#1 ....What a fracking mess this is gonna be. The biggest problem (from my perspective) is this: that dashed line you see just south of Progressive Field is the Innerbelt, where I-90, I-71, and I-77 (AKA still the Willow Freeway on some maps) meet. Anything goes down and that's it - there's no other way through the city without going about five miles south to I-480, or around fifteen miles south to the Ohio Turnpike/I-80. And there's no real connection from the city to any of those - it would be streets all the way. It'll take hours to get around at best.

They SHOULD have had this out at the IX Center near Hopkins Airport. A lot harder to get to but a lot more defensible and it wouldn't close an appreciable chunk of the damn city for a week and a half.

A 'IX Center' venue would have made it very difficult for protesters. A crowded urban setting with ready access to businesses which can be looted, flammables, and protester egress are essential.

#3 Lets hope the FBI are tracking all ammonium nitrate purchase over 50 lbs. And all recent moving van sales and leases.

#4 I thought they were already tracking all ammonium nitrate purchases. I wonder if they are blocking points where potential snipers can roost. Secret Service Director Joseph P. Clancy says Cleveland Police are ready for RNC

#6 From another cleveland.com article, Clancy on plans & rehearsing:
He said getting all of the police agencies around a big table to go through possible danger scenarios is vital to being prepared.

"You think about, okay what if an individual comes to a garage and starts firing down on the crowd," Clancy said. "What if that happens? Who's going to respond to that? And then we have all of the important players around the table, and everyone has a piece. And It allows everyone to know what everyone else is doing."

He said the tabletop scenarios include everything from horrifying attacks to such simple things as a protest group standing in front of a motorcade for someone the Secret Service is protecting.

"We don't want that motorcade and the detail agents to see that for the first time. They want to have talked about that before," he said.

#7  such simple things as a protest group standing in front of a motorcade

That's not a free speech issue, that's a safety hazard -- and surely as such illegal. For it to be free speech they can protest from the sidewalk along the road after properly applying for a permit. Cleveland is Democratic Machine terrirtory, so there oughtn't be any difficulty getting a permit to protest a Republican party event.

Cleveland is a waterfront city, so there's some slope built into the street drainage infrastructure. Pretty hard to secure from below.

I vote for hijacked gas trucks dumped into the storm and sewer drains. I'll bet the eastside parking lots and cemetary drain into the same sewer as the Quicken Loan building roof downspouts.

Of course there's the adjacent rail yard...

and the nearby public airport.

All in all 3 threat vectors within a few blocks, 4 if you add river access from Lake Erie which shares an open Naval border with Canada, that are not addressed by blocking surface streets.

#9 Not sure why the Evil Party operatives would want to do more than monkey warfare against the Stupid Party - if they did too much, such as killing delegates or candidates, they might provide the opportunity to 'reset' the nomination and pick someone the Clintons did NOT want to oppose them.
