 File under: al-Qaeda

#1 Hakim Hawala has had plenty plenty time to lace up his trainers and skedaddle to somewhere safe.

#2 Lots of people are drowning in debt but they still buy things. Shazaam could have gotten the money from an FTO with deep pockets from zakat from the Gulf states, but lately they prefer Westerners with passports who can finance their own operations and who have light skin and mild accents (Maj. Hasan, Shazaam, Najibullah Zazi, et al).

Ultimately it doesn't really matter whether he paid for it "himself" or got the money through overseas wires. Either way it's the homebase al Qaeda that's calling the shots.

Other reports have said that the operation only cost seven thou. Bear in mind that the Taliban has millions of dollars in ushr (from poppies) and zakat (from the Gulf). Seven thousand, whether that was equity he drew on or money from a foreign account, is a drop in the bucket.

You have to go after hardcore Muslims, not a few thousand dollars of suspicious transactions amidst a global economy with billions of dollars in suspcious transactions.

#3 You have to go after hardcore Muslims

You have to realize it isn't "a handful of extremists" but every single Muslim in the World---good luck!

#6 AD, You might want to thicken your skin by a layer or two and dampen your ego by 3db. Not every reply is a challenge to your manhood (or womanhood).

#7 Not all Muslims are terrorists, but almost all terrorists are Muslim!

#8 Yet, as CBS News first revealed, Shahzad came under scrutiny by the Department of Homeland Security for bringing into the U.S. more than $80,000 in "cash or cash instruments" between 1999 and 2008.

Might just be his dad secreting away ill-gotten gains (bribes and money taken out from government accounts) in an overseas locale. Not everyone has enough scratch to establish a Swiss bank account. The kind of money he spent on this attack might even be personal savings - the dollar amounts were so minimal. What's amazing is that as late as Feb 2009, banks were still making dubious home equity loans on the basis of inflated home values.
