#5  While looking for the raw FBI data to support this headline, I found Truth or Fiction which says the claim is "Decontextualized".

They post several similar claims from various sources, then spinning and spinning until I was dizzy, before finally claiming "Overall, gun homicides numbered far more than knife-related homicides, but a smaller number of those homicides were rifle-related."

On the other hand, that's what the articles said - knives kill more people than rifles.

But if handguns are more deadly than rifles, why the big deal about rifles/shotguns?

Because that's what Beto and his socialist brethren are harping about at the moment.

They'll come for the handguns later.

Anti-Trump Whistleblower Attorney Worked Directly For James Clapper
[The Federalist] One of the attorneys representing the anonymous "whistleblowers" accusing President Donald Trump of conspiring with foreign leaders to interfere in the next U.S. presidential election used to report directly to former director of national intelligence James Clapper.

Charles McCullough, an attorney now representing the whistleblowers with Andrew Bakaj, a former staffer for Sens. Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton, was previously the inspector general of the intelligence community (ICIG) at the height of the Clinton email scandal.

Now a partner at the Compass Rose Legal Group, McCullough’s professional biography on the law firm’s website notes that he reported directly to Clapper as ICIG and "oversaw intelligence officers responsible for audits, inspections, investigations."

Clapper, who joined CNN as a national security analyst after leaving government in 2017, was a central figure in perpetuating the Russia hoax against Trump and lied to Congress about mass surveillance on Americans. When asked under oath in March 2013 by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., whether the federal government was collecting "any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans," Clapper responded "no sir... not wittingly."

While director of the Department of National Intelligence, Clapper was instrumental in crafting whistleblower protections mandating that no employee of the intelligence committee be made subject to reprisals for reports made in compliance with department guidelines.

Last December, McCullough praised Clapper in an interview with Fox 5. "I enjoyed a very good relationship with Jim Clapper, we got along fabulously."

Dick's CEO Says Anti-Gun Policy Shrank Company by a ‘Quarter Billion Dollars'
[Free Beacon] The CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods told CBS News this weekend that his decisions to stop selling certain guns and hire lobbyists to push for new gun bans have cost his company roughly $250 million.

CBS Sunday Morning host Lee Cowan asked Dick's CEO Ed Stack how much his company lost after the retailer decided to stop selling firearms to anyone under the age of 21.

"About a quarter of a billion," Stack replied. "Pretty close."

Stack also said the company destroyed $5 million worth of rifle inventory because Stack believed no one should be allowed to own them.

"I said, ’You know what? If we really think these things should be off the street, we need to destroy them,'" he told CBS.

#1  "In the company's 2018 annual report, he wrote that gun sales were a "sizeable part" of Dick's business" Are they a privately held company, how does he still have a job?

There are many ways they could have gone about removing guns from inventory (Sell existing stock, split the company to create a hunting-based spin-off, quietly return the guns to the manufacturers) but Dick's CEO insulted customers while virtue-signaling to never-gonna-be-customers and he cost the company big.

And he said the losses are about what he expected. He should be tarred-and-feathered.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Intelligence agent arrested for spilling secrets to journalists
[NY Post] The feds busted a Defense Intelligence Agency worker Wednesday for leaking classified national defense information to two journalists in 2018 and 2019 ‐ one of whom he was
formerly
shacking up with.

Henry Kyle Frese, 30, a counterintelligence analyst from Alexandria, Virginia, who had a Top Secret security clearance, was indicted Tuesday on two counts of willful transmission of national defense information to persons not entitled to receive it.

"Frese was caught red-handed disclosing sensitive national security information for personal gain," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers, who cited ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions vow to pursue leakers as the motivation for the probe.

According to court documents, between mid-April and early May 2018, Frese took classified intelligence reports, some of which were unrelated to his job duties, and using his cellphone gave top secret information about a foreign country's weapons systems to an unnamed journalist.
Just a little treason for nookie, amirite?
Frese and the journalist had the same residential address for a year starting in August 2017, and, based on Frese's social media pages, "it appears that they were involved in a romantic relationship for some or all of that period of time," the feds said in a statement.

The release of the unspecified secrets could be "expected to cause exceptionally grave harm to the national security of the United States," they said, declining to elaborate.

The first journalist then asked Frese if he would be willing to help another journalist who was her colleague. The names of the journalists and the news organizations they worked for were not revealed.

"Frese stated that he was ‘down' to help Journalist 2 if it helped Journalist 1 because he wanted to see Journalist 1 ‘progress,' the statement said.

The first journalist would ask Frese for certain information for articles she was writing for an unnamed publication, and she published at least eight articles that were allegedly based on classified information.

The second journalist also published articles based on the information

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Ronan Farrow Claims Hillary Clinton Pressured Him to Kill Weinstein Story
[Breitbart] One of the many news-making revelations in Ronan Farrow’s upcoming book, Catch and Kill, is that he received pressure from Hillary Clinton to back off his reporting on Harvey Weinstein.

The far-left Hollywood Reporter, which received an advanced copy of the book, naturally buried this bombshell under no fewer than 20 paragraphs and a headline that says nothing about Madame Clinton.

What we also learn is that while Weinstein’s move to leverage his relationship with Hillary Clinton was successful in putting pressure on Farrow, Weinstein was not able to leverage his relationship with filmmaker Woody Allen (Weinstein financed and produced a number of Allen’s films) to help him with Farrow.

Allen, who is Farrow’s father
(suuuuure he is),
reportedly told the soon-to-be-disgraced mogul, "Jeez, I’m so sorry. Good luck."

Here’s the relevant Hollywood Reporter excerpt (emphasis mine):
Weinstein also attempted to leverage his long-term relationship with Hillary Clinton to pressure Farrow, he writes. In summer 2017, while Farrow was trying to lock down an interview with Clinton for his foreign policy book ‐ while also still working on the Weinstein story ‐ he received a call from Clinton’s publicist, Nick Merrill, who told him that the "big story" Farrow was working on was a "concern for us." Then, in September 2017, according to an email cited in the book, Weinstein wrote to Deborah Turness, the ex-president of NBC News who now runs NBC News International, to propose a docuseries on Clinton. "Your Hillary doc series sounds absolutely stunning," Turness responded.

Weinstein’s tentacles even stretched to Farrow’s own estranged father. Days before the Times story broke, Weinstein is said to have called Allen on a film set in Central Park, soliciting advice about how to deal with his son. Allen declined: "Jeez, I’m so sorry. Good luck."

Please note that Merrill is Hillary’s longtime publicist. He works for her, and it seems unlikely he would do such a thing without her instructions. What’s more, as of now, Merrill has not denied the reporting.

To understand just how awful Hillary’s behavior is here, you have to keep in mind the context of the time, of what was happening in 2017.

To begin with, as Breitbart News reported in December 2017, there are credible reports Hillary Clinton had known about Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct and abuse going back to her failed 2016 presidential campaign.

Brennan Backstroke: Ex-CIA head Brennan on Trump attacks: I may have relied on ‘bad information'
Smell the fear
[NY Post] Former head of the CIA John Brennan admitted on Monday that he may have relied on "bad information" for his relentless attacks on President Trump.
My bad - this is from March - after the initial Mueller summary was released
Brennan ‐ who once warned that "our Nation's future is at stake" ‐ told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that he may have been misled on the extent of Trump's connections to Russia.

"Well, I don't know if I received bad information but I think I suspected there was more than there actually was," Brennan said. "I am relieved that it's been determined there was not a criminal conspiracy with the Russian government over our election."

The former spy chief was reacting to a summary report by Attorney General William Barr released on Saturday that states there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Brennan still maintained that there were inappropriate attempts to communicate with the Kremlin but said he was "not all that surprised that the high bar of criminal conspiracy was not met."

Hillary Clinton Announces She Will Seek Reelection As President Of The United States
[Babylon Bee] WASHINGTON, D.C.‐Hillary Clinton has announced that after much debate she will seek reelection as president of the United States.

Pundits on MSNBC, CNN, and ABC News have long pondered whether Clinton would seek reelection or allow someone else to step in, and now she's made a definitive declaration.

"After much deliberation, consultation, and prayer to Moloch, I have decided that I will seek a second term," she said to a crowd gathered at a local Wendy's restaurant. "I feel I haven't accomplished everything I wanted to in my first term, and I really need a full eight years to implement my final solution to all of America's problems."

"Orange man bad! Orange man bad!" she chanted at one heckler, though the heckler turned out to be a Wendy's worker asking if she wanted the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger 4 for $4 or the chicken sandwich one.

Aides then gently ushered her back onto the bus to take her back to Bright Sunrise Home For Seniors.

Anti-Trump Psychodrama 10.0
What do the Kavanaugh hearings, Jussie Smollett, the Covington kids, the Mueller investigation, and now the Trump phone call all have in common?

Staged melodrama, media collusion hysteria, progressive demands that justice be served immediately, promises of walls-are-closing-in blockbuster revelations from new witnesses, supposed surprise revelatory documents, fusions between Democratic politicians and Washington bureaucrats ‐ and then bust, nada, and teeth-gnashing as the truth catches up to various rumor-mongers.

The disgraced purveyors of lies ‐ a Christine Blasey Ford, Michael Avenatti, Nathan Phillips, Jussie Smollet, Adam Schiff ‐ for a time go mute, content with progressives' praise that they lied for a moral cause and almost pulled it off.

The particular narrative is not all that important, at least compared with a general overriding theme: We are in a virtual civil war, and the Left believes that it can win over the hearts and minds of 20 to 30 percent of the swing voters in the United States with therapeutic tales of racism, sexism, unearned white privilege, and right-wing greed and selfishness, and also by destroying the elected president. Particular events in the news are warped and twisted, to the degree that they can be, to serve that narrative ‐ on the principle that the superior moral end of ensuring a radical equality of result more than justifies the often tawdry and dishonest means to achieve it.

Christine Blasey Ford's recovered-memory accusations that a teenaged Brett Kavanaugh, nearly 40 years ago, had assaulted her were not corroborated by any firsthand witnesses, and Ford provided no reliable information on the place or date of the alleged assault. The investigation did turn up plenty of contradictory evidence, including denials from her closest friends and from people she herself named as witnesses to the alleged attack.

Just this September, Kavanaugh 2.0 played out, when two New York Times reporters wished to revise the psychodrama on its first anniversary by publishing new lurid assault charges that someone had "pushed" Kavanaugh's dangling phallus into the hands of an innocent woman. That macabre tale imploded within hours after we learned that the supposed victim had no memory of the assault and that the single secondhand hearsay source was a left-wing politico who chose to remain quiet about his former charges.

About ten months ago, we witnessed another progressive morality farce, between stereotypical evil white Christian kids wearing MAGA hats and a saintly Native American, Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips, who was threatened by the punk kids and yet spoke truth to power when he resisted their slurs by beating a drum.

Phillips, we were told, had served in battle on behalf of spoiled white kids who repaid with insults and racism befitting their privileged airs. When it was revealed that the activist Nathan Phillips had never been to Vietnam, that he was a chronic liar, that he was the one who had first walked over to the teenagers and initiated the stand-off by banging a drum in their faces, and that the kids were being mocked by a group of African-American cult activists, the Left shrugged, went quiet for a bit, and then assumed that facts were not very important because a greater truth had been revealed in yet another pushback against the white male Christian hierarchy.

Shortly after the Covington caper, an apparent opportunist has-been actor Jussie Smollett, of half African-American ancestry, gave America his own concocted fable about being attacked by two white supremacists in MAGA hats, who were apparently (while carrying bleach and rope) randomly prowling the liberal streets of Chicago ‐ in the early-morning hours in subfreezing weather ‐ hoping just maybe to lynch any young, gay African-American actor like Smollett on his way to buy a sandwich at 2 a.m.

In his retelling of the epic battle with the two racist monsters, the doused and noosed Smollett managed to beat them back, hold on to his cellphone and sandwich, and make his wounded way home, with the rope still around his neck. Smollett was crushed that his attackers not only used the N-word and gay slurs but also went so far as deride his television show Empire ‐ an African-American cable-television series that was apparently a big hit with the white-supremacist community.

The Left, of course, went ballistic. Politicians and stars virtue-signaled their outrage at yet further proof of Trump's racist America. When it was revealed that two black Nigerians admitted that Smollett had hired them to stage the mock assault, and had them dress up with the suitable masks and red-hat props, the story fell apart. Nonetheless, the felony charges against Smollett (for disorderly conduct and filing a false report) were quickly dropped, and embarrassed leftists have rarely mentioned the caper, despite the cost and harm it did to the nation.

In May 2017, Robert Mueller was appointed special counsel to investigate Trump's alleged "collusion" with the Russians and "obstruction" in seeking to impede Mueller's "all-stars" and "dream team" of mostly progressive lawyers, some who had a history of close association with Clinton interests and many who had been donors to the Clinton campaign. For the next 22 months of the $32 million investigation, the media weekly leaked supposedly sensational disclosures leaked by "unnamed sources" and "high-ranking officials who prefer to remain anonymous." Adam Schiff was periodically wheeled out to grimace and say he was disturbed at the shocking crimes of Donald Trump that he had seen in secret.

When a befuddled Mueller was finished, he had found no collusion and no grounds to indict Trump for impeding his investigation of the crime that he had just concluded did not exist. When Mueller rambled before Congress, he was unable to remember basic facts of his own inquiry and for the most part appear muddled and confused.

The only salient fact about the collusion investigation was Mueller's own embarrassing lack of knowledge of Christopher Steele's fabricated dossier, gleaned largely from Russian plants and sources. The fake-news document had been paid for by candidate Hillary Clinton to undermine the Trump campaign, and it later became a source for lurid stories about Trump that were peddled by Obama-era officials in the FBI, DOJ, and CIA to undermine the Trump transition and presidency.

Not only were there no apologies; there also was no embarrassment that zealots for 22 months and $32 million of wasted money had lied about Trump's imminent indictment and disgrace. If anyone could have found an iota of wrongdoing on Trump's part, it was the dream team that hated Trump's guts, though in the end, they found no collusion at all.

Now on schedule we are on to yet another progressive psychodrama. This time we were told that a blockbuster transcript of Trump's phone call with the Ukrainian president would prove Trump's collusion with a foreign power to hurt his presidential rival Joe Biden.

Then the transcript was released, and it showed no quid pro quo. As with the projection of the Mueller case, Trump's domestic foes in the Ukraine imbroglio were accusing Trump of what they themselves had done. The only explicit threats to cut off Ukrainian aid were made not by Trump but by Joe Biden himself, who boasted, on camera at a public event, that he had forced the firing of a prosecutor ‐ a prosecutor who was looking into his own son's profiteering in Ukraine ‐ by threatening to cut $1 billion in Obama-administration aid to Ukraine.

Over the next few days, in the manner of these earlier concocted tales, a number of contradictory facts arose that destroyed the narrative. Three Democratic U.S. senators had earlier written the Ukrainian government and, in far more explicit language than Trump used, warned them to investigate in a fashion that the senators preferred.

The Ukrainian government did not, as alleged, substantiate the charges against Trump but in fact asserted that Trump had not pressured them for dirt on Biden in exchange for aid ‐ the sort of gambit that Biden himself had earlier bragged about employing.

Almost daily, pieces of the Ukrainian hoax fell apart. Senator Chris Murphy ‐ who had charged out to issue a statement that Ukrainians on an earlier visit had complained directly to him about Trump interference ‐ now recalibrated his tale, perhaps fearing that Ukraine would release contradictory evidence.

The complaint file itself hardly seemed the work of a whistleblower. Instead, in the style of the Steele dossier and the Mueller investigation, it footnoted liberal media sources as verification, cited past legal rulings and cases, and seemed the work of progressive attorneys. Oddly, whistleblower forms had been mysteriously changed retroactively to legitimize the complainant's charges on the basis of hearsay without the need for a single firsthand example of direct knowledge of wrongdoing.

Adam Schiff, to heighten the drama of the caper, opened a congressional hearing by reading from the transcript of the Trump call to the Ukrainian president. Only he didn't. Instead he ad-libbed and recited a fantasy version that contradicted the actual transcript in several places ‐ much as the whistleblower complaint also erred in key ways. When caught, he pled that he was offering a "parody" for effect. Schiff's staff, it may well turn out, hand-in-glove coached the "whistleblower" well before he went public.

We have learned nothing and forgotten nothing in all these instances. There is an eerie sameness about all of them. The media go berserk with rumors of a "groundbreaking" disclosure. Talking points are issued, which liberal news readers regurgitate ad nauseam. Democratic would-be presidential candidates rush to social media with the grimmest predications and loudest condemnations. Sober and judicious ‐ and terrified ‐ Republican politicians and pundits virtue-signal their own wide distance from the MAGA operatives and Trump himself. No one waits for all the evidence. Instead, they endlessly replay the Ox-Bow Incident over the electronic airwaves.

When it is all over, there are no apologies and no contriteness, just a shrug. After all, if it wasn't true, it could have been, or it reflected a higher moral truth, and lying for noble ends justifies the means. In fact, those who call out the rumor-mongers, sanctimonious scolds, and political hacks are usually themselves damned as racists, homophobes, Stalinists, Trump robots, conspiracy theorists, or any such slur deemed useful in projectionist fashion to deflect their own culpability.

So here we are, on the eve of impeaching a president on the basis of disgruntled White House staffers, whose rumors in secondhand and thirdhand fashion were passed on to a "whistleblower" who worked hand in hand with partisan lawyers and Adam Schiff to circumvent the normal whistleblower protocols and smear a president.

And we will all shrug and grow quiet ‐ at least until the next Blasey Ford, Michael Avenatti, Jussie Smollett, Nathan Philipps, dream-team, all-star star chamber, James Comey, or "anonymous" crusading "whistleblower" comes forth to seek notoriety and do his yeoman's work to rid the country of Trump and all his odious henchmen.
124

Meanwhile, they have no idea of the wreckage they have inflicted on the intelligence agencies, the media, the Democratic party, themselves, and the country ‐ or much less why a growing number of Americans are sick of them all.

Possible terror attack with automatic guns in Halle (Germany)
[BBC] The shootings took place in the Paulus area. Witnesses had reported a gunman wearing military camouflage and carrying several weapons.

The Bild newspaper said the attack took place near a synagogue but this has not been officially confirmed.

One witness said one attacker had thrown a Molotov cocktail or grenade over a cemetery wall.

#1  Scrap "possible"

At least two people have been killed after gunmen opened fire outside a synagogue. One woman died after two attackers, believed to be wearing a military-style uniforms, opened fire with a submachine gun in the city of Halle, eastern Germany.

A grenade was also thrown into the Jewish cemetery before the attackers fled, Bild reported.

Several others were wounded and rushed to hospital.

Police have since arrested one suspect, and told people to 'stay alert' while the manhunt continues.

They aren’t paying jizya directly, but this is the modern version of a Jew tax. Where were their outside guards?

Deutsche Welle is behind on reporting the latest developments, but adds:

Shots were also reported in the neighboring town of Landsberg following the shooting in Halle, but police did not immediately provide further details or say whether the two shootings were related.

Officials said that police protection near synagogues was being strengthened in Halle, Leipzig and Dresden for the time being. In Leipzig, major commemorations are planned for this evening to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the rallies that eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Man who grew breasts from autism drug awarded £6,550,000,000 payout
[METRO] A man has been awarded a huge payout after drugs he took for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder made him grow breasts. Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals were blamed for failing to warn people of the side effect of taking the psychiatric drug Risperdal.

Nicholas Murray took the case to a court in Philadelphia where a jury ruled that J&J must pay $8 billion (£6.55 billion) to him. He took the drug as a child to help him sleep because he suffered as a result of his autism.

However, the company challenged that ruling saying it was ’grossly disproportionate’ compared to the initial award of $680,000 (£557,000) in 2015. J&J said in a statement: ’The company is confident (the ruling) will be overturned and will be immediately moving to set aside this excessive and unfounded verdict.’

FBI's Foreign Surveillance Program Violated Americans' Civil Liberties, FISA Court Finds
[National Review] The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has ruled that an FBI program intended to target foreign suspects violated Americans’ constitutional right to privacy by collecting the personal information of American citizens along with the foreign targets of the surveillance.

According to the ruling, tens of thousands of searches the FBI made of raw intelligence databases from 2017 to 2018 were illegal, the Wall Street Journal first reported. The searches involved personal data including emails and telephone numbers of private citizens.

"The court...finds that the FBI’s querying procedures and minimization procedures are not consistent with the requirements of the Fourth Amendment," wrote U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in the ruling, which was released Tuesday in partially redacted form.

Boasberg said the Trump administration failed to persuade the court that adjusting the program to more efficiently protect American citizens’ privacy would impede the FBI’s ability to counter threats.

As soon as those agents blockading a place of business closed ranks to prevent passage, the throat punch should be allowed, as customer approach the path with the intention of getting a damn burger, while the agents approached the path with the intention of physical altercation.

#14  PG&E has been negligent for a long, long time in its maintenance of power lines and the towers that support them. From what I've heard, some of those towers are over 100 years old.

It was originally built in 1919. What failed on PG&E tower at heart of Camp Fire probe?

I mean, it's shameful that they have to take the precaution of shutting off the power but if they didn't and there was another fire like the Camp Fire it would be far worse. You can blame PG&E all you want and you are right to do so. But the California Public Utilities Commission must also accept its share of the blame and that, of course, goes back to the politicians who appoint CPUC commissioners.

In the more recently built parts of California cities, telephone and power lines are buried. Well, you know, those telephone poles and all those wires are unsightly. But in wilderness areas, especially where Santa Ana winds blow up to 60 mph and proper forest management has been set aside in deference to Gaia, burying power lines might be the way to go except for the fact that nobody wants to pay for it.

In the meantime, if you want to live out in the boondocks, you might have to accept some inconveniences.

Shakil Afridi: The doctor who helped the CIA find Bin Laden case to be heard
[BBC] A Pakistani court is due to hear an appeal to free a doctor accused of helping the US track down al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

The Peshawar High Court will hear Shakil Afridi's case on Wednesday, the first time it will be heard in an open court in Pakistan.

He was never formally charged for his role in the 2011 operation to hunt down and kill the world's most-wanted man.

Dr Afridi has always argued that he was denied a fair trial.

His imprisonment caused outrage and saw the US cut federal aid to Pakistan by $33m (£27m) - $1m for every year of his jail sentence.

US President Donald Trump promised in his 2016 election campaign that he would get Dr Afridi released in "two minutes" if elected - but that never happened.

#4  Their previous law minister, Zahid Hamilton said: “Afridi worked against the law and our national interest, and the Pakistan government has repeatedly been telling the United States that under our law he committed a crime and was facing the law.”

The unwritten law he had violated in Pakistain was aiding US intelligence to bring to justice a Pak abetted terrorist, who was evading justice after successfully killing thousands of US citizens. Pakistain couldn't be gladder just then when the schweinhund was living off farm chickens in Abbitabad, but this guy had to ruin their fun by aiding the Americans in getting to him.

This year Imran Khan proposed a swap for Aafia Siddiqui self admittedly Al-Qaeda, also dubbed the 'Grey Lady of Bagram' who shot at American soldiers in Afghanistan. It proves beyond doubt that Pak is the clearing house for all sasquatch groups in Asia.

Former CIA Station Chief: Attempted Coup Against President Trump Looks Like CIA Operation Led by John Brennan (VIDEO)
[Gateway Pundit] In an exclusive interview with RAIR Foundation USA retired CIA Station Chief Brad Johnson claims the attempted coup against Donald Trump looks like a CIA operation.

Johnson even suggests that former CIA Chief John Brennan is behind it.

Brennan added, "This is the last big gasp so they’re pulling out all the stops. You can see who the desperate people are... We just saw former CIA Director John Brennan out on national news saying, "Please anybody else out there who can be a whistleblower please step forward. Nows the time."

On Monday night former State Department whistleblower Peter Van Buren spoke with Tucker Carlson on the current Democrat-Deep State coordinated attack to remove President Trump in a political coup.

Peter described the current accusations of the left as a "three way pitch-and-toss" between the Democrat Party, the liberal media and these deep state whistleblowers.

Van Buren then alleged that the second whistleblower is actually an accomplice with the first whistleblower.

Economy
Fed's Powell says U.S. expansion is 'sustainable'
DENVER (Reuters) - Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell on Tuesday flagged openness to further rate cuts to fend off global economic risks, repeating that the central bank will act "as appropriate" amid an economy that he said is likely to continue to expand.

"This feels very sustainable," Powell said in Denver at the annual meeting of the National Association of Business Economics.

"Clearly things are slowing a bit," he said, noting that it’s normal for long expansions to have such periods. Twice in the 1990s, he said, the economy similarly downshifted, only to gain steam once the Fed cut interest rates a few times.

The Fed two interest rates this year, in July and September, were made in that spirit and have helped maintain a "favorable" outlook for jobs and inflation, Powell said. The U.S. economy "may just be gathering itself - there’s no reason why the expansion can’t continue," he added.

Whistleblower had 'professional' tie to 2020 Democratic candidate
[Washington Examiner] In an Aug. 26 letter, the Intelligence Community's inspector general, Michael Atkinson, wrote that the anonymous whistleblower who set off the Trump-Ukraine impeachment fight showed "some indicia of an arguable political bias ... in favor of a rival political candidate."

A few weeks later, news reports said the whistleblower's possible bias was that he is a registered Democrat. That was all. Incredulous commentary suggested that Republicans who were pushing the bias talking point were so blinded by their own partisanship that they saw simple registration with the Democratic Party as evidence of wrongdoing.

"Give me a break!" tweeted whistleblower lawyer Mark Zaid. "Bias? Seriously?"

Now, however, there is word of more evidence of possible bias on the whistleblower's part. Under questioning from Republicans during last Friday's impeachment inquiry interview with Atkinson, the inspector general revealed that the whistleblower's possible bias was not that he was simply a registered Democrat. It was that he had a significant tie to one of the Democratic presidential candidates currently vying to challenge President Trump in next year's election.

"The IG said [the whistleblower] worked or had some type of professional relationship with one of the Democratic candidates," said one person with knowledge of what was said.

"The IG said the whistleblower had a professional relationship with one of the 2020 candidates," said another person with knowledge of what was said.

"What [Atkinson] said was that the whistleblower self-disclosed that he was a registered Democrat and that he had a prior working relationship with a current 2020 Democratic presidential candidate," said a third person with knowledge of what was said.

All three sources said Atkinson did not identify the Democratic candidate with whom the whistleblower had a connection. It is unclear what the working or professional relationship between the two was.

Europe
Romania to open first national Holocaust museum
[DW] Romania had long swept under the rug its role in the Holocaust. The museum is meant to educate and raise questions about the country's role in the deaths of Jews and Roma during the time it was allied with Nazi Germany.

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday approved the creation of the country's first Holocaust museum in Bucharest aimed at informing the public and shedding light on the Nazi-allied regime's role during World War II.

"The history of Jewish Romanians, their contribution to the country's development and the tragedy experienced during the war... represent a legacy which was hidden from us for decades," Iohannis said Tuesday at a ceremony attended by Holocaust survivors.

"This museum will not so much bring answers as raise more questions," he added.

"The Romanian state demonstrates consistency in meeting the goal aimed at recovering the memory of the Holocaust, strengthening the education about the Holocaust and combating anti-Semitism," Iohannis said.

DNI Declassifies FISA Judge James Boasberg 2018 Ruling – FBI Conducted "Tens of Thousands" of Unauthorized NSA Database Queries
There is a lot to unpack in a decision today by the Director of National Intelligence to declassify (with redactions) a 2018 FISA court ruling about ongoing unauthorized database search queries by FBI agents/"contractors" in the period covering 2017/2018.

BACKGROUND: In April 2017 the DNI released a FISA report written by Presiding Judge Rosemary Collery that showed massive abuse, via unauthorized searches of the NSA database, in the period of November 2015 through May 2016. Judge Collyer’s report specifically identified search query increases tied to the 2016 presidential primary. Two years of research identified this process as the DOJ/FBI and IC using the NSA database to query information related to political candidates, specifically Donald Trump.

Now we fast-forward to Judge Boasberg in a similar review (full pdf below), looking at the time-period of 2017 through March 2018.

The timing here is an important aspect.

It is within this time-period where ongoing DOJ and FBI activity transfers from the Obama administration (Collyer report) into the Trump administration (Boasberg report).

It cannot be overemphasized as you read the Boasberg opinion, or any reporting on the Boasberg opinion, that officials within DOJ and FBI are/were on a continuum. Meaning the "small group" activity didn't stop after the election but rather continued with the Mueller and Weissmann impeachment agenda.

Remember, the 2016 ‘insurance policy' was to hand Mueller the 2016 FBI investigation so they could turn it into the 2017 special counsel investigation. Mueller, Weissmann and the group then used the ‘Steele Dossier' as the cornerstone for the special counsel review. The goal of the Mueller investigation was to construct impeachment via obstruction. The same players transferred from "crossfire hurricane" into the Mueller ‘obstruction‘ plan.

Within Judge Boasberg's review of the 2017 activity he outlines an identical set of FISA violations from within the FBI units and "contractors" as initially outlined by Judge Collyer a year earlier. Judge Boasberg wrote his opinion in October 2018 and that opinion was declassified today (October 8th, 2019). Boasberg is reviewing 2017 through March 2018.

Germany's Horst Seehofer warns of 'refugee wave' bigger than in 2015
[DW] German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has called on the EU to do more to support Turkey and avoid another refugee crisis. If nothing is done, he said, the crisis may become "even greater than four years ago."

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has warned of a larger influx of refugees than that seen in Europe in 2015. He made the statement during an official visit to Greece.

Traveling with incoming European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Seehofer also said the EU had to do more to support Turkey so that refugees did not attempt the often dangerous crossing to Greece.

"We have to help our European partners even more in patrolling the EU's external borders; we have left them alone for too long," Seehofer told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, referring not only to Greece but also to Spain and Italy. "If we don't, we will once again see a refugee wave like in 2015 ‐ maybe even greater than four years ago."

Seehofer said Europe had to avoid a crisis for which it was unprepared, as it had been in 2015. He clarified that he had "the full support" of Chancellor Angela Merkel, with whom he has publicly differed on refugee policy in the past.

#13  Me from Monday:

My prediction, and this is a long shot, is that regardless, Turkey will initiate the journey of some 20,000 refugees, or even as few at 5,000, enough to be large enough to not be bothered as they walk to a major European city, preferably with some symbolism. Say, Vienna. Only instead of Kara Mustafa Pasha and a dredge of wailing imams leading the horde, it will be Doctors without Borders, the video production arm of Red Crescent, and the fokkin Pope, and everyone who asks where the food and winter clothing is coming from gets branded a white nationalist or Nazi.

How many Bearded Man events in Germany the last 72 hours?

Turkey needs immediate help from the EU or else?

Merkel wetting her beak?

Seehofer said Europe had to avoid a crisis for which it was unprepared, as it had been in 2015. He clarified that he had "the full support" of Chancellor Angela Merkel, with whom he has publicly differed on refugee policy in the past.

That doesn't sound reassuring, that sounds ominous.

*Dons elemental chapeau of aluminum*
"Dear Poland. If we think for a second you in any ways assist Brexit, we will march this new wave right across your border with the Holy Pope Himself in the lead."

And there is just enough time left in the campaigning season to get somewhere, then camp for the winter. Unless you haters want babies dredging the Danube to make mud huts.

Arrest Made in Death of Amber Guyger Trial Witness
[Breitbart] An arrest has been made in the murder of Amber Guyger witness Joshua Brown.

Brown testified in the trial that resulted in the conviction of Guyger, the former Dallas Police Officer who is now in prison for the murder of Botham Jean.

USA Today reported that Brown was found "shot to death" in a parking lot Friday, and NBC News reports that a suspect in Brown’s death was arrested today.

The suspect, 20-year-old Jacquerious Mitchell, says Brown was allegedly killed as a result of an altercation in a drug deal gone bad. Mitchell claims 22-year-old Thaddeous Green shot Brown, fatally wounding him.

Police suspect a third man, 32-year-old Michael Mitchell, was the getaway driver after the alleged shooting.

Green and Mitchell are still on the run and police consider both to be "armed and dangerous."

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, together with a number of community leaders, "had called for an independent investigation into Brown’s death and the Dallas police department" prior to today’s arrest. There is no word yet on whether the independent investigation will still be sought.

While a Kurdish-led operation earlier this year saw the death of IS's territorial caliphate, the organization isn't dead and sleeper cells have been active in SDF-held areas and in Syria's vast desert where they continue to hit regime forces with deadly attacks and ambushes.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
What to expect from Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report on alleged FISA abuses
[Washington Examiner] For the past several months, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has been looking into allegations that the FBI and DOJ abused the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to launch a probe into a Trump campaign aide Carter Page and kickstart the Russia investigation.

That report could be released within the next two weeks, according to Rep. John Ratcliffe, who sits on both the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees.

Horowitz’s report is important because it could confirm what many critics have been saying for years: The origins of the investigation into President Trump’s 2016 campaign were unreliable, and the intelligence bureaucrats we trust with our national security have been unaccountable for too long.

Hopefully, Horowitz’s report will shed some light on three important allegations against the FBI and DOJ:

  • The FISA court turned down the FBI and DOJ’s original request to surveil Page. Because FISA warrants remain hidden and uncontested, they require a higher burden of proof than typical criminal warrants. The court determined the FBI had not met its standards and turned the agency away. It wasn’t until the FBI bolstered its original request with details from Christopher Steele’s dossier that the court granted its request.

  • In its second application for a FISA warrant, the FBI assured the court Steele was a reliable source despite the fact that not a single U.S. intelligence agency had verified his claims. Another important detail the FBI neglected to tell the court was that the agency had fired Steele six months earlier for misconduct.

  • The FBI also conveniently forgot to tell the FISA court that the Steele dossier it had used as evidence in its application for a warrant had been bought and paid for by key Democratic firm Perkins Coie, the Democratic National Committee’s law firm, and Fusion GPS, an opposition research firm used by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

If these allegations are indeed true, then it is also true that the FBI intentionally withheld and lied about information in order to investigate Trump’s campaign. And if the FBI did indeed lie, the origins of the Russia investigation can rightly be decried as irresponsible and unnecessary.

FISA court abuses do indeed exist. And they point to a disturbing rot in the justice system: unelected political appointees taking power into their own hands to surveil and investigate political opponents topics under the guise of national security. This goes beyond Trump, Mueller, and the rest. This is about a total lack of transparency and accountability in a government that is supposed to work for us. We need answers, and it looks like we’re about to get them.

NYT Columnist: Yes, There's a Deep State and It's Full of People Doing Important Work to Restrain Trump
[Townhall] New York Times columnist James Stewart is out with a new book about the "deep state." Its content is much different from other books on the topic, most of which condemn politically motivated government bureaucrats. Instead, it celebrates a federal bureaucracy dedicated to halting or slowing down President Trump's agenda.

During an interview with the Today Show, Stewart said he interviewed fired FBI Director James Comey and argued the deep state is an important group of people "dedicated to the constitution."

"You meet these characters in my book and the fact is, in a sense, he’s right. There is a deep state. There is a bureaucracy in our country who has pledged to respect the constitution, respect the rule of law. They do not work for the President, they work for the American people," Stewart said. "And as Comey told me in my book, thank goodness for that because they are protecting the constitution and the people when individuals...they restrain them from crossing the boundaries of all."

Did James Clapper Just Admit President Obama Directed Him to Go After the Trump Campaign?
[Townhall] As U.S. Attorney John Durham continues his criminal investigation into the origins of the government's targeting of the 2016 Trump campaign, former Obama administration intelligence officials are denying any wrong doing and justifying their actions.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is arguing he was concerned about the Russians interfering in the election, which is why his agency gathered "information." During a recent interview with CNN, Clapper admitted he was simply following orders from the "commander-in-chief," who had ordered intelligence agencies to do so.

"I don't know. I don’t think there was any wrongdoing," Clapper said. "My main concern was with the Russians and the threat posed by the Russians to our very political fabric and ugh, the message I'm getting from all of this is apparently what we were supposed to have done was to ignore the Russian interference, ignore the Russian meddling and the threat that it poses to us and oh by the way, blown off what the then commander-in-chief, President Obama, told us to do, which was to assemble all of the reporting we could."

’s Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, rulers have been waging a "secret war" against followers of the Islamic State and other Salafist groups in the Strip, according to a recent report in the Lebanese daily Al Akhbar.

Officials told the pro-Hezbollah daily Thursday that Hamas in recent months has arrested four Salafist cells in Gaza that were planning to carry out attacks on the group’s security forces and brass hats. Hamas forces also confiscated weapons, including long-range rockets capable of hitting major cities in Israel.

The effort was said to have been launched in August, after a jacket wallah allegedly linked to IS killed a Hamas guard in southern Gaza along the border with Egypt, in a rare attack against the ruling group.

The paper said the cells were looking for opportunities to carry out suicide kabooms against the terror group that rules Gaza while simultaneously seeking to ramp up tensions with Israel. The Salafist cells were allegedly responsible for launching long-range rockets at Tel Aviv during fragile ceasefires between Hamas and Israel, and were receiving funding for their activities from unknown foreign sources.

Gaza officials said they believed the young fighters were radicalized online, and were trying to provoke Israel into launching a broad military offensive in the Strip that would cripple its Hamas rulers.

Hamas, an Islamist terror group avowedly seeking to destroy Israel, has run Gaza for over a decade but it has been challenged by small, still more hardline factions, some of them inspired by IS, that advocate a stricter, Salafist interpretation of Islam.

Last year, the Islamic State’s Sinai branch declared war on Hamas, calling the group and its supporters "apostates."

In recent months, the groups have launched sporadic rocket attacks into Israel in defiance of an informal truce agreed to by Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is widely seen as wanting to avoid an escalation in Gaza, but he has faced calls for strong action from his electoral opponents.

3 Kasur men arrested for alleged sexual assault of teenage boy for nearly three years
[DAWN] Police have arrested three suspects over the alleged sexual assault, filming, and blackmail of a teenage boy in Pattoki city of Punjab's Kasur district, officials said on Tuesday.

The three suspects were nominated in a First Information Report (FIR) on Sunday and were arrested by a police team the next day.

Two others are also nominated in the police report. According to Kasur SP Investigation Mirza Abdul Quddoos Baig, police efforts are underway to arrest the remaining two suspects.

According to the FIR, registered on a complaint by the victim's father, the teenage boy had been "continually subjected to sodomy at gunpoint and blackmail by each of the five suspects over the past two-and-a-half years".
No wonder the Rotherham lot were comfortable doing what they did for decades...
It is not clear whether the five suspects had any link with each other. According to police, the suspects would not extort money from the victim, as had been the case when a child pornography ring was unearthed four years ago in Kasur's Hussain Khanwala village.

The boy claimed that the suspects would film the act and would threaten him to comply with their requests or risk the footage being uploaded on social media.

According to police officials, one of the accused has also been named in a separate FIR filed on Monday by another complainant.

In the other FIR, the complainant has claimed that his brother was also subjected to sexual assault by the same suspect.

The suspect ‐ a friend of the complainant ‐ had lured the victim away under the guise of "going to a birthday party" three months ago, according to the police report.

The victim was then raped and threatened to keep quiet about the incident "for his own good".

has sent 7,500 members of its special unit law enforcement force to Iraq, according to the force’s commander, amid accusations from Iraqi protesters that Iranians have been directly involved in the crackdown on the protests in Iraq.

Iran is sending these forces to provide security for the Arbaeen Pilgrimage, a Shia religious ceremony, claimed the commander of the "special unit law enforcement force" Gen. Hassan Karami, reported the semi-official Mehr news agency on Monday.

Iran also has undercover agents in the crowds to control the situation, he said.

The special unit law enforcement force is responsible for dealing with protests in the country, and it was heavily involved in the crackdown on the protests that broke out in Iran between December 2017 and January 2018 in over 100 cities.

During those protests, 30 Iranians were killed and over 5000 were arrested, 50 of whom were tortured to death.

The thousands of Iranian forces sent to Iraq have been sent to help suppress the current protests in the country, say some observers.

The Iraqi protesters have accused Iran of being directly involved in the crackdown of their protests.

An Iraqi protester interviewed by Rooters on October 3 said that Farsi-speaking Iranians, not Iraqi forces, have been shooting at people during Iraq’s recent deadly protests.

"There is no work, you come to protest, they fire at you. Live gunfire. They are all Iranian speaking in Farsi. You want to speak to them they answer in Farsi. The Iraqis would not fire at you," the Iraqi protester told Rooters.

At least 110 people have been killed across Iraq and more than 6,000 maimed, with protesters demanding the removal of Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi and a government they accuse of corruption.

Iraqis have also been shouting slogans against the Iranian presence in their country. Videos of the protests on social media show protesters tearing images of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

EU observers regret Tunisia ‘silent campaign’ ahead of vote
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An EU observer mission on Tuesday regretted the lack of campaigning for Tunisia’s presidential run-off between a candidate detained in prison and a rival who has called off his own canvassing for votes.

Business tycoon Nabil Karoui has been behind bars since late August - just before campaigning began for the first round - in a money laundering probe, but won through to the run-off on Sunday.

He will run against conservative law professor Kais Saied, who announced last Saturday that he would stop his campaign to keep a level playing field with his adversary.

"What we are seeing is an unprecedented situation - a campaign of silence instead of debate - because one cannot campaign and the other does not want to," said Fabio Massimo Castaldo, head of the EU observer mission.

The mission, as well as many Tunisian political bodies and officials, has called for Karoui to be able to campaign freely, but courts have rejected several appeals for his release.

Nazih Souei, a lawyer for Karoui, told AFP on Tuesday that his client has lodged a suit to postpone the second round until he is free and able to campaign.

"We still hope there will be opportunities, ways of allowing each candidate to express his view," Castaldo said, while expressing support for the Tunisian judiciary, told a news conference.

"Our concern is that every voter has access to the positions of the different candidates so as to shape an informed opinion," he added.

AJK premier urges JKLF protesters to call off march to LoC as 'purpose largely met'
[DAWN] Azad Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
(AJK) Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider on Tuesday urged the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)-led marchers to call off their march as the purpose of their programme had been "largely met".

The JKLF-led march had come to a halt some eight kilometres before the Line of Control (LoC) in Chakothi sector on Sunday due to the blockade of Muzaffarabad-Srinagar road at the hands of the administration.

Ever since then, the marchers had been staging a sit-in under large tents, erected on the main road before the blockade on Sunday night.

On Monday, JKLF leaders had renewed their appeal to the AJK government to remove the obstacles and allow the marchers to cross the ceasefire line (LoC) or else they would continue their sit-in at this place for "an indefinite period."

As an alternative, the JKLF had demanded of the AJK government to bring any special representative of the UN Secretary General as well as representatives of the P5 members of Security Council to whom they could present their charter of demands.

In his cautious response, Prime Minister Haider said: "Those who have gone there (towards the LoC) are our brothers. They have succeeded in letting the world know what they wanted it to know. I hope they will return after they have shown their resolve and commitment to the whole world."

"Such things (march towards the LoC) would continue to happen repeatedly. Eventually, this ill-omened line has to vanish, either in a peaceful way or otherwise. People should make preparations for it from now on," he said.

"God willing this is bound to happen, sooner or later," he added.

Haider stressed that there should not be any conceptual chaos in the ranks of Kashmiris.

"We all should raise one slogan and make one demand, that is, plebiscite," he said.

Al-Sarraj: Forces attacking Tripoli responsible for terrorists' reemergence
[Libya Observer] The Head of the Presidential Council Fayez al-Sarraj said terrorist cells have stepped up their activities over the last few months due to the recurrent military operations in different areas in Libya, adding that they have taken advantage of the security vacuum caused by ongoing fighting in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
"The attacking forces (Khalifa Haftar

He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. He added that the security arrangements started by the Interior Ministry before Tripoli offensive are still ongoing, saying the safety of people is a priority for his government.

He hailed the acts of the Libyan Army forces and backup forces whom he said are defending building the civilian state. He also praised the police force for their work.

"Libyans revolted against tyranny, totalitarianism, dictatorship and for a civilian and democratic state. We will continue to achieve the goals and no party can defeat the will of the people." al-Sarraj said.

He reiterated that they will keep fighting till the attacking forces are defeated or retreated to their previous positions as before April 04, stressing the need for returning to the political process under the auspices of the UN, which he said goes along with his initiative for a national conference that sets up a constitutional basis for elections.

"There's no political dialogue with those who call for dictatorship and committed war crimes." He explained.

He promised to improve public services for Libyans by expanding expenditure in education, health, transportation and construction sectors.

#2  It's a feature not a bug. In the Ardennes in '44, Tet in '68, and the 50th Maintenance Company In Nasiriyah, Iraq in '03, there were no cooks, clerks, or mechanics, just plain infantrymen.

This issue has been a big coverup by the command chain for over a couple generations unwilling to face the truth but to follow political orders. Every company CO and 1st Sgt has had to live with first hand, double standards.

It's also an indictment of trying to make one size fit all. Look there are auxiliary functions and direct military functions. The institutional bias has been trying to force the military structure on things that do not fit nicely into it's organization. Quit trying to make it something it is not. It's already being done through the work around of civilianizing and contracting many support functions out.

Combat is Darwin writ large. The enemy doesn't care one bit about 'political correctness', just victory.

#8  I have first hand experience of something along these lines albeit on a smaller scale. My federal law enforcement organization was required, by law, to establish physical fitness standards. We hired an outside consultant to survey our agents and develop a job task-based test. I was part of 30 agent group of lab rats. We spent 2 weeks learning the skills and practicing testing protocols. On game day - we all took the test. Every female in the group failed - about 7. Last I ever heard of that test.

Yes. And very few women have the gross strength of men. In my youth we gymnastics team girls did 60 army push-ups and 120 tuck sit-ups (much harder than those sissy bent-knee things men do) to warm up before working on our routines, which put me at the far end of the female fitness curve. But Mr. Wife could bench press double what I could.

No problemo! We'll just do like the cops & firefighters and decide that being big and strong really isn't part of the job description. With that out of the way and a little paper-shuffling, we can get more women into the upper ranks and meet that quota too. Wins for everyone!
Posted by: SteveS || 10/09/2019 11:40 Comments || Top||

#16  The long-term plunge in readiness across the military (across both genders and all services) makes me think that this is less a part of gender and more a major institutional failure (with women failing at a much higher rate because they are naturally physically not as able to pass these tests). I mean, this is the same military that wasn't training people how to steer and had ships crashing into each other with an alarming regularity at sea. The fact that the IDF, as noted, hasn't had the same problems, is probably because the constant alert level and general need for soldiers is so much higher. They can't afford to act as stupidly as our bureaucrats.

#22  I'd like to point out that a military exists for the very specific purpose of warfare. It's not an expansive corporation of depts and sub-depts that should keep re-inventing itself to suit the employment policies of socially aware governments. Neither is it a place to fulfill one's ambitions of mobility into 'male bastions'.

Compromise the fighting arms with loose links and the security and defense integrity of your country is fucked. There are practical problems with women serving in combat roles, sometimes even as assist in the field.

In my own little view, men exist so women don't have to fight. Of course, because the world is beset by armed hedonism, cruelty and criminality there must be a training regimen and compulsory service like Israel does, and nations that are challenged with malignancies must recruit everyone who volunteers, and my greatest respect to the gals who make the cut.

Algiers police prevent weekly student demo for first time
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Algerian police on Tuesday prevented a weekly protest by students in the capital for the first time since an anti-regime movement erupted into the streets in February, AFP journalists and witnesses said.

They forcefully barred access to a square in central Algiers and managed to disperse the demonstrators after several forays, making at least 14 arrests, an action group for the release of detainees said.

"Police brutality reached a level not seen since the start of the demonstrations, according to several students," El-Watan newspaper wrote on its website.

The prevention of the student march - a rally that takes place each Tuesday - follows a wave of arrests of journalists, activists and figures opposed to a December 12 presidential vote to replace longtime leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika
...10th president-for-life of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and served on his third or four terms. When he announced for the fifth, or maybe it was the sixth, visibly doddering, a grateful nation rose up in its wrath and threw him out...
who resigned in April after mass protests.

Security forces have toughened their line against protests - including much larger rallies held each Friday, extending well beyond the student community - since the election date was confirmed in a mid-September announcement.

Protesters have been demanding political reforms and the removal of regime insiders - including Gaid Salah himself - before any vote.

French PM questions US hesitations over northeast Syria
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] La Belle France’s prime minister defended his country’s policy in northeastern Syria on Tuesday saying that, unlike US hesitations, Gay Paree’ priority remained to defeat ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
and preserve Kurdish-led forces fighting the terrorist organization.

The US decision to withdraw from northeastern Syria leaving The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
to launch an offensive against Kurdish snuffies in the region has rattled allies, including La Belle France, one of Washington’s main partners in the US-led coalition fighting ISIS.

Responding in parliament to criticism of the French government from some opposition politicians for not publicly defending Kurdish forces in the face of a possible Ottoman Turkish offensive, Edouard Philippe said Gay Paree had not wavered on its policy unlike Washington.

"The fight against ISIS (ISIS) is not over and continues alongside the (Kurdish-led) Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)," Phillipe told politicians.

"Saying things with constancy and coherence is preferable to reacting to obvious hesitations from certain players notably our American friends," Philippe said, alluding to differences in the US administration.

1.070 teachers sacked over Brotherhood links: Education minister
[AlAhram] Education minister Tarek Shawki said on Monday that 1,070 teachers were fired due to their ties with the terrorist Moslem Brüderbund group.

Speaking at a presser, Shawky said the move aimed at "purging the ministry off any [extremist] thought that could affect students."

The minister noted that a presser would be held on Tuesday to announce the new criteria of appointing teachers.

He said an e-portal would be launched on Wednesday for those seeking jobs at public and private schools.

The ministry will hire 120,000 teachers on a contractual basis for a year, the minister said, adding that the contracts could then be renewed every three years and will cost the ministry EGP 1.6 billion.

Kurdish YPG Revolutionaries - Who they are - Insider Account
[MotherJones] An anarchist revolution - and the Americans volunteering to defend it.

This story is part of Shane Bauer’s investigation into what Americans‐troops, militia volunteers, ISIS recruits, and others‐are doing in Syria. Bauer, who lived in Syria in the late 2000s, traveled to the Kurdish and Syrian rebel-controlled parts of the country in 2018. The area he visited is where Kurdish fighters are now preparing to make their last stand after President Donald Trump announced that the United States would not stand in the way of a Turkish offensive against them.
It seems to be an account of a trip and a talk with the people fighting for the PKK right now. Whether it's written to give an impression of the Kurds being 'not worth it', or if it's true, it's still a good read. And maybe justification for washing your hands off. Antifa in Syria ? Grizzly Bear Attack in Montana Stopped with 9mm Pistols (graphic wounds depicted)
Arizona -(Ammoland.com)- ‐ On 16 September 2019, Chris Gregersen and Donivan Cambell were bow hunting elk in Montana, in the Gravelly Mountains, when they were attacked by a grizzly bear. They had gone out for an afternoon hunt, and had hunted up steep drainage, climbed the opposite slope, and had been calling for elk on the opposite side of the ridge with a bugle call.

They were returning to their truck and camp. They stopped calling on the top of the ridge, crested the ridge, and were on a steep downward slope, moving toward the creek at the bottom, on an old game trail. There was no cell service in the area.

The weather was clear, in the 50s, with a slight breeze. It was 6:30 p.m. The sun was low in the sky. They wanted to get back before dark.

In addition to their archery equipment, both men had 9 mm pistols. Chris Gregersen had a Glock 43. Donivan Campbell had a Sig Sauer P320. Both guns were loaded with full metal jacketed (FMJ) cartridges.

It would. You would neither see or hear what the bear is doing to you.

I was watching a bear chow down on some elk when some damned fool approached it with one of them air horns. Didn't bother the bear at all until the fool got too close for good table manners. The bear, already full and gone back for thirds, jogged off.

Bangladeshi shaved wife’s head after finding hair in food
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Bangladeshi who forcibly shaved his wife’s head after finding a hair in his breakfast has been arrested, police said Tuesday, as rights groups warned violence against women was rising in the country.

Police raided a village in the northwestern district of Joypurhat and arrested Bablu Mondal, 35, after villagers told officers about the incident.

"He found a human hair on the rice and milk breakfast his wife prepared for him," local police chief Shahriar Khan told AFP.

"He became angry seeing the hair and blamed the wife. He then took a blade and forcibly shaved the head of the wife," he said.

Khan said Bablu was charged with "voluntarily causing grievous hurt", an offence that carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in jail, and also for "outraging the modesty" of his 23-year-old wife.

Activists say the incident highlights growing repression of women in Bangladesh despite laws to protect them from abuse and sexual assault.

According to local rights group Ain o Salish Kendra, there were an average three rapes a day in the first six months of the year.

The organization said of the 630 women raped between January and June, 37 were killed after the assault while seven others took their own life.

There were also 105 instances of attempted rape.

In April, massive protests broke out after a 19-year-old schoolgirl was burned to death on the orders of her head teacher after she reported him for sexually harassing her.

Taliban: Claims about death of Al Qaeda leader in Helmand are false
Does he mean Asim Umar, chief of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) whose death was reported yesterday, or someone else?
[ALEMARAHENGLISH] Officials of the stooge Kabul administration claimed to have killed a leader associated with Al Qaeda organization during the raid and bombing of a wedding in Musa Kala district, Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
We categorically reject this claim by Kabul officials and consider it a part of enemy fabricated propaganda.

Truth of the matter remains that the said operation in Musa Kala district only caused heavy civilian losses and tens of ordinary civilian Afghans including those participating in a wedding ceremony were martyred and maimed.

The enemy is trying to use such claims to conceal the crime it perpetrated in Musa Kala.

Florida man accused of enticing alligator to bite him, pouring beer in its mouth
[NEWS-PRESS] A Hobe Sound man is accused of enticing an alligator to bite his arm and pouring beer into the reptile's mouth after his friend caught the animal.

Timothy Kepke, 27, of the 6200 block of Southeast Croton Place in Hobe Sound and Noah Osborne, 22, of the 3000 block of South Kanner Highway in Stuart were both arrested Oct. 3 on one felony charge each of unlawfully taking an alligator.

In August, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission got a complaint about Kepke holding an alligator and enticing the reptile to bite his right forearm and then pouring beer in the animal's mouth, according to a FWC report.

After the beer is poured, the alligator aggressively reacts. The interaction was filmed, records show. A request for the video was not fulfilled Monday.

Officers said on Sept. 17 they went to Kepke's home, where Kepke told them he was the person in the video.

Kepke told officers Osborne caught the reptile with his bare hands along Ranchwood Street in Palm City about 10 p.m. Aug. 26. After Osborne caught the alligator, Kepke told officers he enticed it to bite him and then poured beer into its mouth.

The pair then released the gator alive, Kepke told officers.

Kepke also told officers he had a couple of beers, but wasn't drunk when the incident happened.
Most people couldn't do something that stoopid cold sober.

‘Chelsea bomber’ convicted in attempted murder trial stemming from New Jersey shootout with police
[PIX11] A New Jersey man already serving a life term for planting bombs in New York City has been convicted of attempted murder and assault stemming from a shootout with police three years ago.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi
...the naturalized Afghan known wolf (who came as a result of chain migration, after his father received asylum) who didn’t die a martyr in a hail of bullets as planned, after planting bombs in Manhattan and New Jersey. He was inspired by ISIS and Al Qaeda, and trained in a Taliban feeder madrassa in Pakistan. After his second stay there, his father reported him to the FBI, who, sadly, were not suffciently impressed. In the early days of the investigation his name was given as Ahmad Khan Rahami and Ahmad Khan Rahmani...
sat quietly during the reading of the verdicts Tuesday

Rahimi engaged police in a shootout after they found him in Linden, New Jersey. He fired at several officers and was maimed himself.

The jury deliberated over two days before convicting the Afghanistan-born naturalized U.S. citizen of all 30 counts.

Rahimi’s attorney argued his client acted in self-defense.

A New York jury convicted Rahimi last year of setting off a bomb, injuring 30 people. A second bomb failed to go off.

Rahimi also is charged in New Jersey with placing bombs in two locations.

Welcome to Seattle, capital of revolving-door crime
[Seattle Times] If you are a petty thief who wants to support a drug habit through stealing, or if you just feel inclined to grab things off a shelf and exit a store without paying, Seattle is your kind of town.

A study done on behalf of local businesses and neighborhood groups indicates that nearly half of the criminals caught ripping off small businesses never face charges and that four in 10 of those cases that are brought to court remain unresolved after two years. Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes says he cannot effectively deal with the wave of property crime unless he gets more staff and a bigger budget, although, in past years, prosecution rates for these kinds of misdemeanors were much higher even with fewer city lawyers and less money.

There seems to be no sense of urgency at City Hall. Meanwhile, the thieves keep cycling through the system only to get back out on the street where they can continue breaking into cars and shoplifting with little worry that they might have to pay the consequences of their acts.

Cyprus’ president condemns Turkey's ‘unacceptable actions’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
has carried out "unacceptable actions" and Cyprus will pursue diplomatic action to put an end to Ottoman Turkish attacks, said Cyprus' President Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday.

Anastasiades was attending the Cairo Summit in Egypt, where Cyprus, Greece, and Egypt reaffirmed their ties.

The Cypriot President also stressed the importance of the territorial integrity of Libya and Syria and the need for the establishment of a Paleostinian state, and discussed the issue of illegal immigration and their economic consequences.

Anastasiades called on the international community to exert more efforts to combat terrorism and enhance energy security, stressing that the investment mechanism between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece should be encouraged.

UN may run out of money by end of the month: Guterres
[DAWN] The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
is running a deficit of $230 million, Secretary General António Guterres
...Portuguese politician and diplomat, ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously, he was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015. He was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and was the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. He served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. In both a 2012 and 2014 poll, the Portuguese public ranked him as the best Prime Minister of the previous 30 years...
said on Monday, and may run out of money by the end of October.

In a letter intended for the 37,000 employees at the UN secretariat and obtained by AFP, Guterres said unspecified "additional stop-gap measures" would have to be taken to ensure salaries and entitlements are paid.

"Member States have paid only 70 per cent of the total amount needed for our regular budget operations in 2019. This translates into a cash shortage of $230 million at the end of September. We run the risk of depleting our backup liquidity reserves by the end of the month," he wrote.

To cut costs, Guterres mentioned postponing conferences and meetings and reducing services, while also restricting official travel to only essential activities and taking measures to save energy.

Guterres had asked member states earlier this year to up contributions to the world body to head off cash flow problems, but they refused, a UN official said on condition of anonymity.
From yesterday’s article on the subject:

Oil prices fall after US expands China blacklist
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Oil prices fell on Tuesday as the US announced the blacklisting of more Chinese firms, dampening expectations for a trade deal between the world's two largest economies.

Brent crude fell nearly 1 percent to $57.79 a barrel, while US crude prices dropped 1.1 percent to $52.18 a barrel.

On Monday, the US government said the blacklist would include some of China’s top artificial intelligence startups, ahead of trade-talks in Washington later this week.

Lebanese PM Hariri says UAE promised Lebanon financial aid: Report
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri said on Tuesday Leb was promised financial assistance by the United Arab Emirates during his visit there, Lebanese broadcaster al-Jadeed said.

"We were promised financial assistance that will revive the Lebanese economy and we are working on this matter," Hariri said in comments to news hounds.

"The atmosphere is excellent. We have obligations we must accelerate and soon you will hear very excellent news be it in the matter of investment or aid," he said, according to a headline from al-Jadeed.

Hariri, who led a Lebanese delegation to the Gulf state seeking funds to stem a loss of investor and depositor confidence at home, had hoped on Monday for a cash injection into Leb’s central bank.

But on Tuesday broadcaster MTV quoted him saying this option "requires study" and that discussions on the topic included risks to the UAE of such a move.

There have been no further official UAE statements on Hariri’s visit since his meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan on Monday, when the UAE lifted a ban on its citizens traveling to Leb.

Faced with one of the world’s highest debt burdens, low growth and crumbling infrastructure, Beirut has vowed to implement long-delayed reforms though little has so far been done.

Protests resume in Iraq’s Sadr City as uprising enters second week
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraq’s government issued a second package of proposed social reforms on Tuesday in an attempt to appease the demands of anti-government protesters who for eight days have demonstrated nationwide, with the loss of 110 lives and 6,000 maimed.

Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi issued a 13-point plan centered on subsidies and housing for the poor, as well as training and educational initiatives for unemployed youth.

Abdul Mahdi, following a cabinet meeting, posted his reforms on social media. Most Iraqis have been cut off from the internet and social media for several days now.

Protests resumed on Monday night in Baghdad’s Sadr City district, with at least one member of the security forces killed, although much of Iraq appeared quieter than it has been for a week as politicians sought a way to end an uprising.

Iraqi security forces began arresting protesters after nightfall on Tuesday in eastern and northwestern parts of Baghdad, police sources told Rooters. Police were carrying photos of protesters taken in recent days to identify them and arrest them. Iraq’s semi-official high commission for human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
said that 800 people were tossed into the calaboose last week, with about 500 already released.

Protesters, who have called for the removal of the government and a political class it views as corrupt have clashed with the security forces, mainly in Baghdad and the south.

Iraq’s military said on Tuesday one member of an Interior Ministry force was killed and four maimed when they came under fire from unknown assailants in Sadr City, where 15 people died the previous night in riots.

The violence has been the worst in Iraq since it put down an insurgency by the Sunni Moslem Islamic State

group nearly two years ago, and the biggest test for Abdul Mahdi, in office for a year.

The spread of the violence to Sadr City this week could heighten the security challenge posed by the protests. Unrest has historically been hard to put down in the district, where around a third of Baghdad’s 8 million people live with little electricity or water and few jobs.

Protesters set fire to tires outside the municipal council building and courthouse in Mudhaffar Square, police said. The gunfire that targeted the security forces was fired from a crowd of protesters, according to the police.

Protesters say they have come under attack by members of the security forces using live ammunition. Rooters journalists have witnessed protesters being killed and maimed by snipers firing from rooftops into crowds.

Parliament, which held its first session on Tuesday since the crisis began, discussed the move and reform plans aimed at pacifying protesters.

Europe
Macron vows to fight against ‘Islamist terror’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] French President Emmanuel Macron vowed an "unrelenting fight in the face of Islamist terrorism" on Tuesday as he paid tribute to the four Gay Paree police staff stabbed to death last week by a radicalized colleague.

"We will wage an unrelenting fight in the face of Islamist terrorism," Macron told a ceremony at the police headquarters where the attack took place.

Mickael Harpon, a 45-year-old computer expert in the police intelligence-gathering department, used a kitchen knife and an oyster shucker to kill three male and one female colleague in a 30-minute rampage that ended when an officer shot him in the head.

He had converted to Islam about 10 years ago and adopted increasingly radical beliefs, according to Sherlocks.

The killings have raised questions about how he managed to avoid detection by the police, despite having top-level security clearance.

Macron said it was "inconceivable and unacceptable" that Harpon, who had worked for the police since 2003, had managed to carry out an attack "in the very place where we pursue faceless myrmidons and criminals."

Addressing the police he said: "Your colleagues fell under the blows of a distorted, deadly Islam which we must eradicate."

US prevents Turkish invasion of Syria by CAOC intelligence cutoff
[DEBKA] DEBKAfile sources refute the overblown reporting of a major US pullback from northeastern Syria and reveal that after 100-150 troops leave two observation posts, 2,250 remain in position.

Our military sources disclose that, early Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Pentagon cut the Ottoman Turkish army and air force off from US command and intelligence and the US regional Surveillance and Reconnaissance Task Force. Without these resources, Ankara cannot conduct any major aerial operation in Syria or elsewhere or launch an offensive operation outside The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
because it would be denied air cover.

Initial reporting on the US decision to leave two observation posts and so abandon the Kurds to a Ottoman Turkish invasion was highly exaggerated due to diverse ‐ often competing ‐ motives. Those two posts on the Ottoman Turkish border are not located in Kurdish territory. For now, there is no sign of the bulk of US forces quitting their air and other bases in Syria. Neither are Ottoman Turkish forces seen to be preparing to attack Kurdish towns in northern Syria. American training and its flow of equipment continue uninterrupted for the Syrian Defense Forces, of which the Kurdish YPG is the backbone.

As an added deterrent, President Donald Trump
...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party...
warned Turkey on Monday night if it "goes too far" ‐ meaning that if President Recep Erdogan carries out his repeated threats to attack the Syrian Kurds to clear them out of the regions abutting on the Ottoman Turkish border ‐ the Turks "would suffer the wrath of an extremely decimated economy" which is already in a very bad way.

Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces consider cooperation with Syria’s al-Assad

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Leaders of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are considering a partnership with Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

’s imminent invasion of northeast Syria.

"We are now looking into all options to deter a Ottoman Turkish attack, including communicating with Moscow and Damascus in the event that there is an American void," said a Syrian Kurdish official in an exclusive interview with Al Arabiya English.

A potential collaboration between the SDF and al-Assad would be an alliance of convenience against Ankara. The two parties are not allied but have previously cooperated in the fight against ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
in SDF-controlled northeast Syria.

The possible cooperation follows US President Donald Trump
...His ancestors didn't own any slaves...
’s order on Sunday for American troops to withdraw from northern Syria, a decision that enables Turkey to attack Kurdish forces inside Syria.

Turkey considers the SDF as an enemy due to its links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Kurdish organization based in Turkey which has fought the Ankara government for Kurdish independence.

Trump’s order will remove the buffer of US troops preventing a Ottoman Turkish assault on SDF-controlled territory. The order came into effect Monday with about 50 to 100 US special operators pulling out of the area.

The Ottoman Turkish military carried out strikes overnight on Monday, targeting the Syrian-Iraqi border to prevent Kurdish forces using the route to reinforce northeast Syria, according to two unnamed Ottoman Turkish officials cited by Rooters.

According to Rooters, Ankara aims to drive out Kurdish forces from northeastern Syria and create a space to resettle the two million Syrian refugees currently in Turkey.

The SDF, with help of the US-led coalition, has spent years gaining ground in northern and eastern Syria against ISIS.

American political and military experts have expressed fear that pulling out troops would mean a possible resurgence of ISIS and would be a betrayal to the Kurds.

"We [The US] want to prevent an attack on the Kurds, who have fought against ISIS and now face the possibility of Ottoman Turkish incursion or perhaps an attack by the regime," International Crisis Group CEO Rob Malley told Al Arabiya English in an interview last month.
