#1 One rule of thumb that has never failed me yet: If the headline calls the cleric/leader/whatever "controversial", it means that they are one of the nasty ones.

If the headline calls them "outspoken", it means that they are one of the (few!) reasonable ones (eg Rantburg article from Aug 28, "Outspoken Sunni cleric murdered in Baghdad")
