#1 So, how about a little Rantburg University education concerning Yemen? This entire week, we're getting posts about numbers of rebels killed in Yemen. So, what is going on in Yemem? Sorry, I got lost a couple of weeks, with my Mother's death, and this week, posts are coming in about Yemem killing lots of rebel guys.

Is this good or bad? I'm hoping for good!

#2 Sherry, Yemen is a small, mostly desert country on the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders on Saudi Arabia and Oman. The lower half was once part of the British colony of Aden, with its capital in the port city by the same name. The southern area underwent several name changes following the pull-out of the British - first South Arabia, then Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen, finally Yemen Arab Republic. Yemen joined Egypt and Syria briefly in the United Arab Republic. There was a lengthy civil war between the northern Kingdom of Yemen (capital Sa'naa) and the southern Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen (Aden). The peace treaty resulted in the current country (Yemen Arab Republic). There are still tribal sqabbles, confrontation with Saudi Arabia over the undesignated northern border, and with Oman over the eastern border. The principal occupations are fishing, smuggling, and nomadic herding of camels and goats. The political background is totally confusing, with people changing sides frequently.

#3 One of the halves of Yemen was communist, Sherry dear, the other totalitarian. (I'm not sure which). The totalitarian half is where the qat/khat/dribbly green hallucinogenic leaves are chewed by the menfolk, so nothing gets done. I'm forever grateful that Mr. Wife refused the offered assignment there, shortly after Yemen re-united, and he was once again grateful to have the excuse of my religion to do so.
