[NPR] Cars have long had their own special place in America.
The wide open roads, the wind in your hair, the feeling of freedom when you drive. Cars have been celebrated in movies and eternalized in songs for evoking all that.
And right now, that feeling of freedom comes with a pretty hefty price tag. The average monthly car payment crossed $700 a month earlier this year, the highest on record, according to Cox Automotive/Moody's Analytics.
"I joke with people that every new car purchase is a luxury car purchase, I don't care what you're buying," says Ivan Drury, senior manager of insights at the car buying expert Edmunds.
However, cars aren't just a symbol of freedom.

[NPR] WASHINGTON — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Thursday launched a $1 billion first-of-its-kind pilot program aimed at helping reconnect cities and neighborhoods racially segregated or divided by road projects, pledging wide-ranging help to dozens of communities despite the program's limited dollars.
Under the Reconnecting Communities program, cities and states can now apply for the federal aid over five years to rectify harm caused by roadways that were built primarily through lower-income, Black communities after the 1950s creation of the interstate highway system.
New projects could include rapid bus transit lines to link disadvantaged neighborhoods to jobs; caps built on top of highways featuring green spaces, bike lanes and pedestrian walkways to allow for safe crossings over the roadways; repurposing former rail lines; and partial removal of highways.
Still, the grants, being made available under President Joe Biden's bipartisan infrastructure law, are considerably less than the $20 billion the Democratic president originally envisioned. Advocacy groups say the money isn't nearly enough to have a major impact on capital construction for more than 50 citizen-led efforts nationwide aimed at dismantling or redesigning highways — from Portland, Oregon, to New Orleans; St. Paul, Minnesota; Houston; Tampa, Florida; and Syracuse, New York.
Meanwhile, some Republicans, including possible 2024 presidential contender Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have derided the effort as the "woke-ification" of federal policy, suggesting political crosswinds ahead in an election season.
"Transportation can connect us to jobs, services and loved ones, but we've also seen countless cases around the country where a piece of infrastructure cuts off a neighborhood or a community because of how it was built," said Buttigieg, who was announcing the pilot program later Thursday in Birmingham, Alabama. He described Reconnecting Communities as a broad department "principle" — not just a program — to address the issue with many efforts underway.
"This is a forward-looking vision," Buttigieg said. "Our focus isn't about assigning blame. It isn't about getting caught up in guilt. It's about fixing a problem. It's about mending what has been broken, especially when the damage was done with taxpayer dollars."
The Transportation Department has aimed to help communities that feel racially harmed by highway expansions, with the Federal Highway Administration last year taking a rare step to pause a proposed $9 billion widening project in Houston, partly over civil rights concerns. That move likely spurred action in other places such as Austin, Texas, where environmental and racial justice groups recently filed a lawsuit to force the Texas transportation agency to better lay out the impacts of a proposed highway expansion there.
On the other hand....what can be done about it now? Akron is tearing down part of their Innerbelt, with an aim to making it public land, but they will likely never get enough use out of it to justify the expense. It will make some people feel better, true, but the people who lost their homes and their livelihoods passed long, long ago and are beyond comfort.

The offensive remarks have drawn condemnation from the Moslem world. Separately, Pakistain strongly condemned the heavy-handed treatment by the Indian authorities of Moslems who were registering a peaceful protest over the derogatory remarks.

Moslems have taken to the streets across India in recent weeks to protest against the comments by two members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Clashes have broken out between Moslems and Hindus and in some cases between protesters and police in several areas. Police in Uttar Pradesh arrested more than 300 people in connection with the unrest.
The BJP has suspended its spokeswoman Nupur Sharma and expelled another leader, Naveen Kumar Jindal, for the comments. Police have filed cases against the two and the government has said the comments do not reflect its views. Moslem groups have demanded their arrest, while some hardline Hindu groups label them as brave and nationalist politicians.
Over the weekend the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state, Yogi Adityanath, ordered officials to demolish any illegal establishments and homes of people accused of involvement in riots there last week, the BJP’s state spokesperson said.
The house of an alleged criminal mastermind of the riots, whose daughter is a female Moslem rights activist muppet, was demolished amid a heavy police presence on Sunday. Properties of two more people accused of throwing stones after Friday prayers were also demolished in the state.
The state government, which named Mohammed Javed as the main suspect in the Friday protests against offensive remarks, razed down his house on Sunday evening. Javed was arrested and booked under the Gangster Act.
On Sunday, Jindal said his family faced continuous threats and some of his followers said a crude bomb was defused near his residence in capital New Delhi.
In the eastern state of West Bengal, authorities enforced an emergency law prohibiting public gatherings in the industrial district of Howrah until June 16. BJP’s West Bengal president on Sunday staged a sit-in protest and accused neighbouring Bangladesh of inciting violence in the state.
[OneIndia] Maharashtra police have arrested the seventh accused and the criminal mastermind Sheikh Irfan Khan in connection with the murder of chemist Umesh Kolhe, said Nilima Araj, Police Inspector, City Kotwali PS, Amravati.
The accused have been identified as Sheikh Irfan Khan (32), Mudassir Ahmad (age 22), Shah Rukh Pathan (25), Abdul Thoufique (24), Shoaib Khan (22) Atib Rashid (22) and Yusufkan Bahadur Khan (44).
The crime branch of Amravati city police arrested Irfan Khan, a local resident, from Nagpur in the evening. He had allegedly hatched the conspiracy to murder Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe (54), who ran a medical shop in Amravati, and roped in others, said city police commissioner Dr Aarti Singh.
Kolhe was stabbed to death around 10.30 pm on June 21 near Ghantaghar in Shyam chowk area of Amravati. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Sali told news hounds that on the face of it, the killing was linked to certain posts that Kolhe had shared in WhatsApp groups, supporting Sharma who has been suspended by the BJP for making controversial comments about Prophet Mohammad.
Sali said some of the accused had watched Kolhe's movements for three days prior to the killing. Police arrested two of the accused on the basis of CCTV footage and also seized the knife used in the crime.
An NIA team visited Amravati on Saturday for probe. Earlier, the Union Home Ministry spokesperson tweeted that the probe has been handed over to the central probe agency. A team of Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of state police from Aurangabad also visited the city, said an official. Kolhe's killing had taken place a week before two men hacked to death a tailor in Rajasthan's Udaipur before posting videos online saying that they were avenging an insult to Islam.
The NIA is also probing the killing of the Udaipur tailor, Kanhaiya Lal. As per the police, Kolhe was stabbed in the neck by the assailants who rode a cycle of violence when he was returning home on his two-wheeler after closing his medical shop.
[OneIndia] The brother of the chemist who was allegedly killed over social media posts in Maharashtra's Amravati city supporting Nupur Sharma said that the deceased had shared some posts on WhatsApp group related to Nupur Sharma, but wondered whether the murder was committed only for forwarding those messages.
The chemist, Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe, was killed on June 21.
"My brother forwarded some messages about Nupur Sharma in some Whatsapp groups but we're not able to understand why was he killed because of 2-4 forwarded messages? He didn't forward them to anyone individually," news agency ANI quoted Mahesh Kolhe as saying.
Explaining the incident, he said, "On June 21 night, while my brother was enroute to his home after shutting his shop, some people attacked him & he was stabbed with a knife. When I reached there, he was already dead: Mahesh Kolhe, brother of Umesh Kolhe who was murdered in Amravati, Maharashtra."
Mahesh Kolhe said that the deceased never mentioned about death threats. "We're yet to ascertain the reasons behind his murder. He never told us about receiving any threats. He forwarded some messages on Nupur Sharma in some Whatsapp groups, but not to anyone individually: Mahesh Kolhe, brother of Umesh Kolhe who was murdered in Amravati," he added.
Meanwhile, the government on Saturday decided to hand over the probe into the killing of the chemist to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), as the case was suspected to be a terror incident after it appeared that the victim was hacked to death for social media posts in support of Nupur Sharma who was suspended from the BJP following her remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
A Home Ministry spokesperson tweeted that the probe of the case relating to the "barbaric killing" of Kolhe has been handed over to the NIA.
The federal probe agency would thoroughly investigate the conspiracy behind the killing and involvement of organisations and international linkages.
Khole's killing had taken place a week before two men hacked to death Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan's Udaipur, with a cleaver at his shop before posting videos online saying that they were avenging an insult to Islam. That case is also being probed by the NIA.
The Maharashtra Police have so far arrested five people in connection with the Amravati killing and are looking for one Irfan Khan, who runs an NGO and is alleged to be the prime accused in the case.
According to the police, Kolhe had allegedly shared a post on some WhatsApp groups in support of Nupur Sharma for her comments following which Khan is alleged to have hatched a conspiracy to eliminate him.
The incident occurred between 10 pm and 10.30 pm on June 21 when Kolhe was returning home on a two-wheeler after closing his shop.
A 54-year-old chemist was stabbed to death in Amravati city of Maharashtra, with the police suspecting that the accused committed the offence as the victim had allegedly shared a post on a social messaging platform in support of Nupur Sharma, whose remarks on Prophet Mohammad led to nationwide protests and global condemnation.

The incident was caught on camera. As per PTI, a group of lawyers kicked and slapped them while hurling abuses as they were being taken to a prisoner's vehicle after being produced in the court. The clothes of one of the four accused were also torn and the agitated lawyers raised slogans against Pakistain and demanded the capital punishment for them.
There was heavy security deployment on the premises, but as the accused were being taken out of the court, the group of lawyers attacked them before police personnel somehow managed to hustle them into a waiting prisoner transport vehicle.
Hours after they allegedly beheaded the tailor with a cleaver at his shop and shared the clip of the incidents, Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad were arrested by cops on Tuesday. In the clip, the accused claimed that they were avenging an insult to Islam as the victim had extended his support to Nupur Sharma through a social media post.
The two others, Mohsin and Asif, were nabbed on Thursday night for being involved in the conspiracy. They were produced before the court here amid tight security arrangements.
"The court ordered police remand till July 12," according to a lawyer.
There were heavy police arrangements on the court premises and several lawyers shouted slogans like "Pakistain Murdabad" and "Kanhaiya ke hatyaron ko fansi do" (give death sentence ...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead... to Kanhaiya's killers).

Following the incident, curfew was imposed in areas falling under the limits of seven police stations -- Dhan Mandi, Ghanta Ghar, Hathi Pole, Amba Mata, Suraj Pole, Bhupalpura and Savina.
"Curfew in the city was relaxed from 12 pm to 4 pm today. Relaxation from 8 am to 6 am will be given on Sunday," Udaipur Collector Tara Chand Meena said. The decision to relax the curfew was taken after reviewing the situation, official sources said.
With the peaceful conduct of Friday's Jagannath Rath Yatra, in which thousands participated, the administration decided to relax the curfew on Saturday, they said.
The BJP leader said that a financial assistance of Rs 30 lakh will also be given to the family of Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe who was killed in Amravati in Maharashtra.
On Friday, judges from the Supreme Court of India stated Sharma must apologise to the whole nation after the remarks intensified religious fault lines in India, angered Muslim nations and triggered diplomatic strains.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board called the incident "highly condemnable", adding that it was against both Indian law and Islamic strictures.

Sadiq Khan, the chief of the BJP's minority wing in the state said at a news conference that the party has no links to either of the accused. He said that the killing was a failure of the Congress government in Rajasthan.
The Congress alleged that one of the main accused in the brutal killing of a Hindu tailor in Udaipur is a BJP member.
"The killer of Kanhaiya Lal, Riyaz Attari is a member of the BJP," senior Congress leader Pawan Khera said while citing a media report.
"I am not surprised that you are peddling #FakeNews. The Udaipur murderers WERN'T members of the BJP. Their attempt to infiltrate was like the LTTE assassin's attempt to enter the Congress to kill Rajiv Gandhi," the BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya said while dubbing it as fake news.
Khera at a news briefing cited pictures and posts linking Akthari to the BJP leaders Irshad Chainwala and Mohammad Tahir.
"It has also come to the fore in the same disclosure that the main accused Riyaz Attari often participated in the programmes of Rajasthan BJP leader and former minister Gulabchand Kataria. Not only this, but pictures of the main accused Riyaz Attari attending the meetings of the BJP's Rajasthan minority unit are also in front of the world," Khera said.

Hunter Biden’s hard drive contained an enviable lineup of contacts for top US officials tasked with overseeing the US-China relationship, and at least 10 senior Google executives — raising new questions about the extent to which Joe Biden’s well-connected son could have leveraged his connections for personal profit, The Post has learned.
Many of the top-level government officials would have been in position to help Hunter Biden’s business aspirations in China during his father’s term as vice president from 2008 to 2016. Throughout that period, he infamously looked to capitalize from his family name and connections — often while his father conducted sensitive state business.
As for the Google braintrust, one former exec there told The Post that Hunter Biden sought the tech giant’s cash for Chinese ventures, and that several of the company’s bigwigs wound up working for the Obama-Biden administration during his father’s vice presidency.
Among the U.S. officials listed as contacts were John Kerry, who was Secretary of State; Max Baucus, U.S. Ambassador to China; Thomas Parker, a special advisor to the vice president for national security affairs; Sarah E. Kemp, who served as a commercial counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing; and Patrick Mulloy, former commissioner of the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Most declined to comment or failed to respond. Bruce Quinn, the Director for Implementation at the US Trade Representative office of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan — was also on the list but he said he had no idea why. He said he used to give seminars and that perhaps Hunter attended one of them.

[Townhall] The New York State Senate approved legislation that would ban concealed weapons from so-called "sensitive locations" and require gun buyers to provide their social media handles and character references.
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) signed the bill saying that to her, it's "the embodiment of what it means to be an American...in honor of our Fourth of July weekend, I look forward to signing the legislation."
With the new law, people who want to purchase a firearm license will have to provide a list of social media accounts they have maintained over the last three years, so officials can verify their "character and conduct."
Applicants will also have to prove they have the "essential character, temperament and judgment necessary to be entrusted with a weapon and to use it only in a manner that does not endanger oneself and others."
According to the measure, applicants will have to complete at least 16 hours of in-person training, and private businesses will be off-limits for firearms unless their owners post conspicuous signage indicating otherwise.
Hochul signed the bill into law shortly after the Democratic-controlled Legislature passed the proposal, calling it an "extraordinary session."

When I worked in Saudi (quite some time ago), there would be articles about twice a year in the press lamenting the backwardness of the Arab nations and wondering why it could be.

[Dawn] Demonstrators held rallies in several Spanish cities and in Rabat to protest over the deaths of 23 African migrants colonists who died in a crush trying to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla in northern Morocco.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Barcelona, Malaga, Vigo and San Sebastian and in Melilla itself to denounce migration policies and the "militarisation of borders".
In the Moroccan capital, a few dozen representatives of the Collective of Sub-Saharan Communities in Morocco and associations helping migrants colonists demonstrated in front of parliament calling for Rabat to "stop playing the role of EU policeman".
"We demand an end to the migration policy funded by the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... , the opening of an independent investigation and the return of the bodies to the families," activist muppet Mamadou Diallo said.
"The Europeans colonised us and took everything from us to develop. Today, if we go to them, it means that we have the right to leave," he said.
Moroccan prosecutors have initiated proceedings against 65 migrants colonists, mostly Sudanese, accused of having taken part in the mass attempt to enter Melilla from Morocco a week ago.

[Dawn] The country has started importing coal from Afghanistan and supplying it to the coal-fired power plants in different cities, an official told Dawn on Saturday.
"Coal from Afghanistan has started coming in a couple of days ago after the government directed the departments concerned, especially the Pakistain Railways, to make certain arrangements for a safe and rapid coal transport operation," the official said.
"At present, fewer than 3,000 tonnes of coal are being brought daily at the Khushhal Kot railway station. However, a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package... the supply is expected to touch 20,000 tonnes after the beginning of coal operation from Kundian in Mianwali district and Sibi in Balochistan ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... ," the official said, adding that the Sibi station would receive coal in trucks via the Wesh-Chaman border.
Earlier, reports suggest that the Afghan coal price more than doubled from $90 per tonne to around $200 after Pakistain decided to buy the commodity from its neighbour.

In a meeting on June 27, the government decided to import coal from Afghanistan for the coal-fired power plants due to the price hike of petroleum products.
The meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, also approved the import of high-quality coal from Afghanistan in rupees instead of dollars to save the country’s foreign exchange.
The premier was informed during the meeting that the import of coal, initially required for Sahiwal and Hub power plants, from Afghanistan would help Pakistain cut the annual import bill by $2.2 billion.

[KhaamaPress] The Pak Embassy in Kabul dismisses reports of an elderly Afghan man attempting suicide by running himself under a trailer tire after Pak border guards refused him entry into Afghanistan.
According to a statement issued by the Pakistain embassy in Kabul, the man in question was a Pak national and the father of Pak journalist Ali Shinwari.
Sources from inside the Pak embassy in Kabul informed the Khaama Press News Agency that the elderly man who did away with himself at the Torkham border in eastern Afghanistan was a Pak national.
The statement issued by the embassy of Pakistain after extending its condolences stated that "We (the embassy) have learnt that unfortunately father of a Pak media news hound came under a trailer at Torkham border today."
The Pak journalist, Ali Shinwari, also confirmed to the Pak embassy in Afghanistan that the man at the Torkham border was his father and had killed himself as a result of mental illness.
Earlier today, reports and videos of a man running into a car after Pak authorities demanded payment for allowing him entry into Afghanistan but he was unable to pay were widely circulated.
Some media outlets identified the man as an Afghan national while others relied on sources contending that the man’s visa had expired.

According to these money exchange dealers, several people have attempted to trade newly manufactured counterfeit money in the market over the past two months.
Counterfeit money, according to the money exchange dealers, decrease in the value of real money and an increase in prices (inflation) when more money circulates in the economy, which consequently disrupts the Afghan economy if not controlled.
In addition to that, they say the spread of fake US Dollar banknotes has harmed the market’s trust and interest in foreign currency exchange.
The new counterfeit dollars, according to some money exchange dealers in the market, are printed with a subtle difference from the original banknotes, which is not easy to distinguish. Most of the Founding Fathers didn't wear turbans, for instance
Previously, some said that the fake banknotes are very identical to the original banknotes, but there were still some differences that could help in differentiating them.
Currency counterfeiting and fraud are crimes that consistently threatens a nation’s economy and causes financial damage to its citizens.

Here's a better deal. Renegotiate the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo with Mexico. Return the coastal land from above San Diego and its I-10 corridor to just north of San Francisco to include the Bay. Since its a treaty modification, it will only require the approval of 2/3rd of the Senate.

Most attention has focused on the lone surviving member of the attack team, Salah Abdeslam. Others were found guilty of preparing the attacks, which killed 130 people, or hiding Abdeslam from police. Some are presumed dead in Syria and were tried in absentia. Some acknowledged helping the assailants but said they were unaware of the overall attack plot.
Some face charges in the related attacks in March 2016 on the Brussels airport and metro.
Here is a look at who they are, what they’re accused of and what sentences they were given in Gay Paree:
ACCUSED IN COMMANDO OPERATIONS Salah Abdeslam, 32: The only survivor of the 10 attackers who set out Nov. 13, 2015, wearing explosives vests for a series of coordinated attacks. Fabien and Jean-Michel Clain (presumed dead in Syria; tried in absentia): Two brothers who converted to Islam and fought in Syria-Iraq, suspected of making video and audio messages in which Islamic State grabbed credit for the attacks. For charges including complicity to terrorist murder, they were sentenced to life in prison with no parole.
Ahmed Dahmani, 33 (in prison in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... ; tried in absentia): Fought in Syria-Iraq, accused of supplying weapons and explosives and helping prepare the attacks. For charges including complicity to terrorist murder, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Oussama Atar (presumed dead in Syria; tried in absentia): Accused of helping organize the attacks from Syria and Iraq and recruiting attackers. For charges including directing a terrorist group, he was sentenced to life with no parole.
Obeida Aref Dibo (presumed dead in Syria; tried in absentia): Fought with Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, accused of arranging for attackers’ travel, direct involvement in organizing attacks. For charges including complicity to terrorist murder, he was sentenced to life with no parole.
Adel Haddadi, 34: Fought in Syria-Iraq, accused of agreeing to take part in an attack; sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges of criminal association with a terrorist enterprise.
Muhammad Usman, 29: Fought in Syria-Iraq, accused of agreeing to take part in an attack; sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges of criminal association with a terrorist enterprise.

Little-known fact: in addition to bombing their targets, the Doolittle Raiders were instructed to expend their machine gun ammunition on ground targets. They didn't have the fuel or the time to deviate from the flight plan. That was even compromised by the decision of taking off way too early because they feared their presence was compromised by a sighting by a Japanese fishing boat. They stripped the aircraft of those weapons for a wee bit more distance. Nice try.

^^ Met a relative's friend that helped prep the Doolittle aircraft at the Mid-Continent Airlines Hanger in Minneapolis.
The aircraft were stripped of armament to the point that they would have pretty much been sitting ducks for even one Japanese fighter aircraft. The weight saved was mostly used for fuel storage with some interesting jury-rigging.

The Japanese offensive was to push the Chinese far enough back to remove the potential for American bomber bases. The Americans had planned and built bases for B29s in China but the capture of Saipan and Tinian made logistics way much easier.
No. It didn't happen. I have that directly from the mouths of several of the Raiders, face to face with me.
The Japanese military at that time was embarrassed and mortified beyond words that the raid happened. They invented a great many offenses to explain their inability to prevent it and to punish the Raiders they captured.
I'd like to politely ask you to look things up again and reconsider your opinion.

Really? The machine gunning is described in the book "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo." They definitely had machine guns. They also made sure to drop their incendiary bomb over flimsy housing in a civilian area. That's what incendiary bombs are for.
What's with the sudden shame and excuses? I thought bombing and strafing civilian targets was OK.

Five total mentions of "machine gun" in the entire book. Only mention of firing at Japanese was one plane firing towards a Japanese cruiser on the way in. One mention was of stateside training flights. Two mentions on the same page were of after arriving in China and negotiating with guerilla fighters. Only other mention involved the ability to unmount the single machine gun on the plane if they were shot down and needed it to fight.
No mentions of schools or hospitals in Japan. All mentions of schools were of the ones the flight crew members attended growing up. Oh, and one mention of Japanese bombing a university in Shanghai. All mentions of hospitals either in the US or China.
I did this research in 5 minutes using the find in book feature of my Nook reader, using the 60th Anniversary re-release of Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. So, what I report here is what was found by that method. No accounting for hidden text in the Russian version, I am sure...

It's call "Thirty Seconds" for a reason. They're flying 'tree top level', the most fuel burning altitude, and as fast as they can for the approach. That's about as much time just to release the bomb load and keep moving.

Shame? Excuses? For what exactly. One of the most daring raids ever. They destroyed most of our base at Pearl. Then a few months later we bombed their capital city, boo hoo. They initiated the war and decades before 1941 for that matter. They proudly carried the torch of Total War, you know Nanking for only one. Their bullying death cult massacred civilians for the sport of it.

Looks like they might have kept the side gunner positions and the top dorsal turret. Wouldn't be able to do much ground strafing without the lower turret.
All I can say for certain is what the guy I met said, that they were pretty much stripped of armament for the mission.

LOL of course he doesn't confess to war crimes in the book. But it's a total lie what the other posters were saying, that machine guns weren't fitted.
They did indeed have orders to spray ground targets with machine gun fire. The one incident the author of the book confesses to is shooting up a yacht. The incendiary was definitely dropped on a civilian area, he definitely pleads guilty to that in print.
The fact that they indiscriminately shot at ground targets is part of history. I thought this was common knowledge, especially among people who apparently know history well. They didn't choose their targets, they just sprayed the ground with bullets, and what do you know shot up a school and other unarmed locations. Remember, the entire point of the mission wasn't to strike a meaningful blow, it was to spread terror. And what do those who commit acts of deliberate terror usually do?

That has been my argument as well, NN2N1. The counterargument has been that only those on the Left play such games — conservatives being more interested in getting a good price regardless of the company’s politics, so there is no downside for companies going Left — but it sure looks like that has changed.

That argument is biased. The left and the right are now philosophically opposed. Both, as Americans, are consumers and seek a good price. The left wants to impose their will upon others and seeks to have their ideals reflected as self verification they are justified. The right seeks to impose no ideals (yet) in defference to free thought and free expression, freedom. In that they see allowing freedom of the lefts philosophical ideology as self verification of right ideals. Freedom is exploited beyond reasonable boundaries. Radicals represent the lefts current expressionism, a byproduct is self identity as group identity. Very Un-American at it's core.
The so-called right in America wants only to get up to the trough and sup deeply. They are willing to pretend to ideals to get there. This leads to co-option. For America in particular and the world in general, this has led to their disastrous co-option by the neo-cons, who are not conservative at all but pathologically obsessed with Russia.
We need to leave conservatism behind, as it is a hollow shell. What we need to be is anti-totalitarian. Because have no doubt, the deep state is completely bought into the totalitarian model.
At the end of the day, you either believe you should run your own life, or you are hoping to the marrow to be part of the cabal running everyone else's lives.
