#1 By coincidence, I stumbled over an old Poul Anderson book, Industrial Revolution (1963). The plot: North America is taken over by the Social Justice Party and private enterprise is attacked as not being equitable. The military is suborned to support them, to avoid massive budget cuts required due to all the new social programs. All of this is in a SciFi setting but his prescience w/r/t the underlying trends is disturbing.
