Nick and Marilyn have long-term political goals. A federal 'investigation' will assist in cleaning out the closet in advance of their next career moves. A sort of policing up the drop zone or sanitizing effort.

The goal of our current Federal government is to EMPTY the prisons, not put more criminals in them.
