Tunisia activists launch Gaza-bound convoy in 'symbolic act'

Organisers said the nine-bus convoy was not bringing aid into Gaza,
but rather aimed at carrying out a "symbolic act" by breaking the blockade on the territory described by the United Nations

The "Soumoud" convoy, meaning "steadfastness" in Arabic, includes doctors and aims to arrive in Rafah, in southern Gaza, "by the end of the week", activist Jawaher Channa told AFP.
It is set to pass through Libya and Egypt, although Cairo has yet to provide passage permits, she added.

"We are about a thousand people, and we will have more join us along the way," said Channa, spokesperson of the Tunisian Coordination of Joint Action for Paleostine, the group organising the caravan.
Greta Thunberg and her fellow selfie jihadis were intercepted just before they arrived in Gaza, and are now being sent home by Israel But I was reminded of Vittorio Arrigoni, an Italian activist-journalist with the International Solidarity Movement, who won his way into Gaza in 2008, and stayed on, doing all the activist things including reporting on the 2008-9 Gaza war … until 2011, when the ungrateful local Al Qaeda affiliate kidnapped him, and within 24 hours murdered him by hanging. Perhaps Israel should let the Tunisians through, to enjoy in full measure all the pleasures of Gaza for themselves.

The overland effort — organized independently but moved up to coincide with the high-profile maritime flotilla that was seized by the Israeli Navy Monday — is made up of activists, lawyers, and medical professionals from North Africa. It plans to traverse Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt before reaching Rafah, the border crossing with Egypt that has remained largely closed since Israel’s military took control of the Gaza side in May 2024.
