#1 There is some piece of this we are not getting. I like to think that if an officer has an opportunity to rescue captured personnel that he would ALWAYS make that decision. Is it possible that the yahoo on the ground did not recognize his authority to do so? On the FLIP side any American commander who had a chance to rescue captured personnel and did nothing would be relieved of duty (or one would hope). Happy ending, everyone came home.

#2 The other important point is that NOT attempting a rescue invites more kidnap attempts.
