about 260 homicides in first 6 months of 2019

not all homicides are murder, quite a few are self defense or accidental; I'm not sure if the author knows this

a huge share, probably the majority, of homicides in Chicago (and many other places) is gang related or crime related and the number of homicides in a given week depends a lot on the degree of intra gang hostility that week and how much the police are trying to control it
