Sounds like the Taliban were using her as a human shield. In any case, except in cases of gross negligence or murder, I feel the blame for her death falls squarely on them given their history of treatment of captives and the fact that they kidnapped her.

#2 In a hostage situation, the default assumption is that the hostages will die, not that they will be saved. That is why a better outcome is just that, better, not expected.

#3 In any hostage situation any deaths on the hostage's part lies squarely on the hostage-takers shoulders. It was *they* who took the hostage and *they* were responsible.

Same as if an ~~terrorist~~ insurgent hides behind a human shield and the human shield is killed in an assult on the ~~terrorist~~ insurgent - its on their head. Not the attacker.
