#1 California governments need to grow and hire more people in order to combat unemployment. And raise taxes to pay for the expansion. Then more businesses will close or leave, leading to more unemployment, more government expansion, more taxes. Cycle down the drain.
Of course the Federal government is using the same model. As California goes, so goes the Nation. Hmmm.

#3 Does anyone think that if there were State and Federal benefits for legal residents only that there might be some reduction in expenses? Or if there might be some income derived from offshore drilling (plus reduction in fuel costs)?

#4 It was only this crisis that would force the idiotic Cal legislature to wake up to reality. The cuts have to be made. The state government is doing far too much. I'm actually amazed that a dem said it should reduce its scope. That is encouraging.

#5 tipover, we tried passing a ballot measure back in the days of Gov. Pete Wilson that would have done exactly as you suggest, Proposition 187. Actually, the voters did pass it but the courts found it unconstitutional. Google it and you will find some very interesting things.

Former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg, a Democrat who has joined a group seeking to change the state's budget system, said too many services that used to be performed by local governments have been taken over by the state because of a landmark 1978 ballot measure that drastically limited property tax revenue.

Hertzberg sounds like he's gearing up to campaign against our beloved Proposition 13 which Kaliphornia voters passed overwhelmingly in 1978. Before then people, many seniors on fixed incomes, were literally being taxed out of their homes. But the intention of Prop 13 was not to shift the spending from local government to Sacramento. The intention was to stop the spending and to stop the madness.

Health care for poor children? You know, I feel for those kids. But their parents need to be responsible. Unwed mothers, deadbeat dads, illegal aliens...they need to pay. They need to calculate the cost of having a child before they have the child. If they started a voluntary fund where sympathetic people could contribute toward the health care of indigents that would be one thing. Then if we thought the system was corrupt or inefficient we could withhold our contributions. But to tax us for it is robbery.

As for the prisoners, I think we could all take a lesson from Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County Arizona. We have plenty of desert in this state where tents for the prisoners could be pitched and surrounded with electrified concertina wire. Feed them boloney sandwiches, issue them pink boxer shorts and do NOT provide them with air conditioning.

#6 Like I said earlier there are 450 agencies and boards, we could cut 1/3 of those with little impact on the public and no cuts in schools, fire, or prison systems. A lot of these agenicies are quasi-retired jobs for ex-pols. Carol Midgen (D)rug Addict - Marin) serves on they "integrated waste mangament board" there job overlaps about a dozen agencies which in state government means they don't even have to come toi work.

#7 Simple way: proof of citizenship and English competency required before receipt of any government aid.

That cuts the rolls massively.

#8 Can't have that. It's just un-liberal.
