#1 Unrelated, but if you thought Chicago had the market cornered on prohibition era bootlegging, here's a fascinating book on Williamson, County (Herrin, IL) and vicinity.

Sitting on the running board in white shirt with pistol, Jewish, Russian born Shachna Itzik 'Charlie' Birger, the last man hanged in Illinois.

Army records show Birger enlisted in St. Louis on July 5, 1901 and was assigned to Company G of the newly formed 13th Cavalry Regiment, which was stationed in South Dakota. Birger was described as a good soldier and was honorably discharged on July 4, 1904 at Fort Mead, South Dakota.

Birger was burried at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery in the University Park area of St. Louis, Missouri.
