[YNet] - Struggling to contain a second wave of the coronavirus, Israel's ministerial committee on handling the pandemic on Sunday decided to reinstate some of the earlier restrictions that had been lifted, in an attempt to slow the spread of the pathogen.
Ministers decided to once again restrict the number of people allowed to travel in a car to three, including the driver; extend a ban on more than 10 people at any indoor gatherings, including restaurants and synagogues, while outdoor meetings will be limited to no more than 20 people at a time.
Closures will also be reimposed on all nightclubs, bars, event halls, cultural venues, water parks and amusement parks.
Existing restrictions on public events, including conventions, parties, festivals and organized trips, will be extended until further notice.
...Regional health officials will also be empowered to close down any businesses found in violation of the directives.
Ministers also decided to task local municipalities with the responsibility of erecting signs in public areas reminding residents of social distancing regulations and the requirement to wear masks.
Israel’s coronavirus death toll edges near 600 while the number of patients in need of ventilators had seen a 25% increase in the past nine days.
Since the first coronavirus case in February, the country's infection tally stands at 82,515.

"Young was a life-long Republican. In 1952, she appeared in radio, print, and magazine ads in support of Dwight D. Eisenhower in his campaign for US president. She attended his inauguration in 1953 along with Anita Louise, Louella Parsons, Jane Russell, Dick Powell, June Allyson, and Lou Costello, among others. She was a vocal supporter of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan in their presidential campaigns in 1968 and 1980, respectively. Young was also an active member of the Hollywood Republican Committee, with her close friends Irene Dunne, Ginger Rogers, William Holden, George Murphy, Fred Astaire, and John Wayne." Wiki
This would be a rare anomaly or never happen today in Hollywood.

Dad didn't do starstruck. Gave the impression of never having given a hoot in hell for Hollywood. If he'd ever seen a movie as a kid, or if, overseas, he'd bothered to cross the street to see a Loy or Lombard or Hepburn or Monroe, you wouldn't hear about it from him. But every now and then -- about once a decade -- he'd light up at passing mention of starlet past, and for that fleeting moment it was like he was remembering the Virgin Mary showing up halfway through a hot afternoon with iced tea and a slice of pie. And sugar for the mule. Irene Dunne. Loretta Young. God bless 'em

[NationalReview] D.C. Circuit judges seem disturbed by the degree to which Judge Emmet Sullivan has exhibited bias in Flynn’s case.
... whatever one may have thought about the gravity of Sullivan's irregular behavior back in May, he has now clearly crossed the Rubicon. It is incumbent on him to recuse himself. If he can't bring himself to do that ‐ a failure that would further demonstrate a lack of judicial detachment ‐ the D.C. Circuit should disqualify him. Either way, the case should be reassigned to a new judge, who should promptly grant the Justice Department's motion to dismiss.
#2
Every aspect of this has dragged out the persecution of Flynn and the horrific legal casts that have destroyed him (for now I trust!}. It is a cautionary tale to anyone who is a key player in helping Trump, and continues to troll Trump to pardon him, a political gift to the democrats for the next 90 days if he does so. The real tragedy may be that Sullivan is removed or recuses himself at last, and a new judge is assigned and takes time to drag the case out more. This is about intimidation and perpetuating the gag order against Flynn, who in the end hopefully becomes a very rich man and starts talking at last about what he knows....with devastating effect I suspect. Obama's telling Trump that the two greatest threats he faced were Russia and Flynn speaks volumes about what they feared he would say and do.
#3
Next Tuesday, we may (or may not) know the disposition of this miscarriage of justice.
Sullivan ought to be ashamed of himself for taking his direction from Obummer (and the Swamp). His legacy will be that of a sycophant and not a judge interested in justice. He could have played it straight but didn't.
#5
The court will "split the baby" in the nastiest way possible. Flynn wile be declared "guilty but unadjuticable" (yes, I know, WTF does that mean?) Sullivan will be declared "judicially unassailable" (yes, I know, WTF does that mean?)
Business will go on as usual.

[RedState] The Portland rioters met in Laurelhurst Park to stage up to wreak havoc against the Penumbra Kelly Building, a police building which includes both the Portland Police Bureau and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
We reported on that action here.
But a small group of them also formed up there after their action against the police.
It was there they encountered someone/s they alleged were throwing “pipe bombs” at them and which they called a “terrorist bombing”

I've been seeing quite a few articles where black-clad Antifa members have shown up in some neighborhood and getting a beating before being been run-off.

Protesters should observe the 10 second rule. If it looks like a pipe bomb jump on it and count to ten. Then count to fifty. If it hasn't gone off yet it probably won't.

There will be no reliable numbers on infections / hospitilizations / fatalities due to CV alone. Ever.
The worst numbers available will be published.
You will not see an interview with anyone who has not directly been in contact with a CV "sufferer."

Speaking of garbage, a quick review of face diapers may be in order, brought to you by the California Department of Health: Wildfire Smoke FAQs
"Should I wear a mask during a wildfire, even if it's not really smoky where I am?
Surgical masks, dust masks, bandanas or other face coverings do not offer protection from particle pollution. Inexpensive paper "comfort" or "dust" masks commonly found at hardware stores are designed to trap large particles and do not provide enough protection for your lungs.
Mask use may give the wearer a false sense of security, which might encourage too much physical activity and time spent outdoors. Also, wearing a mask may actually be harmful to some people with heart or lung disease because it can make the lungs work harder to breathe."
So, they can't keep out smoke but, somehow, keep out/in viruses?

Gates was another source of funding for Wuhan. In a just country his wealth would be confiscated to provide for those financially strained by the pandemic.
[NationalReview] The U.S. unemployment rate dropped from 11.1 percent to 10.2 percent in July, beating economists’ predictions even as many states have paused or reversed their reopenings in light of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... case spikes.
Employers added 1.8 million jobs in July, according to the Labor Department’s Friday jobs report, a significant slowing down from the 4.8 million jobs created in June, which was the highest recorded. While the economy has recovered 42 percent of the 22 million jobs it lost during the pandemic over the past three months, there are still 10.6 million more unemployed Americans today than there were in February.
Economists had expected unemployment to drop to 10.5 percent and for the economy to have added 1.6 million jobs in July, according to a survey by Refinitiv.
[Babylon Bee] NASA has just released this official guide to more inclusive space terms. We're glad they did this, because honestly, every time someone referred to a Cesar Chavez Galaxy as a "sombrero galaxy," a person of Latinx heritage somewhere died a little inside. We are happy that our space program is finally getting woke.
Great job, NASA! But still, do better. But great job.
[PJ] Here is yet more evidence of the two-tier justice system we have in the United States. A "veteran insider" at the Department of Homeland Security revealed Wednesday that two different federal agencies have investigated Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Ankara) for months, but decided not to prosecute her for immigration fraud, despite clear and readily available evidence that she married her own brother as part of an elaborate immigration scam.
A key clue as to why there will be no prosecution can be seen in the fact that Omar has accused those who have researched her unusual marital arrangements of "Islamophobia." Ilhan Omar is a leftist, a black person, a woman, and a Muslim. These are the reasons why she will not be prosecuted. Anyone who dared to prosecute her would be excoriated in the establishment media as a racist "Islamophobe"; few have the courage to stand up against that onslaught.
And so Ilhan Omar can do whatever she wants, without fear of suffering any consequences. If you’re skeptical about that, ask yourself what the reaction would be if a conservative Republican Congressman, a white Christian man, was suspected of marrying his sister in order to commit immigration fraud. Do you think everyone would decline to prosecute in that case?
This is flagrant corruption, out in the open for anyone to see. Ilhan Omar is rubbing our noses in America’s current two-tier justice system. If one of the hoi polloi did something like this, he or she would face consequences. But Ilhan Omar knows she is golden. The standards that apply to other people don’t apply to her.
That is also clear from the fact that the curious case of her apparent marriage to her brother is not the only instance in which Omar has been found on the wrong side of the law. The controversial Congresswoman has a lengthy record of utter contempt for the law she has sworn to uphold and defend.

Special rules for special people. The least special people are white Christian republican men. The facade of equality under the law is shredding quickly now but this particular POS really insults everything I still believe in.

If it keeps up, there will be special punishments for the special people. These people will so obviously be seen as above the law that someone will decide to show they aren't above justice.

It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response... conflict.
According to the online newspaper Israel Hayom, the Venezuelan opposition leader "will seek to resume relations with Tel Aviv again."
The newspaper said, "Guaidó has appointed a Venezuelan of Jewish origin, who is Rabbi Pinchas Brenner, who led the Jewish community in Venezuela for years, as an ambassador to Israel, and in preparation for this step, a virtual embassy was opened via the Internet."
However, there's more than one way to skin a cat... they said Israel has yet to recognize any ambassador to their country.
The late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez severed relations with Israel 11 years ago, in protest against the Israeli military operation at the time in the Gaza Strip.
His successor, Nicholas Maduro, would later follow suit and not restore ties with Israel.

[NYPOST] Political correctness has now expanded to space, where NASA says planets, galaxies and other heavenly bodies will no longer be referred to by "offensive" nicknames.
In a blurb Thursday, the space agency said that all planets and heavenly bodies will be referred only to by their scientific names, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Under the new rules, the "Eskimo Nebula," discovered in 1787 by William Hershel, will only be referred to as NGC 2392.
The so-called "Siamese Twins Galaxy" will likewise be known only as NGC 4567 and NGC 4568.
"As the scientific community works to identify and address systemic discrimination and inequality in all aspects of the field, it has become clear that certain cosmic nicknames are not only insensitive but can be actively harmful," the agency said in a news release.
"NASA is examining its use of unofficial terminology for cosmic objects as part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion."
NASA’s Associate Administrator for Diversity and Equal Opportunity, Stephen T. Shih agreed, saying "These nicknames and terms may have historical or culture connotations that are objectionable or unwelcoming, and NASA is strongly committed to addressing them."

The police should arrest the city council. They are not politicians. They are leaders of militant mobs and gangs.
Find out who the people are that are destroying the town, where they work where they live, where they eat at, where they shop. And then remind them they cannot call 911 any more.
[Dhaka Tribune] The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner has transferred six police officers, including a deputy commissioner (DC) of DMP Mirpur Division, over the bomb blast at Pallabi police station in Dhaka on July 29. The explosion had injured four officers and one other.
DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam on Saturday transferred Mirpur division DC Mostak Ahmed and Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pallabi police station, to other posts through an official order.
Police sources said there is an allegation that the mishandling of explosives in Pallabi police station on the morning of July 29 had led to the blast, after police claimed to have arrested three goons from the Kalshi area.
However, family members of three arrested allege that they had been picked up a few days earlier.
DMP has formed a probe committee over the blast incident and the transfer orders were issued with the investigation ongoing.
However, DMP DC (Media) Walid Hossain said it was all part of routine transfers and the investigation was yet to be completed.
THE EXPLOSION
Pallabi police station OC Nazrul Islam (transferred) told Dhaka Tribune on July 29 that a police team recovered the bomb, which was hidden inside a digital weighing machine commonly used in general stores, during an operation in Pallabi's Kalshi area early on Wednesday. Three local criminals were also arrested during the operation. "Into th' paddy wagon wit' yez! C'mon! Move along!"
The bomb accidentally went off when the policemen tried to defuse it at the police station. "Piece of cake! Here, lemme just tug this here little wire [KABOOM!]"
All the injured were initially admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). "Aaaiiieee! I am undone!"
"Don't be so dramatic! Here, lemme just pull this here thing out and..."
"AAAARRRRGGGGHHH!"
"Young Doctor Md Kildare here will just stitch up ... whatever that is."
The incident took place against the backdrop of recent intelligence reports suggesting the members of New JMB, who follow Islamic State (IS) ideology, would try to carry out attacks in Bangladesh, including against police establishments, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. However, the authorities concerned have denied the involvement of militants in the incident and suspect that it was the work of local criminal groups. "Nar. They ain't terrorists. They're just goons."
"Can you define the difference?"
"No membership cards."
DMP Additional Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy said on July 29: “Recently, a group of criminals have been committing different crimes in the Mirpur region. "What crimes?"
"Different crimes."
"A team led by the Mirpur DC was trying to nab them for several days. "Calling all cars! Be on the lookout for goons!"
''Acting on a tip-off, Pallabi police arrested three members of the group near Kalshi cemetery at around 2am, while the other members managed to flee. "Flee! Flee for your lives! It is the law!"
"The trio had firearms, four bullets and a device that looked like a weighing machine in their possession.'' "Boss! Boss! Gimme a bullet!"
"No! You hold the weighing machine! And whatever you do, don't drop it!"
The weighing machine seemed suspicious, which was why the police called the bomb disposal unit. "A weighing machine?"
"Yes. It's a... ummm... gift!"
"For who?"
"For Mister Big!"
"Nar. He's already got a weighing machine!"
A member of the bomb disposal unit came to the station and analysed the device. "Bomb squad! Maake way! Make way!"
Later, he sought help from a member of the unit specialised in defusing bombs and asked him to come to the station with a few more tools. "I thought you were with the bomb squad?"
"Yeah, but I don't defuse weighing machines. That takes a specialist!"

Joe Biden is reportedly considering Barack Obama’s former national-security adviser Susan Rice to be his running mate. National Review’s Jim Geraghty recently told us "20 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Susan Rice."
I worked with Rice during the Clinton administration and have five more things the public needs to know.
1. Rice was obsessed with U.N. peacekeeping to solve world conflicts.
2. Rice disliked hearing opposing views.
3. Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice did not get along because Rice refused to abide by the State Department’s chain of command.
4. Rice, not Clinton, took the fall for the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi because Clinton outsmarted her.
5. Rice was a key player in the Clinton administration’s bungling of African conflicts and genocide.

The authorities had previously put the number of people maimed in Tuesday's blast at 5,000, stressing that at least 120 of them were considered to be at death's door.

They entered the empty buildings of the Foreign Ministry and declared it the headquarters of their protest movement. [UPI] President Donald Trump ...His ancestors didn't own any slaves... signed several executive orders Saturday, including an order to provide an extra $400 in weekly unemployment aid to those whose $600 weekly benefits expired in July as well as eviction protections and student loan relief.
A fourth executive order would defer payroll tax payments for people who earn less than $100,000. It would take effect retroactively and continue through December.
During a presser in Bedminster, N.J., Saturday to announce the orders, the President said if he is reelected in November he would "terminate" the payroll tax, which funds Social Security and Medicare benefits.
The executive order to provide $400 in weekly benefits requires that 25% of that funding be paid by states, many of whom are struggling with unexpected drops in revenue and have pleaded with Congress to receive additional aid.
Trump has sought a payroll tax deferral for more than a year with little support from Congress, but the other three issues were the subject of tense partisan negotiations in recent weeks as some parts of this spring's CARES Act expired.

[Al Ahram] French patrol boats on Saturday rescued dozens of migrants colonists from makeshift boats in the Channel that were heading to England, maritime officials said.
British interior minister Priti Patel on Friday described the volume of migrants colonists crossing the Channel as "appalling and unacceptably high" and called on La Belle France to help keep numbers down.
La Belle France's regional maritime monitoring and rescue operation said it acted "on several reports of small boats of migrants colonists in difficulty in the straights" off Calais.
At around 8:00 am a French patrol boat saved 17 migrants colonists aboard two separate vessels northeast of La Belle France's port city of Calais, said the operation said in a statement.
About an hour later another boat rescued 16 migrants colonists from another vessel in trouble off Sangatte, which used to host a makeshift camp for migrants colonists heading to England.
Border police serving the Calais region are looking after the 33 migrants colonists, whose nationalities were not immediately disclosed, the statement said.
Since January 1, the French authorities have intercepted at least 810 migrants colonists trying to cross the Channel to England, according to official figures tabulated by AFP.
Later French police reported finding eight migrants colonists in the back of lorry from Spain driven by a Russian national, who they arrested.

Mr, Wife says Big Bag is a technical term, also known as a Super Sack. They are sewn polypropylene or canvas containers for powders, the base 1 square meter, 1-1.5 meters high. They are normally stored two to three layers high, in fancier warehouses on racks but otherwise just stacked neatly and tightly together.
He says the pictures from Beirut show material stored exactly that way in Big Bags.
But there are rules about how to store explosive materials in bulk — amount per storage space, ventilation, and so forth, in order to prevent it exploding. It has nothing to do with the container itself, which are not intended to prevent such things. The photos in the tweet look like a stock photo to him.

Hospital officials said that around 20 people were maimed in the blast.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Polish border guards have detained 34 people from the Middle East, including four women and four children, who were traveling in a trailer of the lorry that came from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... via Slovakia, authorities said on Saturday.
They were detained on Friday night and are being held at the border guards station in Bielsko-Biala, a front man for the regional border guards service in southern Poland Szymon Moscicki said.
He said the detainees were thought to be citizens of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Kurds from Turkey. It was not immediately clear where they ultimately aimed to travel. "This isn't Lyft?"
Even though migrant flows to Poland never reached the same scale as in neighboring Germany, immigration was a campaign topic ahead of the 2015 general election, helping the Law and Justice (PiS) party to take over power.
The conservative-nationalist government has said it has restricted entry to refugees due to security concerns. Politicians often use the word "migrants colonists" as a blanket term, rather than "refugees".

[SEATTLETIMES] An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for an 18-year-old man who King County prosecutors say fled the state immediately after he fatally shot a man in June in the six-block area then known as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP) zone.
Marcel Long, who remains on the lam, was charged Wednesday with premeditated first-degree murder in the death of Lorenzo Anderson, a 19-year-old Seattle man who was pronounced dead at Harborview Medical Center 33 minutes after police received the first 911 calls about the early-morning shooting on June 20, the charges say. The murder charge also carries a firearms enhancement.
Long, who also goes by the name Marcel Green and is known as "Celly Cell" on social media, has a last known address in Renton, according to the charges. His bail was set at $2 million and he is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 19.
"Detectives identified the defendant within a day of the shooting, and they received information that the defendant immediately fled the state. All efforts to locate him have been unsuccessful," Senior Deputy Prosecutor Erin Ehlert wrote in the charges. "The defendant’s willingness to fire his weapon around crowds of people, in his effort to kill Lorenzo, demonstrates the severe danger he represents to the community and the risk of harm to others. His immediate flight also demonstrates his desire to avoid being held accountable for this crime."
Seattle police have determined that Anderson’s killing is unrelated to a non-fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man in the CHOP that occurred roughly 16 minutes after Anderson was shot. Earlier this week, detectives appealed for the public’s help in identifying several persons of interest in that shooting, according to an item posted on SPD’s online blotter.

[EN.ANNAHAR] The Kataeb party's three politicians in parliament are resigning in protest against the government over this week’s deadly blast.
Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel made his comments on Saturday during the funeral of a bigwig with the Kataeb Party who was killed in Tuesday’s blast that destroyed Beirut’s port and damaged the capital.
The Kataeb party is part of the opposition and is known for its harsh criticism of the government that is backed by the turban Hezbollah group and its allies.
Leb ...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers... ’s parliament has 128-members and some politicians have said they will resign in protest over widespread corruption. MP Paula Yacoubian from the "Tahalof Watani" party has also resigned.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The amount of ammonium nitrate which led to the deadly Beirut explosion must have been much less than the original stockpile or else the Lebanese capital would have been "erased," Russian military expert Viktor Murakhovsky said.
The Beirut blast, which claimed the lives of at least 158 people and injured 6,000 others, was so intense it smashed masonry, shattered windows, sucked furniture out of apartments onto the streets and left almost 300,000 people in disaster-stricken Beirut without homes fit to live in, according to Lebanese officials.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun ...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah... had said the earth-shattering kaboom was due to a stockpile of 2,750 tonnes of the industrial chemical ammonium nitrate, used in fertilizers and explosives, catching fire after having been stored at the port since 2013 without safety measures.
However, women are made to be loved, not understood... Murakhovsky said that if the full amount announced by Lebanese officials did explode, it would have erased Beirut off the map.
The military expert added in an interview with Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda that it is much more likely thon the lam amounts from such a stockpile were stolen over the years.

that it is much more likely that large amounts were stolen over the years
...or sold and sent to terrorist trouble spots in the region for IED and bomb making.
The 2700 tons of Ammonium nitrate should have made, assuming it all went off at once, a 1 to 2 kiloton TNT equivalent explosion but the various detailed measurements only come in at 0.1 to 0.3 kilotons

On of the problems limiting the size of very large chemical explosions is how to get it to detonate evenly before the 'bomb' disassembles itself. Most large military bombs have multiple detonators distributed throughout the charge, both as backups and to beat the initial pulse through the charge.
Likely that huge cloud in the videos had a significant amount of 'unburned' ammonite, which then settled as dust downwind. Kind of like the unburned powder that fouls the barrel of your firearm.

per the various videos, e.g. this one,
there seem to have been 3 stages to the explosion(s)
stage one - white smoke with flashes at the base
stage two - larger red and black blast
stage three - even larger white blast, a half second or so after stage two, which evidently had a pressure wave

It's not TNT. It's 2.7 kilotons of something lesser with the limitations described above. The live video points to a 1.5 kt or so blast. BDA should give a decent estimate.

That's the ground turned to dust. Result is the crater. As the downward portion of the blast is now reflect back up, you get the highest pressure difference and the formation of the shock wave from the ground up.

Is some effort being made to track down where the bail money originates? We should track down the bail fund to individuals. Sooner or later we can find out which politicians are connected.

[UPI] A federal appeals court has dissolved an injunction on four Arkansas laws imposing new requirements to obtain an child sacrifice abortion.
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday vacated District Judge Kristine Baker's injunction put in place in 2017.
Baker's ruling blocked four laws: one that bans the second-trimester child sacrifice abortion procedure dilation and evacuation; a second that requires doctors to notify law enforcement when anyone 16 or younger obtains an child sacrifice abortion; a third that requires doctors to review a woman's medical records to ensure she isn't using the procedure as a form of sex selection if she knows the fetus's sex; and a fourth that requires a patient to notify a partner or family regarding disposal of child sacrifice abortion remains.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the national Center for Reproductive Rights said the ruling won't take effect for 21 days, allowing the four laws to remain blocked until Aug. 28.
"If allowed to take effect, these restrictions would completely block many people from obtaining child sacrifice abortion care, and would eventually leave the state with even more limited child sacrifice abortion care," the ACLU said in a statement.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Ottoman Turkish lira hit new lows on Thursday as The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... continues to face economic uncertainty with the lira continuing to fall and inflation rising. With a continued lack of foreign investment and tourism levels down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ottoman Turkish citizens are feeling the pain of the economic turmoil that threatens the country. In just two weeks, the lira went from around 6.80 to $1 at its lowest point to over 7.20 in the first week of August.
Ismail Berker Beysel, an undergraduate student and an IT analyst intern, has noticed the rise in prices lately. While the extent of the increase varies from product to product, he noted that there was a large increase overall.
"I had to make some adjustments to my shopping routines," he told Al Arabiya English. "But nothing too major. I canceled some of my online subscriptions because of increasing foreign currencies. Also, I focused on investments and savings to plan ahead."

[Takimag] In the biopic Mr. Jones, the insidious Peter Sarsgaard plays Walter Duranty, the sinister New York Times Moscow correspondent who covered up Stalin's Ukraine famine of the early 1930s.
Duranty, who won a 1932 Pulitzer Prize for his PR work for the Kremlin in the Times, remains something of an enigma despite his notoriety as a propounder of Fake News. What motivated Duranty to paint such a rosy picture of the Five-Year Plan?
In an era of grim ideologues, Duranty was a charming mountebank. Journalist Malcolm Muggeridge, who knew him in Moscow during Duranty’s glory days in the 1930s, recalled four decades later:
I always enjoyed his company; there was something vigorous, vivacious, preposterous, about his unscrupulousness which made his persistent lying somehow absorbing.
In the years after the stock market crash of 1929, when only the Soviet Union appeared to have any money to spend, many intellectuals quickly became converts to Marxism. (Few, though, wondered where Stalin was getting the money to buy foreign factories and subsidize visits by luminaries like George Bernard Shaw.)

The NYT was and still is proud of his work. Should have told you everything about what the NYT stands for.
[ALMASDARNEWS] A new video widely shared on social media shows a Russian air defense system being moved into a strategic city in Libya.
According to the video, the Russian-made Pantsir-S1 system can be seen being transported near the strategic port-city of Sirte, which is where both the Libyan National Army (LNA) and Government of National Accord (GNA) forces have been amassing troops for several weeks.
In this instance, however, the Pantsir-S1 system is being deployed by the Libyan National Army, who is currently backed by a number of foreign countries, including Egypt, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to the Russian publication, Avia.Pro, "On the presented video frames, you can see the passage of the military column of the Libyan National Army, at the head of which is moving the Russian-made Pantsir-C1 complex."
The publication said that "the complex is supposed to provide cover for the positions of the Libyan National Army, the main forces of which are located in Sirte, and, according to the sources, today, Sirte is under the protection of at least 8 Pantsir-S complexes, and this far from all air defense systems deployed in this area of the North African state."
It should be noted that the Libyan National Army has several Russian-made air defense systems, including a plethora of Pantsir-S1s, which have been used on several occasions to shoot down enemy aircraft.

The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize... has published satellite images of the submerged hull of the ship, the MV Rhosus, on the northern edge of the port.
According to the newspaper, the 86-metre-long single-deck vessel, flying a Moldovan flag and owned by Cyprus-based businessman Igor Grechushkin, began sinking in February 2018 after years of being stranded in the port.
The ship was carrying 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate — commonly used as an agricultural fertiliser — from Georgia to Mozambique in the autumn of 2013. It made an unscheduled stop in Beirut after it suffered a malfunction, Lebanese lawyers representing the crew wrote in 2015.
The New York Times reports, citing then-captain Boris Prokoshev, that the ship had actually docked to pick up additional cargo to be transported to Jordan for extra cash.
Port officials barred the Rhosus from sailing upon inspecting the ship, according to the lawyers, and it was abandoned by owners after charterers lost interest in the cargo.

Normally I wouldn’t offer a thoughtful response to a bunch of grown men talking like fourteen-year-old schoolgirls gossiping at recess. (Really, M. Murcek? Jo Jorgensen looks like a man? Please.) But as the moderators can confirm, I’ve been reading and contributing to Rantburg since nearly the beginning; longer than most of you, in fact. Admittedly I mostly read each day and very occasionally comment rather than posting articles. But I’ve been here, reading and following your arguments. So now I’ll rant for the first time in years.
Many of you need to take the clear pill, step back for a few moments, take a view so long that it’s nearly orbital, and really think about the state of American politics right now. Have a cold, hard look at our two party system, and realize that it’s entered its final death spiral. The Democratic and Republican parties have the American people – all of us, regardless of our differences – locked into a false Manichean binary paradigm that’s little better than a single party totalitarian state. We are constantly forces to conceptualize issues as if there can only be two opinions – only two rational opinions in all of politics - and then polarize and take sides against one another based on that false paradigm. It’s garbage. It’s cheap authoritarian memetics designed to keep the population locked into a useful cycle of fear. Because there are, in fact, more than two ways of looking at problems. And you all know it.
People are Republicans because they’re terrified of the Democrats, and vice-versa. Nobody has any real affection for either party. It’s just the “way it is” - and wanting to break out of Late Stage Two Party System is seen as madness or treason. Which is in and of itself madness because every other free nation on earth has more than two functional political parties. (Really. I’ve been out of The Shire before, and I can attest that we’re not like the rest of Middle Earth.) But that attitude helps to perpetuate a system which simulates the effects of a single party system, while keeping up the mirage of being democratic to the public. And that system is fixed in such a way that it’s nearly impossible for an alternate political party to win a race, even at a local level. That’s not freedom. It’s nearly Soviet. It’s a sick joke – and the American people are its straight man, year after year.
I’m half a century old, and for thirty years of that I’ve been a small “l” libertarian who felt it morally necessary to be either a registered Democrat or, as I got older, a Republican. Because that’s the way the system works, primary voting matters, one has to be pragmatic, “this is the most consequential election in history,” etc etc ad nausium. But I’m done with that. I’m done with constantly favoring cynicism over idealism. So now I’m a large “L” Libertarian; because I am one, and because that’s the best option I’ve got to oppose in some small way a political system that’s so glaringly obviously reached it’s terminal end game. And when the kooks in the Libertarian party take the stage to say their part, I don’t cringe as hard as I used to as a Republican or Democrat. (Which was very hard indeed.)
I freely admit that I would rather Trump be president than Biden. But it’s a devil’s bargain; it’s glaringly obvious that neither of them should hold the presidency. And the fact that those are our choices, rationally looked at from a neutral perspective, means that the United States needs more than two functional political parties. The Libertarian, Green, and Constitution parties might not be ideal vessels of that badly needed change; but they’re what there is to work with right now. Because we’re being pushed by the inevitable logic of the two party system into another civil war we don’t need to have, and that will have as many unforeseen long-term consequences to our society as the last one.
And a final point. If Hegel and Marx were right and history is an endless cycle of revolution, reaction, and synthesis, what grows out of that cycle in 2020 when the synthesizing components are nationalism (the Republicans) and socialism (the Democrats)? Is it “cold fucking nuts” to not want to vote to further perpetuate that particular cycle?

SM, Trump is a Capitalist. Never a politician. After the professional politicians of all stripes and colors became unified in DC against capitalism, Americans defied them by electing the most famous Capitalist, non professional swamp politician of our time, Donald J Trump.
[EN.ANNAHAR] The Lebanese Army evacuated protesters who stormed the buildings of a number of government ministries and the headquarters of the country's banking association channeling their rage against state and financial institutions after the huge blast that killed over 160.
Earlier on Saturday, protesters entered the empty buildings of the Foreign Ministry and declared it the headquarters of their protest movement. Others fanned out to enter the Economy and Energy ministries, and some walked away with documents claiming they will reveal the extent of corruption that permeates the government. Some also entered the Environment Ministry. Meanwhile, ...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase... dozens of protesters broke into the banking association headquarters.
Saturday's rally was in response to the devastating explosion at the Port of Beirut on Tuesday that killed nearly 160 people and maimed 6,000, defacing the capital’s coastline. Protesters demanded justice for the victims and wanted to hold the government accountable, complaining that years of corruption and mismanagement have brought about the disaster.
Public anger had already been rising in Leb ...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers... before the blast because of an unprecedented financial crisis in which the national currency lost 80% of its value. Banks imposed informal capital controls in a controversial effort to control the collapse of the pound and foreign currency flight. The dire conditions were deepened with rising power cuts and concerns that hospitals were facing severe shortages and financial troubles.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First ...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important... said on Friday, that his country has resumed exploration operations in the eastern Mediterranean, noting that Greece has not complied with its commitments related to exploration for energy resources in the region. After Friday prayers at the Hagia Sophia Mosque, Erdogan said: "We have started excavation work again ... I don’t think we are obligated to talk to those who do not have rights in the areas of maritime powers."
He added that a "seismic" survey ship had been sent to the region to carry out its duties.
The ship he referred to had moved to an area opposite the coast of Cyprus in late July and remained there.
Erdogan’s comments came in response to a question about the agreement signed by Egypt and Greece on Thursday to define the exclusive economic zone of both countries in the eastern Mediterranean.
In Greece, diplomats said that the agreement between Athens and Cairo effectively nullified an agreement reached last year between The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund... and the Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... -based Government of National Accord, but Erdogan stressed that the Egyptian-Greek agreement is worthless and that Turkey will maintain its agreement with Libya "firmly."
