Why is Afghanistan hooked on poppies?

Richard Holbrooke announced in Rome on Saturday that the U.S. will shift anti-poppy efforts in Afghanistan away from destroying crops and toward supporting alternatives.

#2 Why is Afghanistan hooked on poppies?

Because it’s a steady income for the Taliban, who guard the producer for a cut of the profits. They wouldn’t be needed to guard pistachio orchards or saffron fields. Also, Afghanistan has an excess of uneducated peasants to harvest the poppies, many already opium addicts, so that isn’t an issue.

No. Poppy seeds for cooking are mostly grown in the Netherlands and Turkey, Seeking cure.

#5 I forgot to add the "sarc" tag. Poppy seeds are also grown in California and yes it is legal to grow poppies, what's illegal is the harvesting of poppy sap.
