#1 This is fitting expectations. Large numbers of Taliban are being booted out of their sanctuary in Pakistan. No longer having sanctuaries in Afghanistan, if they are on their own or in small groups, local villagers will kill them or turn them over to the government. So they are forced to band together in large brigand groups, which make swell targets for conventional attack. In essense, they are in that worst of situation, a non-conventional army forced to fight conventional battles against a vastly superior force.
