Prior to 1980, most Southern Baptists and evangelicals were Democrats. The perception took hold that the Carter admin was seeking to strip southern ministries (and all religious organizations nationwide) of their tax-exempt status. Alert GOP strategists saw an opportunity to shift evangelicals to the GOP, and the result was the 1980 landslide.

Wonder if a similar phenom is starting to gather momentum now, quietly, unbeknownst to the Twittersphere and the media morons?
