#6 Nobody but New York Times reporter Ron Susskind knows who said that, Mr. Joe, assuming anyone said it at all. He included it in a 2004 article about the George W. Bush White House, but only described the speaker as a senior advisor to the president. Karl Rove has been accused of being the one who said it; not only has he denied it, but claims the quote was invented — not a far-fetched claim, given the NYT propensity for nurturing fabulists.

And if nobody actually said it, nobody meant any such thing about American exceptionalism.
