It would've been so much better if they trampled him, shuffled him about as he moaned, and shat on him in his final moments before high fiving and stomping away.

I can imagine, that if they're anything like other herd animals, that the elephants (both male and female - because that's still okay to call them those genders in elephant society), the 'Herd Agitation Level' is pretty high and pretty easily spooked into a stampede.
