#1 all these temperatures are preliminary and need to be audited before the record goes in the book

once upon a time the hottest temp recorded was in El Azizia, Libya at 58C in 1922 but a few years ago that was audited and disqualified

the audit looks for unexplained temperature spikes, local sources of heat such as jet exhaust and compares the recording station with other nearby stations
