in joint operations, enhancing detection and identification abilities by replacing outdated sensors with modern sensors, and increasing their firepower

On the possible offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Zaporizhia direction

– Over the past few weeks, versions of the plans of Ukrainian formations in other areas of the front, in addition to the Russian borderland, have continued to spread online. One of them could be the Zaporizhzhya direction, where the Ukrainian command has long been forming a strike force and saturating the units stationed there with fire weapons, including drones.

- One of the most probable scenarios for the Ukrainian Armed Forces' actions should be considered an enemy offensive in the vicinity of Kamenskoye. It is to the north of it, in the Primorskoye-Stepnogorsk area, that the future attack group is being built up, the goal of which, according to our data, may be either Tokmak with a subsequent attempt to cut off the land road to Crimea, or Energodar with the subsequent capture of the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

– Several signs, both direct and indirect, point to the enemy’s plans. Satellite reconnaissance is actively working in the interests of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, filming potential air defense position areas and headquarters of the Russian Armed Forces. At the same time, identical enemy points are also filmed in order to check camouflage.

- At the same time, Ukrainian formations have increased both the intensity of artillery attack and the use of drones, including in Energodar and nearby settlements. In addition to this, the enemy is striking forest belts, dugouts and shelters, preparing the ground for further advance.

– Also, the Ukrainian authorities are preparing the information ground for the further seizure of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is manifested both in accusations of alleged arson on the territory of the facility, and in statements by Vladimir Zelensky about the need to return the station.

– At the same time, the enemy’s plans to land troops on the Kinburn and Tendrovskaya spits, which have been discussed for some time, are far from being an invention of the guard-patriots. Moreover, even quite official persons have started talking about them.

– Ukrainian formations are seriously considering a combined operation to land troops by boats simultaneously with strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as a sabotage and reconnaissance group landing by helicopter.

While the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to participate in the "Kursk adventure" and are preparing to become more active in the same Zaporizhia region, the operational crisis of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is worsening in the Pokrovsk and Aleksandro-Kalinovsk directions.

Nevertheless, despite the suicidal nature of the plans being implemented, the Ukrainian command is ready to go for broke - they need both a media victory and a way to turn the tide of the conflict.

Israeli strikes on Syria kill three pro-Iran fighters — Naharnet
A war monitor said Israeli air strikes on Syria targeting positions of the army and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah killed three Iran-backed fighters on Friday.

"Israeli strikes have so far killed three pro-Iranian fighters and maimed about 10 others," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britannia-based war monitor said the strikes targeted "makeshift petrol stations affiliated to Hezbollah in the Homs countryside, and struck weapons depots belonging to the group as well as two Syrian army sites in the Hama countryside."

The Syrian defense ministry said the attacks "maimed seven civilians."

Egypt experiences a surge in the number of refugees fleeing conflict
[AFRICANEWS] Over 748,000 refugees and asylum-seekers are registered with UNHCR Egypt, a majority of whom are women and kiddies who have recently arrived in Egypt fleeing the brutal conflict that started in Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
in April 2023. Since the conflict broke, the registered Sudanese refugee population has grown almost sevenfold and numbers are expected to keep rising.

With needs growing exponentially, resources are running thin for the Government of Egypt, UN agencies and other strategic partners to provide refugee and host community children with safe, protective quality learning spaces.

The 2024 Sudan Regional Refugee Response plan calls for $109 million to respond to refugee education needs across the region. To date, only 20 percent of this amount has been mobilized, including $4.3 million — or 40 percent of the requirement for Egypt.

On a high-level UN mission to Egypt this week, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), UNHCR and UNICEF stressed the funding shortfall and called for urgent increased international support for children forcibly displaced by the armed conflict, both inside Sudan itself and in neighboring countries.

While the Government of Egypt has taken notable steps to provide refugees with access to education services, with 9,000 children arriving every month, approximately 54 percent of newly arrived children are currently out of school, according to a recent assessment by UNICEF and the World Bank.

''Families fleeing the brutal conflict in Sudan have endured the most unspeakable violence and seen their lives ripped apart. For girls and boys uprooted by the internal armed conflict, education is nothing less than a lifeline. It provides protection and a sense of normality amidst the chaos, and gives them the resources they need to heal and thrive again,'' said Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait, the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises within the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
. ''In the spirit of responsibility sharing enshrined in the Global Compact on Refugees, I call on international donors to step up their support. Needs are fast outpacing the response. Additional resources are urgently required to ensure that refugee and host community children in Egypt and other refugee receiving countries in the region can attend school and continue learning. The future of the entire region is at stake,'' she said.

''Forcibly displaced children should not be denied their fundamental right to pursue their education, their flight from conflict can no longer be an impediment to their rights. UNHCR together with ECW and UNICEF continue to ensure that children's education, and therefore their future, are safeguarded,'' said Dr. Hanan Hamdan, UNHCR Representative to the Government of Egypt and to the League of Arab States. ''To this end, it is crucial to further support Egypt as a host country. It has shown remarkable resilience and generosity, but the increasing number of displaced individuals requires enhanced international assistance. By strengthening Egypt's capacity to support refugees, we can ensure that more children have access to education and eventually a brighter future,'' she added.

#1  I'd love to have the capability to monitor the Forty Day Road from Darfur in the Sudan across the desert and thence to Aswan in Egypt. 748,000 seems a bit much from that region, but it is perhaps the case that the Nile Arabs also are just fed-up with a failed state and want out, no matter what.

ISIS claims responsibility for German festival attack, Syrian knifeman turns himself in
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
Follow up to the attack yesterday.
[Regnum] The Islamic State (IS, a terrorist organization banned in Russia) group has claimed responsibility for a knife attack at a festival in the city of Solingen (North Rhine-Westphalia) in western Germany. Its representatives reported this on social media.

The terrorists' statement is quoted by Reuters. They claim that they carried out the attack "in retaliation" for Muslims in Palestine and around the world.

However, the group's representatives did not provide any evidence to support their claims. Journalists noted that it remained unclear how close the connection between ISIS and whoever carried out the attack in Solingen was.

As reported by the Regnum news agency, on the evening of August 23 in Solingen an unknown person attacked passers-by with a knife. The attacker struck indiscriminately and then fled the scene. As a result, at least three people died and eight more were injured.

Witnesses said the suspect had "Arabic features." Police began searching for the attacker.

As part of the investigation into this case, the police detained a 15-year-old teenager. According to preliminary information, he was not the direct perpetrator of the attack. The young man was accused of failing to report a crime being prepared.

Approximately 200 meters from the scene of the attack, law enforcement officers found a knife that could have been used by the criminal who committed the attack.

Police storm refugee centre in Solingen, Germany, after terrorist attack
A search was conducted in a refugee center by police officers from the special operations command after a terrorist attack and the death of three people in the German city of Solingen. This was reported on August 24 by the Bild newspaper.

The refugee shelter is located 300 meters from the place where the attacker attacked people with a knife. The murder weapon - a knife with which the attacker killed three people - was found 150 meters from the shelter.

A dog handler with a dog was brought in to search for the criminal, and the dog led investigators from the place where the knife was found to a refugee shelter on Wupperstrasse. A special police unit surrounded the building and stormed it. The shelter is currently being searched and the people living there are being questioned.

Earlier, Regnum news agency reported that law enforcement officers detained a 15-year-old teenager after a man attacked festival guests with a knife in the city of Solingen. According to preliminary data, the teenager was not the direct perpetrator of the attack; he was accused of failing to report the planned crimes.

Investigators are still trying to determine the perpetrator's motives. Senior prosecutor Markus Kaspers said the attack could have been an act of terrorism.

On the evening of August 23, a man armed with a knife attacked people at the city festival "Diversity Festival", dedicated to the 650th anniversary of Solingen. As a result, at least three people died. The police specified that the victims were a 67-year-old and a 56-year-old man, as well as a 56-year-old woman. In addition, at least eight people were injured. According to the police, five of them were seriously injured.

The criminal fled the scene. German police are still searching for him. Deputy head of the German police union Michael Mertens emphasized that there is no specific information about the attacker yet, and descriptions of his personality are contradictory.

SUSPECT TURNED HIMSELF IN, LOCAL MINISTRY SAYS
The man suspected of the stabbing in Solingen turned himself in to the police, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia told the news agency DPA.

According to the German daily Bild, the man, still covered in blood, approached the officers shortly after 11 p.m. (2100 GMT) and said: "I'm the one you're looking for..."

He had reportedly been hiding in a backyard since the crime.

German news magazine Spiegel reported that the suspect is a 26-year-old Syrian, who came to Germany in 2022 and applied for asylum in Bielefeld.

Because he came from a country in civil war, he was allowed to stay in Germany.

SOLINGEN STABBING SUSPECT DETAINED, LOCAL MINISTER SAYS
Police have arrested a main suspect following the knife attack in Solingen, Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul told German TV.

The minister spoke of a "real suspect" who police had been looking for all day, after a third person had been arrested in connection with the incident.

"They were very probably, still cautiously speaking, not the ones we really suspected," said Reul with regard to the two previous arrests.

"I myself am a bit relieved at the moment," the minister added. "I can only tell you that it is now more than a hunch. Not only did we have a lead on this person, but we've also found pieces of evidence."

The arrested suspect's clothes were dirty and covered in blood, the German news magazine Der Spiegel quoted security sources as saying.
And from the Times of Israel:
Officials earlier said a 15-year-old boy was arrested early Saturday on suspicion he knew about the planned attack and failed to inform authorities, but he was not the attacker. Two female witnesses told police they overheard the boy and an unknown person before the attack speaking about intentions that corresponded to the bloodshed, officials said.
Breitbart has a name:
At around 11 pm local time on Saturday, over 24 hours after the attack in Solingen, 26-year-old “Issa al H.” surrendered to police.

According to German tabloid Bild, he came up to a patrol car and said: “I am the one you are looking for.” He reportedly hid in a backyard to evade detection while the day-long police manhunt was underway.

During the attack, which took place in the city centre of Solingen at a “festival of diversity” as the city celebrated its 650th anniversary, three people were stabbed to death and six others were wounded, including four with life-threatening wounds.

The attacker was said to have specifically targeted his victim’s necks, leading to speculation that it was terror-related.

Der Spiegel reports that Issa al H. was born in Syria, in the city of Deir al-Zor, before coming to Germany in 2022 as an asylum seeker. Last year, he was granted protection, allowing him to remain in the country as a result of the civil war in his homeland.

He was reportedly not known to security authorities as an Islamic extremist, however, he is said to be a Sunni Muslim.

It was claimed that, according to witness statements gathered by police, the attacker had shouted out the Jihadi war cry “Allahu Akbar” as he carried out the attack on the diversity festival.
Update from Deutsche Welle at 12:15 p,m. ET:
German prosecutors on Sunday released the name of the 26-year-old Syrian man suspected of a multiple stabbing attack in the western city of Solingen that killed three people and injured eight others.

Issa Al H., who was identified without his family name due to German privacy laws, was flown by helicopter to the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe for his first hearing.

Al H. was remanded in custody on suspicion of murder and membership of the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) group, among other charges, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office said.

Earlier Sunday, police said the suspect had turned himself in and admitted responsibility for the attack. German news magazine Spiegel reported that the suspect came to Germany in 2022 as a refugee and applied for asylum in the city of Bielefeld.

According to Germany's dpa news agency, the man's asylum claim was denied and he was to have been deported last year.
There’s the motivation for his Sudden Jihad Syndrome: punish the dhimmis for daring to refuse to pay their jizya.
The agency cited no sources for its information.

Al H. came from a home for refugees in Solingen that was searched on Saturday, according to Herbert Reul, the interior minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where Solingen is situated.

#2  "the attacker had shouted out the Jihadi war cry “Allahu Akbar” as he carried out the attack on the diversity festival."

Prediction:

Within the next two weeks the government will hold a vigil ceremony on location where an Erdogan affiliated (and thus MB/Hamas affiliated) Imam will give a sermon that will include the above mentioned "war cry."

Because "Islam is peace".

Investigative Committee has completed its investigation into the assassination attempt on RT editor-in-chief Simonyan
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The Investigative Committee has completed the preliminary investigation into the assassination attempt on Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Rossiya Segodnya media group and the RT TV channel, and TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak. This was reported on August 24 by Dmitry Dzhulai, a lawyer for one of the defendants in the case.

"The defendants are familiarizing themselves with the case materials. The volume is quite large," the human rights activist said in a conversation with TASS.

He did not provide any other details.

Dzhulai is defending Mikhail Baryshnikov, whom investigators believe to be one of the organizers of the crime. Seven other people are also involved in the case. They are in custody. Some of the accused were minors at the time of the crime.

As reported by the Regnum news agency, earlier on August 24 it became known from the case materials that a confrontation was held with the person accused of preparing the assassination attempts on Simonyan and Sobchak.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) prevented an assassination attempt on Simonyan and Sobchak in July 2023. The agency's employees, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Investigative Committee, detained neo-Nazis from the "Paragraph 88" group in Moscow and the Ryazan region. It was established that they prepared for the assassinations on the instructions and under the guidance of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). The accused confirmed this during interrogation. For each murder, they were promised a reward of 1.5 million rubles.

The group was engaged in attacks on people of "non-Slavic appearance." Then, one of its members, Mikhail Balashov, was contacted by a representative of the SBU and offered to set fire to relay cabinets on Russian territory, and later to commit a contract killing of Simonyan and Sobchak.

On July 3 of this year, three new defendants appeared in the criminal case on the preparation of an assassination attempt on the RT editor-in-chief and TV presenter, including an eighth-grade student. Three young people - a communications college student, an installer, and a schoolboy - were detained in connection with the hooliganism case on May 7. They were given a preventive measure in the form of a ban on certain actions. Investigators believe that the detainees are connected with the neo-Nazi group "Paragraph 88".

HHS Launches Vaccine Campaign
[Epoch Times] In an announcement on Aug. 19, the federal health agency stated that it is trying to "increase awareness of vaccines" for influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus, more commonly known as RSV.

"Respiratory illness from flu, COVID-19, and RSV viruses usually surge during colder weather and can cause severe disease, hospitalization, and even death," HHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Jeffery Nesbit said in a statement.

While the agency did not provide specific data on the vaccines, Nesbit noted that HHS’s goal for the coming months is to "increase confidence in vaccines that play an important role in preventing severe illness from these viruses and to provide the information that the American people need to make the decision to get vaccinated this fall and winter."
Increase confidence? By censoring the continuing reports of problems?
The campaign, titled "Risk Less. Do More," will use paid advertising and "media coverage" on television, social media, radio, print, and other platforms, it stated. The federal agency will also work with local and state health agencies and organizations "to ensure all audiences have access to information from sources they trust," according to the statement.
Trust the government's ad campaign? Try talking to your doctor. Mine are not pushing the new shots. They did recommend a shot for Hepatitis A and Hep B.
In recent months, COVID-19 cases have seen an uptick, with wastewater data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing cases at "very high" levels in 32 states. However, despite the recent rise, deaths from COVID-19 remain near all-time lows in recent months, according to the CDC’s historical data.
I suppose wastewater data included people who were unaware they had COVID.
The vaccine campaign also comes as mRNA vaccine makers Pfizer and BioNTech stated last week that their combined flu and COVID-19 vaccine faltered in a late-stage trial, finding the combination shot failed to meet one of the study’s two main goals and that they are evaluating the next steps.

Why the Ukrainian Armed Forces' fortifications in the Krasnoarmeysk direction did not work
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

[ColonelCassad] Ukrainian Armed Forces' Fortifications in the Pokrovsk Direction: How the Operational Crisis Is Neutralizing the Advantages of Ukrainian Armed Forces' Defensive Lines

The rapid advance of Russian troops in the Pokrovsk direction often encounters fierce resistance from the enemy, who has set up hundreds of kilometers of fortifications in the occupied part of the DPR.

Most of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' fortifications are platoon and company strongholds with a developed fire control system and camouflage, which turns each assault on such a fortification into a separate operation.

Sometimes Russian units encounter truly monstrous fortifications in size, which play the role of key defense nodes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A

striking example of this is a large stronghold to the east of Zhelanny Pervye, taken by the Russian Armed Forces during fighting in this area in July. This defensive node was supposedly started to be built by the enemy shortly before the Ukrainian Armed Forces retreated from Avdiivka, and was supposed to become an impassable obstacle for Russian units due to its location and size.

A large system of trenches and equipped firing points, located in an "open field" and covered by UAVs and artillery, is really capable of stopping the advance of even large military units for a long time in conditions of air superiority of various types of drones.

Even smaller fortifications, with proper defense and established communication between units, are capable of holding back advances on entire sections of the front for years - Nevelskoye, located to the south, the battle for which lasted more than a year, is proof of this.

Nevertheless, a large stronghold to the east of Novoselovka Pervaya was successfully captured by Russian troops in less than a week of combat. In the conditions of an operational crisis and the inability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces command to competently build interaction between units, this defense node turned into a huge target for Russian aviation and drones.

An additional factor was the fact that assault units of the Russian Armed Forces attacked the enemy stronghold from the northeast, leveling many of the advantages of the fortification, erected with the aim of holding back the advance of Russian troops from the east.

Coordinates: 48.215605, 37.475699

Another large stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was encountered by Russian units to the southwest of Timofeevka. The enemy fortifications were erected in the area of the S-05-09-07 highway and covered the crossing over the Kazeny Torets, located in the village. The enemy defensive node was a system of trenches and firing points and, apparently, was adapted for all-round defense.

In the conditions of a stable front, such a line could have stopped the advance of Russian troops to Timofeevka and Lisichny and would have required significant forces to capture it. However, without established communication between units and cover from UAVs, the stronghold was under threat of encirclement and was captured by the Russian Armed Forces within a few days.

Coordinates: 48.276491, 37.479241

During the special operation, we have repeatedly witnessed how even smaller defensive lines held back the advance of advancing troops in one or another section of the front for a long time.

The enemy fortifications in the Kupyansk-Svatovsky, Limansky and Seversky directions have been causing significant problems for the Russian Armed Forces for over a year now due to the geographical features of the terrain and the positional nature of the fighting.

However, many of the advantages of such fortifications are lost in the conditions of an operational crisis, similar to what is happening with the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Pokrovsky direction. Even the most powerful enemy defensive positions, in the absence of sufficient infantry and support assets to hold them, turn into an easy target for Russian attack aircraft.

A separate problem for Ukrainian formations is the low morale and psychological state of units, regularly subjected to attacks by Russian Aerospace Forces and artillery and forced to hold unfavorable positions.

Africa North
Egypt's faltering economy – a local crisis; an opportunity for Israel
[Ynet] Egypt, with its steadily growing population of some 113 million people (estimated to reach 160 million by 2050), is currently in the throes of a deep economic crisis, manifesting in a high inflation rate — approximately 34% as of 2023; a steep poverty rate at 29.7% as of 2019; a devaluation of the Egyptian Lira and a staggering debt to the tune of $165 billion.

...One of the main threats to Egypt’s economy is the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on one of the Nile River’s sources. This project might cut off part of Egypt’s water supply, floating concerns of already soaring unemployment rates climbing even higher, as some 20% of the country’s population makes its living in agriculture.

This also might deliver a blow to Egypt’s ability to produce food and supply electricity for its population, sinking the country’s GDP to a debilitating low. In turn, Egypt will find itself relying heavily on foreign imports, increasing its already staggering debt and dragging it into a whirlpool of financial crisis.

If that were not enough, Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has been fostering various grandiose projects that are costing the Egyptian tax-payer billions of dollars. He is expected to continue pouring funds into these initiatives over the next few years, which will demand additional economic aid that will dig the economy into even deeper debt.

One such undertaking is the construction of the New Nile Delta project, aiming to enhance the country’s agricultural capacity to service its rapidly growing population. Egypt hopes that upon the conclusion of the Nile Delta expansion, it will be able to independently produce vaster quantities of food at lower costs, while at the same time creating jobs for millions of citizens.

Another such project is The New Administrative City — a new state-of-the-art capital located between its current capital of Cairo to Suez. The new city is expected to sit on an area of some 725 square kilometers (280 square miles) and become home to millions of people. The estimated cost of this project is approximately $58 billion. An additional 14 cities are currently under construction across the country. Despite the fact that large swaths of the new city have already been completed, they remain unpopulated for the time being, and it is estimated that by the end of 2024, some 10,000 families will have relocated to the city.

At the same time, El-Sisi is pushing the construction of a new coastal city on an area of 170 square kilometers (66 square miles), which is planned to include new residential buildings, hotels, tourist attractions, hospitals, universities and more. This project aims to increase the country’s inflow of tourism, investments and foreign currency as a means with which to boost its economy. For this project, Egypt had signed in 2024 a financing agreement with the UAE to the tune of $35 billion. Estimates in Egypt are that total investments in this endeavor will amount to at least $150 billion.
In short, a typical Arab dictator with delusions of divinity.
Another problem for the Egyptian economy is its debt crunch, wherein the country’s foreign debt now exceeds $165 billion. In the 23-24 fiscal year, approximately 56% of the budget costs were allocated to covering past loans and interest, and to date, about 49% of the government’s revenues come from new loans. This creates a state of affairs in which Egypt is taking out gargantuan new loans to repay old debt and is in effect digging itself deeper into its financial hole.

In conclusion, in the current state of affairs, Egypt is entrenched in a near-crippling economic crisis that is not expected to end in the next several years. Additionally, since the start of the Gaza war, Egypt has been adopting actions and rhetoric that are contradictory to Israel’s interest. In response, Israel can — and must — bring into play the leverages it possesses in the form of control over the gas tap, its relations with the US and its diplomatic ties with Ethiopia, in order to advance Israel’s interest in the current armed conflict, i.e. the seizure of Rafah, the elimination of Hamas, the return of the Israeli hostages and the control over the Philadelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border, and ensure Egypt’s support of these interest, while receiving aid from Israel.
Israel should consider its long term interests. Deniably assist the collapse of Egyptian central government and use the troubles to retake Sinai (third time ice-cream) and to clean out Gaza.

Ukrainian perspective: Operation in Kursk region
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 21:43 The Kursk Region Operational Headquarters, within the framework of the "CTO regime" in effect in the region, has limited activity in and around the Kurchatov Reservoir. A decision has been made to ban cultural, sports and other events, as well as fishing, the use of small boats, jet skis and other watercraft, said the head of the region, Alexey Smirnov. In addition, according to him, the operation of entertainment venues and the holding of mass events within the coastal zone have been temporarily banned.

17:17 The Ukrainian army's operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation is complicated, but it is going according to plan and is bearing fruit, Zelensky said: "The operation is complicated. What is important is that it is going according to our plan. There are important results of this operation. I can't talk about everything... First of all, the exchange fund, it is being replenished, this is positive. Secondly, this is the halt of the Russian operation in the north, a preemptive strike. Our operation has accomplished this task."

In addition, according to the president, one of the goals of the operation was to prevent the Russians from advancing on the Sumy region: "We prevented the encirclement of part of the Sumy region and the desire to occupy Sumy. Someone said that we are playing this as a card for dialogue. What dialogue? We are not playing any cards." The head of state also expressed confidence that all the goals set by Ukraine will be achieved, and added that there are "more of these goals than I have named publicly."

In addition, Zelensky emphasized that the operation in the Kursk region showed the world who Putin is, because for him, the occupation of Ukrainian territory is more important than protecting his own population.

09:41 The Defense Forces continue to conduct an operation in the Kursk direction, the General Staff reported, without providing details.

The US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports, citing geolocation footage, that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are advancing in the Sudzha area of the Kursk region. Thus, Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the southern part of Russkaya Konopelka (east of Sudzha), as well as north of Martynovka (northeast of Sudzha) along the R-200 Sudzha-Sukhodolovka highway. Some Russian bloggers claimed that Ukrainian troops also advanced north of Martynovka (northeast of Sudzha).

The Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState also reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had success east of Sudzha.

05:54 The US has several reasons for not allowing Ukraine to strike its long-range weapons at Russian territory. One of them is the hope of resetting its relations with Moscow in the future, Politico writes, citing sources. According to the White House and the Pentagon, Ukraine has the potential to win without this, the source noted.

One White House official also said that the use of Western long-range missiles against Russia may not be as effective as it seems. In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have a limited supply of such missiles, and the ones they have may not reach critical Russian targets that have already been removed from their range.

00:15 The Pentagon announced the contents of the new $125 million US military aid package:

  • counter-unmanned aircraft systems (c-UAS) equipment and munitions;

  • ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);

  • artillery ammunition of 155 mm and 105 mm caliber;

  • tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided (TOW) missiles;

  • Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems;

  • High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV);

  • small arms ammunition;

  • medical equipment;

  • sapper equipment and ammunition;

  • spare parts, auxiliary equipment, services, training, transport.

Russia can fly planes out of range of HIMAR but logistic facilities, ammo depots and fuel depots are not so easy to move.

The Price of an Adventure. How Much Equipment Did the Ukrainians Lose During the Invasion of Kursk Oblast
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Sergey Adamov

[REGNUM] Over the past months, Ukrainian troops have suffered repeated defeats, retreating along the entire front line in Donbas. In conditions when reinforcements were needed on the front line, the Ukrainian Armed Forces command decided to raid into Russian territory.

The breakthrough of the Ukrainian Armed Forces into the Kursk region occurred on the morning of August 6. To do this, the leadership of the Ukrainian army deployed units from several directions, primarily mobile ones.

Based on the photos and videos taken by the enemy, it can be concluded that Kyiv initially relied on the speed of breakthrough and maneuver, so the invasion contingent included units armed with wheeled armored vehicles of various models. First of all, these are the 80th and 82nd airborne assault brigades, equipped with American M1126 Stryker armored personnel carriers.

Earlier, Regnum News Agency repeatedly drew attention to the fact that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are not using some of the armored vehicles supplied by NATO countries in Donbass, holding them in the rear for a new offensive. This allowed them to concentrate a large number of American armored vehicles and, for the first time in the entire military action, use them simultaneously.

Along with the American armored personnel carriers, other wheeled vehicles at the disposal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were also thrown into the breach: French VAB armored personnel carriers, Ukrainian Kazak armored vehicles, Turkish Otokar Cobra, Roschel, Cougar and other models.

"TURNED FROM HUNTERS TO PREY"
This entire "wheeled zoo" was formed to advance along the roads using the "as soon as possible" and "no matter the losses" tactics, achieving a shock effect. The initial plan of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was to provoke maximum confusion, panic and provoke a humanitarian and political crisis. This was stated in a commentary to the Regnum news agency by military expert, retired colonel Anatoliy Matviychuk.

"In essence, we are witnessing the second stage of the conflict. The preconditions for panic are being created, which are accompanied by rumors about "the center will not help", the exodus of refugees, and so on. In fact, "collective democratic fascism", as I call it, was betting on undermining statehood through a lightning operation," the expert noted.

The "forward-forward" tactics provided the Ukrainian Armed Forces with short-term success in the early stages of the operation. However, they also led to problems for the attackers.

The forested terrain in the Kursk region does not allow the equipment to maneuver off-road, which tied the Ukrainian Armed Forces to roads. As a result, the units that broke away from the bridgehead quickly turned from hunters into prey. The result is that dozens of armored vehicles were destroyed in an ambush or as a result of drone strikes.

The analytical portal Lostarmour, which analyzes losses during modern military conflicts based on open source data, reports that more than thirty light armored vehicles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were burned during battles in the Kursk region. These statistics include only those losses that were recorded in photos and videos.

Several Stryker armored personnel carriers were also destroyed, including two vehicles in the M1126 ECV combat engineer modification. In total, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost up to 20 Stryker vehicles out of the hundred supplied by the United States. And this does not include vehicles that failed for technical reasons.

The day before, the American publication Military Watch Magazine reported that Ukrainian troops had already lost 20 Abrams tanks out of 31 delivered. These are not “critical” but “catastrophic” losses.

OFFENSIVE WITHOUT TANKS
Another distinctive feature of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' raid into the Kursk region was the almost complete refusal to use heavy armored vehicles. Exactly one year ago, during the "counteroffensive" in the Zaporizhzhya direction, Ukrainian troops acted exactly the opposite, throwing tanks and heavy armored vehicles into battle in large numbers on a small section of the front.

In the Kursk region, the Ukrainian Armed Forces offensive was supported by British Challenger tanks assigned to one of the airborne units. The vehicles, which the Ukrainian army received in the amount of 30 units, did not show their best side and were not used in combat for more than six months. However, now Kyiv has decided to use them as well - at least one tank of this model was destroyed.

The lack of armored support means that the Ukrainian Armed Forces, faced with a well-built defense, are forced to halt their offensive. However, the tanks that are available are likely to be used in Donbass and on other fronts.

Overall, the problems that have arisen for the Ukrainian Armed Forces raise the question: was it worth starting such an adventure?

"The goals of this campaign were defined in the US. Or, if you like, in NATO command. The task is to destroy the statehood of Russia. It did not work out in a direct way, Ukraine is suffering losses on all fronts - from Donetsk to Kherson. So no matter how much Kiev loses there, it will not matter to those who ordered it," notes Anatoly Matviychuk.

But will the Ukrainian army itself be able to handle such an adventure, which is essentially being deprived of its last reserves and most combat-ready units? After all, according to statistics, the total number of armored vehicles of all types lost by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region exceeded 70 units. Although in reality we may be talking about hundreds of armored vehicles that have not yet been captured on camera.

IRREPLACEABLE LOSSES OF ARTILLERY
An interesting detail: if Kyiv was stingy with heavy armored vehicles for participation in the invasion of the Kursk region, then it was completely stingy with fire support and air support.

Large-caliber 203mm 2S7 Pion guns, which have not appeared at the front for many months, were spotted in the border zone. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are also firing from both Soviet and American multiple launch rocket systems across the state border, primarily from HIMARS rocket systems.

Kyiv treasures these weapons, using them on a hit-and-run basis. Every disabled HIMARS is a major success for Russian forces.

According to Lostarmour, at least three vehicles have been disabled since the start of the SVO. And in three weeks of operations in the Kursk region, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost the same number.

The rocket systems are usually located in the Sumy region and are camouflaged in forests immediately after the strike. However, thanks to the activity of Russian drones, the vehicles were tracked down and hit by Iskander OTRK strikes.

The US may adjust aid to Ukraine due to attacks on the Kursk region
In addition to the three lost HIMARS in the Kursk region, in the Kherson direction the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost an M270 rocket system - a HIMARS variant on a tracked platform, with two launchers for six missiles.

For Kyiv, these are extremely painful losses, since such vehicles are supplied individually and extremely rarely. It is practically impossible to replenish them, and the loss of MLRS leaves an entire section of the front without fire cover.

"They say that what happened is Zelensky's mistake, but there is no mistake here. Ukrainian troops are suffering losses, and they failed to fulfill their tasks. Rather the opposite - the greater the pressure, the more we unite. So all the consequences of this adventure will fall on the figurehead chairman Zelensky - yes. But he is doing what he was ordered to do," Anatoly Matviychuk is convinced.

He predicts that Kyiv will not limit itself to an adventure in the Kursk region, admitting that the Ukrainian Armed Forces may try to attack Transnistria - also on orders from outside.

Ultimately, the dispersal of Ukrainian military reserves could lead to the collapse of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' defense in other areas. But this does not prevent the West from ordering new military "actions" from Kyiv.

Iran will seek to ''manage tensions'' with US: FM Abbas Araqchi
[GEOTV] Iran's new government will seek to "manage tensions" with its arch-enemy the United States to help reduce pressure and neutralise crippling sanctions, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said.
That’s nice. How well do you think that’ll work if Donald Trump is elected?
"What we have to do is manage the tensions and hostilities" between Tehran and Washington, he said in an interview late Friday on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
and the United States have had no diplomatic relations since 1980, the year after the Islamic revolution that toppled its Western-backed Shah Mohammed Reza.

A landmark 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers granted Iran sanctions relief in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.

But the deal quickly collapsed and tensions reignited following the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the accord in 2018.

"In foreign policy, we have a duty to reduce as much as possible the cost of this hostility and reduce its pressure on the nation," said Araqchi, who was one of the key negotiators of the 2015 agreement.

He added that Iran's foreign policy will prioritise "neighbouring countries" as well as African countries, along with China and Russia, among others.

Araqchi criticised European countries for having "adopted hostile policies" towards Iran in recent years.

He said they would only "become a priority" when they "abandon their wrong and hostile policies".

Libyan Army Frees 1,000 Migrants in Major Anti-Trafficking Operation
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

On Saturday, the Libyan National Army (LNA)
…that’s Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar’s outfit in East Libya…
successfully managed to liberate over 1,000 migrants colonists, including women and kiddies, from a human trafficking ring near the town of al-Shuwayrif.

This operation is a crucial step in Libya’s ongoing battle against organized crime and efforts to stabilize the country’s volatile borders.

The LNA’s Tariq bin Ziyad Brigade carried out the raid that led to the liberation of the migrants colonists. According to Colonel Khalifa al-Abidi, Director of the Media Office for the LNA, most of the rescued migrants colonists were of African origin, held in a large human trafficking compound in al-Shuwayrif, strategically located between Misrata and Sebha.

In addition to freeing the migrants colonists, the operation also resulted in the arrest of the gang responsible for these illegal activities. "The rescued individuals have been relocated to a safe area where they are receiving necessary care, including shelter and medical attention," al-Abidi confirmed, underscoring the humanitarian success of the mission.

During the raid, the LNA also uncovered significant quantities of narcotics, indicating the gang’s involvement in broader criminal activities. This successful operation is part of the LNA’s broader strategy to dismantle organized crime networks operating within Libya, a country that has become a major transit point for migrants colonists attempting to reach Europe.

This latest success comes as the LNA intensifies its efforts to secure southern Libya, a region increasingly destabilized by conflicts in neighboring countries like Mali, Niger, and Chad. Earlier this month, LNA front man Major General Ahmed al-Mismari confirmed the deployment of additional troops to reinforce border security and support military operations in the southwest.

Al-Mismari emphasized that these reinforcements are aimed at two key objectives: securing Libya’s borders against illegal immigration and stabilizing the region, which faces increased threats from the spillover of conflicts in neighboring states. These regional challenges have been compounded by the activities of criminal networks exploiting Libya’s ongoing instability.

#2  I love Fred’s auto-translate bit about Khalifa Haftar:

...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all. Actually, he is, but slowly...

Four migrants indicted in violent Denver jewelry heist
[NYPOST] Four Venezuela

...a country in Central America that sits on an enormous pool of oil. Formerly the most prospereous country in the region, it became infested with Commies sniffing almost unlimited wealth. It turned out the wealth wasn't unlimited, the economy collapsed under the clownish Hugo Chavez, the murder rate exceeded places like Honduras and El Salvador. A significant proportion of the populace refugeed to Colombia and points south...

n migrants colonists believed to have links to the notorious prison gang Tren de Aragua were indicted Wednesday in the violent mostly peaceful armed robbery of a Denver jewelry store — including two migrants colonists who have previously been arrested in other states, The Post can reveal.

Three of the alleged gangbangers — Oswaldo Lozada-Solis, 23, Jesus Daniel Lara Del Toro, 20, and Jean Franco Torres-Roman, 21 — were charged with armed robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, the US Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado announced Wednesday.

The fourth migrant, Edwuimar Nazareth Colina-Romero, 18, was charged with transporting stolen goods and possession of stolen goods.

The charges stem from a June 25 robbery in which two female staffers at Joyeria El Ruby Jewelry Store were pistol-whipped and threatened with death.

Ohio secretary of state finds 597 noncitizens registered to vote, 138 have already voted
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced on Wednesday that he has referred evidence of nearly 600 noncitizen voters in the state to Attorney General Dave Yost’s office for possible prosecution, with some of those voters already casting ballots in the state.

"I’m duty-bound to make sure people who haven’t yet earned citizenship in this country do not vote in our elections," LaRose said in a blurb. "We’ve so far identified 597 individuals who’ve registered to vote in Ohio despite not being citizens of the United States, as our state constitution requires."

"The evidence includes 138 individuals who appear to have cast a ballot in an Ohio election during the time state and federal records show they lacked citizenship status. The law requires me to refer these individuals to the attorney general, and that’s what we’re doing today."

LaRose launched an audit of Ohio’s voter registration database earlier in 2024, which resulted in the removal of 15,995 registrations that were confirmed to be inactive or abandoned for a period of at least four consecutive years.

LaRose also undertook the "most extensive citizenship verification audit ever conducted by the Ohio Secretary of State’s office" which included cross-checking with records provided by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Homeland Security’s federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database, federal jury pool data, and other resources.

The investigation into the citizenship status of voters remains ongoing, LaRose’s office said, and additional removals may occur before the election in November. Under state law, the secretary of state is allowed to "investigate the administration of election laws, frauds, and irregularities in elections in any county, and report violations of election laws to the attorney general or prosecuting attorney, or both, for prosecution."

This comes as other states, including Alabama and Texas, have also found noncitizens on their voter rolls and Republicans have been pushing to secure the 2024 election amid record numbers of illegal immigration in the US.

Odessa Mayor Refuses to Demolish Pushkin Monument for Tourists
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The monument to the great Russian poet Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, located near the Odessa city administration, will not be demolished because it is a cultural heritage. This was announced on August 23 by the city mayor Gennady Trukhanov.

Odessa Mayor Refuses to Demolish Pushkin Monument for Tourists
"Today, various European delegations and tourists come here, and they know who Pushkin is. They talk about how he lived and worked here in Odessa, and also about how he was exiled here," he said in an interview with the publication "Ukrainian Truth."

Trukhanov clarified that the Pushkin monument is in the motivation dossier at UNESCO, recalling that it was once erected by city residents at their own expense.

As reported by the Regnum news agency, in early July the mayor of Odessa spoke in favor of keeping the monuments associated with Russia in their places. He noted that they are all part of the history and cultural heritage of the city.

In August 2023, Trukhanov stated that the decision on the future of the Pushkin monument in the center of Odessa should be made by the city's residents, many of whom respect the poet. The mayor noted that the monument was erected at the expense of the community, and that it was erected by the Odessans themselves, not the authorities. Trukhanov also added then that he was against the demolition of the monument.

English Parliament in 1940 went berserk over the failure of the plan to strike the USSR
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Members of the British Parliament went wild in March 1940 when London's plans to strike the USSR were thwarted, according to declassified documents from the Russian Foreign Policy Archives published by the Presidential Library.
The secret Hitler-Stalin non-aggression pact was signed 23 August 1939. They agreed to split Poland, and the Soviet Union would take Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Bessarabia. A week later Nazi Germany invaded Poland from one side, and a few weeks after that the Soviets came in on the other; at the end of November the Soviets invaded Finland … the Allies figured out what had happened.
The war between the USSR and Finland ended on March 12, 1940. The parties signed a peace treaty. A few days later, the Soviet ambassador to England, Ivan Maisky, reported to the People's Commissariat of Foreign Affairs about the mood in the British parliament.

"I have rarely seen parliament in such a state of irritation and excitement. More than ever, it became clear how timely the peace had been concluded," follows from a coded telegram from the USSR Ambassador to England Ivan Maisky on March 14, 1940.

He reported that the parliamentary "masses" were in a frenzy and greeted with stormy approval every anti-Soviet attack heard in the British Parliament. According to him, there was a great danger of open intervention by England and France on the side of Finland.

As reported on August 24 by the Regnum news agency, the Presidential Library declassified archives on Britain and France's plans to start a war with the USSR in 1940. According to Soviet intelligence, in early 1940, Britain and France decided to start a war against the Soviet Union. They planned to strike from Finland and the Caucasus, and to create a "national Russian government."

Thus, Britain and France planned to transfer Canadian troops to Finland to capture the port of Petsamo, which they intended to use as a military base against Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. The main task was to capture Leningrad.

Portland middle school teacher charged for luring a minor for sex
[POSTMILLENNIAL] A Portland Public Schools (PPS) teacher has been arrested on child sex crime charges. Craig W. Douglas-Meyers, 38, of Portland, a math teacher at Hosford Middle School, has been accused of making plans to meet up with a detective posing as a 13-year-old child for sex.

Douglas-Meyers has been charged with one felony count of luring a minor, according to a blurb from the Portland Police Bureau.

Police said a detective with the Yuba City (Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,) Police Department contacted the Portland Police Bureau's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit regarding an undercover chat operation on July 18. During the operation, the detective posed as a 13-year-old child and began communicating with Douglas-Meyers. The conversations were "sexual in nature and involved discussions on how to meet," according to police documents. Following a weekslong investigation, Douglas-Meyers was arrested and taken into custody around 7am on Friday, Aug. 23.

"PPB's ICAC Unit, with assistance from PPB's Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), HSI agents in Portland, and the Milwaukie Police Department's Electronic Storage Device Detection K-9, served a search warrant at Douglas-Meyers' home in Northeast Portland. Douglas-Meyers was arrested and ultimately transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center," the PPB said.

Detectives said that due to Douglas-Meyers' "brazen conversations with who he thought was a child, and his employment as a teacher at Hosford Middle School in Southeast Portland, detectives fear there could be additional children with who he has had inappropriate contact."
