Jayne Mansfield Born: Vera Jayne Palmer, April 19, 1933, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, U.S.
Died: June 29, 1967, New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.
Cause of death: Brain trauma sustained in automobile crash (Here’s Why Those Extensions on Semi-trailers Are Called Mansfield Bars
You might not know it, but an actress’s death made might have saved your life)
Jayne Mansfield was an American actress. She was also a singer and nightclub entertainer as well as one of the early Playboy Playmates. She was a major Hollywood sex symbol during the 1950s and early 1960s while under contract at 20th Century Fox. She was also known for her well-publicized personal life and publicity stunts, such as "wardrobe malfunctions
Any doctors making such a ridiculous diagnosis ought to have his or her licensed suspended for a few months.
[Times Colonist, via Insty] - The head of a Nelson, B.C., emergency department says it's time doctors start looking at the underlying cause of medical conditions triggered by smoke and heat.
When a patient in her 70s came into the emergency department at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, B.C., Dr. Kyle Merritt had no idea hundreds of people were dying of heat across the province.
It was late June, and British Columbia was consumed under a heat wave that would soon go down as both the hottest and deadliest in Canadian history.
The head of the hospital’s emergency department, Merritt could see the aggravated toll the extreme heat took on patients battling multiple health problems at once, often with little money.
"She has diabetes. She has some heart failure. ... She lives in a trailer, no air conditioning," says Merritt of the senior patient.
"All of her health problems have all been worsened. And she's really struggling to stay hydrated."
As the mercury climbed, more patients arrived and pressure on the hospital mounted. Merritt and his colleagues tried to make sense of a surge in heat illness most had only seen in medical school.
"We were having to figure out how do we cool someone in the emergency department," says the doctor. "People are running out to the Dollar Store to buy spray bottles."
Merritt remembers hitting a tipping point, the extreme heat an opening salvo in another summer of crisis. He started contacting other doctors and nurses, in Prince George, Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria.
The response was immediate. Roughly 40 doctors and nurses at the small hospital — all busy trying to manage a pandemic and their regular professional lives — came together under the banner Doctors and Nurses for Planetary Health.

Just another example of politicized medical personnel,
let the 'buyer of their brand of medicine beware' - Like Covidian Medical personnel - buy one experimental shot (add another, because 1 is not enough) & another (ditto 2 not enough) & another (ditto 3 not enough)) add $90 a day pills, which you must take for the rest of your life to stay alive.... perpetual politicized medicine.

Aren't Canadian ERs air conditioned? That should help the patients. Beyond that, make sure they get water and check they haven't lost too much salt.

Will there be a shot for climate change?

We all have our hobbies, I guess. The next video cued up for me was her interview with comedienne Joan Rivers, in which Ms Hamzy looked and sounded like a wholesome Southern girl — except for the subject matter.
Followed in our own time by Kamal-Skank, Sonny Lierced-Nipple Cuomo, Gillum-Wiener-Toobin, and presided over by Magoo-Snifferoo and his Crackpipe Pr0n-Streaming son

I doubt Connie Lingus did either Geddy Lee or Alex Lifeson, who were both married by 1976 and didn't ever seem overly interested in groupies like their tour mates in KISS were just a few years later. Neil Peart used to read books before and after shows, so he set the tone for Rush. I bet Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley thanked them later for not providing them 'competition' for groupies.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said on Friday that the couple’s infant son Gus had been released from the hospital and had been on a ventilator for a week.
The couple, who adopted Penelope Rose and Joseph August in August, had posted a picture of themselves with a baby in a hospital on Halloween.
"After 3 weeks in and out of hospitals, 125 miles in an ambulance, and a terrifying week on a ventilator, Gus is home, smiling, and doing great!" Chasten Buttigieg said on Twitter on Friday.
Buttigieg told ABC last month "It’s such an incredible blessing. We didn’t know that it was going to be twins until about 24 hours ahead of time but they have brought just such joy to our lives."
Chasten did not say what the baby was being treated for. A Transportation Department spokeswoman declined to comment.
When he was overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate as Biden’s transportation secretary, supporters credited Pete Buttigieg with shattering a centuries-old political barrier for LGBTQ Americans. And a lovely Rooters tongue bath at the end.
James Carville put it well last week when talking about the Woke freaks and Bolsheviks: "These people are bad news... Americans DON'T LIKE THEM. They don't want to sit next to them on the bus or the subway ..."
This is the party of Hunter Biden and his sick pervert dad, of Andrew Gilliam, Anthony Weiner and Jeffrey Toobin, of the ugly corrupt insane little harpies in The Squat, and the predators Cuomo, Gates, Clinton and the whole Epstein crew.

Some days ago, The Wall Street Journal reported on settlements being reached with illegal immigrants that could pay as much as $450,000 a person. That is being ostensibly done as restitution for families that were separated under the Donald Trump presidency.
When Joe Biden was asked about the report, though, he called it "garbage," claiming that it was not going to happen. A day later, his own White House contradicted him, saying that settlements are being negotiated that could reach that amount.
You’d think, at that point, that the president would understand he got caught with his pants down, having no idea what his own administration is doing. Instead, when asked again about it today, Biden doubled down on lying and began to — bizarrely — start screaming at the reporter.
A fair warning, this is really uncomfortable to watch.
Biden has become notorious for being unable to control his emotions when confronted about just about anything. That’s especially true when he knows he’s caught in a lie. Perhaps it’s just his personality, or more likely his senility, but it’s completely unbecoming of a president. Does he think screaming at reporters dictates some kind of moral authority?
In this case, Biden starts wildly yelling about people losing their children, while pointing in a threatening manner.
But attempting to make an anger-fueled moral case is simply a deflection here. Biden knows he’s caught in a lie, and then doubles down with another lie. At the beginning of the clip, he claims that "he didn’t say that," when asked about him dismissing the reports about the payments as "garbage." Except, he absolutely did say that.
Here, listen for yourself.
Doocy asks Biden about reports that his administration was in talks to give $450,000 to individuals separated at the border under Trump

But what if it wasn't really you're child? What if you were smuggling a child that some deadbeat dad sold to you for the purpose of sex trafficking? Or what if the Border Patrol put that child with you in a detention facility for men and another prisoner raped the child?
Oh! You think an adult with a child, neither of whom can prove their identity, should be turned loose in the United States of America after illegally crossing our border?

I think the GOP must demand DNA test proof that the child involved was related to the adult involved. And let's have documentation of the alleged "separation" event. We will suddenly be told that virtually all children coming across the border are adopted. And the usual suspects will uncritically lap it up. Meanwhile the GOPe types will recoil in horror that such cruel requirements might be suggested.

I read somewhere that this settlement, as a single class action, might cost upwards of one BILLION dollars, to illegal aliens who chose to remain incarcerated when their child was released because of existing law regarding pretrial confinement for minors, or for illegal alien children sent across the border without parents or with people who rented then to appear as a family to avoid immediate return. This cannot stand. Even senile Bidet thought it was "garbage" when first told. Then the Kalorama White House sent word that it was policy, and poof, JoJo "knew" all about it and showed anger when questioned. This cannot continue...

[Mercer] The Learjet liberals—the world’s wokerati—flew into Glasgow, Scotland, to plot against gasoline, goshawks (birdies) and you.
The annual "Conference of the Parties" (COP26), as well as Joe Biden’s plans for greenhouse-gas pollution reduction and clean-energy technologies demand the following reminders:
Gasoline is a glorious resource. Drilling for oil is the second most efficient, cheapest—and hence cleanest—source of energy. "It requires only a narrow hole in the earth," explained the Wall Street Journal, "and is extracted as a highly concentrated form of energy"—it "is up to 1,000 times more efficient than solar energy, which requires large panels collecting a less-concentrated form of energy known as the midday sun. But even solar power is roughly 10 times as efficient as biomass-derived fuels like ethanol."
The more efficient the source of energy, the less waste and pollution are involved in its conversion into energy. Think of the totality of the production process! The fewer resources expended in bringing a fuel to market, the cleaner and cheaper is the process.
State-sponsored "sexy" technologies in the West, moreover, have decidedly ugly outcomes for worker bees in the East. The Glasgow Crowd’s cravings must be sated, but not by despoiling California, if you know what I mean.
Enter the Chinese worker.
"You buy a Prius hybrid car and think you’re saving the planet," divulged Lindsey Hilsum of PBS’s "News Hour," "but each motor contains a kilo of neodymium and each battery more than 10 kilos of lanthanum, rare earth elements from China. Green campaigners love wind turbines, but the permanent magnets used to manufacture a 3-megawatt turbine contain some two tons of rare earth."
Mining for rare earth metals is a filthy undertaking. Hybrid hypocrites prefer by far that it be done by the poor villagers of the Baiyunkuang District of Darhan Muminggan in Inner Mongolia, northern China. There lie the largest deposits of rare earth metals.
The Prius is packed with these toxins.
The Limousine and Learjet liberals who legislate "green" industries into being prefer to outsource all energy-related extraction. Leave it to the industrious Chinese to "meet 95 percent of the world’s demand for rare earth." As most of the separation and extraction of rare earth metals is done in China, "the pollution stays in China, too," reports Hilsum from Baiyunebo in Inner Mongolia.

Follow the $, indeed. Electric Vehicle companies and related battery startups are the biggest source of baksheesh and payola for Democrat pols today
#3
So while China is deliberately despoiling our economy, we’re more permanently despoiling the Chinese environment? Or do they not care because it’s Mongolia rather than Han Chinese territory?
#4
Time to start a rumor that will drive eco-lefties nuts: "(The mass of) all those rare earth metals dug up in China and turned into batteries and wind turbine parts shipped to the West will knock the Earth's orbit off. And increase gerbil worming!"

I doubt Kamala knows that there are more trees west of the Mississippi today than were when the first settlers arrived. It was the Great Plains for a reason. Today there's a national reserve of what it did look like back then and trees are minimal. Man planted a heck of a lot of trees. Everywhere there was a settlement there are trees planted by humans.

#11 Yes, under the first Biden Admin aka the Carter Admin, we were also descending into chaos. 1979 was the nadir.
Hyperinflation, military - diplomatic debacles, soaring crime, the precursors to Woke madness...
America was falling apart in 1979, as it is now under the Second Carter Administration -- though in Jimmy's defense, he supported the research that yielded fracking and he also deregulated the airline industry. He wasn't nearly so inept, Woke or outright retarded as the current regime of lunatics
[American Thinker] Mollie Hemingway has written a blockbuster book about all the strands of deception and falsehoods that converged to take down Donald Trump on Nov. 3 and 4 and beyond (and before) in her book: Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech and the Democrats Seized Our Elections (Regnery, 2021). I twice asked two Barnes and Noble stores in two weeks whether they had it in stock, and each time -- no. So I finally had to order it online. It has ten chapters, plus a prologue and an epilogue. The total number of endnotes is 1,243 (I added them up), many having extensive commentaries. Only a large and excellent team of researchers could put together a book like this, and she credits them by name in her acknowledgments.
Hemingway’s conclusion: It is clear that the Dem party has followed a pattern of cheating, inch by inch, for a long time.
As a class, the Dem leadership and journalists have turned into liars and false prophets. However, Ms. Hemingway begins the book with this encouragement: "You are not wrong" (the Prologue). Don't allow the media to gaslight you. You are not crazy. Hemingway thoroughly presents the end-noted evidence.
The evidence can be boiled down as follows. Trump won a fair election on Nov. 3, but lost a fraudulent one late on Nov. 3 (about 22:00) and on to Nov. 4 and beyond, in some important Electoral College states. The Dems believed their own (fake) polling data that had said Trump was far behind. But they were shocked when they saw that he was about to win by a huge margin in those states. No matter. That's when they went to Plan B and did their dirty work, in the early hours.
Instead of calling the election for Trump, the Dems, with their allies in the lying media, unprecedentedly stopped the normal vote count "coincidentally" around the same time in some of those states, sent the monitors home, and in the late hours illegally rammed through numerous lopsided ballots (a "surge"), favoring Basement Biden, such that he "won" by 10,000 to 30,000 votes, on Nov. 4+ in the targeted Electoral College States. By video, we fortuitously saw boxes filled with votes pulled out from under tables after the observers were told to go home, in Fulton County, Atlanta (Chapter 10). (In contrast, Texas and Florida got their vote counting done on time, and their populations are larger than the selected "special states.") Don't let the media gaslight you. Those ballots really were fixed and unaccounted for.
Over the next decade or two, the Dems plan to flip red states blue by their methods. They have been doing this in carefully selected states already, over several election cycles. Here is the Dem's long-range, gradual strategy, which was exposed most visibly during election "season" (not day): (1) Find dark blue vote counting centers. (2) Promote mail-in ballots and call anyone a racist who objects (huge bundles of ballots have been found at drop-boxes). (3) Ram through those fake, lopsided Dem ballots. (4) Or the vote counters in dark-blue cities will count many Dem ballots twice. (5) They may even employ questionable vote counting software. (6) Result: The Dem nominee wins!

Here are the votes Sweeney got in the last several elections. Prior to 2021, those were the winning totals.
2021 30,268
2017 31,541
2013 31,045
2100 25,299
2007 29,908
He would need 7200+ (24% of his vote total so far) of the 12000 "found votes" to win. Even Biden's people didn't cheat that much.
#15
Sweeney spend ca. $14 million on his last campaign -- the most in history for any state senate race. In terms of walking around money, that's about $2,000 per each of 7,200 votes.
Or more likely a payout of around $200,000 for every "harvester" of 100 votes or more in Newark, Camden, Patterson, trailer parks or nursing homes across the state.
Could NJ State Senate Leader for Life Sweeney have found 70 vote harvesters willing to round up 100 votes each for a cool $200k? Seems plausible to me.
If so, then apply the same logic and calculations to the ridiculous shit that happened in MI and GA and PA last November.
How much of the $800 billion or so that Zuckerpunch, Soros and Steyer funneled was used to pay for "harvesters" pulling in 50,000 obviously-doctored ballots in the wee hours in Detroit, Atlanta and Philly?

This is not limited to just Federal Elections. I suspect some states like Oregon and Washington are 'redder' than they appear because the local elections are simularly fixed (Washington has had mandatory mail-in ballots for some time now). Heck even California might not be as blue as they claim.

[Unherd] A hinge moment happened this week in South Africa. The country finally transitioned from rainbow utopianism to reality.
The turning point was the municipal elections in which the 110-year-old ruling African National Congress failed to gain a majority of the vote. The party is, despite its manifest failings, still custodian of the liberator’s mantle among many black South Africans — a recent survey showed that although 60% of ANC voters associated their party with corruption, they would nonetheless vote for it; such is the brand loyalty — but the party’s once hegemonic power is in retreat. The decline over the years is neatly in tandem with the nation’s trajectory towards a failed state. At its peak in 2004, the ANC pulled nearly 70% of the national vote. This week, it could barely pull past 46%.
The party has lost majority control of all the major metropolitan areas; across 62 municipalities, desperate, if informal, coalition negotiations on power and patronage are underway. And the collapse is being blamed on the fact that so few ANC supporters bothered to vote.
This is surely the result of catastrophic declines in public trust across all institutions of state — and particularly in the political classes during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s term. According to some under-reported polling in August, two thirds of respondents said they were willing — 46% were "very willing" — to give up elections altogether in favour of a non-elected government that could provide security, houses and jobs. The death of the USSR shows that communism isn't forever. It's just that it has to die over and over again in other places.

No, actually the "grip" will tighten. The Marikana platinum mine massacre of 2012 clearly illustrated that. The ANC may undergo a name change, but the same elitists will control the mines and resources.
Chinese control over African and global mining—past, present and future, an excerpt:
Sinosteel’s acquisition of the Dilokong chromite mine in 1997 marked the start of Chinese investment into African mining. This was not, however, the first contact between African and Chinese miners. In 1904, in the aftermath of the Boer wars, the shortage of labourers on the South African gold mines was acute. In the next two years, a total of 64,000 indentured Chinese workers were imported to South Africa. In 1906, they represented 34% of the total number of unskilled workers on the mines.
The Chinese workers were treated as an international commodity and stayed on a three-year contract with conditions in principle similar to the African migrant labour. In 1907, the risk of having a large group of Chinese workers as immigrants when their contract ended made the Chinese question a key issue in the elections in Transvaal. The Boer generals Smuts and Botha won the elections, and all the Chinese workers were repatriated to China after their contracts ended. By 1910, all of them had been shipped home (Allen 1992).

Are we looking at the next step in the path to another "extended conflict"?
Where DC funnels $$$Billions into a remote "protective Mission" turned "Peace Keeping conflict" and somehow certain persons and family members in DC SWAMP area get a millions back in return?
Questions:
Shouldn't the US Biden Junta be asked to secure our on borders and protect our Own Citizens before spending and wasting $$$ billions in some remote land?
Are the Socialcrats running short on Ethiopian migrants?
I ask because, it seems every time DC gets into one of these "Protective Peace Keeping Missions" it turns to a "Limited No Win Peace Keeping Conflict". Then DC pulls out after wasted $$$ Billions, at the cost 100's or 1000's of US Military lives.
Followed by 1,000's of the collapsing governments US workers, supporters and families heading to the USA at US Taxpayer cost.

I find the most interesting location in Russia for following the weather is Oymyakon. It gets really, really cold and has already hit -30F earlier this month.

Hurrah, a TWIB! We haven’t had one in ages! Headline link goes to Mr. Michener’s Thriftbooks author page. All other links go to various Amazon Kindle pages.
James A. Michener
It has been a while, so I am going to do a very broad coverage of some books, specifically an author, which would make a good read, or even a good gift.
I did promise to approach the case for and against Sad Sam in Once An Eagle, Anton Myrer, as it was presented to me as a study in leadership. I'll get to that when I have the time to properly approach the subject.
The famous, prolific James Michener. I am late to the game with his books, specifically Poland, Centennial, and now his breakout story Hawaii. I was about half way through Poland when I ordered the other two books. I will say, I'm glad I had an inter-act between books as Michener has a very distinct and strong tempo, as one must have to cover such swaths of history and remain readable, so that the books didn't blend into each other.
Currently, I am reading Hawaii, and not that far into it so to quote the book outside of what I have read is unreasonable. That said, the chapter "From the Sun-Swept Lagoon" is perhaps the best written piece about how people allow bad things to happen to just get along, and how bad actors are created and used to push bad things to accomplish an agenda. It was spooky, in a word.
Teroro saw things more simply. He was outraged. His thoughts were forthright and purposeful. The death of the slaves he could condone, for that was the law of the world, on every island. But to execute for trivial reasons the best fighters on Bora Bora, merely to appease a new god, was obviously wrong and disastrous. "Look at the body of Terupe, lying there between the shark and the turtle! He was the best steersman I have had. And the High Priest knew it. And Tapoa, useless beside the shark. He was wise and would have made a good counselor." Teroro was so furious that he did not trust himself to look either at his brother or at the High Priest, lest he uncover his thoughts. Instead, he contented himself with staring ahead at the impressive canoes and listening to the mournful drums, speaking of death. He thought: "Unless we settle the High Priest now, these drums are the requiem of Bora Bora." He saw clearly that the death of eight or ten more key warriors would lay the island open to assault. "I'll work out a plan," he swore to himself.
I cannot go beyond this chapter with quotes, but this chapter alone was pretty amazing.
The locations and events in Centennial I am more familiar with, and found the characters and story very engaging. This book is why I think Michener would make a good read for you or as a gift to somebody who has visited one of Michener's topics, or maybe even live there is they are new to the area.
Of course, these are adult books dealing with tough topics, so keep that in mind before wrapping a book up for a thirteen year old; there needs to be a certain maturity and understanding to pull the stories and lessons from, at least, these three books.
For the straight up history buffs, one of my favorites, Roger Crowley, released a book in 2019 I had just come across: The Accursed Tower: The Fall of Acre and the End of the Crusades. If you recall, I have been fond of all of his books, so this was an obvious grab. It is not a long book, and I do not have it handy for quotes, but it is Crowley's classic style of writing: engaging, concise, informative, and sensory. It was interesting in the sense that it covers a time and place a lot of history lessons just kind of skip over or talk around. Crowly was like, "Yeah, this happened." and I'm glad I took the time for it.
Daylight Savings Time
Yeah, its that time of year when grumpy Kansas sweeps the leaves off of the driveway and reminds everyone, including myself especially, to do the semi-annual home safety check. Alarm battery check or even replacement, especially your smoke detectors. On the topic of batteries, doesn't hurt to replace any electronic lock batteries as well. Obviously don't throw out working batteries, just don't take the chance of something important not working, though I will admit the defeat of the electronic safe was interesting. Buddy of mine was tasked with opening the safe, and was very excited. To say how quickly he won is to say how disappointed both him and I were in this safe's security. But the point was not to hide the family jewels from Black Bart, but to have a location secure from my kids who were smart enough to use a key and understand PIN combinations, and didn't trust myself to a rotary combination lock on a good day in high school.
Also, boogie bags or bug-out bags need a review and a change of clothes for those of us who have seasons. Review your threat matrix, perhaps there is a new road, or an old road closed, or the most likely danger is not Mother Nature but something more Man Made.
Keep your emergency stores up. It is possible if you went super squirrel some of your food items are coming up on date and is time to rotate them out. Be discreet, don't be that fish hole posting pictures of the garage full of TP when people are about to knife fight for a single roll. Don't leave it out where guests, or maintenance for some of you, can give it a gander.
This is an opinion piece, not an advice article. That said, I am anxious that Thanksgiving weekend will rile people up. Trip to Mom's was $40 gas, now $80. Stuck at airports. Stuff like that. I know the basic no frills items in my line have gone up around 15% in the 2020 price book, and quality seems to be declining, from straight up lemons to stuff like receiving two right side door slides instead of a left and right, general dinkary.
Baseline seems to be 2 weeks food, 2 weeks portable food, ability to purify water, and medications for that 4 weeks. The rest is up to you to personalize. Role play it out, and if you are not good at that or know that beating yourself in chess doesn't mean you are a good chess player, grab that person who is. Have some fun with it, have that alien invasion. Just remember, in real life you won't be fighting the communist soldier zombie from planet Arachis with nothing but your shotgun, chainsaw hand, and wolf familiar+5. You might have an exciting opening scene, but the rest of the show is the very unglamorous, very pass/fail security, shelter, water, food game.
If I were to GM this, my final set of advice before Game On! would be remember the survivor of The Balkins: flashy gets you mugged, mugged gets you dead.
[Telegram] Nine groups opposed to the Ethiopian government announced the creation of a united alliance aimed at changing the government in the country. The agreement between the oppositionists was signed on Friday in Washington. Meanwhile, the US Embassy is now urging all of its citizens to leave the country.
The armed conflict between the central government of Ethiopia and the authorities of the autonomous region of Tigray, who are accused of separatism, has continued since November 2020. Both Abiy Ahmed's Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa and Tigray authorities from the National Liberation Front (NPLF) question each other's legitimacy.
On Friday, nine opposition groups, some of which are armed, have announced they will join forces against the Ethiopian government to form the United Front of Ethiopian Federalist and Confederalist Forces (UFEFCF). These include the Oromo Liberation Army, in addition to the NFOT. Some of the groups have armed fighters.
"The front is being created to reverse the devastating effects of Abiy's rule [...] and in recognition of the great need to work together and join forces to ensure a safe transition in the country," Reuters quoted the new front as saying.
One of the organizers of the alliance told The Associated Press thato The United Front will "establish a transitional government" and then "begin to meet and communicate with countries, diplomats and international actors in Ethiopia and abroad." At the same time, the alliance is both political and military, but it had no contacts with the government of Abiy Ahmed.
The agreement between the oppositionists was signed on Friday in Washington.
"Of course, we prefer there to be a peaceful and orderly transition with Abiy removed," a spokesman for the Oromo Liberation Army told AP.
"The goal is to be as inclusive as possible. We know that this transition requires the participation of all stakeholders," he added.
An Ethiopian government spokeswoman said on Twitter that opposition groups had the opportunity to resolve their differences in elections earlier this year, and all those groups that rejected this option "cannot be in favor of democratization."
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Twitter for an end to the war in Ethiopia and an immediate start of peace talks without any preconditions. US Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman was in Addis Ababa on Thursday, where he met with Defense Secretary, Treasury Secretary, Deputy Prime Minister, and African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki.
But it is not known if the meeting of the American envoy will take place with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia himself, Abiy, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
The UN Security Council convened a meeting on Ethiopia on Friday at the request of the diplomatic representatives of Ireland, Kenya, Niger, Tunisia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Alisa Vairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Genocide Prevention, warned of the escalation of the conflict and the spread of violence to Kenya.
The European Union also called for a ceasefire, but added that this was not enough and did not rule out the imposition of sanctions.
"It would be much more spectacular if the European countries got together and talked about the consequences."
On Thursday, the Ethiopian government compared Tigray's secessionist forces to a "rat sticking out of a hole" on social media and said Ethiopia is close to "bury the forces of evil." The state of emergency has been in effect in the country since Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Tigray Liberation Front, however, also said on Thursday that his forces were already in the city of Kemis, 325 kilometers from Addis Ababa. Representatives of the central government question the territorial gains of the separatists.
[ET] A federal appeals court on Saturday blocked the Biden administration’s private employer COVID-19 vaccine mandate, asserting there may be constitutional issues with the requirement.
"Because the petitions give cause to believe there are grave statutory and constitutional issues with the mandate, the mandate is hereby STAYED pending further action by this court," a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit said in the brief order.
The halt of the mandate, which was unveiled this week, is temporary as the case moves forward.
The case was brought by multiple businesses, including the American Family Association; multiple individuals; and several states, including Texas, Utah, and Mississippi.
Petitioners said the mandate, promulgated as an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), should be struck down because it exceeds OSHA’s authority under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
They said that the authority is limited to workplace-related hazards while the risk from COVID-19 is "a society-wide danger." They also said the mandate doesn’t make sense because determining whether COVID-19 is a workplace hazard depends on employees’ age and health, not how many co-workers they have.
"In an attempt to impose a nationwide vaccination mandate without approval from Congress, the executive branch has couched its COVID-19 vaccine mandate as an emergency workplace rule affecting nearly 100 million Americans. But the ETS is neither a workplace rule nor responsive to an emergency," lawyers for the petitioners wrote in an emergency motion asking the court to impose a stay.

[An Nahar] The lawyers of the families of the Beirut port blast victims are preparing to take a host of legal measures Monday against Court of Appeals judge Habib Mezher, amid calls for the Higher Judicial Council to penalize him for "committing a blatant violation" and to refer him to judicial inspection, media reports said on Saturday. The Mutahiddoun activist group meanwhile said that its lawyer Rami Ollaiq has filed a recusal lawsuit against Mezher before the Court of Appeals, noting that the judge "has political connections directly linked to the figures who have been summoned for interrogation, which allows for legitimate suspicion over his role and the motives of his decision in terms of the lack of objectivity, neutrality and impartiality."
Mezher sparked controversy after he started looking into a recusal lawsuit filed against Beirut port blast investigator Judge Tarek Bitar. Court of Appeals head Habib Rizkallah later announced that he had "exclusively" tasked Mezher with handling a recusal lawsuit against Court of Appeals judge Nassib Elia, which is separate from the one filed against Bitar.
Bitar's probe into the port case was suspended on Thursday after Mezher notified him of a lawsuit filed against him by ex-minister Youssef Fenianos. Mezher also asked Bitar to hand over the details of the case to enable the court to review the lawsuit.
The Beirut-based rights group Legal Agenda warned that Mezher's request to see the full content of the investigation violates the secrecy of the probe. The group also said that Mezher's known opinions critical of Bitar may constitute bias.
According to media reports, Mezher is close to Hizbullah ...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory... and the Amal Movement, which both have called for Bitar's removal and launched a fierce campaign against him over alleged selectivity in his summonings.

[ToloNews] 25 ISIS affiliates surrendered to the Islamic Emirate through the mediation of tribal elders in the eastern province of Nangarhar The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country.. , provincial officials said on Saturday.
The head of the Nangarhar intelligence department, Dr. Basheer, said that these ISIS fighters were active in various parts of the province.
The surrendered ISIS fighters were granted amnesty by the order of Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate.
"Today 25 members of ISIS surrendered to the Islamic Emirate," Dr. Basheer said. "In total 250 ISIS affiliates surrendered to the Islamic Emirate in over the past two months. They have been pardoned and they don’t fight against us anymore. If they act against their commitments, they will be punished."
The tribal elders said the villagers would set fire to the homes of those who broke their commitments.
"We took an oath from the surrendered ISIS members that they will not carry out destructive actions. If they try to bother the people and create insecurity or fight against the Islamic Emirate, their houses will be set on fire and they will be kicked out of the country," said Nasir Momand, a tribal elder.
The surrenderers said that they wanted to continue their normal living.
"We were previously carrying out actions against the Taliban ...mindless ferocity in a turban... but now the Islamic Emirate give us amnesty and we came and surrendered to them. We regret our actions that we performed in the past," said Ziauddin, a surrendered member of ISIS.
ISIS has grabbed credit for several attacks in Nangarhar. However, it was a brave man who first ate an oyster... the Islamic Emirate downplays the threat of ISIS in Afghanistan.
[Garowe] The United States has renewed traditional diplomatic ways of hunting for al-Shabaab ...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... Death Eaters, an al-Qaeda linked group that still enjoys support within Central and Southern Somalia, in the latest concerted effort to destroy the Death Eaters.
State Department announced that any member of the public who can give information on the whereabouts of top al-Shabaab leaders will get $6 million. Four al-Shabaab leaders linked to attacks in Kenya and Somalia have been identified.
Those in the list include Abu Ubaidah, Mahad Karate, Fuad Mohammed Khalaf, and Jafar and are said to be brass hats at the Somalia-based terror group. The officials run different departments within the group.
Abu Ubaidah whose real name is Omar Ahmed Direye has led the Death Eater group for just over a year since al-Shabaab's former leader, Ahmed Abdi aw-Mohammed [known as Godane], was killed in a U.S. Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... . His whereabouts still remain unknown.
For over a decade, al-Shabaab has caused havoc in Kenya and Somalia under Ubaidah's leadership since 2015, most notably with a massacre at Garissa University in Kenya, in which 148 people were killed and the 2017 Mogadishu twin truck bombings where 587 people died.
In September 2015 al-Shabaab announced the appointment of Godane's successor naming Ahmad Umar Abu Ubaidah, described by Shabaab sources as a close lieutenant to Godane -- although the name is seen as likely to be a pseudonym.
The group also vowed to avenge the death of Godane and said they would continue their fight to topple the country's internationally-backed government.
Mahad Karate, also known as Abdirahman Mohammed Warsame reportedly serves as the terror group's shadow deputy leader. Karate has some command responsibility for the Amniyat, al-Shabaab’s intelligence and security wing, as well as the group’s finances, which have been a center of controversy in recent days.
The Amniyat plays a key role in the execution of suicide kabooms and liquidations in Somalia, Kenya, and other countries in the region, and provides logistical support for al-Shabaab’s terrorist activities.
For Fuad Mohammed Khalaf, he has allegedly facilitated financial support to al-Shabaab; in May 2008, he held two fundraising events for al-Shabaab at mosques in Kismaayo, Somalia.
In April 2008, Khalaf and several other individuals directed vehicle-borne bomb attacks on Æthiopian bases and Transitional Federal Government [TFG] elements in Mogadishu, Somalia.
In May 2008, Khalaf and a group of fighters attacked and captured a cop shoppe in Mogadishu, killing and wounding several soldiers. Later in 2010, Khalaf was designated by the U.S. Department of the Treasury under Executive Order 13536 for contributing to the violence and the deterioration of security in Somalia.
Jafar also known as Amar, is an al-Shabaab controller and has served as Abdikadir Mohammed Abdikadir's deputy, and is reportedly missing one eye. All the four al-Shabaab leaders have never been seen in public.
The decision by the US comes at the time Washington is considering to dispatch elite troops to the Horn of Africa nation, about 1 year after their withdrawal. The US has been a major security partner of Somalia.
[IsraelTimes] 12 others arrested in incident that may be linked to illegal immigration, authorities say; one of those involved is believed to be Paleostinian
Mallorca police arrested 12 passengers and were seeking 12 more Saturday who fled a plane during an emergency landing in an "unprecedented" incident possibly linked to illegal immigration, officials said.
The unauthorized exodus followed a passenger apparently being taking ill on a flight from Morocco to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... , with the plane forced to stage an emergency landing at Palma de Mallorca, one of Spain’s busiest airports.
"Twelve people have been arrested and 12 more have yet to be found," Aina Calvo, the Spanish government’s representative in the Balearic Islands, told a news conference.
"Such events have never taken place before at any airport in Spain."
Police earlier said a passenger "apparently suffered a diabetic coma and was taken by ambulance to hospital with a companion" but on arrival was found to be fine and discharged.
"He was arrested on suspicion of encouraging illegal immigration and violating Spanish immigration law," a police statement said, noting his lover companion had fled.
During the evacuation, another 21 passengers got out of the plane at around 7:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Friday evening and ran onto the runway, Calvo said, prompting a massive police search that forced the closure of the airport until around midnight.
Another person was arrested for "insults and aggression" inside the plane, raising to 24 the total number involved in the incident — most of them Moroccans except for one "who we believe is Paleostinian," she said, adding that the incident was "unprecedented."
Investigators were examining "whether what happened at the airport was an orchestrated, planned event or an isolated incident", she said.
"At this stage we do not have any information that allows us to confirm that this was an orchestrated operation... or part of a pre-determined plan. But the investigation is still open."
Calvo said the plane had been on the tarmac "for quite some time" before the other passengers decided to disembark.
"At this point, we cannot clearly say why these 21 people decided to rush onto the runway."
Those that fled the plane would be prosecuted for non-compliance with air safety regulations and irregular entry into Spain, and would be deported to their country of origin, Calvo said.
None of them had applied for political asylum, she added.
Following the investigation, medical emergency protocols would be reviewed to see if anything needed changing in light of the incident, she added.
According to aircraft tracker FlightRadar24, the plane was an Air Arabia Maroc Airbus A320 flying between Casablanca and Istanbul.
During the incident, 13 planes bound for Palma were rerouted to other airports, and 16 departing flights suffered significant delays, AENA said.

[REGNUM] In Rostov-on-Don, a criminal case was opened on the fact of torture in the interregional tuberculosis hospital No. 19. This was reported by the Public Supervisory Commission of the Rostov Region.
"It became known that the Investigative Committee of the Oktyabrsky District recently opened another criminal case and is actively investigating it. In this case, there are more than 60 persons who were subjected to violence in the ILO-19. This became possible with the negligent attitude of the past leadership of the GUFSIN of Russia in the Rostov region. At the moment, the leadership of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Rostov region has dismissed all the persons involved, an investigation is underway," the POC regional office said in Instagram.
During the checks carried out by representatives of the commission, it turned out that the prisoners were tied to beds. Some were held in this position for three to 72 days.
IA REGNUM does not have official comments from the GUFSIN of Russia in the Rostov region and the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Rostov region.
IA REGNUM recalls that on October 5, the network posted footage of illegal actions against an unidentified man, which, according to the author of the recording, took place in the Regional Tuberculosis Hospital No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Saratov region. Later, new videos of torture, humiliation and violence in this hospital appeared. After the release of the videos, a criminal case was opened.
After a public outcry, the Kremlin said that the publication of video recordings of torture in places of deprivation of liberty was the reason for rather active verification actions by the relevant departments.
[BenarNews] A Guantanamo Bay inmate’s testimony before a U.S. military tribunal last week about being tortured at a secret CIA site and the jury’s clemency recommendation tied to that account may have implications for the trial of three Southeast Asian terror suspects incarcerated at the notorious prison, lawyers and activists say.
Majid Khan, who acknowledged having served as a money courier leading up to the 2003 bombing of the Marriott hotel in Jakarta, was sentenced to 26 years in prison last week. Before his sentencing, he testified in graphic detail about torture he experienced at an overseas "black site" run by the Central Intelligence Agency after his arrest that year until he was transferred to the U.S. military prison in Cuba in 2006.
"I thought I was going to die," Khan, a Pak national, said while reading from a 39-page statement during his sentencing hearing at Guantanamo on Oct. 28, according to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named. "The more I cooperated and told them, the more I was tortured."

[Rudaw] Iraqi forces and the Peshmerga on Saturday launched a joint security operation to clear out Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS) remnants in Nineveh province, a senior military official told Rudaw, as the holy warrior group remains a serious security threat.
The operation’s main focus is in the areas of Kashaf al-Ulya and Kashaf al-Sufla south of djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... where ISIS is active, spokesperson for Joint Operations Command Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji told Rudaw’s Hawar Jalaladin.
Around 150 to 200 members of the group are present in the area, he added.
Last month, the deputy Peshmerga minister said a joint brigade would be formed after Iraq’s October 10 election. Khafaji described Saturday’s operation as their "first" in this area of Nineveh.
Iraq’s Security Media Cell announced the start of the operation earlier Saturday morning. It is expected to end in the next "two hours," according to Khafaji who was optimistic about the outcome.
Sirwan Barzani, commander of Peshmerga forces’ Gwer-Makhmour front said in a tweet late Saturday evening that "All ISIS cells were neutralised in a joint operation by the Peshmerga, Coalition Forces, and Iraqi Army", explaining that the joint operations were necessary to end the actions of the terrorist group.

[AlAhram] Rescuers supplied around 800 migrants colonists on a charity ship off Italia with emergency food and warm blankets Saturday, as their appeal for a safe port went unanswered and they braced for another night at sea.
German NGO Mission Lifeline said its ship Rise Above had delivered "urgently needed relief supplies" for the hundreds of people stuck on board fellow charity ship Sea Eye 4, including over 200 minors.
The Sea Eye 4 had already been carrying nearly 400 people pulled to safety at sea when it raced to the rescue of another 400 people crowded onto a wooden boat on Thursday.
The Ocean Viking, a charity vessel run by SOS Mediterranee, is also looking for a port for over 300 people it has rescued, bringing the number of migrants colonists seeking to disembark in Italia to over 1,100.
There were "many children under the age of 10" and five pregnant women on board the Sea Eye 4, the NGO said in a statement, adding that over 200 people had been treated so far at the onboard hospital.
"At present, we receive more support from the small Dresden-based sea rescue organization Mission Lifeline than from all EU states together!" Sea Eye chairman Gorden Isler was quoted as saying.
"Our crew is working at the limits of what is humanly possible. The ship must be allowed to dock immediately to ensure the safety of all those rescued and the crew," he said.
Italia is one of the main points of entry into Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... for migrants colonists from North Africa, mainly from Libya and Tunisia, with tens of thousands of people seeking to cross the central Mediterranean each year.
Under previous interior minister Matteo Salvini's "closed ports" policy, European states had to agree to take a certain number of rescued migrants colonists before the charity ships were allowed to dock.
Isler said "negotiations on the distribution of the rescued" should be conducted after the migrants colonists land.
Nearly 55,000 migrants colonists have disembarked in Italia this year, compared to just under 30,000 last year, according to figures from the interior ministry.
[AnNahar] Four women have been found dead in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, a front man for Afghanistan's Taliban ...Arabic for students... government said on Saturday, following reports that activists had been killed.
Two suspects have been arrested after the four bodies were found at a house in the city's fifth police district, interior ministry front man Qari Sayed Khosti said in a video statement.
"The arrested people have admitted in initial interrogation that the women were invited to the house by them. Further investigations are under way and the case has been referred to court," he said.
Khosti did not identify the victims, but a source in Mazar-e-Sharif told AFP that at least one of the dead was a women's rights activist, whose family does not wish to speak to the media. "Please don't kill us!"
A report on BBC Persian, citing civil society sources, said the four women were friends and colleagues who had hoped to travel to Mazar-e-Sharif airport for a flight out of the country.
A rights group source told AFP on condition of anonymity that the women received a call that they thought was an invitation to join an evacuation flight and were picked up by a car, only to be found dead later.
The Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in August after a 20-year war against the former US-backed government, are a deeply conservative Islamist movement.
Under their last period of rule women were banned from public life and since the group's return to government many rights activists have fled the country.
Some women who remained have held street protests in Kabul demanding that their rights be respected and that girls be allowed to attend public high schools.
Taliban fighters have broken up some of the protests, and the government has threatened to arrest any journalists covering unauthorized gatherings.
But the movement's leaders have insisted that their fighters are not authorized to kill activists and have promised that any who do will be punished.
[MSN] Tyler Miller, 41, an employee of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington state, wrote in an October 13 Facebook post that "lethal force is justified when defending one's life, liberty, or property."
"PSA - COVID mandates are threatening your life, liberty and property," Miller added.
Miller wrote the post on a page called 'Liberty, At All Hazards.' Operated by Miller himself, the page has promoted a number of anti-vaccine and anti-mask rallies, and also has a number of videos of Miller promoting COVID conspiracy theories.
Miller is an engineering technician at Kitsap-Bangor's Trident Refit Facility and is responsible for maintaining the nuclear-powered submarines that are stationed within the base, according to the Kitsap Sun.
The facility is reportedly the current home base for eight Ohio-class missile submarines.
In light of the post, the U.S. Navy suspended Miller from his position for at least one month and also revoked his classified security clearances.
The Navy noted that these security clearances were required for Miller to perform his job.

Can’t really blame the Navy here for revoking his security clearance. The guy gave them little choice.

#Lebanon’s Information Minister George Kordahi linked submitting his resignation to “guarantees” it would change the #Gulf’s stance towards his country, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reports, citing sources close to him.https://t.co/hXIxKTdUUK
[Modern War Institute - West Point] Over the course of two decades and at a price tag of over $88 billion, the United States and its NATO partners built a modern and well-equipped Afghan military—one that, like a Fabergé egg, boasted a glossy exterior but shattered under stress after US military advisors departed.
Confronted by a smaller, technologically outmatched military, the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) rapidly disintegrated, in most cases avoiding major battles and negotiating their surrenders to Taliban commanders instead of fighting. Within weeks of the US withdrawal, the Taliban had seized the majority of Afghanistan’s provincial capitals with little to no bloodshed.
If the United States ever wants to build a partner military again, it had better learn the lessons of Afghanistan—and overhaul how it plans and implements US security assistance programs.
The long and thorough analysis ends with this thought:
The next time the United States decides to build a foreign army, success will largely depend on avoiding the issues that afflicted the Afghan military. But in places like Mali and Somalia, armies built by Western forces exhibit many similar tendencies. Without serious reform, the United States will continue building expensive militaries—ones whose viability is only surface deep, contingent on advisors babysitting partner forces indefinitely.

MWI used an interesting Russian Fabergé egg analogy. A pity Russian 'Lessons Learned' in Afghanistan could not have been given an in-depth study as well. But perhaps it was, and the concept of "Endless Wars" was given the MIC stamp of approval.

You mean the rise of ISIS and overrunning Iraq didn't give you a hint? It's all those happy and glad reports you demanded of the trainers that you could pass upward for your careerist track.
It's what happens when you blind yourselves to social anthropology and what makes up a population. They're tribal. Period.
Now about indoctrinating your own troops to hate themselves and America...

They were there (those that actually were there, there was supposed to be a lot of 'ghosts'), for a paycheck. Not because they wanted to do it. And they had to kick back to the boss.
When things went south, they went home. This is what happens when you treat the military as jobs program.

Per the late great political scientist Sam Huntington, there are societies that have effective governance, and a much larger number (at least 5x as many) societies where the government does not govern.
In Huntington's day, he placed the USSR in the former category along with the USA. His point was that we could not think about rallying the chaotic, ungoverned world to the cause of democracy.
The term is simply irrelevant to the main challenge those societies face, which is simply to establish political order defined largely in terms of effective governance that is not shambolicly inept and corrupt.
We Are Ruled By Morons ...who never read or learned from Huntington and 2,000 years of history

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Irish police said on Saturday they had arrested a man on suspicion of making threats, with national media reporting he was suspected of threatening to kill a British MP.
The arrest came after Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed to death last month, prompting concerns over the level of threat faced by politicians and calls for better security.
The Garda, Ireland’s police service, said in a statement that they arrested a 41-year-old man in Cork in southwestern Ireland on Saturday morning "on suspicion of making threats against a person from outside this jurisdiction."
Irish police said officers seized a number of electronic devices while searching the residential property.
RTE national broadcaster reported that "it is understood that the person targeted by the alleged threat is a Westminster MP."
The Irish Times reported that the investigation concerned "threats to kill a female Labour MP."
It said it understood that the MP had alerted police after she received a phone call on October 18 in which a person threatened to kill her. This was three days after the murder of Amess.
The Irish Times reported that the man, a Brit, was arrested at a rented apartment early Saturday morning and taken to Dublin for questioning.
A 25-year-old man accused of murdering Amess in the southeastern English resort of Leigh-on-Sea will go on trial next year.
The Crown Prosecution Service has said the murder has a "terrorist connection" with "religious and ideological motivations."
British police on October 27 arrested a man after senior Labour politician Angela Rayner received a string of threatening and abusive phone calls.

[ToloNews] The Ottoman Turkish border forces detained 149 Afghan migrants colonists in the vicinity of the border with Iran, the country’s media reported on Saturday.
The reports said that one individual was arrested on charges of smuggling migrants colonists.
The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... has recently intensified security measures to prevent a new wave of migrants colonists to its soil.
Human rights watchdogs expressed concern over the dire state of the Afghan migrants colonists along the country's border.
"We call on the regional and world countries--if (you) don’t give us a hand and don’t provide assistance for the migrants colonists, don’t take actions which are in contrast with the international law," said Lal Gul Lal, head of the Afghanistan Human Rights Organization.
According to reports, the Afghan migrants colonists have been struggling with fierce challenges along the borders of neighboring, regional and world countries.
A video went viral on social media showing human traffickers treating migrants colonists poorly.
"Unfortunately, the regional countries have a violent mostly peaceful behavior with the Afghan migrants colonists," said Farddin Fedayee, a civil rights activist.
With the fall of the former government, a great number of Afghans have sought to either legally or illegally flee the country.
"We urge the world to support Afghanistan, thus the people will overcome the economic problems and no one will be forced to flee the country and cause another wave of migrants colonists to flow," said Bilal Karimi, deputy front man for the Islamic Emirate.
A human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... group earlier in a report blamed Turkey for violation of international law regarding the migrants colonists. The report said that the Ottoman Turkish forces had beaten Afghan migrants colonists.

[DailyWire] Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration is reportedly gathering data on an oil pipeline in Michigan to determine if shutting it down would further increase fuel prices in the region.
"Revoking the permits for the [Line 5] pipeline that delivers oil from western Canada across Wisconsin, the Great Lakes and Michigan and into Ontario, would please environmentalists who have urged the White House to block fossil fuel infrastructure, but it would aggravate a rift with Canada and could exacerbate a spike in energy prices that Republicans are already using as a political weapon," Politico Pro reported. "Killing a pipeline while U.S. gasoline prices are the highest in years could be political poison for Biden, who has seen his approval rating crash in recent months."
The administration has not yet made a decision about the pipeline, which comes after the Canadian government invoked an old international treaty to stop the state of Michigan from shutting down the pipeline.

Ottawa last week formally invoked the dispute-resolution article of a 1977 treaty governing transit pipelines between the two nations. The treaty states that, except in an emergency, natural disaster or pressing safety concern, “no public authority in the territory of either” the U.S. or Canada may take measures “which are intended to, or which would have the effect of, impeding, diverting, redirecting or interfering with in any way the transmission of hydrocarbon in transit.”

[NewsFrontInfo] Estonian soldiers serving at the Gao military base in Mali mistakenly opened fire on British soldiers.
These things do happen from time to time, and everyone is unhappy about it afterward.
It is noted that the British military did not follow the security procedures when approaching the base. No one was injured during the incident, according to Postimees.
"The shooting incident occurred when a minibus carrying British troops approached the military base. Estonian soldiers guarding the base opened fire on the car, as the British did not inform the base personnel of their approach in accordance with the rules," the message said.
This information was confirmed by the head of the press service of the Estonian defense forces Taavi Karotamm. According to him, the country's soldiers have faithfully complied with all the rules stipulated by the procedure.

Wallace did have the body of a giant. He also did act independently of other Scottish royals who did have a propensity to surrender to the English who almost always outnumbered them in battle. He was betrayed by another Scot to the English. Since historical record of people who existed 1000 years ago is scant, Gibson had leeway in his creation of the film to Wikipedia accounts of Wallace. The name Gibson originated out of the United Kingdom region by the way so Gibson's ancestors would be from that part of the world. Some of the original inhabitants of Scotland included the Vikings of Norway.

At that time in Scotland the kilt was not worn. The first mention of kilts is in 1538. They were worn as full-length garments by Gaelic-speaking Scots Highlander men. The knee-length kilt that we see today didn't come around until the early 18th century.

[IsraelTimes] Felm says it hasn’t seen evidence that funds given to Defense for Children International-Paleostine were used improperly, but warns of potential banking sanctions
A Christian charity organization in Finland has decided to end ties with a Paleostinian rights group after it was blacklisted by Israel for alleged terror links.
The executive director of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, or Felm, said Friday the group hasn’t seen evidence that the 30,000 euros ($34,650) it has provided annually since 2015 to Defense for Children International-Paleostine (DCIP) was used improperly.
"We have actively monitored the use of the money and it has been used for work advancing children’s rights," Rolf Steffansson told Rooters.
He said, however, that Felm could no longer work with DCIP after Israel designated it and five other rights groups as terror organizations, citing potential banking sanctions.
"It could have impacted the work we do in 30 countries through banking services for example," he said.
DCIP, which denies the Israeli allegations, has asked Felm to reconsider the move.
"We have been subject to escalating delegitimization and disinformation campaigns advanced by an international network of bad boy groups with the support of Israeli government ministries," Khaled Quzmarm DCIP’s director-general, told Rooters via a lawyer.
DCIP also said none of its other donors have indicated they will cut off funding.
DCIP was one of six Paleostinian civil society organizations designated last month as terrorist groups, with Israel saying they were tied to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine, a secular, leftist political movement with an armed wing that has carried out deadly attacks against Israelis. Israel and Western countries consider the PFLP a terrorist organization.
The other designated groups are the al-Haq human rights ...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions... group, the Addameer rights group, the Bisan Center for Research and Development, the Union of Paleostinian Women’s Committees and the Union of Agricultural Work Committees.
The groups, some of which have close ties to rights groups in Israel and abroad, deny the allegations. They say the terror designation is aimed at muzzling critics of Israel’s half-century military control of territories the Paleostinians want for their future state.
Israel has faced scrutiny over the evidence detailing the organization’s alleged terror links, which the Shin Bet security service shared with European governments. Israel may have additional evidence that has not been made public.
In a briefing to news hounds last month, a senior Israeli official insisted that the intelligence connecting the PFLP to the organizations was "ironclad." He said the material presented to the US on the matter included "unequivocal evidence that includes video footage, photos, payment receipts that tie the said groups to the backing of terror activity."
[AlAhram] The Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of... said Saturday it has killed more than 150 more Iran's Houthi sock puppets ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. The coalition, which backs Yemen's internationally recognised government, has reported near-daily strikes over the past month against the Iran-backed Houthis, each time claiming high losses.
"Fourteen military vehicles were destroyed and more than 157 terrorist elements eliminated" in the latest raids, the coalition said in a statement carried by the Saudi state news agency SPA.
The air strikes targeted two regions of oil-rich Marib province, al-Jawf in the north and the south's al-Bayda, it said, as well as Sirwah, west of Marib city.
The Houthis began a major push to seize the city in February and, after a lull, they renewed their offensive in September.
Marib is the embattled government's last stronghold in the north. A loyalist military official acknowledged Tuesday that the Houthis have made advances on the ground.
Yemen's civil war began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa, prompting Saudi-led forces to intervene to prop up the government the following year.

[ToloNews] At least 460 children were killed due to relentless violence in the first six months of the current year in Afghanistan, the United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... Children’s Funds (UNICEF) said in its latest report.
The report also cited the killing of "nine members of one family, including four girls and two boys," who were reportedly killed on Thursday morning, "when an explosive remnant of war detonated inside a home in Kunduz."
According to the report, three other children were maimed.
The waves of four decades of conflict have affected the lives of thousands of people in Afghanistan.
Hibatullah, 6, lost his leg because of the conflict and said that he is now dependent on an artificial leg.
"My son was hit with a bullet in a clash in Nangarhar The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country.. . He was hospitalized for a long time and then his leg was amputated," said Abdullah, Hibatullah’s father. "We were very hopeless. He is now under treatment by the Red Thingy and (they) made an artificial leg for him."
"Every day, 10 to 15 children who are brought here struggle with brain freeze. It is very dangerous in the current situation and this is all due to war and chemical materials that have affected the children," said Mohammad Fahim, a therapist.
UNICEF’s statement expressed concern over the condition of the Afghan children.
"We are also concerned about the number of children killed by bombs so far this year. The death of one child is heartbreaking," said Samantha Mort, chief of communication, advocacy & civic engagement for UNICEF.
The UN organization underscored poverty and malnutrition as another two challenges that the Afghan children have been struggling with for years now.
"We are extremely concerned about the situation for children in Afghanistan at the moment" said Heather Barr, Human Rights Watch's associate director of the women's rights division. "It is a very desperate situation... the most pressing issue is hunger and malnutrition. There are 3.1 million who are severely malnourished in Afghanistan and the United Nation says that one million of them are at risk to death."

Edinburgh University medical student and climate activist Mikaela Loach said that the UK government’s decision to go forward with oil exploration projects was "worse than hypocrisy", saying that "it is violence".
"These are last resort times," she said demanding "audacious" action to confront the government.
"We must demand an end to capitalism. We must demand an end to white supremacy ...the pernicious doctrine that laws were intended to be obeyed, that society works better when people don't pour shreiking from their places of worship every Friday for a weekend of rioting over insults real or imagined; and that cannibalism, beastiality, incest, murder, theft, rape, and similar activities are bad. A Dead White European (which invalidates his opinion) philosopher once opined that societies thrive when a person's word can be relied upon, and that a society which puts individual happiness first will invariably fail. We must demand black liberation. We must abolish prisons and the police," she proclaimed.
"Our demands should not be toned down or palatable. They should worry, disrupt, and challenge the status quo," Loach said.
Loach announced in May that she would be suing the British government’s Oil and Gas Authority in order to stop public subsidies for fossil fuel energy companies.

[AlAhram] A landmine explosion killed seven people, including a child, in Homs province of central Syria on Saturday, a war monitor reported.
It detonated as a vehicle with the seven on board passed through a desert road outside the historic city of Palmyra, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
"It destroyed the vehicle and killed all the passengers inside, which included two women, a child, and four men," said the monitor, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria.
Explosives left in fields, along roads or even in buildings by all sides in Syria's decade-long conflict have maimed thousands of civilians and killed hundreds of others.
The Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor recorded 182 casualties last year in Syria, mainly from cluster munition remnants.
The figure accounted for nearly half of the 360 cluster munition casualties documented across the world in 2020, according to the watchdog.
It has recorded a total of 4,099 cluster munition casualties in Syria, including 2,102 in attacks and 1,997 from cluster munition remnants.
Across Syria, one in three populated communities are thought to be contaminated by explosive ordnance, the United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... said in March.
One in two people are at risk from explosive ordnance contamination, it added in a report.
Syria's war has killed nearly half a million people and displaced millions since it began with the brutal repression of anti-government protests in 2011.
[WashingtonExaminer] After months of trying, conservative Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was given access last night to the jail housing up to 120 alleged Jan. 6 rioters and watched as they sang the national anthem, a nightly ritual.
In a statement, Greene said that D.C. Corrections Department officials allowed her in to check on the conditions which some of the inmates complained about.
She dubbed it the “Patriot Wing.”
In a series of tweets, she showed the pretrial defendants dressed in orange while singing the anthem.
“I just left the Patriot wing of the DC jail where I visited with pretrial J6 defendants in person. I asked questions and heard their stories. We must do everything we can to remain a Free America where justice is colorblind, doesn’t see political lines, and truth prevails,” she tweeted.
For months she and other conservatives eager to defend the Jan. 6 rioters have been denied access to their jail. The inmate complaints of conditions led the U.S. Marshals Service to move about 400 prisoners out of another facility but not the alleged rioters.
Greene and some judges have decried the holding of the alleged rioters for so long. This week, federal Judge Royce Lamberth ordered one inmate released from the D.C. jail after “deplorable” conditions were described to him.
The government has charged about 600 in Jan. 6 crimes related to the riot inside the U.S. Capitol that interfered with Congress' certification of the 2020 election. Many of the rioters were hopeful of stopping or delaying the certification. One rioter, Ashli Babbitt, was shot dead by a U.S. Capitol Police officer, and several officers later died or committed suicide in cases linked to the riot.

[IsraelTimes] Government says liquidation attempt failed, premier in good health; 7 security guards are injured
Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an liquidation attempt with an armed drone that targeted his residence early Sunday, and is unharmed, officials said.
Two Iraqi officials told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that seven of his security guards were maimed in the attack which occurred in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone area. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to give official statements.
The prime minister tweeted shortly after the attack: "The rockets of treason will not shake one bit of the steadfastness and determination of the heroic security forces."
"I am fine and among my people. Thank God," he added in the post.
In a statement, the government said the drone tried to hit al-Kadhimi’s home, adding that he was "unharmed and in good health." Residents of Baghdad heard the sound of a kaboom followed by gunfire from the direction of the capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies and government offices.
The statement released by state-run media said the failed liquidation attempt was with "a booby-trapped drone that tried to target his residence in the Green Zone."
"The security forces are taking the necessary measures in connection with this failed attempt ...Curses! Foiled again!... ," it said.
It was not clear who was behind the attack, nor did anyone immediately claim responsibility. It comes amid a stand-off between security forces and pro-Iran ...The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both... Shiite militias whose supporters have been camped outside the Green Zone for nearly a month after they rejected the results of Iraq’s parliamentary elections in which they were the biggest losers.
Protests turned deadly Friday when the demonstrators marched toward the Green Zone. There was an exchange of fire in which one protester was killed. Dozens of security forces were maimed. al-Khadimi ordered an investigation to determine what sparked the festivities and who violated orders not to open fire.
The United States, the UN Security Council and others have praised the Oct. 10 election, which was mostly violence-free and without major technical glitches.
Following the vote, militia supporters had pitched tents near the Green Zone, rejecting the election results and threatening violence unless their demands for a recount were met.
The unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud have cast a shadow over the vote. The standoff with the militia supporters has also increased tensions among rival Shiite factions that could reflect on the street and threaten Iraq’s newfound relative stability.
The election was held months ahead of schedule in response to mass protests in late 2019, which saw tens of thousands in Baghdad and predominantly Shiite southern provinces rally against endemic corruption, poor services and unemployment. They also protested against the heavy-handed interference of neighboring Iran in Iraq’s affairs through Iran-backed militias.
The militias lost some popularity since the 2018 vote, when they made big election gains. Many hold them responsible for suppressing the 2019 protests, and for challenging the state’s authority.
The biggest gains were made by influential Shiite holy manMoqtada Tater al-Sadr ...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He had his hereditary rival, al-Khoei, assassinated only a few hours after the holy rival's appearance out of exile in 2003. Formerly an Iranian catspaw, lately he's gagged over some of their more outlandish antics, then went back to catspawry... , who won the largest number of parliament seats, 73 out of 329. While he maintains good relations with Iran, al-Sadr publicly opposes external interference in Iraq’s affairs.
The protests appeared to be aimed at pressuring al-Sadr to ensure that Iran-aligned factions are part of the next Cabinet. As the winner, al-Sadr’s bloc will seek coalition partners and name the prime minister.

[ToloNews] A number of Afghan asylum seekers have begun a sit-in protest outside the United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) building in Indonesia over what they said is a delay in processing their asylum applications.
The asylum seekers said they have been protesting for the past four days, but so far UNHCR has not told them anything about their applications.
The asylum seekers said they have been in Indonesia for several years waiting to be resettled in a host country, but their applications have not been processed.
"The refugees have started a peaceful protest outside the UNHCR building. This is the fourth night that we are here, and so far we have not heard from the UNHCR," a protester said.
Indonesia is not a party to the 1951 Convention relating to the status of refugees and thus serves as a transit country for the refugees.
[ToloNews] It was a split second decision. Mirza Ali Ahmadi and his wife Suraya found themselves and their five children on Aug. 19 in a chaotic crowd outside the gates of the Kabul airport in Afghanistan when a U.S. soldier, from over the tall fence, asked if they needed help.
Fearing their two-month old baby Sohail would get crushed in the melee, they handed him to the soldier, thinking they would soon get to the entrance, which was only about 16 feet (5 meters) away.
[DW] A year ago, Æthiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military campaign against Tigray fighters, promising a quick victory. But Tigrayans managed to turn the tide. DW explains who they are and why they're fighting.
FROM BANDIDOSGUNNIES TO RULERS
In the mid-1970s, a small group of bandidosgunnies founded the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). With a left-wing nationalist ideology, they vowed to fight for the rights of Tigrayans, a relatively small ethnic group that account for just 5% of the population and had long been marginalized by the central government.
Throughout the 1980s the TPLF emerged as a formidable challenger to Æthiopia's then Marxist military dictatorship. The group eventually led an alliance of militia organizations, the Æthiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), that overthrew the Soviet Union-backed regime in 1991.
The alliance then began to run Æthiopia under a federal system, with TPLF holding sway over the other groups and dominating politics for nearly three decades.
Tigrayan leader Meles Zenawi was Æthiopia's transitional president from 1991 until poorly contested elections in 1995, when he was elected prime minister. He would go on to rule the country until his death in 2012, and was succeeded by Hailemariam Desalegn. During this time, Æthiopia saw economic growth, but the government clamped down on dissent.
The EPRDF government led the country through periodic drought and famine, and the 1998-2000 border war with northern neighbor Eritrea ...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age... . Human rights deteriorated during this time, with opposition groups complaining of persecution and corruption, which fed into growing public discontent.
In early 2018, after several years of frequent anti-government protests from different ethnic groups had seriously damaged the legitimacy of the EPRDF government, Hailemariam stepped down. The EPRDF selected Abiy Ahmed, of the Oromo ethnic group, as his successor and he was soon elected prime minister.
Abiy, a non-Tigrayan politician with little ties to the TPLF, enjoyed widespread popularity. He unseated many Tigrayan officials, charged some with corruption and introduced a set of political reforms which sidelined the TPLF. In late 2019, Abiy disbanded the EPRDF coalition government and moved to create the new Prosperity Party (PP). Refusing to join the group, the TPLF moved back to its stronghold.
After the 2020 general election was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the TPLF and some other opposition leaders accused Abiy of delaying the vote to stay in power. Despite the delay, officials in the Tigray region went ahead with regional elections in September 2020. A month later, the federal government began withholding funds from the regional administration.
In early November 2020, TPLF forces were accused of having attacked and looted federal military bases in the region. Abiy kicked off a military campaign in the Tigray region, known as Operation Law enforcement, and promised to swiftly defeat the TPLF fighters.
But since June 2021, the Æthiopian army has endured continued setbacks and has been forced to withdraw from Tigray. Now the front line is getting closer and closer to Addis Ababa, with the prime minister calling on residents to be ready to defend the capital.
The Tigray fighters might have the upper hand, but capturing Addis Ababa will not be easy. They are likely to face resistance from other Æthiopians who fear the return to power of a party that ruled the country for nearly three decades.
Here’s hoping the honourable — and angry — Mitch McConnell kills it in the Senate.
[PostMillennial] The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday has approved President Joe Biden's $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill with the support of a dozen (plus one) Republicans. Six progressive Democrats voted "no" on the bill. AOC's "Squad"
Biden is expected to sign the bill as soon as it lands on his desk, scoring a massive victory for his administration after months of negotiations between the Democratic Party's moderate and progressive sides and their Republican counterparts.
The core part of Biden's infrastructure bill, which is a key component of the administration's "Build Back Better" agenda, includes massive investments in roads, bridges and waterways, and other "hard infrastructure" provisions agreed upon by both Democrat and Republican parties. The Republicans who voted 'yes' may have been persuaded by the US Chamber of Commerce that vigorously promoted this bill. The CBO and the U of PA Warton analysis concludes that the bill will add to the deficit while doing almost nothing for the economy. I don't know how they do analysis on something like this as a lot of the funds in the bill are for earmarked projects, the scope of which are incompletely known.
