#3 There were some rumors (conspiracy theories they are called today) that Churchill sympathized with the farmer-soldiers, which led some to believe he was permitted to escape in order to tell their side of the story to the British upper crust and politicians.

Of course you can hear or read about anything.
Finding the actual evidence of the theory is something else again.
