#2 French Huguenot vineyard and cattle farmer Pieter Mauritz Retief thought he understand Zulu. Retief was on the move North, away from the thieving Xhosa and a British government that offered them no protection, to a more peaceful place and better lands.

Retief was informed by Zulu Chief Dingane that he would meet with him and his men... 'only if they were unarmed'. The treaty payments were made, and passage rights had been signed. It was to be a celebration. It did not end well for Retief in 1838. It seems it seldom ends well for anyone.
