#1 The old state supported terrorism of the late 20th Century has been superseded by the Cartels, be they south of the border or in the hinterlands of the Hindu Kush. We see the handwriting in blood of their works, but their faces are shrouded by the failure of old media.

#2 It's probably time again to remind people of two relevant sources on this:

the Army War College paper that shows why gangs act like insurgencies

and Moises Naim's book Ilicit: How Smugglers, Traffickers and Copycats are Hijacking the Global Economy

#3 And Barry is getting really, really bunched up about Arizona exercising its State's right to try to control the problem on the U.S. side via legislation and enforcement.

#4 Organized crime is now the biggest industry in the world, and has gone far to criminalize large portions of the state in Russia, Ukraine, the former USSR's 'stans and now Mexico (you could also make the case that the Iranian state is criminalized).

We have a failing and criminalized state on our doorstep. Even before it was failing, that state exported its failures northward, devastating our schools, hospitals, social services and state budgets in order to harvest up to 10% of its GDP in hard currency repatriations each year.

And now that failing state is exporting civil war.

Why is our political class ignoring this? I'm not a gun owner and I'm not going to take up arms, but clearly our political class refuses to address the crisis in any serious or credible manner. What can law-abiding citizenry do about this debacle?

#5 buy a gun like the rest of us and protect your property, family, and friends. The political class will do nothing but protect themselves

#7 A columnist in the El Paso Times wrote this today: we haven’t seen the worst yet. After Friday’s attack, the only thing that we can expect is an intensifying of violence and consequently the loss of many, many more lives. The question is until when.

#8 lex---you cannot depend on the govt to take care of you. When seconds count, the police will be there in minutes.

  • Get training. You will need to develop the mindset to defend yourself and your family. 75% of self defense is mindset and judgment.

  • Select the appropriate weapons that fit your situation and needs. Get help in this.

  • Get adequate ammunition on hand.

  • Develop a plan of self defense and survival for you and your family.

  • Learn about Jeff Cooper's color codes of awareness and have them in mind every day first thing when you leave your home in the morning.

#10 There is nothing worse than a cold steel barrel of a gun up against your head while the rest of a gang is having their way with your family or friends. It is amazing what you can prevent when they know you are packing your own heat.

#11 Being armed can help prevent a lot of crime. I went to a funeral of a 42 year friend in Knoxville who was shot and killed in the parking lot of a local hospital by a crazy ba$tard. He had two guns: both illegal and a history of mental illness. He was not taking his meds. He thought a doctor at the hospital had implanted him with a microchip at the direction of the CIA back in 2001 during an emergency appendectomy. She never had a chance.
