#1 Hmmmmm. Maybe...

The identity of al-Qaeda’s Iraq leader has been the subject of debate and his capture and death has been announced before. Al-Maliki said this time authorities got the right person and that authorities seized hand-written letters, computers, and other evidence to prove it. The terrorists were in direct contact with Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda’s second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Maliki said.

#2 U.S. confirms...

BAGHDAD – The U.S. military confirms the two leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq have been killed in a joint operation with Iraqi forces.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced the killings of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri earlier Monday at a news conference in Baghdad and showed reporters photographs of their bloody corpses.

U.S. forces commander Gen. Raymond Odierno says the deaths are potentially the most significant blow to the terrorist organization since the beginning of the insurgency. The U.S. military said they were killed in a nighttime raid on their safehouse Sunday near Tikrit, the hometown of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

#3 Could be ( though I certainly have no way to know ) a sign that things are getting less chaotic in Iraq, making it easier for the good guys to get the intel they need to find these turds. If so, it goes to the argument that an incremental approach can pay dividends...

#4 A U.S. soldier was killed during the assault when a U.S. helicopter crashed, the military said in the news release.

The operation took place Sunday in al-Tharthar, north of Baghdad, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki announced Monday. It involved missile strikes and ground forces. The two men were in a house and then hid in a hole, where their bodies were found by security forces, he said.

#5 The terrorists were in direct contact with Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Maliki said.

Turn the computers and cell phones over to our cleverest computer people, and wait for the fun to start. A hearty Well Done! to Iraq's intelligence team!

#6 Sounds legit this time. They have bodies to display (as in the case of Saddam's sons), and the PM is confident enough to make the announcement. This could be big deal.

#10 I listened to the news report of this on the radio on the way back from lunch. Our remedial VP apparently had a mini-press conference where he praised the Iraqi national forces on all they did in this operation.

Then the newsreader mentioned in closing that there was one US forces casualty/fatality from the operation....

It's nice that the Iraqi forces have come this far, but to hear that sort of thing, from the party that p****d on our leg for eight years while we tried to get the Iraqi forces that far, all the while telling us it's impossible and wrong to try.... and not giving credit where credit is due... is irritating.

#11 The U.S. military said the early Sunday raid that killed the two al-Qaida leaders was launched after intelligence gathered during joint operations over the last week led security forces to the elusive leaders' safehouse about six miles (10 kilometers) southwest of Tikrit.

Al-Maliki said ground forces surrounded the house and that rockets were fired from the air. The U.S. military said an American UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed during the assault, killing one U.S. soldier and wounding three others; the crash was not believed to have been caused by enemy fire.

The two al-Qaida leaders were inside the house. Al-Masri's assistant and al-Baghdadi's son, both suspected of being involved in terrorist attacks, also died in the raid and 16 other suspects were arrested, the military said.

#12 I sure hope they didn't wake up any civilians or anything with all the noise. We could lose more hearts and minds that way.
