Kim Potter trial: Minneapolis jury finds ex-police officer guilty in death of Daunte Wright
[FoxNews] Former Minnesota police officer found guilty on all charges in the death of Daunte Wright.

The jury has found former Minneapolis-area police Officer Kim Potter guilty of first and second degree manslaughter charges in the April 2021 death of Daunte Wright.

Kim Potter, 49, could face a maximum sentence of 15 years for the first-degree manslaughter charge, while the second-degree charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Judge Regina Chu ordered Potter to be taken into custody and held without bail. She also praised the jurors as "heroes of the judicial system." The judge rejected a request from the defense team that Potter be allowed to remain out on $100,000 bail before sentencing. They argued that it's Christmas season and Potter is a devout Catholic, but prosecutors noted that Potter's family had moved out of state.

The jury, comprised of six men and six women, had spent over 27 hours deliberating.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said outside the courthouse that "we have a degree of accountability for Daunte’s death," but that he also felt for Potter.

"She is going from being an esteemed member of the community, an honored member of a noble profession, to being convicted of a serious crime," Ellison said. "I don’t wish that on anyone, but it was our responsibility as the prosecutor, as ministers of justice, to pursue justice wherever it led, and the jury found the facts."

Potter had 26 years of experience as a police officer on April 11 when she says she mistook her handgun for her Taser and fatally wounded 20-year-old Wright.

The 26-year police veteran and other officers, including a trainee, were attempting to arrest Wright when he tried to get back into his vehicle, video shows.

The officers had attempted to stop Wright and then tried to detain him after learning of a warrant for his arrest. Wright, 20, can be seen in a police video climbing back into the driver’s seat of a vehicle as the officers scuffle with him.

In Potter’s body camera footage from the shooting, she can be heard yelling, "I’ll tase you!" and "Taser! Taser! Taser!" before firing her handgun.

She can then be heard saying, "I grabbed the wrong f------ gun," followed by: "Holy s---, I just shot him."

Judge Chu scheduled Potter to be sentenced on Feb. 18. She faces up to 15 years in prison for the first-degree manslaughter charge and up to 10 years in prison for the second-degree manslaughter charge.

The prosecution has said they'll seek an upward departure from sentencing guidelines due to aggravating factors, arguing that Potter's actions were a danger to others and that she abused her authority as a police officer.

#3  I don't have mixed feelings about it (I'll give her the benefit of the doubt) but I'll pass on what my roomie said about it (he's got 43 years in on a local police force) - 'there's no way you go to pull your service weapon and not know the difference between it being a gun or a taser'.

#4  seems like a bad verdict since she clearly didn't mean to shoot

on the other hand I've never heard of anyone mistaking a gun for a taser so the negligence may have been extreme

#8  The way to avoid accidents is not by being careful, but by arranging things so they can't be done wrong. The original formulation of Murphy's Law was "If there is a way to do it wrong, somebody will".

The f**k-up here was wearing both the taser and the gun on the same side which created the possibility of grabbing the wrong one. It is easy to win a round of "Taser? or Gun?" with both weapons laying on the table. But this was real life, in the heat of the moment, with the perp trying to drive off with 2 officers hanging out of the car. I suspect Officer Potter's hand was much more familiar with drawing her gun than her taser.

The prosecution has said they'll seek an upward departure from sentencing guidelines due to aggravating factors, arguing that Potter's actions were a danger to others and that she abused her authority as a police officer.
That is Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (bees pee upon him) playing to the cheap seats. Just more fodder for the race war.

#10  I'm done with 'less than lethal'. Remove all of it. If you resist, you get shot, you stop getting shot when you stop resisting.

We also need to bring back the three strikes law but it needs to be 3 strikes and you get hauled out behind the court house, tied to a stake and 4 guys with AA-12's loaded with Frag-12 rounds turn you into confetti.

#1  Worth noting that if Putin remains president of Russia to 2024, he will have been leader of Russia longer than Czar Nicholas II.
    Posted by: badanov || 12/23/2021 9:02 Comments || Top||

#2  Nicholas II was an incompetent dunce hated by his own people -- including his own aristocrats. He took a powerful great country with a growing economy and a government led by talented, brilliant ministers such as Witte -- and trashed it.

Putin for all his flaws, and there are many, took a country that was in a complete shambles and restored it to a semblance of order, dignity and respect -- self-respect and the respect of the great powers. He crushed the Chechen rebellion and has at least halted NATO's surreal attempts to expand into the Caucasus and within a few hundred miles of Moscow, on Russia's southern flank. Pensions are paid and the fertility rate for White Russians, which collapsed during the initial post-Soviet era, turned around and is growing to the point where the Russian fertility rate now exceeds that of white Americans.

Hate Putin all you like -- I'm not a fan -- but he is undeniably the anti-Nicholas II. That monster was hated by his people. The Soviet leaders were feared or scorned. The Russians know Putin's a bandit but they accept and overwhelmingly support him because they know that the alternative -- decay, decline, weakness and of course corruption regardless who's in charge -- the alternative to Putin is even worse.

    -Great Cultural Revolution
    Diversity is Not Our Strength
    BLUF:
[American Thinker] Speaking of grifters, our society, our culture that benefits everyone is not just threatened from outside our borders, it is, at the very least, not protected by our "betters." These people not only do not have our welfare at heart, they despise us, and they despise us so much they don’t mind telling us — consider Hilary Clinton’s "deplorables" description or Harry Reid’s comments about being able to smell tourists to D.C. As for those who believe that Bill Clinton really "feels your pain," I see no evidence of that other than big talk. In fact, most politicians are complicit with those that benefit the most and are affected the least by the current open-border policies that are undermining our way of life.

It has already started, but where the tipping point is in this process, I do not know. There is a tipping point, however, and there will be an economic and societal collapse that no regular folks will survive intact if unchecked, unvetted immigration overwhelms and eradicates the culture that has led to the freedom and prosperity that we thoughtlessly take for granted today.

    Posted by: Procopius2k || 12/23/2021 7:47 Comments || Top||

#2  Diversity might actually be a good thing but should never be promoted at the expense of one ethnic group over another. Open borders and Affirmative Action are real problems because they do just that. Certain minorities get jobs and promotions they don't deserve at the expense of those who are deserving because of Affirmative Action. Open borders dilute the votes of legal citizens when illegal aliens vote.
    Posted by: Abu Uluque || 12/23/2021 12:51 Comments || Top||

#3  Diversity presumes the existence of its opposite.

Without a common culture based on shared values and agreed-upon definitions -- of worth, of fairness, of honor and beauty, truth and goodness -- without this foundation of a unified culture, diversity just means incoherence and disarray.

Case in point: we could easily assimilate millions of early 20c immigrants because the Italians, Irish, Greeks, Armenians, Poles, even the Mexicans of that era who came to the US quickly adopted the national culture that had come into being at the end of the 19th century.

By 1941, these groups had become more American than the Americans, proudly serving in the military and brandishing their patriotic pride -- especially during their legacy ethnic holiday celebrations (St Pat's, Columbus Day etc).

Today all the cultural force is centrifugal. There is no "unum," only pluribus. Diversity in this era is disastrous -- the opposite of what we need.

DeSantis: American Elites ‘the Number One Reason' China is So Powerful Today
[Breitbart] Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is blasting America’s political and corporate elites as "the number one reason" China has become "as powerful as they are" as he moves to detangle the state’s finances from China-owned companies.

During a State Board of Administration meetingthis week, DeSantis went after the nation’s ruling class for their propping up of China via allowing the communist country to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO) and supporting decades-long free trade policy that has gutted domestic manufacturing.

From 2001 to 2018, U.S. free trade with China eliminated 3.7 million American jobs from the economy — 2.8 million of which were lost in American manufacturing. During that same period, at least 50,000 American manufacturing plants closed down.

"If you go back a generation, the idea was if we make China into the WTO ... that sent a lot of American production capacity over to China," DeSantis said:

    Arabia
US Navy says it seized arms from Iran likely bound for Yemen
[IsraelTimes] Sailors boarding fishing vessel find 1,400 Kalashnikov-style rifles and 226,600 rounds of ammunition

The US Navy said it seized a large cache of assault rifles and ammunition being smuggled by a fishing ship from Iran
...The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both...
    likely bound for war-ravaged Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
US Navy patrol ships discovered the weapons aboard what the Navy described as a stateless fishing vessel in an operation that began on Monday in the northern reaches of the Arabian Sea off Oman and Pakistain. Sailors boarded the vessel and found 1,400 Kalashnikov-style rifles and 226,600 rounds of ammunition, as well five Yemeni crew members.

It’s just the latest interdiction amid the grinding war in Yemen that pits Iran-backed Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
rebels against a Saudi-led military coalition. Western nations and UN experts repeatedly have accused Iran of smuggling illicit weapons and technology into Yemen over the years, fueling the civil war and enabling the Houthis to fire missiles and drones into neighboring Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
Iran denies arming the Houthis despite evidence to the contrary.

In an unusually pointed move, the statement late Wednesday from the Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet blamed Iran for sending the weapons, saying the boat was sailing along a route "historically used to traffic weapons unlawfully to the Houthis in Yemen."

"The direct or indirect supply, sale or transfer of weapons to the Houthis violates UN Security Council Resolutions and US sanctions," the statement added.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the interception.

US Navy patrol ships transferred the confiscated weapons to the guided-missile destroyer USS O’Kane before sinking the fishing vessel because of the "hazard" it posed to commercial shipping. It said the Yemeni crew would be repatriated.

American seizures of arms bound for Yemen’s war, typically Kalashnikov rifles, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, began in 2016 and have continued intermittently. Yemen is awash with small arms that have been smuggled into poorly controlled ports over years of conflict.

The Navy’s 5th fleet said it has confiscated some 8,700 illicit weapons so far this year across the 2.5 million-square-mile area it patrols, including the strategically important Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.

    India-Pakistan
How India dismantled the Pakistan coordinated disinformation operation
List can be downloaded at the link.
[OneIndia] In a closely coordinated effort between intelligence agencies and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Ministry on Monday ordered the blocking of 20 channels on YouTube and 2 websites spreading anti-India propaganda and fake news on the internet. Vide two separate orders - one for 20 YouTube channels directing YouTube, and the other for 2 news websites, requesting Department of Telecom to direct the internet service providers for blocking of the news channels/portals.

The channels and websites belong to a coordinated disinformation network operating from Pakistain and spreading fake news about various sensitive subjects related to India. The channels were used to post divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
content in a coordinated manner on topics like Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
, Indian Army, minority communities in India, Ram Mandir, General Bipin Rawat, etc.

The modus operandi of the anti-India disinformation campaign involved The Naya Pakistain Group (NPG), operating from Pakistain, having a network of YouTube channels, and some other standalone YouTube channels not related to NPG. The channels had a combined subscriber
base of over 35 lakh, and their videos had over 55 crore views. Some of the YouTube channels of the Naya Pakistain Group (NPG) were being operated by anchors of Pak news channels.

These YouTube channels had also posted content on issues such as the farmers' protest, protests related to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and tried to incite the minorities against the Government of India. It was also feared that these YouTube channels would be used to post content to undermine the democratic process of the upcoming elections in five states.

The Ministry has acted to secure the information space in India, and utilized emergency powers under the Rule 16 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The Ministry observed that Most of the content pertains to subjects sensitive from the perspective of national security and are factually incorrect, and are being mainly posted from Pakistain as a coordinated disinformation network (as in the case of Naya Pakistain Group) against India and thus deemed it fit for action under the provisions to block content in case of emergency.

Kerala hit by another Islamic radicalisation wave: Time to act, its now or never
[OneIndia] The back to back political murders in Kerala has once again thrown up the often spoken about subject in the state and that is radicalisation. Recently the state police sought a ban on the Malayalam translation of a 14th century book Mashari-Al-Ushaaq or the Book of Jihad which has been used in the state extensively by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
While many radical outfits have mushroomed in the state of Kerala, the origins of radicalisation in the state can be traced back to the 1980s when the Wahhabi ideology began making its way. The same problem was found in Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. as well, but the ideology became deeply infested for a variety of reasons-one the lack of knowledge and two the lack of political will.

#4  The Byzantines were the Romans -- Constantine moved the capitol to Byzantium, later Constantinople, and once the Western emperors fell (Romulus Augustulus being the last), the last remnant of the Empire was the East.

They (initially) spoke Latin, their legal code traced all the way back to the Republic, and they maintained a professional army longer. If it hadn't been for the first outbreak of the Black Death, Justinian may just have put the Empire back together -- at least around the Mediterranean.

Somalia: Puntland Govt declares ceasefire in Bossaso after battle
Yesterday the battle, today the hudna.
[Garowe] Fighting has reportedly stopped in Bosaso, the commercial capital of Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
state, in what could now pave way for dialogue to end the standoff at PSF, which had been going on since last month after the dismissal of the security agency's director.

For the better part of Tuesday, forces loyal to former Puntland Security Forces [PSF] director Mohammed Osman Diano engaged in a shootout with troops under the Puntland government that claimed the lives of several people and displacement.

Reports from the seaside city indicate that fighting between the two parties has stopped on Wednesday night but the number of casualties still remains unknown. Hundreds of residents of the town flee to neighboring areas on Tuesday.

Prior to the ceasefire, efforts were underway to end the ongoing fighting in Bossaso. Last night, the President of Puntland Said Abdullahi Deni spoke by telephone with a number of civil society organizations and politicians, including former Presidents over the matter.

Sources say the talks between the Puntland government and the former PSF Director will begin in the coming hours and are expected to be mediated by some Puntland elders and religious leaders.

Deni left Baidoa on Tuesday for Garowe after fighting intensified in Bosaso but it's not clear if he had intentions of visiting the coastal city. After intensive meetings, sources told Garowe Online, both sides pledged to agree with a ceasefire for the sake of stability.

The former Somali Prime Minister Omar Sharmarke wrote on his Twitter account that the fighting should end and Puntland should do better after 23 years. He has been pushing for stability in the country for the last couple of years.

The ceasefire was announced by Abdisamad Gallan, the security minister of the Puntland government who said they are ready for talks with the sacked PSF director. This came after efforts by local traditional elders and religious leaders.

UN extends African Union mission in Somalia
    [Garowe] The African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Mission in Somalia [AMISOM] will stay for three more months in Somalia, following a resolution by the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
Security Council [UNSC], which took a vote on Tuesday evening over the fate of the peacekeepers.

The vote, UNSC said, will allow the African Union and Somalia to negotiate until March 31, 2022, over the future of peacekeeping troops. The mandate was supposed to expire on December 31, 2021, upon full implementation of the Somali Transition Plan [STP].

The decision reached under Resolution 2614/2021 was adopted on Tuesday night, granting the peacekeeping force the needed certainty as Somalia and the African Union haggle on whether to completely withdraw or rebrand to an AU-UN hybrid mission.

Turkish shelling kills three civilians in Rojava
[Rudaw] At least three civilians, including a mother and a daughter, were killed and a few children were maimed by Ottoman Turkish shelling in northeast Syria (Rojava) on Tuesday night, the Kurdish-led Syrian forces said hours following the attack.

The Ottoman Turkish army attacked the villages of Zarkan district in Hasaka province, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

The shelling led to the death of three people, including a 60-year-old mother and her 30-year-old daughter, the SDF said noting that four others were left injured.

Among the injuries were three children, it added.

The corpse count rose to four on Wednesday after an old man, who was brutally maimed in the attack, lost his life, according to Hawar News Agency (ANHA).

Local media outlets also confirmed the news of the attack, with North Press Agency (NPA) raising the toll of injuries to ten people. The internal security forces (Asayish) on Tuesday said the Ottoman Turkish offensives targeting areas in north of Hasaka are "an attempt to displace the residents," reported NPA.

The SDF and the Ottoman Turkish forces clashed in Hasaka's Tal Tamer on Wednesnday when Ankara launched a ground attack in Um al- Kif village, said ANHA.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
has not yet commented on the recent attacks.

Ankara has previously launched offensives in the districts.

Two people were killed in Ottoman Turkish bombardment in Zarkan on August 17. Days later, Turkey carried out an aerial attack on Tel Tamer’s Military Council base, killing four members of the SDF, including Sosin Birhat, who was known for her bravery in the fight against the Islamic State

    (ISIS).

Turkey has conducted three military operations in northern Syria since 2016, two of them against Kurdish fighters who Ankara considers a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and a threat to its national security.

It has been threatening a new offensive against Kurdish forces in Rojava in the recent months.

SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi on Friday said Turkey is unable to undertake another "military adventure" against Rojava due to internal issues and international pressure.

Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. in October said he had "no patience" with Kurdish forces in Tal Rifaat, a pocket of territory in the northern Aleppo countryside.

DHS Mayorkas OKs Closure of Some Gaps in the Border Wall
[Breitbart] Work will be completed within the Tucson, El Paso, and Yuma Sectors to address safety concerns by closing construction access gaps that were left open at the time of the border barrier construction pause, and will also include adding missing [electronically controlled] gates, addressing incomplete foundations, and connecting power to gates that are already hung but are currently inoperable. Rescue gates provide access for Border Patrol agents and first responders to access irrigation canals in emergency situations where the water is fast moving and extremely dangerous. These emergency rescue gates are currently inoperable due to missing hardware or being welded shut.

CBP will assess additional remediation needs in the San Diego, El Centro, Yuma, El Paso, and Del Rio Sectors and will prioritize completion of drainage and erosion control measures, safety work on border and access roads, and remediation of temporary use areas used for construction.

on suspicion of selling a fake passport for $10,000 to a Syrian national, Turkey’s state news agency said on Wednesday.

According to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, which cited a statement from the Istanbul Security Directorate, the diplomat and the Syrian national were arrested after the latter allegedly tried to travel to Germany using the passport, which had been issued to the diplomat, from Istanbul International Airport on Nov. 11.

The statement said that security camera footage of the individuals showed the two meeting at the airport and exchanging clothes with one another, per Anadolu Agency.

The police said they had video evidence of the diplomat handing over the diplomatic passport, which had been identified as suspicious at passport control, Rooters reported.

Anadolu Agency reported that $10,000 was allegedly found in an envelope along with a passport in the diplomat’s name — who was identified by his initials, D.J.K. — after coppers conducted a body search, per the statement from the Istanbul Security Directorate.

    The diplomat was locked away

following the incident and remains in detention. The Syrian man was released pending a possible trial for falsifying documents, according to Anadolu Agency.

The news agency added that while foreign diplomats usually have immunity from prosecution, they are subject to prosecution and punishment in countries where they are not accredited. Since the U.S. diplomat was accredited in Lebanon — and not Turkey — he is liable to face prosecution per the country’s laws.

Trump-backed Georgia candidate pushes to eliminate drop boxes, machine voting in elections
[JUSTTHENEWS] Georgia State Sen. Burt Jones (R), who has been endorsed by former President Trump, is running for lieutenant governor of his state on a platform of election integrity as he's pushing for the elimination of drop boxes and a return to voting on paper ballots.

Jones told the John Solomon Reports podcast on Tuesday that drop boxes used in the 2020 election were not legal in Georgia, since the state legislature didn't permit them, but the consent decree made between the Democratic Party
...every time you hear the phrase white people, white supremacy, white anything but paint, you're listening to a Democrat. Ask him/her/it to reimagine something for you; they do that a lot, though not well. They can hear a dog whistle a mile or two away. They invented the spoils system and Tammany Hall, and inspired the addition of the word (Thomas) Nasty to the English language. They want to stop continental drift and repeal the law of unintended side effects...
and state officials allowed them to be used.

While the state legislature legalized drop boxes in the election integrity bill passed earlier this year, a key difference is that the drop boxes must be designated to a precinct, not "spread out all over Metro Atlanta, like they were last time," Jones explained.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati for his part said that, "like the president," he is "keen on Cabinet’s meetings," but warned that "those in charge of this country are obliged to work on reconciling viewpoints instead of worsening the rift."

    Astronomers discover many interstellar planets
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[RIA Novosti] In the Upper Scorpio stellar association closest to the Sun, astronomers using telescopes from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) have identified about a hundred planets moving freely in space, rather than revolving around specific stars. All in all, in our Galaxy, according to scientists, there must be billions of such interstellar planets, or rogue planets.

The results of the study are published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Interstellar planets have been known for about twenty years, but so far no systematic research has been carried out to find and study them. This is due to the fact that they cannot be detected using traditional observation methods, since they are not associated with any stars and are not illuminated by them.

Researchers from France , Spain and Japan analyzed about a hundred terabytes of data obtained over twenty years of observations of the best infrared and optical telescopes: the VLT Very Large Telescope, the VISTA Observation Telescope in the Visible and Infrared Spectrum, the VLT Wide Field of View Telescope (VST) and

"The vast majority of the data that was critical to this study came from ESO observatories," project manager Herve Bouy of the Astrophysics Laboratory of the University of Bordeaux in France said in a press release.

"We used tens of thousands of wide-angle images from objects ESO corresponding to hundreds of hours of observation."

A map of the motion of the stars of the Milky Way, built using data from the Gaia space observatory. Black and magenta represent areas of significant movement, yellow represent areas of relatively little movement. Large-scale filamentous disk structures in the middle plane of the Galaxy are highlighted by lines. Bottom left - satellites of the Magellanic Clouds, right - torn apart Sagittarius dwarf galaxy

In their search, the authors were guided by the assumption that, several million years after their formation, rogue planets with a mass comparable to that of Jupiter are still hot enough to be directly detected using the sensitive infrared cameras of large telescopes.

As a result, after the introduction of corrections for the background light of stars and galaxies, only in the association of young stars of Upper Scorpio closest to the Sun, the researchers identified from 70 to 170, depending on the selection criteria used, such objects, as well as more than three thousand candidates for rogue planets.

"We measured the smallest movements, as well as the color and brightness of tens of millions of sources over a large area of the sky," explains the first author of the article, Nuria Miret-Roig.

"These measurements allowed us to reliably identify the faintest objects in this region - the planets "Outcasts. We didn't know how many there would be, and we're very glad we found so many."

Extrapolation to the rest of the Milky Way galaxy suggests that it contains billions of interstellar planets, the origin of which remains a mystery. The researchers believe that such a huge number of rogue planets could not have formed as a result of the compression of the material of small gas clouds in interstellar space. Most likely, according to the authors, these planets originally formed around stars, and then were thrown out of their parent system.

Nearly $100 billion pilfered from pandemic relief funds, roughly 100 arrested, Secret Service
[JUSTTHENEWS] Nearly $100 billion has been stolen from pandemic relief funds, according to the Secret Service. The stolen money was diverted from the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program and a third program created to issue unemployment assistance funds, the agency said Tuesday, according to CNBC.

Over $2.3 billion has so far been recovered, and roughly 100 suspects, from individuals to groups, have been arrested.

The government has released roughly $3.5 trillion in COVID-19 relief money since the pandemic started in early 2020.
If I got my places right, $100 billion is less than 3% of $3.5 trillion, a little high but not shocking. I’d expected fraud would be 20% or more.
The Secret Service, in announcing the arrest and dollar amounts, also said a new national pandemic fraud recovery coordinator has been appointed to oversee agency investigations.

The new coordinator, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Roy Dotson, told CNBC: "I’ve been in law enforcement for over 29 years and worked some complex fraud investigations for 20 plus years, and I’ve never seen something at this scale."

He also said the agency still has over 900 active investigations related to pandemic fraud.
    The Times of Israel adds:
Most of that figure comes from unemployment fraud. The Labor Department reported about $87 billion in unemployment benefits could have been paid improperly, with a significant portion attributable to fraud.

The Secret Service said it has seized more than $1.2 billion while investigating unemployment insurance and loan fraud and has returned more than $2.3 billion of fraudulently obtained funds by working with financial partners and states to reverse transactions. The Secret Service says it has more than 900 active criminal investigations into pandemic fraud, with cases in every state, and 100 people have been arrested so far.

The White House downplayed the statement, saying Wednesday that the estimate is based on old reports. White House press secretary Jen Psaki
...a valley girl who woke up one morning and found she was spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State under Obama. A new American success story, under Biden she became spokeswoman for the whole administration, and she was even able to get her sister a job...
, when asked to comment on the figure, said, "There is no new research, data or analysis of fraud here."

The Justice Department said last week that its fraud section had prosecuted over 150 defendants in more than 95 criminal cases and had seized over $75 million in cash proceeds derived from fraudulently obtained Paycheck Protection Program funds, as well as numerous real estate properties and luxury items purchased with the proceeds.

The rectangular object seem is the actual weapon casing.

The 'light' seen around the weapon casing is called "Teller light' after the physicist Dr. Edward Teller.

When a nuclear device explodes, the first products of the reaction are X-rays, which penetrate the bomb casing without destroying it.

When outside the bomb casing, the X-rays encounter normal temperature air, which is opaqueto X-rays. So the X-rays are abssorbed by and excite the air molecules to a higher energy state for a very brief period, after which they 'fall back' into a lower energy state and emit that excess energy largely as photons of light.

Punches thrown in Ghana parliament over proposed electronic payments tax
[NYPOST] A brawl broke out on the floor of Ghana’s parliament late on Monday as politicians debated a proposed tax on electronic transactions that has divided the house for weeks. The 1.75% e-levy, which would include taxes on mobile money payments, has been fiercely opposed by the opposition since it was first proposed last month, and held up the passing of the national budget.

Members of parliament rushed the front of the chamber after Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu suggested the tax be debated and voted upon under a hastened ’urgency’ procedure. Some threw punches and grappled while others restrained their colleagues.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta argues that the levy would widen the tax net and raise an additional 6.9 billion Ghanaian cedi ($1.15 billion) in 2022.

But his proposal was met with boos and jeers in parliament when it was first announced.

Those opposed to the levy say it would disproportionately affect lower-income people and those outside the formal banking system who rely heavily rely on mobile money transfers, reducing overall economic activity.

Syrian war killed 3,700 in 2021, lowest annual toll since outbreak a decade ago
[IsraelTimes] According to figures compiled by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 1,505 of the casualties were civilians and among those 360 were children

The conflict in Syria killed 3,746 people in 2021, a monitor said Wednesday, significantly fewer than in 2020, which had already seen the decade-old war’s lowest corpse count.

According to figures compiled by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 1,505 of them were civilians and among those 360 were children.

The figure is by far the lowest tally since the start of the war in Syria and confirms a downward trend that saw 6,800 people killed last year and just over 10,000 in 2019.

The Observatory, an NGO based in the UK but with a network of sources in all regions of Syria, said 297 people were killed in 2021 by landmines and various explosive remnants.

The Landmine Monitor said in November that Syria had overtaken Afghanistan as the country with the highest number of recorded casualties from landmines and explosive remnants of war.

The fighting, which erupted in 2011 after the brutal repression of anti-government protests, has abated over the past two years.

Russian-backed government forces still sporadically strike targets in the northwestern rebel enclave of Idlib but a ceasefire deal has largely held.

group who went underground after their "caliphate" was crushed in 2019 have also carried out deadly hit-and-run attacks in eastern Syria.

The war in Syria has killed close to half a million people and spurred the largest conflict-induced displacement since World War II.

Patriarch Kirill warns of digital repression against Christians
    Direct Translation via Google Translate
[REGNUM] A number of states have already proclaimed obligatory ideas and norms that directly contradict Christian principles and in the near future this may turn into repression against Christians, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill said on December 22 at the annual meeting of the Moscow City Diocese, held in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

At the same time, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church pointed out that persecution against Christians in modern conditions is especially dangerous, since the state systems of coercion have already been strengthened by the "powerful apparatus of digital technologies."

"We see that in the law and political practice of many countries, ideas and concepts that directly contradict God's truth — for example, the biblical teaching about man, his dignity, and relationships with other people — have begun to be accepted as mandatory. It is not difficult to foresee that disloyalty to such ideas very soon in a number of countries may entail a corresponding reaction from an inexorable coercive apparatus equipped with a powerful digital technology apparatus," said Patriarch Kirill.

In addition, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church stressed that now traditional religious and moral values are supported in Russia at the highest level of state power.

"We firmly hope that this situation will continue in the future," said Patriarch Kirill.

Kimberlynn Jurkowski was placed on leave this week after parents complained to Watkins Elementary School that she made students role-play the Holocaust, assigning students to be Jews and pretend to die in gas chambers and dig mass graves, according to the Washington Post. One student was assigned to be Adolf Hitler
...late Fuehrer of Germany, founder of the Third Reich, currently communing with his pals Himmler and Heydrich. He is reincarnated every few days as a politician somebody doesn't like...
, who carried out the Holocaust, Jurkowski told the students, "because the Jews ruined Christmas." A Washington Free Beacon investigation found that Jurkowski was hired by the D.C. public school after a scandalous tenure as a librarian in New Jersey, where she ran in 2010 for a local school board as a Democrat, according to an image posted to her Twitter account.

There is no record of Jurkowski serving on the school board for Hamilton Township in Atlantic County, where she says she ran for office. There is record, however, of New Jersey catching Jurkowski bilking taxpayers out of approximately $24,000 through a program designed to help the children of the state's educators. The Hamilton Township district paid for Jurkowski's two children to receive tutoring—but she continued to bill the district for reimbursements once the tutoring stopped. She was convicted of fraud and forced to forfeit her librarian job, according to court records.

Jurkowski's legal problems continued in 2019 when she faced four charges of animal cruelty for leaving her dogs out in the cold. According to coverage at the time from Pet Rescue Report, Jurkowski left five dogs behind to survive frigid temperatures in a dilapidated environment. Body camera footage from coppers called to the site shows "the entire property was completely run down," with "dogs in pens with sheets of plywood leaning against a fence to act as shelter."

One of the dogs, an older Rottweiler named Poseidon, could barely walk, and was found dead and frozen solid to the ground in one of the pens. The dog's death prompted animal rights activists to launch a #JusticeForPoseidon campaign.

The principal of Watkins Elementary School, Scott Berkowitz, did not return a request for comment on Jurkowski. D.C. Public Schools did not respond to multiple requests for comment, including about whether it was familiar with Jurkowski’s criminal record prior to hiring her.

Since working in D.C. Public Schools, Jurkowski has struck an ultra-partisan combative tone online. Her Twitter account is filled with retweets of calls to abolish the police and defend Paleostinian terrorism. One Al Jazeera post she shared claims that a Paleostinian terrorist named Ahmad Erekat was killed by Israeli police but fails to mention that he was shot after ramming his car into Israelis.

Watkins Elementary School is located just outside a city ward represented by a Democratic politician who claimed that Jews control the weather.

Family-Owned Company Sues Pentagon for Blocking It from Printing Bible Verses on Dog Tags
[Breitbart] Shields of Strength, a small, family-owned, faith-based company, is suing the Pentagon after it blocked it from continuing to produce replica dog tags with Bible verses on them.

First Liberty Institute, on behalf of the company, filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon on December 17, asking a federal court to review and reverse decisions that forbid the company to print inspirational Bible verses on replica dog tags.

Mike Berry, general counsel for First Liberty, said in a statement, “It’s a cruel insult to our service members to deny them a source of inspiration, hope, and encouragement simply because it contains a religious message.”

“DOD officials caved to the empty threats of those who make their living by being offended. There’s no legal reason for the military to discriminate against Shields of Strength,” he said.

Shields of Strength has been making dog tag replicas with Bible verses for the past 20 years, including for military units at the request of commanders. According to Berry, now-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had requested them once for his unit.

Berry said after the military branches in 2011 trademarked certain words and logos associated with them, Shields of Strength obtained licenses to continue making dog tags featuring the words or logos associated with the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force on one side and the Bible verses on the other side.

However, an organization ironically named the Military Religious Freedom Foundation sent a complaint in 2019 to the Department of Defense saying the company should not be allowed to use its licenses with anything religious, prompting the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps to not renew licensing with the company.

Shields of Strength was founded in 1997 by Kenny Vaughan and his wife Tammie to encourage service members. One of its first orders came in 2001 from a military unit about to be deployed to Afghanistan — the 86th Signal Battalion. The couple donated 500 dog tags they called “Shields” to the unit.

The company also donated more than 50,000 pieces a month during the Iraq War, and one time even fulfilled a request for 30,000 pieces, according to First Liberty. The company has made more than five million dog tags and donated hundreds of thousands to active-duty members and veterans, as well as first responders and to the families of those fallen.

“It’s harsh and unkind that an outside group like the MRFF would pursue a radical agenda and seek to deny our service members—particularly those who may have to fight in the fiercest battles—the right to wear inspirational jewelry,” First Liberty Institute said.

“Nowhere are attacks on faith more repugnant than those aimed at the men and women who voluntarily placed their lives on the line to defend the freedom of others. That’s why First Liberty is fighting to make sure outside, anti-faith groups don’t get away with stripping away the rights of our men and women in uniform—especially their God-given freedom to find inspiration in their faith,” it said.

How the hell is this even possible? Is the Pentagon going to stop Omar from printing the koran on toilet paper?

Seriously under what remote legal grounds could this be? Shit print them anyways and call them cat tags.

[REGNUM] Winter has come to Sevastopol - not only a calendar winter, but also a real one, with snowfalls and frosts. A rare show for this city was shot by a photojournalist of IA REGNUM .

It was snowing in the city -- intermittently -- from the evening of December 20. According to local residents, they have not seen so much snow here since 2016.

While some admire the beauty of snow-covered Sevastopol, others are struggling with the consequences of the elements.

Most of the work is done by public utilities and road services. They have been working for the second day to eliminate the consequences of bad weather.

In the last 24 hours alone, 275 tons of deicing mixtures were used on the city's roads, and another 116.6 tons of spreading material were used in yards, squares, and sidewalks. A total of 840 people are involved in cleaning yards and sidewalks from snow.

Scores feared dead after landslide at Myanmar jade mine
[EN.ALGHADEERTV.NET] At least one person was killed and scores were missing after a landslide of dirt and rubble ripped down the waste heap of a Myanmar jade mine, sweeping workers searching for fragments of the gems into a lake and burying them under the debris.Throngs of their families stood on bare, muddy banks on the shores of the lake, as rescue workers in hard hats and hi-vis jackets searched the water in boats after Wednesday’s accident, pictures posted on Facebook by the fire department showed.

One body had been recovered from the scene before rescue operations were called off as night fell, and around 50 people still unaccounted for had likely also died, a fire department official at the scene told Rooters.

"It is so difficult to estimate how many were missing, but we estimate at least 50 missing and they have very little chance of survival," said Pyae Nyein, captain of Hpakant Township’s fire department.

Kachin Network Development Foundation, a local civil society group involved in the rescue operation, earlier estimated the number missing at around 80 after the waste tore down the slag heap from some 200 feet (60 meters).

Two other rescue workers on the scene also said they feared the missing had likely perished in the latest tragedy to hit Myanmar’s poorly regulated jade industry.

The accident took place in the remote Hpakant area of Kachin State at around 4 a.m. (2130 GMT on Tuesday), the fire department said.

Deadly landslides and other accidents are common in Hpakant, the center of Myanmar’s secretive jade industry which draws poor workers from across Myanmar in search of gems mostly for export to China.

In a landslide last weekend, media reported at least six people were killed.

Libyan Elections Have Been Postponed. What Next?
I'd say fisticuffs and firearms. What do you think?
[LIBYAREVIEW] On Wednesday, the Libyan Parliament issued a decision to form a committee tasked with working on preparing a proposal for a post- 24 December roadmap.
    Goodness — all that??
The 10-member committee was formed after it was deemed "impossible" to hold the elections as scheduled.

The Parliamentary Committee is chaired by Nasr El-Din Mhenni Ghobashi Moftah, with members including:

    1) Abdel-Salam Abdullah Mohammed Nassiyah
    2) Misbah Doma, Mohammed Uhaida
    3) Mohammed Saad Hammad Saleh
    4) Issa Mohammed al-Senussi al-Oraibi
    5) Muftah Issa al-Karteji
    6) Mohammed Ibrahim Ismail Tamer
    7) Khaled Ali Mohammed al-Usta
    8) Suleiman Mohammed Mohammed al-Faqih
    9) al-Mabrouk Abdullah Mansour al-Kabeer.

The Parliament in its resolution No. (13) of 2021, to submit and present its report to the Parliament during its next session.

Notably, the committee formed by the Libyan Parliament to follow up the electoral process, concluded that it is "impossible" to hold the Presidential elections on their scheduled date of 24 December.

The Head of the committee, al-Hadi al-Saghir wrote a letter to Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh stressing that the committee reached this conclusion "after reviewing the technical, security and judicial reports." He asked Saleh to return to his previous position and preside over the upcoming Parliamentary sessions.

The committee called for the development of a new road map, "in line with the data resulting from the obstruction of the elections." It also stressed the end of the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) mandate as a caretaker government.

Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) proposed postponing the first round of the national elections to 24 January, a month from their scheduled date.

The commission said in a press statement that it is proposing this in coordination with the Libyan Parliament.

"The Libyan Parliament shall take measures to remove the ’Force Majeure that confronts the completion of the electoral process," HNEC added.

Nigeria: Fulani Jihadists Kill 45 Christian Farmers in 'Barbaric' Attack
    [BREITBART] Jihadist Fulani
... a peculiarly brutal tribe of Moslem herdsmen infesting Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and probably other places that are light on law and order and heavy on tribal identity...
murderous Moslems killed at least 45 largely Christian Tiv farmers in central Nigeria’s Nasarawa state in recent days, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari confirmed Tuesday.

Buhari’s front man issued a statement on his behalf on December 21 expressing the president’s "grief over the heart-wrenching murder of 45 farmers and scores injured following renewed hostilities in ... Nasarawa State."

Armed Fulani herdsmen launched attacks on Nasarawa farmers of the Tiv ethnic group from December 17 through December 19. The violence ensued over the recent killing of a Fulani kinsman in Nasarawa, which the cattle herders blamed on local Tiv farmers, according to Agence La Belle France-Presse (AFP).

Buhari denounced the 48 hours of bloodshed as "senseless and barbaric" in his statement Tuesday. He said his administration would "leave no stone unturned" in bringing the perpetrators "to justice."

President Buhari is himself a member of the Fulani ethnic group and a Moslem. Observers of Nigeria’s worsening Fulani holy warrior crisis have criticized Buhari for his failure to meaningfully curb the largely Moslem group’s attacks on predominantly Christian farmers.

"In 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari .. came to power, and the situation went from bad to worse," Salihu Musa Umar — the founder of Africa’s Farmers and Herders Initiative for Peace and Development — told AFP on April 28.

"Many farmers have accused Buhari’s government of bias — or worse, of stoking the violence for political gain," the news agency noted at the time.

In 2023 it is likely that the house and senate go !dem, that biden and harris are impeached and the speaker (mcarthy?) becomes president. But what of these places where lawlessness prevails? we should stop using 'dem' and 'gop' and refer to ourselves as we believe. Some good words have been sh*t-canned... Gold toilets found in the house of the rector of Smolensk University of Sports
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[RIA Novosti] A copy of Monomakh's hats, bidets and toilets, trimmed with gold, edged weapons, currency, stuffed animals and luxury goods were found during a search in the country house of the rector of Smolensk State University of Sports, detained on suspicion of embezzlement of 1.5 million rubles, follows from the materials of the FSB.

Rector of the Smolensk State University of Sports Georgy Grets was arrested last week in the case of embezzling 1.5 million rubles from the university. According to SUSK, the money was spent on the purchase of plumbing fixtures for his house and for other personal needs.

The photographs provided by RIA Novosti of the FSB Directorate for the Smolensk Region were made during searches at the university and the rector's country house. The plumbing installed in the house is finished in gold and looks very expensive. The house has a swimming pool, sauna and billiard room. The backyard area is also striking in size and well-groomed. In the huge courtyard, there are gazebos, landscape sculptures, a carriage, houses and buildings are architecturally illuminated.

As reported by the investigation, the rector involved his subordinates in the repair of his own house, for which he paid them bonuses in the total amount of 150,000 rubles. In addition, according to the investigation, 600,000 rubles were spent on the purchase of sanitary ware in his country house from the funds of the university; another 800,000 rubles, which were transferred to pay for the repairs of the educational institution that had not been carried out, went into the pocket of the rector and his accomplice from among the employees of the university.

    -Short Attention Span Theater-
The Failed Presidency of Franklin Roosevelt
    by Francis Sempa

[Spectator] Like many people my age (62), I was taught both at home and in school that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a great president. FDR, I was taught, saved American democracy in the 1930s with the New Deal and led the nation to victory against Hitlerism in the 1940s. That view of FDR was reinforced by many television documentaries and history books. And virtually every poll of historians — including the most recent C-Span poll — places FDR in the top five of all U.S. presidents (usually in third place behind Lincoln and Washington). This is so despite persuasive revisionist historical works that paint a very different picture of FDR’s presidency.

Let’s start with the New Deal. In her book The Forgotten Man, Amity Shlaes shows that the New Deal — so lionized by liberal historians and Democrats — did not restore the U.S. economy as promised by FDR and his “brain trust,” but instead extended the sufferings of the Great Depression for seven more years. Unemployment remained well beyond 10 percent throughout the 1930s, only subsiding with the coming of World War II. “The cause of the duration of the Depression,” she writes, “was Washington’s persistent intervention” in the economy. The end result of the New Deal’s “bold persistent experimentation” was “inflexible statism” that has evolved into a gargantuan federal government exercising nearly unlimited powers to a degree that would have shocked the Founders of our country.

But an even greater failure of FDR’s administration in the 1930s was the nation’s lack of preparedness for the Second World War. This is detailed most recently in Arthur Herman’s biography of General Douglas MacArthur (Douglas MacArthur: American Warrior). MacArthur was kept on as the Army’s chief of staff by FDR, and the two repeatedly clashed over the size of the military budget. MacArthur sensed as early as 1934 that another war was on the horizon, but FDR’s budget director proposed to cut the Army’s budget by half and to reduce War Department expenditures by $80 million. MacArthur called the proposed budget “a stunning blow to national defense,” and later told the graduating class at West Point that the “necessity of national defense” was being “sacrificed in the name of economy.”

At one White House meeting between the secretary of war, MacArthur, and FDR, the president repeatedly resisted with harsh and bitter words the war secretary’s pleadings to provide more money for the armed forces. MacArthur interjected by telling FDR: “When we lose the next war and an American boy, lying in the mud with an enemy bayonet through his belly and an enemy foot on his dying throat, spits out his last curse, I want the name to be Roosevelt, not MacArthur.”

By 1939, the U.S. Army ranked 19th in the world with 174,000 personnel, less than Portugal’s army. The Army Air Corps had 26,000 airmen and about 1,200 planes, many of them obsolete. The U.S. Navy was in a little better shape, with 15 battleships, five carriers, 18 heavy cruisers, and 19 light cruisers, but was still unprepared for global war. As late as the summer of 1941, some American troops were training for combat with wooden broomsticks instead of rifles.

FDR’s defenders usually note that while FDR sensed the gathering storm of war abroad, the American people and Congress were wholeheartedly opposed to war preparation, and FDR would not move forward in this area without public and political support. That may be so, but really great leaders — like Lincoln and Washington and Britain’s Winston Churchill — took political risks when their nation’s security was at stake. FDR was unwilling to take such risks. He was above all a political animal — and a deceptive, devious one. General MacArthur once described FDR as “a man who would never tell the truth when a lie would serve him just as well.” Even as FDR covertly began involving the United States as a belligerent in the wars in Asia and Europe, he promised the American people in the 1940 campaign that their sons would not be sent overseas to fight in foreign wars. Even as he tightened sanctions against Japan in the late 1930s, he left our forces unprepared in the Philippines and elsewhere when Japan attacked.

#2  The nation was in the Great Depression. People were suffering. FDR put the economy as priority over the military. The factories, industries, infrastructure that resulted provided the military hardware needed in WWII. If the military had been prioritized instead of the he ravaged economy, the military would not have the industrial might that won a two front WWII.

#3  My comment at #1 of exasperation wasn't for Badanov but for the author Francis Senpa. My father and his brothers sisters and parents suffered the Great Depression. They credit FDR for restoring the economy and my father and his brothers fought and were all wounded on both WWII fronts.

#4  The economic policies pursued by Roosevelt were advertised as "pulling the country out of the depression" but it is not at all clear that they did not have the opposite effect, though I am sure that the intent was to help the economy.
The problemis that government interventions to help usually do have the opposite effect.

What used to happen in the 19th century, when there was a recession, was that industries , which had debt, which was most of them, went bankrupt That means the owners lost all their investment,. But the lucky onews who bought the businebankrupt business es had all the assets, without the debts, so that could quickly restart the businesses with a much better chance at success than the predecessors ha.
The old owners still had their brains and experience, and also could quickly recover using them.
FDR's interventions prevented this natural process and so led to eight years of suffering rather than one. His predecessor was no better and started in the wrong direction.
Roosevelt followed along the same stupid track.

FDR built industries, factories, schools which gave the workers hard cold cash. That cash was spent on the economy. It is called stimulus that time and again presidents still do when the economy starts sinking.

Biden Allows Thousands of Convicts to Evade Federal Prison After Pandemic
[Breitbart] Thousands of convicts, moved to house arrest last year, will be able to evade returning to federal prison even after the Chinese coronavirus pandemic has ended thanks to an order from President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ).

The opinion, issued by Assistant Attorney General Christopher Schroeder and published by Politico, will ensure that thousands of convicts who were moved to house arrest last year during the height of the pandemic never have to return to a federal prison cell.

Days before former President Trump left office, his administration issued an opinion that made clear convicts moved to house arrest would be recalled to federal prison after the pandemic’s national emergency order was ended.

“Should that period end, or should the Attorney General revoke the finding, the Bureau would be required to recall the prisoners to correctional facilities,” the Trump-era opinion stated. The policy, authorized by Trump’s CARES Act, has allowed more than 35,000 convicts to be in home confinement during the pandemic.

This week, Biden’s top DOJ officials revoked the return-to-prison provision under “intense pressure” from jailbreak advocates, according to Politico. Now, the thousands of convicts on house arrest, who would have previously been required to return to federal prison, will get to finish their sentences at home.

“We do not lightly depart from our precedents, and we have given the views expressed in our prior opinion careful and respectful consideration,” Schroeder writes:

Since late March 2020 and as of December 6, 2021, [the Bureau of Prisons (BOP)] has placed 35,277 inmates in home confinement through use of all its authorities. As of that same date, 4,879 prisoners were in extended home confinement under the CARES Act, and at least 2,8301 of this group would have to be returned to a correctional facility under the view expressed in our prior opinion if the emergency were to end immediately. [Emphasis added]

Based upon a thorough review of the relevant text, structure, purpose, and legislative history — and a careful consideration of BOP’s analysis of its own authority — we conclude that the better reading of section 12003(b)(2) and BOP’s preexisting authorities does not require that prisoners in extended home confinement be returned en masse to correctional facilities when the emergency period ends. Even if the statute is considered ambiguous, BOP’s view represents a reasonable reading that should be accorded deference in future litigation challenging its interpretation. [Emphasis added]

Wisconsin residents ask governor to remove DA who office set low bail for suspect in parade massacre
[JUSTTHENEWS] Milwaukee County residents are pushing Wisconsin Democrat Gov. Tony Evers to remove a district attorney for his role in connection with the person charge in the Waukesha Christmas parade killings having been released from jail weeks earlier on an acknowledged "inappropriately low" bail.

The defendant, Darrell Brooks, was reportedly released on $1,000 bail about 17 days before the Nov. 21 incident in which six people were killed and dozens more were maimed. The residents sent a complaint to Evers asking that he fire Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm who said in a statement that Brooks’ bail in connection with several misdemeanor and felony charges was "inappropriately low."

"I think it's in his best interest, and clearly, it's in the best interest of the people of southeast Wisconsin to fire John Chisholm and make southeast Wisconsin a safer place," Orville Seymer, who organized the complaint and runs Citizens for Responsible Government, told FOX6.

Evers said he'll take the complaint "seriously," according to the Daily Wire.

Chisolm has endorsed policies that recommend low bail amounts for some non-violent mostly peaceful criminal activity, the news outlet also reports.

Fate of dozens of migrants in Greek waters unknown, among them Kurds as Greece ramps up major search & rescue
[Rudaw] The fate of dozens of migrants colonists from a boat that is believed to have sunk due to a technical failure in the Aegean Sea on Tuesday evening is unknown, a Greek coasties said on Wednesday, with a Kurdish migrant activist telling Rudaw that he had evidence to suggest most of those on board were Kurds.

In the past seven years over 633,000 people from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq have migrated abroad.
"The survivors made it onto a dinghy that was tethered to the boat. Only two of them were wearing life jackets," coasties front man Nikos Kokkalas told the Greek state-run ERT television, AP reported on Wednesday.

The coasties added that the dead body of one unidentified man was recovered on Wednesday, and that 12 people have so far been rescued and transported to Santorini Island, with all believed to be from Iraq.

"We always presume the worst-case scenario, in this case that 50 people were on the boat," Kokkalas said, as he explained how the search and rescue operation began on Tuesday night when the Greek coasties received information that the engine on a vessel carrying migrants colonists had failed. If the coasties’s estimate proves correct it leaves at least 37 missing.

Ranj Peshdari, a Kurdish migrant activist, in an interview with Rudaw TV on Wednesday has given a higher estimate of the number of migrants colonists on the boat. He said "more than 70 migrants colonists" were on the boat en route to Italia, of which "more than 60" were Kurds, some of whom made contact with him on Tuesday night to tell him that their boat was leaking.

"[The] last time they called me they were still in the water and hung up the phone with a lot of shouting," Peshdari added.

The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) told Rudaw on Wednesday that the identities of those on board were not yet revealed. According to Hiwa Khidir, head of IFIR in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
, the boat sank in the Aegean Sea between Turkey’s Izmir and Athens.

Kurdish migrants colonists have suffered a catastrophic fate this year. A boat carrying 33 migrants colonists, most of them Kurds, capsized in the English Channel on November 24, in what the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has called the "worst disaster on record" in the Channel.

There are only two known survivors of the disaster, including a Kurd from the Region. Bodies of the sixteen identified Iraqi Kurds are to be returned to the Kurdistan Region on Friday, following the return of the body of Sirwan Alipour, an Iranian Kurd, to Tehran on Monday.

Thousands of other Kurds have traveled to Belarus in recent months with the help of Kurdish smugglers, hoping to reach western Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
in a search for jobs and opportunities they feel they cannot access at home where unemployment is high and political tensions, corruption, and instability leave them with little hope for their future.

According to data provided to Rudaw in October by the head of Summit (Lutka) Foundation for Refugee and Displaced Affairs Ari Jalal, in the past seven years over 633,000 people from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq have migrated abroad. Of them, over 260 have died on the way; a number that has significantly increased in recent months.

3 dead, dozens still missing after migrant boat sinks off Greece

[Al Ahram] Greek authorities ramped up a major sea-and-air search and rescue operation in the Aegean Sea on Wednesday after a migrant smuggling vessel sank, leaving at least three people dead and dozens reported missing.

The coasties said 12 people, all believed to be from Iraq, were rescued from an inflatable dinghy off the island of Folegandros in the southern Cyclades, 180 kilometers (112 miles) southeast of Athens.

The 11 men and one woman were taken to a hospital on the nearby island of Santorini as a precaution.

The bodies of three faceless myrmidons were recovered from the sea.

The survivors said they had been on a larger boat that took on water and sank overnight. Most said there were originally 32 people on the boat, but one told authorities there were about 50.

The coasties said a navy frigate joined four coasties vessels, 8 merchant ships, three smaller private vessels, three military helicopters and a military transport plane taking part in the search and rescue operation as night approached.

``The survivors made it onto a dinghy that was tethered to the (bigger) vessel. Only two of them were wearing life jackets,'' Coast Guard front man Nikos Kokkalas told state-run ERT television. ``We always presume the worst-case scenario, in this case that 50 people were on the boat.''

The coasties said the operation began Tuesday night after it received information that a vessel carrying migrants colonists had suffered engine failure and later began taking on water south of Folegandros.

US Muslim activist continues attacks on ‘Zionists’ as she begins sabbatical
[IsraelTimes] Zahra Billoo claims she is in the ’middle of a prolonged Zionist onslaught’ after criticism of comments she made about American Jewish organizations

A Moslem civil rights leader who stirred outrage when she said "polite Zionists" like Jewish federations "are not your friends," continued her critique of "Zionists" as she announced that she is going on a sabbatical.

"I am still in the middle of a prolonged Zionist onslaught," wrote Zahra Billoo, director of the the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
    ... the Moslem Brüderbund's American arm ...
, in a Facebook post on Sunday. She added that she believes there is an "Islamophobic, pro-Israel campaign" to "place moles in our organization and others."

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt criticized the post on Twitter on Monday, saying Billoo’s words "link Zionism with Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
In a Nov. 27 speech to a pro-Paleostinian group, Billoo named the ADL, Jewish Federations, "Zionist synagogues" and Hillel as organizations that practice this insidious form of "polite" Zionism.

"They will take your friendship and throw your Paleostinian brothers and sisters under the bus," she said. While noting that the named groups have stood with the Moslem community over issues including former US president Donald Trump
...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US...
’s proposed ban on immigration from Moslem-majority countries, she nevertheless concluded, "They are not your friends."

Greenblatt called those remarks "textbook antisemitic conspiracy-laden garbage... it sounds like something you would expect from white supremacists." The San Francisco-based office of the Jewish Community Relations Council and other Jewish groups also condemned Billoo’s comments.

In response, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, defended Billoo, saying Greenblatt was using "false claims of antisemitism to smear Moslems — especially Moslem women, for some reason — who challenge support for Israeli apartheid. And your dishonesty undermines the fight against real antisemitism."

Billoo’s sabbatical appears to be unrelated to the controversy. In her Facebook post on Sunday, Billoo said she had advocated for some time for staff to take sabbaticals and was ready to launch one when the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic broke. "Our organization and community needed us more than ever before," she wrote.

In 2019, Billoo was removed from the board of the Women’s March after just two days. She had in past statements likened the Israeli army to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
    terrorist group.

While CAIR mainly advocates for Moslems, it occasionally notes and speaks out against antisemitic attacks across the United States. On Tuesday, the group condemned the distribution of antisemitic flyers in Boise, Idaho, and in Montgomery County, Maryland, and also noted its past condemnation of similar incidents in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and North Carolina.

    Iraq
Iraq completes fifty-two billion dollar reparations to Kuwait
[Rudaw] Iraq has paid the final installment of $44 million to Kuwait, completing its total reparation payments to its neighbour, 30 years after its invasion sparked the Gulf War, Iraq’s central bank announced on Tuesday.

"The payment of the last remaining installment of the State of Kuwait’s compensation amounting to 44 million US dollars has been completed, thus Iraq has completed the full payment of the compensation amounts approved by the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Compensation Committee of the UN Security Council pursuant to Resolution no. 687 of the year 1991, with a total of 52.4 billion US dollars," read a statement from the central bank.

The Compensation Commission was established in 1991 under Security Council resolutions to process some 2.7 million claims for damages made by individuals, corporations, governments, and international organizations, after Saddam Hussein invaded the country in August 1990.

It approved 1.5 million claims totaling approximately $52.4 billion.

Iraq in 2014 halted payments to Kuwait due to the war against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) only to resume four years later in 2018.

The completion of the reparation payments come at an economically crucial time for Iraq, as the country seems to have been going through economic growth due to increasing oil prices.

A source from the Iraqi Central Bank earlier this month told the country’s state newspaper that the bank’s reserves have increased from $51.9 to $64 billion "due to a rise in the oil markets."

Record low oil prices during the pandemic last year contributed to a financial crisis in Iraq, but a recent boost in the oil market and the central bank’s decision in December to devalue the dinar have eased the crisis as the Iraqi government depends on oil revenues to cover its costs and pay the salaries of its civil servants.

The final installment of the reparation payments to Kuwait will ease another burden on Baghdad.

New Russian air defense technology can hit an enemy behind cover
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[RIA Novosti] Anti-aircraft artillery complex (ZAK) "Derivation-Air Defense", armed with a cannon of 57 mm caliber, will be able to hit the enemy with special guided projectiles, hiding from a direct shot in a trench, trench or behind a parapet, appropriate tests are underway, a source in the military-industrial complex told RIA Novosti.

"Due to the use of guided detonation shells and the latest fire control system developed by Uralvagonzavod ZAK-57" Derivation-PVO "will be able to destroy an enemy in shelters that is not available for direct hit. , trench, behind the wall of the building, any obstacles, "- said the agency's interlocutor.

He added that "earlier, preliminary tests of the" Derivation-Air Defense "on the use of guided detonation ammunition in the conditions of the landfill were carried out."

The source explained that the ZAK control system calculates the detonation time of each projectile so that it detonates at the desired point on the trajectory.

"As a result, the complex is capable of firing a series of shots, and the shells will explode in a chain in the air exactly above the enemy's trench, covering his infantry from above with shrapnel. Manpower, reliably sheltered behind the earth from direct fire, will be destroyed," he said.

"This function is also important for the destruction of small UAVs - a group of shells, at the command of the control system, will explode in the air at certain points of the trajectory in order to most effectively cover the drone with a field of debris.

He added that the detonation time calculated by the system is entered into each projectile using a programmer installed on the ZAK barrel next to the muzzle brake.

"The control system calculates the direction of flight of the projectile, its ballistics and the point of explosion by setting a timer for each projectile. As a result, the ammunition explodes on the flight path of the aircraft at the lead point or above the trench, or around the corner of the building, and so on," the source said.

The structure of the ZAK "Derivation-Air Defense" includes a combat vehicle equipped with a 57-mm automatic cannon, a transport-loading vehicle, as well as a repair and maintenance vehicle. "Derivation-PVO" is equipped with modern optics and electronics, allowing to detect, recognize and track fast-flying targets.

At the end of last year, Lieutenant General Alexander Leonov , chief of the Air Defense Forces of the Russian Armed Forces , said that state tests of the Derivation-Air Defense complex are scheduled for 2022.

    Afghanistan
Turkey 'Deeply Concerned' by New Wave of Afghan Migrants
[TOLO} 80% of female reporters have lost their jobs.
I'm sure it's "to spend more time with our families...and avoid the beatings"
Since the fall of the former Afghan government on the 15th of August, media in Afghanistan has been facing new challenges that has led to the closing of many outlets, and has caused many women reporters to lose their jobs, the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Afghan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA) said on Wednesday.

A survey conducted by RSF and AIJA shows that since August, 40 percent of media outlets in Afghanistan have ceased operating, and 80 percent of women journalists and media workers have become unemployed due to restrictions.

"A total of 231 media outlets have had to close and more than 6.400 journalists have lost their jobs since 15 August. Women journalists have been hit the hardest, with four out of five no longer working," the survey says.

According to the RSF and AIJA, of the 543 media outlets operating by the start of summer 2021, only 312 were still operating by the end of November. "More than four out of every ten media outlets have disappeared and 60% of journalists and media employees are no longer able to work. Women have suffered much more than men: 84% of them have lost their jobs," the survey report reads.

According to these two organizations supporting media, before the fall of the republic, in most of the provinces of Afghanistan at least ten private media were operating, but now in some regions there are no media outlets at all. "There used to be 10 media outlets in the mountainous northern province of Parwan but now just three are functioning. In the western city of Herat (the country’s third largest) and the surrounding province, only 18 of the 51 media outlets are still operating — a 65% fall. The central Kabul region, which had more media that anywhere else, has not been spared the carnage. It has lost more than one of every two media outlets (51%). Of the 148 tallied prior to 15 August, only 72 are still operating," the survey results show.

RSF and AIJA have said that new restrictions imposed on media outlets, especially female reporters, and the economic and financial challenges are the two main reasons behind the closing of media outlets and female reporters becoming unemployed.

"The dangerous 'Journalism Rules' open the way to censorship and persecution, and deprive journalists of their independence, forcing them to tell information and culture ministry officials what they would like to cover, get their permission to go ahead and finally inform them about the results of their reporting in order to be able to publish," the survey says.

"There is an urgent need to rein in the spiral leading inevitably to the disappearance of Afghan media and to ensure that respect for press freedom is a priority," said Reza Moini, the head of RSF’s Iran-Afghanistan desk.

Libyan MP Warns of War in Tripoli
[LIBYAREVIEW] Saeed Imgheib, a member of the Libyan Parliament warned of the outbreak of war in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, due to what he described as the "failed government policy."Imgheib asked: "Does Dbaiba, as the Minister of Defense and Prime Minister know that Tripoli is in danger? That the fuse of war in it is about to erupt, and that there are mourning tents that will be erected in its streets?"

"The reason for the war is not an attack by Haftar’s army, as he claimed and marketed previously, but because of his failed policies, his adherence to power, and the failure to fulfil his pledges. I ask God to protect our civilians in Tripoli and to take Dire Revenge on all those who are still paying the militias and mercenaries who terrorize the people at all times," he added.

Notably, Head of Libya’s "National Movement" party and Presidential candidate, Leila Benkhalifa rejected the postponement of the elections "in the long term."

Benkhalifa said that postponing the electoral process for a long period is "completely unacceptable," stressing that she does not accept delaying the elections "except by specific dates that are not subject to change again."

She explained that forming a new government at the present time would mean postponing the elections "for a long and unknown period," adding that "this is a confiscation of the right of the Libyan people, which I completely reject."

For his part, Libyan MP, Ali al-Tekbali said that the Parliament is ready to remove the current Government of National Unity (GNU) headed by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, and form a new national government.

Al-Tekbali said in press statements that the GNU’s mandate ends on 24 December, and it is not "legally" entitled to remain after that date.

The opposition MP pointed out that all existing bodies do not have the right to continue their work after the 24 December deadline. He called for "real" national reconciliation after the departure of the government and the appointment of a new one.

He also indicated that the PM may refuse to hand over power, "this is very possible, especially as he relies on militias to keep him in power."

Canadian Newspaper: Libyan PM Does Not Have University Degree From Canada
    Whoops!
[LIBYAREVIEW] The Presidential elections due to take place in Libya on 24 December are making waves in Canada. One of the three main candidates, and current Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba is accused of fabricating his master’s degree in civil engineering, which he claims to have obtained in 1992 at the University of Toronto. Three years earlier, he stated the same institution also awarded him an undergraduate degree in engineering.A few days ago, a Libyan activist, Husam El-Gomati, stated on social media that the diplomas were forged. The University of Toronto took several days last week to search its archives for Dbaiba’s degrees.

As Arabic names are often spelled in multiple way, the university attempted to locate records of the PM under at least six transliterations, to no avail. "We searched our records and found no entry matching the information you submitted to us," the university said in an email sent last Friday.

While the issue has caused a stir in Libya, it is unlikely to change the course of this controversial election campaign.

After years of civil war, Libya has experienced relative calm since the October 2020 ceasefire agreement. This fragile peace risks being shattered by political camps that do not recognise their mutual legitimacy.

"There is a risk that a faction will claim to have won while the others will dispute the legitimacy of its victory, which could lead to a kaboom of violence", predicts Claudia Gazzini, specialist on Libya within the International Crisis Group, an organization specialising in the study and prevention of conflicts. "To avoid this scenario, it would be good to postpone the election," she said.

With four days to go to the vote, no signs of election campaigns are visible on the ground, and several observers believe the vote will simply not take place.

"There is no one who wants this election, it will not take place," says Iman Bughaigis, an orthodontist who was involved in the 2011 revolt against Muammar Qadaffy
...a proud Arab institution for 42 years, now among the dear departed, though not the dearest...
    in Benghazi.

Dbaiba’s candidacy is contested because he currently serves as Prime Minister, which gives him an unfair advantage, according to his opponents. "He campaigns with money from the national bank, he distributes money to get elected," laments Bughaigis.

A factor further complicating this election is that the allegiances of the three main candidates are determined by the regions where they find their support. Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all. Actually, he is, but slowly...
, in the east of the country. Dbaiba in the west, and Saif al-Islam Qadaffy in the south.

Palestinian gunman opens fire at IDF troops in Ramallah, is shot dead
[IsraelTimes] Israeli army says Paleostinian shot at them from passing vehicle as soldiers entered city to search for suspects; Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, praises attack.

A Paleostinian gunman shot up Israeli troops Wednesday night from a passing car as they entered the outskirts of Ramallah, the Israeli army said. The soldiers returned fire, killing the assailant.

According to the military, Israeli soldiers entered the city’s al-Bireh neighborhood to detain several Paleostinians who had approached the boundaries of the nearby settlement of Psagot.

During the search, the gunman opened fire. The soldiers shot back, wounding him. The man, identified as 26-year-old Mohammad Issa Abbas, later perished in a Ramallah hospital, the Paleostinian Authority health ministry said.

It was not clear whether the gunman was connected to the suspects sought by the soldiers. No Israeli soldiers were maimed, according to the army.

Recent weeks have seen an uptick in Paleostinian attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians. At least nine incidents have taken place over the past month and a half, many of them in Jerusalem.

Hamas officials were quick to praise the reported attack on Wednesday night, pledging that more would soon follow. The terror group did not claim Issa as a member, however.

"The occupation must expect more such responses of resistance," Hussein Abu Kweik, a senior figure in the group’s West Bank division, told official Hamas television.

Abu Kweik added that the coming days would be "pregnant" with "resistance activities."

"Our people will not wave the flag of surrender and will continue to resist by every means," Abu Kweik said.
