#1 Following the fall of President Suharto after more than three decades in power the "anti-subversive" law was lifted by President Habibi. Thus, the ground was set for radicals to organize. Among the the most important to do so was the Jamaah Ikhwan al-Muslimin Indonesia (JAMI). Although radical it was not terrorist. The JAMI itself had its origen in the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. The growth of Indonesia Islamism was led by people of Arab, particularly of Yemeni origin. In addition, many Indonesian students were radicalized at al Azhar University, Cairo. During the "Arab Spring" many returned home and joined other less radical Islamists in raising hell.
Following the 2002 attacks on Bali the media and the military have concentrated on the JAMI -- now the Jemaah Islamiyah. Overall, the government has managed to control its activity, at least for the present.
