#1 So the boast from the Pinoy cops that JI (and Abu Sayyaf) are short on funds and begging the Al-Q guys in Soddy/Yemen for money might be credible?

#2  Yep. MILF is a self-sustaining operation, but Abu Sayyaf and JI both require a steady influx of cash from either Indonesia or the Magic Kingdom to stay in business. If the Indonesian JI have cut them off at the hip, then Soddy "aide workers" are their only hope.

Recall, bin Laden had to personally finance the attack on the Australian embassy in Jakarta even though it was a pretty simple operation - Azahari and Top couldn't get any of the local faithful to cough up any cash.

#3 Fat lot of good that embassy bombing did too...John Howard got re-elected with an increased majority. I'm glad Binny wasted his own cash on that operation.

I'm also glad to hear that Al-Q has been weakened in the Philippines...but it seems they are building strength in Africa instead.

#4  It's only a temporary solution to a current extent - it's not like the JI who broke away from Azahari and Top are any more benign from our perspective, they just want to take over Indonesia politically and think that JI's buying at the international terrorism game detracts from that goal.

Keep in mind that JI is older than any of the other Islamist movements we've seen to date except the Muslim Brotherhood. It was formed back during World War 2 by the Japanese as the Indonesian Hezbollah after they took over the country from the Dutch. So they've been at their crackpot national domination game for awhile now and don't want al-Qaeda ruining what they've spent decades trying to build.

#5 Great note Dan. Most forget that the MILF got major support from Momar Kadafi, who also paid 25 million dollars to the ASG for a 13 million ransom, robot on Jolo with the euro trash hostages. Momar's embassy staff hang out down there promoting peace and good will. All the while supporting all those well meaning muzzie NGO's with hard cash. I find it hard to believe they are hurting for cash, more likely they are too stupid to get the bombs right without blowing themselves up or telegraphing it to the world.
