[IsraelTimes] US President Donald Trump’s new ban on travel to the US by citizens from 12 mainly African and Middle Eastern countries takes effect.
Trump had tied the move to the firebomb attack on a Colorado rally for the hostages held in Gaza despite the attacker, an Egyptian, not coming from a listed nation.
The new proclamation, which Trump signed on Wednesday, applies to citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. It also imposes heightened restrictions on people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela who are outside the US and don’t hold a valid visa.
The new ban does not revoke visas previously issued to people from countries on the list, according to guidance issued Friday to all US diplomatic missions. However, unless an applicant meets narrow criteria for an exemption to the ban, his or her application will be rejected starting today. Travelers with previously issued visas should still be able to enter the US even after the ban takes

The head of an anti-Hamas militia in Gaza was quoted on Sunday giving comments to an Israeli media outlet and a US nonprofit on his group’s operations in the enclave, in which he denied ties to Israel.
Defense sources confirmed on Thursday that Israel has been arming a criminal gang in the Strip as part of an effort to strengthen opposition to Hamas in the enclave. The group in question is led by Yasser Abu Shabab, a member of a large clan in southern Gaza. It has been linked in the past to smuggling operations with Egyptian jihadist groups.
The revelation led to intense criticism within Israel.
Ostensibly speaking to Army Radio in a series of text messages, the veracity of which has not been confirmed, Abu Shabab said: “We do not work with Israel. Our goal is to protect the Palestinians from Hamas terror. Our weapons are not from Israel — they are simple arms we collected from the local population.”
He added that “these rumors are meant to harm our reputation and create hostility between us, Israel, and Arab states.”
Abu Shabab denied having any meetings with Israeli officials, while saying that “if any coordination takes place it will be humanitarian, for the benefit of our people in eastern Rafah, and will be carried out through mediation channels.”
Meanwhile, the Center for Peace Communications, which bills itself as an organization committed to revealing the plight of those living under the rule of Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, published what it called an “exclusive first public statement” from Abu Shabab. It is not clear how it obtained the audio clip, which also could not be verified.
In it, the person identifying himself as Abu Shabab also denied “working with the occupation,” while calling on Hamas to “step down from government.” He asserted, “We have hundreds of families heading to the areas we control daily.”
Abu Shabab’s gang has been documented in recent days operating in an area near the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which is under Israeli military control.
In the footage, published online by Abu Shabab, members of the group can be seen wearing military-style uniforms with the Palestinian flag and the words “Counter-Terrorism Mechanism” emblazoned on them.
Sources have confirmed that Israel has been arming the gang with Kalashnikov rifles, including some that were seized from Hamas during the ongoing war.
The decision to start arming the group was made without the approval of Israel’s security cabinet, forgoing normal procedure. It was instead led by Israeli security bodies, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approval, the defense sources said.
The militia has been operating in Rafah, in an area under Israeli military control. Abu Shabab has claimed to be securing the humanitarian aid convoys entering Israel through the southern border crossings, although others have accused his gang of looting them.
According to Hamas sources who spoke with the Lebanese Al-Akhbar outlet, the militia comprises some 300 people, of whom Abu Shabab personally recruited around 50. They alleged that the remaining 250 members were recruited through the Palestinian Authority’s intelligence service.
The Hamas sources did not offer proof of Abu Shabab’s alleged ties to the Ramallah-based PA, and Al-Akhbar did not verify any of the terror group’s claims.
The group emerged in Rafah in May 2024, following the IDF invasion of the Strip’s southernmost city, the Hamas sources said. They told Al-Akhbar that the Al-Qassam Brigades have “already started carrying out direct assassinations” of members of Abu Shabab’s gang, and that its continued existence has fast become a “central issue” for the terror group.
According to the sources, some members of the group belong to an extremist Salafi faction that had run-ins with Hamas prior to the war as well.
This is not the first time that Netanyahu has been involved in or accused of propping up militias and terror groups to undermine a common enemy.
Various reports over the years have indicated that Israel’s policy under Netanyahu was to treat Hamas as an asset that could be used to weaken the Palestinian Authority.
[IsraelTimes] Hostage talks between Israel and Hamas remain at an impasse, two sources familiar with the negotiations tell The Times of Israel, after some of the mediators expressed optimism last week that Hamas would agree to soften its response to US special envoy Steve Witkoff’s hostage deal proposal.
Witkoff told hostage families he met with in Washington last week that he was optimistic about the chances for a breakthrough before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which began on Friday, according to a source present in the meeting. Even if such a breakthrough had been reached, though, the sides still need to hold a round of proximity talks to close final details, such as the exact parameters of Israel’s partial military withdrawal.
But Hamas is standing by its demand for clearer wording that prevents Israel from resuming the war if terms on a permanent ceasefire are not reached during the 60-day truce and hostage release deal that Witkoff has proposed, an Arab official from one of the mediating countries says.
The proposal crafted by Witkoff leaves open a window for Israel to resume fighting if talks on a permanent ceasefire do not bear fruit within 60 days.
Witkoff has been urging mediators to lean on Hamas to soften its demands, insisting that once a deal is reached on a temporary truce, the US will make sure that the ceasefire is made permanent, the Arab official says.
However, Hamas does not want to trust Witkoff’s word alone, pointing to Israel’s decision to resume the war in March, rather than hold talks on a permanent ceasefire, as a January ceasefire had stipulated, the Arab official says.
The Arab official maintains that the US to date has mistakenly accepted Israel’s aversion to a temporary ceasefire, arguing that Jerusalem needed to be pressured by Washington to change course.
“If Israel agreed to a permanent ceasefire, [it] could get all of the hostages back at once,” the Arab official says. “Instead [it’s] trying to fight until the last Hamas fighter, and this will never end.”
Asked whether pressure needed to also be placed on Hamas, the Arab official insisted that the mediators have been leaning on the terror group and that it has resulted in its willingness to accept a temporary framework.
But given the wording, Hamas is seeking to block Israel from resuming the war, the temporary truce would effectively be a permanent one, the Arab official acknowledges.
Still, a second source familiar says that mediators are continuing to push Hamas to soften the response it issued to Witkoff’s proposal late last month, which the US envoy called “unacceptable.”
Witkoff has called on Hamas to accept his proposal, so that proximity talks on final gaps can commence.
If enough progress is made in moving Hamas, Witkoff may be dispatched to the region to finalize an agreement, the second source says, adding that mediators don’t want the US envoy to make the trip unless they’re confident a deal can be closed.

The Israel Defense Forces published intelligence documents on Sunday, captured during operations in Gaza, that it said prove that the spokesperson for the Civil Defense Agency in the Strip is an “active terrorist” in Hamas and a member of the terror group’s military wing.
Mahmoud Basal “has served as a spokesperson for the Civil Defense for a long time and exploits his position to spread false and unverified information to international media outlets, falsely attributing war crimes to Israel and presenting distorted data,” the military said in a statement.
“This information has received media exposure worldwide and has severely distorted the reality on the ground,” the statement said.
The documents recovered by the IDF in Gaza show that Basal “is a terrorist in the Hamas terror group, and as part of his role, he serves the purposes of psychological warfare and propaganda,” according to the military.
The documents appeared to show Basal listed on a roster of operatives for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing.
The documents requested that the listed individuals, who it said were working in civilian agencies and as civilian staff at the time, be transferred to military duties, noting that their expertise is needed and that they will be assigned according to their specialties.
In a clip published by the IDF, Basal can be seen being interviewed on television and quoted by prominent media outlets like CNN, The Guardian and The Washington Post.
A Google search of Basal’s name shows that many major English-language media outlets have cited his statements when reporting on casualties in Gaza.
Citing documents found during its forces’ Gaza offensive, the IDF said Bassal was “an active terrorist” in the group whose October 2023 attack on Israel sparked the Gaza war. It issued copies of what it said were Hamas membership lists to the media. The military accused Bassal of serving Hamas’s objectives by spreading false and unverified information about its operations in Gaza.
“This is a false accusation,” Bassal tells AFP. “I do not work for any military organization,” he says, adding that the agency’s mission is guided by international law.
Beyond the IDF’s latest specific accusation against Bassal, all organizations operating in Gaza do so at the pleasure of Hamas since its 2007 violent takeover of the enclave.

An Israeli dronezap targeted a member of the Hamas ..not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,... terror group in the southern Syrian village of Beit Jinn on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces said.
Beit Jinn is some seven kilometers from the Israel-Syrian border, just outside a buffer zone currently controlled by the IDF.
No further details were given by the IDF on the target of the strike.
Hamas had a significant foothold in Syria until civil war broke out in the country in 2011, but has since reduced its presence. Its status in the country has become uncertain following the fall of Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs... in December, as the regime of Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, seeks to consolidate power, take arms out of the hands of non-governmental groups, and avoid confrontation with Israel.
After the Assad regime fell, Israel launched an aerial campaign against Syrian military targets to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of Death Eater groups, and seized parts of Mount Hermon in Syrian territory that was a buffer zone between the countries following the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Israeli military operations in Syria have since escalated, with Jerusalem saying it will not tolerate an armed Islamist presence in southern Syria.
Last week, Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s were carried out near the coastal city of Latakia and the IDF said its fighter jets targeted weapon depots used to store anti-ship missiles. One civilian was killed, according to Syrian state media.
The latest strikes have come even as Israel and Syria are reportedly in direct contact and have in recent weeks held face-to-face meetings aimed at calming tensions and preventing conflict in the border region between the two longtime foes.
The contacts mark a significant development in ties between states that have been in conflict in the Middle East for decades, as the US encourages the new Islamist rulers in Damascus to establish relations with Israel.
Last month, Sharaa confirmed indirect talks with Israel that he said were aimed at calming tensions.
Israel has also cautioned against swift recognition of the new government in Syria, expressing deep skepticism about Sharaa, who until recently had a $10 million bounty on his head from the US.
But the strikes and the criticism have substantially subsided in recent weeks.

The Israel Defense Forces said soldiers fired warning shots at people who approached its forces.
The deaths could not be confirmed, and Hamas figures do not distinguish between fighters and noncombatants.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s operations in the coastal enclave amid the ongoing war have been plagued by alleged deadly shootings for multiple days in a row.
It had earlier said it would open just one aid distribution site in central Gaza Sunday, after keeping its three sites closed the day before over what it said were threats from Hamas against its staff.
The bodies from the latest incident were brought to Nasser Hospital in Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis, which confirmed the toll. Paleostinian witnesses said Israeli forces had fired on them at a roundabout in the nearby city of Rafah as they went to get food from a site run by the GHF.
The military said it fired warning shots at people it said were suspects who had advanced toward its forces and ignored warnings to turn away. It said the shooting occurred in an area in southern Gaza that is considered an active combat zone at night.
The GHF did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It says there has been no violence at the sites themselves. But it also closed them temporarily last week to discuss safety measures with the Israeli military and has warned people to stay on designated access routes.
Witnesses said Sunday’s shooting occurred at around 6 a.m., when they were told the site would open. Many had headed toward it early to try and get food before the crowds.
Adham Dahman, 30, who was at Nasser Hospital with a bandage on his chin, said a tank had fired toward them. "We didn’t know how to escape," he said. "This is trap for us, not aid."
Zahed Ben Hassan, another witness, said someone next to him was shot in the head. He said that he and others pulled the body from the scene and managed to flee to the hospital.
"They said it was a safe area from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. ... So why did they start shooting at us?" he said. "There was light out, and they have their cameras and can clearly see us."
Though the UN has continued to distribute aid in the Strip while GHF finds its footing, it has complained that it has been unable to deliver much of its humanitarian supplies due to IDF restrictions on movements and because roads that the military designates for its trucks to use are unsafe and vulnerable to looters.
Israel and the United States accuse the Hamas terror group of stealing aid, while the UN denies there is any systematic diversion away from civilians. The UN says the new system is unable to meet mounting needs and allows Israel to use aid as a weapon by determining who can receive it and by forcing people to relocate to where the aid sites are positioned.
[IsraelTimes] The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation reports that it distributed another 17,000 boxes of food at three sites in Rafah and central Gaza today, a day after it said it was forced to shutter operations due to threats against its staff by Hamas operatives.
GHF says it also delivered 11 trucks’ worth of aid to community leaders for distribution in northern Rafah, as part of a pilot program that will see supplies delivered directly to Gazans, rather than forcing them to walk long distances and cross IDF lines in order to receive aid.
“We will be reviewing the operations and determining if this is a viable option moving forward,” it says.
Amid escalating tensions, the GHF reports it successfully delivered thousands of food boxes across Gaza “without incident” today, despite claims of IDF shooting near aid sites and explicit threats from Hamas against its staff.
“GHF is actively testing and adapting its distribution model to safely deliver the maximum amount of aid to the greatest number of people. We remain flexible and will continue to adapt distributions based on conditions on the ground, including road access, crowd pressure, and safety considerations,” continues the update, adding that the foundation is planning to open additional sites in northern Gaza.
John Acree, GHF’s interim executive director, adds, “Recently, we have started a women’s and children only lane to ensure they receive aid and today we piloted a direct-to-community delivery.”
Asked about the logistics behind the new delivery method, a GHF spokesman tells reporters that trucks delivered food “in population hubs outside of [the three aid centers], in order to reduce pressure on the main centers.” The spokesman specifies that “boxes are being distributed directly to people” as opposed to warehouses, to bypass Hamas operatives.
GHF said earlier today that it would open just one aid distribution site in central Gaza, after keeping the three sites closed yesterday over what it said were threats from the Hamas terror group against its staff members. The spokesman shares an Arabic-language threat from Hamas he says was received by GHF staff members: “This is your final warning: We are fully aware of everything you are doing, and all your movements are being monitored with extreme precision. You will not be forgiven for getting involved in projects that harm the dignity of our people and serve suspicious agendas under the guise of humanitarian work. Continuing down this path will have serious consequences, and you will bear full responsibility for the results of your actions. Stop now, or else.”
Addressing safety and security at the sites, GHF says, “Aid distribution at all three sites proceeded without incident.”
For multiple days in a row last week, and again this morning, there have been unverified reports of deadly shootings by IDF troops at and near the aid sites run by the Israel- and US-backed organization.

According to the outlet, the presence of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon has proven relatively effective in beating back the threat of Hezbollah and keeping the terror group from rearming itself, making redundant much of UNIFIL’s operations in the region.
Sources familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel that the US has not yet made up its mind regarding its future support for UNIFIL, but that it wants to see major reforms, which could mean pulling support.
As UNIFIL’s mandate is granted through a UN Security Council resolution each year, the US could simply veto the next resolution, due to be put forward in August.
UNIFIL has been operating in southern Lebanon since 1978, when it was created to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area following the end of a conflict between the two nations.
The UN peacekeeping force expanded its mission following the 2006 Second Lebanon War between Israel and Hezbollah, allowing peacekeepers to deploy along the Israeli border to help the Lebanese military extend its authority into the country’s south for the first time in decades.
Aimed at ending the 2006 war, Resolution 1701 also called for a full cessation of Israeli-Hezbollah hostilities and the disarmament of Hezbollah. UNIFIL’s mandate has been renewed annually ever since, although critics have questioned the efficacy of the force.
Following the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which put an end to more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah, including two months of all-out war, the Lebanese army moved into southern Lebanon to enforce the terms of the ceasefire, which itself is based on Resolution 1701.
The resolution requires Hezbollah to withdraw its fighters north of the Litani River — about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the border — and dismantle all military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam told the Wall Street Journal last month that his government had achieved 80 percent of its objectives regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah and other militias in the country’s south.
At the same time, the IDF has continued to launch targeted strikes on Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure, alleging violations of the truce agreement. According to the IDF, over 180 Hezbollah operatives have been killed in that time.

More than a month later, Jimmy Friesenhahn, a 44-year-old Marine combat veteran, is fighting for his life in a San Antonio hospital after being shot while working as a security guard at the El Patio Sports Bar early on the morning of May 4. Police arrested Wilmer Vladmir Ortega Ruiz, a 29-year-old man who entered the U.S. illegally, for the shooting, News4SA reported.
As the suspect entered the sports bar, Friesenhahn attempted to search him for weapons. The two men struggled after the Marine allegedly found a handgun in the man’s pocket.
During the struggle, police say Ortega Ruiz shot Friesenhahn multiple times, striking him twice in his ballistic vest and once in the neck. The neck wound left the 14-year Marine Corps veteran paralyzed from a spinal cord injury and unable to speak, the article reports. Following the May 4 shooting, he has undergone six surgeries.
The New York Post reports that Friesenhahn’s family says Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales’s Office is “soft-peddling the charges” after they reportedly let the attacker walk free on four prior arrests.
Friesenhahn is the father of a five-month-old girl and served in the Marine Corps for 14 years — including a combat tour in Iraq.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers placed an immigration hold on Ortega Ruiz due to his lengthy criminal history and record of no-shows on court appearances, the Post report states.
The New York Post reports:
Ortego Ruiz was first arrested in San Antonio and charged with a DWI in October 2020, according to court records. He was let go on a personal recognizance bond, but failed to show in court.
The Bexar County District Attorney’s office then downgraded the DWI charge to obstructing a passageway.
Ortega Ruiz pleaded guilty to that charge, but violated the terms of his probation and was arrested for a second time in August 2023.
He was let go again after posting a $1,500 bond amount and failed to show up in court for a later hearing.
The illegal migrant got collared a third time in September 2023 and bonded out for $1,500, again failing to show in court at a later hearing.
He was then arrested for a fourth time in November 2024 and sentenced to time served nearly three weeks later.
Ortega Ruiz was also allegedly the center of an assault investigation in which his girlfriend reported he physically attacked her, but he had fled the scene before cops arrived, law enforcement sources told The Post.
Friesenhahn’s brother-in-law Emmanuel Martinez told The Post, “Jimmy’s sacrifice saved people because there’s stories that the guy was going to go inside and do something in that place.”
His family set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Friesenhahn’s ongoing medical expenses and recovery.
As an illegal alien, Ortega Ruiz was prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm. Texas law also prohibits carrying a gun into a bar.

[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] A 21-year-old undocumented Democrat from Honduras with a history of drug distribution has been sentenced to over six years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl in Portland, Oregon.
Bexon Javier Calix-Rivera, who was unlawfully residing in the city, received a 78-month prison sentence followed by four years of supervised release on Thursday, per the Department of Justice.
Calix-Rivera pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl on March 12 of this year. According to court records, Calix-Rivera was first arrested in January 2023 after officers arrived at the scene of a drug deal in Portland. There, officers searched his vehicle and found thousands of fentanyl pills along with significant quantities of powdered fentanyl and heroin intended for redistribution. He was booked on state charges but released the next day.
In May 2023, Calix-Rivera was again detained after reports of a man threatening someone with a firearm in downtown Portland. Despite being arrested, he was released on his own recognizance.
Days later, officers observed him wielding a hatchet and conducting drug deals. He was apprehended by officers who recognized him from past encounters, but was once again released the same day.
''Officers attempted to detain Calix-Rivera, but he fled on foot,'' the Department of Justice said in a blurb. ''When officers apprehended Calix-Rivera, they seized fentanyl powder, a firearm, and $755 in cash. PPB officers booked Calix-Rivera in the Multnomah County Jail, and he was released the same day.''
In June of last year, a federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment charging him with possession of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine with intent to distribute, as well as possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense.

[Garowe] Puntland security forces, supported by helicopters, have launched a major operation in the Sadow Cave area near Sadow Well in the Baalade Valley to root out remnants of fleeing ISIS militants, officials said on Thursday.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by Puntland authorities to combat the Islamic State affiliate, which has maintained strongholds in the Cal Miskaad mountains since 2015. Security sources confirmed that Puntland troops have regained control of large swaths of territory previously held by ISIS fighters during a successful six-month counter-terrorism campaign.
“The current operation specifically targets pockets where surviving militants are believed to be regrouping,” a senior Puntland security official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters. “We will not allow them to re-establish bases in Puntland.”
