#2 Wonder how much enlightened self-interest will be evident as they see the plummeting demand for oil and the concomitant downward spiral in the price of a barrel of crude.

#3 I did not get past paragraph 2 before deciding this writer doesn't know what he is writing about. Maybe the rest is ok, but the Depression was most certainly not confined to the US.

#4 In the 1970's, under President Jimmy "peanut" Carter, the US sneezed, and everyone else in the world caught a cold. Every nation in the world (except those on a Communist "controlled economy") suffered inflation, in some cases as high as 50%. This is reflected in the cost of 1st-class postage worldwide, and I'm sure in other things as well, such as petroleum products and food.

The current "crisis" has been brewing for several decades. It could be stopped dead in its tracks, but doing so would bankrupt dozens of "nations" around the world, and causing a modest recession here in the US. The current "crisis" is a coming-due of the wages of stupidity, arrogance, and greed. Our government is willing to throw good money after bad, but NOT to do the one thing that would actually solve the problem - let a bunch of people in "high places" find themselves broke. That solution would also bring down several houses of cards in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, which is what worries the striped-suit crowd and drives the demand for a "bailout".

#5  the 1929 Crash. The Depression was confined to the US and the world was not as globalized as it is today. Yeah that is nonsense. It was the dismantling of globalism that lengthened and deepened the crisis back then and the entire world was effected. In fact it was the economy in shambles that led Hitler into power so it was clearly a problem in Germany.

#6 which is what worries the striped-suit crowd

Don't you mean "striped pants"? Or was it a a slip to wishful thinking (striped suits = prison suits).
