KABULAn Afghan woman detonated a suicide vest concealed beneath her burka, killing two U.S. soldiers and injuring scores of Afghan civilians in what government officials say is Afghanistan's first female suicide attack, officials said Tuesday. Going forward, Afghan security forces will have to be more vigilant about checking women for explosives and weapons, said Gen. Khalilullah, Kunar's police chief. In the past, male suicide bombers often have worn burkasflowing robes that envelop the face and bodies of womenknowing that in this extremely conservative country, security forces are less likely to check women for explosives.

Any widespread appearance of female bombers would mean complications for security forces, because contact between men and women in Afghan society is limited, and male officers are forbidden to search women. Afghan security forces are recruiting female officers, but they are still relatively few in number.
