#1 Just how did they hit a slow-moving cargo ship? Careers are over. RIP, the sailors deserved better

#2 At least they found them. The worst part is when they are lost at sea.

#3 How did this happen?

56 miles off shore and hits another ship, and the US ship was in the wrong.

#6 Wondering about the quality of the OD at the time of impact....failure to take dramatic action suggests paralyzed by indecision or totally unaware. Sadly, lives were lost and others have seen their career end by what wasn't done by the officer entrusted with lives and the ship.

#7 Just how did they hit a slow-moving cargo ship?

From reports, it wasn't a "slow-moving cargo ship".

At 0230, the least of the least mans the helm.

Not really.

Wondering about the quality of the OD at the time of impact....failure to take dramatic action suggests paralyzed by indecision or totally unaware.

We won't know until a board of inquiry takes place. Otherwise this is all conjecture, semi-knowledgable and... otherwise.

#8 Plenty of time for investigation and inquiries. Top priority for now should be the families and loved ones of our brave departed sailors.

#9 Ay-Pee: "The damage to the destroyer suggests that the container ship, the ACX Crystal, might have slammed into it at a significant speed."

I stand corrected

#10 The container ship was seen making a U-turn before the collision on some ship trackers, a move that has raised questions about what happened.

All of the ACX Crystal's 20-member Filipino crew were safe, according to Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K., which operates the ship.

The Japanese coast guard questioned crew members of the ACX Crystal, and is treating the incident as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.

#13 Were the Filipino crew from South Philippine? That might be a clue.

#14 The only way this could have happened is if the Fitzgerald wasn't monitoring primary radar and the container ship was running without running lights and her transponder was off.

IOW, a premeditated and quite deliberate ramming.

#15 American Thinker has a blog post on the deliberate ramming.

#16 I will bet you dollars to donuts that the container ship that hit the uss Fitzgerald was piloted by a NORK operative. The Fitzpatrick was part of the USS Ronald Reagan battle group. The Fitzgerald provides missile defense to the group. Some NORK ships need some limpet seacocks.

#17 There's a lot of possibilities.

Again, we don't know, and we won't know until a board of inquiry is convened.

#18 The container ship needs to be quarantined and nobody gets off, and the ship is guarded 24/7. We also need to have a team at the shipping company hq and find out what we can there. I do not have a nose like my dawg, but I can smell a rat halfway around the world.
