#2 They are using Nicotiana benthamiana plant cells to produce large quantities of single virus proteins by infecting them with transgenic Agrobacterium tumefaciens. It's a little more complicated than 'tobacco cures coronavirus!' over there in Journalist World.

#5 Nice links Skidmark. Research paper is dated 2008 so they've had some practical work time.

Thank you WF9313. It is an Australian native plant which does contain nicotine, but is not the same as the commercially known tobacco plant we are familiar with.

Which is really too bad. Surviving the chinese plague by drinking gin and tonics and smoking a fine cigar would have been a welcome change to a new century coming out of the blocks like drunks running the 300 hurdles.
